“Dark Birthday”

Hello everyone, look what just turned up on my doorstep!

My missing Nihon Box from February finally arrived, just days after my January box decided to make an appearance. Looks like I’m finally caught up now on all my MIA boxes, so reviews should be in perfect order from now on. Anyway, Februarys’ box was a pretty important one as it was celebrating Nihon Boxes 6th anniversary! And what a milestone it is, as they have not only survived a fairly niche market but also a worldwide pandemic! Super proud of them and it makes it even more special being a customer.

So let’s get onto the usual tidbits about this service. Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to for what I find a very affordable price each month.

Like SoKawaii, the more months you pay upfront the cheaper the price for individual boxes will be. https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

3 Months is a single payment of €86.97, making each box €28.99, plus shipping costs.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxfebruary2021_1"

Onto our first item this month, we have a very pretty looking origami set from the Studio Ghibli movie ‘Spirited Away’. This product is not only made in Japan, but the art of paper folding just screams Japanese culture. The first recorded mention of the artform comes from a reference to a paper model in a short poem by Ihara Saikaku in 1680. This particular set includes traditional origami paper and sets where you can construct various characters from the movie. Great for display purposes and even comes so well packaged, that it would also make a lovely gift.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_2"

Our second item is for all you snack lovers, as February's box included a rather large bag of Fugashi. The packaging for this one reminds me of a cow-print, so its rather confusing in its advertising. It’s actually a rather old snack that dates back about 150 years. It’s a wheat flour based bar that is just covered in brown sugar. Just plain and simple really, there seems to be a number of Japanese snacks like this. Either Way, seeing as the shipping took so long, this item was about a month out of date by the time I got it. So perhaps it will be included again in a future box.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_3"

Our third item is one I don’t really don’t know what to do with yet. As it’s this beautiful blue sakura patterned plate. Its quite unique, as I don’t know if you can really tell from the picture, but it has an almost water droplet effect on the plate. As though the raindrops had frozen in the moment, to create this unique texture and pattern on the surface. It’s one I never plan on using, as it has to be for decorative purposes in my eyes. This item is also made in Japan, and includes a signature on the back of the plate, so you know it was handcrafted. I just wished the pamphlet included some information on who created this piece.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_4"

We are now back to the anime merch, as we have a familiar bull dog clip plush and a figure. The plush clip is from the latest fan favorite show from Shonen Jump - Jujutsu Kaisen. We have gotten similar bull clips in the past from both SoKawaii and Nihon Box, when they included the Demon Slayer range. These are strong clips, unique in that its also a miniature plush but is also kind of awkward when you try to figure out how best to either use it or display the item. This particular one was available in six designs, of which I seem to have pulled the main character Yuji Itadori. On the right is our largest item in the box, and that is a Noodle Stopper figure of Hiei from Yú Yú Hakusho. Now these figures are usually in more relaxed poses, mostly with characters sitting down as they are created in such a way that they balance on top of your ‘pot noodle’ or ‘cup ramen’ as its ‘cooking’ away. Its a fairly well detailed figure, unfortunately I don’t really know much about the show other than it came out in the early 90’s and is almost as old as myself. Always nice getting figures in a box, although this one might be a bit too niche going by how old the show is.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_5"

We are now onto our final item of the month, which brings us back to a far more recent anime hit - Demon Slayer. This time we got a decorative lamp that had several characters labeled around the side, including Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu and Inosuke. With the off/on switch positioned underneath the lamp, you will also need 3 AA batteries to power it. It gives off a fairly decent amount of light, and also projects the Kimetsu no Yaiba logo from the top onto your ceiling. The bulb also changes color slightly from time to time, so its still a rather decent lamp. More for display purposes than practicality though I say.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_6"

There was one last piece in this box, and it was a special note from the folks over at Nihon Box. A lovely printed, decorative card with some touching words on how they have survived this long to make it to their sixth year in business. It’s really worth reading, so please take a moment to. They have also mentioned that they have several surprises coming out this year, and most certainly one of those is their new venture - Yatta Japan (https://www.yattajapan.com/en) Where you can buy many of the items that were included in previous boxes, as well as new figures, snacks, manga and more. All on the one website. Worth checking out, as they also have their own rewards scheme for every time you buy from them.

So there we have it folks, that was another Nihon Box - although it was fairly late in arriving. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from classic shows such as Spirited Away and Yú Yú Hakusho, to the newer franchises including Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime fans and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Dark Birthday”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about Setsubun - the demon hunting day and why it is celebrated in Japan. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

For more information on how you can order your own box, look to the top of this review and head over to the link below so you can sign up today!

‘Back To School’

Welcome back folks, to another Nihon Box unboxing!

This time we are taking a look back on what was available in April’s box, as even with Japan Post resuming normal service the mail is still coming in rather slow, with each box taking several weeks to get here. April’s theme focused on going ‘Back To School’, so we have a rather interesting mix of items that are kind of associated with that. So let’s get started.

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxapril2021_1"

Now on to our first two items, both of which are from the GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka franchise. A manga series that first debuted back in the late 90’s and has had a number of adaptations over the years, including both anime and live action dramas. The series follows a young man named Onizuka who decides to become a teacher in order to attract women. He soon discovers he has a conscience and instead devotes himself to becoming the best teacher, thus using whatever means necessary to break through and help each one of his students that others have given up on. It genuinely sounds like a good show, much like Assassination Classroom - just minus the indestructible creature for a teacher. So in this box, we were lucky to receive a nice sized shopping bag and a set of four corkboard coasters. Each with various illustrations from the show. I would imagine that this series doesn’t have much merch nowadays, seeing as the last adaptation was back in 2014.

"nihonboxapril2021_2"

We also got a small stationary item in this month's box, with a Doraemon Sakura themed pen. Doraemon is perhaps one of the most iconic anime characters in Japan, perhaps more so than Pikachu. This blue alien cat has been a part of generations of people's childhoods since the 1970’s. Its initial manga ran for 26 years! The anime series is still ongoing even today. So its quite nice to be able to get an item that represents a show with that much history attached to it. I mean this box is supposed to be focussed on Back to School, yet this pen will be the only piece of stationary included.

"nihonboxapril2021_3"

Moving on, we have both a Japanese snack item and a good luck cat. Our snack for April’s box was the Karintó Matcha Milk Flavor pastry. They are a traditional Japanese snack food. Sweet and deep-fried, it is made primarily of flour, yeast, and brown sugar. With this version having a matcha milk taste to it. I was hoping to try this one for myself, but unfortunately it was out of date by the time it got to me. The joys of a slow postal service -.-’

On the right is a miniature black cat figure, known as a Maneki-neko Sakura. Over in Japan, the sakura (cherry blossom) season is associated with the start of a new school year. Many schools in Japan actually resemble what you would see in anime, in fact it is pretty common to see sakura trees planted at the front entrances of schools. This little figure is also meant to attract good luck and wealth, as this one is seen lifting its right paw.

"nihonboxapril2021_4"

We are now on to a rather large item that came in this Aprils’ box, and that is a figure of Yúji Itadori from the popular anime this year - Jujutsu Kaisen. Now I am certain you have seen plenty of posts and merch going around these past six months or so about this anime. Although I have yet to sit down and watch an episode myself, it seems to have created a rather large fanbase. It’s the latest supernatural series that seems to be pulling in a new audience for Weekly Shónen Jump, and is also available to read now over on the Shonen Jump manga app. With almost 150 chapters available to read now for just €1.99 a month. Coming back now to the figure, its rather large and is quite sturdy. All you have to do is sit the figure on the base and that's it. He comes in what I would call a ‘ready to fight’ pose, which I assume is his usual stance in the show. Its fairly well detailed and built, it was also added into this box just days after it was released in Japan. So its a fairly decent exclusive for a subscription box, its just freshly out in stores!

"nihonboxapril2021_5"

We are now onto our final item, one that is sure to cushion-the-blow for fans of these reviews! What school themed box would be complete, if it didn't include Koro Sensei? Many of you must be aware of the yellow, perverted octopus from Assassination Classroom. A fantastic show and manga, if you have never heard of it before. The plot follows a group of students, who have become outcasts in their own school due to either their behaviour or failing grades. An opportunity is presented to them to change their fortune, if they participate in trying to assassinate their new teacher - a terrifying and indestructible mutant by the name of Koro sensei. If they fail, the entire Earth will be destroyed by the time they graduate high school. It’s well worth checking out, either the manga or even the anime. So the merch we got from the show is infact a small pillow of Koro senseis’ head! Small, soft and round, it acts as a nice head cushion or just a simple throw pillow.

Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. “Spring Time, Happy Time!”

Hello everyone, I am back once again with another SoKawaii box to review. This time I have May’s box, which focuses on Spring Time. With a number of items dedicated to making your homelife that bit more kawaii, with merch from Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and San-X. So let’s get started with information on who SoKawaii is!

For those of you that don’t know – SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 5 to 7 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep each month. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media accounts. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts, particularly their Instagram one – https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

"sokawaiimay2021_1"

So our first item this month is one I have longed to own - a Kuromi plush! This adorable plush mascot comes in her very own maid outfit, all set for the big Spring Clean. With an outfit that would fit right in with any maid café in Japan, Kuromi has a matching headband and bows as well. This officially licensed mascot comes straight from Sanrio, however she won’t be in every May box as there is also a My Melody version that could also be included. This was obviously the best item from the box this month for me!

"sokawaiimay2021_2"

Moving on to our second Sanrio item, which is a magnetic hook featuring a number of Sanrio’s most iconic characters. There were two designs available for this product, as it is unusual to find a magnetic hook as it leaves very few places to actually use it. Mine ended up being attached to the side of my cooker, so I can hang up my oven glove. It really makes you think, how many places have you in your home that you can actually attach a magne.

"sokawaiimay2021_3"

Next up is our kitchenware items for this month, which include a bowl and chopsticks. The bowl is actually made from bamboo fiber, which makes it more eco friendly than plastic and is also food safe. It even includes a fun looking Sumikkogurashi design on the inside, which will make a lovely little surprise for when you are done eating your food. Now I wouldn’t suggest putting this in a dishwasher, as it could either ruin the design or it mightn’t be suitable for high temperatures. Best keep with the old fashion way and wash it by hand.

Accompanying this bowl is two sets of chopsticks, featuring everyone's favourite My Neighbor Totoro from Studio Ghibli. These 21cm chopsticks (which I don’t really know they came in different sizes), are decorated at the top by the lovable character. Perfect for sharing a meal, or having as a back up.

"sokawaiimay2021_4"

Our final item this month comes once again from San-X with this super soft Rilakkuma pillow. This pillow is in fact more of a cushion, going by the size and shape. It’s quite soft, but not very ‘plump’ as though it could have done with some more stuffing for a more firm cushion. However if it was, it may not have fitted inside the box! This cushion of course has two ‘faces’ to it, with Rilakkumas’ face taking up the entirety of one side with flowers printed on the corners. The opposite side is more sparse, with a beautiful background filled with sakura petals and flowers. With Rilakkuma enjoying a Dango and Korilakkuma sitting beside him in the corner. We also have the little chick Kiiroitori sitting on top of a flower in the top corner. It really does make for a lovely throw pillow, but practicality not so much as there are so many warnings on the label that this cushion can never be machine washed. So once again, make sure and wash this one by hand if you need to.

"sokawaiimay2021_5"

There we have it folks, that was Mays’ SoKawaii box. Very Sanrio and San-X heavy in the merch, with a good mix of items. Now let’s get on to the all important information, for how YOU can begin your own subscription, as well as a special discount code just for you guys.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. SoKawaii are back to shipping their boxes via Japan Post, so delivery may take a number of weeks. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 Month – $35.00 (€29.00mo roughly)

3 Months – $33.50 (€28.00mo roughly)

6 Months – $32.00 (€26.50mo roughly)

12 Months – $31.50 (€26.00mo roughly)

Better yet, here is a $3 discount code that you can use on your first box by clicking this link!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you enjoyed May’s box, then just wait for June’s! It’s theme is “Dreamy Creatures”, which will feature a number of items from Sanrio, Kirby, My Neighbour Totoro and Pokémon. That box is already sold out and on the way to me, and will include my very own Totoro plush! Stay tuned to SoKawaiis’ social media, as they announced their themes, sneak peaks and opinion polls on what fans want to see next in their boxes. They are very active on their Instagram and really listen to what their customers are looking for – so go have your say now! Also make sure and use that special discount code I left you all above!

“Dreamy Creatures”

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another ComicBuzz review! In todays’ post I took a look into what was included in SoKawaii’s June Box. The theme they ran with this time is “Dreamy Creatures”, which features six products from a number of licenses. Including Studio Ghibli, Sanrio, Pokémon and Kirby. So let’s get started on our usual description of what SoKawaii is and what they have to offer you!

"sokawaiijune2021_1"

So our first item this month is surely worth the price of the box alone, and that is the official Totoro plush from My Neighbour Totoro. Studio Ghibli merch is not cheap folks, especially on this side of the World. I have seen this exact plush go for £45 in HMV - and it’s not a massive plush by any regards! So for me, everything else in this box I may have just gotten for free cause this plush was definitely the cream of the crop. It’s super fluffy, plump, stands freely on its own and is an official merch. Although it doesn’t have its toothy, almost creepy looking grin - it is still adorable as heck and perfect to be put on display alongside your Studio Ghibli film collection.

"sokawaiijune2021_2"

"sokawaiijune2021_3"

Moving on we head on over to the world of Pokémon, with this highly adorable Pikachu masking tape. This item was available in four designs, all from the Pokemon Sepia Graffiti collection. Looking into it now, this is a fairly old release, as it first came out back in 2016. However the designs are still just as adorable all the same, I wouldn’t say no to another item from this collection being added again in a future box.

"sokawaiijune2021_4"

We are now onto our second Pokémon item, with this very large Face Towel. With two designs available at random in every box, one of which will feature both Pikachu and Eevee enjoying a relaxing nap. This super soft towel is quite large and is more of a hand towel in my eyes, than a face towel. It looks like 8 times the size of a face cloth and the picture I took of it above is with the towel folded over 3 times!

"sokawaiijune2021_5"

We are now back to stationary with this next item, featuring Kirby. June’s box saw everyone getting a set of two limited edition KIrby clear file folders, which were available in four regional designs. Including Tokyo, Osaka, Okinawa and Fujisan, with Kirby posing at each location. Now this is another older collection, as this was originally released last April. However it is quite adorable, but what does everyone do with their clear files? Do you display them, and if so how? Reach out to us on either Twitter or Facebook and tag us in your posts, to show us your clear file display ideas.

"sokawaiijune2021_6"

Our final two items are both from Sanrio, the largest of which is the My Melody circular floor mat in the picture above. Which is just one of three designs that was available at random in every box, the other two included Cinnamoroll and Hello Kitty. This mat is 50x50cm, probably amongst the smallest you can find and would be perfect to have at your computer desk. Better yet it has numerous anti slip bumps underneath, so it shouldn't go sliding about the place when you walk on it. The upside has a printed design of one of the three characters included, with the name in pastel print and a quote about the character underneath. This item was released in 2020, going by the trademark on the mat. It’s nice and soft, but I could easily see this getting stained very quickly and I’m unsure how machine washable it is. So best be careful with this one.

And our final item is a small Hello Kitty storage box. This clip-closed box would easily work as a small lunch box, for storing your washi/masking tape, for hair ties or even your medication as long as you don’t have small kids in the house that will be quickly drawn to such a cute box as this one. It also looks like a classic vintage Hello Kitty design, one that is sure to last the ages.

There we have it folks, that was Junes’ SoKawaii box. This month had a good mix of items, from decorative, storage, household and stationary from some iconic franchises.

Now if you enjoyed June’s box, then just wait for July’s! It’s theme is “Enchanting Matsuri”, which will feature a number of items from Sumikko Gurashi, Sanrio and Rilakkuma. That box is already sold out and on the way to me and will include a Sumikko Gurashi electric hand fan! Shame the Irish heatwave has already been and gone!

Two girls from two very different backgrounds, connect one night over music. As people pass by paying no attention to them, the whole City will stop to hear them play one day, as Carole and Tuesday meet for the very first time. A series about following your passion, letting the music guide you and working hard to make it big in the music industry as musicians who create their own melodies and lyrics from scratch - a rarity in their time. This series is perfect for all you music lovers, as it promotes so many genres as well as giving some sort of insight into the music industry. Carole & Tuesdays’ lyrics are sure to stay with you for a very long time.

Well this was a complete surprise, I began watching this show fully expecting a happy go lucky series with little to no depth. Well I was gladly mistaken, as Carole & Tuesday had character development, plot and soundtracks that would stand out miles above many other and more well known shows out there. It actually felt like this could very easily be adapted into a live action, TV drama. Going from the initial poster, you wouldn't think these two girls had very much in common and perhaps they wouldn't have if it wasn't for their music. Both are driven to make this duo work, even upon their first night meeting all they wished to do was make a song together. It was like an instant friendship between the pair. The idea seemed a bit forced at the start, but shows like this only get better as episodes progress - it just needed that forced kickstart to get it going.

"caroleandtuesday_1"

So let's begin with Tuesday, the pretty little white girl who ran away from home (a big ass mansion I might add) with her expensive Gibson guitar. Leaving her cushy lifestyle and political campaign focussed mother behind, Tuesday makes her way to Alba City (a play on Alba Records I presume) in order to pursue her music. However this girl has no idea just how to survive on her own, so luckily for her she runs into a kind hearted girl playing her keyboard on the bridge to passers by. And here we meet Carole, an orphan and refugee from Planet Earth - (oh by the way people, this show takes place on Mars. Yeah, its fairly futuristic and metropolitan, but of course there are massive wealth divisions between the people living on Mars.) Carole wants to have a music career and was just missing someone as talented as Tuesday by her side to make it. Carole is completely down to earth, hard working and driven. Together these two girls make some positive waves in the industry as they work their way up. However they also have their own rivals along the way.

Carole & Tuesdays music career gets a massive boost from a viral video of them practising a new song they wrote in a local venue, which they didn't ‘exactly’ have permission to use. As their performance and escape goes viral, the girls soon get the attention of an experienced but out of practice agent. This series has countless high points, each episode was memorable in its own way. Whether for the original songs, the covers, the episode names, down to the performances in each episode - its truly captivating at times. The character development and plot could have just been a show all on its own, even without the incredible soundtrack. As we have Tuesday and her family drama with her mother running for President. Promoting a campaign that would see all refugees being sent back to Earth. A campaign that would also see Carole being directly affected. Carole is more focussed on her career, has survived this long in life without knowing her parents. Something that is later explored and very tastefully done in my opinion. With their newfound fame, it quickly attracted those that only wanted to be near her for whatever money and fame she had gotten. The dark side of humanity definitely showed its ugly head one or two times throughout the show.

"caroleandtuesday_2"

The most interesting arc in this show came from when the girls were entered into a Singing Competition called ‘Mars Brightest’. Here they met and competed against Angela, a fashion model wanting to transition into music. This girl has a whole character plot of her own, one that ended up being far more complex and captivating than Carole & Tuesday's storylines! And Angela was only one of the other contestants, each character in this show had their own impact on the overall experience. They each brought something to the overall plot. There are some terribly sad moments, but they add to the impact the show leaves on you. Layering that on top of an incredible music score, well that shit is going to stay with me for years to come. The only thing I wish was that this show had gotten a physical release from one of the UK’s Anime Distributors instead of Netflix. I would even settle for just a Vinyl of the shows soundtrack, as at the moment I just have a YouTube playlist to go from.

‘Carole & Tuesday’ is available in a number of language audios over on Netflix, including French, German, Japanese and English. I personally watched it in English and it was a very good dub, the songs were just beautiful. This series ran for 24 episodes and was created by studio BONES in commemoration of the studio's 20th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of record label FlyingDog. The series had two directors, including the infamous Shinichiró Watanabe. Widely known for his anime works including Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy and Kids on the Slope. Our second director was Motonobu Hori, who has had an extensive career and has done numerous jobs across titles including Steamboy, Spirited Away, BECK, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc trilogy and Napping Princess.

‘Carole & Tuesday’ is currently available to enjoy in full over on Netflix in the UK & Ireland! Make sure to check your region for more up to date information.

6 Months – $32.00 (€26.50mo roughly)

Which ran with the theme - Natsukashi Vol 2. Which translated into English means Nostalgia Vol 2, as items included in this box takes us back to anime that came out in the 1980s. So let’s get started with the usual and all important info - how you can order your own Nihon Box subscription!

Due to the latest European VAT legislation, the overall cost after shipping has increased slightly. The folks behind Nihon Box have done all they can to make this transition as simple as possible, so they have taken the necessary steps & changes in order to include the VAT directly in the subscription's price. This change will normally be effective starting from the next renewal of your subscription, with the addition of the VAT in the final price (19% for Germany). And from August, as a small gift of appreciation to their overseas customers they will be including a 1000yen gift card to their YattaJapan.com store. As an idea of how much the charge has gone up, prior to August I was paying €32.89 a month. The new price I pay now is €40.45 a month, which is a nice increase but I believe the value is still there within the box.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxjune2021_1"

Although our first item this month doesn’t originate from the 80’s, it is definitely a trip from the past as Shaman King is making a big return! If you haven’t heard already, the anime is getting a revival and is already being aired in Japan. With it hitting the rest of the World on Netflix in the coming weeks if not, this very second as you are reading this! Just to remind people of that fact, Nihon Box has included a packet of ‘Onsen Maju Shaman King Chocolates’. Now I have had this brand of chocolate before, and they are so good! These ones are having a collaboration with Shaman King at the moment, to promote the new anime. Each chocolate is individually wrapped with a character from the show. A good snack to munch on as we all binge watch the new anime when it drops on Netflix.

"nihonboxjune2021_2"

Now we travel back to the 80’s with a My Neighbour Totoro tumbler. Now I got this exact same item back in So Kawaiis October box last year, so I have since re-gifted this to a very happy little girl I know. This hard plastic tumbler comes in a forest green color, with characters and designs from the famous film printed around the entire cup. It can hold 500ml, has a screw on lid and a straw making it ideal to enjoy outside and not have to worry about any summer bugs getting in for a swim. I wouldn’t be putting this in a dishwasher however, as you don’t know if these things are heat treated. So in order to prevent any mishaps, I would suggest just strictly washing this by hand.

"nihonboxjune2021_3"

Carrying on with the 80’s nostalgia trip, we received a rather large figure from Dragon Quest. The franchise is having another revival as a new anime - Dragon Quest: The Adventures of Dai hit screens just last year and is still currently airing. This has led to a new wave of new merch and figures being released, including this highly detailed figure of our main man Dai. In such a battle-ready pose, sword out and in the midst of a fight. All that's missing is a slain dragon or just a shonen worthy backdrop (something with a volcano exploiting seems appropriate). This figure deserves to be displayed and is sure to take up a nice section of your collection.

"nihonboxjune2021_4"

Now I may not recognise this show, but I’m sure at least one of you will. Cat’s Eye follows the story of three sisters who have become formidable art thieves, as they try to ‘collect’ all the works belonging to their missing father. This shows’ artwork may seem familiar to some of you, as Cat’s Eye is another manga creation from Tsukasa Hojo. The same manga artist behind City Hunter and Angel Heart. This canvas bag really does show off his art style, with the three Kisugi sisters taking centre stage. The bag has drawstrings on either side and can be worn as a backpack, but it also has a handle on the top if you just wish to carry it about. However the drawstrings have nowhere to be tidied away if you wish to do this. This bag could very well be seen as more as a collectors item or art piece, instead of being used as a gym bag.

"nihonboxjune2021_5"

This next item is very unique, as its made of a material that I think could be unique to Japan. When I mention the word Tatami, do you imagine the traditional tea rooms and Geisha in Japan? Cause that is exactly what I envisage. Tatami was most commonly used as traditional flooring in Japanese homes, hence why you never wear your shoes inside the home and must wear either your socks or house slippers. In recent times, tatami rooms and flooring have become more uncommon and are rarely featured now in modern house designs. As such the tradition is slowly dying and craftsmen have turned their time into making smaller items out of tatami. Such as the above Tatami pouch, which is from the igusa (common rush) plant, which is used in the making of traditional tatami flooring. This is a truly unique item, something I have actually never seen or even heard of before. As I just believed that tatami was just flooring. I never realised they could also be made into other items.

"nihonboxjune2021_6"

"nihonboxjune2021_7"

We are now onto our final item and of course it is from a very popular series that I assure you all know - Dragon Ball! The infamous Shonen Jump title from Akira Toriyama, first debuted back as a manga in 1984, with the anime first hitting screens just two years later. The show has grown from strength to strength, making it an incredible and ever growing franchise. Having built up an audience over the decades, constantly gathering new viewers. So our final item for June’s box is a mystery box from the Dragon Ball Adverge collection. A series of minifigures, featuring seven of the most iconic characters from the shows Namek Saga. Including not only Goku, Gohan, Piccolo and Vegeta, but also Frieza and two of his henchmen Dodoria and Zarbon. Pretty happy to say I got Freiza, who looks completely badass in his floating chair. Now these figures are very mini, they each come with a tiny dragon ball, which has no stand so it will get lost very quickly. So just be very aware of that, in case a little one or pet decides to pick it up. The details on the figures however are very good, as you can see from above.

So there we have it everyone, that was June’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? This month’s topic was about ‘Tatami with Japanese people’, a traditional flooring method that has since begun a rapid decline in popularity due to its high cost and a change in house designs. However craftsmen have since turned with the times and have begun making smaller objects such as the pouch included in this month's box. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

For more information on how you can order your own box, look to the top of this review and head over to the link below so you can sign up today!

https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Hello everyone and welcome back to another Nihon Box review!

In this article I take an indepth look at what was included in May’s subscription box. A tad late I know, but it appears the global c****a virus pandemic is still impacting the postal service. As there are few international flights available, leading to a lengthy delay on packages reaching their final destination. Either way, let’s get on with it. May’s box ran with an interesting theme, which was ‘Humanity’. It contained merchandise from no less than four anime franchises, as well as a traditional ornament and a tasty ‘wagashi’.

Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

"nihonboxmay2021_1"

"nihonboxmay2021_2"

So let’s begin with our first item this month! Straight to the kettle we go with this Dr. Stone mug, the ideal size for a quick cuppa tea in the mornings. Dr. Stone first hit screens back in 2019 with the first season of its anime, season two finished airing in March of this year so people are still pretty hyped for this show. The plot follows a high school student named Senku, wise beyond his years, has a can-do attitude and is fascinated with science. Something that will certainly stand to him and the remaining survivors of mankind, when a sudden and mysterious event takes place that petrifies all of humankind into stone for thousands of years. It’s down to Senku and a number of other teenagers who broke free, to set about fast-tracking their way back to 21st century society. It’s a show well worth checking out, as its available to stream now over on Funimation and Crunchyroll. Physical release is handled by Manga Entertainment UK.

"nihonboxmay2021_3"

Our second item is one I am very excited about, as we get a porcelain mini samurai helmet. You can’t get more Japanese, than a Samurai ornament! This small display item is usually used as a decoration item during Kodomo no hi, a traditional holiday that celebrates children which takes place on the 5th of May. Japan is steeped in tradition as you well know, and there is a lot of history involving samurai. I would advise looking it up in your own time if you are interested. This item however is perfect as a holiday souvenir or gift. How would you display this Samurai mini helmet in your home?

"nihonboxmay2021_4"

We return once again to another anime related item, with this mini Cells At Work plush. Now I haven’t seen this anime, so I have no idea as to what it is actually about. From the look of it though, I would guess that the plot is fairly similar to the 2001 film - Osmosis Jones. Where cells in the body are sentient and with ‘lives’ of their own, fight against any foreign viruses or illnesses that enter the body they live in. The inner workings of the human body I guess, how very relatable to the World these past 18months. The plush is of one of the main characters - White Cell. This miniature plush will have no trouble finding a space to live within your plushie collection.

"nihonboxmay2021_5"

Now for a short snack break, as I sit back and inhale these two delicious Dekopon Monaka. These pastries are known as wagashi treats in Japan, which are small savoury treats that are usually paired well with green tea. The flavor was quite nice, as it had a rather generous dekopon filling. With a very homemade jam-like texture, dekopon are a citrus fruit that are quite similar to an orange. Sandwiching this filling together, are two small waffles. Very similar in taste and texture to a pair of ice cream wafers. An interesting treat, pleasant taste but not too sure about the waffles. They were a bit too crumbly and messy to eat.

"nihonboxmay2021_6"

Back now to another anime item, this time from the show Black Clover. This anime has been doing very well for itself since its debut back in 2017. With a total of 170 episodes in all and an anime film currently in the works, it has gathered quite a following of fans. With new merch continuously being released, it stands as another Shonen Jump long standing franchise. The item we received was a medium sized zip pouch featuring all of the members of the Black Bull Squad, including the shows main man Asta. A fairly roomy pouch inside, plenty of space for all those coins you will need for the arcades. Can also work as a make up punch, pencil case, purse, whatever you can cram inside really. Its a nice design on the front, with a strong zip but due to the way the pouch was made the image can be a little lackluster and almost looks like it was bought straight from ebay. That’s my own opinion however, others might find more value in this than me.

"nihonboxmay2021_7"

,The final item in May's box that everyone received, is this figure from ‘Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun’. Now this is another anime that I am fairly unfamiliar with, but going by the plot over on its Wikipedia page - it seems like a rather fun show. With Season One of the anime first debuted back in 2019, Season Two is currently airing as we speak. The plot follows a human teenage boy named Iruma Suzuki, who is sold by his parents to a demon. How he finds himself in the demon world, adopted by the same demon he was sold to and is now enrolled in the demon school his new ‘demon grandfather’ runs. Only trouble is, he can never reveal that he’s human - as he will be quickly devoured by all his classmates. So the figure we all received in this box was of the lead character Iruma and his friend Mofuego - who I can’t seem to find any information on online. Its a rather large figure of Iruma, well made, sturdy and definitely well painted. Can see no faults with it at all, definitely added to the overall value of the box. The figure could be hitting a niche portion of anime fans, as I believe that this anime hasn’t gotten much advertising to western audiences yet.

"nihonboxmay2021_8"

Now if you are a regular subscriber to Nihon Box, you are well aware of the added bonus item you receive for free every three months. May must have been my month, as I received a mystery bonus item from Square Enix (pictured above). Its a rather cute acrylic character set, the problem is I have no idea what this is from. If anyone knows, feel free to reach out to us on our social media by tagging @ComicBuzz in your responses.

Now if you enjoyed May’s box, then just wait for June’s! It’s theme is “Dreamy Creatures”, which will feature a number of items from Sanrio, Kirby, My Neighbour Totoro and Pokémon.

So there we have it everyone, that was April’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from classic shows such as GTO and Doraemon, to the newer franchises including Assassination Classroom and Jujutsu Kaisen. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime fans and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Back to School”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about School life in Japan and how it is different from perhaps western countries. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

A Tale of Two Sisters is still considered the highest grossing Korean horror film of all time, and rightly so. This film keeps the audience guessing until the very end, when all is revealed and you are left reeling in shock during the closing credits - I certainly was at least. Although at times the plot did appear confusing, I encourage you to watch to the very end for that jaw-dropping reveal.

“Enchanting Matsuri”

Hello everyone, I am back once again with yet another SoKawaii review. This time we take a look at what was included in July's box, which just like the Nihon Box is all themed around celebrating the summer matsuri season. The products in this box are from Sanrio, San-X, Sumikko Guarashi and Pokémon. So let’s get started on our usual description of what SoKawaii is and what they have to offer you!

"sokawaiijuly2021_1"

Our first item this month comes straight from San-X, with their Rilakkuma tray made from bamboo fibre. A more sustainable material that has become very popular with brands over the last few years, due to how quickly the plant grows and the fact it doesn’t need any pesticides. This tray has a lovely print on the front of Rilakkuma, Korilakkuma and Kiiroitori dressed in their colorful yukatas as they enjoy a night filled with fireworks and tasty treats. The ideal way to enjoy a matsuri festival in Japan. This tray also has a trademark on the bottom right for 2021, meaning this tray was only just recently released during this summer.

"sokawaiijuly2021_3"

Next up is our Pokémon item from the Pocket Monsters Sepia Graffiti collection. We actually received another item from this very same collection in last month’s box, with a washi tape. Now I am unsure as to how old this collection actually is, as I have seen on other websites that the washi tape was first released back in 2018. However this month we have gone a little more upscale, with this handy pouch case. This pouch is actually really well made, has a tanned look to it and you would almost expect that it was made entirely out of leather. The design on the front features an Eevee and Pikachu, as they do a bit of window shopping. As you can see, Eevee is taking interest in the three evolution stones on display in the window. Behind them is a cobbled street, with an old style phone box and lamp post. The whole look to this design, gives off a feel of old London in the last century. The script on the front is also pretty charming as well, as it gives a very brief description of the idea of Pokémon. Now the pouch is snug enough, you would certainly fit in a normal of pens and pencils, perhaps some make up or cash envelopes. Unfortunately it was too snug to fit my phone, so you would want a very slim model to fit into this pouch.

"sokawaiijuly2021_4"

Now we move on to Sanrio, with this pair of My Melody Kitchen sponges. Now this item was in fact available in two different designs, with the iconic Hello Kitty being the other pair you could receive. These die cut sponges are just adorable, that it would almost be a shame to use them to wash a mound of dirty dishes. However they are indeed practical and will certainly get you out of a pinch if you don’t intend on making a special trip to the shop.

"sokawaiijuly2021_5"

Where or where was this several weeks back during the big Irish heat wave! Honestly could have done with this a while back. So we now move onto the Sumikko Gurashi part of our July box, with this electric hand fan. This fan would be the perfect accessory to accompany you on a trip during a hot summer's day. It’s design is made to resemble an ice cream cone, with the characters of Sumikko Gurashi acting as the toppings. All you do is slide the cover over to reveal the fan, with a switch on the side to turn it on. Hopefully I can get better use out of this next year!

"sokawaiijuly2021_6"

And now we end with our final item, a Little Twin Stars plush. You could have gotten either Kiki or Lala in your July box, both of which are dressed in their light Summery Yukatas. Of which you can see I got Kiki in his blue yukata. This quality looking plush is well made, no loose threads or fabric. Well stuffed and stitched together. This could even be safe for young children to have. It is also a lovely addition for all plush collectors.

There we have it folks, that was Julys’ SoKawaii box. This month had a good mix of items, from a seasonal plush, a hand fan, a Pokémon pouch and some homeware from some iconic franchises.

Now if you enjoyed July’s box, then just wait for August’s! It’s theme is “Happy Summer Trip”, which will feature a number of items from Studio Ghibli, Sanrio and Kirby. That box is already sold out and on the way to me and will include a My Neighbour Totoro water bottle! Stay tuned to SoKawaiis’ social media, as they announced their themes, sneak peaks and opinion polls on what fans want to see next in their boxes. They are very active on their Instagram and really listen to what their customers are looking for – so go have your say now! Also make sure and use that special discount code I left you all above!

https://www.sokawaii.com/

"Night Matsuri"

Hello everyone and welcome back to another subscription box review. Today I will be taking an indepth look into what was included in July's edition of Nihon Box. Which was filled to the brim, full of goodies you are sure to enjoy during those long summer days. So let's get started with the usual info.

Due to the latest European VAT legislation, the overall cost after shipping has increased slightly. The folks behind Nihon Box have done all they can to make this transition as simple as possible, so they have taken the necessary steps & changes in order to include the VAT directly in the subscription’s price.

"nihonboxjuly2021_1"

The first item this month is a beautiful Hatsune Miku Summer Matsuri PVC statue from Taito, measuring 18cm tall. This very colorful figure has so much going on in its design, that celebrates those famous summer festivals we have all seen in Japanese anime. This hologram diva is wearing a red, yellow and blue short yukata, with images of fireworks on one of her arm sleeves. Her accessories include a kitsune mask on her head, as well as a uchiwa hand fan in one hand and a candy apple (ringo ame) in the other. She is sure to make a great addition to the figure collection, which is ever growing thanks to these subscription boxes. If you have missed out on getting this figure, then I suggest getting in contact with Leanne’s Anime over on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/leannesanime/

"nihonboxjuly2021_2"

If you fancy mimicking Miku’s design and getting in the matsuri spirit, then you will certainly enjoy this small uchiwa matsuri fan. This accessory is perfect for the summer weather, it's lightweight and portable. Allowing you to fan yourself with a slight cool breeze as you enjoy the summer, no matter where you are. This is a traditional hand fan that is still pretty popular and iconic to own today. At least you never have to worry about your small electric fan running out of power, when you own one of these.

"nihonboxjuly2021_3"

Moving on, we have a serving tray, featuring the characters from ‘The Quintessential Quintuplets’. An anime that debuted from Tezuka Productions back in 2019. The series follows the daily life of a high school student Futaro Uesugi, who is hired as a private tutor for a group of identical quintuplets: Ichika, Nino, Miku, Yotsuba, and Itsuki Nakano. At the very beginning of the story, it is indicated Futaro will marry one of the Nakano Quintuplets but the identity of the bride is unknown until near the end of the story. The design on this tray is of the five sisters as they stand together in their yukatas, as fireworks explode behind their heads. This manga series has become very popular as of late, so I am sure there are a few fans of this series already that will be thrilled with this bit of unexpected merch.

"nihonboxjuly2021_4"

Now what is the best function of a tray, other than putting snacks on it?! So our next item this month is an Azuki flavour Taiyaki. Which is a common sight at festival food stalls. This fish-shaped sweet pastry dessert has a large filling of red bean paste (azuki). However the outer pastry tasted more like soft ice cream wafers, perhaps that might have been the impact of a long journey across the globe. Either way, I would assume this would taste better fresh.

"nihonboxjuly2021_5"

"nihonboxjuly2021_6"

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba returns once again in our Nihon Box, as we get a blind box from the Fuwakororin range. This series has six different character designs, all appearing as a mini round plush. The one I received is our lead man - Tanjiro.

"nihonbxjuly2021_7"

And now we get to our final item for Julys’ box, which is an Assassination Classroom towel. Why you may ask? A tad random maybe? Well Japan is damn HOT in the Summer, even during the matsuri festivals. So a towel is always essential to have on hand, especially for those that may be working and performing during these festivals. This ‘mini towel’, although pretty large in my opinion as you can see above as I hung it up on a door for size comparison. It’s bright yellow in color, with Koro Sensei’s face in the middle, with the shows title at the bottom of the towel.

So there we have it everyone, that was July’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from Demon Slayer, Assassination Classoom and The Quintessential Quintuplets, to the worlds favourite hologram diva - Hatsune Miku. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Night Matsuri”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about Natsu Matsuri, as they give a detailed description of the many types of matsuri festivals that take place around Japan. Mentioning their origins and the importance of these to local communities. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

Which ran with the theme - Natsukashi Vol 2. Which translated into English means Nostalgia Vol 2, as items included in this box takes us back to anime that came out in the 1980s. So let’s get started with the usual and all important info - how you can order your own Nihon Box subscription!

Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door.

If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from fan favorite Shonen Jump shows such as Dragon Ball and Shaman King, to classics such as Cat's Eye, My Neighbour Totoro and Dragon Quest. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime and cultural fans. This month's theme was “Natsukashi Vol 2 ”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”.

Overall: 10/10

“Dreamy Creatures”

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another ComicBuzz review! In todays’ post I took a look into what was included in SoKawaii’s June Box. The theme they ran with this time is “Dreamy Creatures”, which features six products from a number of licenses. Including Studio Ghibli, Sanrio, Pokémon and Kirby. So let’s get started on our usual description of what SoKawaii is and what they have to offer you!

Now if you enjoyed June’s box, then just wait for July’s! It’s theme is “Enchanting Matsuri”, which will feature a number of items from Sumikko Gurashi, Sanrio and Rilakkuma. That box is already sold out and on the way to me and will include a Sumikko Gurashi electric hand fan! Shame the Irish heatwave has already been and gone! Stay tuned to SoKawaiis’ social media, as they announced their themes, sneak peaks and opinion polls on what fans want to see next in their boxes. They are very active on their Instagram and really listen to what their customers are looking for – so go have your say now!
