Souno’s Curse is a 2D hand-drawn platformer. However, a more thorough description is that it’s metrodivania-esque, a heavily puzzle-based game, and a challenging game in a beautifully drawn world. I think this sums up the game in more detail and very well.

My first impressions of the game were moments of awe; the 2D art style is imposing and draws you into this world. A tutorial, too, will give you the basic movements and actions you can perform, which are limited, to begin with but extend as you navigate through each unique area. Another element I loved was that areas that weren’t accessible until you gained a new skill or power-up are visible and give you a sense that exploring the world is critical in the game. This puzzle/platform element helps players discover more of the world and travel off the beaten path. While this is a tiny element, I want to progress through the levels and return to uncover more items in each area.

The main two game mechanics are the platforming and attacking elements; the platforming elements are harsh and do get tougher through each stage, so if you aren’t a fan of dying a lot, this may frustrate you. I died a lot, and I got frustrated but found myself coming back again and again. The fighting is basic: a kick and a magic attack, kick in the face and throw magic, rinse and repeat; it does the trick. The platform and puzzle elements are the actual stand-out elements in the game. There is enough challenge to make you; also, a lack of a map makes it even more challenging and requires you to use more of that brain power. Mixed with various enemies, from archers to floating bodies to distract, will add to the difficulty.

Underneath it all is a touching story that ties the world together and your journey through it. The backgrounds are stunning, and the NPCs add humour and life to the game and help bring the story to the fore. I loved the boss fights, which helped to mark the end of a level and progression to a new area and additional skills.

Souno’s CCuree is a fantastic game that combines art style, story, and mechanics in a fabulous bundle. There is a beautiful world to discover and tons of challenges. The Metroidvania elements help to draw you into this world and will make you come back again and again. I know some gamers will find the exclusion of a map a poor choice, but I understand it from the game’s perspective to promote discovery and make you search the world and see the wonder. A fantastic platformer!

Overall: 9/10
