Summary:

Marvel Dimensions is a book that collects a number of short introductory stories on The Marvels, or the heroes of the past, such as the Human Torch and his sidekick, Toro. Alex Ross has illustrated each page carefully and with painstaking detail, such as the blue shades the reader will encounter while delving into Namor the Sub-Mariner’s backstory. Many heroes are featured in this book, from the Fantastic Four to the Incredible Hulk. Each story features a different hero’s point of view, such as the commentary of Bucky, Captain America’s sidekick during the First World War. Bruce Banner describes the accident that leads to his transformation into the Incredible Hulk.

Thor’s story has a great introduction from Donald Blake, who could summon Thor with the tap of his wooden staff. Villains such as Loki and Magneto have their backstories featured as well in this book. The book switches over to the Machine Man, who reports that he can see the past and the present: recordings left behind by the watchers. The Machine Man introduces the reader to the In-verse, which is the opposite split outcome of the original Marvel universe timeline, emphasizing the reverse actions of each hero and Villain.

I love the concept of the In-verse, which takes the origin stories of heroes that we know and turns the expectations and results “inside-out”. For example, the gamma radiation that turned Dr.Banner into the Hulk is experienced as a deliberate choice instead of an accident; and the struggle for power becomes a tool that Banner uses against humans when he becomes the Hulk. Daredevil becomes the Inquisitor, Iron Man becomes the Blacksmith, and more. Names and motives are exchanged with all heroes.

I think this book is a great book for both newcomers and seasoned comic readers; Comic readers can enjoy the story of the In-Verse, while newcomers get quick historical summaries about many heroes from the first half of the book. Alex Ross never fails to impress; With detailed visuals and story, this book is a must-read.

Overall: 10/10
