From demons to werewolves, and even Dracula himself. This story follows monster hunter Sterling Cross as he steps through time in order to eradicate the hellish beasts. This time however, may be his final fight as he comes face to face with the Queen in Black.

This volume includes the entire 7 issue series of Wolvenheart, a comic series that was full of excitement from start to finish. With a number of surprises thrown in, we get just a glimpse of what Sterling Cross' life was. With intriguing character backgrounds, which I wish were explored even further as I am still left with wanting to discover more. The initial plot was well executed and delivered in what I thought was a captivating final battle. That last panel though, has left fans screaming for an 8th issue at least!!

"wolvenheartvol1_1"

Sterling Cross is no ordinary man, with a gypsie heritage and the blood of a vampire coursing through his veins, he often has to battle against his thirst for blood. Having learnt to feed the right beast, Cross has become one of the Organization's most prominent monster hunters. With the legend that is Van Helsing as his mentor, how could he not live up to their expectations.

Following the execution of Dracula, Van Helsing set up the Wolvenheart Organisation in order to have a team of hunters on hand to travel throughout time to erase the monsters that had escaped Hell itself during Dracula's rule. This series has many time jumping moments which could have been disastrous to follow, but was instead handled well in its deliverance making for a very enjoyable read through. From the origins of the organisation, to its downfall. With the ability of time jumping, it can only take one person to constantly rewrite history, thankfully we have Sterling Cross.

"wolvenheartvol1_2"

Now there were several main characters that played prominent roles in this book, as well as Cross' upbringing. Although we don't know much about Sterling's parentage, we do see the strong ties he holds to the gypsies he was raised by. This comic also breaks the stereotypical boundaries, as Helsing himself, originally a monk, joined forces with two other societies in order to bring down Dracula. Three ethnic groups that despise one another, managed to put differences aside all for the greater good. I just wish more information was given in regards to not only Cross' parents, but also Sabinas’.

Once again Mad Cave Studios have produced another remarkable series, with Mark London handling the script. The very same man who is also responsible for bringing the story of Battlecats to life. Alongside fellow Battlecat illustrator Alejandro Giraldo, who handled all the artwork for Wolvenheart. The art style and story for this series is obviously aimed at the Teen+ market, for it's dark themes and horror moments. It's a great read for a standalone series and I would highly recommend it if you have never checked out the studio before.

https://madcavestudios.com/product/wolvenheart-vol-1-legendary-slayer/

Overall: 8/10

As Ireland heads into its second lockdown of the year, at least I have my October SoKawaii box to enjoy over the next few weeks. This months’ theme is focused on the Spooky season as Halloween is just around the corner. Although this year is going to be a very down played celebration, I have the popcorn bought and the list of movies lined up to enjoy on All Hallows Eve! Also did you know that Halloween originated in Ireland? It’s true!

So onto this months’ box, we have 100% licensed products from Studio Ghibli, Sanrio and DoReMi. With a number of household and stationary items included, it really is a practical bunch of gifts. I mean I see the plush as well needed during these unsettling times.

So let’s get onto the important information shall we? SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 6 to 8 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts. https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/ And at the moment, they are amongst one of the only subscription boxes that are still able to reach your door no matter what country you are in! *cough cough I now have 8 months of Nihon Box crates stuck in Japan due to Japan Post still not shipping to Ireland*

"sokawaiioctober2020_1"

Our first gift in this month's box is this adorable Halloween themed Kuromi plush from Sanrio. Which is in fact my very first Kuromi plush, which I am delighted about. Where Kuromi usually sports a black and purple theme, for this Fall season, she is switching out her purple for the Pumpkin Orange look. Although not my favorite look or her’s, it is still adorable and well made. On the back there is a small zipper, which hides a very small pocket which might just hide a coin or two and nothing more. There is also a keychain on top that allows you to hang it from your bag, a hook or even your bedpost.

"sokawaiioctober2020_2"

On to our second gift, next up we have another Sanrio Halloween themed item in the form of this Cinnamoroll pouch. This is the second month in a row now we have gotten a Sanrio pouch, although this one is larger in size and of better quality - in all honesty how many pouches does one person need?! The design is adorable, with a spooky looking Cinnamoroll and background. With a strong zip and decent size pouch, you could easily fill this up with all that spare cash we all have or just full of candy!

We are now half way through this box and SoKawaii have added a bit of a throw back to what would be classed as an old anime now. They have added a fold out memo pad from ‘Magical Doremi’, a magical girl series that first debuted back in 1999 that is still being adapted even today. This is very high quality and looks like it must have come from a pop up store, as I imagine it would be pretty rare to find something from this franchise in stores very often. This product is available in two designs, which has 6 different memo pads inside that correspond to each character.

"sokawaiioctober2020_4"

We are now on to the first of our Studio Ghibli items, with this 500ml tumbler. It’s decorated all round with the classic Totoro characters and a forest theme, it doesn’t have anything that actually themes it exclusively to Halloween or even Fall. In fact you could easily use this all year round. It comes with a straw, a screw-on lid and is BPA free. It is also very simple to clean, but I wouldn’t chance putting it in the dishwasher as I would be afraid the design would come off.

"sokawaiioctober2020_5"

Our second Studio Ghibli item is this adorable set of Jiji chopsticks, featuring the iconic black cat from Kiki’s Delivery Service. These bamboo chopsticks are essential when it comes to eating that next Cup Noodle in the middle of the night, in fact what will be the first meal you eat with these chopsticks? Let me know in the comments below or on our social media. It is also not dishwasher safe, so once again this product is best to hand wash.

"sokawaiioctober2020_6"

And now our final item is this Sanrio Candy Mold featuring My Melody. This is our third kitchen item this month and is perfect for those that love making their own sweet treats. These molds look like they will make some adorable chocolate characters, not sure I have the patience to even give it a go though as I may just end up eating the melted chocolate halfway through the recipe.

And there we have it folks, that was October’s SoKawaii box. Kinda surprised they didn’t include some sort of sweet treat, instead they included a chocolate mould. Overall I really enjoyed this box, simply for the plush and tumbler. The rest was just a bonus.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. At the moment, SoKawaii are shipping their boxes via DHL as Japan Post is still not allowing worldwide postage from Japan. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 MONTH – $35.00/€31.77mo

Now if you liked everything you saw in this review of October’s box, rest assured that the items are different every month, for the most part. Each box has 6 to 8 items included and a few of them will be revealed online through SoKawaiis’ social media as the weeks go by. November’s box theme is “Kira Kira Night”, which will feature goods from Pokémon, Sanrio and Kirby, with a few of the products included already announced across their social media.

With his talents having been acknowledged by members of the Royal family, Sherlock has been tasked to deal with a very important and private matter, before some dreadfully embarrassing photos get leaked to the public. This is where the iconic character of Irene Adler gets introduced, but there is a twist to this story. As Ms Adler is portrayed as a very professional dominatrix, whose clients are all members of High Society - some are even members of the Royal family. Now Holmes must do all he can to persuade Ms Adler to hand over the very sensitive photographs that would ultimately ruin the image of the Royal Family for good.

It has been quite some time since I've reviewed a Sherlock Holmes graphic novel. The last one being 'A Study in Pink' back in 2017 from what I recall. 'A Study in Belgravia' is another graphic novel adaption of the hit TV series Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the lead detective. Having already seen the series, I know what direction this book was already going to take, but nonetheless it was still a very enjoyable read.

"sherlockvol1_sib1"

With Sherlock's reputation now being published in all the newspapers and even Watsons online blog. It's no wonder that his client list has now reached wider circles. Following his encounters with Moriarty, Sherlock needs another opponent that is skilled enough to keep him on his toes. Thus we have Ms Irene Adler, her first meeting with Sherlock is indeed startling to see the least and she is bolder than what I would have imagined prior to watching the show. She indeed has the skill to go toe to toe with the Detective, and can easily unarm any other individual that comes her way. However Ms Adler still manages to get into some serious trouble, as her life is now on the line when intruders decide to attack her home at the same time Sherlock and Watson are visiting.

Ms Adlers character is not only bold, but she has a brilliant mind. Although she is adaptable and appears to be in control of practically any room, her curiosity gets the better of her at times. Especially in regards to Holmes and his cases. The sort of relationship the two begin to share, leaves a black mark on Sherlock when he receives some devastating news during Christmas. For fans however it does leave a spark of hope, that Benedict Cumberbatch's version of Sherlock, may in fact have a love interest down the line. What was once deemed as highly unimaginable in the first season, has just entered the realm of possibility.

"Sherlockvol1_sib2"

Whether you have seen the TV show adaptation or not, but have a good idea of what the infamous story of Sherlock Holmes involves - then I think you would enjoy this graphic novel release. Although this story takes place in what would be Season Two of the show, it would be best to start reading this series from the very beginning, so you can better understand the dynamic between Sherlock and his flatmate - Watson, as well as the very interesting brotherly love relationship between the two Holmes boys.

Once again, it is well worth checking out and is a must have in your collection if you are indeed a Sherlockian.

Overall: 7/10

Author: Amy Crabtree

Illustrated By: Amy Crabtree

Format: Paperback

Page Count: 300

Genre: Travel-Guide

Published By: Self published

Have you ever dreamed of going to Japan, but have no idea how to start planning? When would be the best time to go, where do you look for the best deals on flights and accommodation and in what area would you prefer to stay? It’s really a lot to think about, the stress can build up and start to take the excitement away when you are in the middle of trying to plan your dream trip. Well fret no more as thanks to the wonderful Amy Crabtree, a UK fashion designer and founder of ‘Cakes with Faces’, she has documented the past ten years of her travelling experience to Japan both in her YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/cakeswithfaces) and this very book. It’s filled with not only practical advice, but travel ideas and insight into some hidden spots to visit. As well as including space for you to make a trip planner and travel journal.

This may be a very niche book, but will definitely be more than useful for anyone planning on taking a trip of a lifetime over to Japan. The author of this incredibly practical guidebook, has been travelling to Japan for the last decade. As many of you may know, Amy Crabtree is the founder behind ‘Cakes with Faces’. An eye-catching and colorful booth that you have more than likely seen at many conventions over in the UK over the past number of years - mostly at the MCM Comic Con events. She has also been featured countless times in the UKs leading otaku culture publication - Neo Magazine. If you have ever seen her t-shirt designs, you would have guessed right that she gets most of her inspiration from the many kawaii aspects that can only be found in Nippon!

From the front cover alone, it is visually eye catching. With her own iconic 'Cakes with Faces' logo above the title and her unique art style ever present - just look at the cute faces on those sushi! Without having known of the brand before, I would certainly go and pick up this book if I ever came across it. I also enjoy the added detail used on the page edges, as there is a red tint to them that looks great when you have the book closed. It just gives it more character.

"cakeswithfaces1"

So this book mostly focuses on your trip to Tokyo, with very helpful guides on the local customs, types of places to stay, ideal times to visit temples and how best to get around the city. As well as tons of more information, which I am amazed this book wasn't more than the 300 pages. It's so full of colour, helpful links to websites and videos that go into more detail on certain destinations. There's even recommendations for other YouTube channels to check out, which the author found useful when planning her trips. Many of which I already follow, so it was nice to know the author and I have the same common interest.

The bit I found most helpful were the blank pages provided, where as you are reading the guide - you can also start planning your trip. The book is also a handy enough size to keep in your carry on and take with you on your holiday. The tone in which it was written is helpful and cheerful. As though you were talking to a friend. A far cry from the cold and factual feeling I have gotten from many other travel guides I have picked up over the years. This really is a breath of fresh air!

The most incredible thing about this book is that it was entirely crowd funded in under 24 hours over on KickStarter. This was certainly a fan funded project, but was one that would not have been possible without the vast knowledge, experience and sheer devotion to putting pen to paper from the author. I wouldn't mind seeing a follow up to this book in a few years, as Japan is an ever changing country and even the likes of Akihabara have started to change in recent months.

If you enjoyed this small review, then make sure to check out the book in the link below. On the Cakes with Faces website you will also find tons of kawaii merch from t-shirts to dresses, pins, jewellery and cushions. All with the cutest of designs, not only inspired by Japan, but also hamsters and the pyramids.

This books is available to buy exclusively through her website at: https://www.cakeswithfaces.co.uk/product/japan-travel-guide-book/

Overall: 10/10

We are now 9 months into this incredibly unpredictable year, but thankfully we still have SoKawaii arriving at our doorsteps each month with no hassle. This month’s theme is “Too Kawaii For School”, with perfect timing as schools and colleges have just started to reopen again. The items inside are there to help you as you prepare to go back for another year of education, featuring some products from Sailor Moon, Sanrio and Pokemon!

"sokawaiiseptember2020_1"

The largest item we have this month and is no doubt the one you will spot the second you open your box, is this Cinnamoroll Sakura bag from Sanrio. This large plush handbag is fairly practical as it has a decent size pocket inside which will be able to fit your phone and perhaps a few pens or a small wallet. It will be even more practical for students as a pillow they can get some sleep on whilst waiting around in college after a session the night before. This is sure to be a very sought after bag come RAG or Freshers week. The only downside is that its’ white, which will make it almost impossible to keep clean whilst travelling.

"sokawaiiseptember2020_2"

Our next two items are also from Sanrio, so let’s begin with our guaranteed Kuromi pouch. This is actually the first Kuromi item I have been lucky enough to receive ever since I started my subscription in April 2019. With this pouch you could use it for a number of things, from carrying make-up to toiletries, stationary or even some coins. It’ll no doubt serve some purpose.

Our third item features My Melody, who is Kuromi’s rival within Sanrio. We get a pair of Magnet clips in the shape of My Melody's head which are ideal to use both on the fridge or on a magnet memo board. The other suggestions given on the packaging include using it as a money clip or as a bookmark. They are useful for holding notes on the fridge, especially those that include those all important exam dates and holidays!

"sokawaiiseptember2020_3"

Moving on, we now have our Pokémon item. Which was the already announced Pikachu mug from the Pokémon Girly Collection. This white ceramic mug thankfully arrived in one piece, although short in stature it will still be more than capable of getting that much needed coffee into you each morning. As well as those well deserved hot chocolates as we get closer and closer to the Christmas season. Best to wash this by hand though, as it may be difficult to locate a similar one if it ends up broken.

"sokawaiiseptember2020_4"

We are now onto our final two items, both of which belong in the stationary section. First up we have a Sailor Moon Crystal pen from Dr. Grip. This 0.5mm mechanical pencil is stunning, with two shades of pink on the outside, the inner design showcases both Sailor Moon and Chibi Moon together. Seeing as it’s a mechanical pencil, it should be possible to find refills fairly easily so you can keep using this pen for years to come! It is definitely a must have item for your studies this year!

Following that we have a clear file from Sumikko Gurashi. This item was available in six designs, compared to the other items in this box are all guaranteed in every crate! Now I’m not a massive fan of clear files, but I can see their uses. The design really comes to life as soon as you put a sheet of paper in there. Perfect if you end up getting handouts during class and don't want to have them get all mixed up in your bag. Although a normal poly pocket would do the same job, it certainly wouldn't be as cute as this clear file!

And there we have it folks, that is the end of the September SoKawaii box review. How did ye find it? Pleasant I hope! This month feels like all the focus was mostly on the plush bag and cup. I’m hoping that next month we might get a better variety of items. I honestly don’t think my shelves could take another cup being added. Let me know in the comments below or on our social media, which item was your favorite and if you have subscribed to SoKawaii as well! Would love to hear from you all.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. At the moment, SoKawaii are shipping their boxes via DHL as Japan Post is still not allowing worldwide postage from Japan. So that’s why at the moment, I have 6 months of Nihon Box stuck in a warehouse in Tokyo. Fingers crossed I can actually get them at some point this year! Thankfully this hasn’t been the case for SoKawaii, which is a blessing! Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

Each box has 6 to 8 items included and a few of them will be revealed online through SoKawaiis’ social media as the weeks go by. With the reality of a new family dynamic in front of her and the shocking news that her much loved family home by the lake now has to be shared with her mothers’ replacement - Becky storms off to her hideout. Whilst all this family drama is unfolding, a group of escaped prisoners have made their way to her front door. The murderous convict Dominick (played by the well known comedic actor - Kevin James) stops at nothing in order to recover his hidden loot - a key that will unlock everything he was worked towards for the Neo-Nazi Brotherhood. With the devil and his minions now at Becky's front step - this is the perfect opportunity for her to release all her bent up anger in some masterful killing sequences.

This is perhaps the first time Kevin James has ever played such a serious role, and right in at the deep end by portraying a Neo-Nazi convict no less! Kevin is known for his numerous appearances in both TV and Film playing the leading role or within the main cast of countless comedic productions. The most I ever saw him be serious and put up a fight was in 2012’s ‘Here Comes The Boom’ when he dons the boxing gloves in order to raise some much needed funds for a school music programme. ‘Becky’ is an entirely different ballgame, James certainly brings his A-Game to this role and shows the audience that he can do much more than play the ‘funny guy’. Not once in his role did he show weakness or regret, instead he stood his ground with his characters’ twisted ideals and went full force, holding nothing back in order to get a hold of his ‘key’. It’s a shame he picked the entirely wrong weekend to break into this house!

"becky_2"

The main star of this film and incredible young talent is Lulu Wilson, who plays the demonic Becky. At just 14 years old, she already has an established film career having started back in 2012. Her most well known roles include playing Marian in the Sharp Objects mini TV series and the young version of Shirley in the Haunting of Hill House. For me, it was her role as Diana and Rikers’ daughter Kestra in Star Trek: Picard. This young lady certainly has a bright career ahead and has already demonstrated what a wide variety of characters she can bring to life. I had such compassion towards Lulus’ character Becky at the beginning of the film, and did in fact completely disagree with the way her father handled the situation in regards to announcing his engagement. Unfortunately for Becky, that conversation was not the worst thing to happen to her that night as the senseless violent rampage began and this little ‘chipmunk’ turned into a killer. Her fierce anger, mindset and imaginative killing techniques, remind me a lot of X-23 (Laura) in the final Wolverine movie: Logan.

"becky_3"

There were a number of recognisable cast members in this film that I wasn’t expecting to see. We had actor Joel Hale playing Becky's father Jeff, most people would remember him from the TV show ‘Community’. For those of us that just happened to watch all of ‘Tiger King’ at the beginning of Lockdown, would definitely have watched the follow up episode where Joel interviewed several former employees of Joe Exotic’s zoo after the success of the Netflix show. Joel’s acting in this film was spot on, his characters actions however were shocking at first, but he later redeemed himself when he went head to head against the convicts. We also had Amanda Brugel paying Kayla, the new woman in Jeff’s life. Her portrayal of a protective mother was Oscar worthy, as she made sure to always protect her child from harm and even managed to hide the truth about Becky’s identity at the beginning of the film. We also have the very recognisable Robert Maillet playing Apex, one of the escaped convicts. Built like a brick house and towering over every one of the cast members, at first glance I knew it was the same actor from the very iconic fighting scene in the boat yard against Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes back in 2009. To this day, those fight scenes have stood the test of time. Would you also believe that Robert is a former WWF Wrestler! He performed under the ring name Kurrgan back in the late 90s and is in fact 7ft tall! Thankfully his acting lived up to his onscreen presence, hopefully we’ll be seeing more of him in the future.

""

So we have intense action scenes, some imaginative killing tactics that although have been taken from several different films, still managed to leave a massive impact. Followed by great suspense, shocking blows and story twists, as well as some downright brilliant acting from the cast. Then we have the plot - this I had several issues with. Sure enough for some reason in the past, our master criminal managed to store away a very intricate looking key in a bit of brickwork in the foundations of a house. As to why that particular location - no idea. What was the key supposed to open - still, no idea. The big plot was to find the key and what were they actually going to do with it - yeah, still clueless on that one. With zero information on how Dominick actually ended up in jail, what his connection to the Neo-Nazi’s was and what the inevitable goal would be, that still remains a mystery. I don’t know if this film was supposed to be entirely from Becky’s viewpoint, but even if they added like another ten minutes of backstory - this would have been a much better film!

It’s a film that you either love it - or wish you didn’t waste the last 90 or so minutes on. Also the backing track only got good in the last 20 minutes, but thankfully the action scenes made up for that. It’s definitely not a film to go see in the cinema, but is probably still just above a TV film. Worth a watch even just for Kevin James and Lulu Wilson’s acting performances. Here’s a bit of movie trivia for you, Simon Pegg was announced to play the role of Jeff back in 2019. But due to scheduling conflicts, the part was later recast to Kevin James. Just imagine how different this film would have been otherwise!

Overall: 7/10

Created By: Shoji Gatoh

Directed By: Shin Itagaki

Studio: Millepensee

Episode Count: 1 - 12

Audio: English, Japanese

Subtitles: English

Classification: 15 (BBFC)

Format: Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital, FunimationNow

Licensed By: Manga Entertainment UK, Funimation

It’s been 15 years since a mysterious hyperspace gate opened above the Pacific Ocean, today there are over 2 Million individuals from fairies to elves known as Semanians now residing amongst the human population in the city of San-Teresa. As the two cultures mix and learn to coincide, there are also those that plan to gain power in the city’s seedy underbelly. The San-Teresa Metropolitan Police Department was established to keep the city in order and end the corruption. During a failed drug bust, a Detective is murdered and his police partner Detective Matoba is forced to partner up with a Semanian knight in order to recover a stolen fairy. From here, both the Knight of Mirvor - Tilarna Exedilica and Detective Matoba begin working together to not only recover the kidnapped fairy but also manage to uncover a more sinister operation that stretches much further than they expected. All the while, Tilarna must quickly learn to adjust to Earth's customs and Matoba begins to rethink his stance on these ‘aliens’ that call San-Teresa home.

"copcraft_cs1"

This show takes the best bits from an 80’s cop show, including the killer soundtrack and turns it into a reverse isekai anime. For me this anime was a breath of fresh air and stands out as one of those shows that would make a great recommendation for those skeptical of giving the anime genre a go. I could easily turn around and recommend this show to any guy I know, speculating that at least 70% of them would enjoy some aspects of it. This anime reminds me so much of the cop shows my Dad used to watch, with a cool and very suave protagonist as a cop that dons the shades in nearly every scene & always manages to find the killer in the end. Much like Detective Caine in CSI Miami, but with a much more rough and hot tempered attitude like Riggs in the classic Lethal Weapon film franchise. Throw in some fairy tale creatures and some magic - and that is Cop Craft. Now doesn’t that sound intriguing?!

"copcraft_cs2"

First up we have the Riggs of this anime world - Detective Sergeant Kei Matoba. Having witnessed the death of his police partner before his very eyes, he feels a great deal of guilt following his murder and the subsequent loss to his family. Kei also has a very negative opinion on the ‘aliens’ and sees them mostly as corrupt. As fate would have it, he is soon partnered with a noble knight and Semanian representative in the very youthful looking Tilarna Exedilica. A skilled swordswoman that looks like a young teenager, who journeys through the gate in order to rescue the captured Fairy and punish those responsible. Now teamed up with the San-Teresa Police Department, Tilarna wastes no time in using her skills to get a start on the case. Although she appears like a young girl and her attitude reflects that at times, she is also a highly skilled magic user that has earned the title of Knight for a reason. These two lead characters, although have several hilarious moments together as they begin to grow accustomed to not only each other's unique attitudes but also their customs. They both have some serious character developments throughout the show, with numerous murders happening around them and even some undercover work that puts their lives & pride on the line.

"copcraft_cs3"

So we have the classic cop drama with drug busts, prostitution rings and gangs smuggling in weapons. Throw in some magic, a cop wanting revenge, great storylines and a young girl determined beyond all else to rescue her fairy friend. There are also some interesting villains involved, as not only is there corruption in San-Teresa, but those involved also come from beyond the gate from Tilarna’s world. It’s a gripping show that will hold your attention throughout, I was amazed to see just how much they were able to cram into just 12 episodes. It ended in such a way that I would love to see a second season just to see how the characters progressed over time, but it ultimately had a very satisfying conclusion in the last episode.

"copcraft_cs4"

Cop Craft originally debuted as a light novel series under the name Koppukurafuto Dragnet Mirage Reloaded, back in 2009 by Shoji Gatoh. That name should sound familiar to some, as he also created the Full Metal Panic! & Amagi Brilliant Park franchises. The Cop Craft light novel series currently has 6 volumes available, but unfortunately was never translated and released in English. If you can in fact read Japanese, then the series is currently being published by Shogakukan. This anime series was only released last year in 2019, a full decade since the light novels debuted. This 12 episode anime adaptation was produced by Milliepensee studios. It’s still a fairly new studio, as it was only founded back in 2013. Remarkably though they have produced the 2016 Berserk anime, which followed the Golden Age Arc. I’m looking forward to seeing what they will be releasing next from this studio, as the production alone for Cop Squad was great visually, as was the music choice.

Now Cop Craft is yours to buy now on both BluRay and DVD from Manga Entertainment UK. The BluRay release will also include a code to redeem a Digital Copy over on the FunimationNow app. Where you can also watch this series in full now, if you prefer streaming. It’s certainly well worth adding to your collection, as it is very easy to recommend to people that enjoy action packed cop shows.

Overall: 9/10

Directed By: Jared Cohn

Starring: William Shatner, Lea Hutton Beasmore, Jason Brooks

Running Time: 1hr 38mins

Format: DVD

Genre: Action/Adventure/Horror

Licensed By: 4Digital Media

Release Date: 14th September 2020

For generations, one family has been trying to locate a mysterious relic that has been said to have cursed this family. Now down on his luck and using every bit of time he has, John risks everything on one last expedition. Down in the secluded caves of Kentucky, John witnesses demonic visions, a brutal murder and a glimpse of the cursed relic. Forced by the power of these nightmarish visions and his father’s obsession, John travels down into the caves once more - with his family in tow!

‘The Tomb: Devils Revenge’ carries with it the tagline of ‘Welcome To Hell’. None of which sounded very original and left me with no surprise that this was a direct to DVD release, as it would stand zero chance of doing well in the cinema. The only interest I had in this title was the fact it starred three established Star Trek actors, in William Shatner (Star Trek: The Original Series), Jeri Ryan (Star Trek Voyager, Picard) and Jason Brooks who appeared in the 2009 Star Trek film. The first two actors gave a stellar performance, with Shatner acting as the aged father who was unsuccessful in his time searching for the cursed relic. He gave a grand portrayal of a father that was harsh and disappointed in his only son, but who also seemed to be battling against his own mental health as he seemed to be displaying moments of alzheimers. Jeri’s performance of Johns’ wife was also noteworthy and realistic in behavior. Unfortunately I couldn’t say that for Jason’ portrayal of the lead character John. Perhaps it could have just been the script, but there were moments where I thought he could have performed better in certain scenes as it made it all the more unbelievable.

"tombdevilsrevenge1"

The entire plot to this film had potential, however after the first half hour it went downhill fast! The monster designs were original and impressive to begin with, the chase scene near the end of the film as John is trying to exit the cave - simply had just one bad guy chasing after him, neither of them were very fast. To me it lacked in terror, compared to the earlier scenes of people being murdered. At the end of the day, if just a handful of scenes were just reshot and a new editor was brought on board - this film would be worth not only adding to your collection but also would be easily recommended to friends. Whereas at the moment, it left me with more questions than answers.

""

If you enjoy your B-Movies and are indeed a devoted fan of William Shatner - then by all means pick up this film. ‘The Tomb: Devils Revenge’, will be available to both buy digitally and on DVD from the 14th September, from 4Digital Media Ltd.

Overall: 5/10
Created By: Chiho Saito, Be-Papas

Directed By: Kunihiko Ikuhara

Studio: J.C. She was saved and lifted from the depths of her despair by a travelling Prince sitting upon a white horse. His words brought her a new strength, one that she has carried with her all her life up until this moment. Now that little girl called Utena aspires to be just like her Prince and vows to help those in need. Our spirited young Utena now attends a prestigious academy for the children of wealthy families. Within these grounds she finds herself in the centre of a secret battle for the Rose Bride and the opportunity to Revolutionize the World - but what does it all mean?

"girlutena1"

Revolutionary Girl Utena first debuted back in 1996 as a Shójo manga and through its widespread success, it is still regarded by critics as a highly influential work in the genre. This is all happening at the same time that both Cardcaptor Sakura and Vampire Game also first began serialization in Japanese manga magazines, and while Sailor Moon was beginning to end it’s run. Prior to watching this show, I had never seen Revolutionary Girl Utena before, so I went into it for the first time 24 years after its initial release into the World. To me, this seemed to have been aimed as a more ‘artsy film’ with multiple layers of hidden themes and social issues it wanted to address - such as gender inequality and the idea to invoke a sense of grand purpose into its viewers to go out there and make a positive change in the World. It certainly wasn’t the series I was expecting to watch, but it did create a number of complex characters, as well as some strong female roles - with Anthy Himemiya being just a damsel in distress.

"girlutena2"

So this series follows just a single high school year for Utena, a strong and athletic student who prefers breaking the accepted gender stereotypes simply by her attitude to life, her attire and ability to excel at most sports. Even without having picked up a sword before, she bests even the most skilled fencing and kendo students in her school. With her strong will and determined outlook on life, even without knowing the full facts regarding these secretive battles for the Rose Bride - Utena risks everything to free this unusually obedient girl named Anthy.

Even after watching the entire show and follow up film, I am still almost left none the wiser as to what the entire point was of winning the Rose Bride and gaining the ability to ‘Revolutionize the World’. We see no glimpse of the World really outside the school, just the many mysteries within and the idea that Anthy is perhaps a witch. This school exists almost like it lives in its own dimension, it isn’t until you watch the film does it become more apparent. It is certainly not a show I would recommend to many people, as there is just so much hidden context involved - it simply leaves more questions than any coherent answers.

Character-wise, we do get a number of interesting individuals. Anthy however is entirely different when it comes to the anime series and the film, as she has a severe personality transplant between both. This also applies to some conflicting plot elements when it comes to comparing the series with the film, as well as the added element of human to machine transformation when it comes to the films finale. Was it needed? Definitely not, but of course its for ‘artistic interpretation’ as to the underlying conclusion to the film and the fate of Utena and Anthy.

Regarding characters, we have an interesting bunch including the tom-boy Utena, the helpless damsel in distress is Anthy, we also have a pair of twins, some twisted siblings, arrogant student council members and an unrequited love in what could have been a yuri relationship. It had the set up for an interesting anime, but I don’t think it stands well in today's standards. I found it much more confusing than what it probably was meant to be.

"girlutena3"

It’s not really about a great love story, sure Utena wishes to meet her Prince once again. Perhaps more to say thank you for giving her a reason to live after the sudden deaths of both her parents. Overall we have a good number of dueling fights, which was basically one each episode. So if you enjoy fencing, well you’ll at least appreciate this anime some bit. In the series they use the same animation over and over when it comes to Utena entering the arena and the beginning of each duel. There is quite a bit of repeated footage throughout the show and it does get a bit stale after a number of episodes as opponents tend to repeat themselves again. For a show that came out in 1997, it is probably the best known for being the leading shójo of that decade. For me though, that title will always belong to Cardcaptor Sakura.

"girlutena4"

Both this 39 episode anime and the film were both produced by J.C. Staff, the same studio that also brought us Azumanga Daioh, Familiar of Zero, Toradora and Maid Sama! ‘Utena’ also shared the same director throughout the franchise with Kunihiko Ikuhara, who is mostly known as directly perhaps the majority of the Sailor Moon anime franchise. Following a dispute with Toei Animation over what little creative control he had on directing Sailor Moon, Ikuhara left the studio and with a number of established animators, creators and producers they set up their own creative group called Be-Papas. The group’s only work included this Revolutionary Girl Utena series and the film. For the time it came out, the animation was quite good, very nice to look at and some good character designs. It also isn’t very often that we see anime characters of different skin colour featuring as well. So that was a welcome surprise. The repeated scenes however were a big let down. The music accompaniment however was the saving factor in those scenes.

"girlutena5"

Bonus Features Include:

Now if you liked everything you saw in this review of September’s box, rest assured that the items are different every month. Each box has 6 to 8 items included and a few of them will be revealed online through SoKawaiis’ social media as the weeks go by. October’s box theme is “Halloween Masquerade”, which will feature goods fromStudio Ghibli, Sanrio and Magical Doremi, with a few of the products included already announced across their social media.
