She is the captain of her school's Basketball team, has a great group of friends and a loving family. Just as she begins preparing for her teams competitions, her Dad announces that he just got promoted and they will be packing up and relocating to America very soon. Devastated with the shocking news, the day comes when Lilico has to say goodbye to her best friends and the life she always knew. Now she must adjust to the American way of life, a new school, a second language and overcoming the many challenges she is sure to face. Including the school bully - Nala!

‘Bounce Back’ is the latest children’s graphic novel from the folks over at Feiwel & Friends. This story focuses on Lillico, a Japanese school girl whose life is turned upside down when her family relocates to Brooklyn, New York. Now in a different country and culture, Lillico must not only learn to adapt to the English language but also having to start all over again making friends. Inevitably she finds support in her new fashionable friend Nala and DBZ fan Henry. Through their friendship and support, as well as Lillico’s pet cat Nicco suddenly learning to talk - she starts gaining the confidence needed to try and join the school's Basketball team. It isn’t smooth sailing by any means, with complicated friendships, juggling new friends with teammates and trying not to fall under the pressure of being the new kid in school. There is alot going on in Lillico’s life, and this is sure to act as a life lesson for many young readers out there. Either to help them through similar situations or perhaps give them a different perspective on how it feels to be the new kid in class.

"bounceback_1"

There is plenty of excitement and drama to be had in this book, including a little budding romance as well. A great book to have for young athletes who love a good story. Or even for those that have more of an unstable living situation, that tend to transfer schools fairly often. It’s still a perfectly good read for those who don’t fall into either of those categories. You can quickly connect with the characters, it’s especially enjoyable for those that have an interest in anime, as the book has included references to both Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z.

"bounceback_2"

‘Bounce Back’ was both written and illustrated by author Misako Rocks! Dr. Mag Traumer is a devoted scientist, who spends the vast majority of her time working away like a mad woman in her lab. It has all paid off however, as she has finally proven that her invention can save millions of dollars, be widely accessible to all hospitals and is bound to save countless lives. Her devotion however came at a cost, with a broken marriage and divorce papers still awaiting her final signature, Dr Traumer is unexpectedly hit with a sudden case of reality when her boss unjustly finishes her contract thus locking her out of her lab and all her hard work. Now she stands in a bar, telling everyone her story and downing liquor at a worrying rate. To the point that she awakens in the back seat of her car, a stranger at the wheel and suddenly on a European road trip. Just how does this story connect together, I guess only Issue 2 will have to clue us in.

"athingcalledtruth1_1"

From the same creator of ‘Alice in Leatherland’, Iolanda Zanfardino returns with a brand new series. ‘A Thing Called Truth’ is their latest comic title, this time being published by the people over at Image Comics. This five issue mini series has already been quoted as being ‘a chaotic LGBTQ+ road trip’. Having only read Issue One thus far, I can see where they are coming from. We follow a woman by the name of Dr. Mag Traumer, a scientist working for Doppel Krzuz Pharma. Having just completed numerous tests on her latest ground breaking project, she goes home knowing that her invention will have a positive impact on the world of medicine. However, as you expected, she gets dismissed from her job and all her work is kept by her employer under the rules of her contract. Mag soon ends up in a bar, drinking her sorrows away. The fact that she blacks out in her car, only to awaken to a stranger driving in a very unfamiliar environment.

So thus far we have met Mag, seen how she was wronged by her employer, her work stolen and now struggling to deal with it all. Her new ‘chauffeur’ however is still a mystery, but she appears brave to the point of idiotic, having jumped in someones car and taken off. Her reaction to finding the owner of said car in the back seat, suggests this girl really does not give two shits. And then ending the issue with the fact they are now on an unexplained road trip across Europe? Just where did they begin from and what on Earth is about to happen next?! I can not see how this is going to turn into a sudden romance.

"athingcalledtruth1_2"

According to the author, ‘A Thing Called Truth’ is set to be a high energy road trip adventure mini series, where the characters go on a soul searching journey so they can discover the ideal balance between devoting themselves fully to work, whilst still enjoying life to the fullest. Something that Mag is in desperate need of learning, after her failed marriage and sudden job loss. The artwork for this series is being provided by Elisa Romboli, who has also worked on ‘Alice in Leatherland’ and ‘Destiny, NY’. Both of which I have done reviews of in the past. You can see the similar artstyle between all three titles, and with both Elisa and Iolanda having worked together in the past, this is sure to be an interesting series nonetheless. It is also supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, as we are supposed to see some kind of love interest dynamic evolving between our two female lead characters in the coming issues.

‘A Thing Called Truth’ #1 will be available to buy today in your local comic book store, or indeed online from the publishers - Image Comics. It was quite an interesting first issue, one that certainly needs more explanation. However it is still worth picking up, especially if you enjoyed Iolanda’s previous published works.

‘A Thing Called Truth’ #2 is set to be released on December 8th.

In a World far similar to our own, terrifying supernatural beings have appeared to not only collect the souls of the damned but also grant them horrific deaths. One day you may receive a message from an unknown entity that will inform you of the time and date of your demise. It may be days from now, weeks, months or even decades. However when that time comes, hellish creatures will apparate before you and tear you limb from limb. Thus tracking you down to Hell for your sins. The World has also begun to accept these supernatural events, making it into a religion of sorts, going on crusades to make the sinner repent before their execution. Acting as though they are martyrs for a new World, the mysterious origins of these creatures has yet to be unfolded. Can they be stopped, is every ‘victim’ deserving of their punishment and what has happened to our society when it becomes normal for these deaths to be televised live on air for all to see?

"thehellboundv1_6"

This tale comes to us from Yeon Sang-Ho, the acclaimed director of ‘Train to Busan’ and cartoonist Choi Guy-Seok of webtoon series ‘Songgot’.

Netflix has been hitting it out of the park recently with their catalogue of Asian live action series. With many around the World still talking about the recent success of ‘Squid Game’, I also had just finished ‘Beyond Evil’ just before then. Now the live action adaptation of ‘Hellbound’ has been added to my to watch list, especially after reading this gripping new book. This is infact a live action adaptation of a Webtoon known as ‘The Hell’, which is now being translated into English for the very first time with Dark Horse distributing the physical release. This is only Volume One however, with Volume Two heading our way Summer next year. So this is just a taste of what the live action adaptation will have in store for us, as the original author and illustrator will also be working on the Netflix adaptation. Which is always great to hear, as it will be far closer to the original material and what the creators had envisioned for their work.

"thehellboundv1_7"

‘The Hellbound’ is an international horror series, based in a World far similar to our own but is now going through some unbelievable events. With the appearance of floating heads materializing to certain individuals just to give them a death notice. Perhaps to give them time to enjoy life whilst they can, or more realistically - to repent for their sins. When the time does come, Hellish creatures appear and rip them to shreds, burning their bodies before disappearing once again down to the depths of ‘Hell’. There is no answer as to why this has only started to occur or how the people/victims are chosen. Society however has taken these events as a direct message from God, interpreting it as they must repent, live life without sin and damn all others that go against his teachings. There is even the beginning of a cult emerging - the ‘New Truth Society’, as well as fanatics that are riling on the public. The police, on the other hand, still continue to investigate these deaths. Whilst the media begins to livestream the ‘prophesied’ murders. There is one particular death in this that was heartbreaking, not only for the person involved - but more for the family they left behind. From the cast of Critical Role and their second campaign which involved the Mighty Nein getting involved with the Kryn Dynasty - comes this comic book series in conjunction with Dark Horse Comics. This series follows Leylas Kryn, also known as the Bright Queen, the ruler of the Kryn Dynasty in Xhorhas. This tale is that of a bittersweet love story, as we learn of the Bright Queens romance with her partner Quana, one that has continued across many lifetimes. Both are devoted to assembling the Luxon, a religious and all powerful artifact, in hopes of bringing a new Golden Age to their kingdom. When another piece of the Luxon is found, Quana is sent forth to retrieve it, but what awaits her may be the Dynasties undoing.

Many fans of Dungeons & Dragons have at least heard of the cast of Critical Role, where a group of anime and video game voice actors gather together to film their D&D sessions for the enjoyment of people on the internet. All of this is hosted on Twitch and YouTube every Thursday over on their official Critical Role channels. The World of Exandria and its lore, has all been created by the incredibly talented DM - Matthew Mercer. This comic series is based off of the characters in their second campaign, with this particular series being written by Darcy Van Poelgeest. Here we see a brief glimpse into the life of the Bright Queen of Xhorhas, her partner Quana and their lifelong quests to reunite the Luxons to help their people prosper. Within only this very first issue, we learn of this couple's devotion to one another, their cause and their kingdom. The Luxon is not only a religious artifact, but a being or object of immense power not of this realm. Gathering all of its pieces will be incredibly difficult, as we soon see.

Within the livestreams of this campaign, the Bright Queen in my opinion was played with such high regard, as a ruler of a country should. Then this comic shows a somewhat softer side to her when we see moments of her interacting with Quana. Although Quana’s character only appeared briefly in the livestreams, here in these issues we get to learn more about the warrior she has become, her devotion to Leylas’ and how far each of them would go to save the other. It truly is a loving look into their relationship, but also brings forth the realisation that the Kryns are also being targeted by others not even from the Empire. It will be very interesting to see where Issue Two will take this story, as there is plenty of room for expansion.

This mini comics series was written by Darcy Van Poelgeest, a multi award winning writer and director now living in Vancouver, B.C. Not only has his work included producing short films and commercials, but he is also an Eisner Award winning writer as well. Of which he received the Harvey Awards ‘Book of the Year’ and the 2020 Eisner Award for ‘Best Limited Series’ for his debut comic series ‘Little Bird’ (2019). Now he has undertaken the four part mini series that focuses on the Bright Queen from Critical Roles’ Tales of Exandria series. With creative consultation from the loremaster himself Mattew Mercer. Artwork is handled both by CoupleOfKooks (Vox Machina Origins II #5) and Helen Mask.

Critical Role: The Tales of Exandria: The Bright Queen #1 is yet another reason we have grown to love Dark Horse Comics even more, as they continue to work with bringing more of the characters from our favorite Critical Role campaigns to life. By not only expanding their stories, but just bringing them back once again as the cast continue now with Campaign 3 with a host of new characters, quests and adventures awaiting them all. So pick up this series now, as we all bide our time for the next livestream on Thursday. Critical Role: The Tales of Exandria: The Bright Queen #1 is available to buy now in your local comic book shop, as well as directly online from the publishers over at Dark Horse Comics.
