This week see the return to the Baltimore universe with the long-awaited release of Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens from Dark Horse comics. The series is co-written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden, with art by Bridgit Connell, colours by Michelle Madsen, and covers by Hugo Award-winning illustrator Abigail Larson. We got a chance to sit down with the author Christopher Golden to talk about Baltimore. Christopher Golden has written a wide range of novels and comics, some of these include Angel, Baltimore, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Hellboy just to name a few.

Hi Christopher we are so excited to have you here with us today, we have been fans of your work for a very long time. We are so delighted that you are here to talk with us.

CG: Thanks so much!

You have been part of the Baltimore universe right from the beginning, how does it feel to be still creating in the Baltimore universe?

CG: It’s fantastic. When Mike and I created Baltimore in the novel Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire, we had some thoughts about there being a sequel at some point. But we never dreamed that it would grow to be this enormous mythology that goes back to the beginning of time, and the idea that it would become its own comic book universe never occurred to us. But then Joe Golem happened, and over time it grew organically into this much larger thing. Ideas and characters kept presenting themselves, and now it’s something I spend so much time thinking about, and I just want to keep exploring. And who could be anything but thrilled with the artists we’ve collaborated with while creating the Outerverse? Ben Stenbeck, Patric Reynolds, Peter Bergting, and Bridgit Connell. What a rogues’ gallery that is!

You have been working with Mike Mignola for quite a long time, what's it like working with Mike Mignola?

CG: As of this year, Mike and I have been working together for a quarter century, which is insane. We started way back when I persuaded him to let me write the first Hellboy novel, The Lost Army, which came out in 1997. I’d like to think we’ve been positive influences on one another. We share a certain frame of reference and a lot of similar interests, but our approaches have always been very different. My mind is always searching for explanations for things, trying to force order onto a story, and Mike’s much more about the weirdness and the beauty and not so much about explanation. Working with him has always inspired me by giving me the freedom to NOT explain something, to let the weird and beautiful just be weird and beautiful.

"ladybaltimore_twq1_1"

What can you tell us about the first issue of Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens?

CG: Thirteen years ago, Sofia Baltimore took part in a battle that decided the fate of the world. Her husband—her closest friend, Lord Baltimore—died during that battle. The great evil of the Red King was destroyed, but that didn’t drive all evil from the world. There are still monsters, there’s still darkness. It took time to begin to gather but now, as World War II begins and the Nazis ally themselves with a congregation of witches called the Hexenkorps, Lady Baltimore has gathered a small group of her own allies to combat the insidious evil and the monsters popping up around Europe. In the first issue, she encounters an old ally, Judge Rigo, who tells her that stories abound about Baltimore’s ghost appearing in various places. He needs her help in his own work against the Nazis, and if she’ll help him, he’ll help her get to the bottom of the stories of Baltimore’s wandering ghost. Of course, that’s just the first step in a dark, epic story of war, evil, love, and resurrection—but not the way you might think.

When you and Mike Mignola are writing together how does that work? Do you write the plot together? Do you write the script together?

CG: It really differs from project to project. Most of our work together is done on the phone. Sometimes Mike has a lot of plot elements in his head and we talk them out, or he’ll write down ideas. Sometimes I’ve dreamt up most of a story already. Either way, we hash it out, and then I’ll put flesh on the bones and run it all by him for his take on it all. The best part is that many of these characters and stories are big, sometimes epic, and Mike always has the ability to pull out the essence of a thing, to carve off the fat, whether in the plot or in the dialogue. When I started as a comics writer, I would overexplain everything, and Mike has done his best to cure me of that.

"ladybaltimore_twq1_2"

The Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens comic includes the talent of Bridgit Connell, Michelle Madsen and Abigail Larson. How did they join the Lady Baltimore comic and what has it been like working with them?

CG: Michelle has been the colorist on most of the previous Outerverse comics, and she’s fantastic. I wouldn’t want it any other way. With Bridgit—Katii and I had a long, ongoing email chain and various phone calls as we built a list of potential artists for this book, searching for someone who could bring the right combination of action and movement, who could do the kinds of backgrounds and visual world-building these stories need, and who could give life to the characters’ faces the way we wanted. We winnowed that list down to two or three people and then presented them to Mike. Katii and I had Bridgit as our first choice, but I don’t think we told Mike that. He had met Bridgit before, and loved her work. What I’ve found, working with Mike, is that he has a great eye for artists who are already really good but who have it in them to really level up, and he saw that in Bridgit…and boy, was he right. With Abigail, that was a Katii and Mike decision, but I’m so glad they made it. Abigail’s covers give Lady Baltimore a gorgeous, distinctive style that sets the series apart.

Some of our readers maybe not be familiar with the Baltimore novel and the comic series, is Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #1 new reader-friendly?

CG: Absolutely. My hope is that new readers will pick up Lady Baltimore #1 and, though they shouldn’t need to read Baltimore to understand it, they’ll be intrigued enough to go back to the beginning. Fortunately, the whole Baltimore story is available in two gorgeous, affordable omnibuses—check ’em out!

"ladybatlimore_twq1_3"

Any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

CG: Just a thanks in advance to readers who are willing to give Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #1 a shot. It’s a wild ride with a new hero I hope you’ll love as much as we do. Sofia is her own woman, with her own mission, and I can’t wait for people to see where it takes her!

We would like to say a big thank you to Christopher for taking the time to talk with us, Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #1 is out this week from Dark Horse comics.

A group of mercenaries destined to save the World... eventually. Their paths align in the swamp town of Stilben, as they each arrive to either investigate the Curse, earn some coin or find their own feet as adventurers. Together they come across a common enemy that threatens not only the vulnerable in this village, but also seem to be behind this ‘curse’. And so begins the story of the legendary party of mercenaries, known as Vox Machina! As Dark Horse Comics brings the first Dungeons & Dragons campaign from the cast of Critical Role into the comic book universe!

This still may be a cliché market, but the popularity of Dungeons & Dragons has resurfaced once again in the last decade. This could be linked to several actors coming forward saying that they either have played or are still playing the iconic Tabletop game. With celebrities such as Matthew Lillard, Pendleton Ward, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Vin Diesel, Joe Manganiello and Will Wheaton naming just a few. The cast of Critical Role are proudly in and amongst those celebrities, as a group of Voice Actors gather together each Thursday night to play the game, led by their Dungeon Master: Matthew Mercer (Levi Ackerman in Attack On Titan). Following a short time of airing the games over on the Geek & Sundry channel, the group launched their own Twitch and YouTube channels in 2018 under the name Critical Role. This volume follows the beginning of their first campaign, with the name - Vox Machina. By converting the story they role played out each week, into a comic book format.

"criticalrole_vmovol1_1"

Throughout this volume, we meet six individuals of various races that will soon come together under one very unique party of adventurers. We begin with the twin half Elfs - Vax and Vex, who even throughout the entirety of this volume, is difficult to pinpoint their personalities completely. An intriguing pair, that although are regarded as High Born due to their father, are otherwise treated as dirt due to their Human mother. They have finished their schooling and are now on their own, trying to make a name for themselves and put their schooling to work to turn some coin. Next we have the Gnome Bard - Scanlan Shorthalt and his strong-armed, simple minded friend - Grog; a Goliath Barbarian. Next is another half Elven woman, named Keyleth, who is trained as a Druid and can cast a self transformation spell - to change into an animal, mostly for battle. Last but not least, we have a sorcerer and scholar in Tiberius Stormwind. A true Dragonborn, his appearance combines the best attributes of both dragons and humanoids. Making him a very striking character to look at and one you are sure not to forget. Altogether they each have their own distinct personalities, goals, values and life experiences, so I’m interested to see how exactly this party is going to develop enough to save the World.

So far in this retelling of the groups’ origin, we have seen some fighting amongst the soon to be party members. As each of them gets involved in amongst the mysterious circumstances surrounding the ‘curse’ of Stilben. With ambushes, assassination attempts, an abduction and arcane magic happening with each turn of the page, this series is far from short when it comes to action. It is certainly a page turner, and I audibly let out a massive sigh when I came to the final page. There is sure to be much more excitement and adventure to be had in Volume 2.

"criticalrole_vmovol1_2"

The plot, story direction and character designs all came from the minds of the cast of Critical Role, with DM Matt Mercer also involved in the writing for this volume, alongside Matthew Colville. We also have Olivia Samson as the official artist for both Volume 1 and 2 of the Vox Machina comic series. The news broke in 2017, that the Vox Machina campaign was to be released as a comic, in partnership with Dark Horse Comics, and here we are today with the complete Volume 1 and single issues of Volume 2 already available. You can buy the issues individually right now through their website, or as this complete volume.

Until Volume 2, I highly advise checking out the Critical Role live streams for Campaign 2 with The Mighty Nein, or catch up on all their old episodes starting with the Vox Machina campaign over on their YouTube channel in the link below.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpXBGqwsBkpvcYjsJBQ7LEQ

Hope you all stay safe in the meantime fellow Critters’, and like Matt Mercer says, “Is it Thursday yet?”

Overall: 9/10

Written By: Naru Narumi

Artist: Naru Narumi

Cover Artist: Naru Narumi

Translator: Ayumi Kato Bylstone

Published By: Dark Horse Comics

Ms. Koizumi simply loves indulging in a bowl of Ramen, whether it be home-made, shop bought, sitting down in a restaurant or a quick stop at a street stall. This stunning teenage noodle connoisseur has just enrolled at a new high school and has grabbed the attention of fellow classmate Yu, who wants to get to know the new transfer student better. Constantly ‘bumping’ into Yu on the way to her next Ramen fix, they begin to spend a short time together over a meal. With only the topic of Ramen and the education of how wonderful this meal is, along with its vast varieties in construction, presentation and ingredients, Ms Koizumi slowly begins to guide her classmates in Japans’ most famous dish.

There are many manga series that have entered around Japanese food, probably the most memorable would be Food Wars (Shokugeki no Soma) from its established multi season anime series and with over 30 manga volumes. Where that series focussed more on the young chefs honing their skills, Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles is all about the dish! Highlighting the many varieties of Ramen in Japan, how they are constructed and the appreciation one should have for them. The author has blended two of Japans’ most renowned attributes - Ramen and Manga, together in order to showcase just a fraction of the countries' culture when it comes to its’ national dish.

"mskoizumilovesramenvol1_1"

The storyline and characters seem to take a second seat in this series, and perhaps that is the best way forward in order to try and focus solely on the food. Ms. Koizumi is our protagonist, as well as being a freshly transferred high school student who keeps to herself, she only tends to talk as long as it involves Ramen. She is quickly noticed by Yu, a bubbly young girl who wants the attention and friendship of Ms. Koizumi. This high spirited individual is determined to get to know her new class mate, and even resorts to stalking her in order to create an opportunity for the two to talk. Although it never seems to go entirely to plan, Yu reaches a breakthrough later on in this volume! Yu’s fellow classmates Misa and Takahashi also end up spending time with Koizumi, as well as the trio learning some valuable Ramen appreciation from their new transfer student.

The balance between the storyline, character introduction and development is fairly well balanced - just like a good Ramen broth. You learn so much information on the many Ramen dishes there are, as well as how in some restaurants you buy a ticket to get your food, instead of paying a waiter at the end of the meal. Also there are some chains that ask you to fill out a form, so they can make your Ramen order specifically to your taste, instead of everyone getting the same dish. The high school characters are not entirely interesting, but they do help to break up the mountain of Ramen facts that Koizumi spouts. You have Koizumi who seems to be quite cultured and has a great pallet for food, but we don’t know yet where her love for Ramen developed from or the reason as to why she transferred schools. Yu is energetic and just loves getting to know people - hence her interest in the quiet Koizumi. Misa is a popular girl, but due to her reputation she finds it very difficult to hold onto a boyfriend. Then we have Takahashi, who is a Class Rep. Tall, responsible, wears glasses, the usual character design we see for a Class Rep in nearly all anime/manga. As to what Volume 2 will bring, I honestly don't know. As this could have worked as a one shot, but instead has been developed into a franchise.

"mskoizumilovesramenvol1_2"

The illustrations are clean cut, very distinguishable and overall the lettering is easy to read, you can also clearly tell the pitch and tone each character uses by the style the speech bubble is drawn in. This manga was created, written and illustrated by Naru Narumi. She has also written and illustrated Tokyo Innocent and Zettai Joó Sei.

Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles first began as a manga in 2013, and is still ongoing today with 8 volumes out in Japan. Dark Horse Comics will be releasing the second volume in English in 2020. This manga series was later picked up as a TV Drama in 2015 and ran for 6 episodes on Fuji TV. Then just last year, this manga was developed into a 12 episode anime by Studio Gokumi (The Ambition Of Oda Nobuna) and AXsiZ (Pandora In The Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn), which became licensed by Crunchyroll. So while you wait for the next volume to come out, why not check out the TV Drama and Anime to curb your appetite.

Overall: 7.5 /10

Written By: Tsukasa Fushimi

Artist: rin

Published By: Dark Horse Comics

After being subsequently shut down by his shut in little step-sister Sagiri, Masamune resides himself to simply wanting to be her older brother, as well as help her escape her life as a hikikomori. So he begins to work on his new dream, to turn the manuscript he wrote in tribute to his sister, made into an anime! A lot more complicated than it sounds, as he has no clue on how to write a proposal for it. Fortunately the lolita dressing, popular light novelist Elf Yamada needs saving and is willing to do "anything" in return.

"eromangasenseivol3_1"

I'm back again with the latest Volume of Eromanga Sensei from Dark Horse Comics. In the last volume, Masamune wrote a manuscript depicting his sister as the heroine and more or less declaring his love for her. After being rejected, he decides to focus on just playing the role of the older brother. He turns the situation around and finds inspiration in the manuscript. If he can succeed in getting it made into an anime, he will get a new TV for the living room, enticing his little sister out of her room in order to watch the anime of their light novel together. Thus getting her further out into the real world again. A simple dream to speak of, but it's a long road ahead in order to make it a reality. This series has yet again given us another glimpse into the life of a light novelist and the industry from a writer’s point of view. From deadlines to procrastination, a difference in work ethics, the pressure of agents and trying to get the go ahead on a new series idea from your editor. All the while trying to keep a normal life and not become a total recluse from society.

Sagiri actually makes some good character development in this issue as she interacts with two people, other than her brother. Although she only meets with Elf through a computer screen, the two really do hit it off. This happens mostly because of Elfs’ personality, which just seems to draw people in unbeknownst to them. The other person I will leave as a surprise, as it certainly caught me off guard how that interaction ended. And thus once again we get to see Sagiri’s more devilish nature, which takes everyone aback, especially her new friends. Seriously the last chapter in this volume is a doozy, but I certainly could not spoil that for you!

"eromangasenseivol3_2"

We are getting closer and closer to Sagiri actually interacting with other humans outside of a screen! It’s progress that’s for sure. It’ll be interesting to see what develops next in Volume 4. Now at the minute I can not find a release date for Volume 4, but I can only guess it would be next year. Just keep checking the Dark Horse Comics website every couple of weeks for any updates.

Eromanga Sensei began as a light novel series back in 2013, by Tsukasa Fushimi who also pens the manga series Oreimo. Dark Horse Comics is releasing the manga in English, with just the first three volumes out thus far. For those of you who can’t wait to see what happens, Eromanga Sensei was also adapted into a 12 episode anime series back in 2017 by A-1 Pictures. Six, is a four issue mini series that takes place before the show, following a girl called Francine, who has uncontrolled visions of the future. It follows Francine from the time her powers emerged, to her parents abusing her gift and then her time in Hawkins Laboratory. What secrets do we uncover about the facility and Dr. Brenner’s experiments.

"strangerthings_six1"

Now I am just going to do an overall review of this mini series, as I just read it all at once. So I have only just finished watching Stranger Things in the last week, so it’s all still fairly fresh in my mind. Throughout the show, I have always wondered who the other children in Hawkins Laboratory were if El’s number was Eleven. Well this mini series introduces us to a few more, seeing as we already met Eight in Season Two. These comics are from Francine's (Six) point of view, how she struggled against her parents after her powers were revealed, to being welcomed into a place that wanted to protect her and help guide her to control her gift. Within a matter of months, Francine meets her boyfriend once more but under very different circumstances. With more children introduced, a glimpse into their pasts and an introduction to their powers, it’s a shame this was only a four issue series.

"strangerthings_six2"

We don’t know anything about Francine’s life prior to her mother discovering her gift. From there on though she was pressured into using her powers to predict lottery numbers, in order for her parents to collect the winnings. She found some solace however in the boy next door, fleeing to his house each time she needed an escape from the immense pressure she had at home. Whilst in the Hawkins Laboratory they cross paths again. With plenty to discuss, mostly the vast betrayal Francine feels. There are also two other children introduced to us. 9 and 9.5, a set of twins who have lived in the facility since they were very young. After a number of months living in the lab, Francine experiences a number of visions of a future filled with monsters and violence. The events echo what we see in the TV series. As well as knowing a life outside these walls, Francine sees her time here as imprisonment and wants to escape, as well as freeing the children that are there with her, who day in and day out are put through strict schedules and dangerous tests.

"strangerthings_six3"

This is a great insight into the events that lead up to the show, which also connects with an event that involves Elevens’ mother storming the Lab. The main aspect that I am enjoying so much, is that we actually get to see a few of the other children, as well as a glimpse of their powers. I would love to see if some of the children we meet turn up again, perhaps in another story arc release or in Season 4. As there is still so much that could be adapted from these unexplored storylines.

So for those of you that haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet with this Netflix show, Stranger Things is a science fiction show set in a small town in 1980’s America. It follows the lives of four young boys who hold weekly Dungeons and Dragons sessions. Little do they know there is a secret government facility in their town, which exploits and develops special mental abilities in select children. Through their tests, they have opened the gate to a world known as the Upside Down. A gate that has now given access to our World, where demonic creatures can now escape into. One such child from this facility makes her escape, only to come across the four boys who do their best to help her & keep her safe. A series not for the squeamish or faint hearted, but well worth a watch if you love these comics.

"strangerthings_six4"

You can either buy these four issues separately, with Issue 4 out shortly on August 28th, or you could own them collectively on November 26th in the Stranger Things Volume 2: Six TPB from Dark Horse Comics.

Overall: 8/10
Written By: Liz Marsham

Artist: Tara Nicole Whitaker

Lettering By: Chris Dickey

Cover artist: Tara Nicole Whitaker

Published By: Dark Horse Comics

Ariel is the youngest Princess in the Kingdom, known for her curious nature and imaginative stories. Whilst out swimming with her sisters, Ariel accidentally drops her sister Aquatas’ bracelet into a deep cave. A cave rumored to be the home of a dangerous creature! Ariel risks her life to return Aquatas’ precious bracelet, despite her sisters’ warnings. However is she really in danger and is there any truth to the terrifying rumors?

Disney’s The Little Mermaid is one of my all time favourite childhood films, so to revisit her world has been very touching. Not only seeing some familiar surroundings but also seeing Ariel as a little mer-girl. Whilst outside the castle walls with her older sisters’, Ariel begins telling them tall tales of her unbelievable encounters and adventures. Whilst being scolded for her imaginative lies, Ariel knocks one of her sisters’ beloved bracelets into a dark cave. A cave that is renowned for being the home to a scary monster. Not scared by her sister’s warnings, Ariel wants to retrieve what she has lost at all costs. No matter the danger, our young mermaid sneaks out one night and swims to the cave’s entrance. And that is where the story really gets going!

Now we never really saw much of Ariel’s sisters in the movies, this issue however lets us see more of them, as well as some of their personalities. Ariel is the youngest amongst her siblings and even as a young child she was very out-going & full of wonder. She is also one who does not care about rules or believes everything she hears as the absolute fact! She must always investigate it for herself and discover the truth. You can see this for yourself in this issue as she dives into the monster’s home alone.

This is a great comic to pick up for young readers, but even as an adult I really did enjoy it. The illustrations are cute and have plenty of detail. It has its own style, one that is far different from the films and cartoon series (do many of you remember watching the cartoon?). The illustration designs are unique, very innocent looking and almost simplistic. Ideal for the younger readers and is a great comic to get them started on their lifetime journey of buying comics!

With the illustrations and cover art by Tara Nicole Whitaker, and the story by Liz Marsham. Liz has also written for another well known franchise - The Incredibles. The famous superhero family from Disney and PIXAR, in their comic The Incredibles 2: Heroes At Home.

Once again, this issue of Disney Princess: Ariel And The Sea Wolf is certainly worth picking up, for existing fans and new readers, both young and old. He is not the only talented member in his family, as his younger sister Sagiri is the much acclaimed and sought after illustrator- Eromanga Sensei. Izumi has some serious competition when it comes to book sales and sheer talent, in the form of the charming lolitha dressed author - Elf Yamada. Unfortunately she has just moved in next door, into the much rumored haunted house. Will Izumi take this chance to either spy on his competition or find inspiration?

As we established in the first volume, little sister Sagiri is what is known as a hikikomori in Japan. To everyone else, it means she is a shut in. Someone who doesn’t leave the house or their room, refusing to attend school or social gatherings. With all of her spare time however, Sagiri has practised her art and has become an accomplished manga artist, all whilst keeping her identity a secret and going under the pen name Eromanga Sensei. This does mean though that she has not attended school in some time, which has provoked her fellow classmate Megumi to make it her mission to see her return - no matter what it takes.

"Eromangasenseivolume21"

Izumi on the other hand has hit a bit of a slump when it comes to his writing. However when the opportunity arises when a well accomplished author movies in next door, Izumi see’s it as a chance to learn from the best. In their time together he soon realises their work ethics are entirely different. This is such a nice in depth look into how different authors can be, even if they both write the same genre, each have their own approach to their work. Some see it as a full time job, other’s as a hobby, while some don’t even see it as work, but more of an artform. Refusing to put pen to paper until they are sure what they are writing is worth publishing.

Not only is Izumi a tad stressed about his manuscript ideas being shot down by his manager, he is also now contending against Elf Yamada for the opportunity to have Eromanga Sensei work on their next series. Obviously since learning the true identity of his illustrator, Izumi does not want to lose his only chance of having a bond with his little sister. So he becomes determined to beat Elf Yamada, by initiating a writing contest with Eromanga Sensei as the prize. A bold but stupid move on his behalf, you’ll just have to pick up this Volume to find out if it all pays off in the end. Also to see his little sister’s reaction to his absurd idea.

"Eromangasenseivolume22"

This manga series is insightful in some ways as we do get to see what it’s like to be a teenage author, whose work is being published. However they did have to add in the extra element that was his little sister and how she has become secluded from reality. I believe they did this for the sole purpose it would appeal to more readers, as they probably didn’t believe the story would have lasted long without some cute girls. I can see why, the plot would be quite boring without Sagiri involved. As to what is to come in Volume 3, I’m not sure but my guess is another rival artist or another author will make an appearance. Who knows, Izumi may get another neighbour.

Eromanga Sensei began as a light novel series back in 2013, by Tsukasa Fushimi who also pens the manga series as well as Oreimo. With the Light Novel series still on going with 11 volumes at present, this manga series began publishing several months later in 2014 with 8 volumes currently available in Japan. At the moment there are two available in English, with more coming this year from Dark Horse Comics. For those of you who can’t wait to see what happens, Eromanga Sensei was also adapted into a 12 episode anime series back in 2017 by A-1 Pictures. Which is rumored to be out this September on BluRay, but can you guess what distribution company will be releasing it? Comment below with your guesses.

Eromanga Sensei Volume 3 will be out this coming July from Dark Horse Comics.

Overall: 7/10
Written By: Lynn Okamoto

Artist: Lynn Okamoto

Translation: Michael Gombos

English Adaptation: Megan Walker

Lettering: Steve Dutro

Published By: Dark Horse Comics

Humanity is evolving, with some born with horns on top of their heads and psychic powers beyond imagining. Feared for the power they possess, they are either disposed off or taken inside secret research facilities, in order to both protect the public, without them knowing of any such threat. Lucy is one such evolved being, known as a Diclonius, she has been trapped with the research facility all her life, constantly experimented on. Until one day, she escapes.

Elfen Lied has been around for almost 17 years, ever since the manga first debuted back in 2002. Known for being an incredible science fiction horror, it’s anime adaption was beyond bloody and filled with gore. This is my first time however reading its’ manga form. This Omnibus volume, contains the first three volumes of the manga, making it a nice start to your collection and far easier to find now that it’s being republished.

"elfenliedvol1_1"

Lucy is seen as a monster in the series from the human perspective, with uncontrollable psychic powers that can not be easily manipulated. Upon Lucy’s initial escape from the facility, she suffers a head trauma resulting in the emergence of her split personality known as Nyu. Portrayed as an innocent young girl with amnesia, her other self is a ruthless killer. Taken in by the main male protagonist, Kouta, who is a freshman at college and has just moved into town on the day he meets Nyu. Having experienced his own tragedy as a kid, he seems to have blocked out the majority of which or indeed remembers it quite differently from his female cousin Yuka. More of this mystery is slowly revealed as the manga progresses. Which is sure to intertwine with Lucy’s at some point.

Now this manga, and certainly that of the anime, is not for the faint hearted. Filled with terrors, beheadings and butchering limbs, I am surprised it is not in the 18+ age bracket. It is however a great read from start to finish. Now I am aware there are some deviations between the anime and the manga, so as of yet everything still looks to be the same. So it will be interesting to see what Volume 2 of the Omnibus has in store.

Elfen Lied was created by Lynn Okamoto, the same author behind Brynhildr In The Darkness. Elfen Lied debuted in Weekly Young Jump back in 2002 and was published as a total of 12 single manga volumes. Is they stay going with a total of 3 volumes in each Omnibus edition, Dark Horse Comics will have the entirety of Elfen Lied comprised into four nicely complied volumes. Following the mangas’ growing success, it wasn’t too long before it was adapted into an anime, just two years later by the animation studio known as Arms, which later adapted Okamoto's other manga series I mentioned above.

"elfenliedvol1_2"

The art style used in this series reminds me a bit of that used in Neon Genesis Evangelion, whilst the shocked looks and scenes of terror make me think of Junji Ito’s work. There are various styles used throughout the volume, from the terrified looks of the unfortunate guard, to the monstrous first look at Lucy, shortly followed by the cute and very innocent look of Yuka. To me, the art style quickly changes with the emotions of each character, allowing us to see the sheer terror they are experiencing even more profoundly following the once angelic look they showed just moments before.

This series is best enjoyed by a slightly older audience who enjoy their horror and science fiction, but this is definitely a strong series to add to your collection. Volume 2 of the Omnibus will be hitting stores this September.

Overall: 9/10

Fifteen-year-old Masamune Izumi is in his first year of high school, but his work schedule is much more hectic than that of his classmates. Masamune is also an accomplished and published author of light novels. Within the world of publishing, the illustrations are just as important as the manuscript. However Masamune has never met the illustrator of his novels ‘Eromanga Sensei’, as all their contact has been through their manager. All the while, Masamune is juggling both his career and education, whilst also maintaining a home. He also cares for his little sister, who has shut herself in her room for the last year, becoming a complete hikikomori. After watching just one drawing livestream, Masamune’s life is going to become a lot more interesting!

This interesting story introduces us to Masamune, who won a light novel writers award whilst in junior high. Now he is an accomplished and published author, even though he has just started high school. With the advancement of modern technology, Masamune is capable of finding out what his readers think of his work. As well as the positive reviews, Masamune also gets some harsh criticism, even from his illustrator. This ultimately ends in a huge discovery for him that is bound to change the relationships in his household. This series seems to focus on how the publishing industry works, or at the very least gives us a sneak peek into the lives of the author and illustrators. It will be quite interesting to see in what direction volume two goes, regarding both the characters and how much more insight into the publishing industry we are given.

Masamune has some massive shoes to fill in his household, as from what I understand after reading this volume, his parents aren’t actually around anymore. It is unclear if they are deceased or have simply been working abroad. It is just Masamune and his little sister Sagiri living in the house, however it is down to Masamune to do all the chores as Sagiri has become a complete shut in (hikikomori). Sagiri has not emerged from her room for the past twelve months, and that includes talking to her brother. She has also become isolated from society and even stopped attending school. The reasons for this have yet to be made clear, but what has Sagiri been doing all these months to pass time? It’s probably obvious to the readers by now, but not to her own brother!

Eromanga Sensei is a romantic comedy, and was first published as a light novel; yup this is a series about a light novel author, being written by a light novelist! It’s Inception people! Anyway, it has been ongoing since 2013 with ten volumes out so far by author Tsukasa Fushimi, the same author of Oreimo. The manga adaptation began in 2014 and currently has seven volumes out. These are published in English by Dark Horse Comics.

Eromanga Sensei Volume 1 is available to buy now both online and in your local manga carrying bookstore. It is worth picking up this series now and supporting the manga publishing industry.

YOUTH follows the turbulent lives of two teenage boys that run away from their small minded town in hopes of making it to California. Frank and River, two queer teens that fall for one another leave their troubled homes behind and drive untl they run out of gas. They soon come across other misfit teens, who welcome them into their group. The fun continues for this new gang of friends, as raging hormones are mixed with liquor and drugs. Soon tempers are flying and before they know it, they are being pursued by the cops. The madness continues, just when they think they have escaped with their lives - a cosmic blast changes these teens' lives forever!

Well every good superhero story has to start somewhere, usually the individuals are formed out of some kind of tragedy and that is exactly what has happened to this group of misfits. Speaking of, there are many similarities between this story and that of the UK sitcom Misfits. Both groups of wayward teens were struck with unusual powers, neither of which knew how best to use them and instead went instead for personal gain. In the later half of this volume, we see the horrifying consequences when one such superpowered individual gets hammered and starts throwing punches at civilians.

This series is just filled with countless twists and turns, there is never a calm moment. Its as though you got the cast of the TV show Misfits and put them in charge of establishing the X-Men - but first they have to fund it all through any means necessary. These teens are more like anti-heroes and are much more akin to the likes of Deadpool's personality. Look out for yourself and only those in your immediate circle. This is far from the end of YOUTH, as there is already a Season Two being published, which I will also be reviewing.

YOUTH was co created by author Curt Pires and illustrator Alex Diotto. Curt has had a very successful career as of late, as five out of his eight creator owned properties are now in development for TV and film, including YOUTH which has been licensed for Amazon Prime Video. The artwork is quite striking in a way that kind of reminds me of the rough sketches that are used for a storyboard during filming so everyone has an idea of how it will be shot. Some of the panels are quite crude at times, especially when it comes to facial expressions but it still manages to get the point & emotions across to the reader. This series doesn't need to rely on pretty drawings and perfect outlines, the story is more than enough to carry this through. Where it excels is in the scenarios it depicts, the chaos, car chases, drug filled parties and the horny teens making out. It is honestly a wild ride for a comic and its no surprise that it has been picked up for a live action series.

"youthvol1_2"

YOUTH is a modern coming of age series that follows a bunch of misfit teens that have been forgotten both by society and their families. We follow their lives as they go from parties, to drugs, alcohol and car chases. Only for them to be struck down by a cosmic power that totals their van but leaves them with unimaginable powers.

YOUTH Volume 1 is available to buy in physical print from Dark Horse Comics and online through comiXology.
