Horizon Zero Dawn was released in 2017 and is probably one of my favourite PS4 titles; it is a stunning game. If you are new to Horizon, I'd recommend playing the original game if you haven't. Forbidden West story follows on from where Zero Dawn left off. One nice touch I liked was the quick overview of Zero Dawn before you begin Forbidden West. Think of a Netflix recap to help refresh all our memories. You play as Aloy (The Nora Warrior), the protagonist in this huge open-world behemoth of an RPG action game.

The cinematics are fantastic; Horizon has always managed to negotiate the fine line of being a fantastic game that feels like a movie that has the right balance of story to the game. A lush open world that extends endlessly makes the game seem never-ending. The array of characters, side missions, errands, jobs, and various other missions also give the sense of a living and breathing world. Aloy is just planted in this world to figure out all the nuances and what is going on. Every part of the world has something to do. These can vary from ancient ruins, new machines, hidden cities, hidden loot to rare weapons or armour. The scale of the game is massive.

"horizon_fw1"

The voice-overs and acting are superb. Every piece of dialogue and cutscene is engrossing, which adds to the story. It depends where you spend your skill tree points and what you prefer doing. My character build was a mix of stealth and tank build. The game has improved the levelling up mechanics, and a real focus can be seen in the combat mechanics. Everything gameplay-wise is richer and just more responsive. It enhances Zero Dawn but gives new life to the game too. There are new machines and each machine; looks superb.

"horizon_fw2"

PS5 graphics do support higher textures and detail throughout the game, in levels where it's dark or underwater; the lighting is immense. The dual sense is used to give richer sounds and enhance the in-game action. The haptic feedback for certain game mechanics also enriches the gameplay; these may be small things but again make the game even more immersive. The boss fights are next level.

I did have the odd graphical issue (disappeared after the patch) and some issues with collision detections in the map. A few times, I got stuck under the map, but this was a rare event, and with regular auto-saves, you were back the last save before you knew it. It's hard to find fault; I have to nit-pick and pick tiny issues to draw criticisms. To be honest, the graphical modes are the biggest noticeable updates to the games for me, but the games are fantastic to play too.

PS5 SSD loading times are superb and make the gaming experience even more immersive; quicker load times and less wait time is more noticeable on PS5. It's all about big attitudes, big guns and big, enemies. The game takes a light-hearted look at the usually super serious genre of first-person shooters.

While the game follows the classic first-person shooter genre, there is a third-person view which I ended up using most of the time due to the game mechanics. You assume the role of "Serious" Sam Stone who is, in Rome to find the holy grail. This plot point serves as the main storyline in the game. Along your journey, you encounter a rag-tag bunch of characters that will help you on your way and help to develop the story. Humour and fun are also central to Serious Sam and makes it stand out from other first-person shooters. The cast of characters helps drive plotline, slapstick comedy, jokes, and just general absurdity in the game. It does a good job incorporating this in the game and, it is constant.

"serioussam4_1"

However, the gameplay and mechanics are odd; the game has a clunky, heavy feel. Movement feels laboured, and aiming is also not smooth. It just doesn't feel that smooth; the feel a first-person should have. Enemies spawn randomly out of portals. I found it hard to figure out if they, are in front of me or behind. This is problematic in the first-person mode, so I switched to the third person; this does alleviate some of the issues of random enemies spawning and not knowing where they are.

"serioussam4_2"

In the first level, I managed to activate the Christmas theme for the entire; level which consisted of Christmas themed songs as the background music. It was awful, and to compound things further, terrible sound effects of drones persisted through the level. The first level was frustrating and annoying. As I progressed through more levels, I did enjoy the new characters and enemies you encounter. The look and feel of the game did seem somewhat dated, though. In general, the game seems dated, though.

"serioussam4_3"

Serious Sam 4 is a not so serious first-person shooter that has lots of actions and some gorgeous monsters to kill. However, the gameplay is clunky and lacks smoothness. The sound effects and background music in certain levels were annoying. It's just a very mixed bag. I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. It's mediocre and dated in general. The game lacks the level of polish and refinement I was expecting.

Overall: 5/10
Developer: Dejima

Platform: PC

Genre: Action

Publisher: Thunderful Publishing

Firegirl is a 2D platformer action roguelike game where you assume the role of a young firefighter. The firefighter has a pickaxe and a water hose to douse the immense fires. While putting out the fire, you will save the stranded people and cats too! As the game is a roguelike, the levels are procedurally generated using various environments as the backdrop to your heroic actions.

"firegirl1"

The game is 2D, but the mixture of the pixelated art style and the side-scrolling adventure gives a 3D feel to the game. Characters are bright and vibrant; the characters bob up and down too all the time. Your spawn point is the fire station. The fire station is where you purchase power-ups that are persisted throughout runs and allow you to tackle the bigger blazes. The roguelike elements come from the fact that you gain money and fans after each fire which help you upgrade your firefighter and their tools. At first, your water hose is weak, and you have little health, but after a few hours, this will increase. You gain cash for finishing missions and saving people; you will gain fans in the process who will also donate to aid you too. Cash can be used for power-ups; fans help you get donations.

"firegirl2"

I love the roguelike genre in general, and I love the novel approach that Firegirl takes. You hack through doors, jump over obstacles, and use your hose to put out fires and float around huge levels. I liked that you must be aware of enemies in platforms; that may be above or below you. It's a fast action-paced game that feels like an arcade game too. The sound, environment, voice-over, and story are all great. The game is polished.

"firegirl3"

I loved the pixelated art style of the game and was unsure how the roguelike elements of the game would work. However, after a few runs, it was clear that their roguelike elements made sense and made it more playable. It also increases the longevity of the game. The game does have a backstory, but I'm more about getting stuck in the game. It's an addictive hack and splash adventure. It melds a mix of platformer elements with lots of actions that reminds me of arcade games.

We got our hands on a preview build of Splashteam's second game Tinykin. Tinykin is a wonderful cartoon animated 3D adventure. It does pay homage to Pikmin for sure and does give me Toy Story vibes through the look and feel. The perspective is from a small character (the size of a small toy) in a human world. You start in the living room, which seems massive, and you encounter a whole cast of creatures on your journey. What hit me straight away was the stunning cartoony graphics that were bright but in a beautiful 3D world. I was more than pleasantly surprised; it was polished from start to finish.

"tinykin1"

The preview does give you an entire level to discover the game mechanics and a feel for the game. You play as Milo, the explorer, who is in this amazing living room full of life and creatures. The game does have that mix of platform and puzzle all rolled into one. It's a joyful, bright, and wonderful experience. The game has tons of characters, and the cartoon art style gives a fantastic look and feel.

Milo has a supporting cast of Tinykins little creatures with special powers; in the preview, you encounter two types of Tinykins who can move items and blow things up.

"tinykin4"

A mix of platform, strategy and using Tinykins constitute the gameplay. It's a very fun platform game with a lot of puzzles to solve in a beautifully rendered world. I played the game using an Xbox controller, and the controls are super intuitive. The game does give directed guidelines as you uncover a new mechanic. The game is super slick and a real joy to play.

"tinykin5"

I was impressed from the start with the wonderful look and feel. The game looks and feels polished. The game mechanics were intuitive, and the art style lends itself to a beautiful looking game. This one level was a great taster, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the full game holds and how much richer it will be.

The fire station is where you purchase power-ups that are persisted throughout runs and allow you to tackle the bigger blazes.

Despite having a huge map, the world is segmented into regions that are further subdivided; to make the game seem more manageable and not overwhelming. The scale of the game is massive.

"horizon_fw1"

The voice-overs and acting are superb. Every piece of dialogue and cutscene is engrossing, which adds to the story. Forbidden West continues the fantastic storytelling from Zero Dawn and improves on it. It's all more polished; the sound, the voice, the lights, and the cinematics are superb. There are some breathtaking and jaw-dropping moments in the game.

Game mechanics are an action intensive puzzle-based RPG with a rich levelling up system; that allows you to customise your play to what suits you. Character levelling up is achieved; through side missions and the main quest, you can play stealth, an all-out action build or somewhere in between.

The environments are stunning, detailed, and wonderful to explore. The game does support 4K 30 fps and at 60 fps at a lower resolution on the PS5. The dual sense is used to give richer sounds and enhance the in-game action. The haptic feedback for certain game mechanics also enriches the gameplay; these may be small things but again make the game even more immersive. For example, you will get a new tool, the pullcaster, early on, which adds another tool to Aloy's arsenal. The pullcaster tool uses haptic feedback to give a real sensation that you are pulling and prying doors open. Haptic feedback is integrated throughout the game, from the parkour elements to battles the dinosaurs. When you are climbing the haptics, kick in too to make the game more immersive.

One thing to note is that SSD performance has been optimised for Forbidden West the load times are significantly reduced compared to Zero Dawn, and the game doesn't get any slowdown from loading. Once you are in the game, the level and scene transition flow superbly.

"horizon_fw3"

The big huge bosses are still present in this game which make for amazing action-filled gameplay. The scanning of the bosses using the focus is even more detailed than Zero Dawn. Bosses' defects are presented much clearer to Aloy. This extra level of detail makes the boss fights more compelling and in-depth. You will have to use your wits, guns and tools to beat these amazing huge bosses.

I have put more than 60 hours into the game, and I'm loving; it.

"horizon_fw4"

The game gives a rich, deep, immersive adventure to the player. Horizon Forbidden West is a work of art; it impresses on so many fronts, graphical, story-telling and cinematics spring to mind at first. There are lots of improvements and tweaks compared to the first game. The improved levelling up, improved graphics sounds and richer combat just, to name a few.

The game combines elements of film and games into this hugely immersive experience that is a pure joy to play. Aloy and the cast of characters just bring this dystopian future to life. It's gameplay that is gripping and hard to put down, my favourite game on PS5 by a mile. Forbidden West is more than a worthy sequel to Zero Dawn; it's amazing.

Overall: 9.5/10
Developer: Naughty Dog, Iron Galaxy Studios

Platform: PS5

Genre: Adventure

Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is the updated version of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

I was impressed from the start with the wonderful look and feel. The game looks and feels polished. The game mechanics were intuitive, and the art style lends itself to a beautiful looking game. This one level was a great taster, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the full game holds and how much richer it will be.

These updated versions of the games are; remastered for PS5. The focus of these remasters are on performance and graphic resolution. Both games support a fidelity mode that supports 4K at 30 fps, a performance mode that targets 60fps and a performance plus mode that offers 120 fps but at 1080p. To be honest, the graphical modes are the biggest noticeable updates to the games for me, but the games are fantastic to play too.

PS5 SSD loading times are superb and make the gaming experience even more immersive; quicker load times and less wait time is more noticeable on PS5. This feature gives the game a fantastic performance boost and is more playable. The haptic feedback is used to warn of danger, any sudden impacts and during puzzles too. As a warning system, it allows the player to adjust to changes in the environment in real-time. Puzzles in the game are enhanced, and an extra level of satisfaction is gained; through the haptic feedback.

"unchartedtlc1"

The Uncharted series of games is all about an amazing, thrilling journey. Naughty Dog/Iron Galaxy Studios has updated the game to make the most of the PS5: 3D audio, haptic feedback and updated fantastic visuals.

"unchartedtlc2"

Uncharted is a brilliant third-person action game; the gameplay and gameplay mechanics are superb; every gameplay mechanic fits into the game perfectly. Each mechanic plays a role in giving a vivid experience to the gamer. The game is a mix of parkour and exploration while traversing amazing jungles and ruins. The action elements of the game are mixed up by the numerous; puzzles and platforming elements. A beautiful and intriguing story provides context to the characters and what's going on; the story has twists and turns that intertwine with gameplay too. Naughty Dog did a superb job of combining a fantastic narrative and game.

"unchartedltc3"

Uncharted is more of a directed adventure as opposed to an open-world adventure. The world is designed in a way where the world does almost feel like an open-world adventure through the sheer scale of the levels. The game does give off this huge world feel through the environments and levels; the varying environments and the weather help to give a different feel to each level. All of this helps to game to feel fresh throughout. Graphically everything looks superb, from the characters to the terrain to the weather effects to the jungles and ruins. Uncharted is just an amazing game.

"unchartedltc4"

There is little to be said about the Uncharted franchise that hasn't been said before, but if I was pushed to say something, it would be: Uncharted is a fantastic game that takes the player on a wonderful journey through amazing landscapes with a stellar story that underpins the game. The graphics, gameplay, environments, cinematics, sound, and direction are stunning. You are assuming the role(s) of the explorer throughout an amazing journey that has its highs and lows mixed in with some breathtaking moments. The addition of the graphical modes allows you to play 4k natively or up to 120 fps to suit anyone's taste. It's a must-play game, just excellent game making from start to finish.

The graphics, gameplay, environments, cinematics, sound, and direction are stunning.

It's tonnes of fun, plays fantastic and looks; awesome.

Overall: 8/10
;

Forbidden West is more than a worthy sequel to Zero Dawn; it's amazing.

Overall: 9.5/10
Developer: Naughty Dog, Iron Galaxy Studios

Platform: PS5

Genre: Adventure

Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is the updated version of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

The game RRP is $49.99/€49.99.

Overall: 9/10
Developer: Croteam

Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X (Reviewed) |S

Genre: Action, Adventure, FPS

Publisher: Devolver Digital

Serious Sam 4 is the latest in the series of the classic first-person shooter.

It's tonnes of fun, plays fantastic and looks; awesome.

Overall: 8/10
;
