Curse of the Dead Gods is a skill-based roguelike that is set in a temple dungeon. You navigate through a maze of levels, a host of nasty creatures and ultimately a boss in each temple. The game is played from an isometric perspective and the emphasis is on mastering the simple controls but in an extremely challenging environment.

"curseofthedeadgods1"

Initially, you are set up with a primary melee weapon (sword) and a ranged weapon (pistol), as you battle through each dungeon you will gain relics, power-ups and the ability to offer sacrifices to the gods. The game mechanics centre around a mix of using melee, ranged attacks, parrying and dodging. The critical element in terms of the gameplay is the difficulty level, precision is required throughout and using all the core game mechanics is the only way to survive to progress through the game. If the brutal nature of the difficulty setting isn't challenging enough, your character can become cursed which makes for an even tougher challenge. Each creature you encounter has its own unique set of attacks and defensive skills that you need to overcome. The difficulty setting may put players off but the rich variety of gameplay, playstyles and environments are superb. It should be noted that you will play for many hours to get the most of this game, this isn't a straight pick up and play, you will die a lot before you make any meaningful progress. The learning curve is fairly steep.

"curseofthedeadgods2"

The whole game is illustrated using a dark cartoon style. The environments and characters have an amazing level of detail, the temple dungeon theme ties in the levels, characters, demons and all the gameplay as well. The levels themself are darkly lit which are illuminated by a torch you carry or fires that can be set. Levels contain traps, treasure and a host of evil creatures lurking around each corner. The temples are immersive and the mechanics and joy of killing the creatures make you come back for more. The deeper you progress through each dungeon, the wider variety of levels that you will uncover and different challenges.

"curseofthedeadgods3"

Curse of the Dead Gods is a superb roguelike that marries difficult challenging experiences into this temple themed world. The game mechanics are simple and intuitive but requires skill and patience to master. The ability to level up with either gold or a blood sacrifice is a neat touch that is complemented by the addition of curses as you progress through each stage. The level design and gameplay feel are superb, the game is tough and rewarding. Multiple types of melee and ranged weapons allow you to build a play style that suits you. The world is a dark temple with tons of creatures looking to get you, it's a truly immersive experience.

Hades is the wonderful imagined rogue-like dungeon crawler. The game manages to delicately balance the rouge-like game with a story underneath, it's tough and difficult but each play-through allows you to power up to progress a little further each time. Every subsequent run is a little easier. This is set in the wonderfully reimagined Underworld with a host of characters from Greek mythology and you play as Zagreus and his journey to escape.

The game centres on Zagreus (son of Hades) and his journey out of the Underworld. You start with a weapon that has a normal and a special attack, you can unlock more weapons as you progress through the game. You can cast a gem too that can inflict damage. These are your primary forms of attack. You have a dash/dodge mechanic too. As you progress through the game you gain power-ups (boons), these last for several dungeons, until you die or until you replace them. These power-ups are vital to surviving each dungeon and ultimately escaping. The combination of your initial weapon of choice and the power-ups define your playstyle through that run and each run is different due to the random nature of power-ups. That's the game in a nutshell in a simplistic form.

"hades1"

The developers have kept the gameplay super simple but allowed for an amazing array of character build types from melee, ranged or somewhere in between. Then the power-up mechanism has a huge array of choice and combinations too. As with any rogue-like, you will die a lot. I found the numerous character playstyles that varied so much through each run which gave the game longevity and its novelty factor. There wasn't a point in the game after 30 hours of game time that I felt bored, it just was engrossing and engaging, it was tons of fun. It was so much fun and difficult too.

"hades2"

Hades is primarily a cartoon(y) art style, the Underworld has several stages that are themed too. Each stage has its nuances and level design features that can be used to your advantage. There is a huge cast of characters of Greek Gods from Hermes to Athena to Ares to name a few, each with their personality and voice-over too. The voice-overs and acting are superb which adds a whole another dimension to the gameplay and storytelling elements. The characters help to paint the world around you and your place in it. Humour is used effectively too to enhance the storytelling aspects as well. The lighting, sound effects and level design are amazing. Hades combines an amazingly addictive rogue-like with a fantastic story and setting to boot. The choice of Greek Mythology is present with the costumes, weapon designs and every artefact at every level.

"hades3"

Hades achieves so much that many rogue-likes games want to accomplish and does it in an amazingly and thoroughly enjoyable way. The visuals are superb and every aspect is artistically rendered with a meticulous eye for detail. The use of Greek mythology sets the scene for the game as you battle your way out of the Underworld. The art style is lush, vibrant and dark amidst the background of the Underworld. It delivers an amazing story with fantastic voice acting. The story is intriguing and has the right amount of humour to enhance it even more. Every character looks stunning and the voice acting ties the story and gameplay together. The voice-overs are a masterstroke too, this helps elevate the storytelling. The game achieves a wonderful balance between being not forgiving but giving you enough bonus and power-ups for subsequent plays. You will die a lot but the game balance is fair and the more you play, the more persistent power up and perks you can use for the next run through. This is what a rogue-like should aim to achieve.

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is the wonderfully updated version of the same game that was released for the Sega Megadrive in 1994. It's updated for modern generation consoles while keeping the gameplay and general charm of the game intact. It is a throwback to old school RPG action games from the early 90s.

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is an action-adventure RPG that remains faithful to the original title but has spruced up graphics and brings it into the modern console generation. While the graphics don't match the levels of AAA titles, it does a great job of making them fit for this generation of gamer. At its heart, it is a platformer with RPG elements thrown in, you navigate numerous dungeons, solve puzzles and extract information from multiple characters in each environment. It follows the classic platformer game mechanics of collecting coins, kills enemies, dodges pitfalls, traps and progresses to more complex levels.

"Wonder

The level design of action elements, platformer sections and puzzles are densely packed into each area which consists of a lot of dungeons. The platform and puzzle mechanics are the standouts for me, they have managed to replicate the original but improve them as well. The controls are responsive and you always feel in total control.

Each dungeon and environment has been rendered using a mix of 2D and 3D animation which gives the levels and dungeons a bigger sense of scale. Asha and Pepelogoo, her companion, are vivid with the use of bright colours to bring their personalities to life. The use of vivid colours brings each area and dungeon to life too. Levels have multiple planes and you navigate them to find power-ups or items required to further your quest. The characters are rendered in a wonderful cartoon style that is thematically present throughout the game. The diverse areas and the cartoony graphics give this game a real modern look and feel which sets the stage for compelling gameplay.

"Wonder

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is a wonderful recreation of the classic action RPG game released back in 1994. The developers have done a fantastic job of upgrading it and improving the controls to make it more responsive. The use of modern generation graphics breathes new life into this excellent platformer. Even if you haven't played the original, there is plenty here for newcomers. If you are familiar or semi-familiar with the original, this version is a wonderful upgrade and a way to relive the nostalgic era of classic platformers. The game is bright, lots of fun and challenging in many ways. It was sheer joy to play a game that wonderfully updated the original game and revisited this old school platform RPG game from the 90s.

The Roller Champions Beta was a brief window into the new IP from Ubisoft. It's based around roller derby being merged into 3 versus 3 battle royale. The game combines elements of roller derby, racing games and sports games. I can draw comparisons in terms of gameplay of Rocket League, you and your team pit yourself against others online. In this game, you take control of a player instead of a vehicle though.

"rollerchampions1"

Roller Champions is based on roller derby, but this takes a 3 person team format, you have to capture the ball and put it into the goal. It's not that straightforward, when you capture the ball you must navigate a lap of the course before you can score. You must avoid enemy players to get the goal to open. You can go it all alone by dodging others or pass it to fellow team members, if you (and your team) manage that the goal will open and you get the opportunity to score. Opposition players can push, kick and take the ball off you. The game is based on these 3 versus 3 formats, where you can use your teams to pass the ball.

"rollerchampions2"

The graphics have a shine and you get a real sense of momentum when you play. You feel the crash and come together as players hustle for the ball to gain possession. It's fast-paced and there is always something happening in the game. There is rarely a dull moment. All of this combined with the solid online netplay and plenty of people on the servers was a great experience. The game is a mix of a racer, beat 'em up and sports game, these elements make Roller Champions.

"rollerchampions3"

I'm not sure if the balance is perfect but I think minor tweaks are required for defending teams, I feel the offensive teams are a bit overpowered. Apart from this point, it's an enjoyable experience. The game is straightforward to pick and the controls are simple too. Before you know it you are stuck in the action as well. It will be interesting to see how the final game turns out, this beta does give a good flavour of what we can look forward to.

"hades4"

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.

It does, however, add a nice break to regular gameplay and is novel at first.

"planeeffect2"

The game has three modes: normal, narrative hint and guided. Normal mode gives no prompts or assistance when trying to solve puzzles. It's all up to you to figure how to navigate each area. The narrative hint mode gives prompts as to what needs to be done next, usually in the form of an icon above the player. The guided mode provides an indicator that will mark the next puzzle to solve in the form of a line that directs you. You can change the mode type in-game if you get stuck or if you want more of a challenge. I primarily played the normal mode, which does require patience and for the player to discover every part of each level.

"planeeffect3"

The art style and the isometric gameplay view is unique. I can't fault the visuals, the sound effects and general level design. The art style and level design are gorgeous. There is a huge variety of environments to keep the game fresh. While the game mechanics seem straightforward, they change depending on the items available in each section. Depending on your game mode, your experience will vary greatly. Normal is for the people who want a challenge and want to figure it all out for themselves. Narrative hints and guidance makes the game much easier to navigate. I did enjoy the game, but I did feel some events were repetitive at times. At times you must backtrack for clues and to pick up items which can be tedious at times. I did like playing a puzzle focus with very few cues to assist. The game is about discovery and exploration in a beautiful dystopian world. It's an enjoyable puzzle/platformer.

Overall: 7.5/10

Super Sami Roll is the wonderfully bright platform/action game from indie developers Sonzai games. It's inspired; by a host of '80s and '90s platform games.

Super Sami Roll lands somewhere in between Marble Madness and Super Monkey Ball from a game mechanics perspective. You take the form of a ball that rolls through wonderfully rendered 3D worlds; each section has its theme from deserts to pyramids and a frozen world. I have to say the 3D worlds remind me of Super Mario 64, it's very reminiscent to me, but that's due to the 3D nature of the world full of bright colours and wonderful characters. The map reminds me of Super Mario 3, while the music and splash screens of the levels remind me of Sonic. The gameplay's a mix of Super Monkey Ball and Marble Madness. You guide your character through lush areas to finish the levels and face the boss. Pixel art helps to get across this picturesque world.

"supersamiroll1"

Each section map area has multiple levels where you will have to use your wits and skills to navigate. Game mechanics are introduced; slowly as you progress through levels to allow for some mastery before the; introduction of the next game mechanic. Game mechanics are roll, rob, jump, and grab items. The levels consist of a mix of speed runs and accuracy where you must be precise as opposed to quick; this is layered with platform pieces too. It's a healthy mix of platformer, fast action puzzler, and frantic speed runs. The difficulty can be; changed to cater for how much of a challenge you want.

"ersamiroll2"

While the game is inspired; by a host of platformers and action games, there is plenty in the game that makes it unique. With the numerous game mechanics and the use of various environments, while reminiscent of a host of classic games. There are plenty of unique elements that make it stand on its own feet. You will get annoyed at the odd camera position where your; platform is obstructed by; your camera. It does have a camera issue, like most 3D platformers. The camera angles in 3D platformers have never been perfect and; this is no exception, but this is the only minor teething issue. The soundtrack, level design and sound effects all work well; it has that chaotic sense of fun.

"supersamiroll3"

Super Sami Roll is a bright and fun platformer action game that draws from the past but is, updated for modern gaming. It's chaotic fun with lots of ups and downs. The game has a learning curve that will require you to put in the time, which means it will be challenging but, the addition of varying difficulty means you can cater it; to your needs. I loved playing something; that isn't novel in modern games while being a homage to some classic games.

The game runs at 60 FPS on the Switch. It's currently priced; at $14.99.

It had a Wii version in 2008 and is now available on current and next-gen consoles.

"gleylancer1"

Gleylancer follows the classic 2D retro space shooter style where your spaceship navigates through a host of levels while avoiding enemy ships, aliens debris and other nasty objects that will kill you instantly. One hit kills you. As you progress through each level, you collect powers that will transform you from a single shooter to a twin and ultimately a triple shooter spaceship. Your ship shoots a single beam along the x-axis; however, your two supplementary shooters can be rotated 360 degrees to allow you to hit enemies in all directions. There are a plethora of power-ups to pick up that will adjust your playstyle.

"gleylancer2"

Design-wise it compromises the classic side-scrolling levels of a 2D retro platformer but has all the action and mayhem of a shooter. The visuals have that classic 2D feel. The game follows the standard shooter level design whereby you navigate sections and gain powers up as you go along until you encounter a final boss who will require some more shooter skills. Control and game mechanics are simple but lots of fun, the game feels responsive.

"hades4"

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.

There are issues in certain sections of the game where you must backtrack for items which can be tedious at times. You may find the puzzles trickier than they first seem too. The game does have a mix of random events where the player; ends up being transported to different environments, which can be jarring at times. Normal mode gives no prompts or assistance when trying to solve puzzles. It's all up to you to figure how to navigate each area.

You feel in total control of your ship as you navigate levels.

Modern-day updates include the ability to rewind, save the state and load the state of the game.

"hades4"

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.

We got our hands on a preview build of Splashteam's second game Tinykin. Tinykin is a wonderful cartoon animated 3D adventure. It does pay homage to Pikmin for sure and does give me Toy Story vibes through the look and feel. The perspective is from a small character (the size of a small toy) in a human world. You start in the living room, which seems massive, and you encounter a whole cast of creatures on your journey. What hit me straight away was the stunning cartoony graphics that were bright but in a beautiful 3D world. I was more than pleasantly surprised; it was polished from start to finish.

"tinykin1"

The preview does give you an entire level to discover the game mechanics and a feel for the game. You play as Milo, the explorer, who is in this amazing living room full of life and creatures. The game does have that mix of platform and puzzle all rolled into one. It's a joyful, bright, and wonderful experience. The game has tons of characters, and the cartoon art style gives a fantastic look and feel.

Milo has a supporting cast of Tinykins little creatures with special powers; in the preview, you encounter two types of Tinykins who can move items and blow things up.

"tinykin4"

A mix of platform, strategy and using Tinykins constitute the gameplay. It's a very fun platform game with a lot of puzzles to solve in a beautifully rendered world. I played the game using an Xbox controller, and the controls are super intuitive. The game does give directed guidelines as you uncover a new mechanic. The game is super slick and a real joy to play.

"tinykin5"

I was impressed from the start with the wonderful look and feel. The game looks and feels polished. The game mechanics were intuitive, and the art style lends itself to a beautiful looking game. This one level was a great taster, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the full game holds and how much richer it will be.

It's a mix of action, platformer, puzzles and tonnes of action too. It would fall into the Metroidvanias genre, a mixture of Metroid and Castlevania. You can expect a beautifully pixelated world that you must explore to uncover every secret and become the best version of yourself. It does have a classic retro feel too.

"alwaslegacy1"

First impressions of the game were a bright and mystical world full of secrets. The main character has no idea where they are or what's going. The story starts from a point where you must figure out why Alwa is here and you; begin your journey. You must explore numerous dungeons to figure out your place in the world. As you move through each level, you find new characters, powerups, spells, and the story unravels. It's an adventure that isn't linear and will require you to traverse, teleport and find secrets in every nook and cranny. As new areas become unlocked, there is some retracing of your steps. I loved the interconnectivity of the world and how there are multiple ways to access different; areas in a deep rich map.

"alwaslegacy2"

Alwa's Legacy gets a lot of things right from gameplay, visuals, sound, level design, and just that it's a fun game. Like any action-adventure game, there is, levelling and finding new powers along your journey. It does a great job of being flexible, and you can power up as you see fit. I enjoyed the variety between action, platform and puzzle mechanics in the game. I never got bored; the story, while nothing helps push forward your existence in the world. World and level design are superb the world; consists of a maze of interconnected dungeons with new creatures in new areas of the world. On your way home, you encounter a whole array of challenges that will block your journey home.

The Plane Effect combines the unique art style with an isometric view that gives the game an amazing; look and feel. The art style is gorgeous and sublime. The character has a minimalistic look - you wear glasses and carry around a briefcase as you navigate this fantastic dystopian world. You leave your boring office job to discover this crazy world ahead of you. The world is a mix of bright, beautiful, with rich scenic levels that are complemented, with dark and barren levels too. All the levels are fantastic full of little details that make them seem more immersive. The deep rich sound effects and an intriguing dystopian world help drive the story.

"planeeffect1"

Gameplay is a mix of platformer and puzzles to solve. Primarily, you can run, walk, jump and use items. The use item action varies depending on the puzzle you are solving and items available in each area; this is environment-dependent. There are issues in certain sections of the game where you must backtrack for items which can be tedious at times. You may find the puzzles trickier than they first seem too. The game does have a mix of random events where the player; ends up being transported to different environments, which can be jarring at times.

You feel in total control of your ship as you navigate levels.

Modern-day updates include the ability to rewind, save the state and load the state of the game. The rewind features allow you to replay any point that you may die at, this will happen often; this is very useful due to the difficulty of the game and probably is the only way to finish the game!

"hades4"

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.

It does have a classic retro feel too.

"alwaslegacy1"

First impressions of the game were a bright and mystical world full of secrets.

The retro pixelated style gives the game a real glossy and nostalgic feel.

"hades4"

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.

I enjoyed the variety between action, platform and puzzle mechanics in the game. I never got bored; the story, while nothing helps push forward your existence in the world. World and level design are superb the world; consists of a maze of interconnected dungeons with new creatures in new areas of the world. You leave your boring office job to discover this crazy world ahead of you. The world is a mix of bright, beautiful, with rich scenic levels that are complemented, with dark and barren levels too. Normal mode gives no prompts or assistance when trying to solve puzzles. It's all up to you to figure how to navigate each area.

It comes in at a super low $5.59 (Switch at the time of review) - $6.99 (PS store) price depending on what platform you are playing, and - $6.99 (Xbox store).

Back in the 90s, the side-scrolling shooter was a staple amongst all consoles; Gleylancer was released on the Sega Mega Drive exclusively in Japan.

"hades4"

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.
