“Dark Birthday”

Hello everyone, look what just turned up on my doorstep!

My missing Nihon Box from February finally arrived, just days after my January box decided to make an appearance. Looks like I’m finally caught up now on all my MIA boxes, so reviews should be in perfect order from now on. Anyway, Februarys’ box was a pretty important one as it was celebrating Nihon Boxes 6th anniversary! And what a milestone it is, as they have not only survived a fairly niche market but also a worldwide pandemic! Super proud of them and it makes it even more special being a customer.

So let’s get onto the usual tidbits about this service. Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to for what I find a very affordable price each month.

Like SoKawaii, the more months you pay upfront the cheaper the price for individual boxes will be. https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

3 Months is a single payment of €86.97, making each box €28.99, plus shipping costs.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxfebruary2021_1"

Onto our first item this month, we have a very pretty looking origami set from the Studio Ghibli movie ‘Spirited Away’. This product is not only made in Japan, but the art of paper folding just screams Japanese culture. The first recorded mention of the artform comes from a reference to a paper model in a short poem by Ihara Saikaku in 1680. This particular set includes traditional origami paper and sets where you can construct various characters from the movie. Great for display purposes and even comes so well packaged, that it would also make a lovely gift.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_2"

Our second item is for all you snack lovers, as February's box included a rather large bag of Fugashi. The packaging for this one reminds me of a cow-print, so its rather confusing in its advertising. It’s actually a rather old snack that dates back about 150 years. It’s a wheat flour based bar that is just covered in brown sugar. Just plain and simple really, there seems to be a number of Japanese snacks like this. Either Way, seeing as the shipping took so long, this item was about a month out of date by the time I got it. So perhaps it will be included again in a future box.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_3"

Our third item is one I don’t really don’t know what to do with yet. As it’s this beautiful blue sakura patterned plate. Its quite unique, as I don’t know if you can really tell from the picture, but it has an almost water droplet effect on the plate. As though the raindrops had frozen in the moment, to create this unique texture and pattern on the surface. It’s one I never plan on using, as it has to be for decorative purposes in my eyes. This item is also made in Japan, and includes a signature on the back of the plate, so you know it was handcrafted. I just wished the pamphlet included some information on who created this piece.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_4"

We are now back to the anime merch, as we have a familiar bull dog clip plush and a figure. The plush clip is from the latest fan favorite show from Shonen Jump - Jujutsu Kaisen. We have gotten similar bull clips in the past from both SoKawaii and Nihon Box, when they included the Demon Slayer range. These are strong clips, unique in that its also a miniature plush but is also kind of awkward when you try to figure out how best to either use it or display the item. This particular one was available in six designs, of which I seem to have pulled the main character Yuji Itadori. On the right is our largest item in the box, and that is a Noodle Stopper figure of Hiei from Yú Yú Hakusho. Now these figures are usually in more relaxed poses, mostly with characters sitting down as they are created in such a way that they balance on top of your ‘pot noodle’ or ‘cup ramen’ as its ‘cooking’ away. Its a fairly well detailed figure, unfortunately I don’t really know much about the show other than it came out in the early 90’s and is almost as old as myself. Always nice getting figures in a box, although this one might be a bit too niche going by how old the show is.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_5"

We are now onto our final item of the month, which brings us back to a far more recent anime hit - Demon Slayer. This time we got a decorative lamp that had several characters labeled around the side, including Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu and Inosuke. With the off/on switch positioned underneath the lamp, you will also need 3 AA batteries to power it. It gives off a fairly decent amount of light, and also projects the Kimetsu no Yaiba logo from the top onto your ceiling. The bulb also changes color slightly from time to time, so its still a rather decent lamp. More for display purposes than practicality though I say.

"nihonboxfebruary2021_6"

There was one last piece in this box, and it was a special note from the folks over at Nihon Box. A lovely printed, decorative card with some touching words on how they have survived this long to make it to their sixth year in business. It’s really worth reading, so please take a moment to. They have also mentioned that they have several surprises coming out this year, and most certainly one of those is their new venture - Yatta Japan (https://www.yattajapan.com/en) Where you can buy many of the items that were included in previous boxes, as well as new figures, snacks, manga and more. All on the one website. Worth checking out, as they also have their own rewards scheme for every time you buy from them.

So there we have it folks, that was another Nihon Box - although it was fairly late in arriving. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from classic shows such as Spirited Away and Yú Yú Hakusho, to the newer franchises including Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime fans and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Dark Birthday”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about Setsubun - the demon hunting day and why it is celebrated in Japan. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

“Mysterious Spring”

Hello everyone, hope you’re all doing good!

With international shipping methods beginning to return to normal, postal restrictions have started to be lifted. So instead of waiting another year to receive a bunch of backdated subscription boxes - I have instead received this years’ March box from Nihon Box! Even though I am still waiting on January and February boxes to arrive, let’s just get this review started!

Much like SoKawaii, Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to for what I find a very affordable price each month.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxmarch2021_1"

So let’s begin with our first item - which is a ‘Beastars’ shoulder bag. From the hit Netflix series that got everyone discussing ‘furries’ all over again, it was adapted from a manga series of the same name and animated by CG studio Orange. With a second season not far off in the horizon, now is the perfect time to start wearing this bag around the town as Netflix continues their advertising campaign for the show.

This cross shoulder bag isn’t massive by any means, but is perfect for those that only plan on carrying just their phone and wallet as they travel about. It’s handsfree, strong built and I say it would hold up rather well in the rain with its hard plastic coating that covers the design on the front of the bag. Although the picture is a tad unusual, it will make complete sense to fans of the show. For others that are unaware of its existence - it may need a slight explanation. As it features our lead wolf - Legoshi clutching our white rabbit Haru. It’s a useful product, but the design may just be hitting a specific fanbase for this one. Kind of wish they were able to acquire a different image for the print.

"nihonboxmarch2021_2"

Next up is our Japanese snack - which this month is a Sakura flavored Dorayaki. Now this product was absolutely delicious and did not last very long in my home.

“Dorayaki is a type of Japanese confection. It consists of two small pancake-like patties made from castella wrapped around a filling of sweet azuki bean paste.”

Or in this case, Sakura flavored filling. Each of these treats came individually wrapped, so they remained super fresh. Perfect to have with a cup of Green Tea or as a small reward to yourself to help you keep motivated throughout the day. The flavor wasn’t overpowering in the slightest, it was very pleasant and had a sweet taste to it. Well worth checking out this line of Japanese confectionery if you ever get the chance. The sakura filling also symbolized the start of the very short lived Sakura/Cherry Blossom season in Japan.

"nihonboxmarch2021_3"

Next up we have two more anime related merch, beginning with a retractable keychain from Detective Conan. This rather large rubber keychain has a clip at the top so you can attach it to your bag or pants loop, whilst the bottom has a ring hoop for your keys. This clever and stylish looking item was available in four characters including Conan Edogawa, Shúichi Akai, Tooru Amuro and Kaitó kid which is pictured above.

The second item in this picture is of the recently released Evangelion Coo’nuts, which have become very popular amongst convenience stores in Japan. These small little objects always have perfect balance and will not fall down when you push them. They are a quirky little toy that always seems to be coming out with new anime collaborations, with Evangelion becoming the latest. This series features 16 characters from EVA, of which I got Asuka Langley!

"nihonboxmarch2021_4"

Our next item this month is *another* set of chopsticks - which isn’t too bad when you see that it is in fact a Sakura designed chopstick and spoon set. Which is a lovely addition to the cutlery drawer when you discover that these were in fact made in Japan - and not China for once! Would love to see some bowls or plates with similar styles being included in future boxes. Perhaps one day it may add up to a set!

"nihonboxmarch2021_5"

Next up is this rather adorable Rem plush from Re: Zero. I have yet to get into this franchise, but it must be a very popular one as there is new merch constantly being released every month! This character plush is quite large and very well detailed, it definitely has that cute ‘moe’ factor about her. For me the eyes on it are very striking and have such a cute plush on the cheeks. I’m very particular about plushies and figures, but this one here is exactly what I would be looking for in merch. It has a perfect resemblance to the anime character. This is the ideal companion for any Re: Zero fan I believe.

"nihonboxmarch2021_6"

And finally we are down to our last item, which is this Pokémon ReMent figure from the new Stained Glass Collection. These sets are always a joy to get and I can never fault the ReMent brand. The designs have always been so creative and flawless, with a story to tell and picture perfect scenes. This collection had 6 designs, including Ho-Oh, Lugia, Mew, Gardevoir, Umbreon and the above Pikachu.

Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from classic shows such as InuYasha, GTO and Detective Conan, to the newer franchises including The Promised Neverland, Demon Slayer and Re: Zero. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime fans and cultural fans. This box's theme was “Mysterious Spring”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month's topic was about Sakura and why it is the symbol of Spring in Japan. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

“Dreamy Creatures”

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another ComicBuzz review! In todays’ post I took a look into what was included in SoKawaii’s June Box. The theme they ran with this time is “Dreamy Creatures”, which features six products from a number of licenses. Including Studio Ghibli, Sanrio, Pokémon and Kirby. So let’s get started on our usual description of what SoKawaii is and what they have to offer you!

For those of you that don’t know – SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 5 to 7 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep each month. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media accounts. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts, particularly their Instagram one – https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

"sokawaiijune2021_1"

So our first item this month is surely worth the price of the box alone, and that is the official Totoro plush from My Neighbour Totoro. Studio Ghibli merch is not cheap folks, especially on this side of the World. I have seen this exact plush go for £45 in HMV - and it’s not a massive plush by any regards! So for me, everything else in this box I may have just gotten for free cause this plush was definitely the cream of the crop. It’s super fluffy, plump, stands freely on its own and is an official merch. Although it doesn’t have its toothy, almost creepy looking grin - it is still adorable as heck and perfect to be put on display alongside your Studio Ghibli film collection.

"sokawaiijune2021_2"

"sokawaiijune2021_3"

Moving on we head on over to the world of Pokémon, with this highly adorable Pikachu masking tape. This item was available in four designs, all from the Pokemon Sepia Graffiti collection. Looking into it now, this is a fairly old release, as it first came out back in 2016. However the designs are still just as adorable all the same, I wouldn’t say no to another item from this collection being added again in a future box.

"sokawaiijune2021_4"

We are now onto our second Pokémon item, with this very large Face Towel. With two designs available at random in every box, one of which will feature both Pikachu and Eevee enjoying a relaxing nap. This super soft towel is quite large and is more of a hand towel in my eyes, than a face towel. It looks like 8 times the size of a face cloth and the picture I took of it above is with the towel folded over 3 times!

"sokawaiijune2021_5"

We are now back to stationary with this next item, featuring Kirby. June’s box saw everyone getting a set of two limited edition KIrby clear file folders, which were available in four regional designs. Including Tokyo, Osaka, Okinawa and Fujisan, with Kirby posing at each location. Now this is another older collection, as this was originally released last April. However it is quite adorable, but what does everyone do with their clear files? Do you display them, and if so how? Reach out to us on either Twitter or Facebook and tag us in your posts, to show us your clear file display ideas.

"sokawaiijune2021_6"

Our final two items are both from Sanrio, the largest of which is the My Melody circular floor mat in the picture above. Which is just one of three designs that was available at random in every box, the other two included Cinnamoroll and Hello Kitty. This mat is 50x50cm, probably amongst the smallest you can find and would be perfect to have at your computer desk. Better yet it has numerous anti slip bumps underneath, so it shouldn't go sliding about the place when you walk on it. The upside has a printed design of one of the three characters included, with the name in pastel print and a quote about the character underneath. This item was released in 2020, going by the trademark on the mat. It’s nice and soft, but I could easily see this getting stained very quickly and I’m unsure how machine washable it is. So best be careful with this one.

And our final item is a small Hello Kitty storage box. This clip-closed box would easily work as a small lunch box, for storing your washi/masking tape, for hair ties or even your medication as long as you don’t have small kids in the house that will be quickly drawn to such a cute box as this one. It also looks like a classic vintage Hello Kitty design, one that is sure to last the ages.

There we have it folks, that was Junes’ SoKawaii box. This month had a good mix of items, from decorative, storage, household and stationary from some iconic franchises. Now let’s get on to the all important information, for how YOU can begin your own subscription, as well as a special discount code just for you guys.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. SoKawaii are back to shipping their boxes via Japan Post, so delivery may take a number of weeks. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 Month – $35.00 (€29.00mo roughly)

3 Months – $33.50 (€28.00mo roughly)

6 Months – $32.00 (€26.50mo roughly)

12 Months – $31.50 (€26.00mo roughly)

Better yet, here is a $3 discount code that you can use on your first box by clicking this link!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you enjoyed June’s box, then just wait for July’s! It’s theme is “Enchanting Matsuri”, which will feature a number of items from Sumikko Gurashi, Sanrio and Rilakkuma. That box is already sold out and on the way to me and will include a Sumikko Gurashi electric hand fan! Shame the Irish heatwave has already been and gone! Stay tuned to SoKawaiis’ social media, as they announced their themes, sneak peaks and opinion polls on what fans want to see next in their boxes. They are very active on their Instagram and really listen to what their customers are looking for – so go have your say now! Also make sure and use that special discount code I left you all above!

“Dark Birthday”

Hello everyone, look what just turned up on my doorstep!

My missing Nihon Box from February finally arrived, just days after my January box decided to make an appearance.

‘Bakemono Story’

Hello everyone and welcome back once again to another subscription box review. Today let’s take a look at what was included in October's edition of Nihon Box. I have been looking forward to this particular box, as it will be focusing on Halloween so there is bound to be a good number of treats inside for all! This months’ theme is ‘Bakemono Story’, with Bakemono being another word for Yokai or creatures that change shape such as kitsune or tanuki, which are monsters from Japanese folklore. This months’ box also includes a number of items from a vast number of very well known anime franchises including Pokémon, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Assassination Classroom and Chainsaw Man. So let’s get this review started with a quick note on who Nihon Box is and how you can get your very own!

All of this is available to subscribe to monthly, just keep reading along to see just how affordable it can be.

Due to the latest European VAT legislation, the overall cost after shipping has increased slightly. The folks behind Nihon Box have done all they can to make this transition as simple as possible, so they have taken the necessary steps & changes in order to include the VAT directly in the subscription’s price. This change will normally be effective starting from the next renewal of your subscription, with the addition of the VAT in the final price (19% for Germany). And from August of this year, as a small gift of appreciation to their overseas customers they will be including a 1000yen gift card to their YattaJapan.com store. As an idea of how much the charge has gone up, prior to August I was paying €32.89 a month. The new price I pay now is €40.45 a month, which is a nice increase but I believe the value is still there within the box. Now once it arrived in Ireland, I have been charged customs through An Post. Totalling just under €9euro the first month, with this particular box being around the €10 mark on top of the €40.45 I pay each month, making this a rather expensive price hike in the end. However this is all due to inflation and the recent customs changes within the EU, whilst Nihon Box is still cramming in as much value into the box as possible from their side.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxoct2021_1"

Our first item this month is from Chainsaw Man, which has made a big impact in the anime and manga community in recent years and is set to be a massive success when the anime drops from Studio MAPPA possibly next year. Featured in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump, the story involves an alternate world to ours based in 1997 where humans true fears can become personified into monsters known as devils. These monsters are hunted by people known as Devil Hunters, with this show following one person in particular - Denji. So if you are a fan of the manga series thus far, you are sure to be excited about this item, as Nihon Box has included the above house mat featuring the Chainsaw Man himself getting ready to cause some carnage! Hopefully this will not be the last time we see this series being featured in the box.

"nihonboxoct2021_2"

Our next item is for all you Jujutsu Kaisen fans out there, with this strong cotton tote bag. A fine size indeed and one that would have been ideal for all of you going out trick or treating this past Halloween night. This bag was available in four different designs, each featuring a different exorcist from the series, including Gojo Satoru, Yuji Itadori, Nobara Kugisaki and Megumi Fushiguro. With each image being taken from a scene from the hit anime series.

"nihonboxoct2021_3"

Our third item this month features the most dangerous but nuturing teacher in the entire anime world - Koro sensei from Assassination Classroom. I have never seen such a well depicted plush such as this before, it has Koro sensei perfectly designed right down to the very last tentacle. There is something about his goofy smile that just encourages you to just keep going - ‘Ganbatte!’. The Assassination Classroom manga and anime franchsie both finished up in 2016, so it is so nice to see the show still getting so much love even today that a plush such as this has been included in the box. Well done to the team that handpicked the products for the box, ye all did a great job!

"nihonboxoct2021_4"

"nihonboxoct2021_5"

Now let’s continue as we get to the halfway point of this box. Next up is a Pokémon clear file folder from the ‘Sepia Graffiti’ range. Now I have actually lost track as to how many times this particular Pokémon range has been included in these subscription boxes, although it has become a tad repetitive it has also helped build up the collection if you have also been enjoying these particular designs. This particular clear file first went on sale back in 2018, so this design range is a bit old but mustn’t have done very well in its sales for Nihon Box to be able to acquire its remaining stock for its boxes. In my opinion the range is just adorable, with its classic Pokémon designs which reminds me of its early beginnings back in the 90s. A great piece of nostalgia for all us OG fans.

"nihonboxoct2021_6"

Next up is certainly a special sweet treat that I highly enjoyed consuming on Halloween. With this packet of Karintó Kuroppi, a wheat flour ‘biscuit’ dipped in black sugar and sprinkled with chopped peanuts. Don’t let the appearance fool you, (even though it does seem to resemble cat turds), it was oddly delicious and I certainly couldn't compare it to anything that we have over here in Ireland. It had a strong enough flavour and was more designed to just nibble on now and again. Unfortunately I managed to finish the entire packet whilst watching a few episodes of Gargoyles over on Disney+. The one good thing about this treat, is that seeing as it had zero chocolate involved there was no risk of anything melting during shipping.

"nihonboxoct2021_7"

So for the many of you that have already enjoyed Demon Slayer, you would remember that Tanjiro’s mentor Urokodaki wore a red tengu mask. Well there is a small porcelain one included in this month's box, very similar to the one seen in the anime but instead it features a white mustache and eyebrows. This is our ‘Made in Japan’ exclusive piece of culture and is also known as an Omen Tengu.

"nihonboxoct2021_8"

Speaking of Demon Slayer, each October box also included a gachapon from the show. Inside is a single character from the show, out of a total of six to collect. These mini figures are known as cable huggers and can clip onto the end of your charging cable in order to protect it from bending. And who did I get in my box, none other than the cry baby himself - Zenitsu.

"nihonboxoct2021_9"

And last but now least, we have our final item in this 1000 Yen gift card from Yatta Japan, which can be used on their website. Don’t delay in ordering for too long however, as these gift cards expire on New Years Eve. It can be used at check out, on all items except pre-orders. So watch out for that folks, also you can only use one card per transaction, Shipping is also a bit pricey for those of us in Ireland, as they only offer express shipping. Also don’t forget that you will have to pay Customs separately for anything from outside the EU through An Post when it arrives in the country. So it all adds up unfortunately.

So there we have it everyone, that was October’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from Demon Slayer, Pokémon, Jujutsu Kaisen and even the latest Shonen Jump hit - Chainsaw Man. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but they also make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Bakemono Story”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about the many cultural events that take place in October. From ‘Tomin no hi’ to ‘Sports Days’, to the latest international holidays they celebrate including Halloween and Oktoberfest. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

“Teens Power”

Hello everyone and welcome back once again to another subscription box review. As you may have guessed from the title above, today I am taking a look into what was included in the September edition of Nihon Box. Which ran with the theme of ‘Teens Power’, with items from such hit anime shows including Demon Slayer, Bleach, Tokyo Revengers and Kaguya Sama: Love is War. However this is all due to inflation and the recent customs changes within the EU.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxsep2021_1"

So let’s begin with our first item this month, from one of the biggest anime from the early 2000’s - Bleach. The show focused around Ichigo Kurosaki, who became a substitute Soul Reaper in order to save his family. Many of you would be very well versed in the happenings of this show, and rightly so! It is also about to make a comeback in the not too distant future, as they will be adapting the final arc of the manga - the ‘Thousand Year Blood War’. So in order to help us all cope with the franchise about to reach its final anime conclusion, Nihon Box has included this tissue box cover with Ichigo and Rukia on the front.

"nihonboxsep2021_2"

Next up is this bamboo fibre cup, featuring the main characters from the latest hit anime - ‘Tokyo Revengers’. An anime that features the lead character travelling backwards in time in order to save his friends from their untimely deaths and thus change the future for the better. Kind of sounds like Steins: Gate, but with middle school kids and a street gang. I have yet to start this show, but let me know in the comments below if my description was even close to the truth. Anyway this cup could either be used as such or simply as a bit of decoration, you choose. They have even hinted in the leaflet this month that Tokyo Revengers may be making a return in future boxes.

"nihonboxsep2021_3"

Now we move on to the traditional Japanese item for this month, with a ‘Tanuki Okiagari-Koboshi’. The Okiagari-Koboshi (起き上がり小法師, getting-up little boy) is a Japanese traditional doll. The toy is made from papier-mâché and is a roly-poly toy, designed so that its weight causes it to return to an upright position if it is knocked over. This one is made to look like a Tanuki, the same creature you would have seen in Studio Ghibli’s Pom Poko and the anime series ‘The Eccentric Family’. This item was hand made in Japan and is absolutely adorable.

"nihonboxsep2021_4"

Next up is our food item, with this packet of ‘ochazuke’ featuring Tanjiro and Nezuko from Demon Slayer. ‘Ochazuke is a simple Japanese dish made by pouring green tea, dashi, or hot water over cooked rice. Ochazuke provides a good way to use leftover rice as a quick snack because this dish is easy to make.’ This packet is in collaboration with Demon Slayer with its nori seaweed flavor and one of 18 collectable stickers inside the packet.

"nihonboxsep2021_5"

Next up is our Himouto! Umaru-chan item, in this incredibly vacuum packed pillow. This item features our main girl Lazy Umaru -chan as a super soft pillow. Made of ‘mochi-mochi’ material, making her very huggable, so you can just laze around with her and watch some anime. This series is a massive hit with everyone in the Nihon Box office, as they have said themselves that they have been wanting to include this franchise for quite some time.

"nihonboxsep2021_6"

Our figure for this month comes from the ‘Kaguya-sama: Love is War’ series, featuring Shinomiya Kaguya herself in her school outfit. This figure is from the Coreful Figure line from Taito, and features Shinomiya in her school uniform while placing a cute flower barrette in her hair! This figure was probably quite popular in the arcade machines in Japan when it was first released, its a good quality figure, sturdy base and has a simple, but elegant pose. Definitely one to buy for fans of the show.

"nihonboxsep2021_7"

And lastly we have the 1000 Yen Yatta Japan gift card, that can be used on their online store. However I must point out that these gift cards all expire at the end of 2021 and you can only use one per order over on their website. Something I only learned recently when placing my very first order. Now I don’t know if they will continue to include the GiftCards in every box from now on, or is this simply until the new year? Either way, it’s worth checking it out and availing of their new venture with Yatta Japan - https://www.yattajapan.com/

So there we have it everyone, that was September’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from Demon Slayer, Tokyo Revengers and the classic shónen series Bleach making a comeback. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Teens Power”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about the raccoon looking animal - tanuki. A native species to Japan, these animals have strong roots in Japanese mythology and even certain anime. Including the movie Pom Poko from Studio Ghibli. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

For more information on how you can order your own box, look to the top of this review and head over to the link below so you can sign up today!

https://www.nihonbox.com/en

SoKawaii - September

“After School Party”

Hello again and welcome back to another subscription box review! Today let’s take a good look at what was included in Septembers’ box from SoKawaii. The Japanese monthly subscription box service that gathers a number of super cute and sometimes exclusive items each month, packs them neatly into a very striking box and ships them right to your doorstep. September’s box ran with the theme of ‘After School Party’, as the new school semester starts for many of you out there. So let’s get started with our usual SoKawaii info!

"sokawaiisep2021_1"

Our first item this month is perfectly timed with going back to school, as we all received this Himouto! Umaru-chan pencil case. From the popular and short lived 2015 anime, we get this slim pencil case that is entirely decorated in Umaru-chans’ face. Featuring 13 various facial expressions that you are sure to experience throughout an entire school day! Like I mentioned it is fairly slim, so no point expecting to fit in a scientific calculator. Ideal for a couple of pens & pencils, as well as that all important Tipp-Ex pen so you can doodle a few mustaches on your new pencil case.

"sokawaiisep2021_2"

Moving on, we have a rather handy foldable straw and case from Sanrio. Available in four character designs, including Kuromi, My Melody, Cinnamoroll and Pompompurin. This set comes with two foldable straws, a cleaning brush and a small case that could very easily be mistaken for an airpod case. Now I say this is handy for the simple reason, those that have braces will find this incredibly useful.

"sokawaiisep2021_3"

Our next item features the wonderful keeper of the Clow Cards - Cardcaptor Sakura. In this mini ring notebook, with a hardcover and star shaped cut out design that showcases Sakura on the front page. Also on each individual page there is a little Kero-chan on the bottom corner. The pages are also dotted on the inside edge, so they can be easily be torn away for cute notes.

"sokawaiisep2021_4"

"sokawaiisep2021_5"

We return once again to Sanrio, with this My Melody magnet clip. A pretty useful magnet to keep on your fridge, to keep those all important school calendars or class timetables on hand. It has a fairly strong clip on it, as well as a pretty powerful magnet which is a plus.

"sokawaiisep2021_6"

And now we get to our final item for this month, with this Pompompurin Sakura plushie bag. Not only is Sanrio’s favourite Golden Retriever mascot carrying its own sakura flower, but he has also been dyed a soft pink color to match. This bag is so incredibly soft, if you could remove the straps it would make a great plush to just cuddle. However this plush is indeed a bag and a rather spacious one at that. Not only was I able to fit my phone lengthways, I would easily get in a wallet and keys. You could very possibly be able to go out for an entire day and still manage to just use this handbag for your necessities. It does have a rather long strap as well. When extended to its last it does come to just above my hip - and I’m 5ft 2”. As for practicality, I don’t know what way you would style your outfit around this bag. It is incredibly girly and from where I live, it would be seen as incredibly childish to walk around with. Once again this is another item we have been sent that is either only going to get an outing at an anime convention or on the streets of Harajuku if one was lucky enough to go. Personally, I think SoKawaii needs to start rethinking exactly what they should be including in their boxes as I am strongly thinking of ending my subscription in the new year due to the impractical items such as this bag that are regularly featured. But hey, that is just my own personal opinion and taste.

So that is everything that was included in Septembers’ box from SoKawaii. Let me know what you thought about it in the comments below, or tag us across our social media. For me, this month's box was a bit of a let down. Having received yet another notebook, straw set and plush bag. The same sorts of items are being repeated a bit too often now for my taste. Although most are indeed practical, there is such a thing as having too much of one thing. Either way, let’s continue on with how YOU can order your very own subscription to SoKawaii!

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. SoKawaii are back to shipping their boxes via Japan Post, so delivery may take a number of weeks. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 Month – $35.00 (€29.00mo roughly)

3 Months – $33.50 (€28.00mo roughly)

6 Months – $32.00 (€26.50mo roughly)

12 Months – $31.50 (€26.00mo roughly)

Better yet, here is a $3 discount code that you can use on your first box by clicking this link!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you enjoyed September’s box, then just wait for Octobers’! It’s theme is “Too Cute To Spook”, which will feature a number of items from Sanrio, Pokémon and Twisted Wonderland. That box is already sold out and on the way to me and will include an exclusive Cinnamoroll plush.

‘Summer Friends’

Hello everyone and welcome back once again to another Nihon Box review! August box was centred around ‘Summer Friends’, and included a number of products from some very well known anime franchises & two authentic Japanese items. As well as a 1000 Yen (10euro/10USD) gift card for Yatta Japan (https://www.yattajapan.com/). We have certainly been spoilt this month in terms of value. So let’s get started with the usual info.

And from August, as a small gift of appreciation to their overseas customers they will be including a 1000yen gift card to their YattaJapan.com store. As an idea of how much the charge has gone up, prior to August I was paying €32.89 a month. The new price I pay now is €40.45 a month, which is a nice increase but I believe the value is still there within the box.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxaugust2021_1"

First up is our largest item from this month's box, with the ‘Asuna Marine Version Figure’ from Sword Art Online: Alicization War of Underworld. Made by Taito and only very recently released in Japan during July this past Summer. So this figure is still very new this year, always a joy getting such newly released figures through Nihon Box. Asuna’s outfit consists of a navy sailor uniform, which showcases her long iconic hair. Although its not an outfit we actually see her wearing in the last season of the show, it does tie in with where she was on a secretive navy base at sea where Kirito was being kept. The figure is fairly good quality, similar to one you might see as an arcade prize in Japanese arcades. Around the 15 to 20 euro price range I would suggest, still far less than what you would pay at a convention with this particular figure going for in and around 30euro.

"nihonboxaugust2021_2"

"nihonboxaugust2021_3"

Next up is a plush for all you Seven Deadly Sins fans out there. Nihon Box has included a keychain plush of Hawk, the famous talking pig and Meliodas’ lifelong partner. The plush has all the iconic markings and details as the character from the show and is quite a good looking replica. This is sure to be a fan favorite for many of the shows fans out there. This was also included in August’ box as the Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by Light movie is still screening in cinemas over in Japan.

"nihonboxaugust2021_4"

Next up is actually a Loyalty bonus item that I received in my box this month. Not every box will be receiving one of these items, but something along the lines will be included in your third consecutive box if you have a subscription. This month I received an adorable Pokémon pen from the Sepia Graffiti collection that has been featured in many a Nihon Box over the years. Featuring a small group of Pikachu as they inspect a bottle of ketchup I believe, this pen will certainly be added into my collection right away.

In fact I can use it right away on this City Hunter ring notebook that was included in everyone of the boxes for August. This series will be a massive throw back for some people, as City Hunter was originally serialized in Weekly Shónen Jump back in 1985 by Tsukasa Hojo. So merchandise for this work has become very rarae to find, making even just this simple notebook a must have for devoted fans.

"nihonboxaugust2021_5"

We are now onto our authentic Japan section of the box, with this porcelain tea cup and green tea. First up is our Made in Japan tea cup, which is usually made with no handles. This one has a beautiful design called a tokusa, which is named after the long winter horsetail plant the stripes resemble. Like a finer looking bamboo, the imagery around the teacup bears a resemblance to a blue tinted bamboo forest.

As an added bonus, Nihon Box also included a packet of ‘Hyuganatsu’ Green Tea to enjoy in your new cup. This particular tea is a favorite amongst many during the Summer months as it can be enjoyed both hot or cold mixed with ice water. It’s flavor comes from a native citrus fruit grown in the city of Hyuga in Kyúshú. However once again, no instructions were included in how best to prepare this tea so some google searching will be required unfortunately.

"nihonboxaugust2021_6"

Next up is our Pokémon item, which features this all important first aid necessity - an ice bag. One of your all time best friends, if you manage to twist an ankle all of a sudden. Instead of using a frozen bag of peas or an ice pack, throw in some ice cubes and sit down with your legs elevated in style with this adorable Pikachu decorated ice bag. The strong insulating material will keep those ice cubes cold for a couple of hours so you can get some rest! I never knew how much I needed this in my life, until I got this month's box!

"nihonboxaugust2021_7"

And lastly we have the 1000 Yen Yatta Japan gift card, that I will certainly be using very soon over on their Yatta Japan website. However I must point out that these gift cards all expire at the end of 2021 and you can only use one per order over on their website. Something I only learned this past weekend, as I placed my very first order. Now I don’t know if they will continue to include the GiftCards in every box from now on, or is this simply until the new year? Either way, it’s worth checking it out and availing of their new venture with Yatta Japan.

So there we have it everyone, that was August’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from Sword Art Online, Seven Deadly Sins and Pokémon, to the classic series City Hunter. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Summer Friends”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about the history of tea in Japan, as they gave a detailed description of the historic timeline of tea through the centuries. Mentioning its origins, its cultivation and evolution over time in Japan. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

For more information on how you can order your own box, look to the top of this review and head over to the link below so you can sign up today!

https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Hello everyone and welcome back to another Nihon Box review!

In this article I take an indepth look at what was included in May’s subscription box. A tad late I know, but it appears the global c****a virus pandemic is still impacting the postal service. As there are few international flights available, leading to a lengthy delay on packages reaching their final destination. Either way, let’s get on with it. May’s box ran with an interesting theme, which was ‘Humanity’. It contained merchandise from no less than four anime franchises, as well as a traditional ornament and a tasty ‘wagashi’.

"nihonboxmay2021_1"

"nihonboxmay2021_2"

So let’s begin with our first item this month! Straight to the kettle we go with this Dr. Stone mug, the ideal size for a quick cuppa tea in the mornings. Dr. Stone first hit screens back in 2019 with the first season of its anime, season two finished airing in March of this year so people are still pretty hyped for this show. The plot follows a high school student named Senku, wise beyond his years, has a can-do attitude and is fascinated with science. Something that will certainly stand to him and the remaining survivors of mankind, when a sudden and mysterious event takes place that petrifies all of humankind into stone for thousands of years. It’s down to Senku and a number of other teenagers who broke free, to set about fast-tracking their way back to 21st century society. It’s a show well worth checking out, as its available to stream now over on Funimation and Crunchyroll. Physical release is handled by Manga Entertainment UK.

"nihonboxmay2021_3"

Our second item is one I am very excited about, as we get a porcelain mini samurai helmet. You can’t get more Japanese, than a Samurai ornament! This small display item is usually used as a decoration item during Kodomo no hi, a traditional holiday that celebrates children which takes place on the 5th of May. Japan is steeped in tradition as you well know, and there is a lot of history involving samurai. I would advise looking it up in your own time if you are interested. This item however is perfect as a holiday souvenir or gift. How would you display this Samurai mini helmet in your home?

"nihonboxmay2021_4"

We return once again to another anime related item, with this mini Cells At Work plush. Now I haven’t seen this anime, so I have no idea as to what it is actually about. From the look of it though, I would guess that the plot is fairly similar to the 2001 film - Osmosis Jones. Where cells in the body are sentient and with ‘lives’ of their own, fight against any foreign viruses or illnesses that enter the body they live in. The inner workings of the human body I guess, how very relatable to the World these past 18months. The plush is of one of the main characters - White Cell. This miniature plush will have no trouble finding a space to live within your plushie collection.

Now for a short snack break, as I sit back and inhale these two delicious Dekopon Monaka. These pastries are known as wagashi treats in Japan, which are small savoury treats that are usually paired well with green tea. The flavor was quite nice, as it had a rather generous dekopon filling. With a very homemade jam-like texture, dekopon are a citrus fruit that are quite similar to an orange. Sandwiching this filling together, are two small waffles. Very similar in taste and texture to a pair of ice cream wafers. An interesting treat, pleasant taste but not too sure about the waffles. They were a bit too crumbly and messy to eat.

"nihonboxmay2021_6"

Back now to another anime item, this time from the show Black Clover. This anime has been doing very well for itself since its debut back in 2017. With a total of 170 episodes in all and an anime film currently in the works, it has gathered quite a following of fans. With new merch continuously being released, it stands as another Shonen Jump long standing franchise. The item we received was a medium sized zip pouch featuring all of the members of the Black Bull Squad, including the shows main man Asta. A fairly roomy pouch inside, plenty of space for all those coins you will need for the arcades. Can also work as a make up punch, pencil case, purse, whatever you can cram inside really. Its a nice design on the front, with a strong zip but due to the way the pouch was made the image can be a little lackluster and almost looks like it was bought straight from ebay. That’s my own opinion however, others might find more value in this than me.

"nihonboxmay2021_7"

,The final item in May's box that everyone received, is this figure from ‘Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun’. Now this is another anime that I am fairly unfamiliar with, but going by the plot over on its Wikipedia page - it seems like a rather fun show. With Season One of the anime first debuted back in 2019, Season Two is currently airing as we speak. The plot follows a human teenage boy named Iruma Suzuki, who is sold by his parents to a demon. How he finds himself in the demon world, adopted by the same demon he was sold to and is now enrolled in the demon school his new ‘demon grandfather’ runs. Only trouble is, he can never reveal that he’s human - as he will be quickly devoured by all his classmates. So the figure we all received in this box was of the lead character Iruma and his friend Mofuego - who I can’t seem to find any information on online. Its a rather large figure of Iruma, well made, sturdy and definitely well painted. Can see no faults with it at all, definitely added to the overall value of the box. The figure could be hitting a niche portion of anime fans, as I believe that this anime hasn’t gotten much advertising to western audiences yet.

"nihonboxmay2021_8"

Now if you are a regular subscriber to Nihon Box, you are well aware of the added bonus item you receive for free every three months. May must have been my month, as I received a mystery bonus item from Square Enix (pictured above). Its a rather cute acrylic character set, the problem is I have no idea what this is from. If anyone knows, feel free to reach out to us on our social media by tagging @ComicBuzz in your responses.

So there we have it everyone, that was May’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from fan favorite Shonen Jump shows such as Dr. Stone and Black Clover, to the newer franchises including Cells at Work and Welcome to Demon School. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Humanity”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about Kodomo no hi, a traditional holiday that celebrates and prays for the growth and happiness of little boys.

‘Aki no Kizuna - The Fall Bonds’

Hello everyone and welcome back to another Nihon Box review, where today I take a look at what was included in November's box. So sit back and enjoy this Autumn season themed box. But first, a quick word about Nihon Box. The Anime and Japanese culture subscription box, with details on how you can sign up for your very own subscription.

All of this is available to subscribe to monthly, just keep reading along to see just how affordable it can be.

"nihonboxnov2021_1"

So let’s get started with the first item from November’s box, with this beautiful ‘Aki in Japan’ furoshiki. This piece of fabric is traditionally used to wrap up your bento or a gift, which is very eco friendly due to its reusability. Personally I will be using this as a decorative piece, although I haven’t decided how to as of yet. This particular furoshiki was made in collaboration with a professional craftsman in Kyoto, who has been doing this for the past fifty years. The design is based off of an Autumn scene featuring Mount Fuji in the background of a shrine.

"nihonboxnov2021_2"

Our next item this month is for all you Inuyasha fans out there, with this Sesshómaru noodle stopper figure. This boy has a bit of weight to him, that keeps him perfectly balanced when sitting on the edge of a shelf or indeed a Cup Ramen. This series of noodle stopper figures always have such unique poses, this one is no different. It’s well crafted, skillfully designed and indeed well painted. It can join my other Inuyasha noodle stopper on the shelf, which was included in September's Nihon Box from 2020.

"nihonboxnov2021_3"

We now move onto a slightly more recent anime franchise, with Haikyuu! This series follows a high school volleyball team as they compete in local matches, all the way up to nationals in order to repair their reputation with the assistance of a pair of talented new players. This series has a massive fanbase and Nihon Box has included it in this box with a Hug Chara Collection figure. This series of small plushies, are very cute but also useful. As within the arms will be a strong bull clip, which you can open and close by using the legs. With six characters to collect, every box will receive the main character of Shóyó Hinata.

"nihonboxnov2021_4"

We now move on to yet another Shonen Jump franchise with Hunter x Hunter. This franchise first began back in 1998 but has been on hiatus since 2018, but still carries a strong fan base. Due to this, it has been included with this Figurine Fuchipito collection from Re-Ment. With six characters to collect, these small detailed figures each have their unique pose and sit on top of a wooden box. Like the Noodle Stopper series, they are also designed to sit on the edge of shelves, die to how well they are balanced.

"nihonboxnov2021_5"

Our snack item for this month is the Kurobou Meimon. A traditional sweet and specialty of the city of Kurume, from the Fukuoka prefecture. Made from brown sugar, it carries its own unique taste that is unlike anything I have tried here in Ireland. It may not be for everyone's palette, as I didn’t find myself going back very quickly to finish the second one in the package.

"nihonboxnov2021_6"

So let’s begin with the item on the left, which is a loyalty item bonus that you receive several times during the year when you have a continuous subscription. It is always a delight to see what might be included for free every quarter. This time, it was a small keychain plush from the FairyTail and Mameshiba collab, but I can not seem to find when this is from so it may be an old release. It’s an interesting item no doubt and a collaboration I never would have put together, but it kind of works. It’s cute, right?!

On the right, is our new regular to every Nihon Box - a 1000 Yen gift card for their side company ‘Yatta Japan’. This time, the gift card is valid until next Summer. However at the moment, it doesn't appear to be a good time ordering from their website as the delivery option pricing is through the roof! At least for Ireland it is, no way I want to pay over €40 in shipping for items that barely come to €20. Fingers crossed they manage to sort this out in the new year, as I would prefer some economy shipping at least.

"nihonboxnov2021"

Our last anime related item of the box is the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba item pictured above. Which is known as an Eco Kairo in Japan, otherwise known as a reusable pocket hand warmer. I have not seen these items in years, not since I was in school. There is a gel inside that heats up as soon as a metal tab inside is broken, it just causes a chain reaction. In order to reuse it again, you just place it inside a kitchen cloth and then in boiling water. Within five minutes it will have returned to its original state, ready to be used again. Perfect for the current cold season. This is available in 10 character designs, all with their own unique backgrounds. Also in time for the latest season of Demon Slayer, which has just started airing over on Funimation And Crunchyroll.

"nihonboxnov2021_7"

And now onto our final item this month, with these Ukiyo-e coasters. This is a set of four coasters, traditionally made with washi paper. They feature images from four of the most famous Ukiyo-e paintings, including Kabuki (by Kunisada Utagawa), Meisho Hakkei (by Toyokuni Utagawa), Aka Fuji (by Hokusai Katsushika) and Two Women ( by Kitagawa Utamaro). All made by a company that has been specializing in washi paper for over 90 years. It is a shame however that neither the name of the company or any links to their work is never listed in the brochure. Hopefully they can add this information for future boxes.

So there we have it everyone, that was November’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from Haikyuu, Demon Slayer, Hunter x Hunter and Inuyasha. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but they also make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Aki no Kizuna”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about Momijigari, the hunt for Autumn. Where people go out of their way, to forests, mountains and even different prefectures in order to admire the changing of the leaves colors during Fall. It is also the perfect time to go out on a hike, as the Autumn brings a much needed break from the scorching Summer heat that Japan is known for. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but they also make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs.

So let’s get the ball rolling with our usual Nihon Box infomercial.

Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door.

"nihonboxmay2021_5"
