Effie has just lost her Mom and now stands in the home of her estranged Aunt, a woman whom she has never known. Now left in her Aunt's care, Effie is suddenly forced to adjust her whole life as not only to being an orphan but also to her new surroundings. As her Aunts try their best to comfort her and also learn to adjust to their new and much younger houseguest, they are also trying to juggle keeping their other job a secret. Effie’s Aunt and her partner are both Witches! The good kind of course, who use their knowledge to help people and also lift curses from World renowned popstars. An exciting adventure awaits, as Effie begins to develop her own magical talents.

"witchesofbrooklyn1"

What began as a story of immense loss and sadness, a complete life unheavful and total uncertainty of what tomorrow will bring - was instead turned into quite an uplifting read. As we meet Effie and her two Aunts, as they meet through unfortunate circumstances and are instantly put into a new family dynamic. Where the resident senior citizen witches are enjoying their routine life, they are overnight made into guardians for a young girl that is only roughly related to them. We begin to understand both sides of the story, as we see the situation from both viewpoints. Effie begins to deal with her loss, the challenges that await her in both a new home, school and environment. Thankfully, there are children her age that take a shine to her and almost instantly they become friends. As they all share the same interests, its not long before what was once a quiet house is soon filled with laughter again.

Once the initial secret has been exposed, there are a number of other surprises waiting for Effie in her new home. From a popstar in her kitchen, to the dedication and science behind creating new potions and even some magical talent that has made it down through generations of her family tree. This story not only tackles some sad subjects such as loss, but also the anxiety of having to adjust to a new life without any familiarities. It’s a book well worth spending your time reading, with beautiful illustrations and great storytelling. I doubt it will be the last we hear of Effie’s character, as I hope to see a second book joining this series next year.

The story and illustrations were created by Sophie Escabasse, a French author and illustrator living in Montreal. She has done illustrations for many books in her career, including Florence Parry Heide and Roxanne Heide Pierce’s Spotlight Club Mysteries series (Albert Whitman); and the Freestyler Funnies series by Tom Easton (Hachette UK). This book, “Witches of Brooklyn” appears to be her first solo debut and I am sure it will be a success.

This time however, may be his final fight as he comes face to face with the Queen in Black.

This volume includes the entire 7 issue series of Wolvenheart, a comic series that was full of excitement from start to finish. With a number of surprises thrown in, we get just a glimpse of what Sterling Cross' life was. With intriguing character backgrounds, which I wish were explored even further as I am still left with wanting to discover more. From the origins of the organisation, to its downfall. With the ability of time jumping, it can only take one person to constantly rewrite history, thankfully we have Sterling Cross.

"wolvenheartvol1_2"

Now there were several main characters that played prominent roles in this book, as well as Cross' upbringing. This comic also breaks the stereotypical boundaries, as Helsing himself, originally a monk, joined forces with two other societies in order to bring down Dracula. Three ethnic groups that despise one another, managed to put differences aside all for the greater good. I just wish more information was given in regards to not only Cross' parents, but also Sabinas’.

Once again Mad Cave Studios have produced another remarkable series, with Mark London handling the script. This story follows a young girl named Lora and her group of friends as they begin to grow up into teenagers. From days spent playing ‘make believe adventures’ and using their imagination to create new games, slowly Lora’s friend circle begins to dwindle as they each become more interested in make up, video games and finding romance. Lora on the other hand has no interest in any of these topics yet and prefers the simple things in life, like just messing around in the outdoors. Whilst reading a book on the supernatural, Lora decides to hold a séance tea party in her attic. Little did she realise that her childhood imaginary friend Alexa would reappear.

Alexa is infact a wandering ghost of a young girl that used to live in the town decades ago. As the two girls rekindle their lost friendship, they each start helping one another accept life's challenges. This is a very charming coming of age story, perfect for those aged ten and above who are starting to shy away from playing with traditional toys and games.

"seanceteaparty_1"

This is in fact the first story I have ever read by Reimena Yee and it really was delightful. With a plot that can almost instantly connect with the majority of readers, it also has the magic to bring up old memories for the older readers like myself of when they were at a similar age and going through the same challenges. This story is even more relevant in todays' society as it seems as though todays' generation of kids are getting interested in video games and pop culture at a much younger age than before. So when I first thought that this story would be ideal for those aged 12 and above, in reality we could be looking more at the 10 years old age bracket.

It is also the perfect time of year to get into a good book or series, as the winter season begins to creep in and the evenings get darker a lot earlier now. I have always enjoyed the coming of age genre of books, each of them usually has their own take on that stressful time between wanting to stay a kid forever but at the same time, wanting to be more adult. This is perhaps the first book I've read that actually involves a ghost, Alexa who helps our protagonist Lora to better understand her feelings and with just a bit of extra support is able to gather the courage to go out and try new things.

"seanceteaparty_2"

This is also a good book to perhaps read alongside your child as it does touch on a number of important subjects, like bullying, peer pressure and feeling as though they are being left behind by their friends. It is one of those stories that is there to help you create an environment for your child to be comfortable to talk openly about issues such as these.

This book was entirely created by Reimena Yee, a very talented illustrator, writer and designer originally from Kuala Lumpur but now resides in Melbourne, Australia. She is the author-illustrator of the gothic comics, "The World in Deeper Inspection", the Eisner and Mcduffie-nominated "The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya", and is also the writer of "The Makers Club" series. You can check out all her titles and current works over on her website - https://reimenayee.com

Tiến is a young boy living in America, the only child of immigrant parents from Vietnam. Having grown up in the States his entire life, his first language is English. Which unfortunately means that there is a difficult language barrier at times when he wishes to speak to his parents, as they are still trying to learn the language. In order to include them more, Tiến reads fairy tales with them every night ever since he was a little boy. The only problem is, that the one subject he wishes to talk about most isn’t found in your traditional fairy tales. So just how is Tiến going to come out to his parents?

First off, this really was an interesting story. I haven't come across many that deal with the same scenario that Tiến is living in. Born to immigrant parents, and not being fluent in the language his parents have grown up with. I can see that his parents work incredibly hard for the life they currently have, and as we see by his mothers’ actions they have been saving money for several years in order to go back to visit their families back in Vietnam. Which would act as a first meeting for Tiến and his wider family, even though he is already about twelve years old I say. In order to set their son up and give him the best start in America, they solely focussed on him having English as his first language. A difficult decision to make, as it does suggest they made a big sacrifice in regards to their identity and where they came from by not being able to pass that on to their son. The biggest barrier they face though, is this language connection and trying to find a perfect balance between both their native languages. Although his parents do try their best, they are also incredibly busy with their jobs in order to stay afloat and being able to send money back home to Vietnam to care for their ailing parents. This is a sad tale and its not completely fiction, as there are people today that still struggle with the same living standards and cultural barriers within families who have also made the dangerous journey of fleeing to another country in order to live a better life. All you have to do is look at the news.

"themagicfish_28"

Tiến seems to have some bit of understanding about the struggles his parents have gone through in order to give him the life they now have. He can see how tired his father is when he returns home from work, the odd jobs his mother has. As well as the numerous times that even just his clothes need to be mended, instead of replacing them with something new. Tiến has his own struggles as well, which include his self confidence and the guilt he feels, as he does not know how to act on his feelings towards his best guy friend. This story is also based in the 1990’s, so ideals and community values were still high and expected to be inline with what the Church thought - much like Ireland was at the time. So for Tiến to even talk about or approach anyone about his sexuality, was met with having to be reeducated and being forced to talk to the local clergyman. He not only had no support that he could reach out to, because of either a language barrier or not knowing who to trust. Combined with the sudden family tragedy, he had a lot of emotional baggage to deal with at the time. This is certainly a book worth reading, as it puts it all down to a human level and one that makes it instantaneous to connect with the characters.

"themagicfish_45"

The majority of this book is also a retelling of a fairy tale called ‘Tattercoats’, as well as versions of the Little Mermaid and Cinderella. Versions that I have not read before, but were beautifully drawn and told. They fitted in well alongside the main story, but left me wanting to read more about these children's classics by the end. Now this book isn’t entirely fiction, as it is somewhat based off of the childhood of the author. Trung Le Nguyen was born from Vietnamese Immigrants that arrived in the US. Having learnt both English and Vietnamese side by side when he was young, just like his main character they also shared the same pastime of borrowing fairy tales from the library. Which led to family discussions about the stories and eventually their language barrier developed its own balance, as they all used a hybrid of both English & Vietnamese at home. A balance which Tiến and his mother are searching for.

In order to experience this book in all its glory, you are just going to have to pick it up for yourself. As I fear I am failing to describe, just how influential this story may become for so many people. You can find the book now, in both digital and print. Even better yet, go and grab the hardback copy from your local bookstore!

From demons to werewolves, and even Dracula himself. This story follows monster hunter Sterling Cross as he steps through time in order to eradicate the hellish beasts.

The initial plot was well executed and delivered in what I thought was a captivating final battle. That last panel though, has left fans screaming for an 8th issue at least!!

"wolvenheartvol1_1"

Sterling Cross is no ordinary man, with a gypsie heritage and the blood of a vampire coursing through his veins, he often has to battle against his thirst for blood. Having learnt to feed the right beast, Cross has become one of the Organization's most prominent monster hunters. With the legend that is Van Helsing as his mentor, how could he not live up to their expectations.

Following the execution of Dracula, Van Helsing set up the Wolvenheart Organisation in order to have a team of hunters on hand to travel throughout time to erase the monsters that had escaped Hell itself during Dracula's rule. This series has many time jumping moments which could have been disastrous to follow, but was instead handled well in its deliverance making for a very enjoyable read through.

Although we don't know much about Sterling's parentage, we do see the strong ties he holds to the gypsies he was raised by.

The very same man who is also responsible for bringing the story of Battlecats to life. Alongside fellow Battlecat illustrator Alejandro Giraldo, who handled all the artwork for Wolvenheart. The art style and story for this series is obviously aimed at the Teen+ market, for it's dark themes and horror moments. It's a great read for a standalone series and I would highly recommend it if you have never checked out the studio before.

https://madcavestudios.com/product/wolvenheart-vol-1-legendary-slayer/

Overall: 8/10
Written By: Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss

Illustrated By: Jay

Published By: Titan Comics

The Great Detective Sherlock Holmes finds himself sitting on a couch in the Royal Palace, with just a mere bed sheet to cover his modesty. With his talents having been acknowledged by members of the Royal family, Sherlock has been tasked to deal with a very important and private matter, before some dreadfully embarrassing photos get leaked to the public. This is where the iconic character of Irene Adler gets introduced, but there is a twist to this story. As Ms Adler is portrayed as a very professional dominatrix, whose clients are all members of High Society - some are even members of the Royal family. Now Holmes must do all he can to persuade Ms Adler to hand over the very sensitive photographs that would ultimately ruin the image of the Royal Family for good.

It has been quite some time since I've reviewed a Sherlock Holmes graphic novel. The last one being 'A Study in Pink' back in 2017 from what I recall. 'A Study in Belgravia' is another graphic novel adaption of the hit TV series Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the lead detective. Having already seen the series, I know what direction this book was already going to take, but nonetheless it was still a very enjoyable read.

"sherlockvol1_sib1"

With Sherlock's reputation now being published in all the newspapers and even Watsons online blog. It's no wonder that his client list has now reached wider circles. Following his encounters with Moriarty, Sherlock needs another opponent that is skilled enough to keep him on his toes. Thus we have Ms Irene Adler, her first meeting with Sherlock is indeed startling to see the least and she is bolder than what I would have imagined prior to watching the show. She indeed has the skill to go toe to toe with the Detective, and can easily unarm any other individual that comes her way. However Ms Adler still manages to get into some serious trouble, as her life is now on the line when intruders decide to attack her home at the same time Sherlock and Watson are visiting.

Ms Adlers character is not only bold, but she has a brilliant mind. Although she is adaptable and appears to be in control of practically any room, her curiosity gets the better of her at times. Especially in regards to Holmes and his cases. The sort of relationship the two begin to share, leaves a black mark on Sherlock when he receives some devastating news during Christmas. For fans however it does leave a spark of hope, that Benedict Cumberbatch's version of Sherlock, may in fact have a love interest down the line. Xinyue, his older brother Qiliu and their mother are travelling along the infamous Silk Road, in search of the legendary Aweto. A rare plant that is said to cure all illnesses, there is said to be one amongst them called the Celestial Aweto that may even grant eternal life. This trio of travellers are known far and wide as the Aweto Seekers, who sell their findings to the rich and wealthy for a hefty profit. However they are also feared by many, as in order to obtain this plant they must steal it from the enormous Earth deities: the Chadolos, that many follow and protect. After one such hunt, Xinyue discovers the offspring of their prey and instead vows to protect it from his family. All the while, they are being followed by warriors from the same tribe that they just stole this little creature from. Much danger lies ahead for Xinyue, but just who can he rely on when his secret is exposed.

"thehuntison4-5"

This story is visually stunning, The Hunt Is On: Book 1 Reviewand is one that carries a unique storytelling and artstyle belonging to the author. Nie Jun was born in Qinghai, a province in the western part of China. It mostly consists of a high altitude Tibetan plateau, that is sparsely populated. However it also has a strong culture and is home to many Buddhist monks, who are renowned producers of thangka, which are religious paintings depicted on silk or cotton. Which I believe is very reminiscent of the artstyle in this series. The story also takes place in a country much similar to China, centuries ago. Much similar in ways to our own, but also more mystical and magical with the addition of giant Earth deities, large insects and similar races that seem to be a cross between humans and insects. In some ways, it kind of reminds me of the world from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

"thehuntisontheon6-7"

This is only Book One and our story is just beginning, but we have a good stable start at the moment as well as a quick introduction into our characters. From the get go, this trio seemed like an unusual bunch. Having later discovered the truth behind this ‘family’, Xinyue’s reality has shattered. With little to no information on his heritage and homeland, just what will happen to him next? His ‘brother’ Qiliu also has his own mysteries to solve. Just what exactly is he? How did he meet Xinyue and just why is he so obsessed about finding the celestial aweto?

Both Xinyue and Qiliu have their own special talents, the former is capable of controlling insects with the beating of his drums and is able to speak an ancient language that is used by the divine Chadolos. Whilst the older brother has large insect wings that protrude from his back allowing him to glide through the air. Just who exactly are these two boys?

"thehuntison8-9"

Aweto Seekers is a dying occupation, due to how difficult the job has become. Although it can wield a high profit, the Aweto have become scarce to find. These plants are found on top of a Chadolos head, and have been said to be the home of the giants’ spirit. Once removed, the Chadolo dies. In this book, we meet a tribe who have been worshipping their Chadolo as it has provided for them ever since they were once attacked by ‘wolf ravagers’. Now remember that name, as it will appear again at the end of the book and should give a big clue as to where this story will be going. I am also very curious to see where Qiliu’s story goes, as so far this is the more interesting backstory. Also it won’t be long I say, before the warriors of the tribe they attacked catch up wanting to take revenge and rescue the young chadolo.

"thehuntison10-11"

Both the story and illustrations for “Seekers of Aweto” was created by Nie Jun. As I have mentioned before, he was born in the Tibetan plateau of Qinghai in China. A remote place, but that didn’t stop this man from developing his talent for drawing and coming up with fun stories. Much of which has to do with ‘wandering’ lead characters. Having later discovered the art of cartooning from around the world, which led him to Japan where he worked as a researcher at the Manga Department of Kyoto Seika University. Since then, he has refined his artistic skill so that his work can be recognized as a ‘Chinese’ cartoon. As he wished to differentiate his work from other Japanese manga, Western comics and Korean Manhwa. Nowadays, he lives in Beijing and teaches drawing to university students whilst also working on his own books.

"witchedofbrooklyn2"

The story and illustrations were created by Sophie Escabasse, a French author and illustrator living in Montreal. She has done illustrations for many books in her career, including Florence Parry Heide and Roxanne Heide Pierce’s Spotlight Club Mysteries series (Albert Whitman); and the Freestyler Funnies series by Tom Easton (Hachette UK). This book, “Witches of Brooklyn” appears to be her first solo debut and I am sure it will be a success.

From demons to werewolves, and even Dracula himself. This story follows monster hunter Sterling Cross as he steps through time in order to eradicate the hellish beasts.

Although we don't know much about Sterling's parentage, we do see the strong ties he holds to the gypsies he was raised by.

What was once deemed as highly unimaginable in the first season, has just entered the realm of possibility.

"Sherlockvol1_sib2"

Whether you have seen the TV show adaptation or not, but have a good idea of what the infamous story of Sherlock Holmes involves - then I think you would enjoy this graphic novel release. Although this story takes place in what would be Season Two of the show, it would be best to start reading this series from the very beginning, so you can better understand the dynamic between Sherlock and his flatmate - Watson, as well as the very interesting brotherly love relationship between the two Holmes boys.

Once again, it is well worth checking out and is a must have in your collection if you are indeed a Sherlockian.

Overall: 7/10

;

Marie Curie was a highly credited and celebrated physicist & chemist. Known for her pioneering work in radioactivity and being the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in 1903. She also created the secretive Curie Society, whose mission was to support the most brilliant female scientists in the World through funding and support. This elite organisation is still recruiting talented members to this day, and has issued three invitations to a group of young college students that happen to be sharing the same dorm room.

Here we meet Simone, Maya and Taj. A group of women, each dedicated to their own fields of research, with open minds but with very little group experience. Before there can be any initiation into this secret society, these women are put through many tests and challenges along the way. One of which will include going up against a former member, whose ideals have taken her down a more self-sufficient route compared to the society's main objective.

"TheCurieSociety1"

This book celebrates many brilliant minds, showcases the many fields of study and research that one can achieve in the world of Science. As well as being full of action, it is also a great addition to have for any young girls library. To have a book that shows them that there are many opportunities and women who have already made a huge contribution to the world of science. The back of the book includes many bio’s of real life female Doctors' and Professors that I am sure were used as inspiration for the characters in this story.

Our trio of young college students come from different walks of life. Simone is the youngest student within the college and was fast tracked into freshman life due to her high intellect & research papers. However due to her young age, she lacks the confidence to easily interact and relate to many of those around her. Although I am sure she can more than likely keep up with the workload, its her social skills that need to be improved upon. Next we have Maya, a young woman from a high society family. Whose parents expect the utmost from their daughter, in terms of her grades, the connections she makes and the social circles she must join. In their eyes, nothing is more important than advancing her career and ultimating winning a Nobel Prize. And last but not least, we have Taj. This girl comes straight from the city, with a rebellious nature and some admirable free running-esque agility, she has admitted in the past to being behind some ‘graffitti like’ projects back home. She has a talent for engineering and is certainly the woman to have on hand when it comes to organising the tech for any undercover operation.

Together they first make a very unlikely team. Even beginning as simple room mates ends in instant fights, over mere noise or even cleanliness. It’s only through going on training exercises and with interacting with the mentors at the Curie Society, do these young women start to bond after some time. In fact they kind of remind me of a more modern day version of the three lead characters from the 2001 cartoon ‘ Totally Spies!’

‘The Curie Society’ was created by Heather Einhorn and Adam Staffaroni. Both of which are also co-founders of EEP - Einhorn’s Epic Productions, a multi-platform content studio. Which specializes in creating stories that showcases heroic female characters. They focus on the underserved gen-z, millennial, female and diverse fandoms, by creating character driven stories that can be scripted for podcasts, graphic novels, television, film, virtual and more.

"TheCurieSociety2"

Janet Harvey was responsible for putting pen to paper to bring this story to life. She is also an award winning writer for both comic books, film and games. Her own graphic novel - Angel City is available now from Oni Press.

We then have our artist - Sonia Liao. Who has worked on projects for BOOM! Studios, Sourcebook Fire, Red 5 Comics and EMET Comics. Her work on ‘The Curie Society’ has been a pleasure to enjoy and has added to the ease of reading the book. Not only has she illustrated a modern day college campus, but has also brought images of the past to life - from wooly mammoths to wartime espionage. It will all make sense when you read the book.

"TheCurieSociety3"

I would imagine that this book would be well enjoyed by both young girls and boys, with perhaps leaving a more lasting impression on the former of the two. For older readers, perhaps such as myself, it is quite enjoyable nonetheless. I mean when was the last time you sat down and read a book that mentioned cross breeding woolly mammoths in order to save the glaciers.

Kumiko never desired to live the rest of her life in an ‘assisted living home’. Constantly surrounded by the same old people, old news and constant badgering from nurses. So one night, she packs up her belongings and leaves the ‘home’ for good - without telling her daughters! Having found a small apartment to call her own, she spends her days exactly how she pleases - by decorating her new home by bringing life into the discarded furniture left on the street and taking her daily swim at a local pool. Free to make her own choices and eat whatever she likes. However there is a dark presence that has been following Kumiko around ever since she left the old folks home. Death’s shadow has come knocking on her door - but how long can Kumiko go without answering it?!

I absolutely adore this book! Kumiko is a sweet, little old lady who also has a devious streak in her. Having found her independence again and is now out from under the thumb of her three ‘darling’ daughters, Kumiko has gotten a second chance of life. Although she has daily reminders of how old she is now, with a failing body and weak pelvic muscles. The littlest laugh can sometimes be disastrous for this old age pensioner. However this lady still has her wits about her and is definitely as sharp as they come. All you have to do is see how she deals with a shop assistant when trying to haggle for a new vacuum. She certainly is a force to be reckoned with, and one I highly admire. It isn’t often we see characters of her age group being represented as lead characters, the only one I seem to be able to recall in recent years that had a huge success, has been the old man Carl in the animated film Up from Pixar.

"shadowlife1"

There is also another twist to this story, as an old flame comes back into Kumiko’s life. What I haven’t mentioned yet, is that Kumiko is 76 year old bi-sexual widow. Much to the surprise of her adult daughters, who believed that their late father was Kumiko’s sole relationship. Now isn’t that a twist! This quick witted old woman has escaped death many times, but he’s back to collect! What appears on the outside to others, is that Kumiko is going senile and can’t be trusted to live on her own any longer. However from Kumiko’s point of view, she has trapped the Grim Reaper in her hoover by securing it with a salt rock lamp.

"shadowlife2"

This book has been full of laughs, down-to-earth lessons about life, enjoying it even though you may be a part of the elderly demographic. It instills a lesson about respect for the older generations that came before us, that perhaps they too still have their witty moments. They have lived so long, that they have certainly picked up a trick or two that will come in handy when it comes to out maneuvering ‘death’ if he comes knocking. It’s stories like these that begin to open your eyes a bit more to those around you, that perhaps you thought were a bit too ‘senile’ to interact with. I would love to see more books like this being released by Hiromi Goto, as they really do leave a memorable impact on the reader.

Although we don't know much about Sterling's parentage, we do see the strong ties he holds to the gypsies he was raised by.

Overall: 7/10

;

This app is the host to thousands of incriminating videos of domestic violence, criminal abuse, shit kickings and even murder. All for the sake of getting a top ranked video, voted upon by the viewers so you can score a couple of grand. The app has taken the global communities by storm, with more and more younger viewers wanting to participate and contribute their own content. But just who created this site, for what purpose if not to just see the world burn?! We follow a guy named Toby who becomes so entangled in this mess, that his own moral values begin to twist whilst he is trying to make sense of all the evil around him.

This is an incredibly dialogue heavy story, where its main villain seems to hold no filter when it comes to saying everything he thinks out loud. There are also continuous time skips and flashbacks, where it can get rather confusing as to trying to follow the storyline. As apart from the date changes at the beginning of each chapter, there is no definitive style that separates the two timeframes. It does however have an interesting plot, where one man - his mind twisted from working as a mercenary overseas, creates a video hosting website whose content reflects his own ideals. With clips of brutal murders, beatings, savage attacks and mocking the justice system. Its certainly a book aimed at an older audience, for fans that enjoy the likes of The Purge perhaps.

"contraband_1"

Toby isn't anyone's hero, although he talks about saving his girlfriend - in reality the two barely know one another. He enjoys filming women in secret and once captured a pedophile on film, by giving the footage to the authorities. His good deeds more or less end there. He gets caught up with a man named Tucker Scott, the creator of Contraband. Being framed into working for him, only to end up on a man hunt for the very person he was trying to save. The chaos is intense throughout and you really do see the dark side of humanity show its wicked grin. It is also tech heavy as well, as Toby gets to know the Web designer and app developer behind Contraband. As well as a rather unique mobile phone he created, that also works as a gun. Illustrations of which are at the beginning of this book.

"Contraband" was created by Thomas Behe, the CEO of Octopus.sh, a self-sovereignty identity platform. He is also a product innovator, published author and MBA graduate of Ivey Business School, he’s launched identity solutions for Experian, Barclays, Sky and iTV, his case studies are being taught at Harvard, Ivey and Copenhagen business schools and he has also appeared in Wired, KuppingerCole and the Financial Times.

Together with artist Phil Elliot, whose other recent comic work includes TUPELO , Absent Friends & Rockpool Files for Slave Labor Graphics and Illegal Alien for Dark Horse Comics. Thomas has created this graphic novel - Contraband. Which has been described as being the “first tech fiction comic to expose the stark dangers of social media; online cyberbullying, privacy invasion, voyeur spying, fake news, trolling and corporations abusing people’s data to influence public opinion, make billions and dominate the social fabric of society.” And they ain't wrong!

"contraband_2"

This comic has raised some frightening but real live occurrences that need to be addressed. The Dark Web is real, it needs to be monitored and legislation, protocols and technology needs to be improved upon to better contain & immobilise it. This title has brought forth a topic that many may not have been aware of up to now, but it has gained the spotlight so it can be addressed. There is also talk of a follow story to Contraband that will deal with some of the topics brought up in these pages. Including the idea that what if it was entirely possible to pass over complete control of an app or website, to whoever holds the top ranked video. And what would it take for someone to reach the top, in order to gain that control.

You can catch Contraband out now in all good comic book stores and online. Whilst in the middle of penning her new book, she discovers her perfect happily ever after relationship was all a sham and quickly packs her bags to join her illustrator friend Robin on her move to San Francisco! Here our innocent young author is thrown out of her tranquil surroundings and into a new Wonderland - where her new housemates are out and proud about their kinks. Just what wonders await Alice in this dazzling new town?

I am sure we are all aware of the Lewis Carroll classic that was ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Well this story’s Alice takes herself to the Golden Gate City in search of some freedom, inspiration and distance from her toxic ex girlfriend. She is now on a journey of self discovering after a harsh taste of reality back home. Not wanting to rely on her close friend Robin, Alice takes it upon herself to find her own place, which ultimately ends up being in a shared house with a bunch of ‘interesting women’? Perhaps this will be a tale of sexual awakening and exploration for our timid Alice.

"aliceinleatherland1_1"

With only 36 pages for our first issue, it has left us with an interesting start to Alice’s next step in life as she settles down in SF. We discover that her illustrator Robin could be a possible love interest in the future, Alice has deep ties to FairyTales and wants to live her life as close to one as she possibly can. Alice also just had a massive shock when she discovered the true feelings her ex had for her and then took it upon herself to just pack up and leave all of a sudden for a new city. Alice appears to be an all or nothing gal from what I read, she has her own style which isn’t racey or controversial. Playing it safe, seeing as her profession is that of a children's author. It will also be interesting to see how her own story telling will evolve with her lifestyle change to the big city. Will this little firefly discover her light again?

So this comic series is definitely aimed at a more mature audience, as you may have guessed from the front cover. Which I must say has so many details that could be overlooked at first glance, and I am guessing may have several clues as to how this story will progress. For now we are done with the main introductions, but for the issues ahead I will be amazed if there isn’t a rauchy sex scene, a pole dance or some form of bondage. This girl Alice is in a whole new World to explore!

"aliceinleatherland1_2"

Alice in Leatherland is brought to us by real-life creative couple Iolanda Zanfardino (writer) and Elisa Romboli (artist) while they were in a pandemic lockdown together. Having found the time to sit down and work on a comic book mini series together, they created this diverse, modern romantic comedy that is bound to make a splash in the comic book industry. I’m interested to see where this story will go in further issues and just how far it is willing to illustrate on page. ‘Alice in Leatherland’ is being published by Black Mask Studios, the Los Angeles based indie publishing company.

‘The Curie Society’ will be available to buy on the 27th April from MIT Press. Pre-order it now in your local brick and mortar bookstore!

From demons to werewolves, and even Dracula himself. This story follows monster hunter Sterling Cross as he steps through time in order to eradicate the hellish beasts.

Although we don't know much about Sterling's parentage, we do see the strong ties he holds to the gypsies he was raised by.
