POWERFUL FEATURE SET IN DUBLIN’S GANGLAND TO OPEN IN CINEMAS ON 21ST JUNE

Marian Quinn’s TWIG, a powerful new Irish feature, will be released in cinemas across Ireland on 21st June.

TWIG, which was the opening film at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival, features rising star Sade Malone (Tin Star, Pistol) opposite BAFTA, Tony Award-winning and Emmy nominated Brían F. O’Byrne (Little Boy Blue, Million Dollar Baby) and a strong Irish cast including Ghaliah Conroy, Donncha Tynan, Susan McKeown, Jack Meade and Kwaku Fortune.

Set in the underworld of gangland Dublin, TWIG is a re-telling of the Greek tragedy ‘Antigone’. Twig (Malone) yearns to escape with her lover from the grip of her family’s criminal legacy but when a deadly shootout claims one brother and forces another, Paulie, into hiding, she is pulled back into the chaos. Fear spreads throughout the local community as crime lord Leon (O’Byrne) vows to let Paulie’s body rot in the street.  However, Leon’s guns and henchmen are no match for Twig’s iron-will as she, armed with nothing but her unwavering resolve, defiantly sets out to do the right thing and bury her brother.

Speaking about the cinema release, TWIG writer/director Marian Quinn said “What a time to bring this ancient tale to today’s audiences.  A young woman is constantly seeking to do the right thing, to pick up the flame of justice, which propels Sade Malone’s thrilling performance at its core.  This drive and passion infuses all the young cast, one of the great joys in making this film.”

TWIG was written and directed by Marian Quinn whose previous coming-of-age feature 32A won the Best First Feature Award at the Galway Film Fleadh.   Produced by Ruth Carter for Blue Ink Films (Lies We Tell, Damo & Ivor – The Movie) and Tommy Weir for Janey Pictures (32A) with funding from Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán, and RTÉ, it filmed on location around Dublin’s inner city and docklands.  Director of Photography was the multi-award-winning Declan Quinn whose projects have received international acclaim (Leaving Las Vegas, Breakfast on Pluto, In America) while the BAFTA-winning and IFTA-nominated Tony Craunston (The Royle Family, Vivarium, The Farthest) was Editor on the project.

Wildcard Distribution will release TWIG in Irish cinemas from 21st June.
