With the Kickstarter campaign live for The Marvel Art of Tyler Kirkham, we are delighted to be joined by artist Tyler Kirkham. Tyler has worked on numerous comics, including Ultimate Fantastic Four, X-Men: Phoenix Warsong, and New Avengers/Transformers and created the cover art for many series such as Amazing Spider-Man, Star Wars: Crimson Reign and Venom.
Hi Tyler, it’s so great to have you here with us.
With the announcement of The Marvel Art of Tyler Kirkham, how do you feel?
I’m super excited to get this art book out! Clover press and I have been talking for a couple years now and it’s really come down to me getting them the materials for the book. I’m so glad it’s finally happening! It’s turning out better than I could have imagined too! I’ve done so much work for Marvel over the years and I think this is the perfect showcase for it.Â
Do you have a favourite Marvel character?
Wolverine is definitely my favorite Marvel character. Always has been and probably always will be!Â
Is there a particular project at Marvel Comics that you hold dear to your heart?
I think the best answer for this is my Venom cover run. I was consistently doing Venom covers for a few years and I kind of got known for it. In fact I was even invited to panels discussing Venom at conventions. That’s why I wanted Venom featured on this art book cover!Â
As an artist, has your approach to creating art changed?
Things are always changing and evolving! I’m always trying to grow. I took a big leap years ago when I decided to ink myself. It allowed me to incorporate more mixed media in my work. Ink wash and colored pencil shading and such. I’ve also learned to draw digitally in the last few years which I do from time to time. However my approach and method of drawing traditionally is still the same.Â
What can fans expect from The Marvel Art of Tyler Kirkham?
A very good variety of characters and covers! As well and some interior work and behind the scenes looks at prelims, pencils and inks. Stuff you don’t normally get to see. I’ve had the chance to draw so many Marvel characters and a lot of them will be featured in this book!Â
Can you tell us about the Kickstarter rewards for The Marvel Art of Tyler Kirkham?
I can say there will be a limited chance at remarque sketches, special prints and trading cards. As well as other unique items like a custom puzzle! Plus more. Definitely check it out.Â
