God of War Ragnarök continues from the last game, where you are immersed in the immersive story of Kratos and Atreus. For those who haven't played God of War or can't remember the plot from the last game, a handy recap gives you an overview of the last; game which was much needed by me.

Ragnarök on the PS5 does utilise the power of the console, and from the first action, you see the world of God of War in stunning detail from the characters, level design, enemies, and surroundings are precise and pristine. It takes your breath away, and throughout the, entirety of the game, you are surprised and just in awe of the fantastic screenshot-laden game. I mean, the first impressions do; set the tone for the whole game, and it doesn't disappoint. It's very hard; to find any visual defects in the game; the landscapes and the variety of environments are stunning. I loved the transition from dark colosseum-like structures to open-world beaches, underwater levels, and much more. The game seamlessly brings the player through the story to playable parts, the game has a more immersive feel, and you feel a part of the story.

The cinematics throughout the game is further enhanced by the wonderful music score and sound effects. The superb music enhances every boss fight and cinematic piece. This is enhanced through the controller's haptic feedback, thinking of extra texture throughout the game.

Gameplay centres on using Kratos in this sandboxed environment which isn't an open world. This, means that levels are very structured, and God of War has made intricate levels that are wonderful to explore and find things. Levels are even more intriguing when you must use Atreus and work as a team to solve puzzles and progress further in the world. I didn't feel burdened and bored at any point when doing missions or side missions which just; made the game more enjoyable.

You can build your skill tree and upgrade your armour and weapons to customise; to your play style. The combat is superb; levelling up helps you get additional combos and move sets.

The weapon choices do give a richer; and deeper gameplay feel. Each weapon will affect how you play and how you level it up. I loved the diverse power-up options. The shields are intriguing; some shields are designed as big huge shields that; block, whereas others are more nimble and rely on parries.

Boss fights add another depth to the gameplay; you fight a mixture of Gods, Creatures, and the undead. Each boss battle requires you to approach the fight strategically, and button-bashing won't help! Some of the bosses are huge and impressive in scale. The mini-bosses and random bosses appear throughout the exploration of the world.

Game Length and playtime will be up to 40 hours, but this really depends on how many of the side quests; and if you decide to collect every trinket in the game. This, is a ballpark figure, and if you are taking your time as I did, it's easily a much longer and richer experience. There is a real timeless quality to the exploration in the game; it never seems like a chore; this includes the side missions. The side missions are as rewarding and interesting as the main missions too!

Graphic Fidelity Modes:

Resolution mode: 4k @ 30 FPS

Performance mode: 60 FPS

Performance Mode with High Frame Rate: 4k @ 40 FPS

Frame Rate Mode: 120 FPS

It's hard to find a more complete game in terms of gameplay, storytelling, and just all-out fun. It stays faithful to the storytelling and general awesomeness of God of War (2018) but is bigger, bolder and; is a beautiful next step in the journey of God of War. God of Ragnarök has this wonderful cinematic element that underpins the entire game, the transitions from a narrative-based story to solving puzzles and ultimately beating huge enemies. The game has this beautiful flow, and I ended up losing hours in the game where I was so immersed that I didn't feel the time go by. Ragnarök achieves this wonderful timeless immersion through fantastic level design, great storytelling, believable characters, stunning visuals, and amazing action rolled into one. The buddy team of Kratos and Atreus just makes the story and gameplay more involved to the player without making it seem like a standalone one-player.

Overall: 9.5/10

Developer: Naughty Dog

Platform: PS5

Genre: Action

Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

The Last of Us Part I is the faithful remake of The Last of Us, which was released, in 2013. You follow the beautiful and bleak tale of Joel and Ellie as they traverse America in a post-apocalyptic and zombie world. The player explores; a host of amazing areas that provide a wonderful backdrop to an amazing; and enthralling story.

The PS5 version of the The Last of Us Part I is a rebuild of the classic. I have played; the original Last of Us a long time ago. The new updated and rebuilt version brings this amazing action-packed game into the present and truly, uses the power of the PS5 to enhance every detail of the game. The fidelity of the game is the modern generation and is more than worthy of a replay of this classic.

The game, in general across the board, is more polished from the graphics, control, lighting and music too.

From the first scene, the game is a wonderful mix of a dark, beautiful, bleak, and mysterious world. The game is wonderfully cinematic throughout every scene and is worthy of the photo mode. Every transition from building to open area has a sense of tension, and the players become immersed in the Last of Us experience. The core gameplay is a mixture of compromises of stealth and action/shooter elements; the game allows you to choose your approach as it suits your play style. You can be all gung-ho and just go out all guns blazing. Stealth requires a more thought-out and slow approach to the game. Supplies and items are limited in the game, which enhances the core survivor elements of the game but further entrenches the player in this post-apocalyptic world. Your choice of upgrades and use of ammunition all play a vital role in your survival.

The game uses the dualsense to help immerse the player even further. The haptic feedback helps to wrench the tension further by accenting and being activated during the speech by characters; it helps emphasise the delivery of lines.

A neat teach is the numerous difficulties from very easy to hardcore. Even if you aren't a veteran of these games, there is a mode to suit you. The easier mode allows the player to focus even more on the engrossing story and beautiful world with only having a limited challenge, but for those who want to experience a tough and challenging game, the option is there too.

For those who want an additional challenge, there is a permadeath mode where death will require you to replay an act, a chapter or the entire game, again depending on which setting you choose.

Speedrun mode is unlocked when you complete a playthrough of the game. This allows you to track your current playtime and chapter playtime too.

The prequel chapter Left Behind is also included in this version. This chapter explores the relationship between Ellie and Riley in Boston. Another bonus to play in this stunning game and; to explore more of Ellie too.

Fidelity mode lets the game run in native 4K mode while trying to keep a consistent 30fps; this is the mode I used for a vast chunk of my playthrough. I loved seeing every detail in glorious 4K.

Performance mode targets to keep the game at 60fps while scaling the resolution dynamically, which upscales to 4K, making movement and the combat even more immersive and fluid.

120Hz plus Fidelity mode is supported; on 120Hz compatible displays, this tries to hit the sweet spot between fidelity mode and performance mode, trying to retain 40fps while running native 4K.

Unlocked frame rate Performance mode is only available on a 120Hz display that uses a Variable Refresh rate to support greater than 60fps with a target of 120fps.

The Last of Us Part I has a truly immersive and immense feel throughout the game. The brilliant story, cast of characters, voice acting and beautiful world make this game such; a brilliant experience. Each element of the gameplay is polished and refined; you feel a part of every action and feel a part of the game. The game intertwines an amazing, engrossing story with fantastic gameplay mechanics. The world is stunning and seems huge too. You can play in either stealth or action; the choice is yours. The game combines all elements of a blockbuster film and a stunning horror survival game that is truly engrossing and immersive. Other inspirations for the game are King Kong and Godzilla. It's a side-scrolling 2D pixel art destruction game you; choose your "Giga '', a prehistoric creature \\ monster whom you control to destroy the many stages of the game. It's a wild all-out action game.

Before you get into the action, you must choose your monster (Giga) of choice. Once you select your monster, you can customise and pick what items you want to upgrade. More options to upgrade become available as you play through the game. The rouge-like elements of the game allow you to unlock more items as you progress and die through each stage.

While the game does take inspiration from Rampage, it doesn't have a lot of key mechanics; it has its mechanics. You march your monster and use your melee or special attacks to wreak havoc on each stage. It's an action-packed side-scrolling shoot 'em up and mash-up game. You control your monster, and you customise your power-ups to destroy buildings and everything else in your way, little; people beware. The game has fantastic 2D pixel art that gives a glorious retro feel to the game. Music and sound effects evoke classic retro games too. It's a wonderful, updated version for modern players. Controls are responsive, and while the game is one-dimensional, it's super fun.

Gigapocalypse is a wonderful all-out side-scrolling retro-inspired action game. You can choose your monster of choice and customise it to use the powers you want. The game does get a bit repetitive as the levels are different in theme and style, but the gameplay is pretty much just one form of action. While the premise seems simple, it's far from simple and can be infuriating. Addictively frustrating is the best description that can be coined for this game.

TEN is a side-scrolling fast-paced puzzle game that requires fast wit and reactions. The game has three modes: casual, normal, and "Hell Mode". I found the normal mode hellish enough, but if you need a further challenge, your wish is catered for. If you do find the normal mode too tough and want to navigate the story and the game in general, the casual mode is an awesome feature.

Each room (level) has varying mechanics that you must learn to navigate it's; a case of die and learn, then navigate to the next room where the puzzles get; more complex, and you die even more. The rage can creep in quickly, so some persistence is required, and each stage has a satisfying ending - big huge angry bosses! I loved the bosses and boss levels; a healthy spattering of both helps; to keep the levels novel and makes you want to battle through the countless deaths.

If you do die too much, the game does have the ability to refresh your health which seems to be once per stage run.

Another key feature which adds another depth to the game is the upgrade and skill system, which allows you to somewhat take the edge of the game by enhancing your character. These include better jump, more lives and better ability to avoid bullets etc.

The skill and upgrades are based on the number of coins you collect through the game. These help to reduce the difficulty and incentivises collecting the coins.

A likeness to Super Meat Boy with the saw-related deaths is the obvious comparison but there; are a whole host of other ways to die in this game and different mechanics and storytelling. This game does have a dark and broody vibe throughout the pixelated 8-bit graphics with a distinct lack of colour, giving an awesome visual style to the game. The lack of context at the start of the game, in particular, gives a mystery to the game, which gets fleshed out as your progress through the game. The story is interesting and adds another level to the game; it's intriguing and rewarding in equal measure.

The soundtrack enhances the gaming experience; it's bombastic and loud and adds to the tension in every room. It's absolutely banging music that perfectly accompanies this dark and wonderful game. Sound effects also feel impactful and smack you in the face as you consistently die over and over. Sound production is complementary in all aspects and makes for an even more immersive experience. dBXY Collective are responsible for the soundtrack.

This game is that classic 2D 8-bit puzzle game that has been modernised and made into a great game that's both tough and intriguing. The classic puzzle style mixed with a chunky high adrenaline soundtrack is great high octane fun. The casual mode is a godsend for those who get infuriated! It does remind me of SNES and Mega Drive games, and it's somewhere in between Mario and Sonic games but with an emphasis on puzzles. Retro puzzler is probably the closest in terms of genre. The game takes a humourful look at the genre of platform games; you play as an enemy in a normal platform game from the view of the enemy's perspective. This does give the game a unique theme and context to the entire game, which is built upon as your progress through the game.

The main differentiator between this game and retro platformer and puzzle games is that the character automatically moves from left to right and reverses when you hit an obstacle such as a wall. You don't control the lateral movement of the character at all. The player is in control of dashing, jumping, and using special abilities. While there is a huge amount of platform elements to Wunderling DX, the game is a puzzle game in essence. The player must figure out the best route to get the goal. After completing a series of puzzle-based levels, you will encounter the boss level, where the dynamic changes, and you must defeat the boss enemy.

The game is a beautiful and fun-filled platform puzzle game that has a humorous look at puzzle platforms. It's inspired by games from the SNES and Mega Drive but firmly stands on its own due to the humour, turning gaming conventions on their head, and allowing the user to only jump or use a special item as opposed to fully control the movement of your character like in a platform game.

A thoroughly enjoyable retro puzzle.

A free demo of Wunderling DX is available on Steam and Switch too.

Overall: 7/10
Developer: FromSoftware

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X (Reviewed)|S

Genre: Action, RPG

Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment

Elden Ring is the long-awaited latest release from FromSoftware. FromSoftware is most notable for their Dark Souls game which is brutally tough and unforgiving. Elden Ring follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, but the game provides an open-world experience with this action RPG title. It's not a total departure from the Souls franchise but the next evolution in the gaming series.

It must be noted that the gaming experience in terms of graphic fidelity and glitches may vary from system to system. On the Xbox Series X, I have had no game-breaking bugs in my playthrough, I have put approximately fifty hours into the game, and I haven't finished it yet. The visuals and the game, in general, is stunning; and I experienced a very little; slowdown during the majority of my playthrough. During my playthrough, I did notice some popup of and the odd elements of slowdown; but this was minor in the grand scheme of things and didn't detract from the game. The Xbox Series X supports two graphical modes: quality mode, which supports 4K native with a frame rate of 40-45 FPS, and performance mode, which targets 50-60 FPS at a lower resolution.

Elden Ring comprises the classic elements of an RPG - talk to NPCs, level up, kill enemies and progress on to big huge boss fights. A huge open world is your backdrop. I have to say the open world of Elden Ring is amazing; there are tons of quests to do and lots of items to find strewn all over the world. The graphical fidelity is superb, and the variety in different areas gives you a sense of awe. Some of the scenery is jaw-dropping, and the use of lighting effects is fantastic. I love the initial surprise and change in scenery in each distinct section of the map.

Gameplay and play style is dictated by the character build: strength builds, magic build or stealth build. There are numerous ways to play the game, but your first run-through of the game will give you only a taste. The choice of build and what you level up does affect your gameplay directly as knights will go for head-on combat, whereas mages and magicians will cast at a distance. The feel of the game is reminiscent of Souls, melee; combat requires skill to understand enemy attacks, avoid them and attack the right point. This ability to understand your enemy applies even more to the amazing boss battles. Bosses in Elden Ring are unmatched by any other game; they are huge and difficult. The bosses are extremely rewarding when you do defeat them. It must be noted; you must prepare to die over and over again and to run away too! This game is a tough slog for new players and will require persistence. Your playstyle will be affected by the trinkets and NPCs you encounter. Depending on what items you pick and NPCs you talk to, you will get different items. The items, weapons and armour will directly affect your skills and attributes; weapons will require certain stats to wield them. The game has numerous combinations and permutations. It's a learning experience with lots of trial and error.

Elden Ring is a tough game, but the open-world nature allows for players to explore and gather more items when they become stuck. I found the Souls games much tougher as there was less variety when you became stuck. Elden Ring's open world allows you to find new areas, bosses and dungeons to explore before coming back to the main game. Fifty hours in, and I have only got through maybe half of the game; the game is huge in scale and endeavour.

The cinematics, art, sound, music score and voice acting is amazing. George R. R. Martin helped with the story and the general mythology of the world. There are elements around the world that have George's stamp on them for sure.

The FromSoftware game is known for its rich community features. Elden Ring supports a whole host of online options that you will unlock as you play through the game. You can play co-op with friends or invade other people's games, or be invaded. The co-op modes and invasion modes add another layer to this stunning game. All these options can be turned off as well if you prefer a pure solo run. The ability to leave notes, helpful or not, is still available, which is novel at first but gets tiresome fairly quick.

Elden Ring is a wonderful open-world game that; is a breath of fresh air to the genre. Its lack of a narrative-led story where you are spoon-fed every element is quite a change. Everything is stripped to enhance the game and the gameplay. The emphasis throughout the game is one of discovery, dying and exploring this beautiful world. It's extremely tough that requires persistence and understanding various combat and item mechanics. I loved this game, it's amazing, and I still have lots to play!

Overall: 9.5/10

We got our hands on a preview build of Splashteam's second game Tinykin. Tinykin is a wonderful cartoon animated 3D adventure. It does pay homage to Pikmin for sure and does give me Toy Story vibes through the look and feel. The perspective is from a small character (the size of a small toy) in a human world. You start in the living room, which seems massive, and you encounter a whole cast of creatures on your journey. What hit me straight away was the stunning cartoony graphics that were bright but in a beautiful 3D world. I was more than pleasantly surprised; it was polished from start to finish.

The preview does give you an entire level to discover the game mechanics and a feel for the game. You play as Milo, the explorer, who is in this amazing living room full of life and creatures. The game does have that mix of platform and puzzle all rolled into one. It's a joyful, bright, and wonderful experience. The game has tons of characters, and the cartoon art style gives a fantastic look and feel.

Milo has a supporting cast of Tinykins little creatures with special powers; in the preview, you encounter two types of Tinykins who can move items and blow things up.

A mix of platform, strategy and using Tinykins constitute the gameplay. It's a very fun platform game with a lot of puzzles to solve in a beautifully rendered world. I played the game using an Xbox controller, and the controls are super intuitive. The game does give directed guidelines as you uncover a new mechanic. The game is super slick and a real joy to play.

I was impressed from the start with the wonderful look and feel. The game looks and feels polished. The game mechanics were intuitive, and the art style lends itself to a beautiful looking game. This one level was a great taster, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the full game holds and how much richer it will be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p-5lieVp8Q

It's all about big attitudes, big guns and big, enemies. The game takes a light-hearted look at the usually super serious genre of first-person shooters.

While the game follows the classic first-person shooter genre, there is a third-person view which I ended up using most of the time due to the game mechanics. You assume the role of "Serious" Sam Stone who is, in Rome to find the holy grail. This plot point serves as the main storyline in the game. Along your journey, you encounter a rag-tag bunch of characters that will help you on your way and help to develop the story. Humour and fun are also central to Serious Sam and makes it stand out from other first-person shooters. The cast of characters helps drive plotline, slapstick comedy, jokes, and just general absurdity in the game. It does a good job incorporating this in the game and, it is constant.

However, the gameplay and mechanics are odd; the game has a clunky, heavy feel. Movement feels laboured, and aiming is also not smooth. It just doesn't feel that smooth; the feel a first-person should have. Enemies spawn randomly out of portals. I found it hard to figure out if they, are in front of me or behind. This is problematic in the first-person mode, so I switched to the third person; this does alleviate some of the issues of random enemies spawning and not knowing where they are.

In the first level, I managed to activate the Christmas theme for the entire; level which consisted of Christmas themed songs as the background music. It was awful, and to compound things further, terrible sound effects of drones persisted through the level. The first level was frustrating and annoying. As I progressed through more levels, I did enjoy the new characters and enemies you encounter. The look and feel of the game did seem somewhat dated, though. In general, the game seems dated, though.

Serious Sam 4 is a not so serious first-person shooter that has lots of actions and some gorgeous monsters to kill. However, the gameplay is clunky and lacks smoothness. The sound effects and background music in certain levels were annoying. It's just a very mixed bag. I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. It's mediocre and dated in general. The game lacks the level of polish and refinement I was expecting.

Overall: 5/10
Developer: Dejima

Platform: PC

Genre: Action

Publisher: Thunderful Publishing

Firegirl is a 2D platformer action roguelike game where you assume the role of a young firefighter. The firefighter has a pickaxe and a water hose to douse the immense fires. While putting out the fire, you will save the stranded people and cats too! As the game is a roguelike, the levels are procedurally generated using various environments as the backdrop to your heroic actions.

The game is 2D, but the mixture of the pixelated art style and the side-scrolling adventure gives a 3D feel to the game. Characters are bright and vibrant; the characters bob up and down too all the time. Your spawn point is the fire station. The fire station is where you purchase power-ups that are persisted throughout runs and allow you to tackle the bigger blazes. The roguelike elements come from the fact that you gain money and fans after each fire which help you upgrade your firefighter and their tools. At first, your water hose is weak, and you have little health, but after a few hours, this will increase. You gain cash for finishing missions and saving people; you will gain fans in the process who will also donate to aid you too. Cash can be used for power-ups; fans help you get donations.

I love the roguelike genre in general, and I love the novel approach that Firegirl takes. You hack through doors, jump over obstacles, and use your hose to put out fires and float around huge levels. I liked that you must be aware of enemies in platforms; that may be above or below you. It's a fast action-paced game that feels like an arcade game too. The sound, environment, voice-over, and story are all great. The game is polished.

I loved the pixelated art style of the game and was unsure how the roguelike elements of the game would work. However, after a few runs, it was clear that their roguelike elements made sense and made it more playable. It also increases the longevity of the game. The game does have a backstory, but I'm more about getting stuck in the game. It's an addictive hack and splash adventure. It melds a mix of platformer elements with lots of actions that reminds me of arcade games. It's tonnes of fun, plays fantastic and looks; awesome.

Overall: 8/10
Developer: Elden Pixels

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5 (Reviewed), Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

Genre: Adventure

Publisher: Elden Pixels, Clear River Games

Alwa's Legacy is a modern update of the classic dungeon crawler games of the 90s. It's a mix of action, platformer, puzzles and tonnes of action too. It would fall into the Metroidvanias genre, a mixture of Metroid and Castlevania. You can expect a beautifully pixelated world that you must explore to uncover every secret and become the best version of yourself. It does have a classic retro feel too.

First impressions of the game were a bright and mystical world full of secrets. The main character has no idea where they are or what's going. The story starts from a point where you must figure out why Alwa is here and you; begin your journey. You must explore numerous dungeons to figure out your place in the world. As you move through each level, you find new characters, powerups, spells, and the story unravels. It's an adventure that isn't linear and will require you to traverse, teleport and find secrets in every nook and cranny. As new areas become unlocked, there is some retracing of your steps. I loved the interconnectivity of the world and how there are multiple ways to access different; areas in a deep rich map.

Alwa's Legacy gets a lot of things right from gameplay, visuals, sound, level design, and just that it's a fun game. Like any action-adventure game, there is, levelling and finding new powers along your journey. It does a great job of being flexible, and you can power up as you see fit. I enjoyed the variety between action, platform and puzzle mechanics in the game. I never got bored; the story, while nothing helps push forward your existence in the world. World and level design are superb the world; consists of a maze of interconnected dungeons with new creatures in new areas of the world. The retro pixelated style gives the game a real glossy and nostalgic feel. It's a superbly developed game that gets all the game mechanics just right and feels great to play.
