With the upcoming release of The Forever Home #1 from Oni Press on September 9th, we are delighted to be joined by Christian Ward. Christian Ward is a multi-Eisner-winning comic book creator.
Hi Christian, it’s so wonderful to have you here with us.
Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?
I’m Christian Ward, I’m a multi Eisner award-winning comic book creator from the UK. I’ve been working for almost 2 decades primarily as an artist but for the last 6 years I’ve been moving into writing more. I’ve drawn titles such as Black Bolt, Spectregraph, Invisible Kingdom and ODY-C, whereas i’ve written Two Face, Batman City of Madness and Event Horizon.
Can you tell us about the origins of The Forever Home?
As a father of two young children I, like many parents, am preoccupied by the thought of the future they are inheriting. As parents all we want to do is keep our kids safe. For Forever Home it was the idea behind the house that came first. I was thinking about billionaires’ climate bunkers, which lead to thinking about a house built to withstand climate change but ending up being immune to time itself. The story spun itself from those two points. The rich’s reaction to climate change and a parent’s desire to protect their own.

Who is Henry D’mour?
He’s the Musk, the Zuckerberg of our world. An infamous but genius architect who created the Forever Home. He could have saved the world but instead he chose only to save himself and his family.
What can you tell us about the D’mour family?
They’re written to feel very grounded and relatable but also they represent society in many ways. In this story we have a family, including two children, that are trapped in a crisis caused by an adult’s decisions. The parents represent the older generation. And the children, the younger. Lots of the book’s drama comes from the tension between those two generations.

What made Sami Kivelä the right artist for The Forever Home?
Sami has a style that is perfect for the midcentury futurist vibe of the book. Retro but also forward facing. Beyond that Sami handles physical space and the sense of time beautifully with his bold and inventive layouts. I wrote this book for him. No one could have done a better job.
How did Oni Press get involved with The Forever Home?
I’ve been impressed with Oni for years. I’m a huge Scott Pilgrim fan and their output in the last 3 years has been brilliant. I met with Sierra Hahn, Oni’s brilliant editor in chief, back at NYCC 2023 and we instantly hit it off and realised we had a similar sensibility when it came to comics. The Forever Home just left like a good fit and I’m thrilled to say that it was. Working with Oni has been wonderful.

How long have you been working on The Forever Home?
I’ve been working on the idea of the book for about 5 years, but it was greenlit by Oni at the end of 2024, so it’s been in active production since early 2025. Me and Sami have been sitting on the best work of our careers for what feels like a long time, so I’m excited for people to finally be able to read it.
Can you tell us about the world in which The Forever Home is set?
It’s very much our world just turned up to 11.

What can you tell us about The Forever Home?
It’s thrilling. It’s exciting. It’s tense. It’s horrific and maybe just maybe it might make you cry.
