This book tells the story of Rikt, a young headstrong Goblin who is on a quest for revenge against the blood-thirsty human that struck down his family. Now alone in the World, he travels far in search of a weapon that can bring down the wicked human. He encounters many individuals along the way that both shape his character and reveal the true nature of Goblins to all those he meets. His quest is a perilous one, full of danger and heartache. However, through this journey, Rikt begins to understand his fathers teachings and how to rely on his Goblin instincts.

Goblins - are a sub humanoid race in Dungeons & Dragons. Where they are described as being “small, black-hearted, selfish humanoids that lair in caves, abandoned mines, despoiled dungeons, and other dismal settings. Individually weak, goblins gather in large — sometimes overwhelming — numbers. They crave power and regularly abuse whatever authority they obtain.” If you are a follower of Critical Role, you would know that one of the main members of the Mighty Nein is Nott the Brave - a goblin. Who has similar characteristics to our Rikt, in that neither of them really resemble much of what we have learned about the goblin race to date. In this story, Rikt lives with his parents. Supposedly secluded away from other Goblins. They also have a unique religion, similar to that of the Wild Mother in D&D. Rikt’s father tries to teach his son that he should not believe the evil things that others expect to be true of Goblins. That they are in fact a peaceful race, close to nature and do not wish to be harmed/disturbed. In just the first few pages, this book has already dispelled the majority of the opinions I already held against Goblins. So now it has my full attention.

"goblin1"

Rikt appears to be a youngish teenager, rash, full of opinions and always up for a fight against his parents. Through some devastating events he finds himself all alone, tasked with the job of laying his folks to rest before setting off on his path for revenge. So very early on he is taken advantage of by ‘fairies’, he learns some life lessons and happens to still show some kindness along the way to those in need. Over such a short space of time, he matures and learns the consequences of his actions. The ending is a true test of character and strength for Rikt - one I didn't believe he would be capable of from the beginning of the book.

So this book tells the story of Rikt, an underdog in every meaning of the word. Who in turn achieves great things after suffering many trials and hardships along the way. His tale is one full of tragedy, but he still manages to have plenty of adventure and touching moments. The ‘villain’ of the story was a blood thirsty, tattooed human who also sought his own revenge. Although our villain took a more evil route to achieve his goal, it ultimately left him alone in a castle full of bones. His story struck Rikt, ultimately changing his life’s path for good.

"goblin2"

“Goblin” was created by author Eric Grissom, whose comic works include Deadhorse, Tom & Violence, Animals, and the space adventure comic - Planet Gigantic. Of which you can check out his social media links here through Twitter: @egrissom and over on Instagram: @egrissom. As well as his works over on ComiXology: https://www.comixology.eu/Eric-Grissom/comics-creator/8446.

Then we have Will Perkins, the illustrator for “Goblin”, who is also an amateur paleontologist - which is a pretty neat hobby actually. His works have included Gregory Suicide, Beware…, Fubar American History Z, Sealand Forever and Planet Gigantic. All of which you can find over on his official website: https://www.willperkinscomics.com/

Not only has this pair of talented individuals created a really memorable graphic novel, but they have also designed a D&D one shot that is set in the same universe as Rikt. Which all you DM’s can download now for free in the link below.

This story has certainly taught us one thing and that is you truely, can never judge a book by its cover - as Rikt stands against the many stereotypes that we have all come to learn about Goblins overtime.

For the uninitiated, Ratchet & Clank is the much-praised third-person platform shooter developed by Insomniac Games. Ratchet & Clank are the dynamic duo trying to save the world.

The story follows the main characters Ratchet & Clank as they get thrown in between dimensions to defeat the evil Doctor Nefarious. The game features an entire story that requires little knowledge of the franchise, so those new to the series don't need to know anything about prior games. It's a standalone game in that sense and the narrative is akin to a cartoon action film with excellent cinematics. The story and plot are developed by completing a series of missions across the galaxy, each different planet having its enemies, characters and unique terrain. The rift apart in the title refers to the interdimensional travel in the game where you will get to play as another Lombax known as Rivet. Story-telling weaves in between the two playable characters, the narrative is maintained between switching characters. The switch between characters is seamless during the gameplay.

"RACRA_Hoverboots"

The gameplay is centred around fantastic platform action mixed with a third-person shooter. Both game genres are executed impeccably, the action is fast-paced and you have a plethora of guns that give a thrilling third-person shooter. The platform elements are challenging at times with many environments making use of a whole variety of gaming mechanics. Then there are puzzles, inter galaxy travel and a cohesive story underpinning all the gameplay elements. There is also character levelling up and weapon upgrade features too. It isn't as rich or as in-depth as an RPG but it does add more features to the gameplay, the levelling up is rudimentary in that sense. All these gameplay elements are combined into a cohesive fun game.

Progressing through levels you collect upgrades, bolts that allow you to purchase and upgrade weapons. While this seems like a small feature, I loved the sheer amount of weapons and what they do. The weaponry in the game is brilliant, it adds a whole element of another edge to the gameplay. Every time a new gun or game mechanic is introduced it is done in a well-paced manner, you won't be overburdened with game controls to learn all at once.

"RACRA_Ratchet"

Visually the game does nail the very detailed cartoon look and feel. The main characters are rich in detail and you can see the detail in the fur of Ratchet. Clank is similarly detailed and the use of contrasting colours are used effectively throughout. Every character you encounter is meticulously rendered. The cartoon art style is stunning and vibrant, it gives the world a sense of life.

The voice acting is superb, it does make the characters more relatable and personable. The storytelling mixes all the critical elements serious, funny and incredulous as needed. The cinematics and visuals do give off the sense of a playable movie.

"RACRA_Flyer"

Like with previous PS5 exclusive games, Ratchet & Clank makes use of the haptic feedback in particular. Like Returnal and Astro, the haptic feedback is used for triggering primary and secondary fire types of weapons. It does work well but this was the only real use of it in the game. Vibration and sounds through the controller are used to enhance the gaming experience and cinematics.

The game allows you to choose what difficulty suits you, you can make it as tough or as easy as you want. No grinding required unless you want to.

"RACRA_RivetFixerGrab"

A day-one patch (performance mode & performance RT) will be released that will allow for dynamic 4K at 60 fps and dynamic 4K at 60 fps with ray-tracing. The game was reviewed with the quality mode playing 4k at 30 fps.

Along with the performance improvements some minor updates will be available in the day-one patch such as photo mode updates, skip cinematic option, accessibility updates and general improvement and polish.

"RACRA_Warmonger"

Ratchet & Clank melds the genres of 3rd person shooter and a platform into a fun game and rewarding game. The game is paced well with plenty of upgrades, side missions and collectables to keep you busy in-between the main story. The cinematics give the feel of a cartoon movie and the voice over is superb and it does give the story more credence as it makes it seem more believable. There are a ton of guns to get as you progress through the game and makes the game even more enjoyable. It's a well-polished fun game that is hard to put down. It's a fantastic game.

Overall: 9/10

An ordinary day, in an ordinary American town.. Kids playing baseball and families spending time together. All of a sudden, there’s a disturbance up above. What looks like a meteor, is tearing across the clear blue sky and people begin to panic and run for safety. Suddenly ‘creatures’, unlike anything anyone has ever seen appear in the streets. They kill indiscriminately and some of the locals end up huddled in a shop. This is Day 1.

Fast forward to Day 474 and we are immediately in very familiar territory. Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and her three children are in transit and looking for shelter and fellow survivors. The mother carries a small baby and she and her two teenage children are walking as silently as possible across rough ground trying not to attract the attention of any ‘creatures’ nearby.. they must do whatever they need to to survive.

"quietplace2_1"

And so we are once again reintroduced to the world of ‘A Quiet Place’, where making any sort of sound or noise can literally get you killed. Back in 2018 we first met the Abbott family and were brought into their post-apocolyptical existence. Back then there was also the dad of the family, Lee (John Krasinsky) and he did whatever needed to be done to keep his family safe. Watchers of the first film will know how his role played out.

The beauty of this second installment includes a ‘back in time’ glimpse to a time which we were not privy to the first time around. In the first movie we were literally thrown head first into this new silent world filled with ‘creatures from another world’. It’s also a bit of a rollercoaster, in that you can be happily pootling along and all of a sudden an attack will happen and it all kicks off.

"quietplace2_2"

I’ll be honest with you and say that I’m not really a fan of horror films, which is what this is being billed as, but don’t let fear get the better of you and give this one a watch. The first movie struck a huge chord with movie-goers when it came out and you definitely won’t be disappointed with Part II. It has everything we need in a movie at the moment; that bit of escapism and a movie experience that we can share with our friends and family.

We’ve been away from cinemas for far too long now and ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ is a great way to get reacquainted with the Big Screen and a bucket of popcorn.

‘Beastial New Year’

Hello all, look what finally turned up in the post! My Nihon Box from January this year, it was such a long wait for this one as it was shipped just before Japan Post resumed their normal service. So let’s begin with the usual spiel of what this service offers!

Much like SoKawaii, Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to for what I find a very affordable price each month.

Like SoKawaii, the more months you pay upfront the cheaper the price for individual boxes will be. https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

3 Months is a single payment of €86.97, making each box €28.99, plus shipping costs.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxjan2021_1"

January’s box theme was ‘Beastial New Year’, which also marks the year of the Ox according to the zodiac calendar. The theme ties in with the Netflix show ‘Beastars’, which became a fan favorite when Season One was first released back in 2019. To which we received two items of merchandise from the show, including a Foaming Soap Dispenser - which is pictured above on the left. This pump bottle features the main wolf Legoshi, with the shows logo. Great to have when you buy the refillable bags of liquid soap. We also received a Legoshi plush as well, which is a nice addition to the box. As you don’t see many Beastars merch here in the west.

"nihonboxjan2021_2"

Moving on, we received a Demon Slayer mini figure from the Hikkake collection. Hikkake translates to Hooked, which is exactly what this figure series represents. Each character hooks onto a box underneath, with three characters available including Tanjiro, Nezuko and Zenitsu. This is just series one of these figures, you can buy the rest of them and more from Dekai Anime at the moment through this link: https://tinyurl.com/zjjz2mx6

"nihonboxjan2021_3"

"nihonboxjan2021_4"

Next up is this tiny little glass hanging mascot, featuring a Tanuki and Kitsune. This very well detailed figure pictured above is from the PUTITTO Tanuki to Kitsune collection. With five different figures to collect, they are from a very popular Japanese online manga series that tells the story of these two mischievous creatures from Japanese folklore. Its very cute and is certainly a series I would be interested in getting into. Although the figure is far from practical, it would be cute to have on your glass shelf or on any display glassware you might have.

"nihonboxjan2021_5"

Now in this box there was a note saying that when my box was being prepared to ship my food item - the Monaka chestnut and mochi, went out of date. So they kindly replaced the item with the above two, which on the left I am unsure as to what exactly it was. I was guessing some kind of mochi maybe? While on the right was the brown sugar soybean sticks that I really enjoyed from a previous box. Unfortunately neither of which I can eat, as both items went out of date a month or so before arriving in the post. Which was very disappointing, but I appreciate the thought.

"nihonboxjan2021_6"

Following on from our food items, we received a miso soup bowl featuring an image of Mount Fuji. This item has been entirely made in Japan, with a black background finish on the outside of the bowl, with images of sakura, clouds and the iconic Fuji-san. The only issue I have with it, is that it appears to be made of hard plastic. Which gives it a bit of a cheap feel to it. An interesting fact though is that Mt. Fuji is one of the symbols that represent a New Year in Japan. It is said that if you dream of the Mountain on the first sleep of the year, it will bring you good luck!

"nihonboxjan2021_7"

Another authentic item made exclusively in Japan, is the above Tako - Flying Kite. This is another New Years tradition in Japan, where you fly a kite with a traditional design on it. It can also be used as decoration, but I hope to be able to fly it one day. Perhaps pack it in my luggage and bring it with me on my eventual trip to Tokyo. Its very small, about the size of an A5 page. Little to no weight to it and was available in a number of different designs. The one I received featured a number of Gods in a boat, which is the image of the 7 Lucky Gods on a Treasure ship. Also known as the Takarabune. It’s interesting looking up the image of the kite you receive in your box, so you can discover the history of kites design.

"nihonboxjan2021_8"

The last item we all received in January’s box is a Pikachu Bento box. We now have a matching set, as we received a pair of Pokémon chopsticks and a case in last November’s box. This super adorable bento box, features the iconic yellow mascot's face on the front of the box.

"nihonboxjan2021_9"

Now if you are a regular subscriber, you will also receive a bonus item every few months. This is a very welcome surprise every time it happens and I have had my eye on this collection ever since it came out. The bonus item I received is a canvas tote bag from the Cardcaptor Sakura and Little Twin Stars collaboration that was released in August 2018. This bag features the iconic Cardcaptor Sakura in her new outfit from the Clear Card series and Kero. Both are drawn in the same design as Little Twin Stars siblings, Kiki & Lala. This bag even folds up into the inner pocket, into a very easily transportable size.

"nihonboxjan2021_10"

And that is a recap of January’s box, just five months late is all. Now I am still missing February's box, so expect another recap review in the coming weeks as well as new reviews for all upcoming Nihon and SoKawaii boxes as they arrive. This box had a good array of goods, for both anime and food fans. As we get a plush, a figure, some traditional and iconic items as well. Such a good box and well worth buying if you can.

For more information on how you can order your own box, look to the top of this review and head over to the link below so you can sign up today!

https://www.nihonbox.com/en

‘One Cut of the Dead’ is back once again, with a sequel that takes place just six months after the films ‘live recording’. The Higurashi family return with Mao, their over enthusiastic daughter stepping up to the directors chair when her father takes an unexpected trip in a removal van as he takes a night's rest in some unusual bedding. They gather up the original cast and crew, with the addition of some foreign talent, as they set their sights on filming their new production in Hollywood.

With the starlet Chinatsu returning in the leading role, who travels to America, changes her hair, starts working in a restaurant and goes by the name Holly. All the while escaping her past and the horrors she witnessed in the first film.

Now I have to say, I absolutely loved the format of the first film and was thrilled to see a sequel. Seeing as we already had a fairly good introduction to the cast in the first film, you really do need to watch that before diving into the Hollywood edition. In which its their daughter Mao, who takes the reins when things really go to shit just hours before they go live on the air. Not only does she deal with the stress, chaos and even a massive incident with the leading star all on the fly - she also deals with working through a fairly big issue with her foriegn boyfriend, who also ends up playing one of the leads on ‘her’ film.

"onecutofthedead_he1"

So with the returning cast of various characters, we still have a good entertaining mix of personalities for this sequel. Within the film they also still have the very awkward task of working with starlet Chinatsu, who seems to love making the film's crew work around her ‘demands’. Some of which require quite a change in the script, much to Mao’s anger. Then we have Mao becoming both the saviour and real star of this film, as her father the director disappears. This girl manages to overcome all the obstacles that a live shooting brings, as well as dealing with a heartbreaking situation with her other half. Then we have the two ‘foreign’ talents in the film, who definitely add to the overall enjoyment of the film.

So as an overall look back on the film, I have to say the first twenty minutes was hard to watch. It was so incredibly cheesy and with terrible acting, that it felt as though it was trying to make fun of itself. However those twenty minutes was the entirety of the film they were shooting live, so we saw their ‘finished product’ first before we actually got to the plot. So the film within the film, was pretty bad, but the film as a whole - t’was decent. I wouldn’t be rushing to go back and rewatch it anytime soon. As it hasn’t surpassed the original, but at the same time it was good to just see it again and see how the characters had progressed. As Mao’s character development was practically the whole point of this film, also it was so good seeing how they shot the film ‘live’ and how it all works from behind the scenes again. It certainly was a passion project. Even though this is a ‘zombie’ film, it was ‘John’s character acting that kind of eclipsed it all. I mean, the moment he was stalling in the scene outside with the zombies - he just went pure Scarface.

So this release is actually a combination of the first film and the Hollywood edition, with a bunch of bonus material. If you haven’t bought the first film already, then I would highly suggest this version. You also need to act quick, as it is limited to just 2000 copies. Based on the fact that this includes the original film, my score is going to be higher than what it would be based on just this sequel. You can also check out the full review of the first film, “One Cut of the Dead” in the link here - http://comicbuzz.com/one-cut-of-the-dead-review/

“Full Bloom Sakura”

Hello everyone, I’m back with another SoKawaii box review! Although a little later than usual, seeing as Japan Post is back up and running international postage again - shipping now takes a couple of weeks compared to 5 days tops from DHL during the pandemic. Don’t worry though, I still see myself doing the subscription box reviews for quite some time yet. So let’s get on to April’s box and its “Full Bloom Sakura” theme, which was celebrating Cherry Blossom season. So everything in this box more or less followed the same color palette. This month’s items are mostly from Sanrio, with one Pokémon item included.

For those of you that don’t know - SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 5 to 7 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep each month. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media accounts. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts, particularly their Instagram one – https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

"sokawaiiapril2021_1"

Our first item this month is a rather large one for the size of the box, and it’s this Sakura Cinnamoroll plush from Sanrio. This mochi plush is perfect for those day time naps that we all dream about post lunch. It’s pillow-like design features the iconic white character, with a light pink blush across its cheeks, sakura petals printed on its floppy ears and a sakura flower adorned on its head. It’s very well detailed and is also an exclusive item, as this plush is a limited run 2021 design from Sanrio. Better yet we have four items from this Sakura Sanrio collection in this very box.

"sokawaiiapril2021_2"

The next item is also from the same collection and is a mini memo pad. Following the same character design as the Cinnamoroll plush, each page is ruled and has the same image on the front of the memo pad on the top of each page. This item is available in 8 different Sanrio character designs, of which I received Cinnamoroll.

"sokawaiiapril2021_3"

Our third item from the Sakura collection is this Character pen, pictured on the left in the picture above. Now it is always handy to have an extra pen in the house and on you at all times, especially one as cute as this. This pen has a decent grip and weight to it, so it will be good for all that general paperwork you have to do. This item was available in three designs, all of which had Sanrio characters in the same traditional clothing designs as the memo pad.

Our next item is the Hello Kitty - Flower Body Spray, pictured on the right in the photo above. It’s in a handy travel size bottle, so you can put it in your handbag if you're on the go. It follows the same Sakura theme and has a cute packaging design. I am actually amazed it never leaked or broke during shipping. The scent might be a bit too strong for some, as I find just one spritz goes a long way. Can be used by adults, but would also make a nice gift for younger girls that are a bit too young for perfume yet.

"sokawaiiapril2021_4"

Now a pair of fluffy socks is always a welcome sight in any box, especially if they are character themed. This pair is once again from Sanrio, and is available in three character designs including My Melody, Hello Kitty and Pompompurin, but with four designs available. So it will be a real pick and mix in regards to what designs everyone will get. It’s made from stretchy material, super fluffy and for me, they fit a UK size 4 comfortably. They are more fluffy ankle socks, will stretch to a UK size 5 to 7 but don’t think there will be anymore room after that.

"sokawaiiapril2021_5"

We are now onto our sixth and final Sanrio item from this month’s box - in this gorgeous Sakura Tote bag! This dual handled tote bag comes with two zippers on top with a rather sizable pocket on the inside. Would be ideal perhaps as a handbag, would easily carry a lunch or maybe even for a beach trip. This adorable bag is covered all around by a floral print, with several Sanrio characters printed across it including Keroppi, Little Twin Stars and Pompompurin. This bag was guaranteed in every April box.

"sokawaiiapril2021_6"

We are now onto our final item for this April's box and it comes from Pokémon, with Volume 5 of their Pokemofu mini doll series. This item is very similar to the Sylvanian Families, where we have a small figure that is covered in a light fur, giving it a fuzzy appearance. This series has been running since 2018 and is being made by Bandai, each figure also comes with a small piece of gum - which allows them to be sold in convenience stores near the sweets. There are seven available in Volume 5, including Pikachu, Grookey, Scorbunny, Sobble, Sandshrew, Alolan Sandshrew and Bewear.

"sokawaiiapril2021_7"

There we have it folks, that was Aprils’ SoKawaii box. Very Sanrio heavy in the merch, a number of limited collectables, very on theme with the Cheery Blossom season. Now let’s get on to the all important information, for how YOU can begin your own subscription, as well as a special discount code just for you guys.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. SoKawaii are back to shipping their boxes via Japan Post, so delivery may take a number of weeks. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 Month – $35.00 (€29.00mo roughly)

3 Months – $33.50 (€28.00mo roughly)

6 Months – $32.00 (€26.50mo roughly)

12 Months – $31.50 (€26.00mo roughly)Better yet, here is a $3 discount code that you can use on your first box by clicking this link!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you enjoyed April's box, then just wait for May’s! It’s theme is “Springtime, Happy Time!” Featuring a number of items from San-X, My Neighbour Totoro and Sanrio. This box is already sold out, but act quick if you want June’s box where you can get your very own Totoro plush! Stay tuned to SoKawaiis’ social media, as they announced their themes, sneak peaks and opinion polls on what fans want to see next in their boxes. They are very active on their Instagram and really listen to what their customers are looking for - so go have your say now! Also make sure and use that special discount code I left you all above!

https://www.sokawaii.com/
Developer: Frontier Developments

Platform: PC (Steam)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Massively Multiplayer, Strategy

Publisher: Frontier Developments

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is an FPS and spaceship combat game that is the latest extension of Elite Dangerous. The game is set in a futuristic galaxy where the protagonist flies between galaxies to undertake missions. The galaxy seems infinite. The scale of planets and galaxies to visit is huge. I haven't played Elite Dangerous in a long time but I was looking forward to seeing what it had to offer and I will delve through the multiple game types and the action feast that is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey.

To start, I mainly played the FPS mission-based game, where you travel the galaxies where you attempt to gain influence and power up your character. It has that classic action RPG style gameplay mixed with a huge emphasis on the action elements. I loved the FPS elements, it's very action-focused and you have to choose how you negotiate each mission. The FPS is mixed with interstellar travel. Different planets have different temperatures and gravity which mean each level is unique. There is a mix of stealth elements, shooter, all-out mayhem and lots of little clever gameplay mechanics such as specialist tools. I did find the gameplay a bit repetitive without a story to bind your missions together, the game consists of what would be considered side missions. If you like the mechanics of going from planet to planet and upgrading your player then this may be up your street.

"elited_o1"

The control system does require a keyboard and mouse just with the sheer amount of menus and options available, the controller just won't be suitable. The regular FPS controls make it easy for anyone to get acclimated with the game. There is an array of menus and side menus that can be a bit clunky, to begin with, it did require a couple of hours to get used to them. The FPS elements are pretty standard and the spaceship does require a bit of time to be proficient. Extensive controls and menus are needed to track missions, spaceships, planets and goals.

Maps, space and levels are all rendered well, this will vary on the GPU that you have but even on my mid-tier GPU, it was awesome to look at it. The frame rate at 1080p was consistent for me and I didn't encounter any graphical issues. The game isn't fully an open world. Each area you visit is enclosed and limits where you can roam. The mix of martian, moon and space environments provide a backdrop for the levels. Each level/area has its unique buildings such as factories, outposts, laboratories, refineries etc. It does give a sense of a series of planets that are inhabited, a living world where you drop into different places to complete missions. The whole space theme, ships, environments and outposts are done well. The gameplay reminds me of Mass Effect without the central story to pin it all together, it's the game I think that comes closest to what Elite Dangerous: Odyssey plays like except a first-person view. Just like Mass Effect, the game is mission-based as opposed to wandering amongst the planets.

"elited_o2"

There is also a space combat mode that allows you to pit yourself against other online players. It allows for deathmatch and team deathmatch modes. I found this tons of fun and I thought it was cool but I found matchmaking poor and a lack of full games an issue. Though there could be huge scope for an improvement in terms of matchmaking which detract from the game.

"elited_o3"

Overall, the game is interesting, I love the mix of FPS action-based space action mixed with spaceship combat. I like the use of tools and levelling up your character as you see fit. There is a huge world to explore and tons of missions to boot. The single-player game has elements of massively multiplayer online games too where other commanders are visible in lobbies and stations. The spaceship and deathmatch combat is awesome but I found matchmaking poor and very rarely played with more than 3 people.

"elited_o4"

The game does suffer from a host of bugs and issues which made the first person game extremely frustrating. The point score of 5/10 is pretty much down to bugs and issues. I encountered multiple mission-ending bugs where I had to do a game reset. I found the most frustrating thing is that I was getting into a rhythm and then some sort of bizarre issue stopping your gameplay. These bugs need to be addressed to get the whole experience. With bugs and issues fixed, I could see the game as being very enjoyable but I was left frustrated most of the time. I was hoping the game wouldn't crash or just end abruptly. I found the lack of story in the FPS made the game lacklustre and the missions became quite repetitive quickly and with bugs hugely frustrating.

Overall: 5/10
;

Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is an ordinary guy and every day is the same; he wakes, he works, he sleeps. His family life is strained and his relationship with his wife is almost non-existent. One night he wakes to hear a noise downstairs and goes to investigate. Armed with a golf club he sees two people dressed in black entering his home. Things kick off and his son is nearly very seriously harmed by one of the robbers during a scuffle. The other robber points a gun at the boy and Hutch is poised to strike the shooter but doesn’t and the robbers both escape. His family is disappointed in him and Hutch feels like he’s failed them.. He goes to visit his elderly father (Christopher Lloyd) in a rest home and on returning home, his daughter tells him that her favourite bracelet is missing and she is devastated. This flips a mental switch in Hutch’s mind and he storms out of the house.

Not all is as it seems and things soon take a violent and dark turn...

"nobody1"

This is one of those movies that you should know as little about as possible before you watch it. What you think is a straight forward tale of a man whose life is mundane and empty soon becomes something totally different.

Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, Nebraska) comes across as one of those unassuming guys who you wouldn’t really expect to make a movie like this, but he has and is totally made for the role of this husband/ father whose life is turned upside down after a home invasion. The movie actually starts in an interrogation room and he looks like he has had seven shades beaten out of him. He’s also holding a small kitten..

"nobody2"

I have to say that this is one of my favourite movies so far this year. It has everything you want in a movie and ultimately tells us to never judge a book by its cover. What you assume to be one thing, can be the total opposite. Plus there’s Christopher Lloyd as you might not have seen him before, a pretty spectacular soundtrack and a semi-camp Russian baddie.

A fantastic movie that I would encourage everyone to go and see on the big screen, though it’s possibly not for the squeamish or fans of non-violence.

‘Back To School’

Welcome back folks, to another Nihon Box unboxing!

This time we are taking a look back on what was available in April’s box, as even with Japan Post resuming normal service the mail is still coming in rather slow, with each box taking several weeks to get here. April’s theme focused on going ‘Back To School’, so we have a rather interesting mix of items that are kind of associated with that. So let’s get started.

Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door.

"nihonboxapril2021_1"

Now on to our first two items, both of which are from the GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka franchise. A manga series that first debuted back in the late 90’s and has had a number of adaptations over the years, including both anime and live action dramas. The series follows a young man named Onizuka who decides to become a teacher in order to attract women. He soon discovers he has a conscience and instead devotes himself to becoming the best teacher, thus using whatever means necessary to break through and help each one of his students that others have given up on. It genuinely sounds like a good show, much like Assassination Classroom - just minus the indestructible creature for a teacher. So in this box, we were lucky to receive a nice sized shopping bag and a set of four corkboard coasters. Each with various illustrations from the show. I would imagine that this series doesn’t have much merch nowadays, seeing as the last adaptation was back in 2014.

"nihonboxapril2021_2"

We also got a small stationary item in this month's box, with a Doraemon Sakura themed pen. Doraemon is perhaps one of the most iconic anime characters in Japan, perhaps more so than Pikachu. This blue alien cat has been a part of generations of people's childhoods since the 1970’s. Its initial manga ran for 26 years! The anime series is still ongoing even today. So its quite nice to be able to get an item that represents a show with that much history attached to it. I mean this box is supposed to be focussed on Back to School, yet this pen will be the only piece of stationary included.

"nihonboxapril2021_3"

Moving on, we have both a Japanese snack item and a good luck cat. Our snack for April’s box was the Karintó Matcha Milk Flavor pastry. They are a traditional Japanese snack food. Sweet and deep-fried, it is made primarily of flour, yeast, and brown sugar. With this version having a matcha milk taste to it. I was hoping to try this one for myself, but unfortunately it was out of date by the time it got to me. The joys of a slow postal service -.-’

On the right is a miniature black cat figure, known as a Maneki-neko Sakura. Over in Japan, the sakura (cherry blossom) season is associated with the start of a new school year. Many schools in Japan actually resemble what you would see in anime, in fact it is pretty common to see sakura trees planted at the front entrances of schools. This little figure is also meant to attract good luck and wealth, as this one is seen lifting its right paw.

"nihonboxapril2021_4"

We are now on to a rather large item that came in this Aprils’ box, and that is a figure of Yúji Itadori from the popular anime this year - Jujutsu Kaisen. Now I am certain you have seen plenty of posts and merch going around these past six months or so about this anime. Although I have yet to sit down and watch an episode myself, it seems to have created a rather large fanbase. It’s the latest supernatural series that seems to be pulling in a new audience for Weekly Shónen Jump, and is also available to read now over on the Shonen Jump manga app. With almost 150 chapters available to read now for just €1.99 a month. Coming back now to the figure, its rather large and is quite sturdy. All you have to do is sit the figure on the base and that's it. He comes in what I would call a ‘ready to fight’ pose, which I assume is his usual stance in the show. Its fairly well detailed and built, it was also added into this box just days after it was released in Japan. So its a fairly decent exclusive for a subscription box, its just freshly out in stores!

"nihonboxapril2021_5"

We are now onto our final item, one that is sure to cushion-the-blow for fans of these reviews! What school themed box would be complete, if it didn't include Koro Sensei? Many of you must be aware of the yellow, perverted octopus from Assassination Classroom. A fantastic show and manga, if you have never heard of it before. The plot follows a group of students, who have become outcasts in their own school due to either their behaviour or failing grades. An opportunity is presented to them to change their fortune, if they participate in trying to assassinate their new teacher - a terrifying and indestructible mutant by the name of Koro sensei. If they fail, the entire Earth will be destroyed by the time they graduate high school. It’s well worth checking out, either the manga or even the anime. So the merch we got from the show is infact a small pillow of Koro senseis’ head! Small, soft and round, it acts as a nice head cushion or just a simple throw pillow.

"nihonboxapril2021_6"

So there we have it everyone, that was April’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from classic shows such as GTO and Doraemon, to the newer franchises including Assassination Classroom and Jujutsu Kaisen. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime fans and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Back to School”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about School life in Japan and how it is different from perhaps western countries. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

“Goblin” was created by author Eric Grissom, whose comic works include Deadhorse, Tom & Violence, Animals, and the space adventure comic - Planet Gigantic. Of which you can check out his social media links here through Twitter: @egrissom and over on Instagram: @egrissom. Then we have Will Perkins, the illustrator for “Goblin”, who is also an amateur paleontologist - which is a pretty neat hobby actually. His works have included Gregory Suicide, Beware…, Fubar American History Z, Sealand Forever and Planet Gigantic.

Overall: 5/10
;

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is the wonderfully updated version of the same game that was released for the Sega Megadrive in 1994. It's updated for modern generation consoles while keeping the gameplay and general charm of the game intact. It is a throwback to old school RPG action games from the early 90s.

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is an action-adventure RPG that remains faithful to the original title but has spruced up graphics and brings it into the modern console generation. While the graphics don't match the levels of AAA titles, it does a great job of making them fit for this generation of gamer. At its heart, it is a platformer with RPG elements thrown in, you navigate numerous dungeons, solve puzzles and extract information from multiple characters in each environment. It follows the classic platformer game mechanics of collecting coins, kills enemies, dodges pitfalls, traps and progresses to more complex levels.

"Wonder

The level design of action elements, platformer sections and puzzles are densely packed into each area which consists of a lot of dungeons. The platform and puzzle mechanics are the standouts for me, they have managed to replicate the original but improve them as well. The controls are responsive and you always feel in total control.

Each dungeon and environment has been rendered using a mix of 2D and 3D animation which gives the levels and dungeons a bigger sense of scale. Asha and Pepelogoo, her companion, are vivid with the use of bright colours to bring their personalities to life. The use of vivid colours brings each area and dungeon to life too. Levels have multiple planes and you navigate them to find power-ups or items required to further your quest. The characters are rendered in a wonderful cartoon style that is thematically present throughout the game. The diverse areas and the cartoony graphics give this game a real modern look and feel which sets the stage for compelling gameplay.

"Wonder

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World is a wonderful recreation of the classic action RPG game released back in 1994. The developers have done a fantastic job of upgrading it and improving the controls to make it more responsive. The use of modern generation graphics breathes new life into this excellent platformer. Even if you haven't played the original, there is plenty here for newcomers. If you are familiar or semi-familiar with the original, this version is a wonderful upgrade and a way to relive the nostalgic era of classic platformers. The game is bright, lots of fun and challenging in many ways. It was sheer joy to play a game that wonderfully updated the original game and revisited this old school platform RPG game from the 90s.

Of Bird and Cage pitches itself as a story-driven music game that aptly describes the game. The game follows the protagonist Gitta Barbot and her life of misery, trauma and survival through this horrible world. The game is a first player adventure game with quick-time events all using the metal soundtrack to tell the story and ultimately becomes integrated into all game events.

The game is a first-person adventure game with the majority of the gameplay elements being in the first person; however parts of the storytelling are from a 3rd person view. The game consists of sandboxed areas where you are given cues on what to do, the majority of these game events require you to solve a puzzle, collect items or fight your way out. The pace of the game which is aided by the soundtrack can be fairly quick and you find yourself in a rush to complete the level your time runs out. To break up the gameplay, you will have quick-time events appear throughout the narrative. I found the puzzle elements that were timed to be quick and the controls are clunky too which made them feel even trickier than they should have.

"ofbirdandcage1"

The graphics could be better, it felt like a last generation game, the environments and characters model were all just a bit off.

However, despite this, the soundtrack and story which are intertwined are the real stars of the game.

The metal soundtrack composed by Arnold Nesis consists of artists like Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (ex-Guns N’ Roses), Rob van der Loo (Epica), Ruud Jolie (Within Temptation), Casey Grillo (ex-Kamelot), Rocky Gray (ex-Evanescence), Mike Lepond (Symphony X), Danny Worsnop (Asking Alexandria), Tina Guo and Snowy Shaw (ex-King Diamond, ex-Therion).

"ofbirdandcage2"

The characters are voiced by Kobra Paige (Kobra and the Lotus), Danny Worsnop (Asking Alexandria), and Davidavi 'Vidi' Dolev (Gunned Down Horses). This is where the game's strength is and it's the musical offering. The game does turn into a musical pretty quickly. Levels and the amount of time you have to complete puzzles are dictated by musical interludes. I'm not a huge fan of musicals so I found the musical elements a bit over the top for me. The soundtrack is amazing though. However, the soundtrack doesn't save the game, it doesn't manage to gloss over the clunky gameplay and parts of the story which are odd and wholly unbelievable story elements.

"ofbirdandcage3"

Of Bird and Cage starts with a deep dark story of a young woman and her trauma throughout her life. It was a lot darker than I thought it would be. The metal soundtrack adds a lot of depth to the story and helps to paint the story. The game does take a turn and becomes like a musical fairly quick though. I'm not a huge musical fan. I found the quick-time events and general gameplay a bit clunky. The visuals lacked the refinement and polish that the gameplay also did. Parts of the story are just bizarre but the ideas are good but just not executed as they could have been. The soundtrack is the real superb element of the game that helps drive the game. Ultimately better gameplay elements and visuals would have improved the game.

Illustrated By: Will Perkins

Published by: Dark Horse Books

Website (plus D&D game): https://www.realmofgoblin.com/

Overall: 5/10
;
