Off The Rack #106

Monday, September 3, 2018

It’s Labour Day but hot and muggy weather is hanging on here in Ottawa. Our fishing trip yesterday morning was delayed by a road block on our way to the lake. Matt’s GPS app on his phone saved us a lot of time by directing us around the accident, otherwise I would have had to drive all the way back to the main highway to go through Carleton Place instead of coming back out in Almonte and continuing on our way. It was a tight U-turn on the two lane with metal barriers on both sides just off the shoulders of the road. I was impressed that my Honda CR-V managed to do the 4 point turn with the boat and trailer on. Fishing was really slow after we got going. I have a feeling that the lake is being fished out. We didn’t even get bites in places where we usually catch fish. We were shut out for over an hour but we finally did catch some. I have noticed that there aren’t as many other boats on the water in the last few trips and maybe it’s because other fishermen haven’t caught anything and are not coming back. That should help the stocks to recover. I suspect some people of not following the size and catch limits which sucks for the rest of us law abiding fishermen.

scarlet1

Scarlet #1 – Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Alex Maleev (art & colours) Josh Reed (letters). It’s been over two years since we’ve seen this book on the racks and a lot has changed. The revolution is in progress. New readers can jump right in and understand what’s happening but I think it’s a whole lot better if you read the story right from the start since it revolves around the leader and you really need to know her motivations to get the big picture. Scarlet is a character that sticks in your head.

x23_3

X-23 #3 – Mariko Tamaki (writer) Juann Cabal (art) Nolan Woodard (colours) VC’s Cory Petit (letters). Two Birthdays and Three Funerals part 3. We find out what the Stepford Cuckoos want with Gabby. Can Laura save her sister in time? If you were a fan of Orphan Black I think you’ll really like this book.

marveltwoinone9

Marvel Two-In-One #9/LGY #109 – Chip Zdarsky (writer) Ramon K. Perez (art) Frederico Blee (colours) VC’s Joe Caramagna (letters). It’s the reappearance of the Fantastic Four but not the FF that we all know and love. Not to worry, the real FF will not be far behind given the surprise appearance on the last page.

runaways12

Runaways #12 – Rainbow Rowell (writer) Kris Anka (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) VC’s Joe Caramagna (letters). This issue is about love and reunions. It’s not all rainbows and butterflies though. What happens between Victor and Gert and Nico and Karolina is sure going to complicate the future especially after another lost team mate shows up on the last page.

thesilencerannual1

Silencer Annual #1 – Dan Abnett (writer) Jack Herbert (art) Hi-Fi (colours) Tom Napolitano (letters). Putting out an annual for this new title after only 8 issues is an indication that Silencer/Honor is a hit for DC. It’s a nice little origin story that establishes Honor’s relationship with Talia al Ghul. Batman is the lure to get you to pick this up off the racks but the big fight with a Bane clone was very disappointing.

huntforwolverine_deadends1

Hunt For Wolverine: Dead Ends #1 – Charles Soule (writer) Ramon Rosanas (art) Guru-eFX (colours) VC’s Joe Sabino (letters). I started to read the four Hunt For Wolverine minis but only found Iron Man and Daredevil’s teams’ hunt interesting enough to finish. Kitty’s team in Madripoor and Sabretooth’s team in zombie town didn’t offer much intrigue. Here we have a wrap up with Kitty summarizing the clues gathered leading to Wolverine’s whereabouts and more importantly introducing a new super villain and her organization. Her name is Persephone and she heads up Soteira. She has control of Wolverine and is using him for evil. Return of Wolverine #1 hits the racks September 19. Hopefully, we’ll see if he breaks free.

exterminaton2

Extermination #2 – Ed Brisson (writer) Pepe Larraz (art) Marte Gracia (colours) VC’s Joe Sabino (letters). We have Ahab the mutant hunter wanting to kill the young X-Men while a young Cable wants to abduct them. No motive has been provided for these two bad guys. Kitty tries to use the same tactic she did for the Hunt For Wolverine and wants to split up Scott, Jean, Warren and Hank between four teams to keep them safe. Scott’s being a big baby. Jean goes with Domino’s crew. Warren falls victim to Kid Cable. Meanwhile Bobby/Iceman is missing. Hank’s in deep doo doo on the last page which means I’ve got to read the next issue in two weeks.
