Burger Witch Review

Developer: Cyber752

Platform: PC (Reviewed)

Genre: Action, Simulation, Strategy

Burger Witch is a cooperative chaos cooking game. Burger Witch is developed by Cyber752 and published by indie.io. The game takes inspiration from games such as Overcooked and Plate Up but with a more whimsical twist. This game is currently only available for Windows.

Burger Witch is a game that you can play by yourself or with up to 4 players. It supports online play, where you can easily join servers that other players have created. At the time we were playing the game, Burger Witch was not extremely active, so you either will be playing it yourself or with friends who have bought the game with you. In terms of connection and lag issues, there was nothing of such present that made the game work quite smoothly.

However, there was a presence of latency in the controls that made certain scenarios, like placing plates and placing ingredients, slightly difficult. Besides finicky controls, everything else ran pretty smoothly. The tutorial was nice to follow, and the controls were not complicated at all. Only a few interaction buttons are needed.

Burger Witch embraces a whimsical cel-shading art style with a spooky, magical twist. The playable witches are cartoonish yet expressive, each with their own quirky animations, such as frantic chopping to spellcasting over orders that have been delivered. I really like the fact that their oversized witch hats and witchy robes add character to the game without making things seem like clutter on the screen. Environmental details also add a nice touch to the game, from warm candlelight to eerie green potion flasks. Everything feels witchy, which is a fun vibe to cook in. Overall, the game is nice, simple and clean, with details added only for the actual purpose of the game and UI elements and effects are nicely put into play for alerting players when the time is running out… etc. The game also features cute little sound effects to add to the atmosphere alongside a jingling witchy tune that plays throughout your run. It’s nothing too out of the ordinary but is nice to liven up the environment.

The premise of the game is to play a round where you have to deliver burgers to a certain number of customers, skeletons, could be ghouls within a certain time. The game itself plays quickly, without much stress. You need to chop certain ingredients such as tomato, lettuce, and cheese and then cook the patty and add it to the bun. Instructions are fairly simple, and you can even serve soda or a salad. Orders begin to pile up on the left-hand side, and you just need to continuously deliver orders to meet your ‘hunger’ quota.

In terms of difficulty, a single round that lasts roughly 7:30 – 8 minutes to deliver roughly 21 orders can easily be a speed run in multiplayer. After playing a round for the second time, we were easily able to split tasks, and there was no pressure from customers losing patience, which made the game much easier. I suppose the chaotic cooking environment mainly falls true for a single-player run, as juggling all tasks to complete a burger is much harder by yourself. As you earn money, after each round, you can spend it on certain items and level up your witch to help out the cooking experience even more. Burger Witch is a nice little game that has much potential coming forth.

The game itself is very cute and quite impressive that a solo dev made it entirely themselves. Of course, the game has several rooms for improvement that will make the game even more enjoyable. I think the starting price point for the game is not bad at all. You can easily pick up the game and play without really feeling the stress of the rush of what’s to come. However, I think some gameplay mechanics do need slight refinements. The developer could look into incorporating a level system or adding more elements to create a more chaotic environment. But either way, for the price point of Burger Witch, I like that the developer made a quirky game that will easily satisfy your cooking needs, with hopefully more to come in the future.

We were provided with several codes to test out Burger Witch, and some of the players had the following to say. Moody described Burger Witch as so, “Something I did not like was the camera angle being extremely uncomfortable as it would rock the screen back and forth as if you were on a ship. Besides that main dislike, I like the fact that the game is quick. You can easily get through orders without truly feeling rushed, and the game being less than 5 euros makes it a great pick-up if you want to play a cooking sim without feeling entirely stressed. I only played this game with my friends and have not tried it in single-player, but I think it’s worth it if you try to reach 100 % completionist as it gives you a greater goal to work towards in the game. I do like the addition of items you can buy that help you throughout the game, which also adds a fun, witchy vibe to the game. The visuals are quite endearing, and I would recommend Burger Witch if you are looking for something quick and easy.”

Skullcrusher had the following to say, “Burger Witch reminds me of Overcooked, and I played Burger Witch in single and multiplayer mode. The game has a very cartoony look to it; everything is very cute, bright and colourful. The sound effects and music all fit in nicely with the game. The goal of the game is to cook as many burgers as you can in the allotted time and serve them to your customers. You have to get the burger patty, cook it, place it on the burger buns on a plate, then chop your ingredients such as cheese, tomato, and lettuce, finish it with the burger bun and serve it. The game plays the same in single-player and in multiplayer; just in multiplayer, you can divide out the tasks. The game is more fun in multiplayer, and we did not have any issues when playing online. As you finish each round, you earn money, which you can buy upgrades for your kitchen. I played the game using a keyboard/mouse and a controller; the controls did not feel tight, and it felt like there was a bit of lag at the odd time. Another thing I noticed is that when I moved to the left or to the right, the camera seemed to sway a bit as if we were on a boat. The game has been developed by one person, so I think with feedback and some updates, the game can be improved. I enjoyed my time with the game and had fun playing it. I think it could be a great game for younger gamers to enjoy with their family and friends. It’s an easy game to play, and it’s not an expensive game.”

Burger Witch is a spellbinding treat if you are looking to pick up a quick game that you can enjoy by yourself or with friends. You can indulge in making endless amounts of burgers whilst embodying being a true witch. Make money, upgrade items, and be sure to deliver enough burgers to the hungry skeletons within time! Be sure to check out Burger Witch!

Overall: 6/10
