13 year old Meg Murry (Storm Reid) has spent the past four years of her life without a dad. Her scientist father, Alex (Chris Pine) disappeared one day without explanation, leaving Meg, her brother and her mum, Kate (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) to lead their lives without him. Bullied and teased by girls at school, Meg tries to keep herself to herself. Unfortunately, her younger brother, Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) is the total opposite and tends to get Meg noticed a lot more than she would like. One day a boy from school named Calvin comes round to visit and then not long after, a mysterious floating woman appears who tells them her name is Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon). Along with her two friends, Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs. What (Oprah Winfrey), they tell her that her dad is in fact alive but is trapped in an alternate dimension. Charles Wallace is totally unfazed by these 3 bizarre characters and tells Meg that they have to go and rescue their dad, whatever the cost. So begins an adventure that will make all 3 children view things in a whole new light and access traits and skills that they never realised they had.
This newest offering from Disney is based on a novel written by American novelist, Madeleine L’Engle and it was published back in 1962. The science fantasy novel won numerous awards, including the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award and was the first in a quintet of books about the Murry family.
As with most Disney movies, you always pretty much know what you’re letting yourself in for when going to see them. A great and varied cast of all different generations, it’s a story of family, being re-united with loved ones, and love conquering all. Yes, it’s a bit of a cliché but that’s what seems to be at the heart of most Disney movies; Stories of love and loss and discovering your true potential.
Definitely a family movie, ‘A Wrinkle In Time’ is one that will be great for a family trip out that everyone can enjoy, whatever their age. Rated PG and running at just under 2 hours it’s harmless enough. The CGI is pretty cool in the movie and I really think kids will immerse themselves in the story. The end felt a tiny bit rushed but don’t let that deter you.
Take the kids/nieces/nephews/grandkids out to a movie that I’d say most people will enjoy. There’s not a lot of thought needed when trying to work out plots etc, it’s simply a really great story. Go see it.
