Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition (€79.99) contains two games: Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (€59.99 on its own) and Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered.

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered is an updated version of the original classic with beefed up graphics and the addition of a performance mode which manages 60fps (dynamic 4K) frame rate. There are vast improvements in the texture and rendering of the environments. Everything is more realistic and the attention to detail is to behold: the weather, lighting, and the people in this world. It feels like a real-life city with improved graphics. Ray-tracing (30fps) reflections are evident as you move through the urban sprawl of Manhattan. Character animation is even more lifelike, and this extra lick of paint adds another glossy layer to this stunning game. The character was remodelled for the game to have improved resolution. These performance updates also apply to the new Miles Morales story. If you haven't played the original game on the PS4, this is a worthy addition to any players library. The city of New York is the environment for this Peter Parker inspired version of the game. This is the vibrant imagining of New York is also the setting of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Miles is the central character (Miles Morales story), the story follows his trials and tribulations as being the new Spider-Man on the block. This revisiting of the original Spider-Man (thematically) as he comes to term with his powers and his place in the world. The themes of family, discovery, maturing, and the lack of black-white scenarios are ubiquitous in this game. Just like the original Spider-Man game, you have a deep and rich story arc with many characters playing into the narrative of the world. The original Spider-Man excelled at storytelling - it made the game feel like a playable interactive movie. a while. I am unfamiliar with Miles as a character from the comics. Miles is duty-bound by honour and loyalty to his family as he tries to come to terms with his powers.

"MSM_MilesMorales_PS5_2"

There are two factions in this world that Spider-Man must get to grips with - the Underground and the Roxxon corporation. The Underground are a terrorist group with aspirations of taking over New York, whereas Roxxon is the security firm of New York. In between the two factions, we will see a host of other characters like Rhino. The game is centred around a web of connections, stories and links between Spider-Man and his world. Gameplay in the story mode is linear but there are plenty of side missions and collectables in the world. The levelling up system allows you to adapt your style of play to how you want your character to be. The gameplay is varied with the choice of all action or the meticulous stealth approach to beat the enemies.

"MSM_MilesMorales_PS5_3"

This Miles Morales story is another fantastic addition to the Spider-Man series. The immersive nature of the storytelling mixed in with playability of the game creates a living and breathing world. Before you know it, you become entangled in the characters and their story. The gameplay is superb with the addition of this fantastic story to make the game shine. The environment, animation, ray-tracing (30fps), and the 60fps (dynamic 4K) frame rate on the PS5 are breath-taking. The game is pure joy. The fighting elements are superb too, the sense of achievement as you chain together massive combos. The voice acting, directing, and production makes this a brilliant game. It's quite the introduction to our new web-slinger.

I'd recommend playing the first game before starting your adventure in this game, there is a fair bit of context in the game you may miss but it will add even more to the experience of the Last of Us Part II.

The Last of Us Part II follows Ellie and her journey five years after the first game, at this point the United States is still infected with huge swathes of zombies and you navigate this world. Ellie has settled well with life in Jackson after the traumas of the first game. The game is a mix of zombie survival, third-person shooter and a puzzle game with an amazing and gripping story that is underpinning it all and lifting the game to new levels of greatness. Naughty Dog has outdone themselves with an amazing cinematic and immersive experience. I found the narrative, pace of the game and storytelling gripping. It's addictive, surprising and pure joy to play, this is what gaming should be all about. It combines the best parts of gaming and a movie to make this masterpiece.

"TLOUPII_Screenshot_11"

Even though the mechanics of the game follow the well-trodden third-person survival horror game, the game stands out as each mechanic in the game has a purpose and a rightful place in the game. Every game mechanic helps you bond with Ellie and the world she inhabits. Every aspect of gameplay has a purpose which complements and enhances the storytelling throughout. It's the combination of Ellie, game mechanics, the cast of characters, the storyline, voice acting and game design that is done with such attention to detail that makes the game such a superb and immersive game. You feel like you have been transported to Jackson various other playable areas.

"TLOUPII_Screenshot_09"

The storyline and themes in the game help the player empathise and understand the perspective of the characters. The story also helps to weave the characters and provide a realistic and engaging narrative that makes you want to find out more. While the gameplay is relatively linear in a somewhat open-world, this doesn’t detract from the experience at all. The Last of Us Part II incorporates the best aspects of a film and game in one experience. It's shot beautifully, every aspect of the game has a purpose and point to the game.

"TLOUPII_Screenshot_18"

The game mechanics, the controls, level design and general level of playability is something to behold. In this dark apocalyptic world, the game really strives to give you a sense of the chaos, madness and sheer craziness of this world. It's a dog eat dog world where only the tough and smart survive. Controls are intuitive and you feel in full control of Ellie, you feel as if you are in her place and experiencing her trials and tribulations. The beautiful landscapes and environments help to bring this world to life. Conversations and the character interaction add to the whole sense of being immersed too. Everything in this game has been put together meticulously.

"TLOUPII_Screenshot_14"

This is by far the best game I have played in years, there is so much to love in this game. Obviously, there is a striking visual upgrade that displays the graphical power of the PS4. The sound, level design, voice acting and open world give a real grand sense to the game. This open world game is then inhabited by just huge monsters or colossi. Shadow of the Colossus is a gaming experience of beauty, fun, great game play and a really simplistic but addictive gaming model.

"shadow-of-the-colossus-screen-03"

Shadow of the Colossus gives away very little terms of story or plot apart from that lead character wants to resurrect his love from the dead and that's pretty much it. This novel approach to storytelling in games should be adopted by more games. His motivation and desire to resurrect here isn't explored and he just does as he is told. You willing play this role. It's nice to have a game that understands that while a story can complement and enhance a game, a game is nothing without solid gameplay and a fun factor. This game displays both in abundance which lead to high levels of joy.

"shadow-of-the-colossus-screen-06"

At the heart of a real simple story at the surface and not much detail is an intriguing and beautifully designed gaming experience. One that keeps drawing you back in and one you don't want to put down. I loved mysterious story aspect that maintains an air of uncertainty about throughout. This also means that you pretty much start playing the game after the main introduction and before you know it, you encounter your first Colossus. This game really brings gaming back to basics,a real focus on the gameplay. It strips the gameplay to just what is required and even though seems simple, designing a game to play fluidly requires much skill. Int this open world. you will only encounter huge bosses for the entirety of the game which is real departure for open world games. The open world is a huge expanse that you can explore on your horse. I found the controls for the horse to be a bit clunky and unresponsive but all the other controls were smooth and solid. Game design doesn't focus on the interaction of bit part characters in a huge narrative. It just focuses you killing bosses (colossi), it's really that simple but amazingly great fun.

"shadow-of-the-colossus-screen-05"

The colossi or huge bosses, are these towering characters who take up your whole screen and make your character seem even smaller than he is. A few simple game mechanics are only needed to beat each boss and to navigate through the world. Again, more simplicity leads to a richer more fun experience. The game designers have the mantra of making something enjoyable, fun and challenging. They completed this remit amazingly well and delivered a well rounded and exciting game. I thought the game was a joy to play and feast for the eyes. Pure awesome fun.

"shadow-of-the-colossus-screen-02"

Visually stunning
Intriguing
Simple but masterful game plan
Amazing detail
Stunning bosses
Engrossing gameplay

Overall: 9 / 10

Dark Horse Books, Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment proudly offer a look back at the history of the iconic Ratchet & Clank series in a Qwark-tastic collection of never-before-seen concept art. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is the latest adventure of Sackboy on the Playstation, this time he returns to a fully 3D world akin to Super Mario World, but with all the paraphernalia that is associated with Little Big Planet. This 3D world is constructed of various types of fabric, cloth and crafting items. Sackboy follows the well-trodden path of the world-based sections of 3D platformers. Each world has a set of levels that follows a certain theme. The game has the standard and generic plot of good versus evil. In this instance, involving an epic quest in which Sackboy must journey through a series of worlds. The presentation and direction do help drive a firm narrative through the game.

"sackboyadventure1"

Sackboy and the worlds in 3D do look exquisite, the level design is done superbly well with a mix of levels. Levels vary from speed runs to your standard side-scrolling linear platform levels. The levels themself use colour, the soundtrack (which is amazing) and this stitched together feel to bring this game to life. Each element from the bad guys, to the puzzles and Sackboy, complement the levels well. The use of actors and some fantastic voice-overs is to be noted. The soundtrack and voice acting add to the level's atmosphere and shows the creativity of designers. The level design and storyline have a super polish feel and the cute design of the world contrasts with the darkness of the enemies in the game. There is a whole raft of licenced music in the game. The game is geared towards family but there are enough elements to keep every player occupied.

"sackboyadventure2"

The game is pure platformer goodness that doesn't require a whole lot to learn from a mechanics point of view. The game is an exploration of the Little Big Planet world in 3D, this is a real experience of Sackboy being transferred into this sumptuous 3D world that fits the character so well. Thematically and game design is exactly what seems to make sense for Sackboy and this wondrous world. It's a dreamy adventure. I did find the game not to be particularly difficult as apart from a few time trials. It's learning curve is low.

4 player local co-op play is available, but I haven't been able to play more than a single player. Online multiplayer will be available via a patch coming by the end of 2020. The game supports 4k at 60 fps too.

"sackboyadventure3"

The game is a resurrection of the 3D platformer which is rarely explored, it's like a reboot for Sackboy for modern generation consoles and this makes a good stab of getting the gameplay, world, soundtrack and voice acting into a cohesive story and in turn a game. Sackboy is geared a bit more towards younger ages but I had lots of fun and the licensed music was a pleasant surprise. There are lots to like but a bit too family-friendly for me but I'm not the target audience.

The gameplay, story, voice acting, beautiful landscapes, the dark apocalyptic world and cast of characters bring this game together to give the player a wonderful gaming and cinematic experience. Once you pick up the play this game, you will find it near impossible to put down. It’s a mixture of pure joy and engrossing experience that games are all about.

Overall: 10/10

Developer: Bluepoint Games

Platform:PlayStation 4

Genre: Action-adventure

Published by: Sony Interactive Entertainment

The Shadow of the Colossus is a remake of a PS2 game, this is a truly a magnificent upgrade from the original and a remake that is well worth experiencing.

Returnal is the next generation sci-fi based roguelike 3D person shooter from Housemarque that is exclusive to PS5. While this intro tries to summarise the game in a short sentence it doesn't do this game the justice it deserves. The game thematically lies somewhere between sci-fi, mystery and some horror elements this is due to the Alien-esque nature of encounters with the enemies. The gameplay is a roguelike as you die a lot and lose the majority of your perks apart from a few permanent items as well. The game covers a lot of genres of game and themes too.

You are Selene who has crashed landed on Atropos (an alien planet) where you are searching for a broadcast signal and this is all you know and this is how the story is set up. From the initial frame, the impressive cinematics and the crash land help to set up the story and mystery of the game. Very little is given away which creates a level of intrigue and mystery, this is all set in the beautiful dark and wonderful of Atropos. The design and layout do give off Alien vibes throughout the game. As the game is a roguelike where you will die a lot, more story elements and your understanding of the world grows with every cycle (loop) of the game.

It's difficult to pinpoint and place the game in one genre but the game has elements of Hades, a bullet hell shooter, Doom, Metroid Prime and the Hades comparison comes from the roguelike nature as well as some well-crafted storytelling wherein each cycle more is revealed. Doom in terms of the fast-paced shooter elements but 3rd person. The bullet hell feels of the enemies you encounter and just the manic nature of the enemies you encounter. There are lots of platforming elements too and an amount of discovery at each level.

"returnal1"

The levels are procedurally generated so each run will have a varied gaming experience and a novel feel, also each run will have a slightly different difficulty level too depending on what power-ups are available.

The power-up system is varied due to various upgrades and collectable items. Straight-up power-ups that have a positive effect include weapon upgrades, health upgrades and efficiency upgrades. You can fabricate and make other upgrades too. Then you have malignant upgrades/power-ups that can have positive as well as negative effects, the negative effects can be removed by completing specific tasks or you may be lucky and avoid the negative malignant effect. The game has a multitude of effects and events that will vary each run and which can make the run easier or tougher as well. There is a huge emphasis on risk and reward throughout the choices you make. That's why I'd also classify that the difficulty varies depending on your run, upgrades available and the procedural levels that are updated.

Each loop/cycle whereby you die and come back act as a learning and help to introduce into other devices in the game such as collectable items, upgrades and power-ups. It will take several deaths in the game before you start the whole power-up systems as well as the collectables available and their power. Every inevitable death allows you to progress further in the story but also allows you to start with more permanent power-ups. The game does a great job of walking you through each element and its potential effect. I enjoyed that you learned more and more things as you progressed.

"returnal2"

The game starts in this dark rain-sodden forest where very little is known, the detailed environments add the dark atmospheric vibes. Even though the levels are procedurally generated there is a good mix of items to collect and platform elements amongst the all-out shooter action. The game uses some clever narrative technique including the use of 1st person view for story elements and that you pick up voice messages from yourself all over Atropos. You are primarily in 3rd person view which gives you a broad view of each area and heightens the gameplay elements. Each voice note adds a little more detail of what is going in the world and helps the drive.

The world reminds me a lot of the film Prometheus with a clear Alien vibe throughout the whole game. While I wouldn't classify the game as a horror it does give that sense in large parts of the game as enemies spawn out of nothingness. Even though each level isn't huge, the art style and level design give the game a huge sense of scale and the huge world that exists. The game melds level design, Alien themes and this dark atmospheric tone which gives the sense you are a small survivor in a huge vicious world.

A lush map that helps to guide you from level ("room") to level provides a navigation mechanism and helps you to find upgrades and power-ups whilst giving a sense of direction. The map allows you to plot a path for gaining the most buffs and power-ups or you can bypass them and head more directly to a boss.

"returnal3"

The dual sense and haptic feedback are integrated seamlessly into Returnal. Every feature of the dual sense has been considered in the design and gameplay elements. The first thing that hit was the haptic feedback, the gentle vibrations that mimic rain and the use of sound to further engross you into the world of Atropos. Dualsense gives feedback such as the ground you are treading on, rainfall and tremors from enemies. It's all these little things that add to the whole sense of game immersion.

The L2 trigger serves as two buttons where pressing until halfway gives a zoomed fire whereas pushing past the tension point gives the L2 button an alternate fire. Again the haptic feedback provides a system whereby you feel more immersed in the game and these small but clever uses of the controller are enjoyable and make sense. The dual sense gives a real tactile feel to the game and what is going.

3D audio is the other buzzword and the game promotes amazing sound effects and soundtrack. I own just regular headphones but the world seems more alive when I play with headphones, I could hear every element of the world from the weather, enemies and my footsteps. The audio and soundtrack are superb.

"returnal5"

The main game mode is the rogue-like one player shooter whereby you have to kill every enemy to reach a boss to progress to the next biome. There are two other modes available, online mode and challenges.

The online mode is more along the lines that you can avenge or take the gear of other fallen Selenes in your world, this is illustrated by a corpse of Selene that you will find with the Gamertag of the fallen Selene.

Challenges are like an arcade run where you have to achieve certain goals and you will be placed on a leaderboard to gain ultimate grabbing rights.

While I have only spent a few hours playing on the day 1 patch, the day 1 patch improves navigation and identifies exits to each room in the game. This improves the visual aids to the user which is noticeable in the first level. There are some texture improvements on both Selene and enemies you encounter too, the colours on the enemies are more vivid. The majority of the day 1 patches are extra visual polish on the game. The game does seem to run smoother however this is only a slight tweak and the difference isn't massive compared to the 20 hours plus I played on the pre-day 1 patch version. Day 1 patch mainly is adding extra polish to a stunning game.

"returnal4"

The game is quite challenging and can be unforgiving at times if I'm being honest, the learning curve is steep and I would classify the game as hard. It does become easier as you progress through every run and learn more about the powerups and shortcuts that are available. If you are used to bullet shooter or roguelike games, then you may find the difficulty level to your taste, the difficulty doesn't detract from the experience but enhances the overall gameplay and longevity of the game.

I have to say from the first run through the game to my last run-through, I found myself in awe of different elements of the game. I was struck by the intro, the crash landing and just seeing this world, the cinematics is superb and it felt movie-like. The use of the dual sense and haptic feedback just made the whole experience more immersive, sound effects, and noises, while these may seem small, the whole Returnal experience was enhanced. The use of the story narrative where you piece a little bit more with each run adds a whole lot of mystery and intrigue. Finding voice messages from different versions of Selene dotted throughout the world makes the narrative even more powerful and a bit of mind bend. The gameplay has a mix of action, shooter and platformer with some puzzles thrown in for good measure. Big huge scary monsters are rendered and look amazing. The boss fights are big and epic. The game has lots of variety and requires several run-throughs before you gain a thorough understanding of all the gameplay mechanics and what is possible. It's a game that has all the elements above but is great fun too, the pace is spot on, there is variety in how you play. The game is challenging, you will come back for more. Each game mechanic, each game design and each decision by developers all enhance the game and make it even more impactful. It's a superb hell of a ride.

Demon's Souls is the next-generation version and reboot built from the ground up of the PS3 classic. I'm just putting this out there, I haven't played the PS3 version, it's one of the PS consoles I didn't get. Demon's Souls is brand new to me. I don't have any nostalgic baggage of playing the game though it's considered a classic. I have played Bloodbourne though I will be my reference point for aspects of my game review. Demon's Souls is a third-person action RPG that is considered one of the hardest games.

"demons_

For those familiar with the PS3 version, this game looks like a beautifully updated version of the PS3 game. I usually quickly skip through the character creation introduction, but I did spend time on it and marvelled at the rendering of the faces. The game has several classes that you can create your custom character from - Knight, Thief, Magician, and Wanderer to name a few. Gameplay involves navigating quite a linear path to kill a host of monsters. An increasing presence of demons has plagued the world and must be stopped. The game is unforgiving in many ways, while the controls are simple, the player is required to use their endurance effectively to strategically kill enemies while ensuring you don't die. An all-out attack approach in Demon's Souls will lead to many deaths where entire sections of the game must be replayed. You will die over and over.

"demons_souls_2"

It's slick and polished from the very first frame of the game through its entirety. Every creature, beast and monster you meet throughout the game looks stunning. Boss enemies (some are huge) rendered in meticulous detail, each gruesome and gory detail is brought to life. The environments vary from a mixture of ruined castles, keeps, moats, fields and decaying buildings. The use of light and shading lends itself another sense of the unknown to the player. Enemies are hiding in the shadows and creep up on you as you progress through each level. It has the right mix of difficulty, level progression, levelling up mixed in with a beautiful environment and sound to boot. It has the feel of a game that has been lovingly built up and each aspect of the gameplay while infuriating (when you die) make Demon's Souls a fantastic journey.

Demon Souls looks amazing in 4K, the game supports 4K 30fps in cinematic mode and 1440p upscaled to 4K at 60fps (dynamic 4k). Demon's Souls has both PVP and Co-op modes available that are unlocked early in the game. You can play with friends or other Souls players.

"demons_souls_3"

Demon's Souls is the best release title for the PS5. It looks amazing and plays just as well. While some players will find the game very difficult, it requires time and dedication to get to most of this game. It's not a lie, it's a challenge but tons of fun. There is a huge emphasis on strategy, levelling up and being wary of enemies. The bosses are fantastic, and they get tougher as you progress the game. You will die a lot, but you just need to persist. Demon's Souls is exciting, tough but it is a fantastic must own launch title. Demon's Souls the launch title to beat all launch titles
