I'm familiar with the series and the gameplay though. Space Invaders Forever contains three games Space Invaders Extreme, Arkanoid vs Space Invaders and Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSpace Invaders Gigamax 4 SE is a revisiting classic 1978 version of the game that boasts four-player gameplay too. The game is a loving rendition of the classic game. A little blocky spaceship at the bottom of the screen that has to survive the onslaught of the invaders. The graphics and gameplay are stripped and basic. Sound effects are of the 70's era, it's relatively slow-paced compared to the other two games. As you progress through the game you get to experience the modern version of Space Invaders with enhanced graphics and sounds.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nArkanoid vs Space Invaders hits differently as it's Arkanoid in the Space Invaders theme world. The music is loud, brash and full of dance beats. The game is more strategy as opposed to the shooter like the classic game. It has a real modern arcade game feel with the all-important boss levels. It has a real sense of satisfaction as you progress through the levels.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSpace Invaders Extreme is the updated version of Space Invaders that is my favourite of three games. The game is a mixture of psychedelic madness mixed with a dance soundtrack which is awesome, the gameplay has the classic downward scrolling invaders but in this game, you get an upgrade of powers and bonus levels too. The visuals are euphoric and the gameplay matches it with its frenetic pace. Gameplay-wise, I can't fault, it's just tons of fun, It's a throwback to old school arcade games. This game is also available in multiplayer too.<\/span>\r\n\r\nI was surprised how much the updated versions of the games hit the spot. The games are fun, bright and the soundtracks are fantastic. All three retro games are worth playing. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. The first impressions of NBA 2K21 is a visual feast that will behold you. I'm a rookie at NBAs game and in general, I was impressed by the game. Off the bat, I don't understand the full mechanics and rules of basketball so my view is how the game plays from a limited understanding of basketball.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

<\/p>\r\n

I haven't played an NBA 2K game in a long time, I'm new to the franchise. I found the realism and the mechanics of the game super smooth. I kept coming back for more. The visuals maintained a solid 60 fps at 4k with ray tracing support, the game moves slickly and has a good feel. It's a mixture of next-gen graphics, with the solid player likeness and little slow down when playing offline. Load times were super quick and once in-game, I didn't feel much of the annoyance of loading. It plays well once you understand the controls and how it plays, I had to do a few tutorials and practice games before I could actually play it. All the stars from the league are there. There is also a host of game modes such as MyCareer and MyTeam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

<\/p>\r\n

The MyCareer and MyTeam modes are heavy on the monetisation and microtransactions. I never liked the career modes in sports, the game, I feel the attempt to mix drama and sport through a narrative odd. I find it cringe. To be honest the story of the MyCareer mode is fairly cheesy but the path of progressing from high school basketball to college and the draft is a nice addition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

<\/p>\r\n

The MyTeam mode allows you to build your team and build up as you see fit, I have played the similar game modes in Fifa and I just don't enjoy this, I much prefer playing with the current crop of teams. I'm not a massive fan of microtransactions so it's also not my thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Online play, I found online gameplay a bit hit and miss, some games had little lag and others quite a bit. When there were no lag or internet issues, I did enjoy getting beat online quite a bit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

<\/p>\r\n

NBA 2K21 is lots of fun but I haven't been up to date with the series for a while. I love sports and the dynamics of a sports game, for me it was nice to revisit basketball and play something enjoyable and different to football. The core gameplay of basketball is something I kept re-visiting, the online modes were a bonus. If you like building up your team or building up yourself a player then the MyGamer and MyTeam will have you hooked.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It has a superb mixture of realism and amazing combat and there is next-console updates and new additional fighters available.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe visuals (dynamic 4K at 60 fps) and animation of the game stand out before anything else, the character design, voiceover, background and player movement is superb. I usually just button bash my way through fighting games but I did the tutorials to learn the moves. It was worth doing, the few hours put into the tutorials and training modes helped to immersive myself in a character (Liu Kang and Scorpion) and chain combos with a few special moves that I know. Once, I got a handle on a character or two, I decided to play the story mode which surprisingly is quite good and allows you to play as other characters. I don't know the whole back story. In this episode, Raiden (a lightning god) is over with a desire to make sure no evil makes it to the earth realm. He becomes power crazy, tainted by evil and starts pre-emptively killing people which leads to Koronika (a time lord) to put balance back into the world and kill Raiden and remove him from history. It was interesting and gave lots of details and some explanation around each character and their place in the Mortal Kombat world. Other modes like Crypt (where you search for unlockables and upgrades) and the Towers (where you play an ever-increasing number of enemies in return for coins and power-ups) will keep you occupied.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe gameplay is slick, fast and smooth. On the PS5, I did see the improvement from the previous-gen consoles, everything was slicker with higher frame rates. The load times are drastically reduced and it just feels more solid to play.<\/span>\r\n\r\nEach character has there own style, set of moves and fatality (finishing move). The finish moves are hyper-realistic and gore-tastic, they are quite sickening. Cinematic pre-rendered decapitations and extreme violence for which Mortal Kombat is known for is present and adds to the dark and sinister world you play. It's just great fun to play and there are 25 characters to play from, online modes, local modes and much more. As I haven't I played this in years, I'm nostalgic about the series and I thought this would taint my judgement, however, this game stands on its own two feet and uses the franchise to create a fun and ultimately slick game. If you want a good beat 'em up, you can't go wrong with this. With the new additional expansion packs, there is a roster of up to 37 characters to play with.<\/span>\r\n\r\nIf you own MK11 on the PS4 or Xbox One Consoles, you get the PS5\/Xbox series updates for free. Ti\u1ebfn is a young boy living in America, the only child of immigrant parents from Vietnam. Having grown up in the States his entire life, his first language is English. Which unfortunately means that there is a difficult language barrier at times when he wishes to speak to his parents, as they are still trying to learn the language. In order to include them more, Ti\u1ebfn reads fairy tales with them every night ever since he was a little boy. The only problem is, that the one subject he wishes to talk about most isn\u2019t found in your traditional fairy tales. So just how is Ti\u1ebfn going to come out to his parents?<\/span><\/p>\n

First off, this really was an interesting story. I haven't come across many that deal with the same scenario that Ti\u1ebfn is living in. Born to immigrant parents, and not being fluent in the language his parents have grown up with. I can see that his parents work incredibly hard for the life they currently have, and as we see by his mothers\u2019 actions they have been saving money for several years in order to go back to visit their families back in Vietnam. Which would act as a first meeting for Ti\u1ebfn and his wider family, even though he is already about twelve years old I say. In order to set their son up and give him the best start in America, they solely focussed on him having English as his first language. A difficult decision to make, as it does suggest they made a big sacrifice in regards to their identity and where they came from by not being able to pass that on to their son. The biggest barrier they face though, is this language connection and trying to find a perfect balance between both their native languages. Although his parents do try their best, they are also incredibly busy with their jobs in order to stay afloat and being able to send money back home to Vietnam to care for their ailing parents. This is a sad tale and its not completely fiction, as there are people today that still struggle with the same living standards and cultural barriers within families who have also made the dangerous journey of fleeing to another country in order to live a better life. All you have to do is look at the news.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ti\u1ebfn seems to have some bit of understanding about the struggles his parents have gone through in order to give him the life they now have. He can see how tired his father is when he returns home from work, the odd jobs his mother has. As well as the numerous times that even just his clothes need to be mended, instead of replacing them with something new. Ti\u1ebfn has his own struggles as well, which include his self confidence and the guilt he feels, as he does not know how to act on his feelings towards his best guy friend. This story is also based in the 1990\u2019s, so ideals and community values were still high and expected to be inline with what the Church thought - much like Ireland was at the time. So for Ti\u1ebfn to even talk about or approach anyone about his sexuality, was met with having to be reeducated and being forced to talk to the local clergyman. He not only had no support that he could reach out to, because of either a language barrier or not knowing who to trust. Combined with the sudden family tragedy, he had a lot of emotional baggage to deal with at the time. This is certainly a book worth reading, as it puts it all down to a human level and one that makes it instantaneous to connect with the characters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The majority of this book is also a retelling of a fairy tale called \u2018Tattercoats\u2019, as well as versions of the Little Mermaid and Cinderella. Versions that I have not read before, but were beautifully drawn and told. They fitted in well alongside the main story, but left me wanting to read more about these children's classics by the end. Now this book isn\u2019t entirely fiction, as it is somewhat based off of the childhood of the author. Trung Le Nguyen was born from Vietnamese Immigrants that arrived in the US. Having learnt both English and Vietnamese side by side when he was young, just like his main character they also shared the same pastime of borrowing fairy tales from the library. Which led to family discussions about the stories and eventually their language barrier developed its own balance, as they all used a hybrid of both English & Vietnamese at home. A balance which Ti\u1ebfn and his mother are searching for.<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to experience this book in all its glory, you are just going to have to pick it up for yourself. As I fear I am failing to describe, just how influential this story may become for so many people. You can find the book now, in both digital and print. Even better yet, go and grab the hardback copy from your local bookstore!<\/span><\/p>\n

Grace Field House is an orphanage and home to 38 children, who have all lived there since they were 1 years old. Set in what seems to be an ideal location, with plenty of fresh air and plenty of grass to play on & woods to play tag in. Their daily lives include doing chores, then several hours of academic tests, before given free time to play outside. The three eldest children in this orphanage are Emma, Norman and Ray, who also happen to have the best test scores. Their lives are more or less carefree and the only sadness they experience is when one of their siblings gets adopted and leaves. When that day comes for the young Conny, she absentmindedly forgets her beloved stuffed toy, Little Bunny. Wanting to reunite her with her stuffed animal and bid her one last farewell, Emma and Norman take chase after her and Mom before they leave the compound.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, what the two find beyond the gate is sickening, as they discover a dark truth about not only their lives, but their home and the World around them. Their carefree days are gone forever, as they now must put their heads together to come up with a plan to leave their home alive - with all their siblings!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Promised Neverland Season One - was an incredible series from start to finish! With a fantastic set up, where you could connect to each one of the characters instantly, as you felt sympathy towards them as they were all orphans. Then all of a sudden, we share the same moment of realisation when they discover that the world they live in is a harsh, cruel and practically demonic hell. Much like the premise of Attack on Titan, these humans are being raised as food. Yet how can they fight back? Well right now, all they can do is try to escape without being found out. But just how many people can Norman and Emma afford to bring in on the truth and the potential escape plan? It\u2019s a race against the clock, as they have to escape before they lose another beloved sibling to the next shipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

So we have three main characters in this show, who act as the masterminds to the escape. First off we have the bubbly Emma, who is beyond determined to save all of her siblings. Then we have the strategic Norman, who prepares for numerous outcomes in order to outmaneuver Mom. Then we have Ray, who has been reading up on the outside World and testing the boundaries for the past 6 years. He is crucial to not only the escape, but how best they can survive when they get beyond the wall. With 38 children in the house, there are numerous personalities and talents. There are even a number of younger children that are bound to be just as talented as Norman and Ray in a few years. Mom, who is their caretaker, hides a dark secret and is far more menacing than what we first believed. The overall enemy though, I am not going to go into as it is what could be a big spoiler. Overall it really is a fantastic show from start to finish, and season two is just around the corner with a premier date of the 7th January 2021 in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n

After watching this first season I was itching to know more, so I picked up the manga. Thanks to the Shonen Jump app, which you can download onto your phone from the Play Store. I signed up to their subscription service and for just \u20ac1.99 a month, I can read all the Shonen Jump manga I want! From DragonBall to Bleach, Black Clover to Dr. Stone, and even Jojo\u2019s Bizarre Adventure - as well as 100\u2019s more all on one app. With new English translations to the latest Shonen Jump manga updated daily, you will never be stuck for something to read! So thanks to this app, I have already read all of The Promised Neverland manga series from start to finish. And let me tell you this, Season Two is going to be intense!<\/span><\/p>\n

Now back to the anime, this release is being handled by the hardworking folks over at Anime Limited and they have given it a Collector\u2019s Edition treatment. In it you will find 2 BluRay discs housed in a lovely box cover, but the inside sleeve cover features black and white sketches of the children, as though they came straight from the manga pages. Making for a really stunning piece to look at, from the cheery looking illustration of the outside box art which then clashes with the dark reality of the show, to the inside box art that shows the children with a look of sudden realization and acceptance of the reality they are living - as livestock. The facial expressions on the children are like night and day when you compare the two box arts side by side.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only do we get the beautiful box art, we also get an astounding 112 page booklet with this collector's edition. Which is jam packed full of character designs, background art and interviews with both the director and cast from the Japanese and English dub members.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is ultimately a show about survival and family. A great addition to any collection, but not one I would suggest watching with your young kids due to some obvious reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n

This story follows a young girl named Lora and her group of friends as they begin to grow up into teenagers. From days spent playing \u2018make believe adventures\u2019 and using their imagination to create new games, slowly Lora\u2019s friend circle begins to dwindle as they each become more interested in make up, video games and finding romance. Lora on the other hand has no interest in any of these topics yet and prefers the simple things in life, like just messing around in the outdoors. Whilst reading a book on the supernatural, Lora decides to hold a s\u00e9ance tea party in her attic. Little did she realise that her childhood imaginary friend Alexa would reappear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alexa is infact a wandering ghost of a young girl that used to live in the town decades ago. As the two girls rekindle their lost friendship, they each start helping one another accept life's challenges. This is a very charming coming of age story, perfect for those aged ten and above who are starting to shy away from playing with traditional toys and games.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is in fact the first story I have ever read by Reimena Yee and it really was delightful. With a plot that can almost instantly connect with the majority of readers, it also has the magic to bring up old memories for the older readers like myself of when they were at a similar age and going through the same challenges. This story is even more relevant in todays' society as it seems as though todays' generation of kids are getting interested in video games and pop culture at a much younger age than before. So when I first thought that this story would be ideal for those aged 12 and above, in reality we could be looking more at the 10 years old age bracket.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is also the perfect time of year to get into a good book or series, as the winter season begins to creep in and the evenings get darker a lot earlier now. I have always enjoyed the coming of age genre of books, each of them usually has their own take on that stressful time between wanting to stay a kid forever but at the same time, wanting to be more adult. This is perhaps the first book I've read that actually involves a ghost, Alexa who helps our protagonist Lora to better understand her feelings and with just a bit of extra support is able to gather the courage to go out and try new things.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is also a good book to perhaps read alongside your child as it does touch on a number of important subjects, like bullying, peer pressure and feeling as though they are being left behind by their friends. It is one of those stories that is there to help you create an environment for your child to be comfortable to talk openly about issues such as these.<\/span><\/p>\n

This book was entirely created by Reimena Yee, a very talented illustrator, writer and designer originally from Kuala Lumpur but now resides in Melbourne, Australia. Not all is as it seems and it\u2019s not long before Colin is on the run.. Pixie\u2019s dad, Dermot (Colm Meaney) smells trouble and soon he and Pixie\u2019s brother are on Colin\u2019s trail. Pixie seems to attract trouble wherever she goes and two of the local boys end up helping her with a problem which results in them having to go on the run from some very very bad people..<\/span>\r\n\r\nWe\u2019ve all been desperate for a great Irish movie to hit cinemas since earlier this year and \u2018Pixie\u2019 is the one you\u2019ve been waiting for. Cast-wise, it\u2019s always fantastic to see Dylan Moran on the big screen and in this role, he\u2019s the total opposite to the comedic messer that we all know and love. The same could be said for Pat Shortt who is in the movie for all of five minutes. You know with a cast like this, that you\u2019re going to get your money\u2019s worth. There\u2019s even Alec Baldwin as a dodgy but violent priest with an even dodgier Irish accent.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nA fantastic cast, stunning Irish scenery and a brilliant story from start to finish makes this one to justify a trip to your local cinema. Starting off slowly, it\u2019s not long before the action builds to a crazy chase of cat and mice and the shoot out at the end alone will make your entire viewing worthwhile. One of my favourite movies so far this year. A young twenty-something woman named Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood) and her parents, Robert and Theresa are drifters.. scamming and concocting various schemes and ploys to get money. Living in a rented office, they spend their days working on new plans. The parents see nothing wrong with the way they live and also the way they use their daughter to help them. They have trained her to sneak into the post office to steal other peoples\u2019 mail and then claim anything that is of value. One day, Old Dolio manages to cook up a scam which initially involves the family flying to New York. While in NYC they happen upon a young woman named Melanie, who tries to convince them that she should join their enterprise and help them out. She tries to endear herself to the couple and they take her into their confidence. Meanwhile Old Dolio, socially awkward as she is, is slowly coming to the conclusion that there must be more to life than this...<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Possibly one of the strangest movies that I\u2019ve seen in a long while, \u2018Kajillionaire<\/em>\u2019 is basically the story of a dysfunctional family\/trio, using whatever means necessary to scrape through their daily existence. Even though the calibre of actors in the main roles; Debra Winger (Shadow Lands, Terms of Endearment), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water, Step Brothers) and Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld, Thirteen) is very high, it does feel a little bit rambly in places and you find yourself constantly wondering where the story is going to go. Evan Rachel Wood in particular is pretty much unrecognisable from the many roles we\u2019ve seen her in in the recent past, which does stand to her talent as an actress.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

<\/p>\r\n

I\u2019m not entirely sure what kind of audience would enjoy watching \u2018Kajillionaire<\/em>\u2019, though I\u2019d say that it is possibly an indie movie lover\u2019s dream. A much needed piece of escapism in these troubled times, give \u2018Kajillionaire<\/em>\u2019 a watch and make up your own mind.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What began as a story of immense loss and sadness, a complete life unheavful and total uncertainty of what tomorrow will bring - was instead turned into quite an uplifting read. As we meet Effie and her two Aunts, as they meet through unfortunate circumstances and are instantly put into a new family dynamic. Where the resident senior citizen witches are enjoying their routine life, they are overnight made into guardians for a young girl that is only roughly related to them. We begin to understand both sides of the story, as we see the situation from both viewpoints. Effie begins to deal with her loss, the challenges that await her in both a new home, school and environment. Thankfully, there are children her age that take a shine to her and almost instantly they become friends. As they all share the same interests, its not long before what was once a quiet house is soon filled with laughter again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the initial secret has been exposed, there are a number of other surprises waiting for Effie in her new home. From a popstar in her kitchen, to the dedication and science behind creating new potions and even some magical talent that has made it down through generations of her family tree. This story not only tackles some sad subjects such as loss, but also the anxiety of having to adjust to a new life without any familiarities. It\u2019s a book well worth spending your time reading, with beautiful illustrations and great storytelling. I doubt it will be the last we hear of Effie\u2019s character, as I hope to see a second book joining this series next year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The story and illustrations were created by Sophie Escabasse, a French author and illustrator living in Montreal. She has done illustrations for many books in her career, including Florence Parry Heide and Roxanne Heide Pierce\u2019s Spotlight Club Mysteries series (Albert Whitman); and the Freestyler Funnies series by Tom Easton (Hachette UK). This book, \u201cWitches of Brooklyn\u201d appears to be her first solo debut and I am sure it will be a success.<\/span><\/p>\n

Assassin's Creed has a long legacy of delivering open-world action RPGs and Valhalla continues this well-trodden path.<\/span>\r\n\r\nYou take the reins of Eivor, the central character in this game and his journey of being a Viking in Norway in the 9th century. From the start, you get a background to Eivor's upbringing, his values and ideals. All these things will shape how you play the game and the choices you make. The game is a mix of wonderful huge open environments with towns, villages and cities dotted around the map. A mix of puzzles, combat and exploring the countryside and waterways too. Longships and boats are used as transport between islands. The game uses this to enhance your movement from place to place as well as horseback too. As with any Assassin's Creed games, there is an element of stealth too which is obligatory in certain parts of the story. However, for large periods of the game, it's up to you how you approach the world. The storyline incorporates the nomadic nature of the Vikings, their customs and beliefs.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe game is stunning, the environments, characters and all visual effects have the hallmark of an Assassin's game. In this action RPG, you roam the world completing the main quests and side quests to level up Eivor for bigger battles and wars that will come. I found plenty of variety in the gameplay, characters and stories. I liked that animus didn't feature as prevalent as previous outings. There was one time the game was interrupted to the modern-day, it did break the illusion of being in 9th century Norway. While I get the idea of the animus and the sci-fi elements of it plus to bring a cohesive narrative amongst the many stories, I preferred being in Eivor's world without the animus distractions. This is a minor gripe.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAction, fighting and combat elements are intuitive and impactful, the addition of special abilities means you can custom your fight style too. The game has a rich levelling up system that allows you to build your character as you see fit. Voice acting, cutscenes and dramatic interludes enhance Valhalla, I think the developers have managed to keep all the elements of the gameplay and story well balanced and addictive.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe Xbox Series X|S \/ PS5 supports a performance mode which adapts the resolution to keep the game running at 60FPS. Similarly, for these consoles, there is a quality mode that maintains the best resolution while maintaining 30FPS. The game features ray-tracing and dynamic 4K. More games should adopt this, it makes the gamine experience more predictable.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAssassin's Creed Valhalla is fantastic: the game has managed to mix RPG gaming elements, action gameplay, huge environments, stunning visuals, levelling up system, storytelling elements and puzzles into a cohesive game where it all fits together. Side missions and main missions all make sense. There is a wonderful cadence to the game, you become immersed in the world of the Vikings. I found it super-addictive and found myself coming back to either finish side quests or the main missions. I have to say it's one of my favourite games of the year.
