Maverick’s Paper Planes Sells Out

MAVERICK’S PAPER PLANES IS SOLD OUT!

Reprint Lands December 2023

As one of the most critically acclaimed YA OGNS of 2023, PAPER PLANES– by Eisner award-winning author Jennie Wood (Flutter, A Boy Like Me) with art by Dozerdraws (The Last Session), and letters by Micah Myers (Needle and Thread)– has completely sold out and looks forward to a reprint arriving December 2023.

The book has arrived to a chorus of praise, including that of Booklist, which shared in a starred review: “Creators Wood and Dozerdraws are, like Dylan, both nonbinary, adding empathic, multilayered nuance to their exceptional collaboration.”

Paper Planes’ writer, Jennie Wood, said, “My heart swells with gratitude seeing the connection that early readers have formed with Paper Planes. The thoughtful reviews have reinforced the importance of telling queer stories that go beyond stereotypes. I hope that Paper Planes continues to resonate with readers and is a reminder that we all deserve to be celebrated and loved for who we are.”

Illustrator DozerDraws echoed Jennie’s sentiments: “I am so proud to have been part of the team that created a queer coming of age story that has been so well received by early readers and critics. Seeing people connect with the characters and their struggles shows that there is a need to tell stories like this and I’m hoping for Paper Planes to inspire readers and to make them feel seen and loved and proud of who they are.”

Full Book Summary: High schoolers Leighton Worthington and Dylan Render have always been inseparable, but when they’re both shipped off to a summer camp for troubled youth in the aftermath of a tragic event, their lifelong friendship is put to the test.

Neither ‘chose’ to be there, but they’ll need a positive evaluation from the camp to avoid being sent away, so they can continue attending high school with their friends.

The challenges of camp pushes the once-inseparable Dylan and Leighton onto personal journeys of self-discovery that force them to re-examine the incident that threatens their futures, explore the friendship they have shared for so long, and discover the type of person each of them truly wants to be.

Featured in The New York TimesBoston Globe, and on Law & Order: SVU, Flutter was named one of the best LGBTQ graphic novels of 2013 and 2015 by The Advocate. In November 2018, Dark Horse Comics published The Flutter Collection, all three volumes combined into one book. That collection won the Next Generation Indie Book award for best graphic novel. Jennie Wood Quote:

“Paper Planes has been a gift,” they said. “The project gave me the opportunity to explore an intense grade school friendship soon after I found out that a close childhood friend of mine passed away. Grade school friendships have a unique place in our lives, I think in part because those relationships rarely survive the transition to high school. This story is about that more innocent time, the time right before high school, right before everything changes.”
