Effie has just lost her Mom and now stands in the home of her estranged Aunt, a woman whom she has never known. Now left in her Aunt's care, Effie is suddenly forced to adjust her whole life as not only to being an orphan but also to her new surroundings. As her Aunts try their best to comfort her and also learn to adjust to their new and much younger houseguest, they are also trying to juggle keeping their other job a secret. Effie’s Aunt and her partner are both Witches! The good kind of course, who use their knowledge to help people and also lift curses from World renowned popstars. An exciting adventure awaits, as Effie begins to develop her own magical talents.

"witchesofbrooklyn1"

What began as a story of immense loss and sadness, a complete life unheavful and total uncertainty of what tomorrow will bring - was instead turned into quite an uplifting read. As we meet Effie and her two Aunts, as they meet through unfortunate circumstances and are instantly put into a new family dynamic. Where the resident senior citizen witches are enjoying their routine life, they are overnight made into guardians for a young girl that is only roughly related to them. We begin to understand both sides of the story, as we see the situation from both viewpoints. Effie begins to deal with her loss, the challenges that await her in both a new home, school and environment. Thankfully, there are children her age that take a shine to her and almost instantly they become friends. As they all share the same interests, its not long before what was once a quiet house is soon filled with laughter again.

Once the initial secret has been exposed, there are a number of other surprises waiting for Effie in her new home. From a popstar in her kitchen, to the dedication and science behind creating new potions and even some magical talent that has made it down through generations of her family tree. This story not only tackles some sad subjects such as loss, but also the anxiety of having to adjust to a new life without any familiarities. It’s a book well worth spending your time reading, with beautiful illustrations and great storytelling. I doubt it will be the last we hear of Effie’s character, as I hope to see a second book joining this series next year.

The story and illustrations were created by Sophie Escabasse, a French author and illustrator living in Montreal. She has done illustrations for many books in her career, including Florence Parry Heide and Roxanne Heide Pierce’s Spotlight Club Mysteries series (Albert Whitman); and the Freestyler Funnies series by Tom Easton (Hachette UK). This book, “Witches of Brooklyn” appears to be her first solo debut and I am sure it will be a success.

From demons to werewolves, and even Dracula himself. This story follows monster hunter Sterling Cross as he steps through time in order to eradicate the hellish beasts. This time however, may be his final fight as he comes face to face with the Queen in Black.

This volume includes the entire 7 issue series of Wolvenheart, a comic series that was full of excitement from start to finish. With a number of surprises thrown in, we get just a glimpse of what Sterling Cross' life was. With intriguing character backgrounds, which I wish were explored even further as I am still left with wanting to discover more. The initial plot was well executed and delivered in what I thought was a captivating final battle. That last panel though, has left fans screaming for an 8th issue at least!!

"wolvenheartvol1_1"

Sterling Cross is no ordinary man, with a gypsie heritage and the blood of a vampire coursing through his veins, he often has to battle against his thirst for blood. Having learnt to feed the right beast, Cross has become one of the Organization's most prominent monster hunters. With the legend that is Van Helsing as his mentor, how could he not live up to their expectations.

Following the execution of Dracula, Van Helsing set up the Wolvenheart Organisation in order to have a team of hunters on hand to travel throughout time to erase the monsters that had escaped Hell itself during Dracula's rule. This series has many time jumping moments which could have been disastrous to follow, but was instead handled well in its deliverance making for a very enjoyable read through. From the origins of the organisation, to its downfall. With the ability of time jumping, it can only take one person to constantly rewrite history, thankfully we have Sterling Cross.

"wolvenheartvol1_2"

Now there were several main characters that played prominent roles in this book, as well as Cross' upbringing. Although we don't know much about Sterling's parentage, we do see the strong ties he holds to the gypsies he was raised by. This comic also breaks the stereotypical boundaries, as Helsing himself, originally a monk, joined forces with two other societies in order to bring down Dracula. Three ethnic groups that despise one another, managed to put differences aside all for the greater good. I just wish more information was given in regards to not only Cross' parents, but also Sabinas’.

Once again Mad Cave Studios have produced another remarkable series, with Mark London handling the script. The very same man who is also responsible for bringing the story of Battlecats to life. Alongside fellow Battlecat illustrator Alejandro Giraldo, who handled all the artwork for Wolvenheart. The art style and story for this series is obviously aimed at the Teen+ market, for it's dark themes and horror moments. It's a great read for a standalone series and I would highly recommend it if you have never checked out the studio before.

https://madcavestudios.com/product/wolvenheart-vol-1-legendary-slayer/

Overall: 8/10
Written By: Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss

Illustrated By: Jay

Published By: Titan Comics

The Great Detective Sherlock Holmes finds himself sitting on a couch in the Royal Palace, with just a mere bed sheet to cover his modesty. With his talents having been acknowledged by members of the Royal family, Sherlock has been tasked to deal with a very important and private matter, before some dreadfully embarrassing photos get leaked to the public. This is where the iconic character of Irene Adler gets introduced, but there is a twist to this story. As Ms Adler is portrayed as a very professional dominatrix, whose clients are all members of High Society - some are even members of the Royal family. Now Holmes must do all he can to persuade Ms Adler to hand over the very sensitive photographs that would ultimately ruin the image of the Royal Family for good.

It has been quite some time since I've reviewed a Sherlock Holmes graphic novel. The last one being 'A Study in Pink' back in 2017 from what I recall. 'A Study in Belgravia' is another graphic novel adaption of the hit TV series Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the lead detective. Having already seen the series, I know what direction this book was already going to take, but nonetheless it was still a very enjoyable read.

"sherlockvol1_sib1"

With Sherlock's reputation now being published in all the newspapers and even Watsons online blog. It's no wonder that his client list has now reached wider circles. Following his encounters with Moriarty, Sherlock needs another opponent that is skilled enough to keep him on his toes. Thus we have Ms Irene Adler, her first meeting with Sherlock is indeed startling to see the least and she is bolder than what I would have imagined prior to watching the show. She indeed has the skill to go toe to toe with the Detective, and can easily unarm any other individual that comes her way. However Ms Adler still manages to get into some serious trouble, as her life is now on the line when intruders decide to attack her home at the same time Sherlock and Watson are visiting.

Ms Adlers character is not only bold, but she has a brilliant mind. Although she is adaptable and appears to be in control of practically any room, her curiosity gets the better of her at times. Especially in regards to Holmes and his cases. The sort of relationship the two begin to share, leaves a black mark on Sherlock when he receives some devastating news during Christmas. For fans however it does leave a spark of hope, that Benedict Cumberbatch's version of Sherlock, may in fact have a love interest down the line. What was once deemed as highly unimaginable in the first season, has just entered the realm of possibility.

"Sherlockvol1_sib2"

Whether you have seen the TV show adaptation or not, but have a good idea of what the infamous story of Sherlock Holmes involves - then I think you would enjoy this graphic novel release. Although this story takes place in what would be Season Two of the show, it would be best to start reading this series from the very beginning, so you can better understand the dynamic between Sherlock and his flatmate - Watson, as well as the very interesting brotherly love relationship between the two Holmes boys.

Once again, it is well worth checking out and is a must have in your collection if you are indeed a Sherlockian.

Overall: 7/10

Oct. 9, 2020, (EUGENE, OR) — Mad Cave Studios invites readers to delve into something Villainous! The 2019 Talent Search winners, Stonie Williams and Jef Sadzinki, take heroism to the next level with an all-new tale that will surely make you want to shed your scales...

Villainous follows Tilly, one of the newest super-powered beings to join the Coalition of Heroes through their sidekick program, as she navigates the dizzying world of Super-Heroes. In the series, 15% of the world’s population of 7.5 billion people are now stuck on another planet, miles from the safety of home. Sanda learns that humans have been brought to Planet Divoc-91 because the Earth is at risk of an extinction level event – and young adults have been moved to safety by the Board of Adversity Scientists for Intergalactic Leadership’ (BASIL), led by a charismatic and fearsome alien named ADRO.

PLANET DIVOC-91 is produced by Dr Bella Starling, Director of Vocal at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Sara Kenney, Creative Director at Wowbagger Productions, in association with the UK Academy of Medical Sciences. “Bella and I were already working together on creative projects to engage audiences in sharing their views about antibiotic resistance and immunisation and when lockdown hit, it became obvious that our thinking could be refocused on the COVID pandemic,” said Kenney. “We realized there was a ton of information and advice about the pandemic out there, but it’s so difficult to know what to believe and who to trust, and there were virtually no young voices in the mix.” The project has since grown in scale and ambition, and there is a young editorial team from UK, India, South Africa, and Malawi who are interviewing experts from scientists to historians, ethicists to anthropologists, and from that material curating articles, creating art and videos in reaction to the interviews.

“Being teenagers and going through the most challenging stage of our lives is hard in itself — but now the impact of this new virus is resonating through our lives without any sense of when this will end,” writes Shanjida Hossain, one of the young adults contributing to the comic, in an interview with Sir Patrick Vallance, the UK Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor; “Having studied hard since the age of five, getting to the very end of our educational journey to face this global pandemic wasn’t something we could have ever planned for, yet here we are, left with nothing but insecurities and confusion.” Shanjida’s interview will accompany PLANET DIVOC-91’s debut chapter.

“Whenever our worlds are turned upside down and we find ourselves crying “what the hell”, we call upon stories to explain “this: this the hell,” Berry writes in the afterword to PLANET DIVOC-91 Chapter One. “Our brains are hardwired with a furious need to find patterns as a means of survival, and we hunt for them - and for their subsequent meanings - everywhere, in everything. Stories bring shape and meaning to random events. They are about the conflict and the resolution; the breaking apart and the coming together; they help us to find hope in darkness and rally us when we are lost and, ultimately, they help us overcome. Faced with the greatest upheaval of a generation, and the strict social obligations keeping us all apart, where better to seek that sense of connection and meaning now than in stories?”

“PLANET DIVOC-91 is a thought experiment, one that’s a metaphor for what we’re currently experiencing around the world with COVID-19,” said Kenney. “We’re releasing the series on WEBTOONS, because it's an inclusive, wide-reaching, digital platform, with a global audience of 10 million readers daily, and we want to foster a dialogue in the comments section, about the pandemic and where we go from here. We’ve also got some exclusive mixes hidden as Easter Eggs in the comic starting with one of the best UK Grime DJs, and a uniquely talented and much loved producer in his own right Grandmixxer. Chapter 2 features a mix from one of the most important new-generation experimental UK club music producer, artist and label owner LCY. Chapter 3 features an Afrofuturism playlist from one of the UKs best loved MCs Juice Aleem. And at the end of the day, we want readers to come back each month for the story and art. Why is Planet Divoc-91 inhabited only by 16-25 year old humans? Who are these strange aliens? Sanda Oung, a bit of a conspiracy theorist at first, has to figure out what is real and who to trust.”

The project was kick started via NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre seed funding who are providing continued support. The series was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our aim is to empower audiences to make sense of a pandemic situation, to create a forum for their ideas, and to use participatory arts to inform science research and influence science policy,” said Kenney.

“We’re creating a crazy, exquisite corpse with writers and artists taking on the same characters that will be accessible, entertaining and informative,” said Starling. “The wider project will capture young people’s thinking and ideas about pandemics and related research, to feed into scientific research and policy, as well as helping and challenging our research communities to think about the best ways of actively involving young adults in ongoing and future research”

PLANET DIVOC-91 debuted on July 15, 2020 Free on WebToons: https://bit.ly/planetdivoc91.

Written By: Kate Sherron

Illustrated By: Toni Kuusisto

Colorist: Heather Breckel

Lettering By: Neil Uyetake

Cover By: Toni Kuusisto

Published By: IDW Publishing

Cerberus: the Guard Dog to the gates of Tartarus has run off yet again. After the assistance of the Mane Six and Princess Celestia, the three-headed beast is brought back to his post. With such an important task of protecting the inhabitants of Equestria from the evil creatures that are imprisoned beyond the gate. Princess Celestia looks for someone whom she trusts to give Cerberus some obedience lessons. Due to the hectic schedule of each of the Mane Six, the task eventually lands on Rarity. Will this diamond be strong enough to tame the rough beast?

This is another one shot from the My Little Pony creators. This issue see’s Equestria’s Guard Dog make a run for it yet again, leaving the Gates of Tartarus vulnerable. Thankfully there seems to be no escaped felons at this time, but Cerberus needs to have some obedience training in order for that to never be a possibility. This pup is bored from his duties and with little to no visitors or play time, it’s no wonder he escaped! We can see that Princess Celestia brings him his food, but I doubt that Alicorn has much spare time to spend with the beast. After approaching each one of the trusted Mane Six to undertake the Summer long task of training Cerberus, it all falls on Rarity when Pinkie Pie outs her for having little to no new projects that require her. Although Rarity is obviously more of a lover of cats than dogs, this Summer gets off to a bumpy start from the get go.

Cereberus, although large in appearance and a bit daunting to approach due to his three heads, he is just a playful pup at heart. Lacking in some attention and playtime, this pup just needs a break from his Guard duties. It takes some time for Rarity to understand this, but after a helpful chat with the Cutie Mark Crusaders - Rarity begins to understand Cerberus just that bit more. Just like the diamonds on her flank, Rarity’s personality is just as strong as the precious crystals. Although she faces many hardships and tough moments in her attempts at training Cerberus, she continues to try and teach him every day without fail. All she needed was a new approach and to understand the beast's situation, instead of enforcing her will upon it. This would be a great issue to give to readers that are taking on the responsibility of a new pet, especially in helping them understand the duties that are attached.

"MLP_fim82_1"

This issue and the artwork for Cover A have been created by Illustrator - Toni Kuusisto. This cover does a superb job at representing the story, with Cerberus looming above the ill-prepared Rarity. A broken wall lays behind her, marking Cerberus' entry into her life. As a roll of fabric and scissors lay abandoned on the ground, as Rarity looks up upon the many faces of her Summer long job.

Cover B is another accurate representation of this issue, as Cerberus’s many faces lick Rarity’ as a sign of affection towards it’s new playmate. The normal prim and proper Rarity, now appears out of her comfort zone and she now stands covered in drool. This cover shows the softer side of Cerberus personality, one that is greatly explored in this issue. And lastly we have the Cover RI design by Nicoletta Baldari, the same illustrator from Issue 81. This cover art is once again just for fun and actually has nothing to do with this issues’ story. Here we have all the Mane Six as they are attempting to design some sort of either dress or magician's cloak on Twilight Sparkle. With each other pony having their own particular job to perform, either in measurements, tacking or placement. Twilight stands in the middle as a model of sorts, but with a rather unusual sassy demeanor about her. With the rather bright and colorful image, the character design for Twilight, especially her facial expression, is a bit off putting for me. It wouldn’t actually influence me picking up the issue off the shelves at all.

The story inside this issue is still rather entertaining and like I mentioned before, it would be best targeted for those young kids that are now getting more responsibilities for taking care of their own pets. I just wish there was a little bit more action, with perhaps some clues as to a prisoner escaping from the Gates of Tartarus, whilst Cerberus was running about. Now seeing as this issue has been out for quite some time and depending on how great your local comic book stores’ back issue section is, you may have to resort to buying this issue online. Luckily enough you can purchase both the print and digital copy straight from IDW Publishing.

Overall: 7/10

Developer: Bird Bath Games

Platform(s): PlayStation 4, Xbox One (Reviewed), PC

Gene(s): Action, Indie

Publisher: Raw Fury

It's a crazy world in Atomicrops. It starts off a slow-paced farming simulator, make a small little patch to plant your seeds, water them and watch them grow. Before you know it you run out of valuable garden equipment, you must wander the land to find seeds, tools, and anything else of use. Just as you get settled at the pace of the game, it all changes. Tara has a secret that even she was unaware of. For the first time in her life, Tara wakes up late for school one morning and her life changed forever. After a series of clumsy accidents, not taking her daily medication and losing her temper for the first time - Tara ends up catching fire! Just what is happening to her body, why don’t the flames hurt her and will she ever be able to get back to living her quiet life again? Perhaps the guy in the suit will be able to explain why she just woke up in an ice box!

Now this has been an interesting read! Girl on Fire is the first book in the new School for Extraterrestrial Girls series from author Jeremy Whitley. A series that I assume will be following the new life of this volume's main character Tara, as she comes to terms with her lost identity, heritage, appearance and how she came to be on Earth. With a Universe of possibilities in front of her, the next volume looks to include another aspect of being a teenager that Tara seems to have had zero experience of so far. But I’ll leave that a secret for now, as you’ll be able to discover it for yourself when you get to the end of this book.

"School-for-Extraterrestrial-Girls_Page_1"

One of the main themes of this book seems to be how a shy, recluse teenager is forced to adapt to their new surroundings. Almost like how a student from a public school, is whisked away to a boarding school. Quickly thrown into the fire, Tara learns much more about herself from strangers than what she understood to be true her entire life. This girl must learn to accept the truth, come to terms with who and what she is, as well as her people's history. She isn’t the only character that must do this though, her case isn’t as rare as you would think either as a fellow room mate has a similar-ish story. There is also a lovely lesson in this story, apart from being true to yourself. ‘Don’t judge people based on their appearance’. That statement is imperative to this story.

So we have several ‘heated’ moments in this book, with emotional breakdowns, some harsh truths, tough choices, incredibly bad decisions and a good deal of apologizing. I don’t want to give away any more detail, as half the enjoyment of this book is the surprise. As you can tell from the title and cover though, its’ no secret that there are aliens involved of all shapes and species. So take your time reading this book and tell me in the comments section below or on our social media - how many different alien species did you spot. The one that stood out for me and you can spot it on the cover - is the humanoid cat. All I can picture is that they might be related to Goose, the cat looking creature known as a Flerken from Captain Marvel. Now that would be a twist! As well as the usual teenage, high spirited drama. There are breaches in Galactic protocol, some Alien child traffickers, a secret U.S government department to deal with all of this and then the usual school assignments for history class. I mean, what else can they put in this story!

"School-for-Extraterrestrial-Girls_Page_2"

School for Extraterrestrial Girls Volume 1: Girl on Fire is the first original graphic novel release from author Jeremy Whitley. His previous work includes ‘Princeless’, several issues of ‘Courage The Cowardly Dog’, Marvels ‘The Unstoppable Wasp’, and ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’. The illustrations were handled by Jamie Noguchi, who has worked with numerous companies including UDON, Marvel, Dark Horse Comics and Image. He also did the illustrations for the series Erfworld - which was among the Top 10 Graphic Novels of 2007 according to Times Magazine. The background artwork in this volume however has been lacking, but the character designs - well that is where Jamie’s imagination went wild. Some designs are iconic, others look somewhat familiar, but he has done a great job in taking ideas from several genres to create his own school of aliens. I’m looking forward to seeing what or who we get introduced to in the next issue.

As of right now you can start pre ordering this book over on Amazon and Book Depository. If you can, please order it through your local comic bookstore. This story follows a young girl named Lora and her group of friends as they begin to grow up into teenagers. From days spent playing ‘make believe adventures’ and using their imagination to create new games, slowly Lora’s friend circle begins to dwindle as they each become more interested in make up, video games and finding romance. Lora on the other hand has no interest in any of these topics yet and prefers the simple things in life, like just messing around in the outdoors. Whilst reading a book on the supernatural, Lora decides to hold a séance tea party in her attic. Little did she realise that her childhood imaginary friend Alexa would reappear.

Alexa is infact a wandering ghost of a young girl that used to live in the town decades ago. As the two girls rekindle their lost friendship, they each start helping one another accept life's challenges. This is a very charming coming of age story, perfect for those aged ten and above who are starting to shy away from playing with traditional toys and games.

"seanceteaparty_1"

This is in fact the first story I have ever read by Reimena Yee and it really was delightful. With a plot that can almost instantly connect with the majority of readers, it also has the magic to bring up old memories for the older readers like myself of when they were at a similar age and going through the same challenges. This story is even more relevant in todays' society as it seems as though todays' generation of kids are getting interested in video games and pop culture at a much younger age than before. So when I first thought that this story would be ideal for those aged 12 and above, in reality we could be looking more at the 10 years old age bracket.

It is also the perfect time of year to get into a good book or series, as the winter season begins to creep in and the evenings get darker a lot earlier now. I have always enjoyed the coming of age genre of books, each of them usually has their own take on that stressful time between wanting to stay a kid forever but at the same time, wanting to be more adult. This is perhaps the first book I've read that actually involves a ghost, Alexa who helps our protagonist Lora to better understand her feelings and with just a bit of extra support is able to gather the courage to go out and try new things.

"seanceteaparty_2"

This is also a good book to perhaps read alongside your child as it does touch on a number of important subjects, like bullying, peer pressure and feeling as though they are being left behind by their friends. It is one of those stories that is there to help you create an environment for your child to be comfortable to talk openly about issues such as these.

This book was entirely created by Reimena Yee, a very talented illustrator, writer and designer originally from Kuala Lumpur but now resides in Melbourne, Australia. She is the author-illustrator of the gothic comics, "The World in Deeper Inspection", the Eisner and Mcduffie-nominated "The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya", and is also the writer of "The Makers Club" series.

Before you know it you run out of valuable garden equipment, you must wander the land to find seeds, tools, and anything else of use. Just as you get settled at the pace of the game, it all changes.

Tiến is a young boy living in America, the only child of immigrant parents from Vietnam. Having grown up in the States his entire life, his first language is English. Which unfortunately means that there is a difficult language barrier at times when he wishes to speak to his parents, as they are still trying to learn the language. In order to include them more, Tiến reads fairy tales with them every night ever since he was a little boy. The only problem is, that the one subject he wishes to talk about most isn’t found in your traditional fairy tales. So just how is Tiến going to come out to his parents?

First off, this really was an interesting story. I haven't come across many that deal with the same scenario that Tiến is living in. Born to immigrant parents, and not being fluent in the language his parents have grown up with. I can see that his parents work incredibly hard for the life they currently have, and as we see by his mothers’ actions they have been saving money for several years in order to go back to visit their families back in Vietnam. Which would act as a first meeting for Tiến and his wider family, even though he is already about twelve years old I say. In order to set their son up and give him the best start in America, they solely focussed on him having English as his first language. A difficult decision to make, as it does suggest they made a big sacrifice in regards to their identity and where they came from by not being able to pass that on to their son. The biggest barrier they face though, is this language connection and trying to find a perfect balance between both their native languages. Although his parents do try their best, they are also incredibly busy with their jobs in order to stay afloat and being able to send money back home to Vietnam to care for their ailing parents. This is a sad tale and its not completely fiction, as there are people today that still struggle with the same living standards and cultural barriers within families who have also made the dangerous journey of fleeing to another country in order to live a better life. All you have to do is look at the news.

"themagicfish_28"

Tiến seems to have some bit of understanding about the struggles his parents have gone through in order to give him the life they now have. He can see how tired his father is when he returns home from work, the odd jobs his mother has. As well as the numerous times that even just his clothes need to be mended, instead of replacing them with something new. Tiến has his own struggles as well, which include his self confidence and the guilt he feels, as he does not know how to act on his feelings towards his best guy friend. This story is also based in the 1990’s, so ideals and community values were still high and expected to be inline with what the Church thought - much like Ireland was at the time. So for Tiến to even talk about or approach anyone about his sexuality, was met with having to be reeducated and being forced to talk to the local clergyman. He not only had no support that he could reach out to, because of either a language barrier or not knowing who to trust. Combined with the sudden family tragedy, he had a lot of emotional baggage to deal with at the time. This is certainly a book worth reading, as it puts it all down to a human level and one that makes it instantaneous to connect with the characters.

"themagicfish_45"

The majority of this book is also a retelling of a fairy tale called ‘Tattercoats’, as well as versions of the Little Mermaid and Cinderella. Versions that I have not read before, but were beautifully drawn and told. They fitted in well alongside the main story, but left me wanting to read more about these children's classics by the end. Now this book isn’t entirely fiction, as it is somewhat based off of the childhood of the author. Trung Le Nguyen was born from Vietnamese Immigrants that arrived in the US. Having learnt both English and Vietnamese side by side when he was young, just like his main character they also shared the same pastime of borrowing fairy tales from the library. Which led to family discussions about the stories and eventually their language barrier developed its own balance, as they all used a hybrid of both English & Vietnamese at home. A balance which Tiến and his mother are searching for.

In order to experience this book in all its glory, you are just going to have to pick it up for yourself. As I fear I am failing to describe, just how influential this story may become for so many people. You can find the book now, in both digital and print. Even better yet, go and grab the hardback copy from your local bookstore!

Additional supporters include The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC); Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC); The University of Manchester through the Wellcome Institutional Strategic Support Fund award; Sarah Iqbal, DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance; Anita Shervington, Blast Fest and Nabeel Petersen, Interfer (South Africa).

It's a strange mix of a roguelike game. It's a part farming simulator and part crazy shooter. This combination is what makes Atomicrops an interesting and varied experience. Out of nowhere during the night, your plants come under attack, you must rush back to protect them. This is when it becomes topsy turvy, the action begins and before you know it swarms of nasties want to eat your crop and you too, though mainly your crop. It's at this point it turns out to be an all-action shooter with enemies, and bosses appearing from every angle, you must and you will protect your valuable crop. As dawn is about to appear, the crazed hordes subside and you can be at peace for a few minutes. It's a case of powering up, tending to your crop, exploring, and then awaiting another onslaught.

"atomicrops1"

This is Atomicrops in a nutshell. Each period ties into a season and as your progress through each season it becomes tougher, the battles become bigger and the mayhem more pronounced. The bright visuals, the shift between day and night from season to season bring this bright vivid game to life. Sounds and effects add to each shift in gameplay too. The shift between game pace makes for a chaotic but enjoyable experience. It's super simple to pick and play but incredibly enjoyable. With any roguelike, the enjoyable factor is how much time and effort you put into mastering it.

"atomicrops2"

The game has solid game mechanics, fun, and easy to pick up with tons of action to boot. This game will keep you addicted for many an hour and will have you coming back to last another season in this crazy world.

Overall: 8/10

Written By: Jeremy Whitley

Illustrated By: Jamie Noguchi

Colored By: Jamie Noguchi, Shannon Lilly

Lettering By: Wilson Ramos Jr.

Published By: Papercutz

Release Date: 4th August 2020

Tara Smith isn’t your typical American teenager, not just because she has numerous food allergies, wears a mysterious bracelet, leads a very routine life or much prefers to keep to her studies instead of socializing.
