Two orphaned brothers, Joshua (Ron Melendez) and his younger brother Eli (Daniel Cemy), who were connected to the murderous cult led by the children of the rural town of Gatlin Nebraska, are brought to the city of Chicago to live with their newly adoptive parents; William (Jim Metzler) and Amanda Porter (Nancy Lee Grahn). As Joshua starts to get used to his new surroundings, he starts to feel more distant towards his younger brother, as Eli begins to show his distaste towards those living a more modern lifestyle in the city of Chicago. Due to Eli’s distaste of his new surroundings, he summons the demonic entity known as; ‘He who walks Behind the Rows’, which therefore causes all hell to break lose, as mysterious gory deaths starts to occur, when Eli begins to recruit the local children living in Chicago to join his newly murderous cult, to carry on what had once begun in his hometown of Gatlin, by bringing the mayhem to the urban setting of Chicago.

‘Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995)’ is the third instalment in the ‘Children of the Corn’ horror film series, which was based on a short story by Steven King. This movie opens with a violent chase scene in the cornfields of the town of Gatlin, Nebraska, where a drunken man threatens his son Joshua (portrayed by actor Ron Melendez) with a beating, which ends in a most gruesome death scene, setting up what we can except to see for the rest of the movie. With the death of Joshua’s father, both Joshua and his younger brother Eli (Daniel Cemy) are adopted by both William (Jim Metzler) and Amanda Porter (Nancy Lee Grahn) and are taken out of the rural town of Gatlin, Nebraska to the urban setting of the city of Chicago. To Eli’s distain and despite the rough start to their new life in the city of Chicago, Joshua starts to finally fit in with his other classmates through a game of basketball, which causes a rift between the two brothers. As the two brothers drift apart, Eli finds an old and abandoned factory near their new home, to summon the demonic entity also known as ‘He who Walks Behind the Rows’, by giving him an offering of the corn, he brought with him from his hometown of Gatlin. Through throwing the seeds on the spoiled soil, it results in the corn growing mysteriously fast despite being on the worst soil, which becomes very valuable to their newly adopted father William Porter (Jim Metzler), as Eli reassures him that it could make him and their newly family filthy rich. Their newly adopted mother Amanda Porter (Nancy Lee Grahn), starts to become suspicious and baffled by Eli’s strange behaviour and these suspicions soon becomes apparent to both Joshua and his new found friends, when Eli begins to recruit their classmates to become part of his new murderous cult, in carrying out the demon’s bidding.

From this movie’s opening, we witness Joshua’s (Ron Melendez) previous home life, through seeing how terrified he was of his drunken father, which will help the audience to sympathise with his character and therefore root for him. Joshua seems more normal than his younger brother Eli, as Joshua starts to both fit in with his new classmates and wear his new clothes rather than what he wore before, therefore showing that his character can adapt to change. This is not the case for his younger brother Eli (Daniel Cemy), who seems to dislike his new surroundings and the people in them. Eli starts to show from the very beginning of the film, that he doesn’t want to change and is more powerful than he’s letting on, as he seems to secretly have the power of telekinesis, as he was able to knock off a glass statue with ease, which was impossible as it was further away from him. Eli is a very unlikeable character due to the threatening nature he hides behind his innocent face. The characters of both William (Jim Metzler) and Amanda Porter (Nancy Lee Grahn) are introduced as a warm and welcoming couple, as they try their best to make sure both Joshua and Eli feel loved. Mr and Mrs Porter seem to be very in love and are happy to have children to be part of their newly build family, but for Amanda Porter, her opinion soon changes, when she starts to feel threatened by Eli, due to his bizarre behaviour making her feel uncomfortable around just him. William Porter’s character seems to be oblivious to his wife’s concerns about Eli, as her husband becomes more occupied with trying to profit off of the mysteriously fast grown and invulnerable to disease corn.

I truly enjoyed ‘Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995)’ and dare I say I rather this sequel to its previous films, as I felt this had a more intriguing plot and I was pleased that the filmmakers decided to change the setting, by having it moved out of the rural town of Gatlin to the urban city of Chicago, as it brought a nice change of pace, with new faces brought in to be recruited, than the movie sticking with only all Amish like characters that was mainly used in the previous instalments. I enjoyed all of the innovative kills in the movie even the ridiculous cringe worthy ones. I loved the innovative kill, that involved a man having his limbs torn apart and his eyes and mouth being sewn shut, as I felt it was brilliantly executed and had made an impact on me, due to it being the first kill, therefore causing me to feel intrigued to see what the other kills will look like throughout the film. I loved the gore used in the scene, where a head is cracked open and split down in the middle and also a scene where another character’s head was pulled off from his body. The two death scenes that came to mind, that were hilariously cringe worthy, was firstly a death scene of a beloved character, where she got impaled by a broken pipe, which would of been effective , if it wasn’t obvious that it was a dummy, due to the hilarious image of her open mouth making an everlasting shocked expression. The other cringe worthy death scene, which was really the only negative aspect for me, was where a huge tentacle looking monster bursts from the ground and starts to eat the kids, which would have been chilling, if you couldn’t clearly see the monster eating a miniature doll version of the actors, which I felt took away from the sort of realism of that scene.

I highly recommend watching ‘Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995)’, due to its supervising twist and blood splattering innovative kills, that were both brilliantly executed and sometimes humorous, making this film an entertaining watch. The actor Daniel Cemy who played the main character of Eli, had portrayed this evil character perfectly, from he’s innocent expression to his threatening mannerisms, that makes his character intriguing to watch, to see what extreme measures he will take, to please the demonic entity from whom he calls ‘He Who Walks Behind the Rows’. ‘Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995)’, is the first in the ‘Children of the Corn’ film series to be made under Dimension Films and Miramax and the first to be released direct to video. This movie was also the film to start the careers of Buffy the vampire slayer actor, Nicholas Brendon, who had an unaccredited role, as one of the basketball players and the actress Ivana Milicevic who portrayed Riley Finn’s wife Samantha Finn and US military agent in Buffy the vampire slayer, had an unaccredited role in this film as Acolyte, a follower of Eli. The most noteworthy actress to appear in ‘Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995)’ as their first film is the American – South African actress Charlize Theron, who had an unaccredited and non speaking role as one of Eli’s followers.

In order to save his career, a city tabloid journalist, John Garrett (portrayed by Terence Knox) travels to the town with his estranged son Danny (portrayed by Paul Scherrer), to uncover the mystery behind the gruesome murders of all the adults in the town of Gatlin. The locals of Hemingford and tabloid journalist John Garrett himself, are about to experience more than what they bargained for, when the children of Gatlin return secretly to the cornfield, where the character of Micah (portrayed by Ryan Bollman) has not only taken Isaacs place, by becoming the new leader of the cult, but has also been possessed by ‘’He who walks Behind the Rows’’, leading to yet again more gruesome murders being committed by the children, while also trying to recruit Danny in becoming an addition to their cult.

‘’Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice’’ (1992) is a direct horror movie sequel to the 1984 cult classic film ‘Children of the Corn’, which was based on a short story written by Steven King. This film opens with a chilling scene, as the decomposed bodies of the adults that were murdered in the previous film are found. The remaining surviving children, who were part of the cult, that worshipped a demonic entity, they named ‘’He who walks Behind the Rows’’ has now been taken from their hometown of Gatlin to its neighbouring town of Hemingford Nebraska, where the locals have willing adopted them, as they don’t believe that these children would have committed such gruesome murders. The film introduces us to our main protagonists, a city tabloid journalist, John Garrett (Terence Knox) and his estranged son Danny (Paul Scherrer) as they travel to the town of Hemingford, as John Garrett believes he needs to work on a compelling story about what had happened in the town of Gatlin, in order to save his journalism career. John soon becomes smitten by a bed and breakfast owner Angela Casual (Rosalind Allen), who has adopted one of the children named Micah. When returning to the cornfield, Micah (Ryan Bollman) becomes possessed by the demonic entity and has taken over as leader of the cult, which was previously owned by a child named Isaac, who was killed in the original film. Due to Danny having an estranged relationship with his father, as well as the fact that John seems to be more occupied with both Angela and with interviewing those within the town, Danny befriends a local orphaned girl named Lacey (Christie Clark).Bizarre deaths start to happen to some of the locals within the town, while Danny is potentially being drawn in by Micah to become a member of the cult.

The film sets up the dynamic between the main characters of the tabloid journalist John Garrett (Terence Knox) and his son Danny (Paul Scherrer), as the film explores their estranged relationship, as Danny expresses to his father, that he believes it is his father’s fault for the divorce, as Danny recalls that his father cared more for his job than he did for his own family. Danny feels as though his father has abandoned him, as his father is said to have barely remembered his own son’s birthday. The film also gives an insight into Danny’s home life with his mother, as he tells his father that he wasn’t going to his mothers wedding, as he hates he’s soon to be stepfather. This helps the audience to have sympathy for Danny’s character, as we get to know his background, which therefore justifies why he gives backhanded comments to his father throughout the film. Even though the character of John Garrett is unlikeable, in terms of how he had treated his son in particular in the past, by seeming as though he cares more about his work than anything, but the film makes you also have sympathy for him too, due to the scrutiny John faces from his former co workers, which is shown in a scene in the film, where John and his son meets John’s former co workers on the road coming from the town, where they humiliate John for making up stories, by never having any concrete evidence to back them up, making him a laughing stock in his field of work. The character of Micah (Ryan Bollman) is firstly introduced as a very quiet child, who has experienced trauma from the previous events, but as his character soon becomes possessed by the demonic entity in the cornfields, he becomes more outspoken and therefore takes over as leader of the cult. His character is quite unlikeable due to his evil nature, from leading the children to commit murder and him committing murder himself, but without condoning violence and strongly disagreeing with the phrase ‘’violence is the answer’’, I do understand where his anger is coming from and why he thinks the adults in the town are hypocrites, as he expresses to Danny, how Micah’s father told him that if he had an relationship before marriage, it will be deemed as sinful but this was unfair of him to say, as Micah quoted ‘’ I caught my father with the farmhand's wife... sinning most vigorously’’. This made Micah’s character quite persuasive, as by telling his story, he was able to have Danny believe his father is similar to Micah’s father, as Danny recalls his father telling him, not to get into an relationship with Lacey or befriend the other children, which Danny believes also, is hypocritical of his father to tell him who he can’t hang out with in the town, as his father has already become lovers with the local bed and breakfast owner Angela.

"COTC_II_v"

I truly enjoyed this film ‘Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice’, due to the innovative deaths displayed on screen, such as the movie referencing the Wizard of Oz, where a local woman is murdered by the children, as they sabotage the hydraulic jacks supporting her house, while she was underneath it, so this caused the house to crush her with only her legs being shown, which is slightly similar to the death of the Wicked Witch of the East in the Wizard of Oz. Another similarity to another film, I spotted was during the lead up to a death scene, where the demonic entity was not being shown in its true form but instead used thermal imaging, similar to the beginning of the 1987 Scfi – action film Predator, as thermal imaging was used in this film, to show that the demonic entity was following its next potential victims in the cornfields without them knowing. Another death scene I was impressed with was during a scene in a church, where one of the local men gets the bloodiest nosebleed I’ve ever seen, which causes him to bleed out to death, due to Micah stabbing a voodoo doll to make it happen. Reading about the making of this film, I appreciate any of the church scenes more, due to what the filmmakers went through making this film, as director David Price mentioned in the film’s DVD commentary, that when shooting the film, a local Christian group held not only a few small protests during the film , but had left a dead rodent on the director’s doorstep as a warning, so the film’s production team constructed their own church for a few scenes in the film and luckily despite the warning, no actual incidents occurred. The only negative aspect I have about this film, is that I felt the movie couldn’t make up its mind on what they wanted to be the reason behind the children becoming evil, as they didn’t specify if it was the supernatural aspect that the film was portraying all along, such as scenes where they show the true face of the demon and how a voodoo doll was used to cause a man to nosebleed to death, so it was confusing when they brought in a storyline where the corn was seen to be infected, making it hard to pinpoint which one is the cause, as nothing is ruled out.

I highly recommend watching ‘Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice’ (1992), especially if you are a fan of the original 1984 cult classic ‘Children of the Corn’, as the movie picks up straight after the events of the first film and doesn’t discard any plot points from the original film, therefore showing that the filmmakers appreciated what came before. I enjoyed this movie as a horror fan due to the innovative kills and finding out that the actress who played Lacey (Christe Clarke), was the same actress who portrayed Jesse’s 11 year old sister Angela Walsh in one of my favorite horror movies ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street 2:Freddy’s Revenge. ‘Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice’ (1992) is worth the watch, especially due to the film having been successful enough to spawn a further eight more straight to DVD sequels, that also included a 2009 television remake of the original film . The title of this film ‘Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice’ (1992) is hilarious to know that the filmmakers put the word final in its title, as horror fans know by now, that horror movies that have final in its title such as Saw 3D: The Final Chapter in 2010 or even Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter in 1984, we can all suspect there is more movies to come.

Overall: 7 /10
Starring: Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd, Liam Cunningham, Emma Cleasby

Directed by: Neil Marshall

Licensed by: Vertigo Releasing

Release Date: 4 K Digital restoration released on the 12th October 2020

In the Highlands of Scotland, six British soldiers on a training expedition, unexpectedly encounters a gruesome massacre of a group of special ops, with only one severely injured survivor remained by the name of Captain Richard Ryan (portrayed by Liam Cunningham), With Capt. In North Wales, two hours before the brutal attack of the couple in the woods, the film introduces us to our main protagonist Pvt. Cooper (portrayed by the British actor Kevin McKidd from Trainspotting, Grey’s Anatomy), who fails to join the special forces as he refuses an order by Capt. Richard Ryan (portrayed by Irish actor Liam Cunningham), to shoot an innocent dog in cold blood. Four weeks later in the Highlands of Scotland, six British soldiers including Pvt. Cooper are set out on a training exercise against a special Air Service unit. The six British soldiers led by Sgt. Harry G. Wells (portrayed by the English actor Sean Pertwee from Event Horizon, Gotham), establish a hilarious tight knit group dynamic through their crude and aggressive dialogue towards each other. These soldiers soon stumble towards a gruesome massacre of a group of special ops, with only one survivor left which is none other than Capt. Richard Ryan (Liam Cunningham). They are soon rescued by a zoologist named Megan (Emma Cleasby), who drives them to an isolated farmhouse located within the woods, where they would retreat until the full moon disappears at dawn, as they were aggressively attacked by a pack of werewolves, who had killed one of their soldiers but had only extremely wounded another, due to Pvt. Cooper helping the wounded soldier by not leaving him behind to die. .

"dogsoldiers_1"

The film’s main protagonist Pvt. Cooper (Kevin McKidd) is a likeable character from the start, due to his refusal of killing a dog in cold blood, which shows that he has a conscience and is someone who would not leave a man behind, which was prevalent when he helped a severely injured fellow soldier, knowing his life could of been endangered, which made his character someone to root for, due to his characteristics that make him a natural born leader with a heart. The character of Capt. Richard Ryan (Liam Cunningham) was an unlikeable character due to his cruel nature, as his character ordered Cooper to shoot an innocent dog and when Cooper refused to, we see Capt. Richard Ryan shoot the dog himself off-screen. Throughout the film Capt. Richard Ryan had no redeemable qualities, making his character potentially traitorous, through giving off a vibe as though he is hiding something for not disclosing his mission to the British soldiers, which might help them defeat the blood lusting werewolves. Overall the cast were brilliant in their roles and gave a performance that was memorable, as they delivered their dialogue perfectly, as the humour appeared natural and wasn’t forced, as they gave a real reaction to the mayhem that was going on around them.

I truly enjoyed this film as it kept me entertained throughout, due to the film’s action packed sequences in the isolated farmhouse, which were especially fun to watch, as we got to see the soldiers use their training to defend themselves. The gory death scenes will hopefully please fans of the body horror genre as well, due to the gruesome portrayal of blood, guts and intestines shown on screen. These action packed sequences and emotional scenes are very effective due to the film’s soundtrack that was composed by Mark Thomas. I also loved the references to other movies in the film, such as the reference to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead, through naming one of the soldiers Corporal Bruce Campbell (Thomas Lockyer), after the actor who played Ash in the Evil Dead franchise. Another reference I noticed was the character of Sgt. Harry G. Wells which was named after the author with the same initials who wrote the science fiction novel called ‘’The War of the Worlds’’ . Speaking of the character of Sgt. Harry G. Wells, I loved Sean Pertwee performance during a scene, where he had to be punched twice in order to be knocked out while they closed his wounds with Krazy glue, which was used during the Vietnam War to stop blood and close wounds. This scene was extremely hilarious to watch, due to reading that the actor Sean Pertwee not only got punched for real, but had taken on his role quite literally by having a few drinks before the scene, which made his portray of a drunken individual very convincing. I loved that they used practical effects instead of CGI as I’m not a fan of films that have CGI werewolves, as it brings me out of a film when it’s not done effectively. Two negative aspects about the film for me was that we didn’t get to witness a full werewolf transformation scene, as this film had a lower budget, but the filmmakers did their very best through having shown the transformation off-screen, as the film only shows the claws coming out before the full transformation, which I felt was still effective. I also felt that the plot twists in the movie were a bit predictable, but none the less I was still intrigued to find out, how it was all going to end.

"dogsoldiers_2"

I highly recommend watching Dog Soldiers (2002) as I guarantee you will be stuck to your seat from start to finish, from its hilarious dialogue, that is full of British humour and delivered by a great cast, to the intense action and gory deaths portrayed on screen, that will please both action movie lovers due to the film being action packed throughout and for horror movie fans who are there to experience the extremely gruesome kills.

Dog Soldiers has been titled a cult classic British horror movie, due to being directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) and also by having grossed £5 million at the box office when it was released 18 years ago in 2002.

Special Thanks to Vertigo Releasing, who has achieved multiple awards for their innovative campaigns for quality independent films, have now announced that the British horror cult classic film ‘Dog Soldiers’ is now been re- released digitally as a 4K restoration release on the 12th October 2020 with newly commissioned promotional artwork by legendary illustrator Chris Malbon.

Overall: 8 /10

Starring: Judah Lewis, Bella Thorne, Robbie Amell, Hana Mae Lee, Andrew B. This film takes the story into new directions with plot twists, which will make whatever doubts you had on this sequel fade, as I can honestly say that it exceeded my expectations.

"babysitter_killer_1"

The character of Cole (Judah Lewis) is still an easy to root for character in this sequel, as he was in the original, as the movie allows you to sympathies for Cole, due to him still being treated as an outcast, which many audiences watching can relate to. Cole’s character will soon have to face his fears, when he comes into close contact with those, who wants to try and kill him all over again. We are introduced to some new characters such as Phoebe (Jenna Ortega), the new girl at school, who is rumored to have killed her parents, which makes her character intriguing to watch, to see how Phoebe’s storyline ties into the overall plot. Along with new characters, we also have the triumphant return of Cole’s enemies, the ridiculously over the top satanic cult members, that includes the characters of Max (Robbie Amell), Allison (Bella Thorne), john (Andrew B. Bachelor) and Sonya (Hana Mae Lee). Each of these original satanic cult members fit back into their roles easily, and has fun with the material they are given. Other original cast members includes Cole’s next door neighbor Melanie (Emily Alyn Lind), who Cole is still smitten with since they kissed in the first movie, and she is the only one who understands him, as she too was a witness to the murders two years ago besides Cole. Surprisingly, we get more screen time of Cole’s parents, especially his father (Ken Marino), who portrays the awkward dad, who wants to be the fun loving father in front of his son, but also gives a performance, where you can clearly see the affection he has towards his son Cole. Nearly every scene Cole’s father is in is hilarious to watch, especially scenes he has with Melanie’s father.

I enjoyed this sequel as a follow up to ‘’The Babysitter’’ (2017), as it delivered for me yet again, due to how all the original characters got back into their roles with ease, by delivering some ridiculous but hilarious dialogue throughout the film, that made me laugh out loud. I loved the new character of Phoebe (Jenna Ortega), as she was a great addition to the cast, from her character’s introduction and to how her storyline ties into the movie. I believe that the actress ‘’Jenna Ortega ‘will be someone to look out for in the future, as this actress has been newly casted in Scream 5, which is to be released in 2022. The soundtrack to this film is awesome. There was a lot of pop culture references, from Terminator 2, which I felt was a nod to the director McG having directed ‘’Terminator Salvation’’(2009).

"babysitter_killer_2"

Babysitter: Killer Queen was truly an enjoyable fun watch, but had some bizarre moments in the film, that felt too stylistic for me, such as a fight scene that resembled an arcade fighting game and even some Scot Pilgrim vibes in there, that wasn’t needed, as it made the movie far less realistic. Another scene I first felt was out of place; was a dance scene, which came out of nowhere, but as I thought about it, I now get what that scene was symbolising within in the film but in the moment, I didn’t get it until looking back. The movie also went into detail of how the characters of Max (Robbie Amell), Allison (Bella Thorne), john (Andrew B. Bachelor) and Sonya (Hana Mae Lee) joined the demonic cult, which was shown very stylistically using camera footage, which added a nice touch to the look of the film. I loved how McG concluded this film, so I would be happy with them ending on this high note, but would welcome a third movie.

‘’The Babysitter: Killer Queen’’ (2020) is out now to stream on Netflix.

Before watching, make sure to watch the original ‘’The Babysitter’’(2017) also streaming on Netflix, as I reassure you, that you will be in for a ridiculously hilarious horror comedy, where both films will keep a smile on your face from beginning to end, with all the fun and gory innovative kills, us horror fans love to see on screen.

"kajillionaire_2"

Possibly one of the strangest movies that I’ve seen in a long while, ‘Kajillionaire’ is basically the story of a dysfunctional family/trio, using whatever means necessary to scrape through their daily existence. Even though the calibre of actors in the main roles; Debra Winger (Shadow Lands, Terms of Endearment), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water, Step Brothers) and Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld, Thirteen) is very high, it does feel a little bit rambly in places and you find yourself constantly wondering where the story is going to go. Evan Rachel Wood in particular is pretty much unrecognisable from the many roles we’ve seen her in in the recent past, which does stand to her talent as an actress.

I’m not entirely sure what kind of audience would enjoy watching ‘Kajillionaire’, though I’d say that it is possibly an indie movie lover’s dream.

"COCIII_v"

The soldiers soon realize that the vicious attackers are none other than a pack of blood thirsty werewolves.

‘’Dog Soldiers’’ (2002) is a cult classic British horror film, which is filled with tension from the very beginning, through witnessing a couple brutally murdered in the woods located in Scotland.

Two years has passed since Cole (Judah Lewis), survived and defeated a satanic cult lead by his Babysitter Bee. Cole, now a junior high school student, is still haunted by the horrific events of that night, alongside dealing with the fact that everyone thinks he’s crazy, as no evidence was found, to prove that Cole was telling the truth. Cole’s best friend Melanie (Emily Alyn Lind) convinces Cole to attend a party with her at a lake, so Cole can forget his past and have fun. Unlucky for Cole, he must once again outsmart the satanic cult, who unexpectedly returns from the dead.

Netflix’s The Babysitter: Killer Queen is an American horror comedy, that brings back what we all loved from its original movie, as this movie is filled with pop culture references and huge amounts of gore splattered onto our screens, yet again.

Whilst in the middle of lockdown, zoom calls become a common way of catching up with friends and family. Tonight is Haley’s turn to organise the weekly zoom meeting with her five friends. Tonight’s activity, apart from drinking and gossiping, is a séance. Although many are skeptical of the medium Haley hires, the evening begins to take a sudden turn for the worst when during the séance a demonic presence is invited into each of their homes. One by one, events start to unfold that will send a shiver down through anyone's spine. All of this takes place during the zoom call, as an uninvited guest makes their presence known.

"host_1"

Have you ever heard of someone making a really good horror film in just 12 weeks? It’s madness! Just three months to create a script, remotely train your actors through a virtual workshop so that they know how to not only film themselves acting out their lines, but do their own stunts, camera work, lighting and effects. Now that is pressure and the actors well and truly deserve that paycheck at the end of the day. The filming style reminds me somewhat of a modern take on the Blair Witch, but instead we have webcams and a group of friends remotely communicating from each of their homes. Now filming during this current global pandemic would usually be impossible, but that did not stop the crew, actors and director of ‘Host’ from pushing through and making this film. Honestly, it was entertaining. Terrifying in parts, and I actually had to watch something more ‘calming’ before going to sleep that night. It sent chills down my spin in several moments, from the medium disappearing, to going up into the attic. This is a great film to watch for those that love a good fright.

There is a good mix of personalities and lifestyles between this group of friends. From those that prefer to live life with an open mind, including the existence of the paranormal. To those that are more skeptical and have no problem in voicing their opinions loud & clear. Then we have those that decide that in order to add some drama to the night, they invent a story that is the lead cause to a demonic spirit crossing over and causing numerous murderous acts. You know, just your normal Friday night zoom call with the girls. Through this film we see friendships being tested and some coming to a sudden end as the evil entity goes on a rampage. Apart from the supernatural aspect, the character personalities, relationships and living situations are incredibly realistic and true to life. It makes it all the more frightening when the chaos begins.

From being to end, ‘Host’ has been a captivating watch. From a relatable script to the sudden change to a horror film. It ticks boxes across the entire film. It is also a fresh take on what is still a new aspect of filming, through using a webcam and allowing the actors to perform all their own camera work and stunts. As though it was an ‘amaeuter film’ but made to the highest degree. The film industry is ever changing and its fantastic to see what some can do even during a global lockdown.

Having graduated from the prestigious Tokyo University, Kazuhikos’ life has remained unchanged ever since he was in high school. With a lacklustre attitude towards life, he still resides in his childhood bedroom, living at home with his folks and has no job or career. However after attending a local bathhouse one night, he runs into a woman who remembers him from high school. Soon after Kazuhiko begins working at the same bathhouse, alongside a fellow new employee named Akira. With a new work routine and money in his pocket, Kazuhiko begins to enjoy his new lifestyle. That is, until he returns to work one night to discover that the bathhouse also runs as a murder grounds for the Yakuza.

"melancholic1"

I must admit, I highly enjoyed this film. Although it was only filmed in 2018, it had a classic feel to it that reminded me of older mob films from the 80s and 90s. The whole idea of using a bathhouse as a place to murder certain individuals was ideal and simplistic, as it will always be easy to clean and was less likely to come under suspicion by the authorities. I highly enjoyed that idea by the script writer. It’s not something I have seen before in film, but when I sit back and think about it - I’m amazed I haven’t come across it before. It’s a film well worth rewatching time and time again, also very easy to recommend to people. The overall plot was believable, well able to keep my attention and the acting was pretty good. Especially considering how Kazuhiko character begins to gradually develop.

"melancholic2"

So we begin with our lead actor Kazuhiko, whose enthusiasm towards life was heavily lacking. Even after attending the prestigious Tokyo University, which would have set him up for life if he were to apply himself to any company. He simply sat at home, he didn’t seem to get any grievances from his parents who seemed to just accept the situation for what it was. Perhaps this was Kazukio’s overall attitude his entire life, or maybe he was simply burnt out, I’m not rightly sure. Soon after he reconnects with high school classmate Yuri, he seems to push himself forward to getting a job at the bathhouse she visits. Thus he begins to have feelings towards her and soon enough they are seeing one another outside of the bathhouse. Kazuhiko’s life drastically changes even more when he uncovers the shadier side of the bathhouse. Shockingly he soon becomes involved in the whole business and even manages to put up a fight when it comes to staying involved. Truly Kazuhiko has an unusual sense of morals. We meet an interesting bunch of characters throughout this film, from those that live under the radar and have walked dangerous paths in life. To simple, hard working individuals like Kazuhikos parents and Yuri. It’s a dark humored comedy, with the beginnings of a sweet coming of age romance thrown in, but not forgetting the danger with the sinister Yakuza element.

So we have blood and gore, a number of gruesome deaths in a bathhouse, as well as knowing how they dispose of the bodies without any evidence. This single element is what I have an issue with, as the way they disposed of the bodies should have left a vulgar smell that would have been vented out of the building and noticed by the neighbourhood. This apparently wasn’t even an issue in the film and was never addressed. Moving on though the most action packed scene was certainly the skirmish on the staircase, well executed and we really did get to see the full set of skills that Akira possessed. And like all decent action films, there was the inevitable twist at the end. Making this a thoroughly enjoyable watch and one I would definitely return to in the future.

"host_2"

From being to end, ‘Host’ has been a captivating watch. From a relatable script to the sudden change to a horror film. It ticks boxes across the entire film. It is also a fresh take on what is still a new aspect of filming, through using a webcam and allowing the actors to perform all their own camera work and stunts. As though it was an ‘amaeuter film’ but made to the highest degree. The film industry is ever changing and its fantastic to see what some can do even during a global lockdown.

"kajillionaire_1"

I’m not entirely sure what kind of audience would enjoy watching ‘Kajillionaire’, though I’d say that it is possibly an indie movie lover’s dream.

"COCIII_v"

Having graduated from the prestigious Tokyo University, Kazuhikos’ life has remained unchanged ever since he was in high school.

"host_2"

From being to end, ‘Host’ has been a captivating watch. From a relatable script to the sudden change to a horror film. It ticks boxes across the entire film. It is also a fresh take on what is still a new aspect of filming, through using a webcam and allowing the actors to perform all their own camera work and stunts. As though it was an ‘amaeuter film’ but made to the highest degree. The film industry is ever changing and its fantastic to see what some can do even during a global lockdown.

"COCIII_v"
