The Roller Champions Beta was a brief window into the new IP from Ubisoft. It's based around roller derby being merged into 3 versus 3 battle royale. The game combines elements of roller derby, racing games and sports games. I can draw comparisons in terms of gameplay of Rocket League, you and your team pit yourself against others online. In this game, you take control of a player instead of a vehicle though.

"rollerchampions1"

Roller Champions is based on roller derby, but this takes a 3 person team format, you have to capture the ball and put it into the goal. It's not that straightforward, when you capture the ball you must navigate a lap of the course before you can score. You must avoid enemy players to get the goal to open. You can go it all alone by dodging others or pass it to fellow team members, if you (and your team) manage that the goal will open and you get the opportunity to score. Opposition players can push, kick and take the ball off you. The game is based on these 3 versus 3 formats, where you can use your teams to pass the ball.

"rollerchampions2"

The graphics have a shine and you get a real sense of momentum when you play. You feel the crash and come together as players hustle for the ball to gain possession. It's fast-paced and there is always something happening in the game. There is rarely a dull moment. All of this combined with the solid online netplay and plenty of people on the servers was a great experience. The game is a mix of a racer, beat 'em up and sports game, these elements make Roller Champions.

"rollerchampions3"

I'm not sure if the balance is perfect but I think minor tweaks are required for defending teams, I feel the offensive teams are a bit overpowered. Apart from this point, it's an enjoyable experience. The game is straightforward to pick and the controls are simple too. Before you know it you are stuck in the action as well. It will be interesting to see how the final game turns out, this beta does give a good flavour of what we can look forward to.

The first set of DLC has come out for Valhalla, titled Wrath of the Druids. The expansion sees Eivor on his way to Ireland where you will pick up a new story arc and will see the amazing expanse that is Ireland.

To play the DLC you will have to complete one of the two first story arcs in England and an option to sail to Ireland will come via a stranger who will arrive in your camp. The power level in Ireland is 55 but it will adjust to your character level. This means you don't have to progress that much in the main game to enjoy the DLC. If you have played through Valhalla you will be higher than 55.

"ACV_druids1"

Ireland is a huge new area you get to explore, the map is impressive. The terrain is a lot more rugged and mountainous than the original game. If you are from Ireland or have visited Ireland, you will familiar with the locations which is a nice touch. As a gamer from Ireland, it's novel to travel to in-game places you know and have visited. The game does a good job of having that Irish vibe with the voice acting and lore of Ireland portrayed well. Irish landscapes are well rendered and you get a sense of life in the Viking era of Ireland. A mixture of Latin, Irish and English is spoken too. Druids add a sense of mysticism and mystery to the proceedings too. The architecture is faithfully recreating buildings of that era. You will be able to equip new unique items such as clothing and weapons too. You will encounter new enemies, animals throughout the DLC. Ubisoft gets the mix of a new place to play through with solid gameplay, stunning visuals and intriguing story arcs to boot. It was a joy to play and see places I was familiar with. There are new abilities and new gameplay mechanics and buildings too. It's a really solid offering and it adds to the game.

"ACV_druids2"

The standalone price for the season pass for Valhalla costs €39.99.

The season pass is included in the Gold and Ultimate editions of Valhalla.

The season pass will include access to Wrath of the Druids (released 13th May) and The Siege of Paris which will be released later in the year.

"ACV_druids3"

While the standalone price for the season pass may seem high, the Wrath of Druids is sizeable about 13 hours of main quests and 5 hours of side quests. It depends on if you need another fix of Valhalla, and if you do I think you will get your money's worth, this only part 1 of the DLC. I liked the new arcs, the additional skills, new enemies and the general Irish feel about the DLC. I have been to a lot of these places so it was interesting seeing the "Viking" version in the game. The voice acting, mysticism, the darkness all have been executed well. It was a joy to play the DLC. I remembered how much I have enjoyed Vahalla after I revisited the game via the DLC. I'm looking forward to the next set of DLC.

It combines the all-out action of a retro shooter rendered in beautiful pixel and allows for up to 4 players to play across a host of levels.

"gravityheroes1"

The gameplay is a homage to many classic retro shooters, you arrive on a level and you have to survive hordes of enemies. As you survive the hordes of enemies by dodging, killing and changing gravity, you will get access to power-ups to help you. The game is a mix of platformer and shooter but the ability to change gravity is unique and takes time to adjust to. Once you get used to the gravity mechanic, it adds a whole lot more to the game and elevates it from just a retro shooter. The gravity element is what makes the game stand out and novel. The game is chaotic, with limited level size filling up with tons of enemies. The shooter mechanics are superb and if you enjoy any shooters, this is a pleasure to play. The platform elements are decent but the main mechanics are gravity and shooters.

"gravityheroes2"

Each level and each character is rendered in beautiful pixel art. It becomes a superb gaming mechanic the more you get used to it. Levels are fun and chaotic, the mix of all gaming elements make for a challenging but enjoyable play. The pixel art accentuates the gameplay and gives some needed style to the game. The game supports up to 4 players local multiplayer which means even more mayhem. When I saw the trailer of the game I was unsure what to make of it, but to my surprise, it's super fun straight away and laugh out loud funny. The game is a puzzle with a huge emphasis on humour. The game story is narrated by a father telling his son about the adventures of this small cloud. This story underpins the entire journey of the cloud and the situations the cloud gets into.

"rainonyourparade1"

You take the role of a cloud that ends up in several scenarios that must ruin the day for the unfortunate people below. Scenarios include such events as wedding days, commute to work, defusing a bomb and going to the beach. It's hard to describe the game, it is a mixture of a puzzle game and slapstick comedy. The game is humorous and doesn't take itself too seriously. There are some superb homages to some classic games throughout the levels, these levels are executed superbly too. The sheer unpredictable nature of the game from level to level makes each level super fun and novel too. The developers and designers have managed to get the humour spot on and it is laugh out loud funny. The character's animations add to the slapstick comedy too. The game is ridiculously easy to play and so much fun, I have to say, I was addicted after the first 10 minutes. The jokes and gamin humour is superb, I love it doesn't take itself too seriously. Each level is beautifully crafted and each level is unique, they have managed to fuse the artwork, sound effects, music and gameplay into cohesive and superb gaming that's lots of fun. Pumpkin Jack is a 3D platformer set in a spooky mystical world with a fantastic cartoony vibe. This is an epic adventure through a hellish world where you play as Jack, the mythical Pumpkin Lord going through multiple levels. Pumpkin Jack is reminiscent of many fantastic 3D platformers, you take control of this hellish Jack character as he battles for good to overcome evil. I know the plot is nothing new but the game has a few gems that make it sound out from most 3D platformers.

"pumpkinjack1"

The designers and developers have created a fantastic spooky world, they have taken the spooky and evil theme and ran with it. The levels are well crafted with a varying degree of difficulty, each level introduces new mechanics that make each new area have a novelty. You will be greeted with a ton of puzzles too throughout each level. Your character can jump, melee and shot bad guys. There are unique sections in each game that break the monotony of just having a standard 3D platformer or problem-solving. The levels and characters are well rendered and the graphics are superb, they have fine-tuned the spooky cartoony feels. A fantastic musical score and theme underpin all the action, the voice acting is superb. The music adds so much to the game and it makes all the elements of the game come together. The boss encounters are fantastic and are probably my favourite parts of the game, the bosses are wonderfully rendered and quite challenging. They add another break from the standard 3D platformer format.

"pumpkinjack2"

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how addictive the game was, the control system is straightforward and easy to pick up and play. Once I spent a couple of hours getting used to game mechanics, I was hooked. The levels offer quite a varied gaming experience, action, puzzles and some aspects that felt like being on a rollercoaster! The game offers varied levels as well, each level has its unique game mechanic and new features. The level of story tension and build-up is done well, the storytelling aids the pace of the game and each level climaxes with a huge boss fight. Pumpkin Jack reminds me of many great 3D platformers but has its twists and humour. This is a fantastic platformer.

Lovecraft has already served as inspiration for several movies and games and now, developer Out of the Blue has decided to drink from this fountain, Call of the Sea, its action-puzzle title is based on the works of the famous writer.

You play as Norah, a woman suffering from an unknown disease (some black spots on both hands and sometimes has a hard difficulty on standing up or walking). Call of the Sea invites the player to explore a mysterious island off the coast of Tahiti in 1934 and try to decipher the unexplained disappearance of an archaeological expedition. The group, led by Harry, searched the local ruins and legends surrounding the region for a cure for the strange condition that afflicts Norah, after a few months without any kind of news from her husband, she receives a package in the mail with an old photo, a key with the initials CW and a bizarre dagger. The mission seems simple at first: find him. However, there is more to his illness and this island than one might think at first.

"CalloftheSea_1"

As the plot unfolds, we discover more details about the unfortunate ending of those who dared to set foot on the island, how their sanity gradually ebbed away, and we are forced to help Norah make a difficult decision: live or love.

The game has a great start! Directly linking to the great Cthulhu’s lore, the opening/beginning of the game is already amazing and very immersive.

The game has so much care on its creation like some letters have a short cutscene to illustrate what happened in the letter, this kind of detail gets me every time. Another great thing is that those who had read the books will see a bunch of direct references! Like de Vinyl from “The Music of Erich Zann” (One of my favourite tales by the way) or a newspaper talking about the family who lived on the farm from “Colour out of space”. So, if you are included in this level of appreciation of Lovecraft’s work, I strongly suggest you read everything! Another interesting writer to have a look at before you play is Julio Verne, I was lucky at this point, because I have read “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas”, and the book talks about the wonders of the mysteries that are hidden in the deeps of the sea.

The graphics reminded me a lot of Bioshock 3, being half drawn and half 3D. It has a brilliant landscape, worth it to take a few minutes to appreciate it.

"CalloftheSea_2"

Even though the games have this gigantic Lovecraft’s atmosphere, it brings a beautiful and joyful scenario with lots of singing birds… colours… and sunlight. Well… most of it anyway it does get dark as you go. So, from the first moments of Call of the Sea, it is evident that the game is inspired by many classic works of literature. Here we have clear evidence pointing to Julio Verne and H.P. Lovecraft. So that being said, Verne brings the amazing and beautiful part of the unknown in the meanwhile, Lovecraft, brings the dark cosmic part, which was an excellent mix for me and the game did it with perfection, as it's not a Lovecraftian horror game, but it doesn't leave aside its mysteries and influences.

Call of the Sea is divided into chapters where you'll have to unravel specific puzzles to have the means to solve an even bigger one that will give you the possibility to advance to the next part.

Assuming a didactic stance, the game starts the adventure calmly, with relatively simple challenges. However, as you progress into the island, the puzzles get more difficult with loads of “complex” puzzles that were made, so you take your time to solve them, they aren’t that easy but also not impossible that you would get stuck for days on it if you get all the clues that the game always gives you. So, remember, don’t play this game for the first time if you’re in a hurry. The best thing about these puzzles is that they are extremely rewarding when solved.

"CalloftheSea_3"

For me that the only bummer I saw during the game, was the fact that you can’t jump cutscenes nor dialogues, that’s a bit annoying when you are playing the game for the second and third time.

Norah has a diary which is extremely important to keep track of the updates that she does, so you have a beautiful immersion during this amazing experience. Every time Norah sees something important, a new note will appear in her notebook, and it's with these tips that the player needs to unravel the problems to advance to the next area and understand more about Henry's fate and the evil that befalls our explorer.

A good feature of the game is the fact that you can save anytime and continue exactly where you were at the moment you saved the game.

The soundtrack and sounds during the game are all impeccable! They go perfectly with the game’s atmosphere. My suggestion is that you play the game with a loud 5.1 Home heater or a good Headset, so you can feel the surroundings.

"CalloftheSea_4"

The voice acting is amazing, every single one of them does an excellent job, and we are accompanied by their beautiful narration until the last minutes of a short but memorable game. Part of the charm that captivates us comes precisely from the exceptional dubbing of Cissy Jones, a veteran of electronic games. Don’t get me wrong, the rest of the cast does a good job too, but Norah's is the soul of the game.

Call of the Sea was such a great surprise to me, from the first moment I saw a trailer I was intrigued with this game, being a huge fan of Lovecraft’s work, I was “puzzled” with this game and what it's about. When the opportunity of reviewing it, I was delighted to do it and the game gave me more than I was expecting from the beginning to the end of it, this is a 10 out of 10 game since you press “Start a new game”.

The game is a mix of platformer and shooter but the ability to change gravity is unique and takes time to adjust to. Once you get used to the gravity mechanic, it adds a whole lot more to the game and elevates it from just a retro shooter. The gravity element is what makes the game stand out and novel. When I saw the trailer of the game I was unsure what to make of it, but to my surprise, it's super fun straight away and laugh out loud funny. The game is a puzzle with a huge emphasis on humour. This story underpins the entire journey of the cloud and the situations the cloud gets into.

"rainonyourparade1"

You take the role of a cloud that ends up in several scenarios that must ruin the day for the unfortunate people below. The game is humorous and doesn't take itself too seriously. There are some superb homages to some classic games throughout the levels, these levels are executed superbly too. The sheer unpredictable nature of the game from level to level makes each level super fun and novel too.

Death's Door follows the trial and tribulations of a soul reaper, crow, as you progress through a series of puzzle-filled and action-packed levels. You play as a crow who has a job to get souls from creatures you encounter. Your job soon becomes a massive adventure.

As the crow reaper, you have assigned missions where you must collect the souls. The game starts in a sombre mood in a world lacking colour apart from the bright red sword you carry. However, before you know it the levels are filled with colours and you roam a plush world. The game does a fantastic job to tread between sombreness and being upbeat too.

"deathsdoor1"

The game starts with minimal instructions. I enjoyed this as it allows the player to explore and get used to the game. However, before you can do that, you have your first boss battle which turns into a hack and slash. You use the trusty bright red sword to kill the swathes of enemies that you encounter. The game shifts from dungeons that are a mix of hack and slash to dungeons full of puzzles. The game manages to make both gameplay elements enjoyable and challenging. Each level, puzzle and enemy get progressively more difficult, the instructions and assistance are kept to a minimum so it's up to the player to figure out the nuances of the game. While this seems subtle, it makes the game much richer, and the gameplay experience is gripping. I found it difficult to stop playing the game once I started.

The bosses are amazing; there is a real sense of accomplishment when you beat them. The bosses are a strange combination of weird, funny, and just plain odd. They are wonderfully rendered and full of detail.

"deathsdoor2"

I have to say I love the interconnected nature of each level. This gives a real feel that you are in a singular world and this helps to tie story elements too. Puzzles and unreachable sections become open as you progress through the game. The game does challenge the player to figure out what is available to do throughout the game.

The story is left purposely vague, and you will gather small morsels of information as you progress through levels and bosses. This helps to build up suspense, intrigue and tension. Each level helps to uncover more detail and builds the story into something of interest. The story has a mix of twists and turns with a beautiful soundtrack that helps to hammer the underlying theme.

"deathsdoor3"

The NPCs and your interactions act as the humour in the game and provide light-heartedness to the sombreness in the game, they also help drive the narration of the game too.

As this game is an indie game, there aren't any voice-overs. This is the only thing I think is missing for me, but the gameplay and story make up for it.

"deathsdoor4"

Death's Door combines a wonderful action-based game with a whole host of puzzles to solve. It has a brilliant mix of hack and slash, a beautifully crafted world that is intriguing and a joy to explore. Every aspect of the game has been designed impeccably, every small element including level design should be applauded. It's a wonderful game that excels in all elements: gameplay, story, music score and fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the game from start to end, I just found the game design and gameplay refreshing and such a joy.

I really hope that more and more games like this one keep coming.

Ps: Thank you Raw Fury for the opportunity of reviewing this game.

Overall:10/10
