The first impressions of NBA 2K21 is a visual feast that will behold you. I'm a rookie at NBAs game and in general, I was impressed by the game. Off the bat, I don't understand the full mechanics and rules of basketball so my view is how the game plays from a limited understanding of basketball.

"nba2k21_1"

I haven't played an NBA 2K game in a long time, I'm new to the franchise. I found the realism and the mechanics of the game super smooth. I kept coming back for more. The visuals maintained a solid 60 fps at 4k with ray tracing support, the game moves slickly and has a good feel. It's a mixture of next-gen graphics, with the solid player likeness and little slow down when playing offline. Load times were super quick and once in-game, I didn't feel much of the annoyance of loading. It plays well once you understand the controls and how it plays, I had to do a few tutorials and practice games before I could actually play it. All the stars from the league are there. There is also a host of game modes such as MyCareer and MyTeam.

"nba2k21_2"

The MyCareer and MyTeam modes are heavy on the monetisation and microtransactions. I never liked the career modes in sports, the game, I feel the attempt to mix drama and sport through a narrative odd. I find it cringe. To be honest the story of the MyCareer mode is fairly cheesy but the path of progressing from high school basketball to college and the draft is a nice addition.

"nba2k21_3"

The MyTeam mode allows you to build your team and build up as you see fit, I have played the similar game modes in Fifa and I just don't enjoy this, I much prefer playing with the current crop of teams. I'm not a massive fan of microtransactions so it's also not my thing.

Online play, I found online gameplay a bit hit and miss, some games had little lag and others quite a bit. When there were no lag or internet issues, I did enjoy getting beat online quite a bit.

"nba2k21_4"

NBA 2K21 is lots of fun but I haven't been up to date with the series for a while. I love sports and the dynamics of a sports game, for me it was nice to revisit basketball and play something enjoyable and different to football. The core gameplay of basketball is something I kept re-visiting, the online modes were a bonus. If you like building up your team or building up yourself a player then the MyGamer and MyTeam will have you hooked.

Assassin's Creed has a long legacy of delivering open-world action RPGs and Valhalla continues this well-trodden path.

You take the reins of Eivor, the central character in this game and his journey of being a Viking in Norway in the 9th century. From the start, you get a background to Eivor's upbringing, his values and ideals. All these things will shape how you play the game and the choices you make. The game is a mix of wonderful huge open environments with towns, villages and cities dotted around the map. A mix of puzzles, combat and exploring the countryside and waterways too. Longships and boats are used as transport between islands. The game uses this to enhance your movement from place to place as well as horseback too. As with any Assassin's Creed games, there is an element of stealth too which is obligatory in certain parts of the story. However, for large periods of the game, it's up to you how you approach the world. The storyline incorporates the nomadic nature of the Vikings, their customs and beliefs.

"ACV_1"

The game is stunning, the environments, characters and all visual effects have the hallmark of an Assassin's game. In this action RPG, you roam the world completing the main quests and side quests to level up Eivor for bigger battles and wars that will come. I found plenty of variety in the gameplay, characters and stories. I liked that animus didn't feature as prevalent as previous outings. There was one time the game was interrupted to the modern-day, it did break the illusion of being in 9th century Norway. While I get the idea of the animus and the sci-fi elements of it plus to bring a cohesive narrative amongst the many stories, I preferred being in Eivor's world without the animus distractions. This is a minor gripe.

"ACV_2"

Action, fighting and combat elements are intuitive and impactful, the addition of special abilities means you can custom your fight style too. The game has a rich levelling up system that allows you to build your character as you see fit. Voice acting, cutscenes and dramatic interludes enhance Valhalla, I think the developers have managed to keep all the elements of the gameplay and story well balanced and addictive.

The Xbox Series X|S / PS5 supports a performance mode which adapts the resolution to keep the game running at 60FPS. Similarly, for these consoles, there is a quality mode that maintains the best resolution while maintaining 30FPS. The game features ray-tracing and dynamic 4K. More games should adopt this, it makes the gamine experience more predictable.

"ACV_3"

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is fantastic: the game has managed to mix RPG gaming elements, action gameplay, huge environments, stunning visuals, levelling up system, storytelling elements and puzzles into a cohesive game where it all fits together. Side missions and main missions all make sense. There is a wonderful cadence to the game, you become immersed in the world of the Vikings. I found it super-addictive and found myself coming back to either finish side quests or the main missions. I have to say it's one of my favourite games of the year. Addictive gameplay, stunning voice acting, graphics and amazing action in an open world.

Overall: 9/10

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the latest game in the hugely popular franchise of Call of Duty. In this outing, we are in the world of the Cold War in 1981. This game contains a single, multiplayer, and Zombies. It's back to the classics and staples for COD. The game runs at 120 FPS, 4K Ultra HD with ray-tracing.

"COD_BOCW_1"

The single-player is the mode I always play first despite how much fun multiplayer and zombies is. It's 1981, the Cold War is in full flow, you work as part of secretive CIA led operatives force who are trying to stop nefarious bad guys who are trying to destroy civilization. The story follows the backstories of agents and how they have been brought together and stop impending doom and nuclear war. There are a variety of level styles in the game from low-key stealth missions to all-out attack. The levels are narrative-driven and tie into the themes of stopping the nuclear war and fleshing out the story. The game draws from the previous COD games and modern FPS games, the level design, environments and levels provide a much-needed variety to keep it interesting. The narrative is interesting and is engaging which tries to contextualise that era. Levels, environments, voice acting are top-notch and evoke the era of Cold War 1981.

However, the campaign mode is short, the focus is on the much loved multiplayer.

"COD_BOCW_2"

Multiplayer is back with a bang if you have played any of the previous games, it will be a very much familiar mode. It contains a whole host of game types Team Deathmatch, Domination and Hardpoint. The new multiplayer mode is VIP Escort which does what it says on the tin, two teams where one is to protect the VIP at all costs and the other to kill the VIP. I have to say, I love the Call of Duty multiplayer games, there are tons of fun with a whole host of gaming types depending on your preference. There is a huge level of character and loadout customisation too. I'm a huge fan of the straightforward Team Deathmatch mode where two teams try to score the most kills. The simplicity of this game type is what makes it so fun.

The horde mode of Zombies is back too. In Zombies, the name of the game is survival against huge hordes of zombies. It's simple but tons of fun. This mode is particularly action-filled where you build up currency to get perks and weapons that will help you off the zombies coming for you. This mode is crazy, hectic, action-filled and full of zombies.

"COD_BOCW_3"

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has the staples that a COD fan expects, it has a solid but short story mode that provides some context to this series outing. The COD franchise is based heavily on the multiplayer and this is where it shines. The multiplayer provides updated maps and some extra tweaks this year. The game is familiar and lots of fun though. There is plenty of playability and replayability in the multi-player game, the main story has little replay value though. The level design, environments and voice acting are all done well. It's more of the same for COD and it's players. You can expect adrenaline-fuelled first-person action.

Samurai Shodown is a reboot of the 1993 SNK beat 'em up classic. This outing is the updated version using the Unreal Engine and bringing the game to current generation consoles.

"samuraishodown1"

If you have played the original or any incarnation since the original, you will be well accustomed to the original set of characters and the gameplay. It has that unique SNK beat 'em up style. Three new additional characters added to the roster. For the newcomers, this is a classic 1 versus 1 beat 'em up. You pit your skills against a singular for multiple rounds. It is a brutal action-filled game with lots of sword action. This SNK classic has the addition of weapons which made it stand out when it was originally released. Each character possesses an array of special moves that can take some time to perfect.

"samuraishodown2"

There is a training mode where you can hone your skills before you battle for real. The staple of a versus mode is available for quick local play (against CPU players or friends). The main game has a story mode where you battle through rounds of opponents to face the final boss at the end while jet setting from country to country to find other foes to beat. While the story mode follows a generic well-trodden path of single-player beat em up story modes it's fun in fairness, I usually play this mode first.

An online mode for playing anyone from around the world adds a huge replay value to the game. There is a battle mode where you try to beat as many players in a row. The game has a unique AI system that will learn the player's moves and allows for this AI to be created as "Ghost characters" that can be shared to play against too. There is in the inclusion of gore and finishing moves which can be turned off for those not a fan of bloody violence, think Mortal Kombat gore but without the over the top finishing moves. The game sees the return of 13 classic characters and the addition of 3 new characters that have enough diverse fighting styles to keep the hardened beat em up fan happy. Additional characters are available via Season passes too.

"samuraishowdown3"

The Series X version runs at a smooth 120 FPS. Owners of the previous-gen version can play on the Series X|S without any additional costs via Smart Delivery, any purchased DLCs is also transferable.

Samurai Showdown has that unique SNK fighting gameplay style brought to modern consoles. The superb art style combined with 120 FPS brings a lush gaming experience. A wide variety of characters with the new AI system and online play will mean this game is a must-buy for beat em up fans.

Beyond Light is the latest expansion pack in the series.

"destiny2_1"

Destiny 2 is a superb first-person shooter, the game mechanics, shooting and platform elements are slick. It feels and plays very smoothly. It's one of my favourite shooters, it has a mix of a good campaign mode with an immersive online mode. The Beyond Light expansion takes place on a series of new planets that you play through the campaign online modes. The levels and worlds have superb textures and maps. It is slick from the first moment. Destiny integrates the world and multiplayer seamlessly. The maps act as both places to engage in multiplayer activities and online sessions too, it's one hud for all. The action and sci-fi elements are superb, there is a huge range of guns, maps and online events. It makes great use of the next-gen consoles to give an amazing view of these imaginary worlds. Aliens and monsters are well rendered and detailed. The combination of rich level design, simple game mechanics and a fun shooter make this a joy to play. There is nothing groundbreaking, it's more refinement on the existing. I think expectations need to be set, that is just further improvements on Destiny 2 and not a remake.

"destiny2_2"

There are downsides to the game though, there is a grind to unlock other worlds by repeating the same events over and over again. The campaign is solid but is short. I'm a huge fan of the campaign modes in first-person shooters and a richer, longer story is always more enjoyable. The story, voice acting is done well and the game flows well.

Beyond Light expansion: Xbox Series X and PS5 support 4K 60 FPS gameplay while the Xbox Series S supports 1080p at 60 FPS. The PVP mode allows for 120 FPS on the newer consoles. Cross-play is available in each console family. This does bring a sense of next-gen performance and gaming to the new consoles. Observer: System Redux is a psychological horror thriller set in a futuristic cyberpunk world. You play the role of Daniel Lazarski (Rutger Hauer) an observer detective. You investigate an anonymous call and you follow this journey through this dystopian world.

The first thing is the striking visuals mixed with the mixture of cyberpunk elements, modified humans and a sense of unease of your surroundings. It's a first-person detective game where you have to get to the bottom of a series of strange events. As a neural detective, the key elements involve investigating crime scenes using your additional powers (human mods). There is one critical ability which is the ability to hack the minds of humans. Observer draws on this gameplay mechanic to help further the investigation. It's also used for dramatic effect to provide further tension, suspense and horror to the game.

"observer_r1"

The voice acting is superb, the interactions with NPCs is fantastic, there is an amazing amount of detail. Corridors and hallways are dimly lit, it's a dark world with neon lights that stand out. The artwork, levels and the whole game combines all the aspects superbly. The game is linear but there is a wonderful build-up of the atmosphere, tension and dread throughout. The voice acting and characters you meet make each interaction noteworthy and interesting. It all plays into this fantastic horror game. The tone, music, and effects all add to the air of uncertainty too.

"observer_r2"

I played on the Xbox Series X, this version has updated graphics (textures, models and effects), the graphics look superb and provides a much-needed update for next-gen consoles. PS 5 and Xbox Series X support 4K at 60 fps, this is with no ray tracing.

"observer_r3"

Characters, details, voice acting and cinematics add a superb sense of dread, horror and an uneasy sense to the whole game. This game has a tense and thrilling atmosphere that underpins the whole game. It's eerie, moody and full of dread. The game gets the mix of cinematics and cyberpunk elements right. All the elements work amazingly well together.
