In an alternative timeline there exists a similar New York. Much like our own, with the only exception being that it has its own schools of magic. Grand buildings that give the best education in not only the common subjects of math, literature and science - but it's students are children of prophecies. Each tasked with their own unique destiny - many of which are either to vanquish evil or save entire realms.

Logan is one such student, however she unexpectedly fulfilled her prophecy at the age of 13. Now she is coming to the end of her Graduate programme, with no direction or career in sight. When she learns about her ex girlfriend achieving her happily ever after, it reawakens some old wounds. One that the new hot girl in town might be able to solve. Thing is, not everyone has achieved their prophecies yet!

This story went in a different direction than what I was expecting from the first few pages. At the beginning of the first issue, we are introduced to the young lovebirds Logan and Bailey, who are students at a magical high school. We get a quick glimpse into their relationship and the reason they both attend Destiny University. Their relationship status changed drastically over the next few years, until we met Logan again seven years later. We are mostly following her life, as she is dealing with heartache, confusion over her future and some mild sexual frustration. Her Knight in shining armor seems to appear in the form of Lilith, who saves her from what could have been a complete write off of a day.

"destinyny1_1"

So in these first two issues we delve into the complex life of Logan, her ex Bailey, a former hook up named Gia who comes back into her life and new bad girl on the block Lilith. Unfortunately for Logan, it seems her old flame Gia won't be coming BFFs with Lilith anytime soon, as they have been prophesied to vanquish one another. This final year of school has just gotten a whole lot more complicated, as Logan deals not only with adjusting to 'normal life' by searching for a career - but now her inner circle is about to split asunder. She can't seem to catch a break!

Although we haven't had any crazy magic yet, there is one familiar wizard kid amongst the students named Joe. His character is remarkably similar to Harry Potter - but just more of a snob! It's quite entertaining to be fair. Aside from Logan's storyline, we also get a quick understanding of some of the other characters including Gia, her seer Anthony, and even a cliff hanger from none other than the Dean - Ms David's. Which has me anxiously waiting to see what happens next in Issue 3.

'Destiny, NY' is brought to life by author Pat Shand (Snap Flash Hustle) and artist Manuel Preitano (DC Comics’ The Oracle Code) with an incredible limited-edition cover by Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise). Pat Shand has an incredible list of work thus far, not only stemming from comics, but also novels, film making, short stories and theatre. Manuel Preitano is not only the co-creator and illustrator for Destiny NY, but is also the artist for DC Comics The Oracle Code. The artwork in this series has been flawless thus far, the first story page had its own style where it was clear they were being filmed through a lens. We also saw our main characters as young students and then 7 years later. They had obviously changed over time, and it was depicted very well. It's very clear cut illustrations, nothing over shadowed or difficult to make out. Plenty of light and just a joy to read.

Whilst in the middle of penning her new book, she discovers her perfect happily ever after relationship was all a sham and quickly packs her bags to join her illustrator friend Robin on her move to San Francisco! Here our innocent young author is thrown out of her tranquil surroundings and into a new Wonderland - where her new housemates are out and proud about their kinks. Just what wonders await Alice in this dazzling new town?

I am sure we are all aware of the Lewis Carroll classic that was ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Well this story’s Alice takes herself to the Golden Gate City in search of some freedom, inspiration and distance from her toxic ex girlfriend. She is now on a journey of self discovering after a harsh taste of reality back home. Not wanting to rely on her close friend Robin, Alice takes it upon herself to find her own place, which ultimately ends up being in a shared house with a bunch of ‘interesting women’? Perhaps this will be a tale of sexual awakening and exploration for our timid Alice.

"aliceinleatherland1_1"

With only 36 pages for our first issue, it has left us with an interesting start to Alice’s next step in life as she settles down in SF. We discover that her illustrator Robin could be a possible love interest in the future, Alice has deep ties to FairyTales and wants to live her life as close to one as she possibly can. Alice also just had a massive shock when she discovered the true feelings her ex had for her and then took it upon herself to just pack up and leave all of a sudden for a new city. Alice appears to be an all or nothing gal from what I read, she has her own style which isn’t racey or controversial. Playing it safe, seeing as her profession is that of a children's author. It will also be interesting to see how her own story telling will evolve with her lifestyle change to the big city. Will this little firefly discover her light again?

So this comic series is definitely aimed at a more mature audience, as you may have guessed from the front cover. Which I must say has so many details that could be overlooked at first glance, and I am guessing may have several clues as to how this story will progress. For now we are done with the main introductions, but for the issues ahead I will be amazed if there isn’t a rauchy sex scene, a pole dance or some form of bondage. This girl Alice is in a whole new World to explore!

"aliceinleatherland1_2"

Alice in Leatherland is brought to us by real-life creative couple Iolanda Zanfardino (writer) and Elisa Romboli (artist) while they were in a pandemic lockdown together. Not only are they are the creative team behind A Thing Called Truth #1 but also the Alice in Leatherland series.

Hi Iolanda and Elisa, it's so wonderful to have you both here with us.

Some of our readers may not be familiar with your works, could you please tell us a bit about yourselves?

Iolanda and Elisa:

Hi ComicBuzz! We're SO honored to be on your website!

Elisa: We're the creators (Iolanda as writer and me as artist) of "Alice in Leatherland", a five-issues miniseries published by Black Mask Studios. "Alice in Leatherland" is a queer, body and sex positive romantic comedy! Previously I worked for several independent comics publishers, for Titan Comics and Square Enix as an illustrator.

Iolanda: I previously worked as a cover artist for Doctor Who, Life is Strange and Sea of Thieves comics (by Titan Comics) and for Marvel! I also published an OGN that I wrote and drew myself: "Midnight Radio" (by Lion Forge/Oni press).

"athingcalledtruth1_1"

Can you tell us about the origin of A thing called Truth?

Iolanda: I wanted to explore in a story my never-ending attempt to find a middle ground between devoting yourself body and soul to a goal and enjoying every moment with no regrets. This adds to my and Elisa's love for road-trips together and for discovering new realities and landscapes in unknown countries.

Plus, I love great movie-like gestures. But this one could be a spoiler!

How would you describe A thing called Truth?

Iolanda: I would describe it as a "chaotic road-trip adventure"! That's a story about the dream of leaving your mark on the world, about the reasons for yearning to go far away and those that will take you back home.

"athingcalledtruthb"

How did A thing called Truth find a home at Image Comics?

Iolanda: We actually just sent the project proposal to their submission email address and kept our fingers crossed! Since I started reading comics, working for Image Comics has been my dream. So when Mr Jim Valentino answered our email and told us our proposal sounded interesting I was over the moon!

What can you tell us about Doctor Magdalene Träumer?

Iolanda: Mag has devoted every waking minute of her adult life to her career and her noble goal of saving the world. Fun times are not her thing: no hanging out with friends for a beer, no friends at all for that matter, she'd rather sleep on her lab couch than going home. She hasn't even been able to find the time to sign the divorce papers her ex(asperated)-husband keeps sending her.

When the story starts, she's finally very close to making her dream come true...

"athingcalledtruth1_2"

Iolanda, when you are writing an issue of the comic, how does that work; do you write a full script?

Iolanda: I'm a hopeless perfectionist and so, yes, I write a super-full script with long descriptions and I often also do small thumbnails of the page's structure I have in mind! (I don't know how Elisa can bear me all the time)

Elisa, you are creating all of the art for the comic. What part of that process do you enjoy the most, pencils, inking or colouring?

Elisa: I really like inking, especially now that I use ink to shadow things: not long ago I used to create shadows during the coloring phase, but then I had several comic book gigs that required inks & grey tones so I had to change my artstyle a bit! I must say I feel more confident now.

"athingcalledtruth1_4"

How important is pre-ordering for an independent comic?

Elisa: I would say a lot! Especially now with all the printing and distribution issues due to the paper shortage! Several publishers decided to not do second printings anymore, so please pre-order your comics to be sure to get your copy!

How did you pick the artists for the alternative covers for the series?

Elisa: Actually, the artist for all the alternative covers is Iolanda (Since she's a cover artist too!) For issue #1 we asked for an additional cover to our super-talented colleague Mirka Andolfo!

"athingcalledtruthc"

Do you have a favourite scene from the first issue?

Iolanda: The scene I love the most in the first issue is the same one I used to keep talking about with my closest friends when I was creating the story. That in the last pages of issue #1, so I have to force myself to not talk about it to avoid spoilers!

What are you currently reading?

Elisa: I'm reading some Bande Dessinée at the moment! I love Blacksad books and Julie Rocheleau's art style! While speaking of comics, we're both very excited for Saga's return!

Iolanda: I'm writing scripts for a new story at the moment, and If I only open a comic while I'm doing this I end up seeing it only as a work documentation so I can't actually relax! (Haha-) So I'm re-reading old books instead, such as Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.

"athingcalledtruthd"

Any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

Iolanda and Elisa: Thank you so much for buying and supporting independent comics and for trusting new creators!

We would like to say a big thank you to Iolanda and Elisa for taking the time to chat with us and we wish them the best of luck with the launch of A Thing Called Truth #1 this week.

"aliceinleatherland2"

Alice is struggling to find where she belongs, not just in the big city of San Francisco but also as a newly single woman, looking to find love once more. All the while, her former book illustrator Robin is confident in her ability to hook up with anyone. However she is adamant to never get involved in a committed relationship. Through various encounters, failed dates and some self discovery - can these two fireflies find someone that will make them glow again? From the creative team of Iolanda Zanfardino and Elisa Romboli, comes Alice in Leatherland!

"aliceinleatherland3"

This was such a sweet and kinky fairytale-esque series that follows a woman named Alice as she takes one giant leap into the Wondrous Land of San Francisco! Now far from her home in Yosemite, Alice is now in the big city. Full of people with big personalities, a daunting dating scene, an expensive living situation and her chance to fully accept and explore her own sexual journey. With plenty of LGBTQ+ people living in San Fran, it’s a wide dating pool out there to explore. With a helping hand and some guidance from her new housemates, Alice eventually just dives right in. All the while struggling with a writer's block on her current book, one that will inevitably reflect her own experiences in SF.

"aliceinleatherland4"

Then we have her illustrator Robin, a woman that avoids commitment, is out there to satisfy herself and who also has a strict set of rules when it comes to hooking up. Although the pair have known one another for some time now, starting back in Yosemite. They have never hooked up, it’s when they both move and go their separate ways in San Fran do the two start to fall for one another. As though fate and the city are pulling them together. It’s through seeing how Alice begins to evolve in the big city, through her new job, attitude, dating profile and sexy new look - does it hit Robin that she will do anything now to be her Prince Charming. Robin goes through her own metamorphosis, most of which is mentally as she reflects on her lifestyle and commitment choices.

Having found the time to sit down and work on a comic book mini series together, they created this diverse, modern romantic comedy that is bound to make a splash in the comic book industry. I’m interested to see where this story will go in further issues and just how far it is willing to illustrate on page. ‘Alice in Leatherland’ is being published by Black Mask Studios, the Los Angeles based indie publishing company.
