Hades is the wonderful imagined rogue-like dungeon crawler. These are your primary forms of attack. You have a dash/dodge mechanic too. As you progress through the game you gain power-ups (boons), these last for several dungeons, until you die or until you replace them. These power-ups are vital to surviving each dungeon and ultimately escaping. The combination of your initial weapon of choice and the power-ups define your playstyle through that run and each run is different due to the random nature of power-ups. That's the game in a nutshell in a simplistic form.

"hades1"

The developers have kept the gameplay super simple but allowed for an amazing array of character build types from melee, ranged or somewhere in between. Then the power-up mechanism has a huge array of choice and combinations too. As with any rogue-like, you will die a lot. I found the numerous character playstyles that varied so much through each run which gave the game longevity and its novelty factor. There wasn't a point in the game after 30 hours of game time that I felt bored, it just was engrossing and engaging, it was tons of fun. It was so much fun and difficult too.

"hades2"

Hades is primarily a cartoon(y) art style, the Underworld has several stages that are themed too. Each stage has its nuances and level design features that can be used to your advantage. There is a huge cast of characters of Greek Gods from Hermes to Athena to Ares to name a few, each with their personality and voice-over too. The voice-overs and acting are superb which adds a whole another dimension to the gameplay and storytelling elements. The characters help to paint the world around you and your place in it. Humour is used effectively too to enhance the storytelling aspects as well. The lighting, sound effects and level design are amazing. Hades combines an amazingly addictive rogue-like with a fantastic story and setting to boot. The choice of Greek Mythology is present with the costumes, weapon designs and every artefact at every level.

"hades3"

Hades achieves so much that many rogue-likes games want to accomplish and does it in an amazingly and thoroughly enjoyable way. The visuals are superb and every aspect is artistically rendered with a meticulous eye for detail. The use of Greek mythology sets the scene for the game as you battle your way out of the Underworld. The art style is lush, vibrant and dark amidst the background of the Underworld. It delivers an amazing story with fantastic voice acting. The story is intriguing and has the right amount of humour to enhance it even more. Every character looks stunning and the voice acting ties the story and gameplay together. The voice-overs are a masterstroke too, this helps elevate the storytelling. The game achieves a wonderful balance between being not forgiving but giving you enough bonus and power-ups for subsequent plays. You will die a lot but the game balance is fair and the more you play, the more persistent power up and perks you can use for the next run through. This is what a rogue-like should aim to achieve.

The game is set in a futuristic galaxy where the protagonist flies between galaxies to undertake missions. The galaxy seems infinite. The scale of planets and galaxies to visit is huge. I haven't played Elite Dangerous in a long time but I was looking forward to seeing what it had to offer and I will delve through the multiple game types and the action feast that is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey.

To start, I mainly played the FPS mission-based game, where you travel the galaxies where you attempt to gain influence and power up your character. It has that classic action RPG style gameplay mixed with a huge emphasis on the action elements. I loved the FPS elements, it's very action-focused and you have to choose how you negotiate each mission. The FPS is mixed with interstellar travel. Different planets have different temperatures and gravity which mean each level is unique. There is a mix of stealth elements, shooter, all-out mayhem and lots of little clever gameplay mechanics such as specialist tools. I did find the gameplay a bit repetitive without a story to bind your missions together, the game consists of what would be considered side missions. If you like the mechanics of going from planet to planet and upgrading your player then this may be up your street.

"elited_o1"

The control system does require a keyboard and mouse just with the sheer amount of menus and options available, the controller just won't be suitable. The regular FPS controls make it easy for anyone to get acclimated with the game. There is an array of menus and side menus that can be a bit clunky, to begin with, it did require a couple of hours to get used to them. The FPS elements are pretty standard and the spaceship does require a bit of time to be proficient. Extensive controls and menus are needed to track missions, spaceships, planets and goals.

Maps, space and levels are all rendered well, this will vary on the GPU that you have but even on my mid-tier GPU, it was awesome to look at it. The frame rate at 1080p was consistent for me and I didn't encounter any graphical issues. The game isn't fully an open world. Each area you visit is enclosed and limits where you can roam. The mix of martian, moon and space environments provide a backdrop for the levels. Each level/area has its unique buildings such as factories, outposts, laboratories, refineries etc. It does give a sense of a series of planets that are inhabited, a living world where you drop into different places to complete missions. The whole space theme, ships, environments and outposts are done well. The gameplay reminds me of Mass Effect without the central story to pin it all together, it's the game I think that comes closest to what Elite Dangerous: Odyssey plays like except a first-person view. Just like Mass Effect, the game is mission-based as opposed to wandering amongst the planets.

"elited_o2"

There is also a space combat mode that allows you to pit yourself against other online players. It allows for deathmatch and team deathmatch modes. I found this tons of fun and I thought it was cool but I found matchmaking poor and a lack of full games an issue. Though there could be huge scope for an improvement in terms of matchmaking which detract from the game.

"elited_o3"

Overall, the game is interesting, I love the mix of FPS action-based space action mixed with spaceship combat. I like the use of tools and levelling up your character as you see fit. There is a huge world to explore and tons of missions to boot. The single-player game has elements of massively multiplayer online games too where other commanders are visible in lobbies and stations. The spaceship and deathmatch combat is awesome but I found matchmaking poor and very rarely played with more than 3 people.

"elited_o4"

The game does suffer from a host of bugs and issues which made the first person game extremely frustrating. The point score of 5/10 is pretty much down to bugs and issues. I encountered multiple mission-ending bugs where I had to do a game reset. I found the most frustrating thing is that I was getting into a rhythm and then some sort of bizarre issue stopping your gameplay. These bugs need to be addressed to get the whole experience. With bugs and issues fixed, I could see the game as being very enjoyable but I was left frustrated most of the time. I was hoping the game wouldn't crash or just end abruptly. I found the lack of story in the FPS made the game lacklustre and the missions became quite repetitive quickly and with bugs hugely frustrating.

Overall: 5/10

Project Genesis is a PVP sci-fi shooter that is both an FPS and spaceship combat game too. The game is set in a futuristic world where you take the role of operatives who are trying to either take control of bases or protect them from intruders. It's not a new game in that sense, it follows classic FPS genres. The game heavily leans on being a team-based game too. It must be noted that the game is in early access and there are updates, fixes and improvements occurring periodically. This should be considered as a preview.

The game does have a lot going for it, I'm a huge fan of FPS and spaceship combat. This game tries to meld and join the two formats. It's interesting from a gameplay point of view that you can shift from either game type seamlessly in the game. It does combine the game types well.

"projectgenesis1"

The FPS does remind me of games I have played for years which is no bad thing, there is a huge amount of action and joyful mayhem. It was easy to pick up and play. It has all the classic elements of an FPS:- quick, frantic and lots of mayhem going on. You can customise and play load-outs that suit your style i.e. tank, stealth and so on. It took a little more time to get adjusted to the spaceship combat gameplay. I always find flying elements have a steeper learning curve and it's not that bad in all honesty. Like the FPS elements, the visuals are superb and the action matches it too. The graphics are slick and the game does well in both game types. I didn't suffer any graphical bugs or bugs when playing the game.

"projectgenesis2"

There is a huge amount of customisation and personalisation in the game types, the customise does affect your play style, you can choose smaller quicker spaceships or heavier tank builds same applies to the FPS elements too. The game also provides some solid tutorials and walkthroughs of all aspects of the game which helped me a lot and got me up to gaming speed quicker.

I played primarily on US servers, while the ping times weren't the best, it didn't affect my gameplay. The net code was solid and the franticness of the game shone through. I had very little noticeable latency.

"projectgenesis3"

The game is solid, the game mechanics and visuals are all good. I like the inclusion of two different games in the one, both are done well and enjoyable to play. I found it hard to find players at certain times of the day or certain days but once I managed to find a game it was enjoyable. I loved the action-packed nature of FPS and its high intensity, the spaceship is less intense but action-packed. It does what it attempts to do very well. I really enjoyed my time playing the game and want to play more.

It's a prequel to Camp Sunshine which was a cult hit. The game is a mix of dungeon crawler and story-driven RPG. This review is for the PC Steam version which, is available to purchase now; the console versions will be released in 2022.

"sunshinemanor1"

Sunshine Manor is a real throwback to the classic 8-bit dungeon RPG. At first, the bright and wonderfully detailed game looks fantastic and does the 8-bit genre justice. The game does have a spooky and eerie underlying theme that is ubiquitous. It's a heavily story-driven narrative that gives context to the Sunshine Manor and why you are there. You have that classic gameplay as you shift through numerous levels of the mansion. The top-down view with fantastically rendered levels gives me a sense of nostalgia but is used by many indie games still. The dungeons are detailed, and each dungeon has its theme. You play as Ada, and you have to go through a series of dungeons with clues to find out what happened in this mansion. Every dungeon, every character and every clue helps to uncover the mystery of the manor.

"sunshinemanor2"

The game has a timeless retro quality that is easy to pick up and play but has enough to keep you entertained for the duration of the game. The storyline is intriguing and adds wonderfully scary and horror themes during the game. Level design is superb and the transition between ordinary and horror levels changes the tone of the game. I loved the unexpected jump scares throughout. The dialogue is superb, and the mix of game mechanics from general dungeon crawling to boss battles adds many variations in gameplay. Dream Cycle is a mix of a platformer, shooter and stealth game with some magic thrown in for good measure. For the player, this means you can adapt and play the game as suits you. You can go gung-ho or take a stealthy approach. I ended up playing a mix of both to get a feel of your weapons and game mechanics. I found the controls straightforward and intuitive. The game has tons of adventures and levels to navigate. I loved the mix of climbing and traversing terrain while using spells such as astral projection to navigate parts of the level to find the best way to scale huge castles. The environments and graphics are magical and intriguing. I did find the similar enemies a bit repetitive at times. I would have liked a bit more of a story-driven narrative to levels instead of just choosing them from the map. In totality, I enjoyed the game mechanics, the levels and the world. Your goal is to navigate your laser beam across a board using various pieces to destroy the king and win.

"Deflection_5"

A simple tutorial allows you to pick up the basics you need to play. It does a great job to bring you into the game. I then proceeded to play the single-player game against the computer AI. I found the game tricky at first, but eventually, I got to a point where I was not losing every game. The computer AI is still challenging with the option of Easy or Hard settings. When you get bored of just the computer AI, the game features both; local and online multiplayer modes. I'd recommend a few single-player games against the computer AI before playing online though, this will help you hone your game before tackling the world. There is also a super simple level editor where you can create your custom maps to play; I'm too lazy to spend lots of time doing this though!

"Deflection_6"

Tron like vibes is visible throughout, the use of neon blue and orange colours for the pieces. The music has that synthy 70 futuristic feel to it. The view of the game is a 3D board that you can rotate as you please; it's all simple but slick; I can't complain about the game mechanics, layout, or design. It's all executed well. The longevity of the game is maintained; by online and local play.

I found it enjoyable, but you can't go wrong with a laser board that has a chess inspiration. The synthy Tron vibes give the game a very cool factor. Mechanics are simple and slick but like most games, it is hard to master. If you are looking for a new strategy/puzzle game, I highly recommend this and it's even better with a friend!

Overall: 7/10
Developer: Dark Lord

Platform: Steam Early Access from August 11th

Genre: Action, Early Access

Publisher: Daedalic Entertainment

Glitchpunk is the latest cyberpunk game that I have managed to get some hands-on gameplay time over the last week. The game is a top-down action game in the mould of the classic GTA games. You fight, kill, rob cars and go on missions in this dark and gloomy world filled with gangs and enemies.

"glitchpunk1"

If you have played the original GTA games, that will give a good sense of what you will get. The game's mechanics are 2D top-down action-based mayhem where you guide your player around the dark and dystopian city. You can collect new guns, powerups and missions as you navigate the city. You can hijack cars and do as you please! A decent storyline and good dialogue help to bring some colour to the world.

Glitchpunk allows the player to build relationships with other gangs/factions that can be friendly or adversarial. It means you can be in a hostile world where you are enemy number one, not just with law enforcement.

"glitchpunk2"

I have to say I enjoyed the twin-stick shooter elements and walking around the world completing missions. However, it should be noted that it is an early access game, and it has some issues. The driving mechanics in the vehicles are clunky and annoying; to say the least, it needs a bit of tweaking. I encountered various issues with the frame rate with a whole host of different graphical settings that also made the game frustrating. Whilst doing missions, you can get a cop rating of between 1 - 5 that indicates your wanted level, I found that police just randomly being everywhere and that the two stars wanted level; that it didn't make a whole lot of sense. The save game feature isn't spelt out. If the developers were to do this, it would have made my first few attempts at the game less annoying. It turned into a rogue-like until I figured out where the safe house was.

"glitchpunk3"

The combination of these issues does impact the game. Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag is an indie action platformer from HitGrab Inc. The game is in the finalists of the Nordic Discovery contest. As the title of the name game suggests, it's based on Celtic mythology and uses it for the setting of the game.

The game is presented using a classical art-style animation, it does remind of some Disney animation. It is reminiscent of many side-scrolling platforms in terms of visuals. It's a genre that has found a footing in indie games after being a mainstay on 8 and 16-bit consoles.

"clanoconall1"

Clan O'Conall makes great use of Celtic mythology which helps set the scene for the entire game. If you have played any old-school platformers or indie platformers, the mechanics and gameplay are familiar. Levels consist of worlds where you have to navigate platform sections, puzzles whilst switching through the three playable characters. Each character has skills and attributes to navigate different aspects of levels. The player has to use their skills to solve and progress through levels towards the bosses. There is a satisfying feeling to progressing through each level and a sense of accomplishment. The game is enjoyable as it mixes action and puzzles seamlessly throughout. It has the joyous feel of playing a well-crafted platform action game.

Controls are super simple and responsive, you feel in total control and the learning curve is low. The game is forgiving in terms of navigating the platforming sections.

"clanoconall2"

The graphics whilst simple are polished and bring the game to life, it's simply clean and suits the game to a tee. Each environment has its look and feels with different creatures to battle as well.

Each of the three characters has a levelling up system where you can build the character into whichever playstyle suits you. The character levelling is straightforward and isn't in-depth as an RPG.

"clanoconall3"

Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag delivers a fantastic vibrant action platformer that looks great. The gameplay is solid and is easy to pick up and get stuck into. Celtic mythology helps to give a backdrop to each level and ties the story. During the game, players will have to swap between three characters to navigate enjoyable levels. Each level has a great mix of platforming, action and puzzle gameplay. It's a fantastic fun platformer that I loved playing.

Hades is the wonderful imagined rogue-like dungeon crawler. The game manages to delicately balance the rouge-like game with a story underneath, it's tough and difficult but each play-through allows you to power up to progress a little further each time. Every subsequent run is a little easier. This is set in the wonderfully reimagined Underworld with a host of characters from Greek mythology and you play as Zagreus and his journey to escape.

The game centres on Zagreus (son of Hades) and his journey out of the Underworld. You start with a weapon that has a normal and a special attack, you can unlock more weapons as you progress through the game. You can cast a gem too that can inflict damage.

"hades4"

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.

I love how dark and full of horror the game is. The game executes every element with fantastic detail. The game centres around Morgan Carter and the journey through Dreamlands to get her essence back. Morgan's essence was stolen; by her great-great-grand-uncle, Randolph Carter, who is trying to enslave the Dreamlands for his purposes.

"dreamcycle1"

Dream Cycle can be played in several perspectives first-person, third-person or hybrid of both (dynamic camera angle chooses what it sees as fit). The option to switch modes is in the menu. Once you decide what view to take, you are on your merry way to explore this labyrinth of levels. I liked the mixture of magic and guns. It was jarring at first but grew on me fairly quickly! As you progress through the levels, you gain more magic spells to help you battle the creatures at each dark corner.

"dreamcycle3"

The mix of platform elements, fighting, and shooting constitute the core of the game. There are climbing elements, astral projection, and teleportation to help you navigate through the adventures. The adventures (levels) are short and impactful. You take the approach that best suits the game style you want to use. I loved the exploration and discovery of levels. Levels do have lots of weapons and power-ups to find. I enjoyed the choice of a bow, handgun or machine gun as your choice of ranged weapons, unexpected but fun.

"dreamcycle2"

It is an early access game with the latest patch of 1.1.6 at the time of this preview. I didn't encounter any bugs or issues on my playthroughs. The world and the cel-shaded art style mixed with magic elements provides a wonderful; canvas for Morgan to explore. I am looking forward to seeing future updates in this game and what the game will ultimately become.
Developer: Coreffect Interactive

Platform: Steam

Genre: Strategy, Indie

Publisher: Coreffect Interactive

Deflection is the next in the line of puzzle games that I have had the pleasure to play over the last few weeks.

The longevity of the game is maintained; by online and local play.

I found it enjoyable, but you can't go wrong with a laser board that has a chess inspiration. The synthy Tron vibes give the game a very cool factor. Mechanics are simple and slick but like most games, it is hard to master.

"hades4"

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.

We got our hands on a preview build of Splashteam's second game Tinykin. Tinykin is a wonderful cartoon animated 3D adventure. It does pay homage to Pikmin for sure and does give me Toy Story vibes through the look and feel. The perspective is from a small character (the size of a small toy) in a human world. You start in the living room, which seems massive, and you encounter a whole cast of creatures on your journey. What hit me straight away was the stunning cartoony graphics that were bright but in a beautiful 3D world. I was more than pleasantly surprised; it was polished from start to finish.

"tinykin1"

The preview does give you an entire level to discover the game mechanics and a feel for the game. You play as Milo, the explorer, who is in this amazing living room full of life and creatures. The game does have that mix of platform and puzzle all rolled into one. It's a joyful, bright, and wonderful experience. The game has tons of characters, and the cartoon art style gives a fantastic look and feel.

Milo has a supporting cast of Tinykins little creatures with special powers; in the preview, you encounter two types of Tinykins who can move items and blow things up.

"tinykin4"

A mix of platform, strategy and using Tinykins constitute the gameplay. It's a very fun platform game with a lot of puzzles to solve in a beautifully rendered world. I played the game using an Xbox controller, and the controls are super intuitive. The game does give directed guidelines as you uncover a new mechanic. The game is super slick and a real joy to play.

"tinykin5"

I was impressed from the start with the wonderful look and feel. The game looks and feels polished. The game mechanics were intuitive, and the art style lends itself to a beautiful looking game. This one level was a great taster, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the full game holds and how much richer it will be.

It's dark and lots of fun; I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was.

"sunshinemanor3"

The game is a fantastic 8-bit horror RPG that has all the great elements of a 2D game. I love how dark and full of horror the game is. The game executes every element with fantastic detail. I also love the general retro feel of the game.

Overall: 8/10
Developer: Cathuria Games

Platform: PC, Early Access

Genre: Action, Adventure

Publisher: Raw Fury

Dream Cycle is a 3D adventure game from the creator of Tomb Raider, Toby Gard.

I am looking forward to seeing future updates in this game and what the game will ultimately become.
Developer: Coreffect Interactive

Platform: Steam

Genre: Strategy, Indie

Publisher: Coreffect Interactive

Deflection is the next in the line of puzzle games that I have had the pleasure to play over the last few weeks. It has the bright colours from Tron, and you play a laser-based strategy akin to Chess on a 3D board.

It is a clever concept that has been well thought out but needs some bug fixes to reach its potential; I'm looking forward to the next update where Glitchpunk isn't as glitchy.

It's dark and lots of fun; I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was.

"sunshinemanor3"

The game is a fantastic 8-bit horror RPG that has all the great elements of a 2D game. I love how dark and full of horror the game is. The game executes every element with fantastic detail. I also love the general retro feel of the game.

Overall: 8/10
Developer: Cathuria Games

Platform: PC, Early Access

Genre: Action, Adventure

Publisher: Raw Fury

Dream Cycle is a 3D adventure game from the creator of Tomb Raider, Toby Gard.

I am looking forward to seeing future updates in this game and what the game will ultimately become.
Developer: Coreffect Interactive

Platform: Steam

Genre: Strategy, Indie

Publisher: Coreffect Interactive

Deflection is the next in the line of puzzle games that I have had the pleasure to play over the last few weeks.

It's dark and lots of fun; I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was.

"sunshinemanor3"

The game is a fantastic 8-bit horror RPG that has all the great elements of a 2D game. I love how dark and full of horror the game is. The game executes every element with fantastic detail. The option to switch modes is in the menu. Once you decide what view to take, you are on your merry way to explore this labyrinth of levels.

The longevity of the game is maintained; by online and local play.

I found it enjoyable, but you can't go wrong with a laser board that has a chess inspiration. The synthy Tron vibes give the game a very cool factor. Mechanics are simple and slick but like most games, it is hard to master.

I love how dark and full of horror the game is. The game executes every element with fantastic detail. The option to switch modes is in the menu. Once you decide what view to take, you are on your merry way to explore this labyrinth of levels.

It's dark and lots of fun; I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was.

"sunshinemanor3"

The game is a fantastic 8-bit horror RPG that has all the great elements of a 2D game. I love how dark and full of horror the game is. The game executes every element with fantastic detail. I also love the general retro feel of the game.

Overall: 8/10
Developer: Cathuria Games

Platform: PC, Early Access

Genre: Action, Adventure

Publisher: Raw Fury

Dream Cycle is a 3D adventure game from the creator of Tomb Raider, Toby Gard.

I am looking forward to seeing future updates in this game and what the game will ultimately become.
Developer: Coreffect Interactive

Platform: Steam

Genre: Strategy, Indie

Publisher: Coreffect Interactive

Deflection is the next in the line of puzzle games that I have had the pleasure to play over the last few weeks.

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.
