Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag is an indie action platformer from HitGrab Inc. The game is in the finalists of the Nordic Discovery contest. As the title of the name game suggests, it's based on Celtic mythology and uses it for the setting of the game.

The game is presented using a classical art-style animation, it does remind of some Disney animation. It is reminiscent of many side-scrolling platforms in terms of visuals. It's a genre that has found a footing in indie games after being a mainstay on 8 and 16-bit consoles.

"clanoconall1"

Clan O'Conall makes great use of Celtic mythology which helps set the scene for the entire game. If you have played any old-school platformers or indie platformers, the mechanics and gameplay are familiar. Levels consist of worlds where you have to navigate platform sections, puzzles whilst switching through the three playable characters. Each character has skills and attributes to navigate different aspects of levels. The player has to use their skills to solve and progress through levels towards the bosses. There is a satisfying feeling to progressing through each level and a sense of accomplishment. The game is enjoyable as it mixes action and puzzles seamlessly throughout. It has the joyous feel of playing a well-crafted platform action game.

Controls are super simple and responsive, you feel in total control and the learning curve is low. The game is forgiving in terms of navigating the platforming sections.

"clanoconall2"

The graphics whilst simple are polished and bring the game to life, it's simply clean and suits the game to a tee. Each environment has its look and feels with different creatures to battle as well.

Each of the three characters has a levelling up system where you can build the character into whichever playstyle suits you. The character levelling is straightforward and isn't in-depth as an RPG.

"clanoconall3"

Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag delivers a fantastic vibrant action platformer that looks great. The gameplay is solid and is easy to pick up and get stuck into. Celtic mythology helps to give a backdrop to each level and ties the story. During the game, players will have to swap between three characters to navigate enjoyable levels. Each level has a great mix of platforming, action and puzzle gameplay. It's a fantastic fun platformer that I loved playing.

Lovecraft has already served as inspiration for several movies and games and now, developer Out of the Blue has decided to drink from this fountain, Call of the Sea, its action-puzzle title is based on the works of the famous writer.

You play as Norah, a woman suffering from an unknown disease (some black spots on both hands and sometimes has a hard difficulty on standing up or walking). Call of the Sea invites the player to explore a mysterious island off the coast of Tahiti in 1934 and try to decipher the unexplained disappearance of an archaeological expedition. The group, led by Harry, searched the local ruins and legends surrounding the region for a cure for the strange condition that afflicts Norah, after a few months without any kind of news from her husband, she receives a package in the mail with an old photo, a key with the initials CW and a bizarre dagger. The mission seems simple at first: find him. However, there is more to his illness and this island than one might think at first.

"CalloftheSea_1"

As the plot unfolds, we discover more details about the unfortunate ending of those who dared to set foot on the island, how their sanity gradually ebbed away, and we are forced to help Norah make a difficult decision: live or love.

The game has a great start! Directly linking to the great Cthulhu’s lore, the opening/beginning of the game is already amazing and very immersive.

The game has so much care on its creation like some letters have a short cutscene to illustrate what happened in the letter, this kind of detail gets me every time. Another great thing is that those who had read the books will see a bunch of direct references! Like de Vinyl from “The Music of Erich Zann” (One of my favourite tales by the way) or a newspaper talking about the family who lived on the farm from “Colour out of space”. So, if you are included in this level of appreciation of Lovecraft’s work, I strongly suggest you read everything! Another interesting writer to have a look at before you play is Julio Verne, I was lucky at this point, because I have read “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas”, and the book talks about the wonders of the mysteries that are hidden in the deeps of the sea.

The graphics reminded me a lot of Bioshock 3, being half drawn and half 3D. It has a brilliant landscape, worth it to take a few minutes to appreciate it.

"CalloftheSea_2"

Even though the games have this gigantic Lovecraft’s atmosphere, it brings a beautiful and joyful scenario with lots of singing birds… colours… and sunlight. Well… most of it anyway it does get dark as you go. So, from the first moments of Call of the Sea, it is evident that the game is inspired by many classic works of literature. Here we have clear evidence pointing to Julio Verne and H.P. Lovecraft. So that being said, Verne brings the amazing and beautiful part of the unknown in the meanwhile, Lovecraft, brings the dark cosmic part, which was an excellent mix for me and the game did it with perfection, as it's not a Lovecraftian horror game, but it doesn't leave aside its mysteries and influences.

Call of the Sea is divided into chapters where you'll have to unravel specific puzzles to have the means to solve an even bigger one that will give you the possibility to advance to the next part.

Assuming a didactic stance, the game starts the adventure calmly, with relatively simple challenges. However, as you progress into the island, the puzzles get more difficult with loads of “complex” puzzles that were made, so you take your time to solve them, they aren’t that easy but also not impossible that you would get stuck for days on it if you get all the clues that the game always gives you. So, remember, don’t play this game for the first time if you’re in a hurry. The best thing about these puzzles is that they are extremely rewarding when solved.

"CalloftheSea_3"

For me that the only bummer I saw during the game, was the fact that you can’t jump cutscenes nor dialogues, that’s a bit annoying when you are playing the game for the second and third time.

Norah has a diary which is extremely important to keep track of the updates that she does, so you have a beautiful immersion during this amazing experience. Every time Norah sees something important, a new note will appear in her notebook, and it's with these tips that the player needs to unravel the problems to advance to the next area and understand more about Henry's fate and the evil that befalls our explorer.

A good feature of the game is the fact that you can save anytime and continue exactly where you were at the moment you saved the game.

The soundtrack and sounds during the game are all impeccable! They go perfectly with the game’s atmosphere. My suggestion is that you play the game with a loud 5.1 Home heater or a good Headset, so you can feel the surroundings.

"CalloftheSea_4"

The voice acting is amazing, every single one of them does an excellent job, and we are accompanied by their beautiful narration until the last minutes of a short but memorable game. Part of the charm that captivates us comes precisely from the exceptional dubbing of Cissy Jones, a veteran of electronic games. Don’t get me wrong, the rest of the cast does a good job too, but Norah's is the soul of the game.

Call of the Sea was such a great surprise to me, from the first moment I saw a trailer I was intrigued with this game, being a huge fan of Lovecraft’s work, I was “puzzled” with this game and what it's about. Death's Door follows the trial and tribulations of a soul reaper, crow, as you progress through a series of puzzle-filled and action-packed levels. You play as a crow who has a job to get souls from creatures you encounter. Your job soon becomes a massive adventure.

As the crow reaper, you have assigned missions where you must collect the souls. The game starts in a sombre mood in a world lacking colour apart from the bright red sword you carry. However, before you know it the levels are filled with colours and you roam a plush world. The game does a fantastic job to tread between sombreness and being upbeat too.

"deathsdoor1"

The game starts with minimal instructions. I enjoyed this as it allows the player to explore and get used to the game. However, before you can do that, you have your first boss battle which turns into a hack and slash. You use the trusty bright red sword to kill the swathes of enemies that you encounter. The game shifts from dungeons that are a mix of hack and slash to dungeons full of puzzles. The game manages to make both gameplay elements enjoyable and challenging. Each level, puzzle and enemy get progressively more difficult, the instructions and assistance are kept to a minimum so it's up to the player to figure out the nuances of the game. While this seems subtle, it makes the game much richer, and the gameplay experience is gripping. I found it difficult to stop playing the game once I started.

The bosses are amazing; there is a real sense of accomplishment when you beat them. The bosses are a strange combination of weird, funny, and just plain odd. They are wonderfully rendered and full of detail.

"deathsdoor2"

I have to say I love the interconnected nature of each level. This gives a real feel that you are in a singular world and this helps to tie story elements too. Puzzles and unreachable sections become open as you progress through the game. The game does challenge the player to figure out what is available to do throughout the game.

The story is left purposely vague, and you will gather small morsels of information as you progress through levels and bosses. This helps to build up suspense, intrigue and tension. Each level helps to uncover more detail and builds the story into something of interest. The story has a mix of twists and turns with a beautiful soundtrack that helps to hammer the underlying theme.

"deathsdoor3"

The NPCs and your interactions act as the humour in the game and provide light-heartedness to the sombreness in the game, they also help drive the narration of the game too.

As this game is an indie game, there aren't any voice-overs. This is the only thing I think is missing for me, but the gameplay and story make up for it.

"deathsdoor4"

Death's Door combines a wonderful action-based game with a whole host of puzzles to solve. It has a brilliant mix of hack and slash, a beautifully crafted world that is intriguing and a joy to explore. Every aspect of the game has been designed impeccably, every small element including level design should be applauded. It's a wonderful game that excels in all elements: gameplay, story, music score and fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the game from start to end, I just found the game design and gameplay refreshing and such a joy.

The next installation set of DLC has come out for Valhalla. The siege of Paris has you moving from Ravensthorpe to Paris in the next chapter of this game. There is another threat on the horizon for Eivor with King Charles.

To play the DLC you will have to complete one of the two first story arcs in England and an option to sail to Francia will be available at your camp. The recommended power level for the siege of Paris is 200 but, the game will adjust if you have a higher level. If you have played the Ireland DLC, it's similar as it's a standalone new area separate from England.

"ACV_paris1"

Francia, which is ruled by Charles the Fat, provides the new terrain and landscape you can explore; the Seine and medieval Paris is there to be seen. The staples of Assassin Creed are there such as the viewpoints, the parkour, and frenetic combat. Francia is big and filled with castles, churches, and hidden subterranean environments to navigate. The roaming countryside and some villages are where you and your trusty steed will navigate between Paris and other cities. French accents and tones are encountered as you talk to passers-by and as you encounter the many characters of this world. The world is a sublime mixture of the dark underworld with brightness interspersed, the game is primarily dark as the focus is battle for Francia.

I love the infiltration missions whereby you can decide how you approach the missions and how you will assassinate your targets. They have made this mission type enjoyable, and you can either act in a stealthy manner or go all guns blazing. The infiltration missions let you solve several quests to find out more about your target and its weaknesses. At this point, you have all the information you need to make your decision to proceed, this happens throughout the game.

"ACV_paris2"

The architecture is faithfully recreating buildings of that era. You will be able to equip new unique items such as clothing and weapons too. You will encounter new enemies, animals throughout the DLC. Ubisoft gets the mix of a new place to play with solid gameplay, stunning visuals, and intriguing story arcs to boot. It was a joy to play and see places I was familiar with. There are new abilities and new gameplay mechanics and buildings too. It's a solid offering and it adds to the game.

The standalone price for the Valhalla season pass costs €39.99. The season pass is included in the Gold and Ultimate editions of Valhalla.

The season pass will include access to Wrath of the Druids and The Siege of Paris which will be released later in the year.

The siege of Paris DLC is about 10 hours of main quests and about 5 hours of side missions. If you are a big fan of Valhalla or enjoyed it as much as I did, the price is reasonable for the two-part DLC. I enjoyed the reprisal of the infiltration missions and more mission-based assassinations which reminds me of the original. The story is intriguing, and you do feel a part of the story where your actions have an impact on the world. The production and voice acting, the darkness all have been executed well. This DLC just reminded me again how much I enjoyed playing Valhalla.

When the opportunity of reviewing it, I was delighted to do it and the game gave me more than I was expecting from the beginning to the end of it, this is a 10 out of 10 game since you press “Start a new game”. I really hope that more and more games like this one keep coming.

Ps: Thank you Raw Fury for the opportunity of reviewing this game.

Overall:10/10
;

You (Dani Rojas) are thrown into the deep end trying to escape the military and police forces of Yara. There is a revolution in the air; you and your guerrilla comrades are ready to fight off Antón Castillo and his evil forces.

Far Cry 6 just extends the current format and gameplay style of Far Cry games. If you are new to Far Cry, it's a huge open world that you play the majority of the time in the first person. You can craft upgrades by collecting resources and upgrading your arsenal as you progress through the game. It's very much a first-person shooter where you have a host of vehicles and horseback to navigate the world.

"FC6_1"

If you have played previous versions, you can see this is an update to the last version with a new storyline and area (Yara) to explore. The game must be thought of as a mercenary style game where you slowly do tasks: take over checkpoints, sabotage the enemy, rob supplies etc... to gain influence over Yara and the inhabitants. It's a massive (I don't think this does it justice) open world that is stunning. You will take pictures and stop to admire the views during the game. It just looks superb, and every time I play, I notice new things. Yara is a tropical paradise that consists of a set of islands with volcanoes, mountains, jungles and beaches. Each aspect of the terrain and surroundings is captured in stunning detail with the addition of animals, the army and police to greet you at every corner.

Ubisoft has done a fantastic job with presentation, menus and general navigation in the game. They understand Far Cry and the little tweaks like quick travel all over the map-reduce the grind of travelling this huge map. The game is polished and has the refinements you expect from a series that has been around for so long.

"FC6_2"

The world is chaotic, action-packed and just mayhem at times. The game runs at dynamic 4K at 60 FPS. The story deals with themes of oppression, nationalism, freedom and authoritarianism. There is a close link to Yara and South American countries and their struggles. This is ubiquitous in the game. The game has a focus on revolutions and days gone by. The main story does capture these themes as well as the struggle of the people. The voice acting and acting is fantastic; it helps drive the story along. The gameplay is more a mercenary style where you play as you see fit to accomplish missions. There is a dichotomy between gameplay and the story. The story tries to paint Antón as a conflicted leader in parts with his son by his side. However, the vast amount of people suffering under his tyranny doesn't tally with any sympathy for Antón.

The game is fun, the explosions, the helicopters and just all-out action are fun. The game doesn't push the envelope in terms of new game-play or new game mechanics, it does Far Cry and first-person shooters fantastically well.

"FC6_3"

Far Cry 6 is extremely enjoyable; there is a lot to do in the world in between the main missions and plentiful side missions. If you have played Far Cry before, you may think this is more of the same. The world and narrative are done well, the ruthless dictator, good versus bad and lots of missions to expand the story. The game is chaotic fun. The crafting isn't overburdening for me which is great; I picked the majority of resources while doing missions and gaining control of the island. There is repetition in taking over key elements from the army but the sheer amount of missions help to break up the repetition of side missions. The game isn't groundbreaking; you have seen all of this done before but, it's great fun with an easy learning curve, you are in and doing missions within a few minutes of starting the game that should be applauded.

Overall: 7.5/10
Developer: Cathuria Games

Platform: PC, Early Access

Genre: Action, Adventure

Publisher: Raw Fury

Dream Cycle is a 3D adventure game from the creator of Tomb Raider, Toby Gard. Dream Cycle is a mix of a platformer, shooter and stealth game with some magic thrown in for good measure. For the player, this means you can adapt and play the game as suits you. You can go gung-ho or take a stealthy approach. I ended up playing a mix of both to get a feel of your weapons and game mechanics. I found the controls straightforward and intuitive. As you progress through the levels, you gain more magic spells to help you battle the creatures at each dark corner.

"dreamcycle3"

The mix of platform elements, fighting, and shooting constitute the core of the game. I enjoyed the choice of a bow, handgun or machine gun as your choice of ranged weapons, unexpected but fun.

"dreamcycle2"

It is an early access game with the latest patch of 1.1.6 at the time of this preview. I didn't encounter any bugs or issues on my playthroughs. The world and the cel-shaded art style mixed with magic elements provides a wonderful; canvas for Morgan to explore. The game has tons of adventures and levels to navigate. I loved the mix of climbing and traversing terrain while using spells such as astral projection to navigate parts of the level to find the best way to scale huge castles. The environments and graphics are magical and intriguing. I did find the similar enemies a bit repetitive at times. I would have liked a bit more of a story-driven narrative to levels instead of just choosing them from the map. In totality, I enjoyed the game mechanics, the levels and the world. I am looking forward to seeing future updates in this game and what the game will ultimately become.
Developer: EA Vancouver

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X(Reviewed)|S

Genre: Sports

Publisher: EA Sports

The end of the European transfer brings the anticipation of the next FIFA game, and before you know it, it's FIFA 22 time. The ubiquitous football (soccer) game is now available to play. Fifa 22 like, its predecessors is the next in the series that improves on previous seasons and includes updated teams. When players start to speak about their card ratings, we know that FIFA is going to be released shortly.

New goalkeeper AI means the goalkeepers have been; improved with better positioning and shot-stopping with better reflexes. Improved ball physics with respect to speed, swerve, drag and other realistic real-world simulations have been added. Even more, tactics to improve the simulation aspects of team play. Hypermotion available on next-generation consoles combines general improvements to team tactics, better player physics and improved ball control; i.e. getting FIFA to the next level of real-life simulation. This is all combined with the use of machine learning to enhance the overall gaming experience. FIFA 22 is the next generation of improvements to FIFA.

"fifa22_1"

In reality, it's difficult to feel all these elements straight off in your first few games. There is sleeker ball control mechanic and player animations, there does seem to be better team AI, and the game does have a solid flow. Players and their likeness is captured with amazing: detail. In general, game mechanics are improved but, there are no massive overhauls but; the game does play better and is more responsive.

Online games and matchmaking are superb; the net code means finding games is easy and, there are very few issues when games are being played. I spend the majority of my time playing Seasons or Volta online so I would notice this.

"fifa22_2"

The licences are all there, the players, the leagues and the cups. FUT, Seasons, Volta (street football), Career Mode and Pro Clubs are just a few of the game modes you can play in. Volta has seen the introduction of a skill meter and signature moves too to enhance the experience even more. There are online modes and, Volta has an arcade mode to bolster its online mode. FIFA 22 has more than enough game modes, and they are in-depth that will have you coming back. I enjoy Volta as it breaks the 11 vs 11 standard football and offers an arcade-like football experience.

The gameplay, soundtrack and presentation are all superb, I have to say EA gets this aspect of the game spot on; there is enough to break the monotony of basic menus.

"fifa22_3"

The next generation FIFA 22 does look stunning and will satisfy the majority of football fans. The game doesn't make a massive overhaul or game mechanics changes from the previous versions. Again it's an update with updated rosters. The improved AI and goalkeeping has been noticeable and welcomed. I have encountered few glitches or issues. The issue I did encounter was when my online Volta session became locked and I had to restart the game. As usual, the game has a super polish on all elements with bright, flashy screens and updated soundtracks. FIFA 22 is the best football game on the market and does have nice updates from the last version but, it isn't earth-shattering or new.

Overall: 8/10
Developer: Dark Lord

Platform: Steam Early Access from August 11th

Genre: Action, Early Access

Publisher: Daedalic Entertainment

Glitchpunk is the latest cyberpunk game that I have managed to get some hands-on gameplay time over the last week. The game is a top-down action game in the mould of the classic GTA games. You fight, kill, rob cars and go on missions in this dark and gloomy world filled with gangs and enemies.

"glitchpunk1"

If you have played the original GTA games, that will give a good sense of what you will get. The game's mechanics are 2D top-down action-based mayhem where you guide your player around the dark and dystopian city. You can collect new guns, powerups and missions as you navigate the city. You can hijack cars and do as you please! A decent storyline and good dialogue help to bring some colour to the world.

Glitchpunk allows the player to build relationships with other gangs/factions that can be friendly or adversarial. It means you can be in a hostile world where you are enemy number one, not just with law enforcement.

"glitchpunk2"

I have to say I enjoyed the twin-stick shooter elements and walking around the world completing missions. However, it should be noted that it is an early access game, and it has some issues. The driving mechanics in the vehicles are clunky and annoying; to say the least, it needs a bit of tweaking. I encountered various issues with the frame rate with a whole host of different graphical settings that also made the game frustrating. Whilst doing missions, you can get a cop rating of between 1 - 5 that indicates your wanted level, I found that police just randomly being everywhere and that the two stars wanted level; that it didn't make a whole lot of sense. The save game feature isn't spelt out. If the developers were to do this, it would have made my first few attempts at the game less annoying. It turned into a rogue-like until I figured out where the safe house was.

"glitchpunk3"

The combination of these issues does impact the game. The ComicBuzz gaming team and I finally got our chance to get our hands on the final two parts of The Isklander trilogy from Swamp Motel. We did already; review the first part of the Islander trilogy, just in case you want to check out that review.

The Isklander trilogy is a team-based online alternate reality game part puzzle, interactive movie, escape room and scavenger hunt. You and your team have a limited time to solve several multimedia riddles in a limited time.

"isklander1"

The second part of The Isklander trilogy is called The Mermaid’s Tongue, and the third part is called The Kindling Hour. I do not want to give away any spoilers, so I do not really want to talk about the story. All I want to say is that the subsequent parts of the trilogy; continue the story set-up in the first part-Plymouth Point. Plymouth Point is a mystery that involving a person named Ivy Isklander. I think: the less you know about the plot of any mystery game going into it, the better the experience is. I believe this is true for The Isklander trilogy.

I have already mentioned that this is a team-game, for up to six people. You and your team must use your skills to solve the puzzles that arise. The set-up involves you; meeting several characters in the form of a live-action scene and, the rest is up to you and your team. The rest of the game involves you and your team; getting into a spider web of multimedia unknowns as you race against time to solve the puzzles before the time is up.

"isklander3"

To play the game, all you need is a web browser: PC or laptop, cam, mic. I do recommend a pen, paper and some form of headphones and some quiet time. I have to say I really enjoyed the game as a whole; I found the story more intriguing as it went along, the puzzles also got more complex. For me, the live-action scenes pulled me into the plot. It felt very engaging. I enjoyed the acting. For me, it really added to the overall atmosphere of the game. I have to say that I thought the second and third parts seemed a bit short to me. The reason parts two and three felt short; could be that I was having too much fun or maybe due to my team just being so good at puzzle solving.

"isklander2"

The Isklander trilogy was the first time that I experienced this type of team-based online alternate reality game. I had a blast. I can see why some companies would use this type of game for a team-building exercise. It is a very different experience from your PC/console gaming.

I would recommend this game for anyone who likes puzzles games and has several friends to get together with and enjoy themselves. The game is unique, something I think gamers should experience. I look forward to seeing what Swamp Motel can do in the future with this medium. I would say that the ComicBuzz gaming team would love to experience it.

Overall:10/10
;
