Summary:
The issue starts off with a deep blue sea descent into the depths, below the surface. The story starts off with an excavation crew that has one goal: to find a rift between the surface and another dimension, only to run across the giant robot of Hellboy.
Hellboy, in this version, has his consciousness uploaded to a huge, giant Mecha robot. Hellboy has upgraded to a robot, and it’s fun to see the mecha robot move around, thrashing its arms against a purple seaweed monster. The choice of using mecha Hellboy in a sea fight was a fun choice, and many of the pages focus on sparse dialogue but simply fight scenes between the mecha and the monster. The monster itself looks like a combination between a kaiju and a sea creature.
The issue ends with robot Hellboy finding a green ring that resembles a source of power, or a crystal. This read felt short but action-packed. I am looking forward to reading the conclusion in issue two.
Duncan’s art is closer to the traditional superhero-house style, instead of the tri-colors that Mignola uses in his style. The lettering by Clem Robins pops out at you and does not distract from the action scenes and grim monsters that live undersea. It’s fun to read, and a light read that’s easy to breeze through, thanks to the tight story by Mignola. I think readers who are already accustomed to Hellboy’s gothic world will like the change of pace in this issue.
