There is talk of a serial killer known as the Blissfield Butcher, who attacks and kills people around the time of Homecoming each year. It’s not long before one by one, each of the teens is murdered in a pretty horrific way. The owner of the house is an exotic art collector and has many artefacts in display cases. One such artefact is a mystical dagger, and when the owner of the house returns, he finds his daughter murdered and the dagger missing.. We then meet Millie (Kathryn Newton), a seventeen year old teen who is unconfident and prone to bullying. One day after school, her mum fails to collect her and she is left waiting in the dark.. A tall and shadowy figure appears, wearing a mask and holding a knife. She runs for her life but he is too fast and soon he has her pinned to the ground. It’s midnight, he stabs her.. a shadow covers the moon and there’s a flash of lightning. Someone turns up and scares the Butcher away. Millie is safe but there’s something very different about her..

This new movie from Blumhouse (The Invisible Man, Ma) is a bit of a surprise really. Looking at the poster and the title, you assume that it’s something in the vein of the 80s movie, Freaky Friday where a mother and daughter swap places. You’d be very very wrong! Though the very basic premise is there, I think you’ll find it hard to think of another film where this scenario has happened.

The Butcher (Vince Vaughn) is murderous, ruthless, and hungry for the kill and his transition into Millie’s body is very believable, even down to the way she walks and carries herself whilst stalking her prey. Vince Vaughn is the perfect choice to play this psychopath who suddenly finds himself transported into the body of a teenage girl. He captures Millie’s essence perfectly and is great in both roles. Kathryn Newton is fantastic too and is definitely coming into her own as a leading actress.

Fans of extreme violence and bloody killings will most definitely love this film. Some of the killings are unbelievably graphic (circular saw) and admittedly I covered my eyes for that particular scene. I was a little bit surprised that the body count was as low as it was but I guess the story takes precedence.

As someone who is not really a horror fan (I love Stephen King though) I was actually really surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie. Great story, great acting and some gory violence that will probably make you laugh out loud in places, makes this one to watch on the big screen. A great movie for a first date. ;)

Overall: 8.5/10
Starring: Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren

Director: Justin Lin

Release date: 24th June 2021

It’s 1989 and at the Speedway track, Jack Toretto is driving in the final race of the season. I actually really loved it when I was there and I think I went on it three times in one day.

If you’ve already watched the trailer for F&F9 then you’ve pretty much seen all they key stunts and action sequences in the film. We’re introduced to the new character of Jakob, Dom’s brother played by John Cena, but unfortunately there’s no real explanation of his plans/ goals or why he’s doing what he’s doing. He just seems to frown a lot and look muscle-y in tight fitting black tops. Anyways, some great fight scenes but just like in the old A-Team tv series in the 80s, no-one seems to get hurt or injured. Some great locations used in the film, including a rather lovely looking Edinburgh that gets totally trashed during a chase sequence.

That being said, I think anyone that’s followed the series and loved it will not be disappointed. It’s a great movie to just leave your brain at the door and enjoy for what it is; lots of car chases, punch ups, and crazy stunts.

Keep an eye out for Dame Helen Mirren’s crazy driving skills and make sure you stay til after the credits for an extra bonus little scene..

Overall: 8/10

Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is an ordinary guy and every day is the same; he wakes, he works, he sleeps. His family life is strained and his relationship with his wife is almost non-existent. One night he wakes to hear a noise downstairs and goes to investigate. Armed with a golf club he sees two people dressed in black entering his home. Things kick off and his son is nearly very seriously harmed by one of the robbers during a scuffle. The other robber points a gun at the boy and Hutch is poised to strike the shooter but doesn’t and the robbers both escape. His family is disappointed in him and Hutch feels like he’s failed them.. He goes to visit his elderly father (Christopher Lloyd) in a rest home and on returning home, his daughter tells him that her favourite bracelet is missing and she is devastated. This flips a mental switch in Hutch’s mind and he storms out of the house.

Not all is as it seems and things soon take a violent and dark turn...

This is one of those movies that you should know as little about as possible before you watch it. What you think is a straight forward tale of a man whose life is mundane and empty soon becomes something totally different.

Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, Nebraska) comes across as one of those unassuming guys who you wouldn’t really expect to make a movie like this, but he has and is totally made for the role of this husband/ father whose life is turned upside down after a home invasion. The movie actually starts in an interrogation room and he looks like he has had seven shades beaten out of him. He’s also holding a small kitten..

I have to say that this is one of my favourite movies so far this year. It has everything you want in a movie and ultimately tells us to never judge a book by its cover. What you assume to be one thing, can be the total opposite. Plus there’s Christopher Lloyd as you might not have seen him before, a pretty spectacular soundtrack and a semi-camp Russian baddie.

A fantastic movie that I would encourage everyone to go and see on the big screen, though it’s possibly not for the squeamish or fans of non-violence.

An ordinary day, in an ordinary American town.. Kids playing baseball and families spending time together. All of a sudden, there’s a disturbance up above. What looks like a meteor, is tearing across the clear blue sky and people begin to panic and run for safety. Suddenly ‘creatures’, unlike anything anyone has ever seen appear in the streets. They kill indiscriminately and some of the locals end up huddled in a shop. This is Day 1.

Fast forward to Day 474 and we are immediately in very familiar territory. Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and her three children are in transit and looking for shelter and fellow survivors. The mother carries a small baby and she and her two teenage children are walking as silently as possible across rough ground trying not to attract the attention of any ‘creatures’ nearby.. they must do whatever they need to to survive.

And so we are once again reintroduced to the world of ‘A Quiet Place’, where making any sort of sound or noise can literally get you killed. Back in 2018 we first met the Abbott family and were brought into their post-apocolyptical existence. Back then there was also the dad of the family, Lee (John Krasinsky) and he did whatever needed to be done to keep his family safe. Watchers of the first film will know how his role played out.

The beauty of this second installment includes a ‘back in time’ glimpse to a time which we were not privy to the first time around. In the first movie we were literally thrown head first into this new silent world filled with ‘creatures from another world’. It’s also a bit of a rollercoaster, in that you can be happily pootling along and all of a sudden an attack will happen and it all kicks off.

I’ll be honest with you and say that I’m not really a fan of horror films, which is what this is being billed as, but don’t let fear get the better of you and give this one a watch. The first movie struck a huge chord with movie-goers when it came out and you definitely won’t be disappointed with Part II. It has everything we need in a movie at the moment; that bit of escapism and a movie experience that we can share with our friends and family.

We’ve been away from cinemas for far too long now and ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ is a great way to get reacquainted with the Big Screen and a bucket of popcorn.

On March 11th, 2011 a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred just off the coast of Japan, which triggered powerful tsunami waves that decimated many coastal towns and cities. Among them was the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear power plants. Within an hour of the 6 minute long earthquake, they had lost all electricity to power their necessary cooling systems for the reactors. This film reenacts the events of those faithful hours following the earthquake, as those that worked in the powerplant gave their all to protect Japan and her citizens from an event that would rival the effects of Chernobyl. Starring Ken Watanabe as the Plant Manager Yoshida, directed by Setsuró Wakamatsu (Whiteout) and based off of the jaw-dropping book by Ryusho Kadota (On The Brink: The Inside Story of Fukushima Daiichi) that depicts the harrowing events of that dark day ten years ago.

We are now just days away from the 10th anniversary of the devastating Tóhoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck Japan on the 11th March 2011. These events also led to the nuclear disaster that happened at the Fukushima Daiichi power plants. Where several explosions, nuclear meltdowns and pressure-release venting occurred, which led to the radioactive contamination of the entire town. I remember when the news hit my TV screen that day, I was glued to every update about the country I had longed for so many years to visit. I was checking twitter accounts for manga artists and YouTubers that I had been following for years, to thankfully learn that they were all safe. This event shook the world, as I for one never thought there was going to be another event similar to what happened in Chernobyl in the 80’s. Japan had experienced one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history, which triggered tsunami’s much larger than predicted. The damage done was harrowing to watch, and that was all before the nuclear meltdowns in Fukushima Daiichi occured.

This film depicts the chaos, danger and immense pressure the power plant workers went through in order to prevent a full on nuclear meltdown in all their reactors. If that had occurred, much of Japan would be contaminated, on a scale much larger than what happened in Chernobyl. The actors skillfully depicted the valiant efforts of the engineers, grounds crew and the cooperative workers that were brought in for support. Ken Watanabe played the Plant Manager, who was the one responsible for representing the workers of the powerplant. Having fought with the government officials along the way, trying to make them see sense. This film was an incredible watch from start to finish, although there were several hiccups with playing it on the Altitude player. As the stream kept breaking every half hour, resulting in it playing once again from the start and trying to find where I had left off. All the same, this is definitely a film worth watching. It is also highly rewatchable, as similarly over the last couple of months I have also found myself wanting to go back and rewatch the Chernobyl series that came out in 2019.

Ken Watanabe gave an incredible performance in this film, from start to finish. However he didn’t heavily outshine the rest of the cast. His co-star Kóichi Sató, who played Toshio Izaki the leading engineer in Units 1 & 2, gave an unbelievable performance. As his character took the harsh responsibility of creating suicide squads, which included several volunteers going out in pairs to manually go into the reactors to begin the venting process. This film deserves immense recognition, Golden Globes, Oscars, etc. But ultimately, this film will hopefully have a positive effect on raising awareness for those that were affected by this tragedy. And with the 10th anniversary now on our doorsteps, it has also been announced that the route of the Olympic Torch relay will also include Fukushima, as the 2020/21 Olympics has been named as the ‘Reconstruction Olympics’. Which symbolises a new start for Fukushima, which is still in the process of rebuilding and decontaminating the soil & water around the powerplants.

The Crood family are still trying to find a place to call home. Guy and Eep’s blossoming relationship is stronger than ever and they are now looking for ‘Tomorrow’, a place that Guy’s parents used to talk about finding, back when he was a small boy. One day they are journeying across the land, feeling hungry and tired, when they stumble across a colossal wall blocking their path.. They break through it and discover an amazing land, full of all the food that they could possibly need/ desire. Needless to say, they all go crazy and gorge themselves til they are totally full. Soon they are attacked by masked figures who want to know who they are and what they want.. The masked figures are in fact a family named the Betterman’s, who turn out to be much more evolved and ‘modern’ than the Croods.

There are many many marked differences between them and soon they start to discover what makes them each tick..

This is the second Croods movie, with the first one being released back in 2013. There was also a tv series back in 2015 but it’s definitely about time we were re-introduced to the Crood clan. Sometimes you wonder why they take so long to release a second movie but it turns out that sometimes that works in its favour, ie people will be more than likely to watch/re-watch the first movie because they enjoyed this one so much.

Now that the kids here are off school for the summer, we definitely need some great movies in the cinema that they can watch with their families. Pretty much all of the films in the cinema at the moment are for age 12+ and so this is a very welcome addition. The other great thing about this movie is that there’s something for literally everyone in it. It’s always a bonus when you can have that shared experience on a family visit to the cinema. There’s laughs and slapstick for the younger kids and then you have lots of great ‘in-jokes’ for the grown ups.

I have to say, I really really enjoyed this one and will definitely be taking my niece and nephews to see it when I can. If you’re looking for a fun movie with lots of great characters and a brilliant storyline, then this is definitely a must see. I’ll be very surprised if there’s not a third installment at some point in the future.

Famous around the world for his creation of a Vampire Lord, but where did this inspiration for the tale hail from? Well in the village of Six Mile Hill, a quiet countryside town somewhere in Northern Ireland. They believe the character was inspired by a local legend, known as the Abhartach. An evil creature known for draining people's blood dry, whose grave lies in the middle of a field, marked by a mound of stones.

The truth of the legend is about to be tested, when tragedy strikes the small village. Against the residents wishes, a new bypass is to be built in the same field the gravesite is located. The first task is to destroy the Abhartachs gravesite - but are they willing to deal with the undead that rise against them?

‘The Boys from County Hell’ was such a surprising watch. Although at times it appeared quite cheesy, it was also very relatable in how the characters reacted to each of the horrific situations. Perhaps it’s because I share the same kinship as the characters, as we all live on the same land although we are from either ends of the border. I feel that Irish viewers would get the best kick out of this movie, as I can’t say how well it would be received by other nationalities. Would a British or American viewer get the same joke? Would they share the same humor as the characters? Do they know how culturally normal it is to go across fields home at night from the pub with a bag of cans in hand? Or even how ‘normal’ it was for fathers and sons to have a very bravado relationship. How many young people from nearly every village in Ireland once left their homes to travel abroad for work - from Australia to England, even the USA. This film certainly speaks to a generation and I’m not afraid to say that it is in fact my own.

So we begin with the trio of friends - Eugene, William and Claire. All of which are in their early twenties I would imagine, trying to get by in a small rural village. After a short fight on the way home between the two lads, a gruesome death happens to one of them. As the town mourns the loss of one of their young men, the family and friends are distraught. It isn’t long after that the construction work for the new bypass has to begin in the same field that the Abhartach’s grave is located. Aside from the three amigos, we are introduced to their wider family. From their parents, to the local drunkard, the Undertaker and the all important Barman! Above all we can never forget the very charismatic grizzly of a man - SP McCauley. Truly the best mate and drinking buddy an Irish man would ever need!

So the comedy certainly comes from the characters and their reactions, to the intense violent attacks that continue to put their lives in danger. The horror lies in the details, how blood just pours from peoples eyes, out of houses and onto the streets. Its nightmarish how it all occurs. Not to forget the 'locals' that become 'infected’ turn into feral creatures that just attack our construction crew. If we suddenly discovered that creatures like the undead existed, this film would be deemed so realistic it would be classed as a documentary into the events that took place in Six Mile Hill.

This isn’t the first venduring for The Boys From County Hell, as it was originally a short film of the same name back in 2013. Director Chris Baugh and producer Brendan Mullin successfully crowdfunded a campaign for the 17minute short film that had a very similar story. Since then they have rewrote the script, got backing for a full length film and recast the majority of the roles, wth just Nigel O’Neill from the original short returning for the role of Eugene's father.

This ‘Boys From County Hell’ film had a fantastic cast, including Jack Rowan (Peaky Blinders, Noughts + Crosses), Louisa Harland (Derry Girls), Nigel O’Neill (The Clandestine), and John Lynch (The Banishing, Isolation). The film was also recently played at this year’s Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival.

So not only did this film cover some comedic moments, some savage fight scenes, gore, missing limbs and Daddy issues. It was also good craic to watch. I know it’s cheesy at times, but sometimes that's all you need in a film. ‘Boys From County Hell’ could very well be the Irish version of ‘Shaun of the Dead’ in my books!

Overall: 8/10

Review by Vixen Ninetails

In the sleepy Irish town of ‘Six Mile Hill’, famously claimed by locals to have once been visited by the Irish author Bram Stoker himself, lives Eugene Moffat, a young man who mostly spends his days drinking pints with his friends or out of boredom, pranking tourists who come by to visit the gravesite of the ancient Irish vampire ‘Abharlach’, who is believed to be what inspred Bram Stoker’s Dracula. But due to a personal tragedy, Eugene is forced to work with his no nonsense father, as part of his father’s crew of road workers. All hell begins to break lose, when Eugene and the crew tears down a cairn, that is famously believed to be ‘Abharlach’s’ final resting place, which causes Eugene alongside his father and the rest of his father’s crew to soon realise, that they have now accidently awakened the ancient Irish vampire ‘Abharlach’. This suddenly becomes apparent, when they find one of their crewmates having been infected, so in order to survive the night, they must be forced to fight for their lives and for those living in their small Irish town.

‘’Boys from County Hell’’ (2021) is a horror comedy vampire film, that is set in Ireland, within the small Irish town of ‘’Six Mile Hill’. Easing the tension caused by the intense gore filled start to the film, we are shown the beautifully peaceful landscapes of Ireland. The film soon introduces our main protagonist Eugene Moffat (portrayed by English actor Jack Rowan from Peaky Blinders), a young man who mostly spends his time with his friends in ‘’The Stoker’’, a local pub named after the Irish author Bram Stoker, who was rumoured to have once visited their local town. Eugene alongside his best friend William decides to con a tourist couple, who entered the pub, by offering to give them a tour to see the gravesite of a local myth by the name of ‘Abharlach’, an ancient Irish vampire, who was according to Eugene to be what inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. When tragedy strikes, Eugene is forced to work with his critically distant father, as part of his father’s crew of road workers. The film gives a mixture of horror, comedy and even drama elements, as it deals with serious topics such as coping with loss. The film starts to become action packed with some hilarious witty dialogue throughout, when Eugene and the crew tear down a cairn that is believed to be ‘Abharlach’ final resting place causing evil to break free. As one of their crewmates becomes infected, they with some hesitation at first on whether they are dealing with a vampire or a man high on drugs, soon will come to realise, that they must together fight off the evil and uncover how to end what they believe they accidently caused before it gets too late.

The film first introduces the main protagonist Eugene Moffat (Jack Rowan) as a somewhat of an unlikeable character at first, due to him and his friend William Bogue coning a tourist couple of their money, by offering to give them a tour to see the gravesite of the ancient Irish vampire ‘Abharlach’, which ended with them scaring the tourists for a laugh. Eugene is also shown at first to be quite hypocritical in his opinion, when he talks about his distaste for Bram Stoker’s Dracula without even having read it. The film soon makes you sympathise with Eugene’s character, making him more likable, especially as the movie goes on, we learn more about his life, such as a personal tragedy he had experienced and the distant relationship he has with his father, while also being blamed for things he had no control over and when he is forced to step up and fight, he becomes a leader and therefore someone to root for. The character of Eugene’s father, Francie Moffat (Nigel O’ Neill) comes across as a man who doesn’t share his feelings, which has caused a strain in his relationship with his son, as he finds it difficult to show his softer side, as he can’t even hug his own son, so instead he criticises his son’s every move. The title of this film may also fool you, as the character of Claire McCann (portrayed by Irish actress Louisa Harland from Derry Girls) steals the show with her quick wit, as she is able to think on her feet and is a great ally to the rest of the crew. The comedic relieve is mostly delivered by the character of SP McCauley (Michael Hough), as through witty dialogue and his hilarious responses to what is going on around him, his character will give the audience a lot of chuckles in between the more serious moments.

I truly enjoyed this film, from its strangely intense gore filled opening to its hilarious witty Irish humour, that is delivered by a wonderful cast, whose relationships within the film feel real and aren’t forced, making the film feel more realistic in tone. I loved that the film made the development of the characters have a realistic progression, especially with the relationship between Eugene and his father, as the movie doesn’t have the usual movie trope of having a relationship fully change overnight, so this choice made the film have a sense of realism. The practical makeup affects looked frightening on both those who were infected and the ancient Irish vampire ‘Abharlach’. The film also showed quite well how strong those affected and ‘Abharlach’ himself were, from their quick attacks to hearing a loud thump when ‘Abharlach’ hits the ground, making him seem so strong, that it will be more of a challenge to defeat him. The film beautifully sets up its Irish tone, through showing the idyllic landscape of Ireland and through its wonderful mostly Irish soundtrack that includes songs such as ‘Joyce County Celi Band’, performed by the Irish rock band the Saw Doctors. While not only having Irish songs, the film surprisingly thrown in ‘’Dream Warriors written by Dokken, which is mainly known for being associated with Nightmare on Elm Street 3. The film was ultimately entertaining with a few twists and witty dialogue throughout, that was hilarious to watch, but at times I did feel that the more serious moments were pulled back with some of its witty dialogue, taking over those scenes. I was very impressed with the design of ‘Abharlach’, but with that I wanted to see more of him, which is both a negative aspect, while also being a positive aspect, as the film makes you stay in the moment, that you just don’t want it to end too quickly.

I highly recommend watching ‘Boys from County Hell’ (2021), as I guarantee you will be kept engaged to the screen from start to finish, from its bloody intense gory action with witty comedic dialogue written throughout, that will ease the tension, that the drama aspect provides. This film is differently a unique take on the vampire genre, that will suck you back in, as this film shows that the vampire genre is not dead, as it can be taken surprisingly in new directions.

‘Boys from County Hell’ is ‘’a surprisingly unique gore filled witty twist on the vampire genre’’, that is directed by Chris Baugh, who directed 2017’s Northern Irish Crime Thriller ‘Bad day for the cut’.

Special thanks to Vertigo Releasing, who has announced that ‘Boys from County Hell’ will be getting a theatrical release on the 6th of August 2021 in UK and Irish Cinemas.

Overall: 8/10

The year is 1916 and Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) is an eccentric but talented and driven scientist/ explorer. For many many years, there has been talk of a legend, which speaks of a mysterious flower called ‘The Tears of the Moon’ which only blooms on The Tree of Life. Many people and countless expeditions have tried to find it but none have succeeded. The flower is said to cure any ailment and has so far been elusive to all. Lily is thought of very poorly by her peers and so she decides that she must journey to the Amazon, with the hope of finding the flower and using it to aid medical science. She and her younger brother, MacGregor (Jack Whitehall) journey to Porto Velho in Brazil to begin their search.

They come across a boat captain named Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) who agrees to help them with their quest, but only for the right price...

Their search begins but it is not long before they realise that there are other very dangerous people looking for the flower too.. Who will get there first and at what cost?

The movie is based on a ride at the Disneyland theme park and also on the iconic 1951 movie ‘The African Queen’ which starred Hollywood legends, Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.

This movie has everything you could possibly wish for when looking for an action adventure film, including lots of punch ups, a treasure hunt and an amazing array of baddies. People are already saying that it’s a cross between Indiana Jones and Pirates of the Caribbean, which by anyone’s standards can only be a good thing. With a fantastic cast, including the always amazing Emily Blunt, the chemistry between her and Dwayne Johnson is great and feels totally believable. There’s twists and turns, chases and calamity, and it really feels like you’re on a theme park ride.

This has to be my movie of the year so far and ticks all the right boxes; great story, interesting characters, more action than you can shake a stick at and some amazing twists and surprises. Plus some great appearances by Andy Nyman (Ghost Stories), Paul Giamatti (Billions, Sideways) and Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad/ The Irishman).
