Not only has this pair of talented individuals created a really memorable graphic novel, but they have also designed a D&D one shot that is set in the same universe as Rikt. Which all you DM’s can download now for free in the link below.

Website (plus D&D game): https://www.realmofgoblin.com/

This story has certainly taught us one thing and that is you truely, can never judge a book by its cover - as Rikt stands against the many stereotypes that we have all come to learn about Goblins overtime.

‘Beastial New Year’

Hello all, look what finally turned up in the post! My Nihon Box from January this year, it was such a long wait for this one as it was shipped just before Japan Post resumed their normal service. So let’s begin with the usual spiel of what this service offers!

Much like SoKawaii, Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to for what I find a very affordable price each month.

Like SoKawaii, the more months you pay upfront the cheaper the price for individual boxes will be. https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

3 Months is a single payment of €86.97, making each box €28.99, plus shipping costs.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxjan2021_1"

January’s box theme was ‘Beastial New Year’, which also marks the year of the Ox according to the zodiac calendar. The theme ties in with the Netflix show ‘Beastars’, which became a fan favorite when Season One was first released back in 2019. To which we received two items of merchandise from the show, including a Foaming Soap Dispenser - which is pictured above on the left. This pump bottle features the main wolf Legoshi, with the shows logo. Great to have when you buy the refillable bags of liquid soap. We also received a Legoshi plush as well, which is a nice addition to the box. As you don’t see many Beastars merch here in the west.

"nihonboxjan2021_2"

Moving on, we received a Demon Slayer mini figure from the Hikkake collection. Hikkake translates to Hooked, which is exactly what this figure series represents. Each character hooks onto a box underneath, with three characters available including Tanjiro, Nezuko and Zenitsu. This is just series one of these figures, you can buy the rest of them and more from Dekai Anime at the moment through this link: https://tinyurl.com/zjjz2mx6

"nihonboxjan2021_3"

"nihonboxjan2021_4"

Next up is this tiny little glass hanging mascot, featuring a Tanuki and Kitsune. This very well detailed figure pictured above is from the PUTITTO Tanuki to Kitsune collection. With five different figures to collect, they are from a very popular Japanese online manga series that tells the story of these two mischievous creatures from Japanese folklore. Its very cute and is certainly a series I would be interested in getting into. Although the figure is far from practical, it would be cute to have on your glass shelf or on any display glassware you might have.

"nihonboxjan2021_5"

Now in this box there was a note saying that when my box was being prepared to ship my food item - the Monaka chestnut and mochi, went out of date. So they kindly replaced the item with the above two, which on the left I am unsure as to what exactly it was. I was guessing some kind of mochi maybe? While on the right was the brown sugar soybean sticks that I really enjoyed from a previous box. Unfortunately neither of which I can eat, as both items went out of date a month or so before arriving in the post. Which was very disappointing, but I appreciate the thought.

"nihonboxjan2021_6"

Following on from our food items, we received a miso soup bowl featuring an image of Mount Fuji. This item has been entirely made in Japan, with a black background finish on the outside of the bowl, with images of sakura, clouds and the iconic Fuji-san. The only issue I have with it, is that it appears to be made of hard plastic. Which gives it a bit of a cheap feel to it. An interesting fact though is that Mt. Fuji is one of the symbols that represent a New Year in Japan. It is said that if you dream of the Mountain on the first sleep of the year, it will bring you good luck!

"nihonboxjan2021_7"

Another authentic item made exclusively in Japan, is the above Tako - Flying Kite. This is another New Years tradition in Japan, where you fly a kite with a traditional design on it. It can also be used as decoration, but I hope to be able to fly it one day. Perhaps pack it in my luggage and bring it with me on my eventual trip to Tokyo. Its very small, about the size of an A5 page. Little to no weight to it and was available in a number of different designs. The one I received featured a number of Gods in a boat, which is the image of the 7 Lucky Gods on a Treasure ship. Also known as the Takarabune. It’s interesting looking up the image of the kite you receive in your box, so you can discover the history of kites design.

"nihonboxjan2021_8"

The last item we all received in January’s box is a Pikachu Bento box. We now have a matching set, as we received a pair of Pokémon chopsticks and a case in last November’s box. This super adorable bento box, features the iconic yellow mascot's face on the front of the box.

"nihonboxjan2021_9"

Now if you are a regular subscriber, you will also receive a bonus item every few months. This is a very welcome surprise every time it happens and I have had my eye on this collection ever since it came out. The bonus item I received is a canvas tote bag from the Cardcaptor Sakura and Little Twin Stars collaboration that was released in August 2018. This bag features the iconic Cardcaptor Sakura in her new outfit from the Clear Card series and Kero. Both are drawn in the same design as Little Twin Stars siblings, Kiki & Lala. This bag even folds up into the inner pocket, into a very easily transportable size.

"nihonboxjan2021_10"

And that is a recap of January’s box, just five months late is all. Now I am still missing February's box, so expect another recap review in the coming weeks as well as new reviews for all upcoming Nihon and SoKawaii boxes as they arrive. This box had a good array of goods, for both anime and food fans. As we get a plush, a figure, some traditional and iconic items as well. Such a good box and well worth buying if you can.

For more information on how you can order your own box, look to the top of this review and head over to the link below so you can sign up today!

https://www.nihonbox.com/en

‘One Cut of the Dead’ is back once again, with a sequel that takes place just six months after the films ‘live recording’. The Higurashi family return with Mao, their over enthusiastic daughter stepping up to the directors chair when her father takes an unexpected trip in a removal van as he takes a night's rest in some unusual bedding. They gather up the original cast and crew, with the addition of some foreign talent, as they set their sights on filming their new production in Hollywood.

With the starlet Chinatsu returning in the leading role, who travels to America, changes her hair, starts working in a restaurant and goes by the name Holly. All the while escaping her past and the horrors she witnessed in the first film.

Now I have to say, I absolutely loved the format of the first film and was thrilled to see a sequel. Seeing as we already had a fairly good introduction to the cast in the first film, you really do need to watch that before diving into the Hollywood edition. In which its their daughter Mao, who takes the reins when things really go to shit just hours before they go live on the air. Not only does she deal with the stress, chaos and even a massive incident with the leading star all on the fly - she also deals with working through a fairly big issue with her foriegn boyfriend, who also ends up playing one of the leads on ‘her’ film.

"onecutofthedead_he1"

So with the returning cast of various characters, we still have a good entertaining mix of personalities for this sequel. Within the film they also still have the very awkward task of working with starlet Chinatsu, who seems to love making the film's crew work around her ‘demands’. Some of which require quite a change in the script, much to Mao’s anger. Then we have Mao becoming both the saviour and real star of this film, as her father the director disappears. This girl manages to overcome all the obstacles that a live shooting brings, as well as dealing with a heartbreaking situation with her other half. Then we have the two ‘foreign’ talents in the film, who definitely add to the overall enjoyment of the film.

So as an overall look back on the film, I have to say the first twenty minutes was hard to watch. It was so incredibly cheesy and with terrible acting, that it felt as though it was trying to make fun of itself. However those twenty minutes was the entirety of the film they were shooting live, so we saw their ‘finished product’ first before we actually got to the plot. So the film within the film, was pretty bad, but the film as a whole - t’was decent. I wouldn’t be rushing to go back and rewatch it anytime soon. As it hasn’t surpassed the original, but at the same time it was good to just see it again and see how the characters had progressed. As Mao’s character development was practically the whole point of this film, also it was so good seeing how they shot the film ‘live’ and how it all works from behind the scenes again. It certainly was a passion project. Even though this is a ‘zombie’ film, it was ‘John’s character acting that kind of eclipsed it all. I mean, the moment he was stalling in the scene outside with the zombies - he just went pure Scarface.

So this release is actually a combination of the first film and the Hollywood edition, with a bunch of bonus material. If you haven’t bought the first film already, then I would highly suggest this version. You also need to act quick, as it is limited to just 2000 copies. Based on the fact that this includes the original film, my score is going to be higher than what it would be based on just this sequel. You can also check out the full review of the first film, “One Cut of the Dead” in the link here - http://comicbuzz.com/one-cut-of-the-dead-review/

“Full Bloom Sakura”

Hello everyone, I’m back with another SoKawaii box review! Although a little later than usual, seeing as Japan Post is back up and running international postage again - shipping now takes a couple of weeks compared to 5 days tops from DHL during the pandemic. Don’t worry though, I still see myself doing the subscription box reviews for quite some time yet. So let’s get on to April’s box and its “Full Bloom Sakura” theme, which was celebrating Cherry Blossom season. So everything in this box more or less followed the same color palette. This month’s items are mostly from Sanrio, with one Pokémon item included.

For those of you that don’t know - SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 5 to 7 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep each month. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media accounts. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts, particularly their Instagram one – https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

"sokawaiiapril2021_1"

Our first item this month is a rather large one for the size of the box, and it’s this Sakura Cinnamoroll plush from Sanrio. This mochi plush is perfect for those day time naps that we all dream about post lunch. It’s pillow-like design features the iconic white character, with a light pink blush across its cheeks, sakura petals printed on its floppy ears and a sakura flower adorned on its head. It’s very well detailed and is also an exclusive item, as this plush is a limited run 2021 design from Sanrio. Better yet we have four items from this Sakura Sanrio collection in this very box.

"sokawaiiapril2021_2"

The next item is also from the same collection and is a mini memo pad. Following the same character design as the Cinnamoroll plush, each page is ruled and has the same image on the front of the memo pad on the top of each page. This item is available in 8 different Sanrio character designs, of which I received Cinnamoroll.

"sokawaiiapril2021_3"

Our third item from the Sakura collection is this Character pen, pictured on the left in the picture above. Now it is always handy to have an extra pen in the house and on you at all times, especially one as cute as this. This pen has a decent grip and weight to it, so it will be good for all that general paperwork you have to do. This item was available in three designs, all of which had Sanrio characters in the same traditional clothing designs as the memo pad.

Our next item is the Hello Kitty - Flower Body Spray, pictured on the right in the photo above. It’s in a handy travel size bottle, so you can put it in your handbag if you're on the go. It follows the same Sakura theme and has a cute packaging design. I am actually amazed it never leaked or broke during shipping. The scent might be a bit too strong for some, as I find just one spritz goes a long way. Can be used by adults, but would also make a nice gift for younger girls that are a bit too young for perfume yet.

"sokawaiiapril2021_4"

Now a pair of fluffy socks is always a welcome sight in any box, especially if they are character themed. This pair is once again from Sanrio, and is available in three character designs including My Melody, Hello Kitty and Pompompurin, but with four designs available. So it will be a real pick and mix in regards to what designs everyone will get. It’s made from stretchy material, super fluffy and for me, they fit a UK size 4 comfortably. They are more fluffy ankle socks, will stretch to a UK size 5 to 7 but don’t think there will be anymore room after that.

"sokawaiiapril2021_5"

We are now onto our sixth and final Sanrio item from this month’s box - in this gorgeous Sakura Tote bag! This dual handled tote bag comes with two zippers on top with a rather sizable pocket on the inside. Would be ideal perhaps as a handbag, would easily carry a lunch or maybe even for a beach trip. This adorable bag is covered all around by a floral print, with several Sanrio characters printed across it including Keroppi, Little Twin Stars and Pompompurin. This bag was guaranteed in every April box.

"sokawaiiapril2021_6"

We are now onto our final item for this April's box and it comes from Pokémon, with Volume 5 of their Pokemofu mini doll series. This item is very similar to the Sylvanian Families, where we have a small figure that is covered in a light fur, giving it a fuzzy appearance. This series has been running since 2018 and is being made by Bandai, each figure also comes with a small piece of gum - which allows them to be sold in convenience stores near the sweets. There are seven available in Volume 5, including Pikachu, Grookey, Scorbunny, Sobble, Sandshrew, Alolan Sandshrew and Bewear.

"sokawaiiapril2021_7"

There we have it folks, that was Aprils’ SoKawaii box. Very Sanrio heavy in the merch, a number of limited collectables, very on theme with the Cheery Blossom season. Now let’s get on to the all important information, for how YOU can begin your own subscription, as well as a special discount code just for you guys.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. SoKawaii are back to shipping their boxes via Japan Post, so delivery may take a number of weeks. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 Month – $35.00 (€29.00mo roughly)

3 Months – $33.50 (€28.00mo roughly)

6 Months – $32.00 (€26.50mo roughly)

12 Months – $31.50 (€26.00mo roughly)Better yet, here is a $3 discount code that you can use on your first box by clicking this link!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you enjoyed April's box, then just wait for May’s! It’s theme is “Springtime, Happy Time!” Featuring a number of items from San-X, My Neighbour Totoro and Sanrio. This box is already sold out, but act quick if you want June’s box where you can get your very own Totoro plush! Stay tuned to SoKawaiis’ social media, as they announced their themes, sneak peaks and opinion polls on what fans want to see next in their boxes. They are very active on their Instagram and really listen to what their customers are looking for - so go have your say now! Also make sure and use that special discount code I left you all above!

https://www.sokawaii.com/
Written By: Yvon Roy

Illustrated By: Yvon Roy

Published By: Titan Comics

Release Date: May 25th 2021

Nobody ever expects parenthood to go smoothly, but it is still one of the most rewarding moments in a person's life when they are given the opportunity to become a Mom or Dad. For author Yvon Roy, he decided to tell his family’s story through his art. This is the story of how a parent learns to navigate and learn to adapt to their son’s autism diagnosis, whilst supporting them the entire way.

In order not to tiptoe around the word ‘autism’ and hopefully not make any uneducated remarks, I decided to do a quick read into the condition. For those that would also like to know more before reading this article and purchasing the book - which after this review I highly suggest doing so!

The definition of Autism includes the following: “Autism affects information processing in the brain and how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize; how this occurs is not well understood.”

"littlevictories1"

This often results in problems maintaining eye contact, emotional and communication challenges. Most of this information I learned from reading this book, as we follow not only young Oliver’s journey of living with Autism, but also how his parents re-evaluate their mindset for how their son will get by in life.

“Little Victories: Autism Through a Father’s Eyes” was written and illustrated by Canadian born author Yvon Roy. Making this book an autobiographical graphic novel, depicting the first few years of his sons’ life. From meeting his partner Chloe, having their first child - Oliver. But over time discovering that he isn't hitting those all important milestones and thus taking that next step to go to an evaluation clinic in order to better understand their son. It’s at this moment, that the parents are hit with a harsh reality check. That perfect world and life they had built for their son in their heads - comes crashing down around them. Now they must learn the skills and knowledge in order to build once more from the ground up - with Olivers needs being their main focus.

With the strain and pressure of dealing with learning more about Autism and ‘working with’ those that ‘obviously’ know far more about your son than you ever could. Tension grew high, tempers grew short, something was going to give - resulting in the perfect couple going two different ways. Their focus though - always remaining on Oliver!

"littlevictories2"

This book has been an incredible eye opener - not only into understanding more about Autism. But also the struggles involved with gaining support, help, understanding and then the pressure, strain and breakdowns that the parents ultimately go through. It began as such a sad read, but by the end all I want to do is buy the book and give it to anyone I may know that may be going through similar scenarios. Just so they know - that they ain't alone in their journey. It truly is a wonderful book, and is no surprise that it has received so many awards including:

This book tells the story of Rikt, a young headstrong Goblin who is on a quest for revenge against the blood-thirsty human that struck down his family. Now alone in the World, he travels far in search of a weapon that can bring down the wicked human. He encounters many individuals along the way that both shape his character and reveal the true nature of Goblins to all those he meets. His quest is a perilous one, full of danger and heartache. However, through this journey, Rikt begins to understand his fathers teachings and how to rely on his Goblin instincts.

Goblins - are a sub humanoid race in Dungeons & Dragons. Where they are described as being “small, black-hearted, selfish humanoids that lair in caves, abandoned mines, despoiled dungeons, and other dismal settings. Individually weak, goblins gather in large — sometimes overwhelming — numbers. They crave power and regularly abuse whatever authority they obtain.” If you are a follower of Critical Role, you would know that one of the main members of the Mighty Nein is Nott the Brave - a goblin. Who has similar characteristics to our Rikt, in that neither of them really resemble much of what we have learned about the goblin race to date. In this story, Rikt lives with his parents. Supposedly secluded away from other Goblins. They also have a unique religion, similar to that of the Wild Mother in D&D. Rikt’s father tries to teach his son that he should not believe the evil things that others expect to be true of Goblins. That they are in fact a peaceful race, close to nature and do not wish to be harmed/disturbed. In just the first few pages, this book has already dispelled the majority of the opinions I already held against Goblins. So now it has my full attention.

"goblin1"

Rikt appears to be a youngish teenager, rash, full of opinions and always up for a fight against his parents. Through some devastating events he finds himself all alone, tasked with the job of laying his folks to rest before setting off on his path for revenge. So very early on he is taken advantage of by ‘fairies’, he learns some life lessons and happens to still show some kindness along the way to those in need. Over such a short space of time, he matures and learns the consequences of his actions. The ending is a true test of character and strength for Rikt - one I didn't believe he would be capable of from the beginning of the book.

So this book tells the story of Rikt, an underdog in every meaning of the word. Who in turn achieves great things after suffering many trials and hardships along the way. His tale is one full of tragedy, but he still manages to have plenty of adventure and touching moments. The ‘villain’ of the story was a blood thirsty, tattooed human who also sought his own revenge. Although our villain took a more evil route to achieve his goal, it ultimately left him alone in a castle full of bones. His story struck Rikt, ultimately changing his life’s path for good.

"goblin2"

“Goblin” was created by author Eric Grissom, whose comic works include Deadhorse, Tom & Violence, Animals, and the space adventure comic - Planet Gigantic. Of which you can check out his social media links here through Twitter: @egrissom and over on Instagram: @egrissom. As well as his works over on ComiXology: https://www.comixology.eu/Eric-Grissom/comics-creator/8446.

Then we have Will Perkins, the illustrator for “Goblin”, who is also an amateur paleontologist - which is a pretty neat hobby actually. His works have included Gregory Suicide, Beware…, Fubar American History Z, Sealand Forever and Planet Gigantic. All of which you can find over on his official website: https://www.willperkinscomics.com/

“Dark Birthday”

Hello everyone, look what just turned up on my doorstep!

My missing Nihon Box from February finally arrived, just days after my January box decided to make an appearance. Looks like I’m finally caught up now on all my MIA boxes, so reviews should be in perfect order from now on. Anyway, Februarys’ box was a pretty important one as it was celebrating Nihon Boxes 6th anniversary! And what a milestone it is, as they have not only survived a fairly niche market but also a worldwide pandemic! Super proud of them and it makes it even more special being a customer.

So let’s get onto the usual tidbits about this service. Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_1"

Onto our first item this month, we have a very pretty looking origami set from the Studio Ghibli movie ‘Spirited Away’. This product is not only made in Japan, but the art of paper folding just screams Japanese culture. The first recorded mention of the artform comes from a reference to a paper model in a short poem by Ihara Saikaku in 1680. This particular set includes traditional origami paper and sets where you can construct various characters from the movie. Great for display purposes and even comes so well packaged, that it would also make a lovely gift.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_2"

Our second item is for all you snack lovers, as February's box included a rather large bag of Fugashi. The packaging for this one reminds me of a cow-print, so its rather confusing in its advertising. It’s actually a rather old snack that dates back about 150 years. It’s a wheat flour based bar that is just covered in brown sugar. Just plain and simple really, there seems to be a number of Japanese snacks like this. Either Way, seeing as the shipping took so long, this item was about a month out of date by the time I got it. So perhaps it will be included again in a future box.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_3"

Our third item is one I don’t really don’t know what to do with yet. As it’s this beautiful blue sakura patterned plate. Its quite unique, as I don’t know if you can really tell from the picture, but it has an almost water droplet effect on the plate. As though the raindrops had frozen in the moment, to create this unique texture and pattern on the surface. It’s one I never plan on using, as it has to be for decorative purposes in my eyes. This item is also made in Japan, and includes a signature on the back of the plate, so you know it was handcrafted. I just wished the pamphlet included some information on who created this piece.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_4"

We are now back to the anime merch, as we have a familiar bull dog clip plush and a figure. The plush clip is from the latest fan favorite show from Shonen Jump - Jujutsu Kaisen. We have gotten similar bull clips in the past from both SoKawaii and Nihon Box, when they included the Demon Slayer range. These are strong clips, unique in that its also a miniature plush but is also kind of awkward when you try to figure out how best to either use it or display the item. This particular one was available in six designs, of which I seem to have pulled the main character Yuji Itadori. On the right is our largest item in the box, and that is a Noodle Stopper figure of Hiei from Yú Yú Hakusho. Now these figures are usually in more relaxed poses, mostly with characters sitting down as they are created in such a way that they balance on top of your ‘pot noodle’ or ‘cup ramen’ as its ‘cooking’ away. Its a fairly well detailed figure, unfortunately I don’t really know much about the show other than it came out in the early 90’s and is almost as old as myself. Always nice getting figures in a box, although this one might be a bit too niche going by how old the show is.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_5"

We are now onto our final item of the month, which brings us back to a far more recent anime hit - Demon Slayer. This time we got a decorative lamp that had several characters labeled around the side, including Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu and Inosuke. With the off/on switch positioned underneath the lamp, you will also need 3 AA batteries to power it. It gives off a fairly decent amount of light, and also projects the Kimetsu no Yaiba logo from the top onto your ceiling. The bulb also changes color slightly from time to time, so its still a rather decent lamp. More for display purposes than practicality though I say.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_6"

There was one last piece in this box, and it was a special note from the folks over at Nihon Box. A lovely printed, decorative card with some touching words on how they have survived this long to make it to their sixth year in business. It’s really worth reading, so please take a moment to. They have also mentioned that they have several surprises coming out this year, and most certainly one of those is their new venture - Yatta Japan (https://www.yattajapan.com/en) Where you can buy many of the items that were included in previous boxes, as well as new figures, snacks, manga and more. All on the one website. Worth checking out, as they also have their own rewards scheme for every time you buy from them.

So there we have it folks, that was another Nihon Box - although it was fairly late in arriving. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from classic shows such as Spirited Away and Yú Yú Hakusho, to the newer franchises including Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime fans and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Dark Birthday”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about Setsubun - the demon hunting day and why it is celebrated in Japan. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

For more information on how you can order your own box, look to the top of this review and head over to the link below so you can sign up today!

‘Back To School’

Welcome back folks, to another Nihon Box unboxing!

This time we are taking a look back on what was available in April’s box, as even with Japan Post resuming normal service the mail is still coming in rather slow, with each box taking several weeks to get here. April’s theme focused on going ‘Back To School’, so we have a rather interesting mix of items that are kind of associated with that. So let’s get started.

Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door.

"nihonboxapril2021_1"

Now on to our first two items, both of which are from the GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka franchise. A manga series that first debuted back in the late 90’s and has had a number of adaptations over the years, including both anime and live action dramas. The series follows a young man named Onizuka who decides to become a teacher in order to attract women. He soon discovers he has a conscience and instead devotes himself to becoming the best teacher, thus using whatever means necessary to break through and help each one of his students that others have given up on. It genuinely sounds like a good show, much like Assassination Classroom - just minus the indestructible creature for a teacher. So in this box, we were lucky to receive a nice sized shopping bag and a set of four corkboard coasters. Each with various illustrations from the show. I would imagine that this series doesn’t have much merch nowadays, seeing as the last adaptation was back in 2014.

"nihonboxapril2021_2"

We also got a small stationary item in this month's box, with a Doraemon Sakura themed pen. Doraemon is perhaps one of the most iconic anime characters in Japan, perhaps more so than Pikachu. This blue alien cat has been a part of generations of people's childhoods since the 1970’s. Its initial manga ran for 26 years! The anime series is still ongoing even today. So its quite nice to be able to get an item that represents a show with that much history attached to it. I mean this box is supposed to be focussed on Back to School, yet this pen will be the only piece of stationary included.

"nihonboxapril2021_3"

Moving on, we have both a Japanese snack item and a good luck cat. Our snack for April’s box was the Karintó Matcha Milk Flavor pastry. They are a traditional Japanese snack food. Sweet and deep-fried, it is made primarily of flour, yeast, and brown sugar. With this version having a matcha milk taste to it. I was hoping to try this one for myself, but unfortunately it was out of date by the time it got to me. The joys of a slow postal service -.-’

On the right is a miniature black cat figure, known as a Maneki-neko Sakura. Over in Japan, the sakura (cherry blossom) season is associated with the start of a new school year. Many schools in Japan actually resemble what you would see in anime, in fact it is pretty common to see sakura trees planted at the front entrances of schools. This little figure is also meant to attract good luck and wealth, as this one is seen lifting its right paw.

"nihonboxapril2021_4"

We are now on to a rather large item that came in this Aprils’ box, and that is a figure of Yúji Itadori from the popular anime this year - Jujutsu Kaisen. Now I am certain you have seen plenty of posts and merch going around these past six months or so about this anime. Although I have yet to sit down and watch an episode myself, it seems to have created a rather large fanbase. It’s the latest supernatural series that seems to be pulling in a new audience for Weekly Shónen Jump, and is also available to read now over on the Shonen Jump manga app. With almost 150 chapters available to read now for just €1.99 a month. Coming back now to the figure, its rather large and is quite sturdy. All you have to do is sit the figure on the base and that's it. He comes in what I would call a ‘ready to fight’ pose, which I assume is his usual stance in the show. Its fairly well detailed and built, it was also added into this box just days after it was released in Japan. So its a fairly decent exclusive for a subscription box, its just freshly out in stores!

"nihonboxapril2021_5"

We are now onto our final item, one that is sure to cushion-the-blow for fans of these reviews! What school themed box would be complete, if it didn't include Koro Sensei? Many of you must be aware of the yellow, perverted octopus from Assassination Classroom. A fantastic show and manga, if you have never heard of it before. The plot follows a group of students, who have become outcasts in their own school due to either their behaviour or failing grades. An opportunity is presented to them to change their fortune, if they participate in trying to assassinate their new teacher - a terrifying and indestructible mutant by the name of Koro sensei. If they fail, the entire Earth will be destroyed by the time they graduate high school. It’s well worth checking out, either the manga or even the anime. So the merch we got from the show is infact a small pillow of Koro senseis’ head! Small, soft and round, it acts as a nice head cushion or just a simple throw pillow.

"nihonboxapril2021_6"

So there we have it everyone, that was April’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from classic shows such as GTO and Doraemon, to the newer franchises including Assassination Classroom and Jujutsu Kaisen. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. This month’s topic was about School life in Japan and how it is different from perhaps western countries. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

Written By: Eric Grissom

Illustrated By: Will Perkins

Published by: Dark Horse Books

All of which you can find over on his official website: https://www.willperkinscomics.com/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meRztQive30

“Spring Time, Happy Time!”

Hello everyone, I am back once again with another SoKawaii box to review. This time I have May’s box, which focuses on Spring Time. With a number of items dedicated to making your homelife that bit more kawaii, with merch from Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and San-X. So let’s get started with information on who SoKawaii is!

For those of you that don’t know – SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. "sokawaiimay2021_1"

So our first item this month is one I have longed to own - a Kuromi plush! This adorable plush mascot comes in her very own maid outfit, all set for the big Spring Clean. With an outfit that would fit right in with any maid café in Japan, Kuromi has a matching headband and bows as well. This officially licensed mascot comes straight from Sanrio, however she won’t be in every May box as there is also a My Melody version that could also be included. This was obviously the best item from the box this month for me!

"sokawaiimay2021_2"

Moving on to our second Sanrio item, which is a magnetic hook featuring a number of Sanrio’s most iconic characters. There were two designs available for this product, as it is unusual to find a magnetic hook as it leaves very few places to actually use it. Mine ended up being attached to the side of my cooker, so I can hang up my oven glove. It really makes you think, how many places have you in your home that you can actually attach a magne.

"sokawaiimay2021_3"

Next up is our kitchenware items for this month, which include a bowl and chopsticks. The bowl is actually made from bamboo fiber, which makes it more eco friendly than plastic and is also food safe. It even includes a fun looking Sumikkogurashi design on the inside, which will make a lovely little surprise for when you are done eating your food. Now I wouldn’t suggest putting this in a dishwasher, as it could either ruin the design or it mightn’t be suitable for high temperatures. Best keep with the old fashion way and wash it by hand.

Accompanying this bowl is two sets of chopsticks, featuring everyone's favourite My Neighbor Totoro from Studio Ghibli. These 21cm chopsticks (which I don’t really know they came in different sizes), are decorated at the top by the lovable character. Perfect for sharing a meal, or having as a back up.

"sokawaiimay2021_4"

Our final item this month comes once again from San-X with this super soft Rilakkuma pillow. This pillow is in fact more of a cushion, going by the size and shape. It’s quite soft, but not very ‘plump’ as though it could have done with some more stuffing for a more firm cushion. However if it was, it may not have fitted inside the box! This cushion of course has two ‘faces’ to it, with Rilakkumas’ face taking up the entirety of one side with flowers printed on the corners. The opposite side is more sparse, with a beautiful background filled with sakura petals and flowers. With Rilakkuma enjoying a Dango and Korilakkuma sitting beside him in the corner. We also have the little chick Kiiroitori sitting on top of a flower in the top corner. It really does make for a lovely throw pillow, but practicality not so much as there are so many warnings on the label that this cushion can never be machine washed.

All of which you can find over on his official website: https://www.willperkinscomics.com/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meRztQive30

SPOILER WARNING

After the sudden death of their King at the hands of Valadar, the kingdom of Valderia has been thrown into chaos. As Valadar’s forces take over the capitol, reigning chaos and barbaric violence against its citizens. There are few left to fight against them, even the mighty leader of the Battlecats - Kelthan has lost his nerve.

The remaining members of the Battlecats are on a mission to recover the body of their fallen King at the request of Queen Adastril. Who has taken refuge in Vikal Crest with a resistance group. All the while, Valadar is still unsatisfied with the outcome of his battle against King Eramad III and still seeks vengeance. Whilst another power battle is still in play between Myrthalen and her father Natharien.

"Battlecats-1-Vol-3_03"

We are now in the final arc of the Battlecats story, as this third and final volume begins. I’m sad to see this series come to an end, but it has been a great journey thus far. I’m excited to see where exactly this goes for all characters involved before we get to that final panel. This series has had many a character origin story, battle scenes, trials and tragedies. From political battles to fighting for survival in a coliseum - just to prove your loyalty. The world of Valderia is immense, most of which is inhabited by feline humanoids who follow the will of the Lion God and the late King Eramad dynasty. Then there are few who prefer to go back to the dark days of the past, where animal instinct and barbaric personas was all that was important. It only took a single death of a loved one and a single feline warrior seeking revenge - for these two polar opposite worlds to collide. The result of this is what this final arc will be covering - beginning with the aftermath of King Eramads demise and the new rule of Valadar.

Our beloved hero and leader of the Battlecats - Kelthan has taken such a fall from grace that he is still reeling from his King's death. Now stumbling about the streets with a bottle of mead, picking petty fights that he can no longer win in his state of mind. Ultimately offering up his life, just for this nightmarish hell to end. It’s his fellow Battlecats that still fight on, although there are now new tensions in the group. They are still strong, capable and have a stand-in leader, who will hopefully keep them alive long enough to make a difference in this rebellion.

On the other side of this fight, Valadar still struggles with the loss of his partner from many years ago. Her skull both haunts him and brings him some form of solace. However its not enough to mask the pain he wishes to rid, even after taking down the beloved ruler of this land. Even after getting his vengeance and now sitting in the seat of power. Valadar is still lost, and its the sinister Myrthalen who will use that to her full advantage.

"Battlecats-1-Vol-3_04"

With each new issue the artwork and story has been reaching new heights. With a heavy plot the last number of issues, this latest one finds the characters still reeling from recent events. It’s ultimately Kelthan that is going to have to shape up pretty fast and get his head in order if he wants to renew his pledge to his homeland and fallen King. Valderia is in upheaval, its citizens need saving and the Battlecats may need him once again.

Battlecats Vol. 3 #1 is released on July 07, 2021 and can be purchased at www.madcavestudios.com, Comixology, Drive-thru comics or your local comic book shop.

Alexia is the next in line to inherit ‘The Foundation’, an organisation that has regulated Superheroes and Villains into fighting in cage matches for the public's safety & entertainment. Although Alexia only wishes to be just a superhero, whose job is to solely help the weak and vulnerable. Her Father - Iron Head, has other plans for his daughter.

He plans on making her the next Iron Head, with a new look - one far from the physique she was born with. Not long after this ‘conversation’, the great Iron Head suffers a fatal heart attack. It is only on the day of his funeral, does Alexia meet her half sister Amy - Daughter of the late Villianis: Black Hand. Together they go through some family history, uncover The Foundation's secrets and try to avoid being arrested by the Law.

Well now, this was quite an interesting comic. It reminds me a bit of Jupiter's Legacy, which I watched last month over on Netflix. In that it deals with the superheroes as the main characters, the pressure, tough decisions and expectations that are placed upon them. Especially the second generation of heroes that are born with powers, such as Alexia and Amy. Where they are the products of their parents' relationships, and the choices of their shared father IronHead. Who was known and respected as a patriot, a great Man who saved the World with a handful of heroes by his side. The secrets his daughters uncover reveal the truth behind how that was all made possible. You truly have to pick up this collected Volume, if you want to uncover all the juicy secrets for yourself, as even revealing one is just a massive spoiler.

"bhihv1_1"

The newly reunited sisters are two ends to the same coin, although their upbringings and personalities are solely different from one another. They ultimately are drawn to helping the other out of tough situations, even after having a scrap or parting ways. Alexia has a massive conscience and knows exactly what is ‘right from wrong’, whereas Amy is trying her best to just look after herself. All she wants is her Mother’s old car, one that could neutralize her powers whilst inside of it. Truly a one of a kind vehicle that can at least give her a moment of normality. Their common ground soon becomes the task of uncovering the Foundations secrets, as well as trying to stop an all too familiar face from gaining complete control & power. So this story so far has immense Daddy issues, half-siblings showing up, unjust incarceration, some fine lines between justice and law, a corrupt system and a whole other plot that would just spoil the series if I mentioned it now - and that is just the first arc!

‘Blackhand & Ironhead’ has a unique style of artwork, where the character designs remind me a lot of the Batman Animated series just for facial expressions, whereas the background of the city just on the first set of pages reminds me more of Futurama. Its an odd mix but it just struck me more as I was reading it. The character design for Alexia however does bring back memories of when I used to see Squirrel Girl making the odd appearance in the Marvel comics back in the early 2000’s. More of a ‘real woman’ shape to the character, nothing wrong with that! This girl can also throw a punch and stand her ground in a fight - now that I can respect! Anyway, artwork has been top notch, and it’s not only humans that feature in this story as we also have a dimensional villain as well that just resembles an alien looking Indian deity? Kind of hard to describe now that I put it into words. Then we have Amy who has a whole style of her own! Very original, punkish with a cracking attitude! This series was also originally published online on PanelSyndicate.com, with Image Comics now giving it its first print release.

So if you enjoy the likes of ‘Jupiter's Legacy’, then I would highly suggest checking out ‘Blackhand & Ironhead’. Volume 1 is currently available, which contains the entire five issues that made up that section. Which is available to buy directly from the link below. Also make sure to check out your local comic book shop for future issues!

So once again, make sure and wash this one by hand if you need to.

"sokawaiimay2021_5"

There we have it folks, that was Mays’ SoKawaii box. Very Sanrio and San-X heavy in the merch, with a good mix of items.

12 Months – $31.50 (€26.00mo roughly)

Better yet, here is a $3 discount code that you can use on your first box by clicking this link!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you enjoyed May’s box, then just wait for June’s! It’s theme is “Dreamy Creatures”, which will feature a number of items from Sanrio, Kirby, My Neighbour Totoro and Pokémon. That box is already sold out and on the way to me, and will include my very own Totoro plush! Stay tuned to SoKawaiis’ social media, as they announced their themes, sneak peaks and opinion polls on what fans want to see next in their boxes. They are very active on their Instagram and really listen to what their customers are looking for – so go have your say now! Also make sure and use that special discount code I left you all above!

Illustrated By: Will Perkins

Published by: Dark Horse Books

All of which you can find over on his official website: https://www.willperkinscomics.com/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meRztQive30
