We played through the first story: Plymouth Point - A Missing Person Hunt. In this story, Ivy Isklander has gone missing and it is our job to find her as we have recently just joined Plymouth Point Resident’s watch.

My team consisted of 4 players in total. One person on the team was sharing their screen as we looked through the clues. I found the experience to be very fun and interesting. It started off as a video call with an old lady which made it seem like it was real. The clues were easy to follow and were not very confusing. The only thing that was a bit obstructed was the one part where we were to find the second part of a recording but we could not figure out the puzzle until the clue was sent to us via chat.

"isklander1"

As another player on the team, what I liked about the game is that it was easy to play and ran smoothly. There were parts where things were easier to find, and solve and some weren't that easier. I personally really enjoyed playing and can’t wait to play the others!

"isklander1"

To be honest, I have never been in an escape room, so I did not know what to expect. I did see the trailer for how to play Isklander. I am happy to say it was a lot of fun and I did enjoy myself and it was much better than what I thought when I was looking at the trailer. To be fair as this was the first part of the trilogy, I did enjoy the setup and the story. I would have loved for it to have a few more live-action performances; as I think they were so engaging and hooked me in. I did have the odd network issue (that could have been on my end) but it was a little annoying. The time seemed to go so quickly but that could have been because I was having such a good time with my team trying to solve the escape room. I would like to play the other two parts of the trilogy to see what else Swamp Motel can do with this: reality adventure. I would recommend anyone who likes the idea of a virtual escape room to check it out with their friends and family, I am sure they will have a lot of fun.

You may have heard of Kingdom: New Lands which was a reworked version of the original game. As for Kingdom Two Crowns, it’s a sequel in the series. Kingdom Two Crowns is a 2D side-scrolling strategy game developed by three developers: Coatsink, Stumpy Squid and Fury studios. The publisher of the game is Raw Fury who has published other games like Atomicrops and Night Call.

Cooperative play is something that differs Kingdom Two Crowns from its previous games. You can experience the wonders of the game by yourself or with a fellow friend, locally or online. I appreciate the new multiplayer feature as it heightens the game’s level of fun. With the Dead Lands DLC (which is a free update to the game), players can switch between four new monarchs inspired by the game Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

"Kingdom

You start your journey playing the role of a king or queen who rides atop their horse. You enter a realm in which you have to maintain your kingdom. Gold is very important in this game since it can be used to turn peasants into loyal subjects. You need to flourish your kingdom with many subjects and have them occupy a job to help defend your kingdom from the night terrors. As night falls, greedy creatures come out to steal your coins and crown, and once the crown is obtained by the pesky creatures, the kingdom has fallen. So it’s important to recruit, hunt, and upgrade your kingdom. You can also explore the depths of the mysterious forests where you will find loot, structures, mounts, and more to help you sustain your kingdom.

Kingdom Two Crowns consists of five different Islands. Each island has the same playthrough, where the Monarch establishes its permanent kingdom to survive the greed of the creatures. But the islands do differ from one another, both in size and difficulty. As you progress through the game and make your way to the next island, things will start to get more difficult. You will encounter new and stronger creatures that will try to steal your crown. For you to travel to other islands, you need a boat, and the boat on its own takes a while to repair. Once you are set and loaded on your island you can be ready to move on to the next island, but the longer you stay away from an island, your buildings begin to decay which can always make things very tedious.

"Kingdom

The controls for Kingdom Two Crowns are simple and minimal. As the game is a side-scrolling game, meaning that you go from one side to the other, the only moving controls are moving to the left and right. You then have other controls like a sprint, drop, pay, mount special, and monarch special. Overall the controls work very smoothly.

When first starting Kingdom Two Crowns you are appointed with three “game skins” to pick from. What this means is that you have the original art style and then you have a reskin of the game where it includes Japanese style elements to the game. The Japenese reskin is called Kingdom: Shogun. What is interesting is that the Japanese style introduces things like a samurai as your character, a bamboo forest, different lighting, and other captivating details. The reskin of the game is very nice as it gives players a new perspective to look at. The other reskin is the Kingdom: Dead Lands one, where the atmosphere is more dreary and ominous.

The art style of this game, in my opinion, is alluring. Everything is very minimalistic, but it works so well with its beautiful pixel art aesthetic. The attention to detail put in this game is also incredible. The reflection that you can see off your character in the water, the little fishes that jump everyone now and then. Everything in the game looks so calm and wonderful. The trees are ruffled and the lighting is so well set too. You can ride through the forest and have it be where the forest background has light shining through peaks of the leaves. The grass, even the roots in the dirt, the bunnies, and the overall style of the kingdom is perfectly designed.

"Kingdom

On top of that, the soundtrack and the sound effects are fitting too. I do have to say that the art style and sounds complement one another to create such a lovely atmosphere. Sound effects like the ping when the gold is used, the river running, the chopping of the trees, really helps the player feel like they are actually in the game. The music is also so calming, as you ride your horse through the forest, soft mellow music begins to play which sets this fantasy feel for the mood. The aesthetic of this game is beyond wonderful and so pleasing to look at and play with. It truly sits greatly with the standards of a “Kingdom”.

Kingdom Two Crowns, is an extremely enjoyable, pleasant, strategic game that has an appealing feel and looks to make the player want to keep playing. The game gives a wondrous experience, which dives into a fantasy stylized atmosphere that can be worthwhile on your own or with a friend.

Overall: 9.5/10

Developer: Monkey Moon, Blackmuffin

Platforms: PC, Switch, Xbox One (Reviewed)

Genre: Indie, Simulation

Publisher: Raw Fury

Night Call is a developed by Monkey Moon and Blackmuffin. The game is published by Raw Fury who published other games including Atomicrops and Kingdom.

In Night Call you play as a Parisian cab driver. You are not a detective, nor a cop, just a “regular” cab driver. The experience between a driver and its passenger can be intimate, thus the knowledge that the driver holds from these differing conversations can be the key to cracking the case. Whilst in the midst of everything, you are scarred by an encounter you previously made with a serial killer on the loose. Due to your gloomy past, suspicions were directed at you, but you take it into account to help the police successfully identify the real criminal. You are given five suspects and your task is to gather as much relevant information as you can. This is done by conversing with your passengers, selecting certain suspects, or allocating locations on the map.

"NightCall_1"

The controls for the game are pretty straightforward. There is not much when it comes to the controls other than selecting items or moving things around. The necessary buttons that are needed to continue with the game show up at the bottom right of the screen.

Night Call consists of three different case types. Each case has a difficulty selection that you can pick from. The three different cases all play similarly with some scenes repeating. There are five possible suspects from which you must identify the killer. The game can be difficult as sometimes the clues aren’t helpful as they should be. The selection of the passengers on the map can be puzzling, it isn't clear what you are looking for to progress to the next step. Judging the passenger on their fare or destination doesn’t always mean you will get some revelation. It’s important to note that the mystery aspect of the game isn’t as appealing after you have just played the game a few times.

"NightCall_2"

There's also a "Free-Roaming" game mode. Within this mode, players focus on the interaction between them and the passengers without the mystery aspect of the game. This game mode is interesting as you can encounter a lot of peculiar personalities.

The noir art style sets a mysterious, ominous mood that fits seamlessly with the style of the game. The black and white setting of Paris truly sets the atmosphere of the game. Many scenes are located in the cab, but you also have scenes in the studio and the gas station. The screen is cut into half, the bottom half looking like the inside of the cab while the other half is a map tracking the GPS. When you reach your destinations, the background will change, and other times you’ll see rainfall. The subtlety of the art style works extremely well to set the mood of the game.

"NightCall_3"

I do have to say that both the soundtrack and the different scenes in the game very well complement each other. The soundtrack for Night Call is soothing, for some scenes of course. The tone of the music fits well with the scene. Other times you will have scenes where a passenger is nearby threatening you and the music is rougher and intense. The soundtrack and the storyline really accompany one another to create a mysterious ambience.

As stated earlier, this game is narrative-driven, meaning that every time a passenger is encountered or a clue is obtained you play the game with greater knowledge over the same story. This game involves a lot of dialogue, I'd like to see a feature to allow dialogue to continue without the need for pressing a button to progress the dialogue.

"NightCall_4"

Another interesting feature would be the clipart next to certain dialogues that you can pick from. When conversing with passengers you tend to get a couple of options to pick what to say. Sometimes, these options have different clipart indicating the tone that would be delivered. For example, smiling clipart indicates that the dialogue is meant in a funny, not so serious way. This is useful for narrative-driven games as sometimes your choices can have an effect on the other’s response.

Night Call is a great experience for anyone who likes a good mystery. Something about this game that should be applauded for is the narrative and the atmosphere. The in-game conversations flow so well. The authenticity created is immersive, and on top of that having to try to solve a murder mystery sets the bar high. There are certain things that can linger that experience, but nonetheless, the game is beyond compelling. From it’s story to the corkboard full of suspects and clues, the experience really stands out.

Overall: 7.5/10

Developer: SMG Studio, Devm Games

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One (Reviewed),

Genre: Action, Casual, Indie, Simulation

Publisher: Team17 Digital

Moving Out is a cooperative moving simulation game developed by the Swedish studio DevM Games and Australian developer SMG Studio. The game was published by Team17 who have also published the well-known game Overcooked. Moving Out has similar characteristics to Overcooked but with a different concept.

Moving Out can be played both in single-player and multiplayer. You can have up to four players on the screen. The game does not support online multiplayer but the game is much more fun while playing local couch co-op. There are several characters that you can pick from as your mover. As you progress through the game you tend to unlock more. You also have an option to customize your character with different accessories, making the character selection more fun and “creative”.

"movingout1"

The concept of the game is very straightforward. You are playing as movers that try to move objects into a truck while trying to work alongside very messed up physics. It doesn’t matter if things break, or if you have to slap several things out of your way, as long as they get into the truck one way or another then you are very much successful. When playing a level there is a time limit in which you have to try and get the objects in the van. The more time you take the lower the rank you get. The game has up to 30 levels which vary in design, items, and other things. The game reveals secret objectives for each level after you finish playing that level. You can go back to the secret objectives by playing the level again. By completing the secret objectives you can unlock mini-games.

The controls of the game are straightforward. When starting the game you start off in a tutorial which explains the controls. The buttons include grab, emote, jump, throw/slap, hints and moving around. The hint button is very useful as it shows which items require one person or two people to carry them. When in-game the controls can be frustrating especially when playing with another player. This is evident when two players are carrying an item through a tight area or enclosed space, for instance, a doorway or narrow hall. Players with diverging movement leave both players annoyed. The throwing control is also a bit finicky as the aim can sometimes make it seem like the item won’t make it even though it does. Nonetheless, all the controls are easy to work with.

"movingout2"

Something interesting found in the game is the option of Assist Mode. As you progress through the game it gets more difficult and at times you very much would like to give up because it can get irritating. With Assist mode, players are able to adjust the different mechanics and the game difficulty. They can change options like having objects disappear on delivery which saves up time by trying to get things to fit in the truck. Also, options like; having longer time limits, skipping a certain level if you have failed, and having the two-player items become much lighter so it's easier for one player to carry. Assist mode makes it easier for players to help themselves if they’re stuck on a level to blow off some steam.

The art style of Moving Out is very cartoonish but amusing to look at. Each level/house has its own layout which is very well detailed from houses in space, to a normal one-person house. The map is very well designed making it easy for you to drive the truck around to the different houses on the map. The movers are also nice looking. In all, the game has this cartoonish look to it, (similar to Overcooked) but it gives a realistic feel to it too. They have simple details like yanking wires when moving the fridge and breaking the screen of the TV when you drag it across the floor. These tiny details make the game very interesting.

"movingout3"

The soundtrack of the game goes well with the feel of the levels. The normal house levels have amped up music playing in the background which goes well with the level. When playing a themed level, like the haunted house one, you have spooky but fun music playing which works very well with the level. I appreciate the different sound effects for each item when interacted with which creates a better atmosphere for the game.

Moving Out, in all honesty, is very fun is a game that everyone can play. Yes, at times it can get frustrating and challenging but being able to play a game with ridiculous physics with your friends or family, creates a very enticing feel. The mini-games and objectives add more to the game which increases the fun as well. If you enjoyed Overcooked then you’ll definitely enjoy Moving Out. It is a fun local co-op game that everyone can enjoy!

Overall: 8/10

Developer: Ghost Town Games

Platforms: Xbox One (Reviewed), PC, PS4, Switch

Genre: Action, Casual, Indie

Published by: Team17 Digital Ltd

Overcooked! 2 is here it's the sequel to the chaotic cooking game that was released in 2016.

Overcooked! 2 can be played as a multiplayer or singleplayer experience. You can have a total of up to four people playing locally, or online. You play as chefs that return back to the Onion Kingdom where the Onion King chants a spell for culinary greatness not knowing he’s unleashed the Unbread. The Unbread are hungry and you have to prepare dishes for them so they can go back to being dead bread. You must feed as many customers as you can with your dishes while working in some very crazy kitchens. You must travel high and low making your way across the Onion Kingdom.

The controls to Overcooked! 2 are very straightforward. You have buttons that include pickup/drop, chop/throw, emote, dash and also moving around. You are not presented with a tutorial but through each loading screen, a controls scheme is presented. Also if you play single player you have the ability to switch between chefs that also has its own button.

"overcooked2_1"

The art style of overcooked is very cartoony but it has a unique style to it. Each level has its own setting and details to give each its own flavour. The dishes include sushi, salad, pizza, cake, pancake and much more they all look so yummy. The level select map is so much fun and adds so much character to the game. The chefs are also very well designed. Each chef has its own charm and style. The graphics of this game are also very clean and stylised which adds to the cartoony feel of the world.

The soundtrack choice of Overcooked! 2 is very nice and soothing. When playing a certain level like the sushi level you have music in the background that has a sort of an Asian vibe to it. You also have music that’s very enticing when your time starts to run out adding to the overall chaos of the gameplay. The music for the map area is so soothing and has a very calm vibe to it. I also appreciate the different sound effects for certain things when playing a level, like when you serve the right dish you get a ding noise or when you serve a wrong dish you get a buzzing sort of noise, as well as when things are about to burn there is an alerting noise. This really helps the player out when there is so much going on in the level.

"overcooked2_2"

In Overcooked! 2 the levels are focused on you preparing a bunch of dishes and serving them. You must prepare the dishes in a certain amount of time before the customer leaves. For each level, you have a certain amount of time to get as many coins as you can at the end of each level these coins are converted to star rating out of three. Some stages include you cutting, boiling, steaming, cleaning plates, cooking and even frying in order to make a specific dish. Speed is of the essence the quicker the dishes are served the more tip you get and the greater your score is. You have to prepare each dish in very chaotic scenarios. As the game progresses the kitchen becomes more challenging including working in a hot air balloon, working with portals and working over water. Sometimes if you are not careful you can set the kitchen on fire if a dish starts to burn, then you have to use the fire hydrant to put it out.

"overcooked2"

Each world in Overcooked! 2 has six levels to them. Some worlds also have a bonus level that can be unlocked if you have enough stars. The progression in the game is handled by unlocking the world using stars. Each level is rated by three stars depending on how many coins you collected in each level. The stars are then added you and used for progression.

Overcooked! 2 is a game that everyone can play and enjoy. It can be challenging and chaotic at times but overall is a really fun game to play with your friends or family. The game includes many modes like arcade, story or versus which you can play while challenging people online or your friends and family locally. Overcooked! 2 is a fun game to play if you wanna play something that's different to any other game out there, then this is the game for you.

Overall: 9/10
;
