Two garbage men are about to have one hell of a day! As a murderous cult consisting of the entertainment industry's elite, are out to kill them. James and Billy take a detour from their normal everyday route, when they come under attack by a biplane, try to control a wildfire, fight off a giant robot and wade their way through the sewers only to be set upon by a famous magician & their drag wearing alligator. And that isn’t the end of it either. They certainly need to have a sit down with their trade union after their shift ends - if they survive it?!

"hollywoodtrashTPB_1"

Well Mad Cave Studios has never failed to publish anything less that interesting. Now we have all known Hollywood to be the place where dreams come through and movies are being filmed left, right and centre! Movie stars reside in their big ass mansions in the Hills and normal folk still continue about their everyday lives. That includes our local garbage men, who have found themselves in a spot of bother when they unknowingly end up in the bad books of Hollywood’s most influential exec. With a cast of crazy individuals that make up the secretive Privy Council, some unrealistic chaos and many near death interactions.

All under the ‘control’ of the head of the Privy council - Papa. Also known as the elusive King of Hollywood ‘Mr. Grapevine’. A disillusioned individual, who dresses like Vincent Van Ghoul from Scooby Doo, who has blackmail on all of the important people in the city. The members of his council soon dwindled through some explosive endings, all of the individuals involved each had their own quirk. However the one character that stood out was Blah-Blah, also known as Talk-Show Queen Miss Opez. Man her backstory was tragic! Although ‘Papa’ set up her career and a marriage that secured her acceptance into the entertainment industry, she was just as driven as him and held so much resentment towards the man in the end. That arc alone was enough just to read this series. I’m unsure if there will be more issues, as this collected release is marked down as a Volume 1.

This however is just a cover up for her true intentions, as in reality she is researching occultism. This will tie in to her family history and the steps needed for her initiation into her family's religious sect. Perhaps its just by chance, but the professors and leading occult members to which she has encountered are now under attack. Mysterious as it may sound, each of them have suffered debilitating mental attacks that either kill them or leave them unconscious. The connection between each of these incidents is the use of a computer connected to the internet. Just how is Aiko and her family connected to these attacks and what exactly is the Esoteric Group?

"gammadracoinsvol1_1"

This story takes place between France and Japan, as Aiko is studying the numerous occults through the centuries in preparations for her future role in the family sect. Although at times it was rather difficult to keep following the plot, it was still a good read. It reminded me in a way of The Da Vinci Code, which was the last book I read that dealt with any religious mysteries or corruptions. Whilst reading this story, I felt like this would have made a better live action TV series than a book. Simply for the amount of action that was going on, as well as the corruption, murders and detective work being carried on by the French police. It has all the makings of a decent live action adaptation.

‘Gamma Draconis’ was visually brought to life by Eldo Yoshimizu, the creator of epic Yakuza manga ‘Ryuko’. Bringing back a style of illustration that I haven’t seen in some time, with glimpses of similarities from mangas that came out from the early 2000’s including Nana. The story for Gamma Draconis was created by Benoist Simmat, a French author, journalist and wine critic.

"gammadracoinsvol1_2"

For many, they may not enjoy this series as it is a tad niche. But for others, this will be a joy to own and pick from their book shelves for many years to come. It has intrigue, corruption, mystery, black magic and a search for eternal life. Throw in some unexpected plot twists and some interesting religious history, and you have a solid book right there. However it does have its downfalls, and that lies in the storytelling. Confusion sets in as the pace of the story becomes muddled, due to it being very dialogue heavy. The artwork tends to outshine the story on many occasions and I found it to be a story that even if you sat down and read it all in one sitting - it can be just as overwhelming, even if you managed to space it out.

This is definitely a series that is best suited towards fans of Dan Brown.

Overall: 7/10

The ComicBuzz gaming team and I finally got our chance to get our hands on the final two parts of The Isklander trilogy from Swamp Motel. We did already; review the first part of the Islander trilogy, just in case you want to check out that review.

The Isklander trilogy is a team-based online alternate reality game part puzzle, interactive movie, escape room and scavenger hunt. You and your team have a limited time to solve several multimedia riddles in a limited time.

"isklander1"

The second part of The Isklander trilogy is called The Mermaid’s Tongue, and the third part is called The Kindling Hour. I do not want to give away any spoilers, so I do not really want to talk about the story. All I want to say is that the subsequent parts of the trilogy; continue the story set-up in the first part-Plymouth Point. Plymouth Point is a mystery that involving a person named Ivy Isklander. I think: the less you know about the plot of any mystery game going into it, the better the experience is. I believe this is true for The Isklander trilogy.

I have already mentioned that this is a team-game, for up to six people. You and your team must use your skills to solve the puzzles that arise. The set-up involves you; meeting several characters in the form of a live-action scene and, the rest is up to you and your team. The rest of the game involves you and your team; getting into a spider web of multimedia unknowns as you race against time to solve the puzzles before the time is up.

"isklander3"

To play the game, all you need is a web browser: PC or laptop, cam, mic. I do recommend a pen, paper and some form of headphones and some quiet time. I have to say I really enjoyed the game as a whole; I found the story more intriguing as it went along, the puzzles also got more complex. For me, the live-action scenes pulled me into the plot. It felt very engaging. I enjoyed the acting. For me, it really added to the overall atmosphere of the game. I have to say that I thought the second and third parts seemed a bit short to me. The reason parts two and three felt short; could be that I was having too much fun or maybe due to my team just being so good at puzzle solving.

"isklander2"

The Isklander trilogy was the first time that I experienced this type of team-based online alternate reality game. I had a blast. I can see why some companies would use this type of game for a team-building exercise. It is a very different experience from your PC/console gaming.

I would recommend this game for anyone who likes puzzles games and has several friends to get together with and enjoy themselves. The game is unique, something I think gamers should experience. I look forward to seeing what Swamp Motel can do in the future with this medium. I would say that the ComicBuzz gaming team would love to experience it.

As the Christmas holidays come to an end, Effie is itching to see her best friend Berrit again back at school. However Berrits attention has been completely focused on her new neighbour and sudden new best friend Garance. Who have been lifetime friends of each of her aunts, all from different walks of life with a similar thing in common - they use their powers to help people. A magical mystery to be solved, one that Effie might be able to help with.

"whatthehex_1"

It is such a joy to see a second book being released in this series, as I thoroughly enjoyed the debut of Witches of Brooklyn. She not only dealt with her mother’s passing, her new surroundings and getting to know her new guardians - but she also discovered magic! As Effie is thoroughly welcomed into the society, back in her everyday normal life - things at school aren’t quite going so well. The excitement of Effie being the new girl in school has died off automatically after the Winter break, as a new transfer student has just started in her class. It’s not all purple Lions and moving statues however, as Effie also has to both confront her jealous thoughts if she wants to save her friendship with Berrit and get to know the new girl - that seems to give off an unusual prickling feeling at times. A family road trip suddenly comes to a halt, for a recent widowed Ben (Charles Bateman) with his newly girlfriend Nicky (Ahna Capri) and Ben’s young daughter K.T (Geri Reischl), when they come across a car accident on the highway. After witnessing the car accident, the family heads to the isolated town of Hillsboro to report it to the local sheriff (L.Q. Jones). After trying to report the incident, the family is met with violent locals and with the failure of trying to leave this crazy town, they’re warned by the sheriff (L.Q. Jones)., deputy Tobey (Alvy Moore), the local physician Doc Duncan (Strother Martin) and the local priest (Charles Robinson), of the strange occurrences, that has left the locals paranoid in fear, due to several gruesome murders and the mysterious disappearance of eleven local children gone missing. This soon becomes reality for Ben and Nicky, when Ben’s daughter K.T suddenly goes missing and is believed through the local priest, that a dangerous satanic cult of Satan worshippers are behind it all.

‘’The Brotherhood of Satan’’ (1971) is an American low budget horror movie, that surrounds a family consisting of Ben (Charles Bateman), who’s wife died years prior is now on a road trip with his newly girlfriend Nicky (Ahna Capri) and Ben’s young daughter K.T(Geri Reischl), who are on their way to visit K.T’s grandmother’s house to celebrate K.T’s birthday, which unfortunately for them soon comes to a halt, when they come across a brutal car accident on the highway, leading them to go to the small town of Hillsboro to report the accident they came across to the local sheriff. This film starts with a bizarre opening that may cause confusion to audiences on what is going on, as before we are introduced to our main protagonists Ben and his family, the film shows what had happened that had lead to the car accident Ben and his family had witnessed the aftermaths of, in which the opening of the film shows a continuing theme within this movie, which is children’s toys coming to life and killing those within the town, as a toy tank is shown being brought to life and destroying a car with a family inside, which continues to be even more creepy, as a child is seen walking away from the crash with the toy tank in his hand, indicating something sinister is happening, Ben and his family soon experience the strange occurrences themselves, when they try to leave but are forced to stay, due to a mystical force, that is not letting them or any of the locals leave the town. While the local sheriff (L.Q. Jones).and some of the other locals try to come up with a logical explanation for not being able to leave or the reasoning behind all the gruesome murders and missing children within the town, they all laugh at the local priest (Charles Robinson), who suggests their dealing with witchcraft, but they’re soon proven along with Ben and Nicky, that the priest maybe onto something, when K.T (Geri Reischl), becomes the next child to suddenly go missing and more dead bodies start piling up.

"brotherhoodofsatan1"

The film introduces our main protagonists Ben (Charles Bateman) and his newly girlfriend Nicky (Ahna Capri), as a loving couple, due to them holding each other’s gazes throughout and their first scene within the film is them passionately having a private moment, before they’re interrupted by Ben’s daughter K.T (Geri Reischl and a sudden pouring down of lashing rain. Ben’s newly girlfriend Nicky (Ahna Capri) is portrayed from the very start to have been treating Ben’s daughter K.T (Geri Reischl) as if she was her own, as despite K.T not being hers by blood, Nicky is shown being affectionate towards her and K.T seems to reciprocate the same affection, showing there is trust between them, as Nicky’s character isn’t portrayed as a cruel step mother but a doting one instead. The locals within the town of Hillsboro are firstly introduced as crazy town’s people, as they turned dangerously violent the minute Ben and his family showed up, as due to all the strange occurrences and the mystery behind no one being able to come in or out of the town, has caused the locals to become paranoid, as they became suspicious of Ben and his family, as they were the first outside people to get into the town. The character of the local sheriff (L.Q. Jones) is shown in most of his scenes to be smoking, which indicates he might be using it as a copying mechanism, as character traits like this has made his character stand out, as he shows more emotion and presence on screen than our lead protagonist, as he has moments where he loses it, due to the stress of how he can’t solve the mystery, which is even more frustrating for him, as his niece is one of the missing children and even though he is sceptical at first, he does step up, when he finally comes to terms and believes the priest (Charles Robinson), that there is something satanic at play. The character that stood out the most was the cult leader (Strother Martin), due to his performance being quite eccentric, as he embodied the craziness and evilness of a satanic worshipper with the pride and egotistic mind of a leader, who wants those to bow down to him and kiss his hand.

This ambitious low budget horror film was a truly entertaining watch, with its unique visual ideas that were quite well executed while others were not. This film had one of the most strange openings, that involved a toy tank destroying a car with a family inside, with the film showing the back and forth of seeing a toy tank to the tank becoming life size and with no context on why or how this is happening, it will keep audiences intrigued to see how this ties into the overall plot. Along with the toy tank, the film also has other toys come to life, that were visually quite well executed, such as the film showing the contrast between a toy of a knight on a horse reflecting in the shadow on the wall behind it to seeing the same knight on a horse brought to life and having their shadow reflect the image of the killing of its victim. One of the killings that wasn’t executed visually as well as some of the others, was where a creepy doll is about to murder a couple but the scene comes off more laughable that creepy, as it looks as though someone was just shaking the doll in front of the camera and edited to look as though it had killed their victim. The most visually striking scenes were those with the satanic cult, as due to the creepy imagery that is shown describing horrific events and the red lighting that helps set up a more gothic feel, it causes those scenes to stand out, as it visually looks as though it’s not in the same contemporary setting, as the rest of the movie with our main protagonists. The character of the cult leader (Strother Martin) stood out from the rest of the cast, as the actor Strother Martin, who is mainly known as a character actor, looked as though he had the most fun with his role, as he had brought much needed life into the film. Other than the character of the cult leader (Strother Martin) giving a more of a memorable performance, there is a sense of disconnect for our other characters such as our main protagonists Ben (Charles Bateman) and Nicky (Ahna Capri), as they don’t really get much to do, other than having a sweet family dynamic and it’s the same with the characters of the sheriff (L.Q. Jones) and the local priest (Charles Robinson), as it felt as though they were all doomed from the start.

"brotherhoodofsatan2.jpg"

I highly recommend watching ‘The Brotherhood of Satan’ (1971), as I guarantee you will be surprised by how quite ambitious the film tries to be, as despite it being low budget, the filmmakers tried to make something unique, which is evident especially in it’s opening scene and even though the film doesn’t always perfectly execute all their visual ideas, it will leave audiences with chills from the film’s fiery satanic bloody ceremony to the eyes of those staring back in its dark unsettling end.

‘The Brotherhood of Satan’ (1971) is a mix between the horror film ‘Children of the Corn’ meets ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ , as the children in this film are used as pawns by something satanic and the film also indicates towards a sickening reason behind those involved in the satanic cult. ‘The Brotherhood of Satan’ (1971) is directed by Bernard McEveety, who famously directed Jodie Foster’s first film Disney’s ‘Napoleon and Samantha’ in 1972.

Special thanks to Vertigo Releasing, who has announced that ‘The Brotherhood of Satan’ (1971) will be available on Blu ray with a broad range of special features including new audio commentary and much more, to be released on the 30th of August 2021.

"Night Matsuri"

Hello everyone and welcome back to another subscription box review. Today I will be taking an indepth look into what was included in July's edition of Nihon Box. Which was filled to the brim, full of goodies you are sure to enjoy during those long summer days. So let's get started with the usual info.

Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to for what I find a very affordable price each month.

Like SoKawaii, the more months you pay upfront the cheaper the price for individual boxes will be. https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

3 Months is a single payment of €86.97, making each box €28.99, plus shipping costs.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Due to the latest European VAT legislation, the overall cost after shipping has increased slightly. The folks behind Nihon Box have done all they can to make this transition as simple as possible, so they have taken the necessary steps & changes in order to include the VAT directly in the subscription’s price. This change will normally be effective starting from the next renewal of your subscription, with the addition of the VAT in the final price (19% for Germany). And from August, as a small gift of appreciation to their overseas customers they will be including a 1000yen gift card to their YattaJapan.com store. As an idea of how much the charge has gone up, prior to August I was paying €32.89 a month. The new price I pay now is €40.45 a month, which is a nice increase but I believe the value is still there within the box.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxjuly2021_1"

The first item this month is a beautiful Hatsune Miku Summer Matsuri PVC statue from Taito, measuring 18cm tall. This very colorful figure has so much going on in its design, that celebrates those famous summer festivals we have all seen in Japanese anime. This hologram diva is wearing a red, yellow and blue short yukata, with images of fireworks on one of her arm sleeves. Her accessories include a kitsune mask on her head, as well as a uchiwa hand fan in one hand and a candy apple (ringo ame) in the other. She is sure to make a great addition to the figure collection, which is ever growing thanks to these subscription boxes. If you have missed out on getting this figure, then I suggest getting in contact with Leanne’s Anime over on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/leannesanime/

"nihonboxjuly2021_2"

If you fancy mimicking Miku’s design and getting in the matsuri spirit, then you will certainly enjoy this small uchiwa matsuri fan. This accessory is perfect for the summer weather, it's lightweight and portable. Allowing you to fan yourself with a slight cool breeze as you enjoy the summer, no matter where you are. This is a traditional hand fan that is still pretty popular and iconic to own today. At least you never have to worry about your small electric fan running out of power, when you own one of these.

"nihonboxjuly2021_3"

Moving on, we have a serving tray, featuring the characters from ‘The Quintessential Quintuplets’. An anime that debuted from Tezuka Productions back in 2019. The series follows the daily life of a high school student Futaro Uesugi, who is hired as a private tutor for a group of identical quintuplets: Ichika, Nino, Miku, Yotsuba, and Itsuki Nakano. At the very beginning of the story, it is indicated Futaro will marry one of the Nakano Quintuplets but the identity of the bride is unknown until near the end of the story. The design on this tray is of the five sisters as they stand together in their yukatas, as fireworks explode behind their heads. This manga series has become very popular as of late, so I am sure there are a few fans of this series already that will be thrilled with this bit of unexpected merch.

"nihonboxjuly2021_4"

Now what is the best function of a tray, other than putting snacks on it?! So our next item this month is an Azuki flavour Taiyaki. Which is a common sight at festival food stalls. This fish-shaped sweet pastry dessert has a large filling of red bean paste (azuki). However the outer pastry tasted more like soft ice cream wafers, perhaps that might have been the impact of a long journey across the globe. Either way, I would assume this would taste better fresh.

"nihonboxjuly2021_5"

"nihonboxjuly2021_6"

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba returns once again in our Nihon Box, as we get a blind box from the Fuwakororin range. This series has six different character designs, all appearing as a mini round plush. The one I received is our lead man - Tanjiro.

"nihonbxjuly2021_7"

And now we get to our final item for Julys’ box, which is an Assassination Classroom towel. Why you may ask? A tad random maybe? Well Japan is damn HOT in the Summer, even during the matsuri festivals. So a towel is always essential to have on hand, especially for those that may be working and performing during these festivals. This ‘mini towel’, although pretty large in my opinion as you can see above as I hung it up on a door for size comparison. It’s bright yellow in color, with Koro Sensei’s face in the middle, with the shows title at the bottom of the towel.

So there we have it everyone, that was July’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from Demon Slayer, Assassination Classoom and The Quintessential Quintuplets, to the worlds favourite hologram diva - Hatsune Miku. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Night Matsuri”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about Natsu Matsuri, as they give a detailed description of the many types of matsuri festivals that take place around Japan. Mentioning their origins and the importance of these to local communities. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

Effie becomes involved in a rather unusual case within the community, when serious accidents start becoming more frequent at a certain crossroads. A magical mystery to be solved, one that Effie might be able to help with.

"whatthehex_1"

It is such a joy to see a second book being released in this series, as I thoroughly enjoyed the debut of Witches of Brooklyn. In the first book, we met young Effie. Who had just lost her mother and was more or less dumped on the steps of her ‘Aunt Selimene’s home by a caseworker. She not only dealt with her mother’s passing, her new surroundings and getting to know her new guardians - but she also discovered magic! Something that has stayed with her ever since and now she gets to meet the fellow witches that live in her area. As Effie is thoroughly welcomed into the society, back in her everyday normal life - things at school aren’t quite going so well. The excitement of Effie being the new girl in school has died off automatically after the Winter break, as a new transfer student has just started in her class. Now all eyes are on Garance, especially Effie’s best friend Berrits’.

This book is filled with excitement, adventure, magic and more! It’s not all purple Lions and moving statues however, as Effie also has to both confront her jealous thoughts if she wants to save her friendship with Berrit and get to know the new girl - that seems to give off an unusual prickling feeling at times. It’s all a part of growing up, as Effie takes on the magical world around her and the challenges of middle school!

"whatthehex_2"

The ‘Witches of Brooklyn’ series is both written and illustrated by the talented Sophie Escabasse, a French author and illustrator living in Montreal.

A Tale of Two Sisters is still considered the highest grossing Korean horror film of all time, and rightly so. This film keeps the audience guessing until the very end, when all is revealed and you are left reeling in shock during the closing credits - I certainly was at least.

She not only dealt with her mother’s passing, her new surroundings and getting to know her new guardians - but she also discovered magic! As Effie is thoroughly welcomed into the society, back in her everyday normal life - things at school aren’t quite going so well.
