The next generation of consoles is here, the PS5 is Sony's next-generation console.

"ps5_1"

First impressions of the PS5 while unboxing and moving the box is the sheer weight of the PS5, it's a heavy console (Blu-Ray version) weighing in at 4.5kg (9.9 lbs) and the digital version comes in at 3.9kg (8.6lb). The contents of the PS5 box is minimal with a console, a power lead, controller and HDMI included.

"PS5_6"

As I unboxed the console, two things were very striking, the console design and the controller design. The console is an impressive unit and is huge but the sleek design. It's the main unit is a black glossy plastic that has vents at the back for cooling and air circulation, this is offset by two white plates that have the Playstation symbols embossed on the inside. The final piece is a stand that allows for the PS5 to be used in standing or on its side. The design isn't uniform as the unit goes from a thin base to widening top when standing up with the white plates diverging at the top. The design is reminiscent of a building design as opposed to a console, it looks like a building that has been made into a console. The console isn't one for being hidden in a TV stand, I think it's been purposely designed to stand with the use of the white plates to make it stand out. AV equipment is generally black so this will contrast whatever AV equipment you have. Another thing to note is that you may find it to be a tight fit in your TV stand as it's big and wide. Despite the sheer size, the two-tone colour design, I'm growing to like this big impressive piece of tech. I'm still coming to terms on how massive it is. I assume Sony went for the statement piece of art in your living room/bedroom should be a PS5. Hidden in the front of the main console unit is a 3 USB-A, USB-C port, ethernet port, WIFI, eject (BLU-Ray) version and power button. The power button and eject button aren't the same sizes so no more turning the console off by mistake.

"PS5_3"

The next piece of kit you will want to get your hands on is the new PS5 dualsense controller. It has the same two-tone effect going on, the controller is slightly longer and slightly heavier than the PS4 controllers. It has a translucent d-pad and buttons, built-in mic, speaker, touchpad with RGB lighting, motion feedback, create button, options button, two dual shock controllers, longer L2 and R2 triggers with extra haptic feedback. A huge emphasis has been placed on the controller as being the next part of innovation for the PS5. The additional haptic feedback in the triggers that allow for touch-sensitive use of the controller means that this will allow for gamers and developers to use it. I will delve into the additional haptic feedback as part of reviews of the games. The charging port is a USB-C.

"PS5_4"

How does the new tech fair up in the gameplay experience? Once I started the console, the sheer speed and quickness of every element of the console are impressive. The game boot times are drastically reduced and once the games started the loads are dramatically reduced. The console from boot to login is about 20 seconds and then seamless when logged in. To load Spider-Man: Miles Morales approx 15 seconds and very little noticeable load times. The console is a pure joy to play, the quickness and general responsiveness is what makes the PS5 a winner. The controller and extra haptic feedback make the whole experience more immersive and just consume you in the game. Sony has delivered on the next generation aspects of speed, design and the next era of gaming consoles. The next-generation games will take some more time to be developed and released but the speed and architectural improvements make this console a worthy purchase. The SSD, the 4K gaming and overall improvements are visible within seconds of turning the console on. Sound is clear and even more vibrant, all in all, the console is very impressive.

The new PS5 dualsense controller and Astro's Playroom go hand in hand, Astro's Playroom is an extended demo for the new dualsense PS5 controller. It highlights the haptics, adaptive triggers, the built-in microphone and what we can expect from developers in the future when building games for the PS5. Astro's Playroom is an impressive game in its own right too.

"dualsense"

The dualsense comes in two-tone colour, it's slightly bigger and longer than the PS4 controller thought fits in your hand better and provides a better feel in the hand. The button layout is identical on both controllers apart from the addition of a mute button below the PS button on the PS5 controller. The next generation aspects of the controller are new haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. These elements are showcased in the wonderfully colourful and free game Astro's Playroom developed by ASOBI Team which is a 3D puzzle/platformer which takes a trip down nostalgia lane. The key theme of Astro's Playroom is the evolution of the Playstation which underpins all the level design, puzzles and collectables.

"astrosplayground1"

The entire game is to showcase the unique PS5 dualsense controller. Almost immediately, the haptic feedback and sense of what the controller has to offer is evident. The haptic feedback kicks in as you wade through water, sand, mud, grass and jungles. Each terrain gives the player a different sensation and it's surprisingly immersive. You can feel the resistance and differing levels of friction in each section of every level. The next big feature being touted is the adaptive triggers, the adaptive triggers are pressure sensitive. The varying degree of force you use on the triggers will mean the character in-game will expend the equivalent force. The adaptive triggers provide similar feedback when a character is pushing or pulling an item in the game, the triggers provide resistance back too. Again, this may seem like a minor thing but the feel and sensation are immersive and adds another layer to the gaming experience. In elements of Astro's Playroom, you do feel as if you are pulling items off the floor. The in-game tutorial describes what each control does and how to use it, it is usually followed by a gaming section where you get to explore these new controls.

"astrosplayground2"

The dualsense features a touchpad with RGB LEDs around it, the touchpad feels more responsive and the lights add another feature to the impressive array of features. The controller is charged via USB-C port and has a bigger built-in battery for the extra features of the dualsense. I was charging the controller every 2 days or so but you don't need to buy extra batteries which is a plus. The controller has a big built-in mic and a speaker as well, the dualsense has a 3.5mm port for mics too.

"astrosplayground3"

If you take Astro's Playroom as a stand-alone game without it being a vehicle to show off the dualsense controller. It's a fun, innovative and creative platform that has moments where it's tough and challenging. The level design is superb and the multi-faceted gameplay, changing form and the ability to become different creatures is cool. It has a big brash and bright colours too. The sound from the game is superb, it also shows that PS5 has an upgrade in audio quality. Astro's Playroom is quite the platformer, it's varied and engaging which I wasn't expecting but I was more than pleasantly surprised. If you are a fan of platformers and puzzle games, you will enjoy this.

It will be interesting to see how developers will use the controller in future games but the future looks promising. The dualsense is a real innovation and next-gen.

Best of all Astro's Playroom comes preinstalled with the PS5 for free.

As part of the new PS5, the User Interface and navigation has received an update too, there are still of the similar Sony menu structures and tabs. However, the main log is more a stripped-back tiled affair with an emphasis on sharing and progress in the game via pop up-cards. Pop-up cards give updates on game progression and trophy progression The primary noticeable feature of the interface is responsiveness to the user interface and better integration into the PS store. There is a noticeable difference between the PS4 and PS5 UI, it's a case of night and day. It's clean, slick and a huge leap forward from the last one.

"PS5_8"

PS5 comes with a superfast 825GB hard-drive with only 667GB of usable space, any game loaded on the main SSD will run lightning quick. There is an expansion port to extend the capacity of the PS5. You will have to manage what you store on the internal drive or your expanded drive. The trade-off is speed versus capacity is worth it, I'd prefer less space with enhanced performance. Reduced load times are underrated.

"PS5_9"

The PS5 has been mooted to have more than 99% backward compatibility with the PS4 library. I tried the physical copy of Bloodborne and Ghosts of Tsushima digital download to test it. Starting with Bloodborne I installed the game from the disc drive, in terms of gameplay it plays exactly like the PS4 copy. I did notice the game did load quicker than PS4 version and load between sections wasn't as noticeable, however, the game isn't optimised for PS5 but the experience is fluid and solid. Ghosts was a digital download from the library and the comparison between both systems was similar in-game boot and load times, the developers did a fantastic job to optimise Ghosts for PS4. Gameplay and visuals are superb and I can't complain one bit with the backward compatibility. With access to all the previous content in my PS4 library, it's super easy to download and play your favourites again.

"PS5_11"

Over the last few days, I have been doing a lot of content from my library and new games, I have noticed a drastic improvement on network speeds via WIFI. The WIFI performance is quick and updates (console and games) have been seamless and rapid.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is the latest adventure of Sackboy on the Playstation, this time he returns to a fully 3D world akin to Super Mario World, but with all the paraphernalia that is associated with Little Big Planet. This 3D world is constructed of various types of fabric, cloth and crafting items. Sackboy follows the well-trodden path of the world-based sections of 3D platformers. Each world has a set of levels that follows a certain theme. The game has the standard and generic plot of good versus evil. In this instance, involving an epic quest in which Sackboy must journey through a series of worlds. The presentation and direction do help drive a firm narrative through the game.

"sackboyadventure1"

Sackboy and the worlds in 3D do look exquisite, the level design is done superbly well with a mix of levels. Levels vary from speed runs to your standard side-scrolling linear platform levels. The levels themself use colour, the soundtrack (which is amazing) and this stitched together feel to bring this game to life. Each element from the bad guys, to the puzzles and Sackboy, complement the levels well. The use of actors and some fantastic voice-overs is to be noted. The soundtrack and voice acting add to the level's atmosphere and shows the creativity of designers. The level design and storyline have a super polish feel and the cute design of the world contrasts with the darkness of the enemies in the game. There is a whole raft of licenced music in the game. The game is geared towards family but there are enough elements to keep every player occupied.

"sackboyadventure2"

The game is pure platformer goodness that doesn't require a whole lot to learn from a mechanics point of view. The game is an exploration of the Little Big Planet world in 3D, this is a real experience of Sackboy being transferred into this sumptuous 3D world that fits the character so well. Thematically and game design is exactly what seems to make sense for Sackboy and this wondrous world. It's a dreamy adventure. I did find the game not to be particularly difficult as apart from a few time trials. It's learning curve is low.

4 player local co-op play is available, but I haven't been able to play more than a single player. Online multiplayer will be available via a patch coming by the end of 2020. The game supports 4k at 60 fps too.

"sackboyadventure3"

The game is a resurrection of the 3D platformer which is rarely explored, it's like a reboot for Sackboy for modern generation consoles and this makes a good stab of getting the gameplay, world, soundtrack and voice acting into a cohesive story and in turn a game. Sackboy is geared a bit more towards younger ages but I had lots of fun and the licensed music was a pleasant surprise. There are lots to like but a bit too family-friendly for me but I'm not the target audience.

[gallery ids="205613,205617,205616,205615,205614"]

It will be interesting to see how developers will use the controller in future games but the future looks promising. The dualsense is a real innovation and next-gen.

Best of all Astro's Playroom comes preinstalled with the PS5 for free.

The football (soccer) season is in full swing in Europe, and this means the next version of FIFA. FIFA 23 will be on the mind of footie fans throughout the world. FIFA is the quintessential football game these days; there isn't any competition at the moment. However, being the go-to football game isn't the blessing it once was, and in this iteration, it's hard to see where, improvements can be made until a rebuild takes place. As a football fan, I do; look forward to seeing what FIFA brings, but there has been a small iterative update each year as opposed to a revolution. As with any football game, people want the latest team updates for their favourite teams. This is also the last outing of the current FIFA franchise from EA, as the branding rights no longer belong to EA.

The game changer for me is the Hypermotion2 technology which gives an additional sense of realism to an already super realistic game. The player animations and visual fidelity are superb. Players seem to run more fluidly, and the interaction and jostling are even more realistic. A lot of these minor tweaks have enhanced the game. The player AI is solid, and the various levels of the challenge will give everyone something. Every level of player is catered for.

"fifa23_1"

There is a sleeker ball control mechanic and player animations, there does seem to be better team AI, and the game does have a solid flow. Players and their likenesses are captured with amazing detail. In general, game mechanics are improved, but there are no massive overhauls; the game does play better and is more responsive.

I mean, the presentation on FIFA has never been an issue, but it's been improved even more. FIFA 23 has cross-play enabled, too, so you can play with friends on the same generation of consoles, i.e. Playstation 4 can play Xbox One players and so on.

"fifa23_2"

Women's club teams have been added as well, increasing the playable teams significantly.

The usuals can be expected: the UI is polished, and the presentation is superb, every; element from icons to players has the FIFA polish. A banging soundtrack has been included.

In reality, it's difficult to feel all these elements straight off in your first few games. Online games and matchmaking are superb; the net code means finding games is easy, and there are very few issues when games are being played. I spend the majority of my time playing Seasons or Volta online, so; I would notice this.

FIFA is all about licences, and they are all there for your favourite and despised teams alike. The licences are another standout feature that means people come back to FIFA.

"fifa23_3"

FIFA is stacked with game modes such as Career Mode, Pro Clubs, Volta, Online Modes and FUT, just to mention a few of the most popular ones. I can't do them all justice in the one review, but the game is packed to the seams.

The last incarnation of FIFA, FIFA 23, is graphically stunning and brings the up-to-date rosters to everyone. The Hypermotion2 technology has brought on visual fidelity in leaps and bounds, the game; just is smoother. The game is more of a simulation football game than in previous versions.

"fifa23_4"

The addition of xG and enhanced replays is super slick and makes reliving your goals even more amazing. Cross-play is a huge bonus. Also, the introduction of women's club teams too. The game plays more like a simulation with tons of modes, including an online, career mode and ultimate team too, which will keep you more than occupied.

It's a solid send-off to the biggest football game of our generation.

Overall: 8/10

We have a post from July (http://comicbuzz.com/playstation-plus-updates-what-to-look-forward-to/) that covers each of the tiers in more detail and what to expect.

I want to follow up on what I uncovered and what I have; liked about the new Playstation Plus updates. It must be noted that there are new games constantly being added each month to each tier. The premium and extra tiers have the same PS4 and PS5 catalogues of games. PS1, PS2, and PS3 games are in the premium tier. The tiers will come down to how much of the older games you want more than anything else apart from the Trial mode, which I think is well worth it.

For me, the Game Trial mode in the premium tier is an amazing feature that lets you try a complete game for a whole two hours. Realistically this gives you some confidence that you will like the game before you, or you can try a genre of game that you wouldn't have previously played. There are; a few notable games that I tried that I was interested in after playing the complete game which otherwise I have ignored. This premium feature is a game changer for me. It really enhances the Playstation Plus experience. There is a limited amount of trial games at the moment. Oh, and you get to keep trophy progress, too, from the trial.

"psplus"

I have found a significant improvement in the Cloud Streaming, and whilst it's not 100% perfect. It's much improved from the initial release in June, though not every game is available for Cloud Streaming. Demon's Souls is the next-generation version and reboot built from the ground up of the PS3 classic. I'm just putting this out there, I haven't played the PS3 version, it's one of the PS consoles I didn't get. Demon's Souls is brand new to me. I don't have any nostalgic baggage of playing the game though it's considered a classic. I have played Bloodbourne though I will be my reference point for aspects of my game review. Demon's Souls is a third-person action RPG that is considered one of the hardest games.

"demons_

For those familiar with the PS3 version, this game looks like a beautifully updated version of the PS3 game. I usually quickly skip through the character creation introduction, but I did spend time on it and marvelled at the rendering of the faces. The game has several classes that you can create your custom character from - Knight, Thief, Magician, and Wanderer to name a few. Gameplay involves navigating quite a linear path to kill a host of monsters. An increasing presence of demons has plagued the world and must be stopped. The game is unforgiving in many ways, while the controls are simple, the player is required to use their endurance effectively to strategically kill enemies while ensuring you don't die. An all-out attack approach in Demon's Souls will lead to many deaths where entire sections of the game must be replayed. You will die over and over.

"demons_souls_2"

It's slick and polished from the very first frame of the game through its entirety. Every creature, beast and monster you meet throughout the game looks stunning. Boss enemies (some are huge) rendered in meticulous detail, each gruesome and gory detail is brought to life. The environments vary from a mixture of ruined castles, keeps, moats, fields and decaying buildings. The use of light and shading lends itself another sense of the unknown to the player. Enemies are hiding in the shadows and creep up on you as you progress through each level. It has the right mix of difficulty, level progression, levelling up mixed in with a beautiful environment and sound to boot. It has the feel of a game that has been lovingly built up and each aspect of the gameplay while infuriating (when you die) make Demon's Souls a fantastic journey.

Demon Souls looks amazing in 4K, the game supports 4K 30fps in cinematic mode and 1440p upscaled to 4K at 60fps (dynamic 4k). Demon's Souls has both PVP and Co-op modes available that are unlocked early in the game. You can play with friends or other Souls players.

"demons_souls_3"

Demon's Souls is the best release title for the PS5. It looks amazing and plays just as well. While some players will find the game very difficult, it requires time and dedication to get to most of this game. It's not a lie, it's a challenge but tons of fun. There is a huge emphasis on strategy, levelling up and being wary of enemies. The bosses are fantastic, and they get tougher as you progress the game. You will die a lot, but you just need to persist. Demon's Souls is exciting, tough but it is a fantastic must own launch title. Demon's Souls the launch title to beat all launch titles

[gallery ids="205613,205617,205616,205615,205614"]

It will be interesting to see how developers will use the controller in future games but the future looks promising. The dualsense is a real innovation and next-gen.

Best of all Astro's Playroom comes preinstalled with the PS5 for free.
