"Kynseed is the game we’ve always dreamed of making," said PixelCount Co-Founder Neal Whitehead. "When Charlie and I first met we were united by our shared passion for the kind of quirky, unique and very British adventures we were able to develop together with the team at Lionhead, and we're certain we're not alone. Over the last few years working on Kynseed we’ve seen our Early Access community grow to more 100,000 players. We're looking forward to opening the land of Quill to even more players, and we can promise launch day won't be the end of this tale..."

Sir Ian is best known as one of the founders of Games Workshop (Warhammer), co-creator of the Fighting Fantasy series of adventure gamebooks, Eidos (Tomb Raider) and a General Partner at Hiro Capital. “When I first discovered Kynseed, I immediately wanted to find out more about the team behind it,” said Sir Ian Livingstone. “I reached out to Neal and Charlie in 2020 and learned that they were former members of the Fable team at Lionhead. To my mind, Kynseed was a game with incredible potential, and I wanted to help them bring their vision to the world. There is so much to do when playing Kynseed, from exploring, questing, foraging, farming, and crafting to thrilling combat with strange creatures. The combat alone deserves to be a game in itself! I hope people will enjoy Neal and Charlie’s beautifully-crafted game because what they have developed is something rather special.”

Somber is the latest interesting indie game that; is full of intrigue and wonder. Somber isn't truly an open-world game; it's an action platformer that is hand-painted, which gives a beautifully unique art style.

"somber1"

The game makes wonderful use of lighting and 2D backgrounds to give a 3D sense to the world. Each level in the map has its own theme and lighting; you go from chamber to chamber, solving puzzles to keys, to unlock other areas in the game. You take the role of this little creature who zips across the landscape; you are a dark cloud with an eye in essence. This puffy cloud is just travelling this dark terrain, trying to help anyone in your path.

The gameplay consists of distinct rooms that are interconnected; in some instances, there are multiple entry/exit points for the rooms. Each room will have its own unique puzzle to solve, power-ups to collect and new mechanics to discover. I loved the puzzles, everything from the simple well thought puzzles to be solved; the game lends itself to this dark, mysterious world where so much is known. As you progress through levels, more of the story and what happens to unfold. The platforming elements scale in difficulty as your progress; and chain what you have learned throughout the game.

"somber2"

The graphics and presentation are wonderful; every sprite and character is stunningly animated. The world meshes the background, enemies and the player in this gloomy dark atmospheric environment that needs to be explored and enjoyed. A wonderful, sombre music score is present throughout, adding to the tension and unease of the world. It's wonderfully presented, and the sound quality is superb.

"somber3"

The 2D indie platformer puzzle game has really pushed boundaries in terms of game and level design, using layering, lighting, and sound to build a tense but wonderful environment. The game is pure fun, and I was glued to it. Playing on the Steamdeck was a bonus too. Solid gameplay and game design make for a fantastic adventure.

Overall: 8/10

Developer: State of Play

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X (Reviewed) |S

Genre: Adventure

Publisher: 11 bit studios

South of the Circle is set in the 1960s when the Cold War; is in full swing. This wonderfully intriguing story is played out; by Peter and Clara, who are Cambridge academics. This; is a truly interactive gaming experience that has; a consistent cinematic feel throughout. South of the Circle is created by BAFTA winners State of Play; the game does have a pedigree to live up to.

"southofthecircle1"

South of the Circle has this beautiful art style which is fully motion captured. This gives a sense of realism to the whole game, which is complemented; by the superb voice acting and soundtrack. Even though the game is animated, it doesn't detract or make the story less believable but enriches the gaming experience. Every voice actor is superb and does make the story more believable. It's wonderful; acting, great storytelling and the player's interactions with the world are nuanced. The game has a pure cinematic feel throughout, and the narration and direction are truly wonderful. The Cold War setting adds another sense of realism to the story and adds; a whole other level of intrigue to the proceedings.

"southofthecircle2"

The soundtrack and general sound production are superb; everything in terms of visual and sound production is top-notch. It gives the game a beautiful polish.

Gameplay is primarily based; on reacting to situations and making choices according to your conscience. Your choices will change the dialogue and, ultimately, the path you take. There are no right or wrong answers; the player; is taken on an amazing journey.

"southofthecircle7"

This; is a wonderfully amazing experience that traverses all kinds of emotions while keeping you on the edge of your seat. The voice acting and emotional narrative make this game. The setting of the Cold War paints a background and setting where you become immersed and lost in the story. This game needs to be experienced and enjoyed, it's hard to say how gripping I found it, but I couldn't put it down once I started playing it. I found the trailer for the game intriguing, and the game exceeded my expectations.

Overall: 9/10
Developer: Wako Factory

Platforms: PC, Switch

Genre: Action, Adventure

Publisher: Hound Picked Games, Wako Factory

In 2017 Wako Factory released Samurai Riot; they have just released Samurai Riot Definitive Edition, which is the enhanced version with tons of improvement. This game is a side-scrolling 2D arcade beat 'em up. It's reminiscent of Final Fight and Streets of Rage in terms of gameplay and action. The game has a Japanese Myth theme. The game supports both single and co-op modes.

The art style is a mystical Japanese landscape littered with samurai, demons and civilians. You can choose between two characters to navigate this lush land. Game mechanics are the ability to use your weapon, kick, jump, block and dash. There isn't a huge amount of variation in the combat; the ability to use shuriken and grenades adds something to the mix. The combos are limited, but this doesn't diverge much from how the classic arcade beat 'em ups though. Controls are super easy to get a handle with only a few buttons in play. You will get the hang of them very quickly.

"samurairiotde1"

You will encounter a lot of the same enemies throughout the levels. The bosses are cool and provide some different considerations to beat them. The huge bosses make navigating each level worth it; the levels build-up to this point where a huge monster and massive boss with unique attacks will challenge you. You will have to adapt your gameplay to beat them. I love the bosses; it makes the level exploration even more worth it. Button bashing won't beat them. The game has a local co-op system that allows you to change commands and build up to a special attack too. The levels are navigated both horizontally and vertically.

"samurairiotde2"

The game animation supports 60fps; on Steam, I found the gameplay smooth and consistent throughout. The art style and theme made for a slick-looking game. I loved the whole look and feel. Samurai Riot Definitive Edition does remind me of a whole host of 80s and 90s, such as Final Fight and Streets of Rage. It's stripped back to basics; the emphasis is on the gameplay and game mechanics. You rearrange and move pieces around a board to solve a puzzle; the complexity comes in the obstacles you have to avoid and the limited options to move the pieces. It's a simple idea, but that's the brilliance. This simple idea becomes more complex as you progress the game.

The Greek Tragedy theme is used as the basis of the puzzles and the artefacts you build.

"sokobos2"

There are 60 levels which get more challenging as you progress. It does remind me of SNES and Mega Drive games, and it's somewhere in between Mario and Sonic games but with an emphasis on puzzles. Retro puzzler is probably the closest in terms of genre. The game takes a humourful look at the genre of platform games; you play as an enemy in a normal platform game from the view of the enemy's perspective. This does give the game a unique theme and context to the entire game, which is built upon as your progress through the game.

"wunderlingdx_1"

The main differentiator between this game and retro platformer and puzzle games is that the character automatically moves from left to right and reverses when you hit an obstacle such as a wall. You don't control the lateral movement of the character at all. The player is in control of dashing, jumping, and using special abilities. While there is a huge amount of platform elements to Wunderling DX, the game is a puzzle game in essence. The player must figure out the best route to get the goal. After completing a series of puzzle-based levels, you will encounter the boss level, where the dynamic changes, and you must defeat the boss enemy.

"wunderlingdx_2"

The game is a beautiful and fun-filled platform puzzle game that has a humorous look at puzzle platforms. It's inspired by games from the SNES and Mega Drive but firmly stands on its own due to the humour, turning gaming conventions on their head, and allowing the user to only jump or use a special item as opposed to fully control the movement of your character like in a platform game.

A thoroughly enjoyable retro puzzle.

A free demo of Wunderling DX is available on Steam and Switch too.

Overall: 7/10

I played the demo of Silt on Steam over the last week; or so, it's an interesting indie game that is a healthy mix of intrigue and adventure.

Silt has this beautiful film Noir feel to it. The use of primarily black and white colours gives the player a wonderful underwater world to explore. The lack of colours highlights the sense of mystery and discovery throughout.

"silt1"

You assume the role of this diver in the depths of the sea; you must navigate an array of puzzles to proceed deeper into the endless sea.

Every level has its nuances to figure out; the game does encourage the player to discover puzzles and figure them out. You are given just the right amount of directions; the game lets you explore the puzzles and levels in your own time. The game uses a few buttons, so it's straightforward to pick up and play.

The diver can possess creatures and assume their powers; each creature you encounter has its unique abilities. Each creature has its unique ability that you will use to solve the puzzles. The dark nature of the game makes every creature standout this accented by the brilliant use of light in the game.

"silt2"

The demo gives the player enough of a taste to get a feel for the game.

I loved the art style and the art direction of the game. The film noir feel does give the game a wonderfully dark and mysterious atmosphere. The game is beautiful; the use of light has such an impact and helps to break the black and white feel of the game.

The game demo does deliver a rich and enjoyable experience. I'm a big fan of puzzles in games, where the emphasis is on exploration and discovery. This game does give a wonderful dark world for you to explore with some fantastic cinematics.
