We played through the first story: Plymouth Point - A Missing Person Hunt. In this story, Ivy Isklander has gone missing and it is our job to find her as we have recently just joined Plymouth Point Resident’s watch.

My team consisted of 4 players in total. One person on the team was sharing their screen as we looked through the clues. I found the experience to be very fun and interesting. It started off as a video call with an old lady which made it seem like it was real. The clues were easy to follow and were not very confusing. The only thing that was a bit obstructed was the one part where we were to find the second part of a recording but we could not figure out the puzzle until the clue was sent to us via chat.

"isklander1"

As another player on the team, what I liked about the game is that it was easy to play and ran smoothly. There were parts where things were easier to find, and solve and some weren't that easier. I personally really enjoyed playing and can’t wait to play the others!

"isklander1"

To be honest, I have never been in an escape room, so I did not know what to expect. I did see the trailer for how to play Isklander. I am happy to say it was a lot of fun and I did enjoy myself and it was much better than what I thought when I was looking at the trailer. To be fair as this was the first part of the trilogy, I did enjoy the setup and the story. I would have loved for it to have a few more live-action performances; as I think they were so engaging and hooked me in. I did have the odd network issue (that could have been on my end) but it was a little annoying. The time seemed to go so quickly but that could have been because I was having such a good time with my team trying to solve the escape room. I would like to play the other two parts of the trilogy to see what else Swamp Motel can do with this: reality adventure. I would recommend anyone who likes the idea of a virtual escape room to check it out with their friends and family, I am sure they will have a lot of fun.

The Isklander trilogy is an alternate reality adventure, a virtual escape room. The trilogy is made by the Swamp Motel, an immersive entertainment company and the experience makers behind the London based Resident Evil 2 escape room / haunted house hybrid.

In the virtual escape room, you scrumage through social media posts, hack into emails, scavenge through websites, make phone calls. It’s a combination between fiction and reality, an augmented reality approach to the game. The escape room can be played with up to 6 players. You all are present in a video meeting where you and your team are presented with the case you need to solve in under 90 minutes.

Isklander makes great use of the theme of Lonon and the shady going-ons (in this story) to help describe a wonderfully crafted story. The story has a level of intrigue that makes you want to hunt down each clue and solve it. In some instances, you will have to comb over the evidence more than once to find the clues. The team-based activities make this a joy. The acting and voice-overs all add to the mysterious going ons, it’s all superbly produced and presented.

The game is presented using a classical art-style animation, it does remind of some Disney animation. It is reminiscent of many side-scrolling platforms in terms of visuals. It's a genre that has found a footing in indie games after being a mainstay on 8 and 16-bit consoles.

"clanoconall1"

Clan O'Conall makes great use of Celtic mythology which helps set the scene for the entire game. If you have played any old-school platformers or indie platformers, the mechanics and gameplay are familiar. Levels consist of worlds where you have to navigate platform sections, puzzles whilst switching through the three playable characters. Each character has skills and attributes to navigate different aspects of levels. The player has to use their skills to solve and progress through levels towards the bosses. There is a satisfying feeling to progressing through each level and a sense of accomplishment. The game is enjoyable as it mixes action and puzzles seamlessly throughout. It has the joyous feel of playing a well-crafted platform action game.

Controls are super simple and responsive, you feel in total control and the learning curve is low. The game is forgiving in terms of navigating the platforming sections.

"clanoconall2"

The graphics whilst simple are polished and bring the game to life, it's simply clean and suits the game to a tee. Each environment has its look and feels with different creatures to battle as well.

Each of the three characters has a levelling up system where you can build the character into whichever playstyle suits you. The character levelling is straightforward and isn't in-depth as an RPG.

"clanoconall3"

Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag delivers a fantastic vibrant action platformer that looks great. The gameplay is solid and is easy to pick up and get stuck into. Celtic mythology helps to give a backdrop to each level and ties the story. During the game, players will have to swap between three characters to navigate enjoyable levels. Each level has a great mix of platforming, action and puzzle gameplay. It's a fantastic fun platformer that I loved playing.

The game centres around Morgan Carter and the journey through Dreamlands to get her essence back. Morgan's essence was stolen; by her great-great-grand-uncle, Randolph Carter, who is trying to enslave the Dreamlands for his purposes.

"dreamcycle1"

Dream Cycle can be played in several perspectives first-person, third-person or hybrid of both (dynamic camera angle chooses what it sees as fit). The option to switch modes is in the menu. Once you decide what view to take, you are on your merry way to explore this labyrinth of levels. Dream Cycle is a mix of a platformer, shooter and stealth game with some magic thrown in for good measure. For the player, this means you can adapt and play the game as suits you. You can go gung-ho or take a stealthy approach. I ended up playing a mix of both to get a feel of your weapons and game mechanics. I found the controls straightforward and intuitive. I liked the mixture of magic and guns. It was jarring at first but grew on me fairly quickly! As you progress through the levels, you gain more magic spells to help you battle the creatures at each dark corner.

"dreamcycle3"

The mix of platform elements, fighting, and shooting constitute the core of the game. There are climbing elements, astral projection, and teleportation to help you navigate through the adventures. The adventures (levels) are short and impactful. You take the approach that best suits the game style you want to use. I loved the exploration and discovery of levels. Levels do have lots of weapons and power-ups to find. I enjoyed the choice of a bow, handgun or machine gun as your choice of ranged weapons, unexpected but fun.

"dreamcycle2"

It is an early access game with the latest patch of 1.1.6 at the time of this preview. I didn't encounter any bugs or issues on my playthroughs. The world and the cel-shaded art style mixed with magic elements provides a wonderful; canvas for Morgan to explore. The game has tons of adventures and levels to navigate. I loved the mix of climbing and traversing terrain while using spells such as astral projection to navigate parts of the level to find the best way to scale huge castles. The environments and graphics are magical and intriguing. I did find the similar enemies a bit repetitive at times. I would have liked a bit more of a story-driven narrative to levels instead of just choosing them from the map. In totality, I enjoyed the game mechanics, the levels and the world. I am looking forward to seeing future updates in this game and what the game will ultimately become.

Death's Door follows the trial and tribulations of a soul reaper, crow, as you progress through a series of puzzle-filled and action-packed levels. You play as a crow who has a job to get souls from creatures you encounter. Your job soon becomes a massive adventure.

As the crow reaper, you have assigned missions where you must collect the souls. The game starts in a sombre mood in a world lacking colour apart from the bright red sword you carry. However, before you know it the levels are filled with colours and you roam a plush world. The game does a fantastic job to tread between sombreness and being upbeat too.

"deathsdoor1"

The game starts with minimal instructions. I enjoyed this as it allows the player to explore and get used to the game. However, before you can do that, you have your first boss battle which turns into a hack and slash. You use the trusty bright red sword to kill the swathes of enemies that you encounter. The game shifts from dungeons that are a mix of hack and slash to dungeons full of puzzles. The game manages to make both gameplay elements enjoyable and challenging. Each level, puzzle and enemy get progressively more difficult, the instructions and assistance are kept to a minimum so it's up to the player to figure out the nuances of the game. While this seems subtle, it makes the game much richer, and the gameplay experience is gripping. I found it difficult to stop playing the game once I started.

The bosses are amazing; there is a real sense of accomplishment when you beat them. The bosses are a strange combination of weird, funny, and just plain odd. They are wonderfully rendered and full of detail.

"deathsdoor2"

I have to say I love the interconnected nature of each level. This gives a real feel that you are in a singular world and this helps to tie story elements too. Puzzles and unreachable sections become open as you progress through the game. The game does challenge the player to figure out what is available to do throughout the game.

The story is left purposely vague, and you will gather small morsels of information as you progress through levels and bosses. This helps to build up suspense, intrigue and tension. Each level helps to uncover more detail and builds the story into something of interest. The story has a mix of twists and turns with a beautiful soundtrack that helps to hammer the underlying theme.

"deathsdoor3"

The NPCs and your interactions act as the humour in the game and provide light-heartedness to the sombreness in the game, they also help drive the narration of the game too.

As this game is an indie game, there aren't any voice-overs. This is the only thing I think is missing for me, but the gameplay and story make up for it.

"deathsdoor4"

Death's Door combines a wonderful action-based game with a whole host of puzzles to solve. It has a brilliant mix of hack and slash, a beautifully crafted world that is intriguing and a joy to explore. Every aspect of the game has been designed impeccably, every small element including level design should be applauded. It's a wonderful game that excels in all elements: gameplay, story, music score and fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the game from start to end, I just found the game design and gameplay refreshing and such a joy.

Each level has a great mix of platforming, action and puzzle gameplay. It's a fantastic fun platformer that I loved playing.

On your way home, you encounter a whole array of challenges that will block your journey home.

The Plane Effect combines the unique art style with an isometric view that gives the game an amazing; look and feel. The art style is gorgeous and sublime. The character has a minimalistic look - you wear glasses and carry around a briefcase as you navigate this fantastic dystopian world. You leave your boring office job to discover this crazy world ahead of you. The world is a mix of bright, beautiful, with rich scenic levels that are complemented, with dark and barren levels too. All the levels are fantastic full of little details that make them seem more immersive. The deep rich sound effects and an intriguing dystopian world help drive the story.

"planeeffect1"

Gameplay is a mix of platformer and puzzles to solve. Primarily, you can run, walk, jump and use items. The use item action varies depending on the puzzle you are solving and items available in each area; this is environment-dependent. There are issues in certain sections of the game where you must backtrack for items which can be tedious at times. You may find the puzzles trickier than they first seem too. The game does have a mix of random events where the player; ends up being transported to different environments, which can be jarring at times. It does, however, add a nice break to regular gameplay and is novel at first.

"planeeffect2"

The game has three modes: normal, narrative hint and guided. Normal mode gives no prompts or assistance when trying to solve puzzles. It's all up to you to figure how to navigate each area. The guided mode provides an indicator that will mark the next puzzle to solve in the form of a line that directs you. You can change the mode type in-game if you get stuck or if you want more of a challenge. I primarily played the normal mode, which does require patience and for the player to discover every part of each level.

"planeeffect3"

The art style and the isometric gameplay view is unique. I can't fault the visuals, the sound effects and general level design. The art style and level design are gorgeous. There is a huge variety of environments to keep the game fresh. While the game mechanics seem straightforward, they change depending on the items available in each section. Depending on your game mode, your experience will vary greatly. Normal is for the people who want a challenge and want to figure it all out for themselves. Narrative hints and guidance makes the game much easier to navigate. I did enjoy the game, but I did feel some events were repetitive at times. At times you must backtrack for clues and to pick up items which can be tedious at times. I did like playing a puzzle focus with very few cues to assist. The game is about discovery and exploration in a beautiful dystopian world.

Super Sami Roll is the wonderfully bright platform/action game from indie developers Sonzai games. It's inspired; by a host of '80s and '90s platform games.

Super Sami Roll lands somewhere in between Marble Madness and Super Monkey Ball from a game mechanics perspective. You take the form of a ball that rolls through wonderfully rendered 3D worlds; each section has its theme from deserts to pyramids and a frozen world. I have to say the 3D worlds remind me of Super Mario 64, it's very reminiscent to me, but that's due to the 3D nature of the world full of bright colours and wonderful characters. The map reminds me of Super Mario 3, while the music and splash screens of the levels remind me of Sonic. The gameplay's a mix of Super Monkey Ball and Marble Madness. You guide your character through lush areas to finish the levels and face the boss. Pixel art helps to get across this picturesque world.

"supersamiroll1"

Each section map area has multiple levels where you will have to use your wits and skills to navigate. Game mechanics are introduced; slowly as you progress through levels to allow for some mastery before the; introduction of the next game mechanic. Game mechanics are roll, rob, jump, and grab items. The levels consist of a mix of speed runs and accuracy where you must be precise as opposed to quick; this is layered with platform pieces too. It's a healthy mix of platformer, fast action puzzler, and frantic speed runs. The difficulty can be; changed to cater for how much of a challenge you want.

"ersamiroll2"

While the game is inspired; by a host of platformers and action games, there is plenty in the game that makes it unique. With the numerous game mechanics and the use of various environments, while reminiscent of a host of classic games. There are plenty of unique elements that make it stand on its own feet. You will get annoyed at the odd camera position where your; platform is obstructed by; your camera. It does have a camera issue, like most 3D platformers. The camera angles in 3D platformers have never been perfect and; this is no exception, but this is the only minor teething issue. The soundtrack, level design and sound effects all work well; it has that chaotic sense of fun.

"supersamiroll3"

Super Sami Roll is a bright and fun platformer action game that draws from the past but is, updated for modern gaming. It's chaotic fun with lots of ups and downs. The game has a learning curve that will require you to put in the time, which means it will be challenging but, the addition of varying difficulty means you can cater it; to your needs. I loved playing something; that isn't novel in modern games while being a homage to some classic games.

The game runs at 60 FPS on the Switch. It's currently priced; at $14.99.

Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag is an indie action platformer from HitGrab Inc. The game is in the finalists of the Nordic Discovery contest. As the title of the name game suggests, it's based on Celtic mythology and uses it for the setting of the game.

The narrative hint mode gives prompts as to what needs to be done next, usually in the form of an icon above the player.

Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag is an indie action platformer from HitGrab Inc. The game is in the finalists of the Nordic Discovery contest. As the title of the name game suggests, it's based on Celtic mythology and uses it for the setting of the game.
