She is the captain of her school's Basketball team, has a great group of friends and a loving family. Just as she begins preparing for her teams competitions, her Dad announces that he just got promoted and they will be packing up and relocating to America very soon. Devastated with the shocking news, the day comes when Lilico has to say goodbye to her best friends and the life she always knew. Now she must adjust to the American way of life, a new school, a second language and overcoming the many challenges she is sure to face. Including the school bully - Nala!

‘Bounce Back’ is the latest children’s graphic novel from the folks over at Feiwel & Friends. This story focuses on Lillico, a Japanese school girl whose life is turned upside down when her family relocates to Brooklyn, New York. Now in a different country and culture, Lillico must not only learn to adapt to the English language but also having to start all over again making friends. Inevitably she finds support in her new fashionable friend Nala and DBZ fan Henry. Through their friendship and support, as well as Lillico’s pet cat Nicco suddenly learning to talk - she starts gaining the confidence needed to try and join the school's Basketball team. It isn’t smooth sailing by any means, with complicated friendships, juggling new friends with teammates and trying not to fall under the pressure of being the new kid in school. There is alot going on in Lillico’s life, and this is sure to act as a life lesson for many young readers out there. Either to help them through similar situations or perhaps give them a different perspective on how it feels to be the new kid in class.

"bounceback_1"

There is plenty of excitement and drama to be had in this book, including a little budding romance as well. A great book to have for young athletes who love a good story. Or even for those that have more of an unstable living situation, that tend to transfer schools fairly often. It’s still a perfectly good read for those who don’t fall into either of those categories. You can quickly connect with the characters, it’s especially enjoyable for those that have an interest in anime, as the book has included references to both Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z.

"bounceback_2"

‘Bounce Back’ was both written and illustrated by author Misako Rocks! Who is the creator of other titles including ‘Biker Girl’ and ‘Rock and Roll Love’. A self-taught artist from a family of law-enforcement officials, Misako moved to the United States from Japan as a teenager and draws inspiration for this story through her own experiences. It's an extreme sports game that is geared; towards massively multiplayer online play.

"ridersrepublic1"

It's hard to illustrate the entirety of this, huge game but it's an extreme sport adrenaline rush that takes you biking down steep mountains, skiing and snowboarding lush snow-capped mountains to using your wingsuit to fly through canyons and all the other terrains in this game. It's an extreme sports game from the comfort of your couch. The game introduction gives you a taste of each; different sport, and you are, thrown into the deep end. One minute you are biking down a canyon before grabbing a jetpack to reach a snowy peak where you snowboard down the piste. It's all a bit crazy but lots of fun.

Graphically and visually, the game is stunning, the terrain is detailed, and the action-packed game has you on a journey in these vast locations. It has that; Ubisoft polish - menu, map, character, and game type looks superb and detailed. The map is this huge; events are dotted all over the place. Events help you earn stars to unlock more game types and upgrades. At times I found the sheer number of things on the map overbearing. It was hard to discern what were events and online players. It's chaotic at times but, I assume that's what they are going for; I suppose chaotic and extreme sports go hand in hand.

"ridersrepublic2"

Each game type (biking, snowing, skiing, wingsuit jetpack and wingsuit gliding) has its quirks and controls, which you will adapt to. I loved the wingsuit jetpack as it's something I haven't played in a sports game. It gives a wholly unique experience in this wonderfully crafted world. Primarily each game type is race-based where you aim to become the winner, which they have mixed things up by incorporating stunt-based competitions too. There is a star progression mode where you unlock more events as you complete more races/event types. The game has a huge variety of gameplay plus it's incorporated with a massively online experience too.

Like any modern sports game, there is a huge and wide variety of music that acts as a soundtrack to the gameplay. It's an impressive list of music that again illustrates how much thought has been put into giving the game the right vibe and feel.

"ridersrepublic3"

The game is slick from the first second you play it. The game has a clean user experience whilst maintaining a decent amount of information amongst the several game types. It's packed with lots of events and is lots of fun. If you need an adrenaline-based sports game with superb graphics; and a huge online element, this is right up your street.

Online gameplay can handle more than 50 players; there are online leaderboards and cups. There are 6x6 team PvP matchups.

The game runs at 4K 60 FPS on next-gen consoles and can support more than 50 players.

Overall: 7.5/10

Dr. Mag Traumer is a devoted scientist, who spends the vast majority of her time working away like a mad woman in her lab. It has all paid off however, as she has finally proven that her invention can save millions of dollars, be widely accessible to all hospitals and is bound to save countless lives. Her devotion however came at a cost, with a broken marriage and divorce papers still awaiting her final signature, Dr Traumer is unexpectedly hit with a sudden case of reality when her boss unjustly finishes her contract thus locking her out of her lab and all her hard work. Now she stands in a bar, telling everyone her story and downing liquor at a worrying rate. To the point that she awakens in the back seat of her car, a stranger at the wheel and suddenly on a European road trip. Just how does this story connect together, I guess only Issue 2 will have to clue us in.

"athingcalledtruth1_1"

From the same creator of ‘Alice in Leatherland’, Iolanda Zanfardino returns with a brand new series. ‘A Thing Called Truth’ is their latest comic title, this time being published by the people over at Image Comics. This five issue mini series has already been quoted as being ‘a chaotic LGBTQ+ road trip’. Having only read Issue One thus far, I can see where they are coming from. We follow a woman by the name of Dr. Mag Traumer, a scientist working for Doppel Krzuz Pharma. Having just completed numerous tests on her latest ground breaking project, she goes home knowing that her invention will have a positive impact on the world of medicine. However, as you expected, she gets dismissed from her job and all her work is kept by her employer under the rules of her contract. Mag soon ends up in a bar, drinking her sorrows away. The fact that she blacks out in her car, only to awaken to a stranger driving in a very unfamiliar environment.

So thus far we have met Mag, seen how she was wronged by her employer, her work stolen and now struggling to deal with it all. Her new ‘chauffeur’ however is still a mystery, but she appears brave to the point of idiotic, having jumped in someones car and taken off. Her reaction to finding the owner of said car in the back seat, suggests this girl really does not give two shits. And then ending the issue with the fact they are now on an unexplained road trip across Europe? Just where did they begin from and what on Earth is about to happen next?! I can not see how this is going to turn into a sudden romance.

"athingcalledtruth1_2"

According to the author, ‘A Thing Called Truth’ is set to be a high energy road trip adventure mini series, where the characters go on a soul searching journey so they can discover the ideal balance between devoting themselves fully to work, whilst still enjoying life to the fullest. Something that Mag is in desperate need of learning, after her failed marriage and sudden job loss. The artwork for this series is being provided by Elisa Romboli, who has also worked on ‘Alice in Leatherland’ and ‘Destiny, NY’. Both of which I have done reviews of in the past. You can see the similar artstyle between all three titles, and with both Elisa and Iolanda having worked together in the past, this is sure to be an interesting series nonetheless. It is also supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, as we are supposed to see some kind of love interest dynamic evolving between our two female lead characters in the coming issues.

‘A Thing Called Truth’ #1 will be available to buy today in your local comic book store, or indeed online from the publishers - Image Comics. It was quite an interesting first issue, one that certainly needs more explanation. However it is still worth picking up, especially if you enjoyed Iolanda’s previous published works.

‘A Thing Called Truth’ #2 is set to be released on December 8th.

It's a prequel to Camp Sunshine which was a cult hit. The game is a mix of dungeon crawler and story-driven RPG. This review is for the PC Steam version which, is available to purchase now; the console versions will be released in 2022.

"sunshinemanor1"

Sunshine Manor is a real throwback to the classic 8-bit dungeon RPG. At first, the bright and wonderfully detailed game looks fantastic and does the 8-bit genre justice. The game does have a spooky and eerie underlying theme that is ubiquitous. It's a heavily story-driven narrative that gives context to the Sunshine Manor and why you are there. You have that classic gameplay as you shift through numerous levels of the mansion. The top-down view with fantastically rendered levels gives me a sense of nostalgia but is used by many indie games still. The dungeons are detailed, and each dungeon has its theme. You play as Ada, and you have to go through a series of dungeons with clues to find out what happened in this mansion. Every dungeon, every character and every clue helps to uncover the mystery of the manor.

"sunshinemanor2"

The game has a timeless retro quality that is easy to pick up and play but has enough to keep you entertained for the duration of the game. It's dark and lots of fun; I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was.

"sunshinemanor3"

The game is a fantastic 8-bit horror RPG that has all the great elements of a 2D game. The storyline is intriguing and adds wonderfully scary and horror themes during the game. Level design is superb and the transition between ordinary and horror levels changes the tone of the game. I loved the unexpected jump scares throughout. The dialogue is superb, and the mix of game mechanics from general dungeon crawling to boss battles adds many variations in gameplay. I love how dark and full of horror the game is. The game executes every element with fantastic detail. I also love the general retro feel of the game.

Overall: 8/10

“Teens Power”

Hello everyone and welcome back once again to another subscription box review. As you may have guessed from the title above, today I am taking a look into what was included in the September edition of Nihon Box. Which ran with the theme of ‘Teens Power’, with items from such hit anime shows including Demon Slayer, Bleach, Tokyo Revengers and Kaguya Sama: Love is War. So let’s get the ball rolling with our usual Nihon Box infomercial.

Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to for what I find a very affordable price each month.

Like SoKawaii, the more months you pay upfront the cheaper the price for individual boxes will be. https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

3 Months is a single payment of €86.97, making each box €28.99, plus shipping costs.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Due to the latest European VAT legislation, the overall cost after shipping has increased slightly. The folks behind Nihon Box have done all they can to make this transition as simple as possible, so they have taken the necessary steps & changes in order to include the VAT directly in the subscription’s price. This change will normally be effective starting from the next renewal of your subscription, with the addition of the VAT in the final price (19% for Germany). And from August, as a small gift of appreciation to their overseas customers they will be including a 1000yen gift card to their YattaJapan.com store. As an idea of how much the charge has gone up, prior to August I was paying €32.89 a month. The new price I pay now is €40.45 a month, which is a nice increase but I believe the value is still there within the box. Now once it arrived in Ireland, I have been charged customs through An Post. Totalling just under €9euro on top of the €40.45 I pay each month, making this a rather expensive box at the moment. However this is all due to inflation and the recent customs changes within the EU.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxsep2021_1"

So let’s begin with our first item this month, from one of the biggest anime from the early 2000’s - Bleach. The show focused around Ichigo Kurosaki, who became a substitute Soul Reaper in order to save his family. Many of you would be very well versed in the happenings of this show, and rightly so! It is also about to make a comeback in the not too distant future, as they will be adapting the final arc of the manga - the ‘Thousand Year Blood War’. So in order to help us all cope with the franchise about to reach its final anime conclusion, Nihon Box has included this tissue box cover with Ichigo and Rukia on the front.

"nihonboxsep2021_2"

Next up is this bamboo fibre cup, featuring the main characters from the latest hit anime - ‘Tokyo Revengers’. An anime that features the lead character travelling backwards in time in order to save his friends from their untimely deaths and thus change the future for the better. Kind of sounds like Steins: Gate, but with middle school kids and a street gang. I have yet to start this show, but let me know in the comments below if my description was even close to the truth. Anyway this cup could either be used as such or simply as a bit of decoration, you choose. They have even hinted in the leaflet this month that Tokyo Revengers may be making a return in future boxes.

"nihonboxsep2021_3"

Now we move on to the traditional Japanese item for this month, with a ‘Tanuki Okiagari-Koboshi’. The Okiagari-Koboshi (起き上がり小法師, getting-up little boy) is a Japanese traditional doll. The toy is made from papier-mâché and is a roly-poly toy, designed so that its weight causes it to return to an upright position if it is knocked over. This one is made to look like a Tanuki, the same creature you would have seen in Studio Ghibli’s Pom Poko and the anime series ‘The Eccentric Family’. This item was hand made in Japan and is absolutely adorable.

"nihonboxsep2021_4"

Next up is our food item, with this packet of ‘ochazuke’ featuring Tanjiro and Nezuko from Demon Slayer. ‘Ochazuke is a simple Japanese dish made by pouring green tea, dashi, or hot water over cooked rice. Ochazuke provides a good way to use leftover rice as a quick snack because this dish is easy to make.’ This packet is in collaboration with Demon Slayer with its nori seaweed flavor and one of 18 collectable stickers inside the packet.

"nihonboxsep2021_5"

Next up is our Himouto! Umaru-chan item, in this incredibly vacuum packed pillow. This item features our main girl Lazy Umaru -chan as a super soft pillow. Made of ‘mochi-mochi’ material, making her very huggable, so you can just laze around with her and watch some anime. This series is a massive hit with everyone in the Nihon Box office, as they have said themselves that they have been wanting to include this franchise for quite some time.

"nihonboxsep2021_6"

Our figure for this month comes from the ‘Kaguya-sama: Love is War’ series, featuring Shinomiya Kaguya herself in her school outfit. This figure is from the Coreful Figure line from Taito, and features Shinomiya in her school uniform while placing a cute flower barrette in her hair! This figure was probably quite popular in the arcade machines in Japan when it was first released, its a good quality figure, sturdy base and has a simple, but elegant pose. Definitely one to buy for fans of the show.

"nihonboxsep2021_7"

And lastly we have the 1000 Yen Yatta Japan gift card, that can be used on their online store. However I must point out that these gift cards all expire at the end of 2021 and you can only use one per order over on their website. Something I only learned recently when placing my very first order. Now I don’t know if they will continue to include the GiftCards in every box from now on, or is this simply until the new year? Either way, it’s worth checking it out and availing of their new venture with Yatta Japan - https://www.yattajapan.com/

So there we have it everyone, that was September’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from Demon Slayer, Tokyo Revengers and the classic shónen series Bleach making a comeback. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Teens Power”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about the raccoon looking animal - tanuki. A native species to Japan, these animals have strong roots in Japanese mythology and even certain anime. Including the movie Pom Poko from Studio Ghibli. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

For more information on how you can order your own box, look to the top of this review and head over to the link below so you can sign up today!

https://www.nihonbox.com/en
Created By: Jun Mayuzuki

Directed By: Ayumu Watanabe

Studio: Wit Studio

Episode Count: 1 - 12

Audio: Japanese, English

Subtitles: English

Certification: 12 (BBFC)

Format: BluRay

Licensed By: MVM Entertainment

Release Date: Available Now

Akira Tachibana is a young high school student who works part time at a family restaurant. This is the story of how she found this job, quit the track team and fell in love with her struggling, forty five year old divorced manager. All after a chance encounter during a heavy rainfall, Akira’s life takes a new direction ‘ After the Rain’.

‘After the Rain’ is a coming of age story for injured athlete Akira Tachibana. Having suffered a serious injury that has taken her away from the running track, Tachibana left her team behind and instead dedicated herself to her new part time job. Not long into her recovery, she walks into a random family restaurant to escape a sudden downpour of rain. Whilst waiting inside, she is served a cup of coffee by the manager - Masami Kondo. Through a simple magic trick and a generous act of kindness, Tachibana becomes infatuated with the man. Leading her down the path to working in the same restaurant as him. Through their shared work schedule, Tachibana’s feelings build upto the point that she confesses to him.

Kondo on the other hand is 45 years old, is a divorced man and has a young son in middle school. He is a bit uncertain in himself, is constantly apologising for the slightest thing and truly lives by the rule - that the customer is always right. So much so, there is little to no respect for him from the rest of the staff. Outside of work, he has struggled to continue his writing as he once dreamed of being a published author. Can Tachibana and Kondo help one another realise their dreams and get back on the path to achieving them? Or will they forever be stuck in the rain?

This really is a coming of age story, both for Tachibana and Kondo. From Tachibana’s viewpoint as she encounters her first love after the bitter heartbreak of leaving her track team behind. Now feeling a bit isolated, as her friends continue training for their track meet, Tachibana focuses on her new job and trying to suddenly get to know her boss more. For Kondo, we see many flashbacks into his past, from a college student focussed on his writing, to his failed marriage and living the life of a secluded single man. He is a bit of a mess, as we can see from his apartment alone. He doesn’t seem interested in pursuing his ex wife, or a new relationship. Yet kind of falls in line, when he mistakenly agrees to meet up with Tachibana outside of work. Which gives her false hope, kind of stringing the young girl along a bit. Yet he seems to be completely unaware of this, believing that she can not possibly be in love with him as he is. The two do strike a mutual friendship, and perhaps over time they may grow closer together once Tachibana gets a few years older. College may change her, add some maturity, who knows? At the moment, these two lost souls just need someone to push them a little back on track towards their passions.

‘After the Rain’ is a Japanese manga series created and illustrated by Jun Mayuzuki. Natsuo Fuji is just your typical high school boy, who has a massive crush on his teacher Ms Tachibana. Since there is zero chance he will ever get to go out with her, he agrees to attend a mixer with his friends in order to meet some cute girls. Whilst out he gets talking to Rui, a quiet but straight talking girl who persuades him to follow her home to do the ‘deed’. Thinking that they will never see one another again, Natsuo returns home to the news that his widowed father is getting remarried and she is on the way over with her two daughters - Rui and Ms Hina Tachibana. Let this chaotic new family dynamic begin, as Natsuo must learn to live with the woman he lost his virginity to and the one he wishes he could sleep with!

Well this is an anime that is just filled with drama and questions around romance within blended families and the morals that surround them. It initially began as Natuso having a long standing crush for his teacher Ms Hina Tachibana. In order to try and get past his one sided romance, he ended up sleeping with Rui, who inevitably ended up being the teacher's younger sister. As fate would have it, they all ended up under the one roof when their single parents remarried thus creating this incredibly complicated family. Following the initial revelation, the show then turns direction into Natuso and Rui keeping their first ‘encounter’ a secret from everyone and Natsuo also trying to resist all urges to pounce on Hina. The story further develops when Hina’s secret relationship is exposed, Natsuo acts upon his feelings, Hina attempts to play the older sister and obviously Rui ends up transferring to the same school.

So there is clearly a reason this show is marked as an 18 classification, both for the nature of the story and the numerous naked scenes included. It’s a pretty raunchy show at times and has a pretty narrow audience, however even though the premise of the show will be too much for many people to overlook - the character development, plot progression and the overall conclusion of the show is pretty well thought out! I can not falter the script whatsoever, it always keeps both feet in reality with its character reactions and inevitable consequences. We see the challenges that come about when step siblings develop romantic feelings for one another, normal high school antics, a school trip and even Natsuo thinking about his career as he throws himself back into his writing again towards the end thanks to the members of the Literature Club. Hina on the other hand is walking a tightrope, as her relationship to a married man is exposed and later we see how the cycle is repeating itself once more when the origins of which are revealed. With Hina now in the opposite role, her career ends on a cliff edge as well when a picture of her school trip antics lands on the Principal's desk. Its an inevitable conclusion to the series, a sad one at that but one that is more realistic than the hopeful happily ever after many would have been expecting from the series. As to if the anime’s ending is the same as how the manga series ended, I’m unsure as the manga concluded over a year after the anime did.

Speaking of which, the manga was created by Kei Sasuga, the same author behind the one shot harem romance ‘GE - Good Ending’. The ‘Domestic Girlfriend’ manga ran in Weekly Shónen Magazine from 2014 upto just last year in 2020, with a total of 28 volumes released with 11 extra chapters bundled together in one last volume. The English translation is being handled by Kodansha USA, with the volumes only being available in a digital format. The anime adaptation was then aired in 2019, with a total of 12 episodes all handled by studio Diomedéa. The same studio behind ‘My Girlfriend is Shobitch’, ‘Girlish Number’, ‘Squid Girl’ and ‘Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren’t They?’. This anime release is being handled by the dedicated team over at MVM Entertainment, giving it a BluRay only release.
