Curse of the Dead Gods is a skill-based roguelike that is set in a temple dungeon. You navigate through a maze of levels, a host of nasty creatures and ultimately a boss in each temple. The game mechanics centre around a mix of using melee, ranged attacks, parrying and dodging. The critical element in terms of the gameplay is the difficulty level, precision is required throughout and using all the core game mechanics is the only way to survive to progress through the game. If the brutal nature of the difficulty setting isn't challenging enough, your character can become cursed which makes for an even tougher challenge. The difficulty setting may put players off but the rich variety of gameplay, playstyles and environments are superb. It should be noted that you will play for many hours to get the most of this game, this isn't a straight pick up and play, you will die a lot before you make any meaningful progress. The learning curve is fairly steep.

The whole game is illustrated using a dark cartoon style. The environments and characters have an amazing level of detail, the temple dungeon theme ties in the levels, characters, demons and all the gameplay as well. The levels themself are darkly lit which are illuminated by a torch you carry or fires that can be set. Levels contain traps, treasure and a host of evil creatures lurking around each corner. The temples are immersive and the mechanics and joy of killing the creatures make you come back for more. The deeper you progress through each dungeon, the wider variety of levels that you will uncover and different challenges.

On March 11th, 2011 a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred just off the coast of Japan, which triggered powerful tsunami waves that decimated many coastal towns and cities. Among them was the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear power plants. Within an hour of the 6 minute long earthquake, they had lost all electricity to power their necessary cooling systems for the reactors. This film reenacts the events of those faithful hours following the earthquake, as those that worked in the powerplant gave their all to protect Japan and her citizens from an event that would rival the effects of Chernobyl. Starring Ken Watanabe as the Plant Manager Yoshida, directed by Setsuró Wakamatsu (Whiteout) and based off of the jaw-dropping book by Ryusho Kadota (On The Brink: The Inside Story of Fukushima Daiichi) that depicts the harrowing events of that dark day ten years ago.

We are now just days away from the 10th anniversary of the devastating Tóhoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck Japan on the 11th March 2011. These events also led to the nuclear disaster that happened at the Fukushima Daiichi power plants. Where several explosions, nuclear meltdowns and pressure-release venting occurred, which led to the radioactive contamination of the entire town. I remember when the news hit my TV screen that day, I was glued to every update about the country I had longed for so many years to visit. I was checking twitter accounts for manga artists and YouTubers that I had been following for years, to thankfully learn that they were all safe. This event shook the world, as I for one never thought there was going to be another event similar to what happened in Chernobyl in the 80’s. Japan had experienced one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history, which triggered tsunami’s much larger than predicted. The damage done was harrowing to watch, and that was all before the nuclear meltdowns in Fukushima Daiichi occured.

"fukushima50_1"

This film depicts the chaos, danger and immense pressure the power plant workers went through in order to prevent a full on nuclear meltdown in all their reactors. If that had occurred, much of Japan would be contaminated, on a scale much larger than what happened in Chernobyl. The actors skillfully depicted the valiant efforts of the engineers, grounds crew and the cooperative workers that were brought in for support. Ken Watanabe played the Plant Manager, who was the one responsible for representing the workers of the powerplant. Having fought with the government officials along the way, trying to make them see sense. This film was an incredible watch from start to finish, although there were several hiccups with playing it on the Altitude player. As the stream kept breaking every half hour, resulting in it playing once again from the start and trying to find where I had left off. All the same, this is definitely a film worth watching. It is also highly rewatchable, as similarly over the last couple of months I have also found myself wanting to go back and rewatch the Chernobyl series that came out in 2019.

Ken Watanabe gave an incredible performance in this film, from start to finish. However he didn’t heavily outshine the rest of the cast. His co-star Kóichi Sató, who played Toshio Izaki the leading engineer in Units 1 & 2, gave an unbelievable performance. As his character took the harsh responsibility of creating suicide squads, which included several volunteers going out in pairs to manually go into the reactors to begin the venting process. This film deserves immense recognition, Golden Globes, Oscars, etc. But ultimately, this film will hopefully have a positive effect on raising awareness for those that were affected by this tragedy. And with the 10th anniversary now on our doorsteps, it has also been announced that the route of the Olympic Torch relay will also include Fukushima, as the 2020/21 Olympics has been named as the ‘Reconstruction Olympics’. Which symbolises a new start for Fukushima, which is still in the process of rebuilding and decontaminating the soil & water around the powerplants.

Hades is the wonderful imagined rogue-like dungeon crawler. The game manages to delicately balance the rouge-like game with a story underneath, it's tough and difficult but each play-through allows you to power up to progress a little further each time. Every subsequent run is a little easier. This is set in the wonderfully reimagined Underworld with a host of characters from Greek mythology and you play as Zagreus and his journey to escape.

The game centres on Zagreus (son of Hades) and his journey out of the Underworld. You start with a weapon that has a normal and a special attack, you can unlock more weapons as you progress through the game. You can cast a gem too that can inflict damage. These are your primary forms of attack. You have a dash/dodge mechanic too. As you progress through the game you gain power-ups (boons), these last for several dungeons, until you die or until you replace them. These power-ups are vital to surviving each dungeon and ultimately escaping. The combination of your initial weapon of choice and the power-ups define your playstyle through that run and each run is different due to the random nature of power-ups. That's the game in a nutshell in a simplistic form.

"hades1"

The developers have kept the gameplay super simple but allowed for an amazing array of character build types from melee, ranged or somewhere in between. Then the power-up mechanism has a huge array of choice and combinations too. As with any rogue-like, you will die a lot. I found the numerous character playstyles that varied so much through each run which gave the game longevity and its novelty factor. There wasn't a point in the game after 30 hours of game time that I felt bored, it just was engrossing and engaging, it was tons of fun. It was so much fun and difficult too.

"hades2"

Hades is primarily a cartoon(y) art style, the Underworld has several stages that are themed too. Each stage has its nuances and level design features that can be used to your advantage. There is a huge cast of characters of Greek Gods from Hermes to Athena to Ares to name a few, each with their personality and voice-over too. The voice-overs and acting are superb which adds a whole another dimension to the gameplay and storytelling elements. The characters help to paint the world around you and your place in it. Humour is used effectively too to enhance the storytelling aspects as well. The lighting, sound effects and level design are amazing. Hades combines an amazingly addictive rogue-like with a fantastic story and setting to boot. The choice of Greek Mythology is present with the costumes, weapon designs and every artefact at every level.

"hades3"

Hades achieves so much that many rogue-likes games want to accomplish and does it in an amazingly and thoroughly enjoyable way. The visuals are superb and every aspect is artistically rendered with a meticulous eye for detail. The use of Greek mythology sets the scene for the game as you battle your way out of the Underworld. The art style is lush, vibrant and dark amidst the background of the Underworld. It delivers an amazing story with fantastic voice acting. The story is intriguing and has the right amount of humour to enhance it even more. Every character looks stunning and the voice acting ties the story and gameplay together. The voice-overs are a masterstroke too, this helps elevate the storytelling. The game achieves a wonderful balance between being not forgiving but giving you enough bonus and power-ups for subsequent plays. You will die a lot but the game balance is fair and the more you play, the more persistent power up and perks you can use for the next run through. This is what a rogue-like should aim to achieve.

"hades4"

It's undoubtedly my favourite rough-like dungeon crawler but it elevates itself above just being a dungeon crawler in my opinion. It's amazing.

Curse of the Dead Gods is a skill-based roguelike that is set in a temple dungeon. You navigate through a maze of levels, a host of nasty creatures and ultimately a boss in each temple. The game is played from an isometric perspective and the emphasis is on mastering the simple controls but in an extremely challenging environment.

"curseofthedeadgods1"

Initially, you are set up with a primary melee weapon (sword) and a ranged weapon (pistol), as you battle through each dungeon you will gain relics, power-ups and the ability to offer sacrifices to the gods. Each creature you encounter has its own unique set of attacks and defensive skills that you need to overcome. The difficulty setting may put players off but the rich variety of gameplay, playstyles and environments are superb. It should be noted that you will play for many hours to get the most of this game, this isn't a straight pick up and play, you will die a lot before you make any meaningful progress. The learning curve is fairly steep.

"curseofthedeadgods2"

The whole game is illustrated using a dark cartoon style. The environments and characters have an amazing level of detail, the temple dungeon theme ties in the levels, characters, demons and all the gameplay as well. The levels themself are darkly lit which are illuminated by a torch you carry or fires that can be set. Levels contain traps, treasure and a host of evil creatures lurking around each corner. The temples are immersive and the mechanics and joy of killing the creatures make you come back for more. The deeper you progress through each dungeon, the wider variety of levels that you will uncover and different challenges.

"curseofthedeadgods3"

Curse of the Dead Gods is a superb roguelike that marries difficult challenging experiences into this temple themed world. The game mechanics are simple and intuitive but requires skill and patience to master. The ability to level up with either gold or a blood sacrifice is a neat touch that is complemented by the addition of curses as you progress through each stage. The level design and gameplay feel are superb, the game is tough and rewarding. Multiple types of melee and ranged weapons allow you to build a play style that suits you. The world is a dark temple with tons of creatures looking to get you, it's a truly immersive experience.

Hello and welcome back again everyone, to another SoKawaii Box unboxing. ( Which is still not sponsored !)

February’s theme was all about love and self care, instead of the traditional Valentine's Day celebrations in Japan where the girls give chocolates to the boys they fancy. We have products from San-X, Pokémon, Sumikkogurashi and Hello Kitty. We have a large plush bag, some hair accessories and a cookie mould. So let’s get started with the usual important bits of info!

SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 5 to 6 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts. https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

"sokawaiifebruary2021_1"

Our first item this month is a large plush hand bag from San-X. This adorable cream Korilakkuma shoulder bag is super soft, has a rather large inside pocket that will at least fit your phone and purse, as well as actually being a quick pillow if need be. I would have preferred a Rilakkuma bag instead, as this version is sure to get marks on it very quickly if using it out & about. However it is perfect for those that enjoy dressing up as lolithas’ for conventions and such, otherwise it will be nice to display it at home. The only issue is that we have already gotten plenty of bags in various sizes in the last number of months, and it’s becoming a bit repetitive. I for one, which there was an option given to subscribers who may want to option out a bag for a plush or ReMent figure as an alternative.

"sokawaiifebruary2021_2"

"sokawaiifebruary_2021_3"

Our Second item is from Pokémon, with this blush pink Pikachu hair brush from the “Girly Collection”. Now I have REALLY long hair, so I need a good hairbrush to tackle it every day. Now I haven’t started using it yet, but this cute design is well worth adding into my routine. It’s pretty sturdy and is actually much larger than what I was expecting, this could easily have been in and around 12 to 15euro if you were to buy that in the Pokémon store I say. It also never hurts to have a second hairbrush around!

"sokawaiifebruary2021_4"

"sokawaiifebruary_2021_5"

Moving on to our third item, we have a pair of Hello Kitty hair ties. Now these remind me of the bobble hair ties I used to have as a kid, that if you were unlucky, they would whack you in the head when you were putting them on. They felt like you got hit with a rock, and they didn't just hit you once! Although they were adorable, they were a b**** to get on! Also kind of wondering, what age demographic is SoKawaii aiming for really? As I imagine most of the subscribers have to be between 16 and 30, and even then I doubt many of them will be wearing their hair in pigtails with these hair ties. They are cute all the same, but are definitely aimed at little girls.

Our fourth item is a Sumikko Gurashi headband. Made of towel like material, this is actually going to be pretty handy for people that are doing their skin care routine and wish to keep their bangs off of their face. I imagine it would also be handy to have on right after you have a shower too. This item was available in two designs: Shirokuma or Neko.

"sokawaiifebruary_2021_6"

Our fifth and final item for this box, is a Gudetama Cookie Mould. This is probably the closest we are going to get this month to an actual Valentines day gift. This baking mould is a two pack cookie cutter featuring the laziest egg mascot of all time - Gudetama. What would have been a nice touch, would have been an actual recipe we could use these for!

So this month’s box has been a bit of a mixed bag really. With yet another large bag to add to the collection, a pair of hair ties that could cause a concussion, and even a pair of cookie moulds that are just going to remind me of breakfast. For those, this months’ box has been a gold mine. For myself, it wasn’t really worth it as the majority of the items are really no use to me in my life. But I am sure to find a good home for them amongst friends and family. Now let’s get on to the all important information, for how YOU can begin your own subscription as well as a special discount code just for you guys.

"sokawaiifebruary_2021_7"

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. At the moment, SoKawaii are shipping their boxes via DHL as Japan Post is still not allowing worldwide postage from Japan. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 Month – $35.00 (€29.00mo roughly)3 Months – $33.50 (€28.00mo roughly)

6 Months – $32.00 (€26.50mo roughly)

12 Months – $31.50 (€26.00mo roughly)

Better yet, here is a 10% discount code that you can use on your first box!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you liked everything you saw in this review of February’s box, rest assured that the items are different every month, for the most part. Each box has 5 to 6 items included and a few of them will be revealed online through SoKawaiis’ social media as the weeks go by. March’s box theme is “Super Kawaii Squad”, which will feature goods from Sanrio, San-X and Sailor Moon, with a few of the products included already announced across their social media.

https://www.sokawaii.com/

Monster Energy Supercross 4 is the latest outing and the official video game for Supercross. This Supercross game is a realistic fast-paced and mayhem filled motorbike game that is full of ups and downs with the occasional spill too. It has been brought beautifully to the consoles and Windows platform.

I'm not a huge fan of Supercross and I don't understand the intricacies of the sport but I love realistic driving simulators. Supercross 4 takes the motorcycle to indoor race tracks with life-like graphics and fantastic gameplay. It must be noted that even if you aren't clued into Supercross there are lots here for the casual observer of Supercross. If you are aware of Supercross, the game has licences and all the current riders. I wouldn't dodge this game due to a lack of knowledge of Supercross.

"monsterenergysupercross4_1"

The game itself is an indoor motorbike simulator that takes place across a series of tracks. There are several types of gameplay from career mode, single-player mode and time attack. The career mode is geared towards players who want to build up a rider from scratch and compete in championships. The single-player in general is geared towards gamers who want to have quicker races in either a standalone format or in a championship format. Whichever format you choose, the game is wonderfully rendered and there are tons of tracks and gameplay mechanics to master.

"monsterenergysupercross4_2"

The gameplay is a motorbike simulator geared towards the indoor Supercross tracks which involve lots of jumps and sharp turns. Controls and the movement of the riders and their vehicles have an immersive feel, the tracks are varied with each requiring a different race line and approach. Some tracks show the spectacular height riders can reach while racing it. The addition of a replay game mechanic is useful when you are learning the ropes, the ability to replay three sections within a race reduces the difficulty. While the controls are simple and intuitive, the game will take some time to master and become a component racer. You will encounter other riders and spills as you get to grips with the game. The environments and tracks provide the variety required to keep your attention. As this is a Supercross game, the majority of tracks are indoors and they can look similar at times but the action-packed gameplay more than offsets this.

"monsterenergysupercross4_3"

The game does look superb, it feels and plays smoothly too. There is a learning curve in terms of figuring out controls, race lines, jumps and tracks. There is a rich career mode where you can create your character and pit your wits against the best racers in the world. There are also multiplayer options which I only scratched the surface of but a nice inclusion. The gameplay is solid but challenging and there are numerous motorbikes, tweaks and game modes to keep you occupied. I like the ability to jump into an event with the qualification process and play against 21 other riders. If you want to jump in and play, you can do that or you can play the game as it would be in real life through the career mode for instance. It's a high adrenaline and action-packed Supercross simulator that is fun to play but difficult to master. If you are a fan of racing games this is well worth a spin.

Samurai Shodown is a reboot of the 1993 SNK beat 'em up classic. This outing is the updated version using the Unreal Engine and bringing the game to current generation consoles.

"samuraishodown1"

If you have played the original or any incarnation since the original, you will be well accustomed to the original set of characters and the gameplay. It has that unique SNK beat 'em up style. Three new additional characters added to the roster. For the newcomers, this is a classic 1 versus 1 beat 'em up. You pit your skills against a singular for multiple rounds. It is a brutal action-filled game with lots of sword action. This SNK classic has the addition of weapons which made it stand out when it was originally released. Each character possesses an array of special moves that can take some time to perfect.

"samuraishodown2"

There is a training mode where you can hone your skills before you battle for real. The staple of a versus mode is available for quick local play (against CPU players or friends). The main game has a story mode where you battle through rounds of opponents to face the final boss at the end while jet setting from country to country to find other foes to beat. While the story mode follows a generic well-trodden path of single-player beat em up story modes it's fun in fairness, I usually play this mode first.

An online mode for playing anyone from around the world adds a huge replay value to the game. There is a battle mode where you try to beat as many players in a row. The game has a unique AI system that will learn the player's moves and allows for this AI to be created as "Ghost characters" that can be shared to play against too. There is in the inclusion of gore and finishing moves which can be turned off for those not a fan of bloody violence, think Mortal Kombat gore but without the over the top finishing moves. The game sees the return of 13 classic characters and the addition of 3 new characters that have enough diverse fighting styles to keep the hardened beat em up fan happy. Additional characters are available via Season passes too.

"samuraishowdown3"

The Series X version runs at a smooth 120 FPS. Owners of the previous-gen version can play on the Series X|S without any additional costs via Smart Delivery, any purchased DLCs is also transferable.

Samurai Showdown has that unique SNK fighting gameplay style brought to modern consoles. The superb art style combined with 120 FPS brings a lush gaming experience. A wide variety of characters with the new AI system and online play will mean this game is a must-buy for beat em up fans.

Kumiko never desired to live the rest of her life in an ‘assisted living home’. Constantly surrounded by the same old people, old news and constant badgering from nurses. So one night, she packs up her belongings and leaves the ‘home’ for good - without telling her daughters! Having found a small apartment to call her own, she spends her days exactly how she pleases - by decorating her new home by bringing life into the discarded furniture left on the street and taking her daily swim at a local pool. Free to make her own choices and eat whatever she likes. However there is a dark presence that has been following Kumiko around ever since she left the old folks home. Death’s shadow has come knocking on her door - but how long can Kumiko go without answering it?!

I absolutely adore this book! Kumiko is a sweet, little old lady who also has a devious streak in her. Having found her independence again and is now out from under the thumb of her three ‘darling’ daughters, Kumiko has gotten a second chance of life. Although she has daily reminders of how old she is now, with a failing body and weak pelvic muscles. The littlest laugh can sometimes be disastrous for this old age pensioner. However this lady still has her wits about her and is definitely as sharp as they come. All you have to do is see how she deals with a shop assistant when trying to haggle for a new vacuum. She certainly is a force to be reckoned with, and one I highly admire. It isn’t often we see characters of her age group being represented as lead characters, the only one I seem to be able to recall in recent years that had a huge success, has been the old man Carl in the animated film Up from Pixar.

"shadowlife1"

There is also another twist to this story, as an old flame comes back into Kumiko’s life. What I haven’t mentioned yet, is that Kumiko is 76 year old bi-sexual widow. Much to the surprise of her adult daughters, who believed that their late father was Kumiko’s sole relationship. Now isn’t that a twist! This quick witted old woman has escaped death many times, but he’s back to collect! What appears on the outside to others, is that Kumiko is going senile and can’t be trusted to live on her own any longer. However from Kumiko’s point of view, she has trapped the Grim Reaper in her hoover by securing it with a salt rock lamp.

"shadowlife2"

This book has been full of laughs, down-to-earth lessons about life, enjoying it even though you may be a part of the elderly demographic. It instills a lesson about respect for the older generations that came before us, that perhaps they too still have their witty moments. They have lived so long, that they have certainly picked up a trick or two that will come in handy when it comes to out maneuvering ‘death’ if he comes knocking. It’s stories like these that begin to open your eyes a bit more to those around you, that perhaps you thought were a bit too ‘senile’ to interact with. I would love to see more books like this being released by Hiromi Goto, as they really do leave a memorable impact on the reader.

Pumpkin Jack is a 3D platformer set in a spooky mystical world with a fantastic cartoony vibe. This is an epic adventure through a hellish world where you play as Jack, the mythical Pumpkin Lord going through multiple levels. Pumpkin Jack is reminiscent of many fantastic 3D platformers, you take control of this hellish Jack character as he battles for good to overcome evil. I know the plot is nothing new but the game has a few gems that make it sound out from most 3D platformers.

"pumpkinjack1"

The designers and developers have created a fantastic spooky world, they have taken the spooky and evil theme and ran with it. The levels are well crafted with a varying degree of difficulty, each level introduces new mechanics that make each new area have a novelty. You will be greeted with a ton of puzzles too throughout each level. Your character can jump, melee and shot bad guys. There are unique sections in each game that break the monotony of just having a standard 3D platformer or problem-solving. The levels and characters are well rendered and the graphics are superb, they have fine-tuned the spooky cartoony feels. A fantastic musical score and theme underpin all the action, the voice acting is superb. The music adds so much to the game and it makes all the elements of the game come together. The boss encounters are fantastic and are probably my favourite parts of the game, the bosses are wonderfully rendered and quite challenging. They add another break from the standard 3D platformer format.

"pumpkinjack2"

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how addictive the game was, the control system is straightforward and easy to pick up and play. Once I spent a couple of hours getting used to game mechanics, I was hooked. The levels offer quite a varied gaming experience, action, puzzles and some aspects that felt like being on a rollercoaster! The game offers varied levels as well, each level has its unique game mechanic and new features. The level of story tension and build-up is done well, the storytelling aids the pace of the game and each level climaxes with a huge boss fight. Pumpkin Jack reminds me of many great 3D platformers but has its twists and humour. This is a fantastic platformer.

However it is perfect for those that enjoy dressing up as lolithas’ for conventions and such, otherwise it will be nice to display it at home. The only issue is that we have already gotten plenty of bags in various sizes in the last number of months, and it’s becoming a bit repetitive.

Hello everyone! Hope you are all keeping well, I have a massive haul to talk about today as last week I received 9 months worth of my Nihon Box subscriptions all of a sudden on my doorstep!

As you guys are aware, I normally review the SoKawaii box each month. However that isn’t the only subscription service I’m with. Back in March 2020 I did a review of my very first Nihon Box, sadly when the pandemic started my boxes were stuck in their warehouse in Japan due to limited postal options. Almost a year has passed since my last box, when all of a sudden I came home one day to find two big FedEx boxes in my sitting room. The lovely people over at Nihon Box must have decided to rebox everyone's orders that they had been waiting on for so long and send them first class! So that way their warehouse would be empty of all back orders from 2020. To make it even more amazing, they had replaced any out of date food items with replacement ones. Such attention to detail and top class warehouse operatives too, as everything was packed with care. Not a single item was damaged, and there were a number of breakable items inside! I have to say, that team deserves more than just a round of applause!

I’ve known about this service for quite some time now, as I’ve seen several unboxing videos from Doug D’Marco on YouTube. Check out his channel if you can, he reviews several different subscription boxes and gives good, honest reviews. (https://www.youtube.com/user/Angelraider78)

Much like SoKawaii, Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to for what I find a very affordable price each month.

Like SoKawaii, the more months you pay upfront the cheaper the price for individual boxes will be. https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

3 Months is a single payment of €86.97, making each box €28.99, plus shipping costs.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

"nihonboxapril2020_1"

So let’s move on to the types of items you could get in your box - or when 9 months of them just show up on your doorstep! So I have split the items up into different categories. So up first, I have the shirts that arrived. Back last October, Nihon Box got into the spooky vibe and included some Death Note merch - including this very cool looking T-shirt. Everything is official merch, so you can imagine the excitement seeing something like this included. The sizes are pretty accurate, well made and a nice vibrant print as well. Then we have the Naruto shirt that came in May’s box. Followed by the ever popular Kimetsu no Yaiba Demon Slayer shirt that was included in August’ box. Nihon Box tends to switch it up every couple of months as to when they include shirts.

"nihonboxapril2020_2"

Next up is the plushie section of the review. So over the course of 9 months, they included plushies from various popular animes in just 6 of those months. We have both large, medium and small plushies, from classic shows including Death Note, DragonBall Z and Fairy Tail. As well as more recent shows, including Fire Force, The Promised Neverland and That Time I Was Reincarnated As A Slime. It was only in May’s box, was there a possibility of getting either a Majin Buu or a Goku Daruma shaped plush. The rest of the character plushies were main cast or lead characters from their respective shows. For me, the Rimuru slime plush was the crowning jewel from this plush haul.

"nihonboxapril2020_3"

Next up we have the everyday items, which include items for your lunch, some chopsticks and that all important toothbrush for your oral care. So we got a City Hunter lunch box, from a rather old anime from the late 80s and early 90s. Followed by a GTO Great Teacher Onizuka tumbler, from another classic anime from the year 2000. We also got two sets of chopsticks, from just a classic red pair with rabbits decorating the handles and a pair of cute Pikachu ones that come with their own carry case. This item was available in two different designs back last November, the other design was the classic Pokéball print. April’s box included a large Cardcaptor Sakura melamine spoon, the perfect size to eat your ramen with. May’s box held a Pokémon kozara plate, which is meant for more decoration than use. It’s roughly the size of your palm and features both Pikachu and Wingull on a traditional wave shaped art pattern. And lastly, we have a single My Neighbour Totoro bamboo toothbrush.

"nihonboxapril2020_4"

This image is more of the miscellaneous items that were included. I have to admit, I do really love this Gengar face cloth that was included in October's box. Great quality, fully licensed and straight from the Pokémon store! We also received two laminated posters, from two of the most popular and iconic animes - Naruto & Bleach. We even received a small acrylic card from DragonBall, with 50 character designs available. It will take you quite some time to collect them all if you’re a massive fan. They can pop out from the card and stand freely, well detailed and just a nice small item to have on your shelf. Every few months, if you have a continuous subscription, the lovely people over at Nihon Box throw in the odd loyalty bonus item. Mine included a Kirby pen, a Re: Zero blindbox keychain and a Mario Shell key cover.

"nihonboxapril2020_5"

This is turning into a super long review! The next couple of items come from numerous shows and games from a number of genres. First up we have a frisbee with Kirby's glorious face printed on the front, for all the summer fun we all hope to have this year. We also have a One Piece clear file, from the Wano Kuni arc of the show when they were all dressed as samurai. We also have a Shonen Jump Vinyl case, which you could have gotten in three designs including Dragon Ball, One Piece and Naruro. It could also be used as a pencil case, or even a mask case during this pandemic. Moving on we got a Naruto Shippuden Tower Stand, which is quite handy to store all your pens and pencils in so they are always at the ready. I also got a pair of Dragon Ball Tabi socks, which are the iconic socks from Japan you always see when they wear sandals. It’s a sock that just separates your big toe for the rest of them. Quite comfy when you get used to the feeling. Something you don’t see very often included in subscription boxes, is Kingdom Hearts merch. Of which we got a can badge mystery box pin in July's box, with 13 to collect. I also got another Demon Slayer bull clip plush, from the same collection and even the same character that I received in a past SoKawaii box. Our Pokémon item was a coaster/strap, which featured one of 6 first generation Pokémon in a pixel art design. Of which I actually got Mew! The last item in this picture was a Kokoro Basket mascot keychain.

"nihonboxapril2020_6"

Now we are on to the food items! Now there have been a number of substitutions due to expired dates on original packets, so not every item I received was intended. I have tried quite a few of these items since, some have been well a bit hit and miss. The Animal Crossing chocolate egg had melted at some point over storage and travel, so it was very marbled by the time it got to me. The chocolate was very disappointing, but the figure was rather cute. It’s Japan’s version of a Kinder Egg really, but with lower quality chocolate. The Sakura flavoured green tea came with no instructions as to how to prepare it and since arriving, it has actually gone out of date. If they included a simple english translation for how to prepare it, it would have been very useful. I’ve yet to try the Pokémon snacks, all I know is that they are supposed to be a chocolate snack. I have also yet to try the big bag of Matcha Okoshi, which are green tea flavoured puffed rice cakes.

The substitutes so far have been really delicious, from the mini sugar coated sponge bites - which were quite dry but would be great in a little desert with some cream and jam. The soybean flour and cane sugar sticks had an interesting flavour and texture but were very pleasant to snack on. Ultimately it was the matcha mochi choco that caught my attention. With a layer of green tea chocolate, that encased a mochi inside all in a small bite. It wasn't overpowering in any way and was the type of treat that made you consume it over time and not in one sitting. Kind of perfect for sharing really.

‘Age is just a number after all.
