Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded Review

Developer: XR Games

Platform: PlayStation VR 2

Genre: Shooter

Publisher: XR GAMES

Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded is a new, completely revamped version of the hit VR arcade light gun-style shooter “Zombieland: Headshot Fever”.

The PS VR2 version puts the player direct and centre of the action, with the ability to wield two guns as the player progresses through a level of zombies and other nasties to defeat the bosses. The VR experience compliments the game as the simple mechanics let the player focus on the game and not try to figure out a whole host of controls. Simple and easy to pick up and play.

As it is a movie tie-in, the actors from the game provide voice-overs and tongue-in-cheek comedy, which sets the tone for the game. The cel-shaded graphics also emphasise the fun and wickedly fun gameplay. An old-school retro shooter brought to VR is a great proposition. It reminds me of House of the Dead but not as gruesome and dark. The game is bright and lots of fun. Who does not love killing zombies?

There are two game modes:- shooting practice and the main game, which consists of a series of levels where you battle through a horde of zombies. Training does, as it says. It helps you hone your skills and try out the guns. The more levels and exercise you do, the more perks you unlock.

The levels are more arcade levels which last a couple of minutes each. Each stage has its own goals, perks and challenges to complete. There is a worldwide leaderboard to see how you are fair to others worldwide. The game uses adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, making the shooting more intensive. The headset shakes and rumbles as you encounter zombies. The game supports eye-tracking too. All in all, it’s a great experience. There was no nausea when playing the game, a huge plus, but the menus rendering the odd time would cause some graphical quirks and the screen shaking for a second or two, but nothing game-breaking.

The game was lots of fun, and I had a blast. It’s a no-nonsense arcade shooter brought to life in VR.

Overall: 8.5/10
