The new PS5 dualsense controller and Astro's Playroom go hand in hand, Astro's Playroom is an extended demo for the new dualsense PS5 controller. It highlights the haptics, adaptive triggers, the built-in microphone and what we can expect from developers in the future when building games for the PS5. Astro's Playroom is an impressive game in its own right too.

"dualsense"

The dualsense comes in two-tone colour, it's slightly bigger and longer than the PS4 controller thought fits in your hand better and provides a better feel in the hand. The button layout is identical on both controllers apart from the addition of a mute button below the PS button on the PS5 controller. The next generation aspects of the controller are new haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. These elements are showcased in the wonderfully colourful and free game Astro's Playroom developed by ASOBI Team which is a 3D puzzle/platformer which takes a trip down nostalgia lane. The key theme of Astro's Playroom is the evolution of the Playstation which underpins all the level design, puzzles and collectables.

"astrosplayground1"

The entire game is to showcase the unique PS5 dualsense controller. Almost immediately, the haptic feedback and sense of what the controller has to offer is evident. The haptic feedback kicks in as you wade through water, sand, mud, grass and jungles. Each terrain gives the player a different sensation and it's surprisingly immersive. You can feel the resistance and differing levels of friction in each section of every level. The next big feature being touted is the adaptive triggers, the adaptive triggers are pressure sensitive. The varying degree of force you use on the triggers will mean the character in-game will expend the equivalent force. The adaptive triggers provide similar feedback when a character is pushing or pulling an item in the game, the triggers provide resistance back too. Again, this may seem like a minor thing but the feel and sensation are immersive and adds another layer to the gaming experience. In elements of Astro's Playroom, you do feel as if you are pulling items off the floor. The in-game tutorial describes what each control does and how to use it, it is usually followed by a gaming section where you get to explore these new controls.

"astrosplayground2"

The dualsense features a touchpad with RGB LEDs around it, the touchpad feels more responsive and the lights add another feature to the impressive array of features. The controller is charged via USB-C port and has a bigger built-in battery for the extra features of the dualsense. I was charging the controller every 2 days or so but you don't need to buy extra batteries which is a plus. The controller has a big built-in mic and a speaker as well, the dualsense has a 3.5mm port for mics too.

"astrosplayground3"

If you take Astro's Playroom as a stand-alone game without it being a vehicle to show off the dualsense controller. It's a fun, innovative and creative platform that has moments where it's tough and challenging. The level design is superb and the multi-faceted gameplay, changing form and the ability to become different creatures is cool. It has a big brash and bright colours too. The sound from the game is superb, it also shows that PS5 has an upgrade in audio quality. Astro's Playroom is quite the platformer, it's varied and engaging which I wasn't expecting but I was more than pleasantly surprised. If you are a fan of platformers and puzzle games, you will enjoy this.

It will be interesting to see how developers will use the controller in future games but the future looks promising. The dualsense is a real innovation and next-gen.

Best of all Astro's Playroom comes preinstalled with the PS5 for free.

Each chapter of the comic book contains levels that are randomly generated full of baddies and challenges to navigate. Fury Unleashed is a mix of an old skool shooter like Metal Slug and a platformer. Its default settings are set to hard difficulty. This can be changed for those who don't enjoy a tough roguelite game. The game can be played in either solo or co-op mode, I haven't had the chance to play it in co-op mode but would love to. The game includes a few key features that enhance the game and its playability. The game can be played as you desire, you can meticulously go through each chapter or you can be all out and attack the levels if you take the second approach you are rewarded with higher combos which in turn give you more ink (game currency) and healables. In turn, gaining ink and levelling up your character allows you to spend skill points that allow you to enhance your skills and attributes. This allows you to complement your playstyle as you see fit and as this game is tough, gaining skills and upgrading your character is required no matter which plays style you use.

"furyunleashed_1"

The gameplay consists of battling, shooting, stomping, and meleeing through a varying number of frames in each level, you must navigate to the exit point of each level. The goal is to get through each level to face an end of the comic boss who is usually a huge nasty that occupies the majority of the screen. In the game you gain ink by killing enemies and beating challenges, the ink allows you to purchase in-game items that help you beat the game. More ink can be gained by chaining combos and killing enemies in quick succession too. You can buy new melee and guns throughout the game, each item having its pros and cons, you can choose which suit your style of play. The game action, enemies and levels flow well, the feeling of killing enemies and navigating the levels is smooth, action-packed and tons of fun. As you progress further into the game, the boss battles become more epic. The violence and gore are well suited for the game, there is huge fun and enjoyable element to the randomly generated levels as you must reply levels, it removes any sense of repetitiveness and just means every playthrough is unique.

"furyunleashed_2"

On the hard setting alone, the game is fiendishly tough, but every level completion is a huge achievement. It mixes the right amount of platformer and shoot 'em up. From the get-go, it's lots of fun and easy to pick up and play but hard to master which are usually the signs of the best games. It incorporates lots of elements like levelling up, character loadout and customisation with a beautiful game with lots of action. It's a sheer joy to play.

Overall: 9/10

Developer: Paul Cuisset

Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, PlayStation 4 (Reviewed), Xbox One

Genre: Action, Adventure

Publisher: Microids
Flashback is the classic sci-fi platform adventurer from 1992, It was available on the Amiga, Megadrive and SNES just to name a few platforms. It has been brought back in the classic form which looks identical to the original version and an upgraded polished with a few extra features. The original Flashback was a standout title when first released, it was a mix of puzzle, platformer set in a sci-fi era. It was known for being extremely difficult and challenging. It stood out from the crowd between the mix of graphics, game design and sci-fi themes.

"Flashback_JungleStart_2018"

The 25th-anniversary edition brings it back in its original glory with all the same challenges, it's tough and frustrating. I think the most obvious thing that will hit you as a gamer is the level of precision required to play the game, for a modern gamer, you will find the controls clunky and the majority of the gameplay is affected by this. There is a real frustration that the character doesn't react to your commands, this is where the learning curve is quite extreme. As there are two versions of the game original and the updated version, you will find tutorials and the ability to rewind gameplay in the updated version, the original isn't forgiving at all. From my perspective, the insane level of difficulty and the very realistic character design and movement made this a stand out game. The addition of the sci-fi elements really combined the game fantastically well. For someone not travelling down nostalgia lane, I would recommend the updated version as the rewind and tutorials will make the game more enjoyable and reduce the learning curve of the game. It makes it a less frustrating experience. Those who want to bathe in nostalgia should play the original version.

"Flashback_JungleStart_1993"

The game level design is intriguing (when the game was made), the levels consist of a series of frames connected in a sequence, in essence, a series of stills which you navigate but the interesting aspect are enemies can also traverse the series of frames too and follow you which wouldn't happen in other games around this time from what I can remember. Flashback has a key number of items that made it unique and ultimately very successful - game design, realistic movement, difficulty level and the transition from different stages in each level.

"Flashback_2018_DeathTower"

It's hard to judge Flashback against the current crop of similar titles, it was made in a different era and gaming landscape. It does a lot well but from a modern gaming perspective even I found controls clunky and responsive which was frustrating. Modern games are more complex due hardware and software updates and the progression of software over the last 20 years. Flashback is enjoyable but very challenging, I really enjoyed it from a nostalgic perspective and to see how it compares to the modern game however it does show it's age. If you are looking for a nostalgic kick this an excellent game. I'm not sure if modern gamers will derive the same feeling of warmth from playing it. I would still recommend a play-through, it's a classic.

Overall: 7/10

Flashback 25th Year Anniversary Review
Conrad B.

Developer: Playtonic Games

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One (Reviewed)

Genre: Adventure, Indie

Publisher: Team17 Digital Ltd

Yooka-Laylee is a bright, colourful side-scrolling platform that has a resemblance to Banjo-Koozie and Donkey Kong Country. While there is some resemblance in the gameplay and design, there is a lot more to Yooka-Laylee with the additions of potions and some clever game mechanics. It's a beautifully crafted game that will hold your attention for many an hour. The main game is a 2.5D side-scrolling platformer, it's a throwback to old platforms but spruced graphics, design and layout.

Yooka-Laylee is set in the world of Bee-Kind from Capital B, there is an emphasis on bees and bee-related puns throughout the game, you play as Yooka, the chameleon with Laylee the bat sidekick. You roll, jump and crash the many levels of Bee-Kind to free bees from Capital B to bring normalcy back to Bee-Kind. Your beetalion will increase as you free the bees
Yooka-Laylee strangely starts you off the final level, the impossible lair, the level is impossible to finish at this stage but you get a sense of the gameplay and what you will see as you play through the levels. It's a shock to the system and was confused when I failed epically but soon got my bearings as to what was happening.

"yookalayleeand1"

The level design is fantastic with a good mix of puzzles, difficulty level and enough hidden items to make you explore the levels. Level themes vary as you progress through the world and you collect quills (think coins in Mario) to get bonuses and level up your character via potions. TWIT coins are required to progress through paywalls in the world to unlock other parts of the world. Look and feel of the levels are vibrant, an emphasis on bee-related paraphernalia is throughout the level world. Bees, honey, hives etc.

"yookalaylee2"

Like any good platformer, level and puzzle difficulty increase your progress through the game. The introduction of game mechanics is done well, this is done a steady pace throughout the game, you get an understanding of each feature by just playing level, no need for a complex manual or tons of tutorials.
Each level does require a thorough playthrough as TWIT coins are required to unlock newer areas in the world, on the whole, this well done but I have found certain levels tricky to find all the coins.

"yookalaylee3"

Gameplay is based on the old school classic side-scrolling platformer, Yooka-Layee as a combo can glide and crush items and enemies if your partner flies away you lose these abilities. Check points allow your loyal comrade to come back to your side. Navigating and passing each puzzle is rewarding, there is a sense of achievement and inherent feeling of accomplishment too. It's a wonderfully enjoyable game with loads to do and a fantastic game mechanics. The controls are smooth and responsive, you never feel a sense that you aren't in control of your character. This level of control is required in certain parts of the game where a multitude of level design components are placed together, where you have to chain rolling, killing/avoiding enemies and gliding from floating platforms. The game flourishes in wonderful emphasis on solid platform gaming with great level design.

Yooka-Laylee is a fantastic platformer and offers an immersive gaming experience, it provides a decent learning curve with enough difficulty to keep you playing. There are lots of surprises and twists and turns throughout. The game is ultimately fun and some quirky potions add to a sense of playfulness in the game. It brings the world of platformers back to another generation of players. It's one of the best platformers I have played in a long time.

Overall: 9/10

Developer: Game Freak inc.

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One (Reviewed), Switch

Genre: Action, Adventure

Published by: Rising Star Games

Giga Wrecker Alt. is a 2D platformer set in the near future where robots have taken over the world. The near future dystopian world sets the backdrop of the game. The theme of ravaging robots roaming the Earth is overriding and present throughout the whole game. Backgrounds use the robotic and a world full of dismay. Cybernetic and robots are everywhere, you feel you are in a world devoid of humans. You play as Reika, the saviour, your special abilities will help guide you through lots of levels, puzzles and lots of action too.

"gigawreckeralt1"

In spite of the bleakness of the subject matter, the game uses bright backgrounds and colours to bring a dying world to life. This bright contrast of visual plays well of the dark themes of the game and highlights the world you are in. There is repetitive use of similar backgrounds but that gives a sense of unending robot world and a sense of a loss of the world. It isn't all grim though, a useful aid and helpful terminals will help guide you through the world. A lot to the world is destructible and you have the ability to use the world around you as weapons, as you progress you gain more abilities which you need to solve more complex levels. This is a really clever use of both character development and level design, the powers you acquire both you navigate puzzles too. A fantastic array of enemies bring the action element and a sense of danger to the game. As your character evolves, you use your powers in ingenious ways to solve riddles and puzzle. You will use abilities to overcome bigger and more sinister enemies.

"gigawreckeralt2"
The combination of well-designed puzzles, intriguing gameplay and character evolution are the strongest elements. I have to say I found some the puzzles quite tough that may the game even more enjoyable, the game grows as you play and each piece neatly fits into each other, there is a sense of cohesion throughout. I liked that each aspect of gameplay and puzzle solving leads to more complex puzzles. Character animation is slick and fluid, the game is very well crafted, in terms of visuals I can't critique much. However, I found that dialogue sections required excessive pushing of buttons to skip and hindered the game in places. Also, I found some of the level design and use of backgrounds just a bit too repetitive, in parts, I found myself lost due to lots of the levels looking the same.

"gigawreckeralt3"
There is lots to love in the game, a really well thought and fun experience. A mix of action, puzzle and platformer which is rare in many games these days. Cool and slick graphics, design and animations. I'm still happily playing this game and still exploring new features all the time. There is some room for improvement in dialogue and cut scenes and getting the right amount of game text to dialogue but these are minor quibbles.

Overall: 7/10

Giga Wrecker Alt. A Divine Platforming Classic Returns with GODS Remastered - available today for Xbox One and PC

Conquer a white knuckle arcade puzzler to ascend to the heavens

4th December, London, UK: Robot Riot is proud to announce today that classic platformer from the 90s GODS Remastered is available today for PC and Xbox.

The new version of this great, unforgiving platform has been developed by the Hamburg based developer with the help and consultancy of Mike Montgomery, one of the original developers of the game and founder of Bitmap Brothers.

GODS Remastered has been created with nostalgia in mind, preserving the unique level design of this retro classic. This includes the use of original pixel graphics and sound effects that the original Amiga version used. However, with the option of switching to enhanced level and sprite graphics (which uses sophisticated lighting effects), it has something for both newcomers and returning players.

GODS Remastered features:
