Haruka is a normal teenage boy with a massive crush on his class rep: Akiho. One day he gathers up the courage to ask her out and to his amazement – she said yes. Now the two are dating and getting to know one another. However it isn’t long before he discovers that Akiho is a bit more ‘forward’ than what he expected. Instead of discovering one anothers hobbies and interests, Akiho is adamant in knowing what Harukas’ favorite sexual desires are! Thus begins the romantic comedy of Shobitch.

‘My Girlfriend is Shobitch’, is certainly an ‘interesting title and one that needs a slight explanation. The word ‘Shobitch’ is slang in Japanese for ‘shójo bitchi’. The Japanese title of this series is ‘Boku no Kanojo ga Majime Sugiru Shōjo Bitchi na Ken’. It’s literal English translation would read it as ‘The story (na ken) of my girlfriend (boku no kanojo) is that she’s an absolutely serious (majime-sugiru) slutty girl (shōjo bitchi).’ This alone should give you a good indication as to who they are aiming this show at.

Therefore this anime is definitely one for the grown ups due to the immense use of sexual innuendos’, adult humor and horny female characters. That’s not to say though, that it wasn’t a bad watch. Aimed at a ‘mature audience due to the sexual jokes and scenarios, behind it all was actually a somewhat good story. With a cast of interesting characters, each with their own ‘fleshed out lives and troubles. From ‘clingy sisters to lude thinking teenage girls, to pure minded naive students. It was an interesting mix, but then we had Akiho. A character that reminds me so much of Yuki Nagato in ‘The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya’. Perhaps just in her looks and demeanor, her attitude however was brazen and totally unexpected. It isn’t until near the end of the show do we understand just how she turned out this way. Although she is devoted to being the best girlfriend to Haruka, sexually. She is a young teenage girl at the end of the day in her first relationship. Blushing at the thoughts of holding hands, sharing an umbrella and even making lunch for him.

‘My Girlfriend is Shobitch’, debuted as a manga series back in 2015 by mangaka Namiru Matsumoto. It ran for 8 volumes and finished it’s run in 2019, with Kadokawa Shoten handling the publishing. As far as I am aware, it never got an english translation. This anime adaptation hit screens in 2017 and was a joint collaboration between two anime studios: Diomedéa and Studio Blanc. Diomedéa is probably best known for animating ‘Squid Girl’, ‘Problem Children Are Coming from Another World, Aren’t They?’ and ‘Domestic Girlfriend’. Whilst Studio Blanc has done so few titles, with ‘Ro-Kyu-Bu!’ being one of the only titles they have also produced. However they are currently animating ‘Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan’ which is currently airing this season.

‘My Girlfriend is Shobitch’ is a short series of just 10 episodes with an OVA. It’s a good show if you just want something easy to watch on your own, enjoy the odd dirty joke and still want some bit of romantic comedy in your viewing. Although this show mightn’t be to everyone’s taste, it probably is not one you will go back too often to rewatch either but it will have its own following. Worth checking out if you need some mid week filler in your anime schedule.

Overall: 6/10
