It plays along the line of a modern Assassin's Creed game but with a heavy emphasis on puzzles. It's nowhere near a straight Assassin's Creed clone and does diverge away from AC. I was expecting something similar to AC but was pleasantly surprised.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising comes to life with a cartoon style of graphics, it's bright and wonderful, but quickly turns dark and foreboding. It alternates between both quite a bit. The stage is the age of The Greek Gods, and the game uses a voiceover of two Gods: Zeus and Prometheus to tell the tale of Fenyx and the protagonist's fight against Typhoon (deadliest Titan in Greek mythology). While there are elements of the parkour in Fenyx Rising a whole host of extra features make the gameplay vastly different from AC. This is mainly due to the sheer amount of puzzle sections on the game.

"immortlasfenyxrising1"

First off Fenyx possesses a host of powers and acquires extra "Godly" powers like flight (Wings of Daidalos) just to name one. You have the ability to run, fight, mount stead or fly through this open world that is full of mythological beasts (Cyclops, Minotaur and Medusa). Fenyx emphasises these gameplay elements throughout and there is a ton of variety. I think Fenyx comes into its own after about 3-4 hours into the game where you have levelled up sufficiently and have the broad variety of weapons and special powers to take on the vaults (dungeons). Puzzles come in the form of speed run challenges, archery puzzles and platforming puzzles too. This variety keeps you engaged. As this is an action RPG the fighting mechanics are solid and a decent levelling up system makes you do side missions too. The fighting is fun and you can chain huge combos whilst using additional God powers too.

"immortalsfenyxrising2"

The voice acting, visuals and level design are superb. The narration of Zeus and Prometheus is somewhat of a bad comedy duo with some Dad jokes thrown in. It's not amazingly funny but I can see the intent to lighten and narrate throughout the game. The narrative does succeed and paints a more vibrant picture of the world and mythology. The Greek mythology theme permeates the whole game and design and adds an air of authenticity to the game.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X (I assume) support a quality mode 30 fps at 4K native and a performance mode that supports 60 fps dynamic 4K.

"immortlasfenyxrising3"

The game plays phenomenally well once you get used to the controls and all the variety of specials you will acquire. There is a huge amount of puzzles, enemies and diversion in the world to keep you coming back. The powering up system is rich enough without being complex, it's a fun game that you will lose hours in. It's a surprising mix of puzzles merged to an open-world RPG. I have put in a lot of hours and keep coming back to the game.

Overall: 8/10

Demon's Souls is the next-generation version and reboot built from the ground up of the PS3 classic. I'm just putting this out there, I haven't played the PS3 version, it's one of the PS consoles I didn't get. Demon's Souls is brand new to me. I don't have any nostalgic baggage of playing the game though it's considered a classic. I have played Bloodbourne though I will be my reference point for aspects of my game review. Demon's Souls is a third-person action RPG that is considered one of the hardest games.

"demons_

For those familiar with the PS3 version, this game looks like a beautifully updated version of the PS3 game. I usually quickly skip through the character creation introduction, but I did spend time on it and marvelled at the rendering of the faces. The game has several classes that you can create your custom character from - Knight, Thief, Magician, and Wanderer to name a few. Gameplay involves navigating quite a linear path to kill a host of monsters. An increasing presence of demons has plagued the world and must be stopped. The game is unforgiving in many ways, while the controls are simple, the player is required to use their endurance effectively to strategically kill enemies while ensuring you don't die. An all-out attack approach in Demon's Souls will lead to many deaths where entire sections of the game must be replayed. You will die over and over.

"demons_souls_2"

It's slick and polished from the very first frame of the game through its entirety. Every creature, beast and monster you meet throughout the game looks stunning. Boss enemies (some are huge) rendered in meticulous detail, each gruesome and gory detail is brought to life. The environments vary from a mixture of ruined castles, keeps, moats, fields and decaying buildings. The use of light and shading lends itself another sense of the unknown to the player. Enemies are hiding in the shadows and creep up on you as you progress through each level. It has the right mix of difficulty, level progression, levelling up mixed in with a beautiful environment and sound to boot. It has the feel of a game that has been lovingly built up and each aspect of the gameplay while infuriating (when you die) make Demon's Souls a fantastic journey.

Demon Souls looks amazing in 4K, the game supports 4K 30fps in cinematic mode and 1440p upscaled to 4K at 60fps (dynamic 4k). Demon's Souls has both PVP and Co-op modes available that are unlocked early in the game. You can play with friends or other Souls players.

"demons_souls_3"

Demon's Souls is the best release title for the PS5. It looks amazing and plays just as well. While some players will find the game very difficult, it requires time and dedication to get to most of this game. It's not a lie, it's a challenge but tons of fun. There is a huge emphasis on strategy, levelling up and being wary of enemies. The bosses are fantastic, and they get tougher as you progress the game. You will die a lot, but you just need to persist. Demon's Souls is exciting, tough but it is a fantastic must own launch title. Demon's Souls the launch title to beat all launch titles

Thematically Watch Dogs is based around the effects of technology in this future dystopian world of London. Ubisoft has done a stunning job in recreating London. The level of detail and attention to detail makes it feel like London. I was instantly impressed by the environment and the sheer amount of madness in this game.

"watchdogslegion_1"

Watch Dogs is primarily a sand-boxed game where you can approach missions in a few ways: hacking, all-out attack and stealth. Hacking is the core element of this game that differentiates it to its peers. Hacking takes two forms: stealthy or offensive. Hacking in stealth mode allows you to complete missions with minimal casualties. Hacking allows for chaotic mayhem and destruction as you use your drones and turrets against enemies. You can take the approach of just going out all guns blazing and dispatching enemies. You can play in a hitman way and take out enemies in a stealthy way. How you play is your choice, I found a mix of elements to be the most fun. The hacking of drones and cars is where the game shines. It's lots of fun. As with any Watch Dogs, you can take control of a whole host of vehicles and enjoy the stunning views of London.

One twist with the games is the ability to recruit almost any character you encounter in the world to fight for your cause. These recruits become playable characters. Each character has their strengths and weaknesses and unique abilities. You can enable permadeath which means as your characters die, they can't respawn. If all your characters die, the game is over when permadeath is enabled. This feature adds another element to the solid gameplay, a real sense of tension and suspense.

"watchdogslegion_2"

The gameplay is familiar to any GTA, drive, kill and finish the story. The gameplay is easy to pick up. The hacking elements can be tricky at times when doing it through the lens of a security camera. The voice acting and your sidekick Bagley add a voice of reason to the whole story. The main missions are well structured, dystopian excels through the storytelling of the gameplay. There is enough variety in gameplay to keep you occupied for hours on end. If you finish the game, there are tons of side quests, recruiting opportunities and mini-games like football and darts.

"watchdogslegion_3"

There will be online and co-op, it's pencilled in for December.

Legion is lots of fun. You can spend hours just wondering around the city and taking in the sights. Gameplay and in particular, the hacking mechanisms and the use of drones add a whole another layer to the gameplay. It's fun to hijack a drone and take out the Albion henchmen. Car mechanics are decent. It treads the line between a simulator and arcade racing, it's decent but not the highlight of the game. In conclusion, it's worth picking up and will have you coming back for more.

Overall: 8/10
Developer: Wildfire Game

Platforms: PC

Genre: Action, Adventure, RPG, Early Access

Publisher: bilibili

Eastern Exorcist is the wonderfully dark animated side-scrolling hack and slash RPG. It is a hack and slash that requires thought and strategy, you can't just button bash through monsters, spirits, and bosses. It's light on the RPG elements but builds a hugely impressive and immersive world.

The first thing that struck me is the art style, hand-drawn Chinese art style. It underpins all the aspects of the game from level design, character design, demon, and boss design. This wonderful art-style brings all the aspects together. The level design and game presentation look amazing, it's a visual feast. On top of this, the wonderful character animation brings your character and his actions to life. You get immersed in this dark and demon-filled world from your first battle. The level design complements this world so well, the world enhances the story and game progression. The animation of the character is just superb, every enemy and boss has the same attention to detail as the protagonist. The art style brings this game to life and to be honest, I haven't been this impressed by the visual of a game in a long time. You could spend hours in awe of the visuals alone.

"easternexorcist1"

The game centres around a hack and slash combat style with a highly responsive control system. Every action you make with your character is fluid, realistic, and responsive. This game perfects the mechanics of combat and character movement, you get the sense you are in total control. There is no lag or jitteriness in your character control. The game places an understanding that each mechanic serves a purpose. To successfully negotiate the game you need to master and understand when to use each mechanic. Every aspect of the game has it's a purpose and as the player explores, the more you learn. Eastern Exorcist is a difficult but rewarding challenge, while it may become frustrating at times, there is a huge sense of achievement as you progress.

Game controls and the visual feast on display emphasise the two most important parts of the game, the other less integral part is the RPG element. I'm not a huge RPG fan, I like a mix of RPG and combat with the emphasis being on combat and game mechanics. For me the game strikes the right balance, there are some light RPG elements, and the storyline complements and enhances the game. I loved the storyline is set out fairly early and this darkness sets a backdrop for the entire game. The dark levels, bosses, and world play well with the story of the battles in the game. The story element isn't obsolete but is somewhat of an unsung hero in the game.

"easternexorcist2"

In totality, I thoroughly enjoyed the game however I did find parts of the game samey. In between each boss fight, I found there was a level of repetition of platform sections and killing demons. Some more variety of puzzles would have complemented the killing a lot more. I think this is where you could find criticism of the game. I felt the variation in bosses more than outweighed the pre-boss section.

This is a real gem, wonderfully animated and designed. A good learning curve with a lot of frustration at times due to boss fights, the frustration is the unforgiving nature of the game if you use the wrong mechanic as opposed to a badly designed or skewed game. The payoff of beating each boss and progressing to the next one and the relief in some cases. It's a wonderfully tough game that requires a level of concentration to beat it. It's a must buy.

Overall: 9/10

Developer: Awesome Games Studio

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One (Reviewed)

Genre: Comic Book Roguelite Action

Publisher: Awesome Games Studio

Fury Unleashed is a roguelite action platformer based in a comic book world, there are three comics that you will play through. Each chapter of the comic book contains levels that are randomly generated full of baddies and challenges to navigate. Fury Unleashed is a mix of an old skool shooter like Metal Slug and a platformer. Its default settings are set to hard difficulty. This can be changed for those who don't enjoy a tough roguelite game. The game can be played in either solo or co-op mode, I haven't had the chance to play it in co-op mode but would love to. The game includes a few key features that enhance the game and its playability. The game can be played as you desire, you can meticulously go through each chapter or you can be all out and attack the levels if you take the second approach you are rewarded with higher combos which in turn give you more ink (game currency) and healables. In turn, gaining ink and levelling up your character allows you to spend skill points that allow you to enhance your skills and attributes. This allows you to complement your playstyle as you see fit and as this game is tough, gaining skills and upgrading your character is required no matter which plays style you use.

"furyunleashed_1"

The gameplay consists of battling, shooting, stomping, and meleeing through a varying number of frames in each level, you must navigate to the exit point of each level. The goal is to get through each level to face an end of the comic boss who is usually a huge nasty that occupies the majority of the screen. In the game you gain ink by killing enemies and beating challenges, the ink allows you to purchase in-game items that help you beat the game. More ink can be gained by chaining combos and killing enemies in quick succession too. You can buy new melee and guns throughout the game, each item having its pros and cons, you can choose which suit your style of play. The game action, enemies and levels flow well, the feeling of killing enemies and navigating the levels is smooth, action-packed and tons of fun. As you progress further into the game, the boss battles become more epic. The violence and gore are well suited for the game, there is huge fun and enjoyable element to the randomly generated levels as you must reply levels, it removes any sense of repetitiveness and just means every playthrough is unique.

"furyunleashed_2"

On the hard setting alone, the game is fiendishly tough, but every level completion is a huge achievement. It mixes the right amount of platformer and shoot 'em up. From the get-go, it's lots of fun and easy to pick up and play but hard to master which are usually the signs of the best games. It incorporates lots of elements like levelling up, character loadout and customisation with a beautiful game with lots of action. It's a sheer joy to play.

Overall: 9/10

Developer: Studio Nanafushi

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), Switch

Genre: Action, Indie

Publisher: Marvelous Europe

Dead or School is a fantastic side-scrolling shooter/beat 'em up. It's a highly stylized Japanese cartoony adventure that is big on the zombie survival theme. You are Hisako who has been forced underground due to the zombie apocalypse. She must fight the zombies and return to her life above ground. If you have ever been to Tokyo you will recognize a whole host of subways you must battle out of. You are equipped with an array of guns to fight the horde.

"deadorschool-combat6"

I have to say the animation is stunning and there is real detail to every cut scene, level and conversation in the game. There is a real cinematic feel to the cut-scenes and in-game story too, The graphics and level design add to the sense of this apocalyptic world Hisako inhabits, there is a contrast from the character animation of main characters and gruesome zombies. The main characters are bright and have that amazing manga/anime style with a colourful design, as opposed to the zombies which are dark, creepy and scary. This dichotomy really permeates the whole game and gives a sense of foreboding. The level design is a mix of underground stations ruined by the zombies and other end of world events, you must navigate from subway station to subway station to fight zombies.

"deadorschool-customisation4"

There is a solid and enjoyable levelling up system through the game, each level you progress through will allow you to gain sufficient points to level up, you can customise your loadout and improve and upgrade your guns too. The gameplay hits that sweet spot between 2.5D shooting while having enough puzzles and platform aspects to keep you going. While the zombies can get a bit tedious, mid-level and end-level bosses break up the gameplay superbly. I have enjoyed many 2.5D shooters and beat em ups, Dead or School with its fantastic visuals and stunning character design add for a satisfying and rewarding experience. The story is particularly bad in Dead or School, it's a case of it's so bad that is good. Lots of elements of horror present throughout.

"deadorschool-combat5"

It's a really slick and beautifully presented game, the mechanics are straightforward and you will be flying along in no time. The game starts with you waking up in a prison after the plane crash, you come across with the city of Jericho under a nanovirus called dFrag, which infects its inhabitants with a kind of evil artificial intelligence. If you think the crash wasn't enough, you still have to deal with religious fanatics who believe that this virus is an Evil Force or salvation for the End Times.

Your main goal is to save some girl, for me, they should have worked a bit more on the plot to get you more interested since the beginning but during the game, the history does start to hook you more.

""
Creating your character: There are 6 options of classes with a profession and a background, unfortunately, there aren’t many options for you to choose during the formation of your character but at the end it doesn’t really matter because you will be using a huge armour over it, that brings us to an awesome detail on this game that is the fact that everything that you equip changes you visually which gives you the sensation of “My character is unique” I wanna start talking about the tutorial, which is fantastic! It is simple, quick and very efficient. Putting you in the face of danger right away, that helps you to understand and memorize how everything works. The things that the tutorial doesn’t cover are no problem for you to get it by yourself.

The game “coin” is the scrap you collect, it works like experience points and also virtual currency within the game and can be used to evolve your energy core (which also works as a reference for your character's level), upgrade weapons, and purchase items from merchants.

"The_Surge_2-screenshots5"

The Upgrade system is pretty simple and fun because it gives you the precise sensation that you are in total control of where your character is going. The strongest point, in my opinion, is the fact that if you want to upgrade your arms you have to go after somebody that has an altered arm and SLICE IT OFF! Same for all other parts. The weapons upgrade is also very simple to understand and also really cool to do it because it shows you very clearly what you are changing, making the game EVEN more personalized.

Something that deserves a great highlight are the drones you have! Each with a specific function like; fire, spray (graffiti on any structure of the game, a mechanism similar to that of the Souls franchise, which alerts other players to secret paths, nearby dangers, etc.), put your flag, etc.

The fighting system is simple to understand and demands a lot of strategy from you and patience, you have to aim a specific part of the body to attack, the boss fights can take a while because you need to take your time during the combat but they are all awesome to go through.
To recover your health bar, you must spend a power module, and at the same time, to fill that module you must defeat your opponents. That is, if you are close to death, practically the only chance to recover is to face an opponent. The other way is to find a recovery point.

"The_Surge_2-screenshots6"

Tip: Keep an eye for weak points (if you are not looking for any specific parts) and be “patient”, the fights require some real thinking and attention to your stamina (you need it to perform an attack). An exposed area will take more damages so they are better to finish quickly an opponent, the parts with armour are more resistant but cutting that part of will give you the upgrade piece or that armour will be available for you to create. Another great tip that is to use the "parry", for common enemies and also for bosses. Mastering this mechanics, which is not as demanding as other games in the genre, is fundamental for those who want to play the game more calmly.
Ps: Get ready to die A LOT… no surprise there since we are talking about a “SOULS” kind of game

The graphics are not the best part of the game, even on the PS4 the textures take a while to render… I have no big complains about the graphics but that “non-finished” texture is something that disturbs and to be honest is very outdated.
The thematic is INCREDIBLE! And it goes well with the “Souls” way. I’m a BIG fan of the “Cyber Punk” thematic.

Sounds & Music: Unfortunately, I haven’t much to say about this topic, because the job done on the voices were really well done and you can also notice a big variety of accents (I’m a fan of accents). The music fits really well in the game but is almost unnoticeable, I believe that may cause a “fade effect” on the music, don’t get me wrong the music is cool but it does not stand out, the fact that the song is not “loud” all the time gives you a good immersion.

""

I haven’t played the first game, but as far as I could see this apple didn’t fall far from the tree and you don’t need to play the first one to understand what is going on, the games are not directly related. The game has a great mix between explaining too much and go find it works by yourself. The equipment’s design is great! The game atmosphere is perfect! The last time I remember seeing something worried with the details of your surroundings was on the movie “ROBOCOP”, just like on the movie you can watch the NEWS on the TVs, that may sound silly but it does give you a perfect notion of what is going on in the city without you having to hear from some NPC. The game has a great dynamism there are several types of weapon available that will suit different play styles. If you like fast attacks, it is possible to wear "gloves" that do less damage but also uses less “stamina” on each attack and allow tactics like "hit and run" more easily. Those who like to use heavy weaponry will have weapons of high damage, but are slower and use more energy in each movement, the game allows you to create up to three models of equipment, it is possible to have sets that adapt to various situations... Something that can be annoying is having to kill the same “people” over and over again, but it is a “mark” of the “SOULS” series. And that forces you to go even further every time you play and give you that “fear of dying” that the games nowadays don’t have it anymore, the games are always saving every 5 minutes. Playing “The Surge 2” made me remember a lot a game called “BloodBorn” but with the cyber punk thematic. The maps are easy to memorize and so carefully done.

Enjoy the slow motion gore scenes

Overall: 8/10

Developer: Asobo Studio

Platforms: PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), Xbox One, PC

Genre: Action/Adventure

Publisher: Focus Home Interactive

Follow the grim tale of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo (Who has an unknown disease forcing him to spend his childhood locked in his room, so for that reason he never saw the world per se) in a heartrending journey through one of the darkest hours of history. Hunted by Inquisition soldiers and surrounded by unstoppable swarms of rats, Amicia and Hugo will learn how to trust each other as they struggle to survive against overwhelming odds and will fight to find the doctor that was taking care of Hugo in this brutal, unforgiving world.

The Year is 1349. The plague ravages the Kingdom of France. Amicia and her younger brother Hugo are pursued by the Inquisition through villages devastated by the disease. On their way, they will have to join forces with other children and evade swarms of rats using fire and light. Aided only by the link that binds their fates together, they will face untold horrors in their struggle to survive, as their adventure begins… the time of innocence ends.

"A_Plague_Tale-Innocence12"

Enough of what we know already! Let´s get into this game!

A Plague Tale: Innocence it’s a third person stealth/story driven kind of game but if you are not a fan of the genre (like I was BEFORE playing this game) I STRONGLY advise you to try this game out! The game follows a straight line so there is no real difficulty for you to accomplish the game (There is no Easy, Medium or Hard mode), the game also doesn’t give you many options other than where you should go if you try to go to a place that the game doesn’t want you to go you will face an invisible wall that blocks you from going there, the open areas have a path for you to follow but you can look for items like “gifts”, these items have a story behind them, and if you are into history its guaranteed that you will like to read each one of them.

The puzzles: The puzzles aren’t hard to solve, because you always have the resources you need either at hand or really near you when you need it and the characters explain exactly what you have to do and how to do it. Don’t get me wrong! That DEFINITELY does not make the game bad, actually, the puzzles and sneaking through the inquisitors are one of the best things on the game. To help you get past the inquisitors and the puzzles Amicia has a Sling, which you can give a good upgrade, after learning alchemy you can create stun ammo or fireballs (Or Fire Stones if you like hahaha). You can also expand your carrying capacity, improve your resistance “armor” or even reduce the noise you make when walking with these upgrades. Playing as Amicia the game mechanics work very well BUT I do have a small issue on that part… for the first hours that I played the game, I found it very “heavy” to control Amicia, after getting used to it, it was ok. I read some people saying that other characters could be a challenge for you to fulfil your puzzles and that they have a bit of a delay to follow your commands and that could be the end for you… I strongly disagree, if you play the game properly and pay attention to the NPCs you won´t have any problem like I didn’t. Another great thing on the game is that if a rat or an inquisitor gets you… that’s it… try again! BUT this isn’t a real problem to this game because the auto-save is very reliable, it saves your progress all the time so you don’t go back too much from where you died.

One of the options you have is to face the inquisitors with your sling and for that, you can count with an auto-aim system to hit them on the head, don´t try to turn into some kind of Rambo and face many inquisitors at once because you won’t be able to face too many of them. Aside from your sling, you can choose to throw stones (Or jars) with your hand to call enemies´ attention and the most important thing of all is that when you use your hand instead of using your sling you don’t make any noise.

"A_Plague_Tale-Innocence11"

If I wasn’t writing a review I would just say “NAILED IT” hahaha but like Jack, the Ripper would say “Let´s go piece by piece” … (This expression works better in Portuguese I guess hahaha).

RATS DUDE! RATS EVERYWERE! ANGRY! BLOODTHISTY ANGRY MULTIPLE RATS! They are the main thing on this game, the sound of them squealing around you or when they break through walls or come out of the floor… Craving for a piece of your flesh is real… really disturbing! But in some points, it’s a bit “clumsy?” or “bumbling?” I´m not sure… the thing is that they walk through each other and don´t follow the laws of gravity (aside from other bugs), which breaks the immersion for a few seconds, unfortunately. Like I said before, the sound and the number of rats that are coming for you is at least agonizing as hell, as it should be.

The characters voice: That is something that the creators need to work on it and improve a bit. I played the game both in English and French to see if there was any “acting” difference and the conclusion was: None at all… It´s the same, to be honest It was really hard to play the game in French because I don´t speak French so I needed the subtitles and since the game has some really struggling action scenes, you have to choose between read what they are talking or run for your life…its nearly impossible to do both.

The Soundtrack/ Environment: They have made a BEAUTIFUL soundtrack for “The Plague Tale” it has all the elements that the game atmosphere needs and totally goes with the scenarios and what the game is trying to pass! The soundtrack basically walks together with the environment that is full of accurate history moments from the XIV century, everything is well built, and the graphics are beautiful, giving you the exact sensation of how things look like on that dark period, it is very immersive.

"A_Plague_Tale-Innocence08"

I really hope that “Innocence” it’s just the beginning and that this game is just a first chapter of the “Plague Tales” because you can easily see that this game is made by people who LOVE what they´re doing! What they accomplished here is quite unique, because every time we see a medieval game the first things that come to our mind is “Ohhh another RPG… An Action game… etc” but not this time! They brought a very new approach to the theme.

The game has 17 chapters and has a lot of stealth/sneak parts which I never really enjoyed until now. The graphics are excellent! The plot is really HEAVY and the kid´s innocence makes everything darker. Unfortunately, there are some ugly bugs (which I understand in a company that is “starting” this kind of games now). The game has some strong points like the real danger feeling that the action scenes give you and how well built is the brother and sister relationship and also the fact that the kid you´re protecting is not annoying like normal kids in games are, these elements help the game to “catch” you pretty quickly.

"A_Plague_Tale-Innocence04"

The environment is unbelievable! They are scary, disturbed, horrible, gory and gives you that agony that we all love in a game, right? Hahaha, the developers described their landscapes like this:

“This Game may contain content not appropriate for all ages, or may not be appropriate for viewing at work: Frequent Violence or Gore, General Mature Content”.

So that’s it! The game has all the elements to be an EPIC 10, but unfortunately, it is really hard to get it right on the first time. Hope to hear about the next game really soon.

Overall: 8/10
;

I would like/prefer an option where you could skip the cut scenes quicker and an entire audio narration would have been ideal. You wake up weeks later in a derelict detention facility inside the city. Armor-clad soldiers enforce Martial Law, robots are on a rampage, and a dark, expanding nano storm looms over the cityscape...”

That was a quick preview of the game history, “The surge 2” brings you to the city of Jericho, a city that people KILL for scraps, get ready for brutal melee fights where you need to cut off parts of the enemy that you want to loot.

Overall: 8/10
;

Curse of the Dead Gods is a skill-based roguelike that is set in a temple dungeon. You navigate through a maze of levels, a host of nasty creatures and ultimately a boss in each temple. The game is played from an isometric perspective and the emphasis is on mastering the simple controls but in an extremely challenging environment.

"curseofthedeadgods1"

Initially, you are set up with a primary melee weapon (sword) and a ranged weapon (pistol), as you battle through each dungeon you will gain relics, power-ups and the ability to offer sacrifices to the gods. The game mechanics centre around a mix of using melee, ranged attacks, parrying and dodging. The critical element in terms of the gameplay is the difficulty level, precision is required throughout and using all the core game mechanics is the only way to survive to progress through the game. If the brutal nature of the difficulty setting isn't challenging enough, your character can become cursed which makes for an even tougher challenge. Each creature you encounter has its own unique set of attacks and defensive skills that you need to overcome. The difficulty setting may put players off but the rich variety of gameplay, playstyles and environments are superb. It should be noted that you will play for many hours to get the most of this game, this isn't a straight pick up and play, you will die a lot before you make any meaningful progress. The learning curve is fairly steep.

"curseofthedeadgods2"

The whole game is illustrated using a dark cartoon style. The environments and characters have an amazing level of detail, the temple dungeon theme ties in the levels, characters, demons and all the gameplay as well. The levels themself are darkly lit which are illuminated by a torch you carry or fires that can be set. Levels contain traps, treasure and a host of evil creatures lurking around each corner. The temples are immersive and the mechanics and joy of killing the creatures make you come back for more. The deeper you progress through each dungeon, the wider variety of levels that you will uncover and different challenges.

"curseofthedeadgods3"

Curse of the Dead Gods is a superb roguelike that marries difficult challenging experiences into this temple themed world. The game mechanics are simple and intuitive but requires skill and patience to master. The ability to level up with either gold or a blood sacrifice is a neat touch that is complemented by the addition of curses as you progress through each stage. The level design and gameplay feel are superb, the game is tough and rewarding. Multiple types of melee and ranged weapons allow you to build a play style that suits you. The world is a dark temple with tons of creatures looking to get you, it's a truly immersive experience.

I would like/prefer an option where you could skip the cut scenes quicker and an entire audio narration would have been ideal. These are small gripes in an otherwise enjoyable experience.

I would recommend a venture into the underground world Dead or School with Hisako.

Overall: 7.5/10

Developer: Deck13

Platforms: PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), Xbox One, PC

Genre: Action/RPG

Publisher: Focus Home Interactive

“On the way to Jericho City, your plane is shot down by a mysterious storm and crash-lands in the outskirts.

Overall: 8/10
;

Returnal is the next generation sci-fi based roguelike 3D person shooter from Housemarque that is exclusive to PS5. While this intro tries to summarise the game in a short sentence it doesn't do this game the justice it deserves. The game thematically lies somewhere between sci-fi, mystery and some horror elements this is due to the Alien-esque nature of encounters with the enemies. The gameplay is a roguelike as you die a lot and lose the majority of your perks apart from a few permanent items as well. The game covers a lot of genres of game and themes too.

You are Selene who has crashed landed on Atropos (an alien planet) where you are searching for a broadcast signal and this is all you know and this is how the story is set up. From the initial frame, the impressive cinematics and the crash land help to set up the story and mystery of the game. Very little is given away which creates a level of intrigue and mystery, this is all set in the beautiful dark and wonderful of Atropos. The design and layout do give off Alien vibes throughout the game. As the game is a roguelike where you will die a lot, more story elements and your understanding of the world grows with every cycle (loop) of the game.

It's difficult to pinpoint and place the game in one genre but the game has elements of Hades, a bullet hell shooter, Doom, Metroid Prime and the Hades comparison comes from the roguelike nature as well as some well-crafted storytelling wherein each cycle more is revealed. Doom in terms of the fast-paced shooter elements but 3rd person. The bullet hell feels of the enemies you encounter and just the manic nature of the enemies you encounter. There are lots of platforming elements too and an amount of discovery at each level.

"returnal1"

The levels are procedurally generated so each run will have a varied gaming experience and a novel feel, also each run will have a slightly different difficulty level too depending on what power-ups are available.

The power-up system is varied due to various upgrades and collectable items. Straight-up power-ups that have a positive effect include weapon upgrades, health upgrades and efficiency upgrades. You can fabricate and make other upgrades too. Then you have malignant upgrades/power-ups that can have positive as well as negative effects, the negative effects can be removed by completing specific tasks or you may be lucky and avoid the negative malignant effect. The game has a multitude of effects and events that will vary each run and which can make the run easier or tougher as well. There is a huge emphasis on risk and reward throughout the choices you make. That's why I'd also classify that the difficulty varies depending on your run, upgrades available and the procedural levels that are updated.

Each loop/cycle whereby you die and come back act as a learning and help to introduce into other devices in the game such as collectable items, upgrades and power-ups. It will take several deaths in the game before you start the whole power-up systems as well as the collectables available and their power. Every inevitable death allows you to progress further in the story but also allows you to start with more permanent power-ups. The game does a great job of walking you through each element and its potential effect. I enjoyed that you learned more and more things as you progressed.

"returnal2"

The game starts in this dark rain-sodden forest where very little is known, the detailed environments add the dark atmospheric vibes. Even though the levels are procedurally generated there is a good mix of items to collect and platform elements amongst the all-out shooter action. The game uses some clever narrative technique including the use of 1st person view for story elements and that you pick up voice messages from yourself all over Atropos. You are primarily in 3rd person view which gives you a broad view of each area and heightens the gameplay elements. Each voice note adds a little more detail of what is going in the world and helps the drive.

The world reminds me a lot of the film Prometheus with a clear Alien vibe throughout the whole game. While I wouldn't classify the game as a horror it does give that sense in large parts of the game as enemies spawn out of nothingness. Even though each level isn't huge, the art style and level design give the game a huge sense of scale and the huge world that exists. The game melds level design, Alien themes and this dark atmospheric tone which gives the sense you are a small survivor in a huge vicious world.

A lush map that helps to guide you from level ("room") to level provides a navigation mechanism and helps you to find upgrades and power-ups whilst giving a sense of direction. The map allows you to plot a path for gaining the most buffs and power-ups or you can bypass them and head more directly to a boss.

"returnal3"

The dual sense and haptic feedback are integrated seamlessly into Returnal. Every feature of the dual sense has been considered in the design and gameplay elements. The first thing that hit was the haptic feedback, the gentle vibrations that mimic rain and the use of sound to further engross you into the world of Atropos. Dualsense gives feedback such as the ground you are treading on, rainfall and tremors from enemies. It's all these little things that add to the whole sense of game immersion.

The L2 trigger serves as two buttons where pressing until halfway gives a zoomed fire whereas pushing past the tension point gives the L2 button an alternate fire. Again the haptic feedback provides a system whereby you feel more immersed in the game and these small but clever uses of the controller are enjoyable and make sense. The dual sense gives a real tactile feel to the game and what is going.

3D audio is the other buzzword and the game promotes amazing sound effects and soundtrack. I own just regular headphones but the world seems more alive when I play with headphones, I could hear every element of the world from the weather, enemies and my footsteps. The audio and soundtrack are superb.

"returnal5"

The main game mode is the rogue-like one player shooter whereby you have to kill every enemy to reach a boss to progress to the next biome. There are two other modes available, online mode and challenges.

The online mode is more along the lines that you can avenge or take the gear of other fallen Selenes in your world, this is illustrated by a corpse of Selene that you will find with the Gamertag of the fallen Selene.

Challenges are like an arcade run where you have to achieve certain goals and you will be placed on a leaderboard to gain ultimate grabbing rights.

While I have only spent a few hours playing on the day 1 patch, the day 1 patch improves navigation and identifies exits to each room in the game. This improves the visual aids to the user which is noticeable in the first level. There are some texture improvements on both Selene and enemies you encounter too, the colours on the enemies are more vivid. The majority of the day 1 patches are extra visual polish on the game. The game does seem to run smoother however this is only a slight tweak and the difference isn't massive compared to the 20 hours plus I played on the pre-day 1 patch version. Day 1 patch mainly is adding extra polish to a stunning game.

"returnal4"

The game is quite challenging and can be unforgiving at times if I'm being honest, the learning curve is steep and I would classify the game as hard. It does become easier as you progress through every run and learn more about the powerups and shortcuts that are available. If you are used to bullet shooter or roguelike games, then you may find the difficulty level to your taste, the difficulty doesn't detract from the experience but enhances the overall gameplay and longevity of the game.

I have to say from the first run through the game to my last run-through, I found myself in awe of different elements of the game. I was struck by the intro, the crash landing and just seeing this world, the cinematics is superb and it felt movie-like. The use of the dual sense and haptic feedback just made the whole experience more immersive, sound effects, and noises, while these may seem small, the whole Returnal experience was enhanced. The use of the story narrative where you piece a little bit more with each run adds a whole lot of mystery and intrigue. Finding voice messages from different versions of Selene dotted throughout the world makes the narrative even more powerful and a bit of mind bend. The gameplay has a mix of action, shooter and platformer with some puzzles thrown in for good measure. Big huge scary monsters are rendered and look amazing. The boss fights are big and epic. The game has lots of variety and requires several run-throughs before you gain a thorough understanding of all the gameplay mechanics and what is possible. It's a game that has all the elements above but is great fun too, the pace is spot on, there is variety in how you play. The game is challenging, you will come back for more. Each game mechanic, each game design and each decision by developers all enhance the game and make it even more impactful. It's a superb hell of a ride.

When I saw the trailer of the game I was unsure what to make of it, but to my surprise, it's super fun straight away and laugh out loud funny. The game is a puzzle with a huge emphasis on humour. The game story is narrated by a father telling his son about the adventures of this small cloud. This story underpins the entire journey of the cloud and the situations the cloud gets into.

"rainonyourparade1"

You take the role of a cloud that ends up in several scenarios that must ruin the day for the unfortunate people below. Scenarios include such events as wedding days, commute to work, defusing a bomb and going to the beach. It's hard to describe the game, it is a mixture of a puzzle game and slapstick comedy. The game is humorous and doesn't take itself too seriously. There are some superb homages to some classic games throughout the levels, these levels are executed superbly too. The sheer unpredictable nature of the game from level to level makes each level super fun and novel too. The developers and designers have managed to get the humour spot on and it is laugh out loud funny. The character's animations add to the slapstick comedy too. The game is ridiculously easy to play and so much fun, I have to say, I was addicted after the first 10 minutes. The jokes and gamin humour is superb, I love it doesn't take itself too seriously. Each level is beautifully crafted and each level is unique, they have managed to fuse the artwork, sound effects, music and gameplay into cohesive and superb gaming that's lots of fun.

Hades is the wonderful imagined rogue-like dungeon crawler. The game manages to delicately balance the rouge-like game with a story underneath, it's tough and difficult but each play-through allows you to power up to progress a little further each time. Every subsequent run is a little easier. This is set in the wonderfully reimagined Underworld with a host of characters from Greek mythology and you play as Zagreus and his journey to escape.

The game centres on Zagreus (son of Hades) and his journey out of the Underworld. You start with a weapon that has a normal and a special attack, you can unlock more weapons as you progress through the game. You can cast a gem too that can inflict damage. These are your primary forms of attack. You have a dash/dodge mechanic too. As you progress through the game you gain power-ups (boons), these last for several dungeons, until you die or until you replace them. These power-ups are vital to surviving each dungeon and ultimately escaping. The combination of your initial weapon of choice and the power-ups define your playstyle through that run and each run is different due to the random nature of power-ups. That's the game in a nutshell in a simplistic form.

"hades1"

The developers have kept the gameplay super simple but allowed for an amazing array of character build types from melee, ranged or somewhere in between. Then the power-up mechanism has a huge array of choice and combinations too. As with any rogue-like, you will die a lot. I found the numerous character playstyles that varied so much through each run which gave the game longevity and its novelty factor. There wasn't a point in the game after 30 hours of game time that I felt bored, it just was engrossing and engaging, it was tons of fun. It was so much fun and difficult too.

"hades2"

Hades is primarily a cartoon(y) art style, the Underworld has several stages that are themed too. Each stage has its nuances and level design features that can be used to your advantage. There is a huge cast of characters of Greek Gods from Hermes to Athena to Ares to name a few, each with their personality and voice-over too. The voice-overs and acting are superb which adds a whole another dimension to the gameplay and storytelling elements. The characters help to paint the world around you and your place in it. Humour is used effectively too to enhance the storytelling aspects as well. The lighting, sound effects and level design are amazing. Hades combines an amazingly addictive rogue-like with a fantastic story and setting to boot. The choice of Greek Mythology is present with the costumes, weapon designs and every artefact at every level.

"hades3"

Hades achieves so much that many rogue-likes games want to accomplish and does it in an amazingly and thoroughly enjoyable way. The visuals are superb and every aspect is artistically rendered with a meticulous eye for detail. The use of Greek mythology sets the scene for the game as you battle your way out of the Underworld. The art style is lush, vibrant and dark amidst the background of the Underworld. It delivers an amazing story with fantastic voice acting. The story is intriguing and has the right amount of humour to enhance it even more. Every character looks stunning and the voice acting ties the story and gameplay together. The voice-overs are a masterstroke too, this helps elevate the storytelling. The game achieves a wonderful balance between being not forgiving but giving you enough bonus and power-ups for subsequent plays. You will die a lot but the game balance is fair and the more you play, the more persistent power up and perks you can use for the next run through. This is what a rogue-like should aim to achieve.

"hades4"

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.

Overall: 8/10
;
