We are delighted to be joined by the writer Mark Sable this week. Mark is the writer of many comics including Graveyard of Empires, Grounded, War on Terror and Miskatonic just to name a few. Mark is working on a new project called Chaotic Neutral and we are delighted that we can about it with him today.

Hi Mark, we are so delighted to have you here with us today. We have been fans of your writing since Graveyard of Empires. We are soexcited to chat with you.

I’m delighted to be here! And thank you for the kind words about Graveyard of Empires, that’s a book I’m proud of and it means a lot.

We understand that you are working with Chris Anderson on a new project called Chaotic Neutral; can you tell us all about Chaotic Neutral?

CHAOTIC NEUTRAL is a 48 page comic and RPG adventure rolled into one. Inspired by old school role playing games like D&D, the goal is to capture the weird, wonderful and dangerous fantasy RPGs from the 80s in comic book form. And then let readers become players and interact with the world of the book.

"chaoticneutral2"

Can you tell us about the origins of Chaotic Neutral?

I’ve collected role playing game books for almost as long as I’ve collected comics. I say “collected” because I was extremely shy as a kid, and had a hard time working up the courage to get a group together. So I’d study rulebooks and modules like they were the Talmud, roll up characters and craft these imaginary adventures…but never shared them with anything else.

Flash forward to 2014, when the Fifth Edition of D&D came out. I finally had enough self-confidence to first play, and then run games with strangers and friends. That was a life changing experience – to this day I run a weekly D&D game, and the camaraderie helped get me through the pandemic.

But something felt like it was missing from modern day RPGs. The books were more polished, but also…safer. Old school RPGs had painted covers, but inside was this amazing black and white art. Sometimes it was amateurish, but it was often edgy – with demons and devils – and always weird. It made you feel like anything was possible.

I learned that of fantasy had been watered down as a result of the so-called “Satanic Panic of the 80s”. Religious groups tried to convince parents that games like D&D could corrupt kids souls, and gaming companies folded much like comic companies did with the Comic Code in the 50s.

CHAOTIC NEUTRAL aims to correct that. Our tag line is “They said fantasy roleplaying games were dangerous and they were wrong. But now? Maybe they were right to be afraid!” We’re trying to bring back that edge, and imagine what a comic that would truly scare those fear mongers would be like.

At the same time, it’s not edge for edge’s sake or shock value. While taking inspiration from the old school, this is a book that’s diverse, inclusive and welcoming to the new batch of players that shows like Stranger Things and Critical Role have brought into this wonderful hobby.

Chris Anderson is the perfect artist and co-creator for this book. His work conjures up the weird nature of old school artists like Erol Otus, Dave Trampier and Bill Willingham (yes, the man known best for writing Fables used to do rad drawings for D&D)…but he brings a modern sense of whimsy that helps balance out the darkness and make it accessible for everyone.

"chaoticneutral3"

Ryan Browne is also working on Chaotic Neutral; how did this collaboration come about?

Part of the propaganda of the Satanic Panic were these so-called “Chick Tracts”, pamphlet sized comic-books like “Dark Dungeons” by the late Jack Chick that depicted kids who dabbled in D&D meeting grisly ends. While the main story is told seriously, I wanted to satirize Chick’s work to add to the feeling that CHAOTIC NEUTRAL was an artifact of the 80s. I’m lucky enough to be friends with Ryan, who does humor better than anyone in comics, and it seemed like a the only person who could pull that off.

We understand that Chaotic Neutral will also have trading cards; what can you tell us about these trading cards?

In the early 80s, D&D had these monster trading cards with stats on one side and old school art on the other. We decided to do a modern spin on that by enlisting 9 superstar artists to illustrate some of the classic and original monsters in Issue one of CHAOTIC NEUTRAL. We’ve been lucky enough to enlist Max Dunbar (Dungeons & Dragons), Jeremy Haun (Haunthology), Maan House (Godkillers), Jeff Johnson (Boondocks), Tom Neely (The Humans), Dan Panosian (Slots), Jim Rugg (Mtsryr: Octobriana 1976), Tim Seeley (Money Shot) and Kyle Strahm (Spread) in creating them. They are a true murderers row of talent.

"chaoticneutral4"

As a creator, does the crowdfunding model and dealing directly with the public make the project more special for you rather than using a traditional publishing model?

I work equally as hard on all my comics, but there is something special about the process of crowdfunding. One of the things I’ve always loved about comics is the proximity of fans to creators. I love film, but I could never go up to a convention and meet Martin Scorsese. Comics was welcoming to me as a fan, and I love the opportunity to establish those connections to readers as a creator.

Do you have a favourite Kickstarter reward?

There are some cool stretch goals that haven’t been revealed yet, but my favorite reward connects back to your question about the special bond with the public Kickstarter can create. For a select few backers, I’ve offered to run the adventure in CHAOTIC NEUTRAL live (over Zoom) as Dungeon Master. I’m hoping that will be special for fans, and I personally can’t wait to challenge run them and their characters through the dangers that await inside.

"chaoticneutral5"

Any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

Just that I know there’s a lot of great comics to choose from, but Chris Anderson and I are offering a unique experience. Whether they are comics readers, role-players or both, we’ve crafted something special for them.

A big thank you to Mark for sitting and chatting with us, we would like to wish Mark and all of his team the best of luck with their Kickstarter.

Feel free to check out the campaign: Chaotic Neutral on Kickstarter.

So let me just sit back and recap on all the films, movies and more that I was fortunate enough to enjoy this year. Hopefully you lot will find something worth checking out from my thoughts of what I deemed an “Otaku 2020 Review”.

So I’m just gonna tip toe around the whole pandemic, bush-fire, Carole Baskin crap show that was 2020 and just dive right in to what I managed to do articles of this year.

Must Watch Film:

"zombieforsale"

‘Zombie For Sale’ is the first zom-rom-com to have emerged from Korea and the only one that comes to mind after the 2013 American film - ‘Warm Bodies’. This fantastic addition to the genre, reminds me of the comic style of ‘Shaun of the Dead’. Making it completely rewatchable and enjoyable time and time again. Released from Arrow Video on DVD and BluRay, you can also catch it over on Amazon Prime. Hopefully this film will make it to film festival screenings next year when the pandemic allows.

http://comicbuzz.com/zombie-for-sale-review/

"melancholic"

A special mention has to go to Third Window Films for their release of ‘Melancholic’. Another fantastic film, that follows the midnight executions that go on in a run of the mill Japanese bath house. I still have to write this review up, but its a film well worth mentioning and is available to buy now over on their website. http://thirdwindowfilms.com/distributed-films/

"becky"

If Asian film and subtitles just aren't your thing, then don’t fret as ‘Becky’ has you covered. This film puts Kevin James in a role I never would have imagined he’d play. Having just escaped from prison, Kevin plays a Neo-Nazi that is on the hunt for a key he hid in the foundations of a house years ago. How and why he did this, well I have no idea. But I do know - that the action was astounding! With a very resourceful and anger driven teenage girl lurking in the woods, its Kevin’s character that is in the most danger! Definitely a film for the action lover in your life. http://comicbuzz.com/becky-review/

Another film I have enjoyed myself this year is the follow up sequel to 2016’ Train To Busan - Peninsula. Another zombie action flick that held its own against its predecessor and had some superb driving sequences from his youngest co-stars. Although already out on DVD and BluRay from Studio Canal, I hope to catch this film next year in the Japanese Film Festival at my local cinema and I advise you all to do the same if you get the chance.

Check Out This Manga:

"demonslayerv1"

It’s the hit anime and manga series of 2020, which although it made its debut in Japan back in 2016. It has since caught the rest of the World by storm in the last 12 months. With the manga series just after ending, if you can’t wait for the final volume to be released - you can always download the Shonen Jump app onto your phone and read all the manga you want for just €1.99 a month! And that includes ALL of the old and latest chapters from Demon Slayer, Dragon Ball, Boruto, Jojo and more!

http://comicbuzz.com/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba-vol-1-review/

Another notable manga that I have enjoyed this year, has been The Promised Neverland (also available on the Shonen Jump app!). Which is another series that has since finished, so you can binge it now over on the app.

Notable Anime Releases:

"cop-craft-complete-series"

This series certainly caught me by surprise this year, Cop Craft is only a short 12 episode series but was jam packed with action from start to finish. It was a mix between Men In Black meets Lethal Weapon, certainly a show well worth introducing to those skeptical of anime. Definitely one worth mentioning to your co-workers to entice them over to the nerdy side. http://comicbuzz.com/cop-craft-the-complete-series-review/

"risingoftheshieldhero"

Next up is the isekai, ‘The Rising of the Shield Hero’ season one. Now this one was quite interesting in the fact that the hero in this show was brought into the world as one of four heroes. However due to only having a shield and no weapon, he was more or less cast to one side with zero help and left to level up on his own. Other mad shit happens along the way, he gathers an unusual party but also manages to do his bit to save people as best he can. I haven't enjoyed an isekai as much as this, since I watched Log Horizon. Well worth checking out both shows, as they each have a new season coming our way in the new year ! http://comicbuzz.com/the-rising-of-the-shield-hero-review/

"Miss

Next up is what I would class as a reverse isekai. Where the magical creature instead ventures into the ‘real world’ in search of peace. ‘Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid’ is just full of laughs, and also has an interesting take on the lead character. Although addressed as Miss and is indeed female, the way the character is portrayed you could easily change the genders. She acted much like I would imagine an adult Haruhi Fujioka from Ouran HighSchool Host Club would, so it looks like I have found my anime counterpart once again! There are also talks of a second season coming our way in 2021 for Miss Kobayashi, and there is plenty of manga available now in the franchise from Seven Seas Entertainment to keep us going until then. http://comicbuzz.com/miss-kobayashis-dragon-maid-the-complete-series-review/

"promisedneverland"

Okay I have two more anime releases well worth mentioning. Let’s begin with ‘The Promised Neverland’ from Anime Limited. This anime wasn’t long throwing you into the deep end when it comes to watching it. I got so hooked after Season One ended, that I got the Shonen Jump app and read all of the manga from start to finish. Now I will admit, Season Two next year is going to be very action packed! There is a lot to fit into the storyline, but it is just one of those shows where you can connect with the characters instantly as you both find out the dark truth about their world at the same time. Anime Limited have also done a wonderful job when it came to the packaging and cover arts. http://comicbuzz.com/the-promised-neverland-season-1-review/

"demonslayer_kny"

Last but certainly not least - we have Season One of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. I haven’t seen an anime with so much hype surrounding it since Season One of Attack on Titan! Once again, this is another show that when I finished watching it, I went and read all of the manga. And it was so satisfying! I could find zero flaw, even in the show. It was just so entertaining and the sword battles were among the best I have seen since Bleach and Claymore. I loved the old time, feudal feel to the show and the various personalities throughout, the hardships they all fought against and Tanjiro’s sheer determination to help his sister Nezuko. Also, Nezuko is my Best Girl this year. All I want now are the figures for them all. Fingers crossed we will also get access to the film shorthly, hopefully via Crunchyroll or Funimation.

Not anime?:

"samuraijackcs"

Although not an anime, 2020 was the year I finally managed to finish watching Samurai Jack! Thanks to Manga Entertainment UK who released the complete saga on Blu Ray back in December 2019, the fifth and final season ended Jacks’ story that we have all waited for ever since the show ended abruptly back in 2004. This collection is well worth investing in and the story plus animation even holds up to this day - http://comicbuzz.com/samurai-jack-the-complete-series-review/

Streamable Anime:

"fruits_basket_s1_P2_2"

2020 has definitely been the year I have streamed most of my anime. Fruits Basket Season Two is still my obsession, with Season Two Part One getting a physical release sometime around February 2021. For the last few months though, I have solely been watching it on the Funimation app. If you haven’t seen it already or have preferred the manga, I can assure you this adaptation comes straight from the manga pages and is sure to make you weep. It’s emotional no matter what episode you end up watching.

Other shows I have watched on the app this year include: Demon Slayer, The Promised Neverland, Fire Force, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, How Heavy are the Dumbbells you lift and currently, the final season of Attack on Titan. January is also looking to be a packed year of even more anime to watch, with several second seasons to shows I am highly looking forward to returning to. Funimation has been a must have app on my phone this year, alongside the old faithful Crunchyroll - which I just finished watching ‘Is It Okay To Pick Girls Up In A Dungeon?!’, as well as ‘Mysteria Friends’.

"screenanime"

Another streaming service that came online this year, has been ‘Screen Anime’. Launched back in May by the people behind Anime Limited and Scotland Loves Anime film fest, it was a way of getting through the pandemic in a time that was going to clash with the yearly anime screenings up in Scotland. They offer a monthly service which includes four filmes and a series each month that you can binge. They have also included film premieres before they got a physical release, including ‘Ride Your Wave’ and ‘Lu Over The Wall’. Its a subscription well worth checking out and supporting, with a very affordable cost of under £4.00 a month. However it is only available to view in the UK and Ireland at the moment.

http://comicbuzz.com/screen-anime-june-july-2020-review/

A Good ‘Aul Book:

"cakeswithfaces"

If you have attended any of the MCM Comic Cons in England over the years or just picked up your monthly Neo Magazine, you would be well acquainted with Cakes With Faces. A British company set up by designer Amy Crabtree, who has brought out many ‘kawaii’ alpaca and sushi hoodie designs over the years and whose stall has continuously grown over the near decade she has been trading at cons. She also has a superb YouTube channel that focuses on her trips to Japan and how you can organise your trip too! Which she has now put pen to paper and has created her very own travel guide! All thanks to her kickstarter campaign, the book is finally out and she has even done a second printing, so make sure to check out her website to order your copy today! http://comicbuzz.com/cakes-with-faces-your-guide-to-japan-review/

Comics Galore:

"criticalrole_vmovol1"

I have really been slacking on the comic reviews this year, but two very important franchises do in fact come to the front of my mind. Over the last year or so, I have been enjoying the weekly Critical Role nights but I am a long way off from being up to date on the current Campaign 2. The team behind the Mighty Nein and their DM Matthew Mercer have since teamed up with Dark Horse Comics to put their first Campaign to paper as a comic series. Thus the Origins of Vox Machina was released. However my eyes are solely set on the up-coming Mighty Nein origins stories that are set to be published next year, beginning with our own little sapphire: Jester. http://comicbuzz.com/critical-role-vox-machina-origins-vol-1-review/

"wolvenheartvol1"

Another comic series and company worth checking out, is Wolvenheart from Mad Cave Studios. This epic tale tells the story of not only Van Helsing, but the organisation he establishes to track down the evil demons that have emerged through various points in time. It’s time-traveling demon slayers in a nutshell. With appearances from the Queen of England, Dracula and the infamous - Queen in Black! Follow Van Helsing's apprentice - Sterling Cross, as he travels throughout time to stop the destruction of the Wolvenheart Organisation! http://comicbuzz.com/wolvenheart-vol-1-legendary-slayer-review/

Graphic Novels worth checking out:

"teadragonfestival"

I have really come to love Katie O’Neills’ work in the last year. From her ‘Tea Dragon Society’ series to ‘Aquicorn Cove’ - it just brings me back to the types of books I used to read as a kid. However these ones are still capable of catching my grown-up imagination, by transporting me into a story filled with joy but also personal challenges for the characters. My favorite of which has been the ‘Tea Dragon Festival’ - http://comicbuzz.com/the-tea-dragon-festival-review/. A book and series that is well worth adding to your collection, and also makes as a lovely gift for younger readers. Truly this is one series I would hope to pass down through my family for decades to come.

"themagicfish"

My second graphic novel recommendation has to go to ‘The Magic Fish’ from Random House Graphic. This beautifully illustrated story combines some foreign fairy tales that I have never heard before and entwines them with the struggles that young Tién is going through. The only child of an immigrant family, that moved from Vietnam to America for a better life. Throw in the reality of knowing that he is poorer than his classmates, the amount of work and effort his parents put into their daily lives and the sadness he sees on his mothers’ face when she talks about returning back to Vietnam to visit her ailing mother. Tiéns’ native language is English and although he has dual languages to a certain degree, his parents native tongue will always be Vietnamese. It just adds an extra layer of communication complications, when Tién struggles to understand his own feelings towards boys but doesn't know how to voice them to his parents. It’s a book I am miserably failing to properly describe, but is well worth picking up and reading! Please take my word for it! http://comicbuzz.com/the-magic-fish-review/

A Little Box of Sunshine:

"sokawaiidecember2020"

Each month, without fail I have received my SoKawaii box subscription sent straight from Japan. With a different theme each month, it comes packed full of stationary, useful goods, cups, blankets, plushies etc. Delivered through DHL, it has managed to arrive within days of leaving Japan and does not rely on Japan Post at all. Which at the moment has not shipped to Ireland since March. Just check out my latest review of SoKawaii for their December box to find out how you can sign up and use my discount code: http://comicbuzz.com/sokawaii-december-2020-box-review/

Other noteworthy boxes include Nihon Box, which currently can’t ship to a number of countries at the moment due to Japan Post restrictions. So perhaps its best to wait until normal postal services resume before signing up for your crate. http://comicbuzz.com/nihon-box-march-2020-review/

Another service I found just recent enough, is Leannes Anime over on Facebook. Based in England, she can create custom anime mystery boxes for you, locate certain merch from Japan and is even working on getting a website made for the new year. With quick turn around, fast shipping and reasonable prices, she is well worth checking out for the anime figures and merch that she buys in. Make sure to check out her live videos as well for all the latest merch that arrives. http://comicbuzz.com/leannes-anime-demon-slayer-mystery-box-review/

And last but not least, I want to give a massive shout out to all the Irish conventions and their committee members, stall holders, attendees and guests that have had to cancel all their plans for 2020. Let’s face it, this year sucked in many ways! But outside of that, we all managed to slow down just a tad. To take an extra long breath and just deal with what was in front of us. There will be many more conventions in the future, we will all be extra excited to attend, to get out of the house and even leave our own county at long last! Imagine being able to go to Dublin for Dublin Comic Con and J-Con, to travel to Cork for Kaizoku Con, Galway for Akumakon and maybe even new conventions that haven’t even been announced yet. We will grace those trade halls yet again and we will not take it for granted when we line up to meet an overseas guest.

Here’s to 2021, even if it goes to s*** - at least there will be a new season of anime to watch!
http://comicbuzz.com/zombie-for-sale-review/
http://comicbuzz.com/becky-review/
http://comicbuzz.com/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba-vol-1-review/
In Chapter 3, Sanda and Champo volunteer their time to help the sick alien children. Sanda learns that humans have been brought to Planet Divoc-91 because the Earth is at risk of an extinction level event – and young adults have been moved to safety by the Board of Adversity Scientists for Intergalactic Leadership’ (BASIL), led by a charismatic and fearsome alien named ADRO.

PLANET DIVOC-91 is produced by Dr Bella Starling, Director of Vocal at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Sara Kenney, Creative Director at Wowbagger Productions, in association with the UK Academy of Medical Sciences. “Bella and I were already working together on creative projects to engage audiences in sharing their views about antibiotic resistance and immunisation and when lockdown hit, it became obvious that our thinking could be refocused on the COVID pandemic,” said Kenney. “We realized there was a ton of information and advice about the pandemic out there, but it’s so difficult to know what to believe and who to trust, and there were virtually no young voices in the mix.” The project has since grown in scale and ambition, and there is a young editorial team from UK, India, South Africa, and Malawi who are interviewing experts from scientists to historians, ethicists to anthropologists, and from that material curating articles, creating art and videos in reaction to the interviews.

“Being teenagers and going through the most challenging stage of our lives is hard in itself — but now the impact of this new virus is resonating through our lives without any sense of when this will end,” writes Shanjida Hossain, one of the young adults contributing to the comic, in an interview with Sir Patrick Vallance, the UK Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor; “Having studied hard since the age of five, getting to the very end of our educational journey to face this global pandemic wasn’t something we could have ever planned for, yet here we are, left with nothing but insecurities and confusion.” Shanjida’s interview will accompany PLANET DIVOC-91’s debut chapter.

“Whenever our worlds are turned upside down and we find ourselves crying “what the hell”, we call upon stories to explain “this: this the hell,” Berry writes in the afterword to PLANET DIVOC-91 Chapter One. “Our brains are hardwired with a furious need to find patterns as a means of survival, and we hunt for them - and for their subsequent meanings - everywhere, in everything. Stories bring shape and meaning to random events. They are about the conflict and the resolution; the breaking apart and the coming together; they help us to find hope in darkness and rally us when we are lost and, ultimately, they help us overcome. Faced with the greatest upheaval of a generation, and the strict social obligations keeping us all apart, where better to seek that sense of connection and meaning now than in stories?”

“PLANET DIVOC-91 is a thought experiment, one that’s a metaphor for what we’re currently experiencing around the world with COVID-19,” said Kenney. “We’re releasing the series on WEBTOONS, because it's an inclusive, wide-reaching, digital platform, with a global audience of 10 million readers daily, and we want to foster a dialogue in the comments section, about the pandemic and where we go from here. We’ve also got some exclusive mixes hidden as Easter Eggs in the comic starting with one of the best UK Grime DJs, and a uniquely talented and much loved producer in his own right Grandmixxer. Chapter 2 features a mix from one of the most important new-generation experimental UK club music producer, artist and label owner LCY. Chapter 3 features an Afrofuturism playlist from one of the UKs best loved MCs Juice Aleem. And at the end of the day, we want readers to come back each month for the story and art. Why is Planet Divoc-91 inhabited only by 16-25 year old humans? Who are these strange aliens? Sanda Oung, a bit of a conspiracy theorist at first, has to figure out what is real and who to trust.”

The project was kick started via NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre seed funding who are providing continued support. Additional supporters include The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC); Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC); The University of Manchester through the Wellcome Institutional Strategic Support Fund award; Sarah Iqbal, DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance; Anita Shervington, Blast Fest and Nabeel Petersen, Interfer (South Africa). The series was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our aim is to empower audiences to make sense of a pandemic situation, to create a forum for their ideas, and to use participatory arts to inform science research and influence science policy,” said Kenney.

“We’re creating a crazy, exquisite corpse with writers and artists taking on the same characters that will be accessible, entertaining and informative,” said Starling. “The wider project will capture young people’s thinking and ideas about pandemics and related research, to feed into scientific research and policy, as well as helping and challenging our research communities to think about the best ways of actively involving young adults in ongoing and future research”

PLANET DIVOC-91 debuted on July 15, 2020 Free on WebToons: https://bit.ly/planetdivoc91.

When penniless adventure Luvander sets out to find and loot a legendary dungeon, she's just out to fill her pockets. Little does she know, one of her own dark secrets will change her entire world.

ComicBuzz's Chris Adair sat down with Sebastian and Galaad to get the scoop on the series!

Can you give us the elevator pitch for the series?

I’m terrible at elevator pitches, but luckily David Harper, writer and runner of the Off Panel podcast and SKTCHD.com came to our aid when he described the book as “Classic Final Fantasy as done by Hayao Miyazaki” which is a huge compliment but actually hits the tone and themes of the book right on the head. Thanks, David!

Scales and Scoundrels clearly takes its inspiration from epics such as LoTR but there is also a manga element to the art. Could you both describe what influences you brought to the table when beginning this story?

G: Manga has had a long and durable influence on my art style, starting from my reading of Dragon Ball as a kid, to Akira, Nausicaa and 20th century boys. I was born in a golden era of Japanese animation on French TV, with shows like Saint Seiya, the Secret of Blue Water or the Mysterious Cities of Gold. These series were my first venture into worlds of wonder, mysteries and adventure. Ever since I read the Hobbit and played Zelda games, I’ve been wanting to draw my own series of fantasy adventure. I’m not attracted to the typical fantasy tropes like swords, sorcery, prophecies, etc. What I like in fantasy is the call to adventure. That tower/dungeon/cave you see on the horizon, the sense of wonder you experience when exploring an unknown and beautiful world, or that tingle of excitement you get when embarking on a long journey to far, distant places.

SG: I was an avid reader for YA fantasy novels growing up in Germany, which were a really popular genre at the time. So that’s a big influence on me, alongside comics like the ones Galaad mentioned, all of which were also personal favorites of mine. Especially early Dragon Ball and Asterix that were always really exciting and thrilling but first and foremost they were just funny, like I remember laughing out loud while reading them. That kind of joy is something I’m hoping to bring to SCALES & SCOUNDRELS.

"Scales

A lot of mainstream comics on the stands tend to be aimed at a mature audience. How important was it for you to create a truly all ages comic?

G: We’ve seen so many dark and gritty tales of fantasy that I’d started to long for something brighter and more colorful. Like all genre literature at some point in their history (as for superhero comics), in an effort to legitimize the genre, creators started to delve into darker and grimmer themes. But by doing this, fantasy was stripped of what made it appealing to me, chiefly the fun and rollicking adventures. I have little interest in the grim hardship of the grey-brown world of Game of Thrones. Which doesn’t mean I don’t like sex and violent deaths in my comics! Haha! I also want to tackle more mature stories in the future, and I’m curious to see how I could bend my style to fit those type of stories. It would be quite interesting. But Scales & Scoundrels is a love letter to the series of our youth, and we owe it to ourselves to do something everybody can enjoy, and bring back some of that fun and excitement. It’s not that easy to pull it off!

Luvander is your lead character in this story. Can you tell our readers a little about her?

SG: Luvander is a firebrand. Brash, cocky, easily excited and loathe to back down. She’s the kind of character who immediately gets into trouble wherever she goes just by being herself. So any situation we put her in will quickly spiral out of control, as she’s just a big ball of energy and excitement. But there’s a lot more to her than meets the eye. In #1 we already get a glimpse at the weight she’s carrying in her heart, and a big part of the first arc, and the first big adventure, is discovering Lu as a character and bringing her into focus.

"

Scales and Scoundrels is is high action with plenty humour but also has this mystery of who/what Luvander is. Will this lead to darker themes appearing over time?

SG: For sure. Like Galaad said, SCALES & SCOUNDRELS is an all-ages, all-readers book, but we’re not going to tiptoe around darker or more serious subject matter. We want to challenge ourselves to tackle story and drama in a way that is approachable yet impactful, without relying on excessive violence or exploitation. Sorrow, loss and grief are all aspects of life, unpleasant as they may be, so our characters will have to struggle with these things if they are to truly resonate with the reader.

By the end of the first arc readers will have a pretty good picture of the spectrum of stories and themes we want to deal with in the series.

After reading the first issue, I think it’s fair to say that Luvander appears to be motivated by selfish needs. What was the thought process behind this rather than the classic selfless hero we’re used to seeing in fantasy?

SG: Part of it was precisely that, it flies in the face of the “classic” do-gooding fantasy hero who rolls into town and sticks their nose into everyone’s business to find quests that need completing. While I have a lot of love for those laundry-list heroes, but with Luvander we wanted to add a bit of spice to the mix.

When we meet her she’s out for herself and wants nothing more than wealth and fame (and who among us can say they don’t entertain those notions again from time to time). But a lot of the fun and drama of SCALES & SCOUNDRELS is our characters struggling with their own desires and the obstacles fate (or they themselves) keep putting in their way. Life is what happens while we make other plans.

"

We’re also introduced to a slew of other characters in the book. Will the story be focused solely on Lu or will the supporting cast get their time in the spotlight?

SG: By the end of #1 the reader will have met our four main scoundrels: Luvander, Prince Aki of the Scarlet Sands Empire, his bodyguard and royal shadow Koro, and a plucky dwarven lady named Dorma Ironweed. These are our core cast for the first arc.

Luvander remains the main character, and her destiny is at the heart of the series, but every character in SCALES & SCOUNDRELS will have an arc, a history and a journey and over the course of the first big adventure we’ll get to know them all much better. I’m really hoping readers will find a favorite character in our group.

Sebastian, with Shirtless Bear Fighter and Scales and Scoundrels, you’ll soon have two books released in quick succession. What made now the right time to jump from editor to writer?

SG: The timing just worked out, the stars aligned. When scripting work on Shirtless Bear-Fighter wrapped up about two years ago, I had created a little structure for myself where I would write an hour or so every morning before beginning any editing work. With Shirtless wrapped I was looking into replacing it with something, anything else, just to keep that habit going.

It was around that time that Galaad and I first started talking about working together. The fact that both books would come out within a few months of one another is just one of those coincidences, but one I did steer towards a bit. A lateral move in comics can be pretty difficult, if you’re known as an editor (or an artist, inker etc) it takes a lot of force to allow for people to see you as anything BUT that. So I know that if I wanted to make a foray into writing, I’d need more than one kind of story and one kind of genre to breach that wall. I couldn’t be more proud and excited to make my writing debut with comics like Shirtless and Scales.

"

Who edits the editor?

SG: In SCALES & SCOUNDRELS Galaad and I tackle the creative challenges of editing together: working out storylines and character moments, making sure it all feels natural and earned. We also go over storyboards and page layouts together, between my experience as an editor and Galaad’s talent and work as a storyboard artist we built a great system that provides Galaad with a lot of freedom but still puts each page through a process where we workshop it until it’s just right.

How long’s this story been in the works? Have you planned multiple arcs or are you waiting to see how sales go?

SG: Galaad is currently working on #7 and we have scripts broken down through #10. The third arc is the one I’m currently most excited to write, and I think sales will be strong enough to allow us to make SCALES & SCOUNDRELS for quite some time. Obviously we have more story ideas than we know what to do with, but I also have a desire to keep the issues tight and fast and not get too indulgent.

Ultimately, we have an overarching story in mind, and a path to get there. How many detours or stops along the road we make on the way there does depend on our ability to keep the book and sales viable, but we’re both confident fans of SCALES & SCOUNDRELS will have plenty to look forward to in the months and years to come.

"

How does the collaboration work between the two of you in creating an issue?

G: I am fortunate enough to have a “tailor-made” comic written for me. Sebastian and I started discussing this series together from scratch. We realized we had many common influences and wanted to tell the same story, so we just put all our ideas into a giant bible document and started from there. We don’t want to bore the reader down with walls of world-building and lengthy dialogues, but that lore gives the world coherence and it fuels our creativity.

Sebastian’s scripts are very open. I like the freedom. There is no going around the fact that, in the end, comics are a visual medium. I prefer to discuss scenes over a storyboard than big, convoluted panel descriptions. And there’s no denying that the real talent of a comic writer is to suggest powerful images in a few words. Not everybody can do that.

Once we’ve storyboarded the whole issue, I pencil, ink and color everything myself digitally. Barring any complications, I produce one page per day.

SG: Galaad is a dream to work with. I can write a little paragraph about an idea or a concept that came to me and he’ll shoot back a sketch or a rough and some thoughts and notes of his own within a few hours, and that fuels me to alter, tweak or solidify that idea. We have a big and ever-growing document of ideas, concepts, lore and places for the series that we draw from. The first big adventure has been set in stone for some time, but we’re actually now reaching the point of working on the issues where we expand the story and explore the world more, which is really exciting.

At this point I’d also love to call out our series letterer and designer Jeff Powell, who does such a brilliant job with the lettering and general design and feel of the series. We wanted to make a fantasy comic, but with cutting edge and modern design sensibilities to stand out from the pack, and Jeff does that with bells on. I can’t recommend hiring a professional letterer and designer to new comic book creators more. They will take your work and make it look superpro.

Galaad, correct me if I’m wrong but this is your first foray into American comics. How did you get involved in this project? Does your approach to this book differ from how you tackle comics back in France?

G: Ha! Where to start?

I got involved in the project after I contacted Sebastian, because I was quite ignorant of the American way of doing comics and wanted the insight of a top-notch editor. Turns out Sebastian is an even better writer than editor, he liked my art, and we decided to work together!

I used to make storyboard and design cinematics for video games, so my experience with French comics is that of a reader more than a creator, but there’s a huge difference on how we produce comics. I’d say both methods have their pros and cons. Most French comics are bigger format, with a bit more action and detail on the page… which I don’t like personally. It makes the pages more difficult to design as it becomes more cluttered. Too many panels, too many angles. In comics, each page tells a story, but has to be designed as one giant illustration. You need balance, composition. When the page is a mosaic of panels, it becomes quite a challenge to keep it whole and unified. And that, as you may know, is why Moebius is revered among comic artists.

As a result, pages take more time to produce, production times increase and the idea of a monthly comics is something alien to Franco-Belgian BD. These books have become works of art that take years to publish, which is so frustrating. Of course, some creators have started to break free of the traditional way of making BD.

A fact that would surprise the American audience I think, is how widespread and mainstream bande-dessinée is in France. Every bookstore and library, no matter how small, has a BD section and everybody reads them. That’s why, although superhero comics rarely break a few thousand sales over here, big titles like Lucky Luke, Blake & Mortimer or Asterix domestically sell in the 500.000 or more, for only a fraction of the population of the US. But do not be fooled by those sales numbers. The situation is dire for many French creators, and these titles are so expensive to produce, from the art to the actual printing, with beautiful, gloss hardcovers and thick paper stock, that BD has stopped being a popular medium and is now in the realm of luxury items.

So, circling back to your question after this whole essay on comics, working on an Image title is a way for me to produce a fast-paced, monthly ongoing story that sprawls hundreds and hundreds of pages, the likes of which I could not have done in France.

What else are you both reading at the moment that you’re not currently working on?

G: For my part, I read Saga, Shutter and, unsurprisingly, a good deal of manga. I’m reading an ecchi manga called Nozoki Ana. More accurately, I’m reading previous works from this mangaka, but Nozoki Ana is his superior work. Don’t google it at work though, this is NSFW. I’ve also just read Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms (Yunagi no Machi Sakura no Kuni), a short drama about the aftermath of Hiroshima bombings.

SG: The past year has been one of the busiest of my career so far, so my pleasure reading time has really taken a toll. But I have recently finished Takemitsu Zamurai by Issei Eifuku and Taiyō Matsumoto and I think I may finally hunt down the last few volumes of Tezuka’s Phoenix that I’m still missing.

"

Any final words for our ComicBuzz readers?

G: Thanks for the interview, thanks for reading it, and if you’re considering buying Scales & Scoundrels, we hope you like what you see and want to give it a try! We’ve worked very hard to bring a true all-ages ongoing series to the market. We’re very excited it’s finally in the reader’s hands.

SG: What Galaad said! If you’re looking for a large, diverse, sprawling fantasy adventure, look no further than SCALES & SCOUNDRELS!

Thanks again for taking the time to talk to us. Summoned by the ArchDruid, he is assigned a mission that will help save his people but at a great cost. This is a story filled with numerous species from across the galaxies, including the humans living on Earth, alien technologies, a religious cult looking to expand their followers at whatever cost, and two species that are about to collide under unusual circumstances…

The story begins just as our lead character is assigned to a mission, which, due to his heroic efforts and devotion over the years, is delegated by the head of his religious order. We are introduced to a colony of extraterrestrials, their starship travelling throughout the galaxy on a religious crusade, a clear analogy to what happened across our world just a few centuries ago. Each of the colonists on board the vessel is devoted to their religion, but ‘The Knight’ has to undergo life shattering surgery in order to carry out the mission. This leaves him beyond scared knowing the consequences of his sacrifice. It opens up a new approach to the story, encouraging future character development.

‘The Knight’ is a veteran warrior amongst his community, having fought against many tribes throughout the galaxy, in the name of his God - Triberus. His actions and ranking are seen as admirable amongst his fellow worshippers, but there seems to also be some who think the opposite. Meanwhile, down on Earth, we have two flatmates whose personalities could not be more opposite from each other. We have Kyle, the alien loving mooch, who is an unemployed ‘free spirit’. He also, unfortunately, lives like a slob and regularly dodges the rent. His housemate Aran holds a steady job and seems to be constantly on edge, especially with regards to Kyle’s behaviour. However as we can see in the comic, Aran has allowed for Kyle to stay in their shared house for a long period of time without paying the rent, covering both shares for quite a long time, but has yet to actually kick out his freeloader. This could be due to the fact he does not want to be alone in the house, or he simply has not had the time to clear up the situation. This may lead to a clash in the future.

Regarding Aran, his job also has its own annoyances with his boss overlooking all his work and passing it onto his son. This seems to suggest there will be a grand confrontation between Aran and his boss in the near future.

"Arkian

Back in the midst of space, ‘The Knight’ is appointed a mission to destroy a creature they once thought they had annihilated. Knowing both where it resides and the danger involved getting close to it, Knight must undergo an experimental surgery in order to gain the upperhand in his mission, which will see him looking towards the humans of Earth for assistance. Where this story will lead is still unclear, as I would like to see how Knight will meet both Aran and Kyle, although this currently published chapters hint at plenty of action to come.

Arkian has so far managed to capture my attention, with the sci-fi orientated artwork presenting interesting character designs, including a number of alien species. However, it was the script and the characters that really pulled me in; how a mixture of alien species, all bound on one ship, have devoted themselves to the one religion. It actually took me aback, as I had not encountered this idea before. The advanced technology of their society has allowed them to understand how to alter DNA, thus changing the biological and physical appearance of those that join their religion, assessing their strengths and putting them to work in a specialised sector. The artwork is clean, well bordered and detailed. It is certainly original when it comes to designs, but includes knowing nods to numerous other shows/books/games. For example, a character similar to Mad Moxxi from Borderlands appears on the pizza van on page 7; a clear nod towards those inspirations and hobbies close to each of the creators.

Arkian is co-created by two Cork lads by the names of Aran Froggatt and Kyle Kenny Cody. Childhood friends with a shared passion for comics, they fell out of touch, and reconnected one night over a drunken phone call. Driven with the sudden need to create a comic, the pair worked for months on end in order to devise a solid plot, history, designs and world in which this series would take place. I came across these two comic creators whilst attending Brocon last month, where they were sharing the news of their work. New chapters are usually released once every three weeks, with Chapter 19 hitting the website soon. Since the beginning, Arkian has had a loyal following, which is set to rise even more as positive praise of this series hits the ears of more interested comic fans.

Arkian is still in the early stages of its story, but is set to pick up some real pace very soon as the action is about to get underway. Make sure and check out their social media links below, as well as where you can read this on-going webcomic for yourself. If you love sci-fi, extraterrestrials and alien loving room-mates, then check out Arkian.
