Observer: System Redux is a psychological horror thriller set in a futuristic cyberpunk world. You play the role of Daniel Lazarski (Rutger Hauer) an observer detective. You investigate an anonymous call and you follow this journey through this dystopian world.

The first thing is the striking visuals mixed with the mixture of cyberpunk elements, modified humans and a sense of unease of your surroundings. It's a first-person detective game where you have to get to the bottom of a series of strange events. As a neural detective, the key elements involve investigating crime scenes using your additional powers (human mods). There is one critical ability which is the ability to hack the minds of humans. Observer draws on this gameplay mechanic to help further the investigation. It's also used for dramatic effect to provide further tension, suspense and horror to the game.

"observer_r1"

The voice acting is superb, the interactions with NPCs is fantastic, there is an amazing amount of detail. Corridors and hallways are dimly lit, it's a dark world with neon lights that stand out. The artwork, levels and the whole game combines all the aspects superbly. The game is linear but there is a wonderful build-up of the atmosphere, tension and dread throughout. The voice acting and characters you meet make each interaction noteworthy and interesting. It all plays into this fantastic horror game. The tone, music, and effects all add to the air of uncertainty too.

"observer_r2"

I played on the Xbox Series X, this version has updated graphics (textures, models and effects), the graphics look superb and provides a much-needed update for next-gen consoles. PS 5 and Xbox Series X support 4K at 60 fps, this is with no ray tracing.

"observer_r3"

Characters, details, voice acting and cinematics add a superb sense of dread, horror and an uneasy sense to the whole game. This game has a tense and thrilling atmosphere that underpins the whole game. It's eerie, moody and full of dread. The game gets the mix of cinematics and cyberpunk elements right. All the elements work amazingly well together.

I'm familiar with the series and the gameplay though. Space Invaders Forever contains three games Space Invaders Extreme, Arkanoid vs Space Invaders and Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE.

"spaceinvadersforever_1"

Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE is a revisiting classic 1978 version of the game that boasts four-player gameplay too. The game is a loving rendition of the classic game. A little blocky spaceship at the bottom of the screen that has to survive the onslaught of the invaders. The graphics and gameplay are stripped and basic. Sound effects are of the 70's era, it's relatively slow-paced compared to the other two games. As you progress through the game you get to experience the modern version of Space Invaders with enhanced graphics and sounds.

"spaceinvadersforever_2"

Arkanoid vs Space Invaders hits differently as it's Arkanoid in the Space Invaders theme world. The music is loud, brash and full of dance beats. The game is more strategy as opposed to the shooter like the classic game. It has a real modern arcade game feel with the all-important boss levels. It has a real sense of satisfaction as you progress through the levels.

"spaceinvadersforever_3"

Space Invaders Extreme is the updated version of Space Invaders that is my favourite of three games. The game is a mixture of psychedelic madness mixed with a dance soundtrack which is awesome, the gameplay has the classic downward scrolling invaders but in this game, you get an upgrade of powers and bonus levels too. The visuals are euphoric and the gameplay matches it with its frenetic pace. Gameplay-wise, I can't fault, it's just tons of fun, It's a throwback to old school arcade games. This game is also available in multiplayer too.

I was surprised how much the updated versions of the games hit the spot. The games are fun, bright and the soundtracks are fantastic. All three retro games are worth playing. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. It's nice to revisit a game with such great gameplay that's stripped back and super fun.

Overall: 9/10
Developer: NetherRealm Studios

Platforms: PC, PS5 (Reviewed), PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch

Genre: Action, Fighting

Publisher: Warner Bros. It has a superb mixture of realism and amazing combat and there is next-console updates and new additional fighters available.

"MK11U_1"

The visuals (dynamic 4K at 60 fps) and animation of the game stand out before anything else, the character design, voiceover, background and player movement is superb. I usually just button bash my way through fighting games but I did the tutorials to learn the moves. It was worth doing, the few hours put into the tutorials and training modes helped to immersive myself in a character (Liu Kang and Scorpion) and chain combos with a few special moves that I know. Once, I got a handle on a character or two, I decided to play the story mode which surprisingly is quite good and allows you to play as other characters. I don't know the whole back story. In this episode, Raiden (a lightning god) is over with a desire to make sure no evil makes it to the earth realm. He becomes power crazy, tainted by evil and starts pre-emptively killing people which leads to Koronika (a time lord) to put balance back into the world and kill Raiden and remove him from history. It was interesting and gave lots of details and some explanation around each character and their place in the Mortal Kombat world. Other modes like Crypt (where you search for unlockables and upgrades) and the Towers (where you play an ever-increasing number of enemies in return for coins and power-ups) will keep you occupied.

"MK11U_2"

The gameplay is slick, fast and smooth. On the PS5, I did see the improvement from the previous-gen consoles, everything was slicker with higher frame rates. The load times are drastically reduced and it just feels more solid to play.

Each character has there own style, set of moves and fatality (finishing move). The finish moves are hyper-realistic and gore-tastic, they are quite sickening. Cinematic pre-rendered decapitations and extreme violence for which Mortal Kombat is known for is present and adds to the dark and sinister world you play. It's just great fun to play and there are 25 characters to play from, online modes, local modes and much more. As I haven't I played this in years, I'm nostalgic about the series and I thought this would taint my judgement, however, this game stands on its own two feet and uses the franchise to create a fun and ultimately slick game. If you want a good beat 'em up, you can't go wrong with this. With the new additional expansion packs, there is a roster of up to 37 characters to play with.

If you own MK11 on the PS4 or Xbox One Consoles, you get the PS5/Xbox series updates for free. There is crossplay available between all consoles which is fantastic.

"MK11U_3"

Additional Characters:

The Kombat Pack 1 includes Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, Sindel, The Joker, Terminator T-800 and Spawn and 25 additional character skins.

The Kombat Pack 2 includes a huge array of new characters including Rain, Rambo and Mileena.

If you have MK11 from the original release, the following add ons are available:

Kombat Pack 2

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Expansion

Kombat Pack 1

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate Add-On Bundle incl. The underlying retro style sets the entire tone for the game. I love the retro style, the bright colours, and the arcade-style racing game that doesn't take itself too seriously.

The game is an arcade-style drift racer, it's high paced, bright, and full of action. It's the opposite of the super-realistic games that have been at the fore lately. It has 16 tracks across 4 different environments which are fairly short and concise. There is an arcade mode, time trial, Grand Prix, cops & robbers, and drive or explode mode.

"hotshotracing1"

Hotshot Racing reminds me of a mix of Virtua Racing and Daytona USA but upgraded for the current generation of PC and consoles. The game still relies on simple card models, character models, and level models. They all have a current generation of polish to them which brings them to life. The gameplay is super simple, there is an emphasis on steering, drifting, and accelerating. On your first play, it will take you a minute or so to get used to controls if not less. There is no need to have a definitive racing line that you must take, you are left to own your devices and devise your strategy. The addition of the car boost adds to the arcade / coin-op feel.

The arcade, Grand Prix, and single race modes pit you against 7 other competitors and the winner takes all. In the case of Grand Prix mode, the driver with the most points over 4 games is the winner. These are the standard racing modes but Hotshot has two other fantastic modes - Drive or Explode and Cops & Robbers. These modes turn this arcade racer into a party game. In Cops & Robbers, you have to catch and destroy the other cars, the drive or explode mode requires you to stay above a certain speed or lose (think of the film Speed). These game modes with their chaotic nature are amazing breaks from arcade racing and will breed longevity into the game. I would have liked to see more game modes and more tracks but I think the game proposition is more than worth it without the additional game modes and tracks.

"hotshotracing2"

The Hotshot Racing contains a Boombastic and loud ass soundtrack that is loud and vibrant. It adds to the whole driving and racing experience. It plays homage to Ridge Racer and other arcade racers back in the 90s too. The speed of soundtrack and track changes as you progress through each race, the closer you get to complete the level, the more intense it gets building to a crescendo. The soundtrack is really well thought out and fits the game perfectly.

"hotshotracing3"

Hotshot Racing also has the ability of 8 players online and co-op play too. One fantastic feature that many games miss is the ability to play multiplayer locally, Hotshot Racing allows for up to 4 players to play locally or in co-op mode. The Switch allows for LAN play too. These features add another level of fun to a super enjoyable game. The ability to both play online and locally adds to the party mode and game experience too.

"hotshotracing4"

Hotshot Racing does a fantastic job of re-creating and improving the arcade racer. Its visuals are superb and the colours hit all the right notes. The characters, voice-overs, and general sound complement the game and make it more immersive. The addition of party games is a brilliant idea and executed superbly. The addition of more tracks and more party games is the only issue I have. The gameplay is fantastic and so easy to pick up and play. Ultimately the sense of speed and the combination of the soundtrack make this an impactful driving game.

Overall: 8.5/10

Developer: Coatsink, Stumpy Squid, Fury Studios

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One (Reviewed)

Genre: Adventure, Indie, Simulation, Strategy

Publisher: Raw Fury

Kingdom Two Crowns is a game from the Kingdom series. You may have heard of Kingdom: New Lands which was a reworked version of the original game. As for Kingdom Two Crowns, it’s a sequel in the series. Kingdom Two Crowns is a 2D side-scrolling strategy game developed by three developers: Coatsink, Stumpy Squid and Fury studios. The publisher of the game is Raw Fury who has published other games like Atomicrops and Night Call.

Cooperative play is something that differs Kingdom Two Crowns from its previous games. You can experience the wonders of the game by yourself or with a fellow friend, locally or online. I appreciate the new multiplayer feature as it heightens the game’s level of fun. With the Dead Lands DLC (which is a free update to the game), players can switch between four new monarchs inspired by the game Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

"Kingdom

You start your journey playing the role of a king or queen who rides atop their horse. You enter a realm in which you have to maintain your kingdom. Gold is very important in this game since it can be used to turn peasants into loyal subjects. You need to flourish your kingdom with many subjects and have them occupy a job to help defend your kingdom from the night terrors. As night falls, greedy creatures come out to steal your coins and crown, and once the crown is obtained by the pesky creatures, the kingdom has fallen. So it’s important to recruit, hunt, and upgrade your kingdom. You can also explore the depths of the mysterious forests where you will find loot, structures, mounts, and more to help you sustain your kingdom.

Kingdom Two Crowns consists of five different Islands. Each island has the same playthrough, where the Monarch establishes its permanent kingdom to survive the greed of the creatures. But the islands do differ from one another, both in size and difficulty. As you progress through the game and make your way to the next island, things will start to get more difficult. You will encounter new and stronger creatures that will try to steal your crown. For you to travel to other islands, you need a boat, and the boat on its own takes a while to repair. Once you are set and loaded on your island you can be ready to move on to the next island, but the longer you stay away from an island, your buildings begin to decay which can always make things very tedious.

"Kingdom

The controls for Kingdom Two Crowns are simple and minimal. As the game is a side-scrolling game, meaning that you go from one side to the other, the only moving controls are moving to the left and right. You then have other controls like a sprint, drop, pay, mount special, and monarch special. Overall the controls work very smoothly.

When first starting Kingdom Two Crowns you are appointed with three “game skins” to pick from. What this means is that you have the original art style and then you have a reskin of the game where it includes Japanese style elements to the game. The Japenese reskin is called Kingdom: Shogun. What is interesting is that the Japanese style introduces things like a samurai as your character, a bamboo forest, different lighting, and other captivating details. The reskin of the game is very nice as it gives players a new perspective to look at. The other reskin is the Kingdom: Dead Lands one, where the atmosphere is more dreary and ominous.

The art style of this game, in my opinion, is alluring. Everything is very minimalistic, but it works so well with its beautiful pixel art aesthetic. The attention to detail put in this game is also incredible. The reflection that you can see off your character in the water, the little fishes that jump everyone now and then. Everything in the game looks so calm and wonderful. The trees are ruffled and the lighting is so well set too. You can ride through the forest and have it be where the forest background has light shining through peaks of the leaves. The grass, even the roots in the dirt, the bunnies, and the overall style of the kingdom is perfectly designed.

"Kingdom

On top of that, the soundtrack and the sound effects are fitting too. I do have to say that the art style and sounds complement one another to create such a lovely atmosphere. Sound effects like the ping when the gold is used, the river running, the chopping of the trees, really helps the player feel like they are actually in the game. The music is also so calming, as you ride your horse through the forest, soft mellow music begins to play which sets this fantasy feel for the mood. The aesthetic of this game is beyond wonderful and so pleasing to look at and play with. It truly sits greatly with the standards of a “Kingdom”.

Kingdom Two Crowns, is an extremely enjoyable, pleasant, strategic game that has an appealing feel and looks to make the player want to keep playing. The game gives a wondrous experience, which dives into a fantasy stylized atmosphere that can be worthwhile on your own or with a friend.

Overall: 9.5/10

;

Exit the Gungeon (gun-themed dungeon) is the "all hell breaks out" dungeon shooter from Devolver Digital. It's a high paced and manic shooter that requires some serious reflexes and some quick thinking too. It's a rogue-like but more of a bullet hell kind of game. It's a throwback to old school arcade shooters.

"exitthegungeon_hta1"

Exit the Gungeon is a retro-style arcade shooter where you have to survive levels of enemies trying to kill you. The important parts from the gameplay apart from shooting the guns you get throughout each dungeon is using roll and jump mechanics. Jump and roll mechanics give you invincibility whilst in the air, this game requires you to roll and jump to navigate through bullets. It's easier than it sounds! You start the game with the blanks that clear the screen of enemy fire.

"exitthegungeon_hta2"

The addition of arsenal mode allows you to store weapons as you play and allows you to cycle through them in-game.

This game is a hectic arcade shooter you will love or hate. You will die a lot when you start off but once you get used to the mechanics, you will find the game lots of fun. I'm new to Exit the Gungeon and the first few hours were frustrating, to say the least. I'm a huge fan of arcade shooters and I enjoy rogue-likes even though I suck at them. This game will give you tons of hours of fun or regret, or equal measures of both. It's all out and hella-fun.

Overall: 9.5/10

;

Turrican is the classic 1990s shooter, platformer and adventure game. It combines several retro genres into one superb game. It's this mix that makes this a fantastic game to revisit.

Design-wise it compromises the classic side-scrolling levels of a 2D retro platformer but has all the action and mayhem of a shooter. The visuals have that classic 2D feel, with multi-tiered levels, Turrican's level design is excellent. The level designs have the traditional element of going from left to right linearly, however, levels go underground, into the water and the sky. The levels keep you guessing in terms how to progress through them, the designers have also managed to keep a sense of uncertainty as you progress through the levels. Other techniques such as environmental factors like wind, asteroid\\meteor storms, ice and water affect the levels as you play through them. The levels have a really rich depth and lots of enemies hidden around each corner. The platform elements are superb but also frustrating (in a good way) at times. Game difficulty is high throughout. There is one retroelement of timed levels which are in Turrican which add another level of difficulty. Turrican managed to make all these elements work seamlessly together to produce a brilliant rich gaming experience.

"turricanflashback1"

Controls and game mechanics are spot on, the controls feel tight, intuitive and responsive. The power-ups allow for you to choose different guns and the power gets ramped up. Your gun can match the type of style you want to play through levels. Players also can leverage bombs, rolling and powered attacks too. The soundtrack (Chris Huelsbeck) is superb for a 90s game, the music and sound effects stand out and lend another dimension to this game. It reflects what is going on in the game, the change in weather and level too. It all adds to the sense of this ever-changing game.

"turricanflashback4"

Modern-day updates include the ability to rewind, save the state and load the state of the game. The rewind features allow you to replay any point that you may die at, this will happen often, this is very useful due to the difficulty of the game and probably is the only way to finish the game! If you don't use the rewind feature, this game reminds of the super arcade games with limited continues. If you want a challenge try without the rewind.

"turricanflashback3"

Turrican is the original and sets the basis for all the other games, it's build and level design lay the foundation for the other 3 games. I found this to be the toughest and as it's the oldest, the visuals are lagging behind the others.

Turrican 2: The Final Fight has some extra guns and I found it not as tough as the original but the look, feel and the gameplay is similar. I would class Turrican and Turrican 2 similar in a lot of ways. Minor gameplay improvements and animations.

Mega Turrican and Super Turrican are very similar in look and feel, they look the best in the series and it's a toss-up between these two as which is my favourite. The graphics do the best they could in terms of 16-bit graphics. They both extend the complex level design and possibly get close to perfection for Turrican.

Turrican flashback contains 4 superb retro games to play, control-wise and gameplay-wise they play similarly. The later version of the games do boast better graphics and textures. The gameplay is superb throughout though, an amazing array of well-crafted platform levels mixed with a shooter. The mix of gameplay is chaotic, challenging and tons of fun. I don't remember playing the original but the games do show a level of polish for a game that is 30 years old. The modern-day features of rewind and saving game state take the edge of the difficulty of the game. A fantastic game to revisit or experience for the first time.

Overall: 8.5/10
Developer: Engine Software, Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft Chengdu, Ubisoft Pune Production

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X (Reviwed) |S

Genre: Arcade / Beat'em Up

Publisher: Ubisoft

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a classic side-scrolling beat 'em up in a 16-bit retro style, think Streets of Rage mixed with Scott Pilgrim. It's a real throwback to one of my favourite gaming genres, I know you don't see many side-scrolling beat em ups apart from the odd indie game. I love side-scrolling beat 'em ups.

"scottpilgrimvs_ce1"

The game is styled and themed with all things Scott Pilgrim from the characters, the locations and the bosses you meet throughout. Thematically it gets across the comic aspects of Scott Pilgrim well, the Scott Pilgrim vibe is omnipresent. The humour, language, sounds and soundtrack all fit in seamlessly to the game. It looks slick and has that 16-bit retro vibe going. Even the playstyle and gameplay does evoke memories of Streets of Rage on the Megadrive. The main story mode follows a couple of environments which lead to a boss and this formula continues for each boss. The gameplay is simple and straightforward.

"scottpilgrimvs_ce2"

The game does support up to 3 extra players playing locally or online. The extra game modes of Zombies, Dodgeball and Battle Royale do add some much-needed variety to the single-player. My favourite extra game is Boss Rush Mode which has you play all the bosses from the game in a row. I'm a major fan of game bosses in general and this is probably why I love it. Each boss has their moves and secret moves and is the best set of enemies in any game.

"scottpilgrimvs_ce3"

While Scott Pilgrim does a lot right: the style, theme and the beat em' classic for gameplay. The main game doesn't have that depth of variation to keep you glued to the game, after 2 or 3 levels you have pretty much seen the guts of the game and what is on offer. I'm a huge fan of side-scrolling beat 'em ups and I enjoyed it but didn't love it. However, the addition of online, local play and modes such as Zombies do add some much-needed variety and longevity to the game.

Overall: 6/10

HyperParasite is an old-school top-down twin-stick shooter rogue-like that is thematically tied to the 80s from the neon game sign to the movie character references, music and gameplay. It has that dystopian 1980s film feel to it.

"hyperparasite_1"

You are a parasite that is battling through reams of enemies, you can take over host bodies in the game. The parasite is reminiscent of venom. Hosts are an array of enemies you encounter. The parasite has very little defensive capabilities, i.e. usually on hit causes death. Hosts have a varying level of health and unique abilities - ranged or close combat. The name of the game is to capture a host and battle through the levels. You will encounter a midway boss and end boss level after you die a ton of times. You can upgrade the host, buy upgrades and gain new hosts throughout the game.

"hyperparasite_2"

HyperParasite does suffer from being quite difficult. The game is tough and you will find it to be a slog at times. Replaying same regenerated levels over and over to gain in-game cash. This in-game cash allows you to take over new hosts. This can be quite time consuming and frustrating. While this is fun when you start dying and gain very little in-game cash to buy new hosts, it can become a hard slog. The difficulty curve is steep but persistence is required.

The has a fitting 80s theme track by Van Reeves and Joe Kataldo, it fits the theme of the game perfectly. The game has a sense of humour, the visuals and the cultural references to 80s are all done well. It's a super slick game from presentation to gameplay. The game supports local two-player co-op mode too.

"hyperparasite_3"

The game despite its difficulty is super fun, however, at times you may find it a slog. It's a tough game. The novelty of taking control of the host mechanic is fun. Rogue-like elements also add to randomness and fun too. Soundtrack and visuals are in tune with the 80s retro feel too. I have to say I'll be playing this for a while.

"exitthegungeon_hta3"

This game is a hectic arcade shooter you will love or hate. You will die a lot when you start off but once you get used to the mechanics, you will find the game lots of fun. I'm new to Exit the Gungeon and the first few hours were frustrating, to say the least. I'm a huge fan of arcade shooters and I enjoy rogue-likes even though I suck at them. This game will give you tons of hours of fun or regret, or equal measures of both. It's all out and hella-fun.

Overall: 9.5/10

;

Overall: 9.5/10

;

Curse of the Dead Gods is a skill-based roguelike that is set in a temple dungeon. You navigate through a maze of levels, a host of nasty creatures and ultimately a boss in each temple. The game is played from an isometric perspective and the emphasis is on mastering the simple controls but in an extremely challenging environment.

"curseofthedeadgods1"

Initially, you are set up with a primary melee weapon (sword) and a ranged weapon (pistol), as you battle through each dungeon you will gain relics, power-ups and the ability to offer sacrifices to the gods. The game mechanics centre around a mix of using melee, ranged attacks, parrying and dodging. The critical element in terms of the gameplay is the difficulty level, precision is required throughout and using all the core game mechanics is the only way to survive to progress through the game. If the brutal nature of the difficulty setting isn't challenging enough, your character can become cursed which makes for an even tougher challenge. Each creature you encounter has its own unique set of attacks and defensive skills that you need to overcome. The difficulty setting may put players off but the rich variety of gameplay, playstyles and environments are superb. It should be noted that you will play for many hours to get the most of this game, this isn't a straight pick up and play, you will die a lot before you make any meaningful progress. The learning curve is fairly steep.

"curseofthedeadgods2"

The whole game is illustrated using a dark cartoon style. The environments and characters have an amazing level of detail, the temple dungeon theme ties in the levels, characters, demons and all the gameplay as well. The levels themself are darkly lit which are illuminated by a torch you carry or fires that can be set. Levels contain traps, treasure and a host of evil creatures lurking around each corner. The temples are immersive and the mechanics and joy of killing the creatures make you come back for more. The deeper you progress through each dungeon, the wider variety of levels that you will uncover and different challenges.

"curseofthedeadgods3"

Curse of the Dead Gods is a superb roguelike that marries difficult challenging experiences into this temple themed world. The game mechanics are simple and intuitive but requires skill and patience to master. The ability to level up with either gold or a blood sacrifice is a neat touch that is complemented by the addition of curses as you progress through each stage. The level design and gameplay feel are superb, the game is tough and rewarding. Multiple types of melee and ranged weapons allow you to build a play style that suits you. The world is a dark temple with tons of creatures looking to get you, it's a truly immersive experience.

Each boss has their moves and secret moves and is the best set of enemies in any game.

"scottpilgrimvs_ce3"

While Scott Pilgrim does a lot right: the style, theme and the beat em' classic for gameplay.

Overall: 9.5/10

;

Hades is the wonderful imagined rogue-like dungeon crawler. The game manages to delicately balance the rouge-like game with a story underneath, it's tough and difficult but each play-through allows you to power up to progress a little further each time. Every subsequent run is a little easier. This is set in the wonderfully reimagined Underworld with a host of characters from Greek mythology and you play as Zagreus and his journey to escape.

The game centres on Zagreus (son of Hades) and his journey out of the Underworld. You start with a weapon that has a normal and a special attack, you can unlock more weapons as you progress through the game. You can cast a gem too that can inflict damage. These are your primary forms of attack. You have a dash/dodge mechanic too. As you progress through the game you gain power-ups (boons), these last for several dungeons, until you die or until you replace them. These power-ups are vital to surviving each dungeon and ultimately escaping. The combination of your initial weapon of choice and the power-ups define your playstyle through that run and each run is different due to the random nature of power-ups. That's the game in a nutshell in a simplistic form.

"hades1"

The developers have kept the gameplay super simple but allowed for an amazing array of character build types from melee, ranged or somewhere in between. Then the power-up mechanism has a huge array of choice and combinations too. As with any rogue-like, you will die a lot. I found the numerous character playstyles that varied so much through each run which gave the game longevity and its novelty factor. There wasn't a point in the game after 30 hours of game time that I felt bored, it just was engrossing and engaging, it was tons of fun. It was so much fun and difficult too.

"hades2"

Hades is primarily a cartoon(y) art style, the Underworld has several stages that are themed too. Each stage has its nuances and level design features that can be used to your advantage. There is a huge cast of characters of Greek Gods from Hermes to Athena to Ares to name a few, each with their personality and voice-over too. The voice-overs and acting are superb which adds a whole another dimension to the gameplay and storytelling elements. The characters help to paint the world around you and your place in it. Humour is used effectively too to enhance the storytelling aspects as well. The lighting, sound effects and level design are amazing. Hades combines an amazingly addictive rogue-like with a fantastic story and setting to boot. The choice of Greek Mythology is present with the costumes, weapon designs and every artefact at every level.

"hades3"

Hades achieves so much that many rogue-likes games want to accomplish and does it in an amazingly and thoroughly enjoyable way. The visuals are superb and every aspect is artistically rendered with a meticulous eye for detail. The use of Greek mythology sets the scene for the game as you battle your way out of the Underworld. The art style is lush, vibrant and dark amidst the background of the Underworld. It delivers an amazing story with fantastic voice acting. The story is intriguing and has the right amount of humour to enhance it even more. Every character looks stunning and the voice acting ties the story and gameplay together. The voice-overs are a masterstroke too, this helps elevate the storytelling. The game achieves a wonderful balance between being not forgiving but giving you enough bonus and power-ups for subsequent plays. You will die a lot but the game balance is fair and the more you play, the more persistent power up and perks you can use for the next run through. This is what a rogue-like should aim to achieve.

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.

The addition of arsenal mode allows you to store weapons as you play and allows you to cycle through them in-game.

This game is a hectic arcade shooter you will love or hate. You will die a lot when you start off but once you get used to the mechanics, you will find the game lots of fun.

It's nice to revisit a game with such great gameplay that's stripped back and super fun.

Overall: 9/10
Developer: NetherRealm Studios

Platforms: PC, PS5 (Reviewed), PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch

Genre: Action, Fighting

Publisher: Warner Bros. Games

Mortal Kombat 11 (MK11) is the 11th incarnation of the goriest fighting game ever.

Overall: 9.5/10

;
