ComicBuzz Chats With Jorge Jiménez

With the Kickstarter campaign live for The DC Art of Jorge Jiménez, from Clover Press. We are delighted to be joined by Jorge Jiménez. Jorge is an artist who has worked on numerous comics, including Superboy, Justice League, Superman, Super Sons and Batman.

Can you tell us how it feels to have an art book with your name on it?

It’s a true honor and has made me feel a bit older, lol, since it’s made me realize that I’ve been working on this for 13 or 14 years now, and honestly, it has felt like a blink of an eye. But I’m very happy that the team at Clover, along with DC, considered my work worthy of being in such a beautiful collection. I’m looking forward to all of this reaching the fans of my work and the people who have supported me until now. I feel very grateful, honestly.

As an artist, has your approach to creating art changed?

I’ve always tried to keep the excitement of drawing alive, and for that, I constantly need new sources of inspiration. This means I often look at the work of other professionals—and even other mediums like film, animation, or anime—for reference.

Learning new tools and techniques keeps my style evolving, sometimes through noticeable changes, and other times more subtly. I also try to adapt my drawing style to fit the type of story we’re telling. Right now, I’m leaning towards more simplified lines and using fewer textures. In this current stage, I’m very focused on improving my visual storytelling and narrative flow overall.

Do you have a favourite DC character?

My favorite DC character—and probably my favorite overall—is Superman, with Batman coming in a very close second. Honestly, I do try to be a functioning adult, believe me… but whenever I have to make important decisions in life, I can’t help but think: What would Superman do here? You know… I’m a nerd.

Both of them were always part of my childhood, so being able to make a living drawing these characters for the world really is a dream come true.

Is there a particular project at DC Comics that you hold dear to your heart?

There are so many, but if I had to pick just some few of them right now, I’d say Secret Identity and All-Star Superman for Superman, and The Dark Knight Returns and Year One for Batman. These particular titles made me really happy when they first came into my hands.

For fans of your art, what can they expect from The DC Art of Jorge Jiménez

What I tried to do was put myself in the shoes of someone who admires or follows my work, and I asked myself what they would expect from something like this. So I carefully reviewed and selected the pieces I believe fans would enjoy the most.

It turned out to be a very emotional and nostalgic journey for me, because I revisited all my work at DC since the very beginning—character concepts, designs, some storyboards, and lots of inked pages. I just wanted to make sure that everything truly important was collected in a single book.

I imagined what someone who has never owned one of my comics might want… and also what someone who already owns some—or even many—might expect. I tried to find a balance that would make all kinds of readers happy, selecting content that really summarizes this stage of my career and putting it all into your hands in the form of a book.

Then I sent all the material over to the team at Clover, where they’re now doing their magic with it—and doing a brilliant job, I must say.

Can you tell us about the awesome Kickstarter rewards our readers can get from The DC Art of Jorge Jiménez campaign?

Haha, I swear I can’t say a single word, because I want to keep the excitement intact, but I can tell you that the Clover guys have had some really cool ideas!

Any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

I want to thank you for this interview and for helping spread the word about this very special project for me. And if there’s any reader out there who has followed, is following, or would like to follow my work—first of all, thank you! I truly hope you’ll consider picking up this book.

There’s a lot of love poured into it. I’ve spent many years drawing and loving what I do—drawing is my way of connecting with the world. And a book full of my artwork is probably the most special thing I can offer you. So I really hope you enjoy it!

Oh—and don’t forget: Batman #1 is coming this September! Don’t let me down—I’ll be waiting for you there too, haha.

A big hug to everyone, and once again, thank you so much!

We would like to say a big thank you to Jorge for chatting with us, and we wish Jorge the best of luck with The DC Art of Jorge Jiménez.
