Paper Perjury is a point-and-click detective game. This game was developed and published by Paper Cat Games. Paper Perjury is similar to games like Ace Attorney. This review was done on Windows, but the game is also available for Linux and macOS.

Paper Perjury is a single-player game where you play as Justina Smith, a newly hired Azure City Police Department paper clerk. Justina ends up assisting two police detectives who are uncovering the mistake in a witness’s taped testimony as they work on filling out the paperwork for a case related to the Eubank family. What was initially thought to be a robbery scene was later found to turn into a murder investigation. It is up to Justina and her fellow detectives to work together to find the truth behind the mysteries that begin to uncover.

The controls for Paper Perjury are extremely simple, as most of the controls are text interaction and point-and-click. A lot of the information collected and the highlighted tabs are found at the bottom of the game, where you can easily interact.

Paper Perjury features a pixel art style that adds a cosy, charming feel to the game, almost resembling old classics. The detail added in the pixel visuals creates great character expressions and animations that pair nicely with the storytelling. I personally really enjoyed how expressive the characters are and their unique characteristics. The characters have several animations that work so effortlessly to express what the character is trying to say. Certain dialogues will get the characters to change their actions, for instance, standing still to scratching their head. More details are added to the characters themselves rather than the locations, which I think is perfectly fine because the visual narrative is done seamlessly. The visuals are paired perfectly with the sound effects. The sound effects for the dialogue almost sound like a quirky typewriter, or you can hear the sound of slamming items. The music that is played throughout the game is very nice, even though it does not vary. You’ll hear retro EDM-style music, which has very catchy tunes.

The gameplay for Paper Perjury is interesting to take on hand. There are five cases where you can undergo investigation segments that allow you to gather statements and evidence regarding the specific case. Collecting the evidence is easy enough as you can point and click with the environment to obtain anything important. The game’s UI is very important as you can access everything collected and use it to figure out what is needed next (a checklist is provided for progression). You also have the ability to gather information by talking with a witness and collecting their statements. Several options are provided to the player to help further develop the story and collect intel. I liked that you have the ability to review statements and choose if you would like to go against anything said.

After you have collected the necessary evidence and information, your key suspects are brought to the police station to be questioned, and it is up to you to prove whether they are the true suspects. I really enjoyed how these investigating sequences felt like you were performing them in real life. You get the opportunity to question your suspect for whatever reason in order to unveil any important information. The game gets you to review evidence, and question suspects until you find the right suspect. Personally, I found the story to be very engaging, and character interaction through dialogue is extremely effective, but there seems to be no downside in your investigation process. You would presume that taking too long to question or collect evidence with no real purpose would give you some sort of penalty, except it doesn’t. I wish this had been slightly changed, as the game has no downside but is more casual. However, I would say this is what makes this detective game different from others. You work at your own pace, gathering whatever you find and questioning suspects however you like without worry.

I would say that in some cases, there were times when I had no idea how to progress onwards, even with the help of the checklist, which made things a bit difficult. I was genuinely stuck because I had found myself looking through evidence and statements several times in order to find the one dialogue line I needed to move forward. Overall, the game is enjoyable and intriguing as the narrative keeps the player wanting to discover the truth.

Paper Perjury is an interesting detective game that wants you to uncover the truth behind a disguised robbery case. You play Justina, who works alongside two police detectives to gather evidence and collect testimonies/statements from suspects to solve the mystery. The game features expressive pixel visuals with a compelling story that will keep you on your toes. It takes a lot of paperwork to try to solve the truth, so be sure to check out Paper Perjury!

Overall: 8/10
