Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is the wonderfully updated version of the same game that was released for the Sega Megadrive in 1994. It's updated for modern generation consoles while keeping the gameplay and general charm of the game intact. It is a throwback to old school RPG action games from the early 90s.

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is an action-adventure RPG that remains faithful to the original title but has spruced up graphics and brings it into the modern console generation. While the graphics don't match the levels of AAA titles, it does a great job of making them fit for this generation of gamer. At its heart, it is a platformer with RPG elements thrown in, you navigate numerous dungeons, solve puzzles and extract information from multiple characters in each environment. It follows the classic platformer game mechanics of collecting coins, kills enemies, dodges pitfalls, traps and progresses to more complex levels.

"Wonder

The level design of action elements, platformer sections and puzzles are densely packed into each area which consists of a lot of dungeons. The platform and puzzle mechanics are the standouts for me, they have managed to replicate the original but improve them as well. The controls are responsive and you always feel in total control.

Each dungeon and environment has been rendered using a mix of 2D and 3D animation which gives the levels and dungeons a bigger sense of scale. Asha and Pepelogoo, her companion, are vivid with the use of bright colours to bring their personalities to life. The use of vivid colours brings each area and dungeon to life too. Levels have multiple planes and you navigate them to find power-ups or items required to further your quest. The characters are rendered in a wonderful cartoon style that is thematically present throughout the game. The diverse areas and the cartoony graphics give this game a real modern look and feel which sets the stage for compelling gameplay.

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is a wonderful recreation of the classic action RPG game released back in 1994. The developers have done a fantastic job of upgrading it and improving the controls to make it more responsive. The use of modern generation graphics breathes new life into this excellent platformer. Even if you haven't played the original, there is plenty here for newcomers. If you are familiar or semi-familiar with the original, this version is a wonderful upgrade and a way to relive the nostalgic era of classic platformers. The game is bright, lots of fun and challenging in many ways. It was sheer joy to play a game that wonderfully updated the original game and revisited this old school platform RPG game from the 90s.

For the uninitiated, Ratchet & Clank is the much-praised third-person platform shooter developed by Insomniac Games. Ratchet & Clank are the dynamic duo trying to save the world.

The story follows the main characters Ratchet & Clank as they get thrown in between dimensions to defeat the evil Doctor Nefarious. The game features an entire story that requires little knowledge of the franchise, so those new to the series don't need to know anything about prior games. It's a standalone game in that sense and the narrative is akin to a cartoon action film with excellent cinematics. The story and plot are developed by completing a series of missions across the galaxy, each different planet having its enemies, characters and unique terrain. The rift apart in the title refers to the interdimensional travel in the game where you will get to play as another Lombax known as Rivet. Story-telling weaves in between the two playable characters, the narrative is maintained between switching characters. The switch between characters is seamless during the gameplay.

"RACRA_Hoverboots"

The gameplay is centred around fantastic platform action mixed with a third-person shooter. Both game genres are executed impeccably, the action is fast-paced and you have a plethora of guns that give a thrilling third-person shooter. The platform elements are challenging at times with many environments making use of a whole variety of gaming mechanics. Then there are puzzles, inter galaxy travel and a cohesive story underpinning all the gameplay elements. There is also character levelling up and weapon upgrade features too. While this seems like a small feature, I loved the sheer amount of weapons and what they do. The weaponry in the game is brilliant, it adds a whole element of another edge to the gameplay. Vibration and sounds through the controller are used to enhance the gaming experience and cinematics.

The game allows you to choose what difficulty suits you, you can make it as tough or as easy as you want. Pumpkin Jack is a 3D platformer set in a spooky mystical world with a fantastic cartoony vibe. This is an epic adventure through a hellish world where you play as Jack, the mythical Pumpkin Lord going through multiple levels. Pumpkin Jack is reminiscent of many fantastic 3D platformers, you take control of this hellish Jack character as he battles for good to overcome evil. I know the plot is nothing new but the game has a few gems that make it sound out from most 3D platformers.

"pumpkinjack1"

The designers and developers have created a fantastic spooky world, they have taken the spooky and evil theme and ran with it. The levels are well crafted with a varying degree of difficulty, each level introduces new mechanics that make each new area have a novelty. You will be greeted with a ton of puzzles too throughout each level. Your character can jump, melee and shot bad guys. There are unique sections in each game that break the monotony of just having a standard 3D platformer or problem-solving. The levels and characters are well rendered and the graphics are superb, they have fine-tuned the spooky cartoony feels. A fantastic musical score and theme underpin all the action, the voice acting is superb. The music adds so much to the game and it makes all the elements of the game come together. The boss encounters are fantastic and are probably my favourite parts of the game, the bosses are wonderfully rendered and quite challenging. They add another break from the standard 3D platformer format.

"pumpkinjack2"

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how addictive the game was, the control system is straightforward and easy to pick up and play. Once I spent a couple of hours getting used to game mechanics, I was hooked. The levels offer quite a varied gaming experience, action, puzzles and some aspects that felt like being on a rollercoaster! The game offers varied levels as well, each level has its unique game mechanic and new features. The level of story tension and build-up is done well, the storytelling aids the pace of the game and each level climaxes with a huge boss fight. Pumpkin Jack reminds me of many great 3D platformers but has its twists and humour. This is a fantastic platformer.

As the game is a roguelike, the levels are procedurally generated using various environments as the backdrop to your heroic actions.

"firegirl1"

The game is 2D, but the mixture of the pixelated art style and the side-scrolling adventure gives a 3D feel to the game. Characters are bright and vibrant; the characters bob up and down too all the time. Your spawn point is the fire station. The fire station is where you purchase power-ups that are persisted throughout runs and allow you to tackle the bigger blazes. The roguelike elements come from the fact that you gain money and fans after each fire which help you upgrade your firefighter and their tools. At first, your water hose is weak, and you have little health, but after a few hours, this will increase. You gain cash for finishing missions and saving people; you will gain fans in the process who will also donate to aid you too. Cash can be used for power-ups; fans help you get donations.

"firegirl2"

I love the roguelike genre in general, and I love the novel approach that Firegirl takes. You hack through doors, jump over obstacles, and use your hose to put out fires and float around huge levels. I liked that you must be aware of enemies in platforms; that may be above or below you. It's a fast action-paced game that feels like an arcade game too. The sound, environment, voice-over, and story are all great. The game is polished.

"firegirl3"

I loved the pixelated art style of the game and was unsure how the roguelike elements of the game would work. However, after a few runs, it was clear that their roguelike elements made sense and made it more playable. It also increases the longevity of the game. The game does have a backstory, but I'm more about getting stuck in the game. It's an addictive hack and splash adventure. It melds a mix of platformer elements with lots of actions that reminds me of arcade games. You must explore numerous dungeons to figure out your place in the world. As you move through each level, you find new characters, powerups, spells, and the story unravels. It's an adventure that isn't linear and will require you to traverse, teleport and find secrets in every nook and cranny. As new areas become unlocked, there is some retracing of your steps. I enjoyed the variety between action, platform and puzzle mechanics in the game. I never got bored; the story, while nothing helps push forward your existence in the world. World and level design are superb the world; consists of a maze of interconnected dungeons with new creatures in new areas of the world. The art style is gorgeous and sublime. The character has a minimalistic look - you wear glasses and carry around a briefcase as you navigate this fantastic dystopian world. You leave your boring office job to discover this crazy world ahead of you. The world is a mix of bright, beautiful, with rich scenic levels that are complemented, with dark and barren levels too. All the levels are fantastic full of little details that make them seem more immersive. The deep rich sound effects and an intriguing dystopian world help drive the story.

"planeeffect1"

Gameplay is a mix of platformer and puzzles to solve. Primarily, you can run, walk, jump and use items. The use item action varies depending on the puzzle you are solving and items available in each area; this is environment-dependent. There are issues in certain sections of the game where you must backtrack for items which can be tedious at times. You may find the puzzles trickier than they first seem too. The game does have a mix of random events where the player; ends up being transported to different environments, which can be jarring at times. It does, however, add a nice break to regular gameplay and is novel at first.

"planeeffect2"

The game has three modes: normal, narrative hint and guided. Normal mode gives no prompts or assistance when trying to solve puzzles. It's all up to you to figure how to navigate each area. The narrative hint mode gives prompts as to what needs to be done next, usually in the form of an icon above the player. The guided mode provides an indicator that will mark the next puzzle to solve in the form of a line that directs you. You can change the mode type in-game if you get stuck or if you want more of a challenge. I primarily played the normal mode, which does require patience and for the player to discover every part of each level.

"planeeffect3"

The art style and the isometric gameplay view is unique. I can't fault the visuals, the sound effects and general level design. The art style and level design are gorgeous. There is a huge variety of environments to keep the game fresh. While the game mechanics seem straightforward, they change depending on the items available in each section. Depending on your game mode, your experience will vary greatly. Normal is for the people who want a challenge and want to figure it all out for themselves. Narrative hints and guidance makes the game much easier to navigate. I did enjoy the game, but I did feel some events were repetitive at times. At times you must backtrack for clues and to pick up items which can be tedious at times. I did like playing a puzzle focus with very few cues to assist. The game is about discovery and exploration in a beautiful dystopian world. The first time I felt controller feedback stood out which, doesn't usually happen. Even with the lack of colour - black and white in various shades, the world; is illustrated in amazing detail. The game would not be out of place as a film. It's deep and disturbing in parts, the use of sound effects and voices give an extra eerie atmosphere. Visually and presentation-wise, I can't say a bad word; the world feels superb.

"whiteshadows3"

The story does speak about the ills of society, equality, and exploitation just, to name a few themes. It reminds me of Animal Farm in terms of the story, and it echoes throughout the game for me. The themes are ubiquitous and pushed throughout each level. The story and world are dark, and the developers use the environment and light in; such an impressive way. Light helps provide a break in the dark world, and game mechanics revolve around it depending on the scenario.

The game is a classic platformer and puzzle game where the player, without any hints and suggestions, must figure out how to navigate each section. Super Sami Roll is the wonderfully bright platform/action game from indie developers Sonzai games. It's inspired; by a host of '80s and '90s platform games.

Super Sami Roll lands somewhere in between Marble Madness and Super Monkey Ball from a game mechanics perspective. You take the form of a ball that rolls through wonderfully rendered 3D worlds; each section has its theme from deserts to pyramids and a frozen world. I have to say the 3D worlds remind me of Super Mario 64, it's very reminiscent to me, but that's due to the 3D nature of the world full of bright colours and wonderful characters. The map reminds me of Super Mario 3, while the music and splash screens of the levels remind me of Sonic. The gameplay's a mix of Super Monkey Ball and Marble Madness. You guide your character through lush areas to finish the levels and face the boss. Pixel art helps to get across this picturesque world.

"supersamiroll1"

Each section map area has multiple levels where you will have to use your wits and skills to navigate. Game mechanics are introduced; slowly as you progress through levels to allow for some mastery before the; introduction of the next game mechanic. Game mechanics are roll, rob, jump, and grab items. The levels consist of a mix of speed runs and accuracy where you must be precise as opposed to quick; this is layered with platform pieces too. It's a healthy mix of platformer, fast action puzzler, and frantic speed runs. The difficulty can be; changed to cater for how much of a challenge you want.

"ersamiroll2"

While the game is inspired; by a host of platformers and action games, there is plenty in the game that makes it unique. With the numerous game mechanics and the use of various environments, while reminiscent of a host of classic games. There are plenty of unique elements that make it stand on its own feet. You will get annoyed at the odd camera position where your; platform is obstructed by; your camera. It does have a camera issue, like most 3D platformers. The camera angles in 3D platformers have never been perfect and; this is no exception, but this is the only minor teething issue. The soundtrack, level design and sound effects all work well; it has that chaotic sense of fun.

"supersamiroll3"

Super Sami Roll is a bright and fun platformer action game that draws from the past but is, updated for modern gaming. It's chaotic fun with lots of ups and downs. The game has a learning curve that will require you to put in the time, which means it will be challenging but, the addition of varying difficulty means you can cater it; to your needs. I loved playing something; that isn't novel in modern games while being a homage to some classic games.

The game runs at 60 FPS on the Switch. It's currently priced; at $14.99.

"Wonder

It isn't as rich or as in-depth as an RPG but it does add more features to the gameplay, the levelling up is rudimentary in that sense. All these gameplay elements are combined into a cohesive fun game.

Progressing through levels you collect upgrades, bolts that allow you to purchase and upgrade weapons. While this seems like a small feature, I loved the sheer amount of weapons and what they do. The weaponry in the game is brilliant, it adds a whole element of another edge to the gameplay. Every time a new gun or game mechanic is introduced it is done in a well-paced manner, you won't be overburdened with game controls to learn all at once.

"RACRA_Ratchet"

Visually the game does nail the very detailed cartoon look and feel. The main characters are rich in detail and you can see the detail in the fur of Ratchet. Clank is similarly detailed and the use of contrasting colours are used effectively throughout. Every character you encounter is meticulously rendered. The cartoon art style is stunning and vibrant, it gives the world a sense of life.

The voice acting is superb, it does make the characters more relatable and personable. The storytelling mixes all the critical elements serious, funny and incredulous as needed. The cinematics and visuals do give off the sense of a playable movie.

"RACRA_Flyer"

Like with previous PS5 exclusive games, Ratchet & Clank makes use of the haptic feedback in particular. Like Returnal and Astro, the haptic feedback is used for triggering primary and secondary fire types of weapons. It does work well but this was the only real use of it in the game. Vibration and sounds through the controller are used to enhance the gaming experience and cinematics.

The game allows you to choose what difficulty suits you, you can make it as tough or as easy as you want. No grinding required unless you want to.

"RACRA_RivetFixerGrab"

A day-one patch (performance mode & performance RT) will be released that will allow for dynamic 4K at 60 fps and dynamic 4K at 60 fps with ray-tracing. The game was reviewed with the quality mode playing 4k at 30 fps.

Along with the performance improvements some minor updates will be available in the day-one patch such as photo mode updates, skip cinematic option, accessibility updates and general improvement and polish.

"RACRA_Warmonger"

Ratchet & Clank melds the genres of 3rd person shooter and a platform into a fun game and rewarding game. The game is paced well with plenty of upgrades, side missions and collectables to keep you busy in-between the main story. The cinematics give the feel of a cartoon movie and the voice over is superb and it does give the story more credence as it makes it seem more believable. There are a ton of guns to get as you progress through the game and makes the game even more enjoyable. It's a well-polished fun game that is hard to put down.

The firefighter has a pickaxe and a water hose to douse the immense fires. While putting out the fire, you will save the stranded people and cats too!

Normal mode gives no prompts or assistance when trying to solve puzzles. It's all up to you to figure how to navigate each area.

Normal is for the people who want a challenge and want to figure it all out for themselves. Narrative hints and guidance makes the game much easier to navigate. I did enjoy the game, but I did feel some events were repetitive at times. At times you must backtrack for clues and to pick up items which can be tedious at times. The first time I felt controller feedback stood out which, doesn't usually happen. Even with the lack of colour - black and white in various shades, the world; is illustrated in amazing detail.

"Wonder

It's a fantastic game.

Overall: 9/10

We got our hands on a preview build of Splashteam's second game Tinykin. Tinykin is a wonderful cartoon animated 3D adventure. It does pay homage to Pikmin for sure and does give me Toy Story vibes through the look and feel. The perspective is from a small character (the size of a small toy) in a human world. You start in the living room, which seems massive, and you encounter a whole cast of creatures on your journey. What hit me straight away was the stunning cartoony graphics that were bright but in a beautiful 3D world. I was more than pleasantly surprised; it was polished from start to finish.

"tinykin1"

The preview does give you an entire level to discover the game mechanics and a feel for the game. You play as Milo, the explorer, who is in this amazing living room full of life and creatures. The game does have that mix of platform and puzzle all rolled into one. It's a joyful, bright, and wonderful experience. The game has tons of characters, and the cartoon art style gives a fantastic look and feel.

Milo has a supporting cast of Tinykins little creatures with special powers; in the preview, you encounter two types of Tinykins who can move items and blow things up.

"tinykin4"

A mix of platform, strategy and using Tinykins constitute the gameplay. It's a very fun platform game with a lot of puzzles to solve in a beautifully rendered world. I played the game using an Xbox controller, and the controls are super intuitive. The game does give directed guidelines as you uncover a new mechanic. The game is super slick and a real joy to play.

"tinykin5"

I was impressed from the start with the wonderful look and feel. The game looks and feels polished. The game mechanics were intuitive, and the art style lends itself to a beautiful looking game. This one level was a great taster, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the full game holds and how much richer it will be.

The firefighter has a pickaxe and a water hose to douse the immense fires. While putting out the fire, you will save the stranded people and cats too!

It's tonnes of fun, plays fantastic and looks; awesome.

Overall: 8/10
Developer: Elden Pixels

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5 (Reviewed), Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

Genre: Adventure

Publisher: Elden Pixels, Clear River Games

Alwa's Legacy is a modern update of the classic dungeon crawler games of the 90s. It's a mix of action, platformer, puzzles and tonnes of action too. It would fall into the Metroidvanias genre, a mixture of Metroid and Castlevania. You can expect a beautifully pixelated world that you must explore to uncover every secret and become the best version of yourself. It does have a classic retro feel too.

"alwaslegacy1"

First impressions of the game were a bright and mystical world full of secrets. I loved the interconnectivity of the world and how there are multiple ways to access different; areas in a deep rich map.

"alwaslegacy2"

Alwa's Legacy gets a lot of things right from gameplay, visuals, sound, level design, and just that it's a fun game. I enjoyed the variety between action, platform and puzzle mechanics in the game. I never got bored; the story, while nothing helps push forward your existence in the world. World and level design are superb the world; consists of a maze of interconnected dungeons with new creatures in new areas of the world.

Ravengirl's existence is a difficult predicament, and you see the world from her eyes.

"whiteshadows2"

White Shadows is just an astonishingly beautiful game; from the first scene to the final scene, the mix of cinematic, monochrome and steampunk is present throughout. It somehow manages to combine all these styles into a super slick game. Superb use of lighting, sound and controller feedback makes the game even more immersive.

"Wonder

It's an enjoyable puzzle/platformer.

Overall: 7.5/10
Developer: Monokel

Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X (Reviewed)|S

Genre: Action, Adventure

Publisher: Thunderful Publishing, Mixtvision

White Shadows is a puzzle-platformer made by indie developer Monokel.

"Wonder

Normal mode gives no prompts or assistance when trying to solve puzzles. It's all up to you to figure how to navigate each area. The guided mode provides an indicator that will mark the next puzzle to solve in the form of a line that directs you. You can change the mode type in-game if you get stuck or if you want more of a challenge. Normal is for the people who want a challenge and want to figure it all out for themselves. Narrative hints and guidance makes the game much easier to navigate. I did enjoy the game, but I did feel some events were repetitive at times. At times you must backtrack for clues and to pick up items which can be tedious at times.

"Wonder
