Realised in expressive 2D animation reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons, Good Heavens! combines the rich and accessible co-op survival of Don’t Starve Together with the surreal humour of Thank Goodness You’re Here!
Like manna from the Mighty Rar himself, Good Heavens!’ Steam Next Fest Demo gives would-be Chosen Ones their first blissful taste of what a full life in the imperfect paradise of Xant-Rar has to offer. Once you disembark the spaceship with your party, the first biome is yours to explore unrestricted – greet the bewildered locals, stake your claim on a location for your base, and plunder a boss-guarded dungeon… or sack it all in and find the nearest tavern
Foolishness and divinity rarely go hand in hand and, unfortunately for the increasingly disgruntled local mortals, Rar is “blessed” with both. Rar isn’t uncaring – far from it, he only wants the best for his subjects – but he is careless, and might have set off a few little apocalypses here and there. You’re the latest in a series of messiahs (emphasis on the “mess”) drafted in to clean up the dopey deity’s latest blunder.
You can’t fulfil a prophecy without wielding a bit of godly power yourself, and Rar has granted you and your fellow saviors access to six tech trees to help restore balance to Xant-Rar’s floating islands. Fell beastly bosses with Warfare, keep ‘em guessing with Trickery, mock the laws of physics with Sorcery, get cozy with Homesteading, strike out on your own with Exploration, and build your cult of personality with Influence.
The whole “saving the world” thing can be exhausting, and you’ll need somewhere to rest your freshly anointed head. Once you’ve found a suitable patch and rid it of curiously kitbashed critters like pigeon-deer and fox-salmon, you can see about raising your settlement. Construct workshops and farms, decorate your space with cosmetics, upgrade your equipment, and in no time your podunk hamlet will become a thriving citadel.
Xant-Rar is a bizarre, fractured world packed with weird creatures to discover, dungeons to raid, and disasters to avert (or cause), and Good Heavens! is all about giving you the tools to do whatever you want. Who’s going to stop you, Rar? He can’t even hold his realm together without calling in outside help. Satisfying RPG progression and a range of activities to discover like fishing, cooking, and smelting keep you and your party focused on adventuring and experimentation rather than babysitting meters and getting bogged down in busywork
