YOUTH follows the turbulent lives of two teenage boys that run away from their small minded town in hopes of making it to California. Frank and River, two queer teens that fall for one another leave their troubled homes behind and drive untl they run out of gas. They soon come across other misfit teens, who welcome them into their group. The fun continues for this new gang of friends, as raging hormones are mixed with liquor and drugs. Soon tempers are flying and before they know it, they are being pursued by the cops. The madness continues, just when they think they have escaped with their lives - a cosmic blast changes these teens' lives forever!

Well every good superhero story has to start somewhere, usually the individuals are formed out of some kind of tragedy and that is exactly what has happened to this group of misfits. Speaking of, there are many similarities between this story and that of the UK sitcom Misfits. Both groups of wayward teens were struck with unusual powers, neither of which knew how best to use them and instead went instead for personal gain. In the later half of this volume, we see the horrifying consequences when one such superpowered individual gets hammered and starts throwing punches at civilians.

"youthvol1_1"

This series is just filled with countless twists and turns, there is never a calm moment. Its as though you got the cast of the TV show Misfits and put them in charge of establishing the X-Men - but first they have to fund it all through any means necessary. These teens are more like anti-heroes and are much more akin to the likes of Deadpool's personality. Look out for yourself and only those in your immediate circle. This is far from the end of YOUTH, as there is already a Season Two being published, which I will also be reviewing.

YOUTH was co created by author Curt Pires and illustrator Alex Diotto. Curt has had a very successful career as of late, as five out of his eight creator owned properties are now in development for TV and film, including YOUTH which has been licensed for Amazon Prime Video. The artwork is quite striking in a way that kind of reminds me of the rough sketches that are used for a storyboard during filming so everyone has an idea of how it will be shot. Some of the panels are quite crude at times, especially when it comes to facial expressions but it still manages to get the point & emotions across to the reader. This series doesn't need to rely on pretty drawings and perfect outlines, the story is more than enough to carry this through. Where it excels is in the scenarios it depicts, the chaos, car chases, drug filled parties and the horny teens making out. It is honestly a wild ride for a comic and its no surprise that it has been picked up for a live action series.

"youthvol1_2"

YOUTH is a modern coming of age series that follows a bunch of misfit teens that have been forgotten both by society and their families. We follow their lives as they go from parties, to drugs, alcohol and car chases. Only for them to be struck down by a cosmic power that totals their van but leaves them with unimaginable powers.

YOUTH Volume 1 is available to buy in physical print from Dark Horse Comics and online through comiXology.

Rena is a young pre-teen girl who suffers from social anxiety, which has made her daily school life quite difficult to handle. As an outcast within her class, her robotics engineer mother has been enrolling Rena in counselling sessions for a while now. None of which seemed to have made any difference for the girl, until one day it’s suggested she joins the local Ninja Club in order to socialize more. From here the story of Rena the Ninja begins, can she conquer her fears and become the Ninja of legend known as ‘The Ghost’?!

This is a great read for children and adults alike, as there is a bit of something for everyone to enjoy. Social anxiety is no joke and has become more apparent in the last year alone, with people experiencing some form of anxiety due to the current pandemic, with its social restrictions and lockdowns. So this book is the perfect medium to help those that may need to connect with a character that is going through somewhat similar difficulties, with a splash of ninja fun.

"shyninja1"

Now it’s not all fun and games, although Rena soon gets the hang of some classic ninja skills. Her instructor, the mysterious Dysart, has other plans. Having brought to her attention the legend of ‘The Ghost’, he convinces Rena that she is the one. This inturn did encourage the girl to battle her fears, but he also deceived her. It’s a very good plot twist, one that had some good action involved and some very clever deception. So what is Renas’ ultimate goal here? Apart from becoming the ninja of legend that is. She also wants to overcome her anxiety, be just a normal kid at school again and ultimately, be able to visit her best friend Sidney in person. Who has his own set of problems!

"shyninja2"

Now this story is a collaboration between real life father and daughter duo; Adara and Ricardo Sanchez. Within just the opening pages of this book, Ricardo included a very detailed foreword as to how this story was created. Which is quite touching to read before we get into the ninja action. The illustrations were handled by Arianna Florean, a comic book artist, illustrator and colorist. Who is currently working on a number of projects for Disney America, Marvel and IDW Publishing. The artwork in Shy Ninja has been pretty flawless. It reminds me of a lot of cartoons that came out in the early to mid 2000s, including Scooby Doo and Avatar the Last Airbender. With fun illustrations such as these, the facial designs are sometimes over the top but the reactions are just hilarious. It plays itself towards younger readers, but even as an adult I had great fun reading this book.

Haley and Max arrive on the footsteps of Wayfair Academy, a boarding school for teens with special needs. Life has been harsh for them thus far, especially after the passing of their mother. With no real family left to care for them, they have done all they can to stay together. Haley has been deaf since birth and Max has more or less turned into her bodyguard. Over a short period of time at the school, they begin to find a new family amongst the friends they have made. However after one such night when they decide to break into a teachers office in order to get their confiscated phone back, they begin to develop a taste for crime. The group begin planning their next heist when the future of one of their friends' education lies in the balance. They soon find out though they have stolen from the wrong person, as their ‘hobby’ now becomes the leverage this man needs to blackmail them into doing his dirty work. The plot develops even more, when the teens devise a plan to be rid of this criminal forever.

"pantomime_1"

Pantomime was a six issue series that debuted from Mad Cave just last November, and has now been compiled in this single tradeback volume. The series follows a group of deaf teens as they go about pulling off some impressive robberies, confident in their skills and the fact that they would be the least suspected individuals based on their disabilities. For a while there, they were pulling off the perfect crimes. Some of the ideas were immense and almost insane, yet they still managed to pull them off. The taste for the world of crime had soon become an addiction. They used whatever they stole to benefit their futures, because going by the family they had around them - they well and truly needed the help. Each member of this teenage cartel had their own unique skill set, from cracking safes to lock picking, others were even security hackers. However it only takes one bad egg amongst them to jeopardize the entire operation - and its always who you least expect.

Pantomime was created by Christopher Sebela, an American author and journalist that has a very lengthy CV and career to date. His work has been published by many comic giants in the industry, including Image Comics, DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, IDW and more. He has written many issues for established comic series, including Harley Quinn, Ghostrider, Hellraiser and more yet again. As well as writing his own pieces of work, including the Dumbstronaut series, he is also the co-founder of the indie collective publishing imprint - Two Headed Press. Alongside this very creative story, are the illustrations of David Stoll. A freelance comic artist from Arizona, USA, whose work can be sampled over on his website here - http://stollcomics.com/ Although there isn’t much information I could find on other published works he has contributed to, I am sure he has a line of interested people just filling up his inbox with the next job offer going by the success alone of Pantomime.

"pantomime_2"

This was such a thrilling series, that I am actually disappointed that it has come to its end, but it was done with elegance. It could be explored more, but they have certainly tied it off in a way that fans would still be satisfied with leaving the story there. You can currently buy each one of the 6 issue Pantomime series separately, or you can purchase the collected volume which will be available in print and digital through the link below. Also as always, do your best to buy from your local comic book store.

Alexia is the next in line to inherit ‘The Foundation’, an organisation that has regulated Superheroes and Villains into fighting in cage matches for the public's safety & entertainment. Although Alexia only wishes to be just a superhero, whose job is to solely help the weak and vulnerable. Her Father - Iron Head, has other plans for his daughter.

He plans on making her the next Iron Head, with a new look - one far from the physique she was born with. Not long after this ‘conversation’, the great Iron Head suffers a ‘fatal heart attack’. It is only on the day of his funeral, does Alexia meet her half sister Amy - Daughter of the late Villianis: Black Hand. Together they go through some family history, uncover The Foundation's secrets and try to uncover the reason that their father faked his own death. This and more twisted family secrets get revealed, but will the sisters still stick together for the greater good or will Alexia once again go back to her fathers side?

"bhihv2_1_6"

Volume 2 has just begun with single issues, which follows on from the explosion ending of Volume 1: Issue 5. The girls are now on the opposite side of the law, they still help civilians out whenever they can but are just constantly on the run now. Superheroes are now getting involved in politics, with one such hero now running for President! ‘The Hound’ has now handed himself into the police, but is faced with a different atmosphere than what he was expecting from the force. Just who could be behind it all? Whilst the sisters are still on the run and it looks like its not just the Police that is after them now!

"bhihv2_1_7"

‘Blackhand & Ironhead’ has a unique style of artwork, where the character designs remind me a lot of the Batman Animated series just for facial expressions, whereas the background of the city just on the first set of pages reminds me more of Futurama. Its an odd mix but it just struck me more as I was reading it. The character design for Alexia however does bring back memories of when I used to see Squirrel Girl making the odd appearance in the Marvel comics back in the early 2000’s. More of a ‘real woman’ shape to the character, nothing wrong with that! This girl can also throw a punch and stand her ground in a fight - now that I can respect! Anyway, artwork has been top notch, and it’s not only humans that feature in this story as we also have a dimensional villain as well that just resembles an alien looking Indian deity? Kind of hard to describe now that I put it into words. Then we have Amy who has a whole style of her own! Very original, punkish with a cracking attitude! This series was also originally published online on PanelSyndicate.com, with Image Comics now giving it its first print release.

So if you enjoy the likes of ‘Jupiter's Legacy’, then I would highly suggest checking out ‘Blackhand & Ironhead’. Volume 1 is currently available, which contains the entire five issues that made up that section. This review is of Volume 2: Issue 1, of what would be called ‘Season 2’. Both of which are available to buy directly from the link below. Also make sure to check out your local comic book shop for future issues! I’m interested to see how far this series will go and how it will ultimately end for this super-powered family.

Adam and Madison find themselves on the run, after they are left fighting for their lives against Madisons’ mothers’ ‘scumbag boyfriend’. As they make their escape, knowing they would be locked up if the authorities were ever to find them. Their car is suddenly struck by a flying purple comet. Just like before, upon touching this ominous object the teens are gifted with immense powers. From super strength to invulnerability, however its not long before a wannabe Nick Fury tracks them down. Can our original gang of super powered YOUTHs from Volume 1 save the day, or are they all destined to be incinerated?

Season Two kicks off with a new set of characters, as we meet a trio of outcast teens from troubled backgrounds. Following on with the similar trend of broken families, drug use, abandonment and hormonal teens, season two of YOUTHs follows a very similar trend to what we saw in Volume 1. All of which is taking place not long after Volume 1 ended. It’s certainly full of action, violence, sex driven teens and bullying. The most intriguing character of them all however, has to be our very own knock-off Nick Fury.

"youthseason2_1"

This high ranking, special forces agent is on the constant prowl of tracking down these super-powered teens. Given just a short amount of time, he even acquired weapons that were capable of taking down these anti-hero Youths. Not only that, but he even bragged about taking down Gods. Who does the guy think he is and where is his spin off series? Apart from this guy, we have to return to our original duo of Frank and River. If you want to see more of these two, then you are just going to have to read the very last issue. There are far too many spoilers, to even mention what happens there.

As it stands, YOUTH was a pretty interesting series. It had taken similar elements and plots from the likes of Marvel and Misfits. However it certainly was a lot more violent and bloody than what I was expecting, it would also make a good TV series. Which luckily for us, it is currently in the works with backing from Amazon Prime Video. Given enough advertising and promotion, this could be the next big thing for people that have enjoyed The Boys and Umbrella Academy. However I could easily see this comic series expanding, but as it stands I think this is the last we will see of them until the TV series hits screens.

Pizza and Taco are two of the most excitable party food best friends you would ever find! They both enjoy water slides, having fun with their friends Hot Dog and Hamburger, going all out for a party - and now they have decided to create a comic book together! Only trouble is - they can’t agree on whose ideas are better?!

‘Pizza and Taco’ return for a third time as they go about creating their very own superhero comic. However they can’t seem to agree on which direction to take with both the story and artwork. Taco is very talented at art, but has perhaps over done it when it comes to his very muscly character design. Whereas Pizza has gone all out on his super-incredible superhero alter ego. Just what will these two fast food friends do in order to make this comic happen?!

"pizzaandtacosuper1"

The ‘Pizza and Taco’ comic series is perfect for young readers that are just starting out on their first chapter books. With cute and funny illustrations, full of imagination and laughs. The story is simple but still interesting for young readers so it should hold their attention. The chapters are short, but are useful for young readers that are just starting out on reading chapter books on their own. There is also some fun to be had for the adults that may read these stories for their kids, as the imagery alone is amusing. I mean what other book are you going to read that has pizza and taco characters acting like kids? It’s certainly an amusing book to bring up with the other parents at the school gate.

The ‘Pizza and Taco’ series is created by author and illustrator Stephen Shanskan. Based in Minneapolis, Stephen’s life has always been focused on educating kids as he began his career as an early childhood educator. Since then he has also published over a dozen children's books, including ‘A Dog is a Dog’, ‘Three Triceratops Tuff’ and ‘Punk Skunks’.

With the release of Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? Graphic novel today, we are so delighted to be joined by the very talented co-writer and artist Eric Powell.

"DYHWEGD

Hi Eric, thank you for sitting and chatting with us today. We are so happy that we can do this; we have been fans of your work for a very long time. We are so excited to chat with you about your new graphic novel with Harold Schechter.

How would you describe Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?

At its core I guess I’d have to say it’s a period piece about a family steeped in madness. But there are a lot of angles to this book. We examine the distorted inner workings of Gein’s fantasy world, and how the sterilized 1950s America dealt with these almost inconceivable crimes, among other things.

"DYHWEGD

How did the collaboration with Harold Schechter come about?

I’ve been a long time fan of his. And was very aware of his book Deviant. The best and most accurate account of the Gein case. When I got the idea to do a graphic novel on Gein I began to have second thoughts because I didn’t believe I could do anything better than what Harold had already done. But I thought perhaps Harold might want to collaborate on it. Thinking he had probably come up with more material and insights since working on Deviant. I reached out through his agent and had little hope he would respond. In which case I would just move on to another project. But luckily it turns out that Harold is a huge comic fan and was really excited about the idea.

What was it like to write with Harold?

Great. He’s a super generous and unselfish collaborator. He also came up with perspectives that I would have never dreamed of. It was a very positive experience.

"DYHWEGD

On average, how long did it take you to create a page of art for the graphic novel?

It depended on the page. And the way I worked on the book, I can’t even really say how long an individual page took. I did pretty extensive story layouts to make sure it was flowing well, and those were done in chunks. I do know I was inking a minimum of 2-3 pages a day when that part of the process came about.

Before you started work on this graphic novel, how much did you know about Eddie Gein?

I wouldn't say I was an expert, but I was pretty knowledgeable. That didn’t really prepare me for the experience of completely immersing myself in this part of history, though. I found out pretty quickly the difference between working in fiction and non-fiction. Fact checking and research really add a lot of complexity to the process.

Was there a time when you were creating the art for the graphic novel that you found it difficult to create the art?

There are projects I’ve done where I found it difficult to portray the subject matter. Big Man Plans for example was a hard book to draw. I got pretty depressed at times. But the kind of analytical approach Harold and I took with this book made it not too difficult to tackle. We didn’t set out to make a grotesque book. Although it’s impossible not to be grotesque at moments when telling this story. But we wanted it to be more of a psychological horror.

"DYHWEGD

During the process of creating this graphic novel, have your thoughts about Eddie Gein changed?

Yes, a little. While his crimes are unforgivable, I always had a bit of sympathy for what he went through in life that turned him into the ghoul of Plainfield. However, I found myself having slightly less sympathy for him as I did more research. He never acknowledged or showed remorse for his crimes. He always claimed ignorance or tried to pass blame. It’s hard to find anything redeeming in that. I see him as an unredeemable pathetic and pitiable figure.

Any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

If you enjoy true crime, dark history and horror, I hope you check out “Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?”!

We would like to say a big thank you to Eric for taking the time to chat with us.

The history of Valderia has been wrought with wars and violence for so long. With evil encroaching upon the Pridelands from every corner, each King has fought his own battles in order to both improve the lives of its citizens, and ultimately - keep them safe. This collection of ‘Tales of Valderia’, recounts the history of leadership starting from Eramad I down through his successors and the creation of the Battlecats. With a look back on the feline history and the great dangers that rose against them. As well as an in depth look into the Gods, lands, fractions and legendary heroes that sculpted the Vaderia of today. A must read for all Battlecats fans!

"battlecats_tov1_1"

‘Battlecats: Tales of Valderia’ is a collection of the four part mini series that revolved around the history of Valderia. These issues all dealt with the Eramad dynasty and the Battlecats. Issue One followed King Eramad I as he mourned the loss of the great General Sai and gave birth to the idea of a group of felines to protect the nation. Following that we lead onto King Eramad II, who doubted his leadership so much that he exiled himself and left the country to the very capable fans of the nations most loved individual - the Great Goadar. Moving on, we meet a very young Kelthan as he is escorted to the White Marsh Islands by Natharien, to begin his training. From which Kelthan meets Valadar for the first time, when he was leader of the Battlecats and a trusted ally to the King. And lastly we have a story on Valadar, not long after he parted ways at the White Marsh Islands. As ordered by his King, he returns to his homeland of Blackstone and is disgusted by the carry on of his people. He becomes agitated and furious by their actions, making him an ideal target for the shrouded form of Myrthalen to make her move. Also included is the 2019 Halloween Comicfest Special, which recounted the battle between the former Battlecats led by Valadar and an unknown dark force that had taken hold of the people of Healer’s Edge in Arkhovia.

"battlecats_tov1_2"

There is so much going on in this series, that it’s great to get a compiled mini series and guide such as this, to help expand our knowledge of the World we have been reading about for so long. The detailed maps, backgrounds on the Eramad lineage and even artwork for the Gods & Moon Warriors has been a great inclusion, alongside the backstories. It’s well worth picking up this compiled volume if you are indeed a massive Battlecats fan. I mean who isn’t at this stage?!

"youthseason2_2"

The artwork is quite striking in a way that kind of reminds me of the rough sketches that are used for a storyboard during filming so everyone has an idea of how it will be shot. Some of the panels are quite crude at times, especially when it comes to facial expressions but it still manages to get the point & emotions across to the reader. This series doesn’t need to rely on pretty drawings and perfect outlines, the story is more than enough to carry this through. Where it excels is in the scenarios it depicts, the chaos, car chases, drug filled parties, horny teens making out and exploiting heads! It is honestly a wild ride for a comic and its no surprise that it has been picked up for a live action series.

As the Christmas holidays come to an end, Effie is itching to see her best friend Berrit again back at school. However Berrits attention has been completely focused on her new neighbour and sudden new best friend Garance. A magical mystery to be solved, one that Effie might be able to help with.

"whatthehex_1"

It is such a joy to see a second book being released in this series, as I thoroughly enjoyed the debut of Witches of Brooklyn. This however is just a cover up for her true intentions, as in reality she is researching occultism. This will tie in to her family history and the steps needed for her initiation into her family's religious sect. Perhaps its just by chance, but the professors and leading occult members to which she has encountered are now under attack. Mysterious as it may sound, each of them have suffered debilitating mental attacks that either kill them or leave them unconscious. The connection between each of these incidents is the use of a computer connected to the internet. Just how is Aiko and her family connected to these attacks and what exactly is the Esoteric Group?

"gammadracoinsvol1_1"

This story takes place between France and Japan, as Aiko is studying the numerous occults through the centuries in preparations for her future role in the family sect. Although at times it was rather difficult to keep following the plot, it was still a good read. It reminded me in a way of The Da Vinci Code, which was the last book I read that dealt with any religious mysteries or corruptions. Whilst reading this story, I felt like this would have made a better live action TV series than a book. Simply for the amount of action that was going on, as well as the corruption, murders and detective work being carried on by the French police. It has all the makings of a decent live action adaptation.

‘Gamma Draconis’ was visually brought to life by Eldo Yoshimizu, the creator of epic Yakuza manga ‘Ryuko’. The story for Gamma Draconis was created by Benoist Simmat, a French author, journalist and wine critic.

"gammadracoinsvol1_2"

For many, they may not enjoy this series as it is a tad niche. But for others, this will be a joy to own and pick from their book shelves for many years to come. It has intrigue, corruption, mystery, black magic and a search for eternal life. Throw in some unexpected plot twists and some interesting religious history, and you have a solid book right there. However it does have its downfalls, and that lies in the storytelling. Confusion sets in as the pace of the story becomes muddled, due to it being very dialogue heavy. The artwork tends to outshine the story on many occasions and I found it to be a story that even if you sat down and read it all in one sitting - it can be just as overwhelming, even if you managed to space it out.

This is definitely a series that is best suited towards fans of Dan Brown.

Overall: 7/10

Two garbage men are about to have one hell of a day! As a murderous cult consisting of the entertainment industry's elite, are out to kill them. James and Billy take a detour from their normal everyday route, when they come under attack by a biplane, try to control a wildfire, fight off a giant robot and wade their way through the sewers only to be set upon by a famous magician & their drag wearing alligator. And that isn’t the end of it either. They certainly need to have a sit down with their trade union after their shift ends - if they survive it?!

"hollywoodtrashTPB_1"

Well Mad Cave Studios has never failed to publish anything less that interesting. Now we have all known Hollywood to be the place where dreams come through and movies are being filmed left, right and centre! Movie stars reside in their big ass mansions in the Hills and normal folk still continue about their everyday lives. That includes our local garbage men, who have found themselves in a spot of bother when they unknowingly end up in the bad books of Hollywood’s most influential exec. With a cast of crazy individuals that make up the secretive Privy Council, some unrealistic chaos and many near death interactions.

All under the ‘control’ of the head of the Privy council - Papa. Also known as the elusive King of Hollywood ‘Mr. Grapevine’. A disillusioned individual, who dresses like Vincent Van Ghoul from Scooby Doo, who has blackmail on all of the important people in the city. The members of his council soon dwindled through some explosive endings, all of the individuals involved each had their own quirk. However the one character that stood out was Blah-Blah, also known as Talk-Show Queen Miss Opez. Man her backstory was tragic! Although ‘Papa’ set up her career and a marriage that secured her acceptance into the entertainment industry, she was just as driven as him and held so much resentment towards the man in the end. That arc alone was enough just to read this series. I’m unsure if there will be more issues, as this collected release is marked down as a Volume 1.

Hollywood Trash was created by Stephen Sonneveld, an award-winning writer whose work has appeared in Bleacher Report, MAD and ProWrestling Illustrated. Stephen currently writes and performs audio dramas for the Chicago-based radio program “The Don’t Call Me Sweetheart! Show”.

"youthseason2_2"

YOUTH was co created by author Curt Pires and illustrator Alex Diotto. Curt has had a very successful career as of late, as five out of his eight creator owned properties are now in development for TV and film, including YOUTH which has been licensed for Amazon Prime Video. The artwork is quite striking in a way that kind of reminds me of the rough sketches that are used for a storyboard during filming so everyone has an idea of how it will be shot. Some of the panels are quite crude at times, especially when it comes to facial expressions but it still manages to get the point & emotions across to the reader.
