Moomintroll: Winter Wrath Review

Developer: Hyper Games

Platforms: PC (Reviewed), Switch, Switch 2

Genre: Adventure, RPG

Publisher: Kakehashi Games

Moomintroll: Winter Wrath is a cosy story-driven adventure game inspired by the beloved Moomin universe. The game was developed by Hyper Games and published by Kakehashi Games. This review was done on PC, but the game is also available on Nintendo Switch.

The game begins with Moomintroll suddenly waking from hibernation after a violent winter storm interrupts the peaceful silence of Moominhouse. His parents remain asleep while strange events begin unfolding around him, windows burst open, a squirrel dashes away into the cold, and the comforting warmth of home starts fading. What follows is a heartfelt winter adventure where Moomin must prepare the great winter bonfire by gathering firewood, inviting guests, helping magical winter beings and restoring warmth to a frozen world.

What makes the narrative work so well is how innocent and comforting it feels. There is no forced drama or overwhelming danger hanging over the player. Instead, the story focuses on kindness, helping others and discovering the beauty in the cold. It genuinely feels like stepping into a moving children’s storybook, but it still carries enough atmosphere to appeal to older players, too.

The game also stays loyal to the original Moomin books and TV adaptations. Fans will notice direct references, familiar faces and dialogue that feels perfectly in line. Even if you are not deeply familiar with Moomin lore, the world still feels welcoming and magical.

One of the strongest aspects of Moomintroll: Winter Wrath is how approachable it is. The controls are simple and intuitive, making the game easy to settle into. On the keyboard, most actions are mapped comfortably. I could also easily imagine this game feeling fantastic on a controller because of its slower pace and cosy atmosphere.

Gameplay revolves around exploration, light puzzle solving, and completing quests for the many winter creatures you encounter. None of the mechanics feels overly complicated, which works perfectly for the type of experience the game wants to create. Instead of difficult combat or stressful survival mechanics, the challenge comes from exploration and figuring out how to help others.

Moomintroll gradually unlocks new tools and upgrades throughout the adventure. One mechanic I especially enjoyed was the glove that lets you throw snowballs to break icicles and clear paths. Later, you gain a shovel that you can dig through thick snow, or an axe used to break icebergs/wooden planks, which also lets you open access to new locations and secrets. There are also collectables, side quests, and optional conversations scattered throughout each area. Every location feels worth exploring because there is always another charming interaction or quirky character waiting nearby.

Visually, the game is absolutely gorgeous. Everything had this soft, hand-drawn aesthetic that genuinely feels just like the Moomin books. The snowy landscapes glow with gentle lighting, character animations are expressive and adorable, and the entire world feels comforting despite the harsh winter setting. The winter atmosphere is honestly one of the best parts of the game. Snow-covered forests, ice pathways, and frozen lakes all create this magical sense of quiet isolation. Hyper Games absolutely nailed the feeling of wandering through a peaceful winter night.

The audio design deserves just as much praise. The soundtrack uses soft string instruments and calming melodies that perfectly fit the slower pacing. You constantly hear subtle environmental sounds too, creaking wood, distant crows, footsteps crunching through snow and icy winds drifting through the environment. These little details add so much immersion. What I loved most was how the music never felt repetitive or intrusive. Tracks blend naturally into each environment and help reinforce the emotional tone of the story. The game simply feels cosy from beginning to end.

The overall gameplay structure is straightforward but surprisingly engaging. The main goal is to help different winter beings so they can eventually gather around the bonfire together. Quests range from gathering food and finding lost objects to playing hide-and-seek. Every character you encounter feels unique, with quirky dialogue and charming interactions that make even simple objectives entertaining. The writing has a light-hearted sense of humour throughout, which helps keep the pacing relaxing and enjoyable. The game lasts around six to seven hours, which honestly feels perfect for this kind of game. The majority of the game is quite calm and does not really pose as a challenge, which may be underwhelming for some; however, it’s still enjoyable no matter who is playing.

I really liked playing Moomintroll: Winter Wrath. It is one of those games that simply feels comforting to play. From the soft visuals and relaxing soundtrack to the wholesome story and loveable characters, everything works together beautifully to create a calming experience. The game reminded me a little of games like Winter Burrow, especially with its snowy exploration. Explore enchanting winter areas, completely heartfelt quests and experience the warmth hidden within the cold. Be sure to check out Moomintroll: Winter Wrath.

Overall: 8.5/10
