The one-of-a-kind feature THE END, directed by two-time Academy Award® nominee Joshua Oppenheimer, is set to be released in Irish cinemas on 28th March.

The film, which promises a uniquely cinematic experience rich with daring romance and song, stars Academy Award®-winning actress Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton), George MacKay (1917), Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals), Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit) and Bronagh Gallagher (A Bump Along The Way).  Shot in Ireland, it revolves around a wealthy family surviving in a palatial bunker, two decades after the world has ended. After the sudden arrival of a stranger threatens the family’s luxurious compound deep underground, their son, who has never seen the outside world, begins to question their seemingly perfect existence.

THE END marks Oppenheimer’s first fiction feature following the critical success of his Academy Award®-nominated documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, both of which explored the Indonesian mass killings of 1965-66. For this ambitious project, Oppenheimer teamed up with co-writer Rasmus Heisterberg to create a bold vision of life, survival, and family dynamics in a post-apocalyptic world.

Since its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, THE END has captivated audiences and critics alike at some of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival, the San Sebastián International Film Festival, and the BFI London Film Festival. The film had its Irish premiere at the Cork International Film Festival in November.

The feature was produced by Final Cut for Real with Wild Atlantic Pictures, The Match Factory, Dorje Film, Moonspun Films and Anagram with funding from Screen Ireland, along with the Danish Film Institute, Vestdanske Filmpulje and FilmFyn, in Denmark, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and MDM Fund in Germany, the Italian Ministry of Culture (MIC) and Sicily Film Commission in Italy, the UK Global Screen Fund and SFI and Film i Skåne in Sweden. The pan-Nordic Fund Nordisk Film & Tv Fond and the European fund Eurimage were also on board. The international co-production was co-financed by NEON.

Wildcard Distribution will be releasing THE END in Irish cinemas on 28th March.
